Published: Nov 4, 2015

Description

Whether you are an advanced law student looking to review the basics, or an aspiring law student looking for head start, this course will help you build the foundation you will need to succeed in law school and beyond. This course will introduce you to terminology, concepts, and tools lawyers and legal academics use to make their arguments. It will help you follow these arguments—and make arguments of your own. This course consists of a series of short lectures and assignments. A reading list complements each lesson, providing you with a roadmap to help you explore the subject matter more deeply on your own. Although the lessons may cross-reference each other, they are modular in nature: you should feel free to approach them in whatever order fits your schedule, interests, and needs.

Top Free Resources For Law Students

June 19, 2017 By Amanda Gernentz Hanson 1 Comment

Free Resources for Law Students

The internet is full of places to find information as a law student, but where do you begin? How do you know what is credible and what is not? We are here to help. Here are some free resources for law students (and even pre-law students, and lawyers, in some cases!):

Law School Toolbox

If you’re reading this, you likely already know how incredibly helpful the information is on this site! The goal has always been to help pre-law and law students navigate their way through law school successfully, and I like to think we’ve been successful on that front. Some places to start when looking for information on the site –  Law School 101 is where the editors of the site have collected useful posts for law students; the blog is also updated several times a week with relevant information, so sifting through the archives will lead you to a breadth of information.

Law School Toolbox Podcast

In addition to the website, Law School Toolbox also offers a weekly podcast for pre-law and law students that discusses all of the topics that matter while you’re in law school. There are episodes on etiquette, outlining, mental health, careers, interviewing, and so on – there is truly an episode about most things you’re wondering, and a new one drops each and every week! A podcast like this is a great free resource available to you through your earbuds, and you can take it anywhere.

Bar Exam Toolbox

Are you nearing the end of law school and starting to think about the bar exam? Check out Bar Exam Toolbox, another free online resource that can help you make the most of your preparation and answer many of your questions. There are many useful links on the homepage of this website as well, which is geared toward helping law graduates pass the bar exam. A couple good places to start are the Bar Exam 101  link, which is a collection of posts explaining the different aspects of the bar exam and what you need to know; there’s also the blog, which is updated several times each week with new articles to read relating to the bar exam.

Are you a law graduate who failed the bar exam, left wondering what to do next? Check out the I Failed!  section, which should help calm your nerves and ease your anxiety some, while showing you your next set of options.

Your Law Library

As a law student, you have some of the best resources right at your fingertips, and that begins with your law school’s library. Inside are nearly unlimited resources, plus a trained staff of librarians to help you find what you’re looking for. Do hesitate to ask for help – there’s always more to learn!

Your Professors

In addition to the law library at your school, another amazing resource at your disposal are your law professors. They are the ones teaching you the law, and they likely wouldn’t object to talking about it some more. If they have open office hours, drop by – it will help them learn your name, too. If you have to make an appointment, do that. Having a personal relationship with your professors can only help you in the long run.

American Lawyer

American Lawyer is a collection of articles and editorials that stay up to date with stories in American law. There is a website , where you can read about stories as they are happening, and there is also a monthly magazine , which is more of a roundup of relevant issues in American law. Either are excellent resources for you as a law student.

Your School Law Journals

While you’re in law school, another great place to get information is from the law journals published by your school. Many law journals, whether they are topical or more broad, tackle current issues in law that require a student to dive into a topic. Want to learn more about a certain issue? Try to get in touch with the student who wrote it – if she can’t help, she can definitely point you in the right direction.

Wall Street Journal Law Blog

The Wall Street Journal Law Blog is another reputable place to find information on legal trends and big cases. The blog is updated with new articles several times each day, and the pieces give a glimpse into what’s important in the legal news at any given time. It is definitely worth the read for students looking ahead in their legal careers.

American Bar Association

There is a plethora of information for law students on the American Bar Association’s website . Aside from publishing legal articles daily, they also publish the Student Lawyer magazine. Students can create accounts on the site, participate in the forums, and explore the information on different practice areas. This is an incredibly helpful resource that law students should take advantage of.

Ms. JD is a website dedicated to the advancement of women in the legal fields, and it’s not only for women. The nonprofit honors men who are dedicated to equality in the law each year as well. The website features blogs , information on programs and conferences , and other helpful information. If you like to write, you can also apply to be a Ms. JD Writer-In-Residence ( I did that in 2015 ).

Above the Law

Like some of the other websites on this list, Above the Law collects articles about different aspects of the legal world and puts them together in one place. Many of ATL’s articles are helpful and informative, but some are definitely opinion pieces, so be careful about what you’re reading. All in all, it’s a great resource for law students and anyone interested in legal fields.

There are many other places to go to find information on legal fields and law news, but hopefully, these free resources provided you with a good place to start.

Is Using Law Assignment Help Worth It?

Law degrees have always been among the most sought-after and widely respected courses to study at university. It is a very challenging course among the students since it requires a unique combination of personal interest and intellectual stimulation.

Students who need business law assignment help may take advantage of our infinite academic assistance. Studybay is well-versed in a variety of subjects, legal phrases, directions, and rules.

Why Should I Choose Studybay's Law Assignment Help Services?

Students seeking a profession in Law receive instruction and assistance through Studybay legal assignment help. Since there are no computations or math in a legal course, students are primarily assessed on their knowledge, recall, and analytical ability. In addition, students must go through a broad range of case procedures and appeal-level court decisions to perfect this, necessitating much study and preparation for school. This puts even more pressure and stress on the students, forcing them to strive even more to understand everything they can about the cases they've been dealt with.

So, to ease some of their academic tension and anxiety, students seek legal assignment help. As a result, they can receive suitable direction and assistance with their academic research, allowing them to devote more time to their personal and in-class learning with Studybay.

Our specialists do their best while creating law assignments, paying close attention to every element of your legal homework, such as formatting, to ensure that nothing is overlooked. Need business law assignment help ? Write us!

How Do I Find My Law Expert in Studybay?

Before you begin writing, you must first read the case scenario. If you're writing an essay, you'll need to come up with exciting ideas. Typically, you begin by identifying the goals, a list of concerns, and legislation. Then, you examine the situation, provide answers by referencing legal precedents, and conclude with a conclusion.

To ask for assistance in Studybay, simply sign up and post your project. Then, wait for experts to reach out to you, and feel free to check their expertise, rating, and skills.

Studybays provides unrivaled Law assignment assistance (we also know how to write law review articles and other law papers). Some of our experts are Ph.D. graduates of prestigious colleges and universities, making them a reliable helper for any write-ups. They read through dissertations, journals, and law-related websites. Law school is hard. There are so many forms, case studies, briefings, and legal terms that you need to absorb; wouldn't it be great if you could get a helping hand from the web?

Thankfully, you can. The web is packed with useful websites for law students. Here are some of the best that you should check out today.

1. Law.com Legal Dictionary

law.com legal dictionary

Law.com is a holistic legal website. It covers news, rankings, reports, and strategies for anything connected to the practice of law.

Students, however, are likely to find the most benefit in the free legal dictionary. A physical copy of a law dictionary can easily cost more than $50, so having a comprehensive online dictionary available for free is a massive boon to anyone who's training in the field.

You can search the dictionary by legal term or by definition, making it easy to find what you are looking for.

2. The Lawyer Portal

lawyer portal homepage

The Lawyer Portal is a holistic resource for both current students and people who have recently graduated from their legal studies.

It offers law firm insights, free guides, event listings, career tips, and even information on how you can study law in a foreign country.

The free guides are especially useful for people currently in law school. They include topics such as "Guide to Law Work Experience," "Training Contracts," and "How to Enroll in a Law Conversion Course."

The site is an official partner of The Law Society.

3. The Legal 500

legal 500 homepage

Once you have graduated from your law studies, the next challenge is finding a law firm in which to work.

If legal dramas have taught us anything, it's that law firms are highly competitive. Getting into the right firm can make or break your legal career before it's even begun. To make sure you're only applying to the very best law firms in the land, check out The Legal 500.

It reviews the relative strengths of law firms for more than 150 legal jurisdictions around the world and ranks them accordingly. Criteria include feedback from more than 300,000 clients, submissions from the firms themselves, and interviews with current employees. The site also has its own team of independent researchers to ensure fairness.

Along with LexisNexis, Westlaw is one of the world's two leading legal databases. Most universities and law schools have access to both sites. It just one of many financial benefits students can enjoy .

Operated by Thomson Reuters, Westlaw is available in 60 countries and includes more than 40,000 individual databases covering everything from case law and administrative codes to law reviews and treatises.

Sadly, if you don't get free access through your school, the cost might be prohibitive. A license is $89/month.

5. Chambers Student

chambers law homepage

If you are in the UK and about to start studying law or have just completed your legal studies, make sure you visit Chambers Student.

The site provides information on three core focuses—law firms, careers at The Bar, and how to find the right law school.

You can filter by firm, UK region, or area of law to drill down to the information you need.

6. Harvard Law School Job Search Toolkit

harvard law job search

Graduating law students in the US need to have a look at the Harvard Law School Job Search Toolkit. The site is packed with resources for legal scholars who are just taking their first footsteps into the workplace.

It includes guidance on law-specific resumes and cover letters, a job board database, information on obtaining security clearance prior to commencing work, interview tips, and a whole lot more.

justia homepage

Justia is another vast online database of legal cases and legal information. It offers free case law and opinion summaries, databases of US Federal Law (such as the Supreme Court and circuit and district courts), and databases of US State Law (including codes and constitutions).

If you are a law student, you will benefit from resources around law school information, admission guidance, financial aid, course outlines, and job hunting.

There is even a tool to find a lawyer in a specific field. Options include bankruptcy, business, criminal, employment, estate planning, and personal injury lawyers.

8. The Girl's Guide to Law School

girls guide to law school home

The Girl's Guide to Law School (which is in no way limited to a female-only audience) is a widely read blog aimed at legal students in the US.

It covers the usual litany of topics that impact students, such as which law school you should choose, how to survive law school, how to choose a law study group, where to find summer legal jobs, and a whole lot more. Make sure you also have a look at the list of guides. They include a bunch of useful job hunting tips.

Note: Remember, the web is full of community resources for students in all fields. Check out our list if you'd like more information.

9. Bloomberg Law

Of course, being a law student isn't only about absorbing new knowledge and navigating the difficulties of student life. You also need to stay on top of current affairs in the legal sphere. Without context, all that hard-earned knowledge will mean very little.

One of the best law news sites is Bloomberg Law. The site is US-focused but does include some international commentary, especially from America's geographical neighbors and Europe.

The site also offers several law-themed podcasts (covering cases, taxes, legal news, and more) as well as an extensive video section.

10.  LawCareers.net

lawcareers.net homepage

LawCareers.net is another job-hunting site. It has an extensive search engine that includes more than 1,000 firms, 200 chambers, and 100 course providers. There's also a weekly Q&A that's full of valuable insight and advice, interviews with law firm recruiters, an application deadline calendar, and a frequently updated blog.

If you decide to use the site, make sure you create an account. Within the portal is a customizable area that lets you store information, track applications, save your favorite firms, and more.

Don't Forget About Google Scholar

If you need academic papers for your law studies, it is always worth running a search on Google Scholar .

The site does not specifically cater to the legal crowd, so you will need to do some filtering and apply smart use of keywords. However, if you don't have access to databases like Westlaw, it is a worthy alternative.

How to Practice Law Part-time (Or With Flexible Hours)

A part time law practice may be the solution if you need to work reduced or flexible hours when working from home. Here are a…

Can you work from anywhere as a lawyer?

For the most part, yes—it’s entirely possible to work from anywhere as a lawyer. Many lawyers and law firms around the world are already operating on a fully or partially remote basis. Depending on your practice area, you may still need to go to court or meet clients in person, which does impact your remote work plans.

Is it professional for a lawyer to work from home?

From the growing number of virtual attorneys we’ve seen—yes, it’s professional for a lawyer to work from home. The important thing is to continue to meet client expectations in terms of the kind of experience they expect. For example, if your clients expect a highly polished and professional experience as you’re working out of your home, you can set up your home office to match that expectation.

How can lawyers work from home successfully?

To work from home successfully as a lawyer, you’ll need a strong internet connection and unimpeded access to all important case files and documents. We recommend a cloud-based case management system for a smooth work-from-home experience for lawyers. More holistic factors in your work-from-home success will include an effort to minimize distractions, set clear work hours, take care of your mental health, and recognize that the sounds of children and pets may interrupt calls from time to time—and that’s OK.

What do you need to work from home as a lawyer?

The basic tools needed to work from home as a lawyer include a strong internet connection, a laptop, a printer/scanner, a headset (for good sound quality on video and voice calls), and cloud-based software so that you’re able to access key case details away from the office.

You’ll also need secure communication programs to keep client information confidential. Ideally, you’ll also have a separate space to work in (such as a home office). If a home office isn’t available, having a space to sit down with your laptop will do—just make sure you’ve got a professional background for video meetings.

How long does it take a virtual law firm to get up and running?

This depends on the size of your firm, the type of law you practice, what type of experience your clients expect, and whether you’re transitioning to an existing firm or starting a new one. It’s possible to set up the technology needed for a virtual law firm in a matter of days, but setting up new firm processes, transitioning key case details, and setting expectations with clients will take careful forethought and planning.

We recommend speaking with a technology provider or consultant to help you come to an estimate for your specific situation.

What should be included in a law firm work from home policy?

Your law firm work from home policy will differ depending on your firm’s current culture, but in general, these types of policies should include:

  • When it’s OK to work from home (and when it’s not)
  • How lawyers and staff should notify the team if they’re working from home
  • Clear expectations for remote work (are employees allowed to travel or not? What hours are acceptable? How quickly should the team respond to messages?)
  • A stipulation that employees must use secure, firm-approved apps and services for their work (you should have a device policy if employees use their own devices)

Is it possible to answer your desk phone if you’re working remotely?

Yes, this is possible. You can forward calls from your office to your cell phone temporarily , or use a Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) phone service to pick up calls from your business number. Such services allow you to make phone calls from your computer. There are several options , such as Vonage, Corvum, Nextiva, and Jive.

What’s the best way to let legal clients know that you’re working from home?

The best way to let legal clients know that you’re working from home depends on how your legal clients prefer to communicate with you currently.

If your clients have limited access to technology, a call may be better than an email. If you text your clients, you can also text them to let them know you’re working from home. No matter what, reassure them that they’ll receive the same great level of service whether you’re working from home or not, and set expectations for how and when to contact you. Leave a sign on your office door if you’ve got a brick-and-mortar office that you’ll be closing to work from home.

How can you stay connected to clients during social distancing?

There are many ways to stay connected to clients during social distancing. If you’re used to meeting clients in-person, set up short video meetings, for example. Depending on your relationship with your clients and how often you interact with them, you may also want to consider a text, phone calls, or quick emails to provide updates.

It’s important to make sure that your communications are personal and meaningful: Do provide proactive updates on cases to give clients peace of mind, but don’t send multiple emails to your entire client base about how your firm’s operations work.

How do I collect payments when working from home?

There are a few options for collecting payment when working from home as a lawyer. You can have clients mail checks to you, but this can be time-consuming, and creates a hassle for your clients. If postal services are disrupted, the time it takes to get paid could be extended.

Another option is to offer clients the option to pay online via credit card. Many cloud-based providers offer options that comply with ethics rules, and credit card payments are becoming more common for law firms. For example, Clio Payments allows you to share client bills online with a secure link for easy payment.

Advice For Students Who Want to Become Car Accident Lawyers

lawyer homework online

Being a student always means having to deal with loads of homework. This statement is true for all students, regardless of their academic level or the major they choose to study. However, while the scope of homework is about the same for everyone, the types of assignments can slightly vary depending on the subject that you study.

In this article, we are going to tell you about the four main homework types facing law students, in particular. So, if you are a law student yourself, read on to learn what will be expected of you in a law school.

Practice Homework

The first and the most common of the four main homework types is practice homework. The core goal of such assignments is to help students expand their knowledge and reinforce their newly-acquired skills by means of putting them to practice. This kind of homework is the one that makes the most of the academic program, which is why law students struggle with it the most.

The most common assignment that represents this type of homework is essay writing. Just like the rest of their peers, law students are being assigned dozens of essays and other academic papers every year. A load of such assignments is so huge that students often look for the write my essay online writing services and platforms. But, it is an integral part of the educational process, so there is no way to avoid academic writing.

Some other examples of practice homework that you can face in a law school can include:

  • Memorizing local laws;
  • Reading court records;
  • Examining subject-related literature, etc.

Extension Homework

The second one of the four main homework types is extension homework. In a nutshell, this type of homework is used by professors to encourage their students to pursue knowledge individually and in ways that are more imaginative than simply reading a textbook. Also, extension assignments are used to help students connect what they learn in the classroom with real-life and apply their existing skills to expand their knowledge.

Common types of law assignments that represent this type of homework include:

  • Writing literature reviews;
  • Researching local law news;
  • Compare and contrast events, etc.

Creative Homework

Despite the fact that law students spend most of their time studying complex and serious subjects, there is still a place for the next type of homework – creative homework in their curriculums. As you can guess from its name, this type of homework often takes different creative forms. The key goal is to help students develop problem-solving and critical thinking skills through completing creative projects.

There are plenty of examples of creative homework assignments that you can face in a law school. Basically, pretty much any type of individual project can be considered a creative homework assignment. However, to help you grasp the idea, here are a few examples of the most common law assignments of this type:

  • Research projects;
  • Photo essays;
  • PowerPoint presentations, etc.

Preparatory Homework

Finally, the last of the four types of homework is preparatory homework. The key goal of such homework is to help students gain solid background on a specific unit of study in order to prepare them for future lessons. Simply put, preparatory homework is the type of homework that helps you collect initial knowledge on the subject you are studying. And it can also be called one of the most common types of assignments facing law and other students.

What assignments can be considered as preparatory homework? In fact, there are many. To name a few, here are some of the most common examples of this type of homework:

  • Tests and exams;
  • Completing exercises from the workbook;
  • Reading textbook chapters to prepare for the next lesson, test, discussion, etc.

The Bottom Line

Whether you are just planning to enroll in a law school or are already a law student, knowing about different types of homework that you will have to deal with can empower you for better academic achievements.

After reading this article, you should have a better idea of different homework types that you can face studying in a law school. Hopefully, this will help you prepare for your academic path and ensure success.

Hunter Biden's gun case was spurred by an ATF form. The shop violated federal law.

lawyer homework online

If a Delaware gun store had done its job, Hunter Biden never would have bought the gun that resulted in his felony conviction this month .

By law, handguns can be sold by shops only to state residents, who must provide a government-issued proof of residency, and Biden was not a legal resident of Delaware in 2018. Instead, he offered only a passport , with his name and birthdate.

StarQuest Shooters & Survival Supply not only sold him the .38 revolver anyway, but it later tried to cover its tracks by quietly adding a note to the form years later. The shop’s owner, Ron Palimere, admitted to federal agents that the store annotated the form around 2021 with a handwritten line “D.E. VEHICLE REGISTRATION.”

The issue almost became a point of contention in the trial when Biden’s defense team tried to raise it, but Judge Maryellen Noreika ruled that the shop wasn’t on trial and that the gun sales form would confuse jurors .

But gun control activists say that ruling showed a double standard in favor of convicting Biden while ignoring the violation by the gun shop.

“We don’t give drug dealers a pass to get the possessor,” said David Chipman, a former senior policy adviser at Giffords, whose nomination by President Joe Biden to lead the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives ended when it failed to gain enough Senate support in 2021. “It’s criminal investigation 101. How the government has bent over backward to explain away the more serious felony is shocking.”

National security expert Marcy Wheeler scrutinized the two versions of the 4473 firearm sales forms on her website and came to the same conclusion . Despite the Justice Department prosecutor’s boasts of “no one is above the law,” the gun shop’s mistakes got a free pass.

“The (shop's employees) gave irreconcilable testimony on the stand,” Wheeler wrote on her site, citing transcripts of the case . “If you’re going to prosecute Hunter Biden for lying on a form, how do you avoid prosecuting a gun shop that doctors a form after the fact?”

Among the problems with the annotated form: Biden did not hold Delaware residency in 2018 and did not provide a vehicle registration because he didn’t have one. In fact, he arrived at the shop that day in a Cadillac CTS not registered in his name. The ATF also has rules on how to properly amend a sales form – none of which were followed.

A spokesman for special counsel David Weiss declined to answer any questions about the issue, citing the pending sentencing. The day of the guilty verdict June 17, Weiss was the one who proclaimed : “No one in this country is above the law. Everyone must be accountable for their actions.”

In pretrial motions in May, prosecutor Derek Hines told the judge: “I would just say that whether or not Mr. Biden showed up with a Delaware vehicle registration for the car that he showed up in has no bearing on the falsity of his statement whether or not he was an unlawful user or addict.”

Biden’s defense team also declined to comment on the forms but confirmed Biden was not a resident of Delaware and did not have a vehicle registered in the state in 2018. Delaware’s Department of Motor Vehicles does not release private vehicle registrations under the state’s open records law.

Biden’s lead defense attorney, Abbe Lowell, argued in court that the altered form would have proven bias by the store clerks and claimed prosecutors granted the gun shop owner immunity.

What the public record shows about Hunter’s 4473

The widely circulated gun sales form shows Hunter Biden checked the box attesting to not being addicted to drugs in 2018. That's the same document that notes he provided a passport to StarQuest Shooters & Survival Supply.

The form was signed by Gordon Cleveland, the shop’s clerk who testified he watched Biden fill out the form . In an interview with prosecutors in May and at the trial, Cleveland said that in 2018 he went and asked another shop worker, Jason Turner and shop owner Palimere if he could accept a passport − he couldn’t remember seeing an additional proof of residency.

A second copy of the 4473 was turned over to the ATF in 2021 − the one bearing the “D.E. VEHICLE REGISTRATION” notation – but the jury never saw that form.

Under questioning at the trial, Turner gave answers that danced around the addition to the form years after the sale. He testified, “I would have written it.” Then later, “I wrote it.” Shown the 2018 version without the vehicle registration, he acknowledged: “It’s not there."

Palimere met with prosecutors in May and told them that in 2021 he reviewed the paperwork, realized the error and directed Turner to fix it.

“Palimere decided to write Delaware registration in the box labeled 18.b. Palimere does not know why that was chosen but he knew it had to be an official document and it was all they could think of. Turner was the one who wrote Delaware vehicle registration in the box,” according to the interview.

Palimere did not respond to questions from USA TODAY about the episode.

Do gun shops get prosecuted for faulty paperwork?

The ATF’s in-person inspection protocol is the primary tool for identifying and adjudicating paperwork errors. Inspectors closely scrutinize names and addresses because they say it’s a crucial aspect of the Gun Control Act to prevent prohibited people from purchasing guns and track down purchasers if guns are used in crimes.

After a 2015 inspection, the shop that sold Biden a revolver – owned then by Palimere, too – was issued a warning letter by the ATF for failing to properly account for sales and fill out 4473s. A copy of the report shows five violations − including failing to report multiple handgun sales as required and failing to take accurate birth dates and addresses.

Palimere had to sign a form acknowledging the mistakes and pledging to fix them. "Mr. Palimere stated that mistakes were made due to carelessness, not paying attention to detail while processing the forms," the ATF report states.

Cited gun shops can face a range of administrative actions from the ATF, ranging from the “report of violations,” warning letters, warning conferences and ultimately license revocation.

ATF spokeswoman Kristina Mastropasqua declined to comment on the Biden StarQuest situation, saying only, “Whether a licensee is subject to revocation proceedings, criminal prosecution or other regulatory action depends on the facts and circumstances surrounding the violation and the relevant law.”

In technical terms, Hunter Biden was convicted under 18 USC 922 (g)(3) for being an unlawful user or addicted to any controlled substance when he bought a gun. Another section of that statute applies to gun shops.

In the past decade, federal prosecutors charged gun sellers for violations of 18 USC 922 (b)(5) regarding maintaining accurate records of the purchasers at least 20 times, according to federal court records. The charge can carry a five-year prison term.

Earlier this month, federal prosecutors charged a Kentucky gun shop, Mt. Washington Gun & Pawn, with failing to keep records under 922 (b)(5). The gun sold illegally: a .38 caliber revolver.

Eric Delbert, an Ohio gun shop owner and host of the weekly gun radio program OnTarget, put the Hunter Biden 4473 situation bluntly: “The shop screwed this up” by assuming he was a resident.

“We need to do everything in our power to cross our Ts and dot our Is when you’re a gun store,” Delbert said. “I think if it’s a one-off mistake and not a consistent pattern, the shop should be counseled on how to make it right.”

Delbert says he regularly is presented with driver's licenses that don’t match a current address. ATF rules dictate a second form of ID is necessary in that case and, while Delbert acknowledged that is a hassle, he said it is important for tracing firearms if they’re later used in crimes.

The rule is intended to prevent people from driving to another state to purchase a handgun. In practice, however, gun enthusiasts can simply have out-of-state shops ship handguns to a local licensed dealer, which performs the background check before transferring the firearm.

“We deal with it every day,” he said. “It can be a car registration, the person can be working for the city and provide a pay stub, tax returns, anything from government. People try to give you utility bills, but that’s not government-issued.”

FACT SHEET: President Biden’s Presidential Proclamation and Joint DHS-DOJ Interim Final Rule Cut Encounters at Southwest Border by Over 40 Percent in First Three Weeks

The Presidential Proclamation issued by President Biden to temporarily suspend the entry of certain noncitizens across the Southern border and the complementary joint interim final rule (IFR) issued by DHS and DOJ have now been in effect for three weeks, resulting in a significant reduction in the number of encounters at our Southwest Border. Under the IFR, asylum eligibility is generally limited for those who cross the southern border unlawfully or without authorization during times of high encounters. While it is still early, the Border Patrol’s 7-day encounter average has decreased more than 40 percent to under 2,400 encounters per day.

These executive actions are no substitute for Congressional action. Twice now, Congress has failed to pass the bipartisan border security agreement negotiated in the U.S. Senate, which would have provided the critical personnel and funding needed to further secure our Southern border. The agreement would have added 1,500 U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Agents and Officers, added 1,200 U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) personnel, invested in technology to catch illegal fentanyl, and delivered sweeping reforms to the asylum system. Congress must still act.

Enhanced Enforcement and Consequences

Noncitizens who are subject to the rule’s limitation on asylum eligibility and who do not establish a legal basis to remain in the United States are being promptly removed. Those removed are subject to at least a five-year bar to reentry and potential criminal prosecution.

DHS personnel at CBP, ICE, and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) have quickly operationalized and implemented the Proclamation and IFR over the past three weeks, with notable impacts including:

  • Average daily encounters by Border Patrol at the Southwest Border are below 2,400 per day, the lowest level of encounters since January 17, 2021, but still above the level that would lift the suspension under the Proclamation and IFR.
  • DHS has removed and returned more than 24,000 individuals to more than 20 countries, including by operating more than 100 international repatriation flights.
  • DHS has doubled the percentage of noncitizens removed or returned directly from Border Patrol custody.
  • DHS has doubled the share of encounters processed through Expedited Removal while in USBP or ICE custody. Expedited Removal processing was already at record levels prior to the Declaration.
  • DHS has decreased the number of people released pending their removal proceedings by over 65 percent.
  • We continue to implement recently announced measures to increase the overall capacity of enforcement resources — including repatriation flights and detention capacity. ICE is optimizing air charter contracts to ensure the maximum amount of repatriation flights can be effectuated weekly. Over the past year, ICE averaged 29 repatriation flights per week. Record numbers of flights have been enabled by continued diplomatic efforts to significantly expand the number of countries to which ICE is able to regularly remove individuals.
  • Over the last year, the agency has conducted removal flights to a range of South American and Eastern Hemisphere countries, including Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Egypt, Mauritania, Senegal, Uzbekistan, and India. Efforts to expand the number of removal flights continue with the expectation of additional flights added to the schedule in the coming weeks.
  • ICE ERO is adjusting existing detention facility contracts to expand the number of beds in its detention network.

Public Safety

The Presidential Proclamation and IFR have enhanced DHS’s capacity for enforcement against individuals who pose a public safety or national security threat, such as gang members attempting to enter the country unlawfully or without authorization, because the IFR renders those individuals ineligible for asylum and enables their quick removal. With the 1,500 Border Patrol Agents and CBP Officers that the bipartisan border security agreement would add, DHS would be able to enhance enforcement even further.

  • DHS has returned more Border Patrol agents to the field to undertake front line border security operations, enhancing DHS efforts to interdict individuals who pose a threat to public safety.
  • These efforts continue to expand and maximize DHS enforcement against individuals who pose a threat to our communities , including the announcement on May 9 of a Proposed Rule to apply statutory bars to asylum for individuals who pose a public safety concern earlier in the process, during the credible fear screening.
  • To identify individuals of concern, DHS uses a range of resources and information, including information shared by partners worldwide, to inform screening and vetting and to target such individuals attempting to come to United States. DHS works tirelessly to expand access to additional foreign records systems through new international agreements.
  • Along with law enforcement partners worldwide, DHS is constantly monitoring new and emerging threats, including the threat posed by criminal organizations that could present a concern to public safety. The Department conducts thorough screening and vetting for any individual that we encounter on the southern border who could be affiliated with these organizations.
  • For example, DHS has implemented enhanced screening measures at the border to identify known or suspected gang members, including members of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua. Individuals confirmed to be gang members are required to be referred for criminal prosecution or placed into Expedited Removal and detained.

How it Works

The Presidential Proclamation suspends the entry of noncitizens across the southern U.S. border, which includes the Southwest land and the southern coastal borders, with certain exceptions. The rule, issued consistent with the Proclamation, restricts asylum eligibility for those who cross the southern U.S. border unlawfully or without authorization. That means that noncitizens who have crossed unlawfully or without authorization since June 5, 2024, are considered ineligible for asylum, with certain exceptions.

  • The limitation on asylum eligibility will be discontinued when encounters fall below certain levels but will come back into effect if encounters rise again. For additional details on the Proclamation and IFR, see the DHS fact sheet available at the following link:
  • Fact Sheet: Presidential Proclamation to Suspend and Limit Entry and Joint DHS-DOJ Interim Final Rule to Restrict Asylum During High Encounters at the Southern Border | Homeland Security

Individuals in Mexico may continue to use the CBP One ™ mobile app’s appointment scheduling function. Currently, CBP makes 1,450 appointments available per day at eight land ports of entry via this functionality. Use of the app requires those seeking an appointment to submit vital information in advance, improving DHS’s ability to conduct screening and vetting.

Building on Significant Actions to Enforce our Laws and Expand Access to Lawful Pathways and Processes

  • A majority of all southwest border encounters during the past three fiscal years resulted in a removal, return, or expulsion. DHS removed or returned over 740,000 individuals in the 12 months after the end of the Title 42 public health Order, more than any year since 2010. This has included more removals to countries other than Mexico than in any prior year ever.
  • DHS has significantly expanded its capacity to conduct credible fear interviews. Since May 12, 2023, DHS has conducted more than 152,000 credible fear interviews. The Proclamation and IFR follow a series of steps that the Administration has taken over the past three years as it prepared for the end of the Title 42 public health Order, and after it was lifted last year, including surging personnel, infrastructure, and technology to the border, issuing the Circumvention of Lawful Pathways Rule, and referring record numbers of noncitizens into expedited removal.

For additional information on the actions taken over the past three years, see our fact sheet at the link below:

  • Fact Sheet: DHS Continues to Strengthen Border Security, Reduce Irregular Migration, and Mobilize International Partnerships | Homeland Security

This Administration has also carried out the largest expansion of lawful pathways and orderly processes in decades. The Presidential Proclamation and corresponding rule are already enabling DHS to quickly remove those without a lawful basis to remain, strengthening enforcement and freeing up the asylum system for those with legitimate claims.

  • Through the CHNV processes, nationals of Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela who have a supporter and who clear background checks, may receive advanced travel authorization to travel to the United States lawfully, without going through dangerous and costly irregular migration routes. Through the end of May, more than 462,100 CHNV nationals have arrived lawfully through the process.
  • Through the Safe Mobility initiative, U.S. government and international non-governmental organizations are working with several countries to establish centers where individuals can find information and screening for potential access to processes, including the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program, and information on other pathways and orderly processes to the United States as well as other countries, such as Canada and Spain. More than 10,000 refugees have arrived in the United States through this initiative thus far.

Still, it is important to underscore that these actions cannot achieve the same results as Congressional action. DHS needs additional personnel and funding in order to quickly impose consequences on all noncitizens who cross irregularly and do not have a legal basis to remain in the United States.

Racial justice, free speech groups join fight against potential TikTok ban

Image

A dozen social and racial justice groups said Thursday that the federal effort to require a sale or ban of TikTok would suppress speech from minority communities by disrupting a critical tool many use to establish connections online and advocate for causes.

The legal brief, submitted to a federal court in Washington, comes as TikTok and its Beijing-based parent, ByteDance, are waging a consequential legal battle against the law, which would disrupt the platform’s U.S. operation to address bipartisan concerns about the popular app .

Thursday is the deadline for third-party groups to file documents supporting the social video platform and eight TikTok creators who sued the U.S. government last month. The two cases have since been consolidated.

The legal filing submitted Thursday came from a diverse set of organizations, including the New York-based Asian American Federation, a Washington-based nonprofit called the Hispanic Heritage Foundation, a Virginia-based transgender advocacy organization named the Calos Coalition and the Muslim Public Affairs Council.

In the brief, the groups wrote that TikTok has been instrumental to advocacy around various issues, such as reproductive rights and opposition to anti-LGBTQ+ legislation around the country.

Image

They say the platform has empowered diverse communities in online conversations and placed “marginalized views squarely before new audiences,” enabling them “to break down stereotypes that persist in America and globally.” The brief claims this happens because the platform gives communities increased reach and the ability to bypass “entrenched hierarchies” found on other social media platforms.

TikTok has also received support from other organizations, which have echoed arguments the company has made in its lawsuit against the government.

On Wednesday evening, seven other free speech-oriented advocacy groups submitted a brief to the court, arguing the law would infringe on the First Amendment and make it impossible for users to associate on the app. Some digital rights groups like the Electronic Frontier Foundation have previously expressed support for the company or sided with it in a similar lawsuit against Montana last year.

The libertarian public interest firm Institute For Justice and Reason Foundation also filed a brief Thursday supporting TikTok’s free speech claims. Both groups have received donations from the Susquehanna Foundation, a sister organization to the trading firm co-founded by prominent ByteDance investor and Republican megadonor Jeff Yass.

The federal law, which President Joe Biden signed as part of a larger foreign aid package in April, is the U.S. government’s attempt to deal with long-running national security concerns about TikTok’s presence and reach in the U.S.

Lawmakers from both parties and some administration officials have said TikTok’s current ownership structure poses a threat since ByteDance operates under the laws of the Chinese government. They say Chinese authorities could force ByteDance to hand over U.S. user data or sway public opinion towards Beijing’s interests by tinkering with the algorithm that populates users’ feeds. However, the government hasn’t provided public evidence to support either claim.

The racial and social justice groups argue in their filing that anti-Asian sentiments clouded discussions around the law. Many TikTok creators have also opposed the measure, which marks the first time the U.S. has singled out a social media company for a potential ban. It gives ByteDance nine months to sell TikTok, and a possible three-month extension if a sale is in progress.

However, both companies have argued they would have to shut down TikTok’s U.S. operation by Jan. 19 because continuing to operate in the U.S. wouldn’t be commercially, technologically or legally possible if forced to divest.

Last week, TikTok filed another legal brief giving its account of negotiations it held with the Biden administration since 2021. The company said it presented a draft agreement in August 2022 but claimed the administration “ceased any substantive negotiations” with its attorneys after that.

The Justice Department said in a statement last week that it’s looking forward to defending the recently enacted legislation, which addresses “critical national security concerns in a manner that is consistent with the First Amendment and other constitutional limitations.”

The Cato Institute, a Washington-based libertarian think tank, is also expected to file a legal brief supporting TikTok. Yass currently serves as Cato’s vice chair.

Listen: we know homework isn’t fun, but it is a good way to reinforce the ideas and concepts you’ve learned in class. But what if you’re really struggling with your homework assignments?

If you’ve looked online for a little extra help with your take-home assignments, you’ve probably stumbled across websites claiming to provide the homework help and answers students need to succeed . The Basics About Homework Help Websites–Free and Paid

Homework help websites are designed to help you complete your homework assignments, plain and simple.

What Makes a Homework Help Site Worth Using

Most of the best sites allow users to ask questions and then provide an answer (or multiple possible answers) and explanation in seconds. In some instances, you can even send a photo of a particular assignment or problem instead of typing the whole thing out!

Homework help sites also offer more than just help answering homework questions. Common services provided are Q&A with experts, educational videos, lectures, practice tests and quizzes, learning modules, math solving tools, and proofreading help. Homework help sites can also provide textbook solutions (i.e. answers to problems in tons of different textbooks your school might be using), one-on-one tutoring, and peer-to-peer platforms that allow you to discuss subjects you’re learning about with your fellow students.

And best of all, nearly all of them offer their services 24/7, including tutoring!

What You Should Should Look Out For

When it comes to homework help, there are lots–and we mean lots –of scam sites out there willing to prey on desperate students. Before you sign up for any service, make sure you read reviews to ensure you’re working with a legitimate company.

A word to the wise: the more a company advertises help that veers into the territory of cheating, the more likely it is to be a scam. The best homework help websites are going to help you learn the concepts you’ll need to successfully complete your homework on your own. (We’ll go over the difference between “homework help” and “cheating” a little later!)

body-gold-piggy-bank-money

You don't need a golden piggy bank to use homework help websites. Some provide low or no cost help for students like you!

How Expensive Are the Best Homework Help Websites?

First of all, just because a homework help site costs money doesn’t mean it’s a good service. Likewise, just because a homework help website is free doesn’t mean the help isn’t high quality. To find the best websites, you have to take a close look at the quality and types of information they provide!

When it comes to paid homework help services, the prices vary pretty widely depending on the amount of services you want to subscribe to. Subscriptions can cost anywhere from $2 to $150 dollars per month, with the most expensive services offering several hours of one-on-one tutoring with a subject expert per month.

The 5 Best Homework Help Websites

So, what is the best homework help website you can use? The answer is that it depends on what you need help with.

The best homework help websites are the ones that are reliable and help you learn the material. They don’t just provide answers to homework questions–they actually help you learn the material.

That’s why we’ve broken down our favorite websites into categories based on who they’re best for . For instance, the best website for people struggling with math might not work for someone who needs a little extra help with science, and vice versa.

Keep reading to find the best homework help website for you!

Best Free Homework Help Site: Khan Academy

  • Price: Free!
  • Best for: Practicing tough material

Not only is Khan Academy free, but it’s full of information and can be personalized to suit your needs. When you set up your account , you choose which courses you need to study, and Khan Academy sets up a personal dashboard of instructional videos, practice exercises, and quizzes –with both correct and incorrect answer explanations–so you can learn at your own pace.

As an added bonus, it covers more course topics than many other homework help sites, including several AP classes.

Runner Up: Brainly.com offers a free service that allows you to type in questions and get answers and explanations from experts. The downside is that you’re limited to two answers per question and have to watch ads.

Best Paid Homework Help Site: Chegg

  • Price: $14.95 to $19.95 per month
  • Best for: 24/7 homework assistance

This service has three main parts . The first is Chegg Study, which includes textbook solutions, Q&A with subject experts, flashcards, video explanations, a math solver, and writing help. The resources are thorough, and reviewers state that Chegg answers homework questions quickly and accurately no matter when you submit them.

Chegg also offers textbook rentals for students who need access to textbooks outside of their classroom. Finally, Chegg offers Internship and Career Advice for students who are preparing to graduate and may need a little extra help with the transition out of high school.

Another great feature Chegg provides is a selection of free articles geared towards helping with general life skills, like coping with stress and saving money. Chegg’s learning modules are comprehensive, and they feature solutions to the problems in tons of different textbooks in a wide variety of subjects.

Runner Up: Bartleby offers basically the same services as Chegg for $14.99 per month. The reason it didn’t rank as the best is based on customer reviews that say user questions aren’t answered quite as quickly on this site as on Chegg. Otherwise, this is also a solid choice!

body-photomath-logo-2

Best Site for Math Homework Help: Photomath

  • Price: Free (or $59.99 per year for premium services)
  • Best for: Explaining solutions to math problems

This site allows you to t ake a picture of a math problem, and instantly pulls up a step-by-step solution, as well as a detailed explanation of the concept. Photomath also includes animated videos that break down mathematical concepts to help you better understand and remember them.

The basic service is free, but for an additional fee you can get extra study tools and learn additional strategies for solving common math problems.

Runner Up: KhanAcademy offers in-depth tutorials that cover complex math topics for free, but you won’t get the same tailored help (and answers!) that Photomath offers.

Best Site for English Homework Help: Princeton Review Academic Tutoring

  • Price: $40 to $153 per month, depending on how many hours of tutoring you want
  • Best for: Comprehensive and personalized reading and writing help

While sites like Grammarly and Sparknotes help you by either proofreading what you write via an algorithm or providing book summaries, Princeton Review’s tutors provide in-depth help with vocabulary, literature, essay writing and development, proofreading, and reading comprehension. And unlike other services, you’ll have the chance to work with a real person to get help.

The best part is that you can get on-demand English (and ESL) tutoring from experts 24/7. That means you can get help whenever you need it, even if you’re pulling an all-nighter!

This is by far the most expensive homework site on this list, so you’ll need to really think about what you need out of a homework help website before you commit. One added benefit is that the subscription covers over 80 other subjects, including AP classes, which can make it a good value if you need lots of help!

body-studtypool-logo

Best Site for STEM Homework Help: Studypool

  • Best for: Science homework help
  • Price: Varies; you’ll pay for each question you submit

When it comes to science homework help, there aren’t a ton of great resources out there. The best of the bunch is Studypool, and while it has great reviews, there are some downsides as well.

Let’s start with the good stuff. Studypool offers an interesting twist on the homework help formula. After you create a free account, you can submit your homework help questions, and tutors will submit bids to answer your questions. You’ll be able to select the tutor–and price point–that works for you, then you’ll pay to have your homework question answered. You can also pay a small fee to access notes, lectures, and other documents that top tutors have uploaded.

The downside to Studypool is that the pricing is not transparent . There’s no way to plan for how much your homework help will cost, especially if you have lots of questions! Additionally, it’s not clear how tutors are selected, so you’ll need to be cautious when you choose who you’d like to answer your homework questions.

What Are the Pros and Cons of Using Homework Help Sites?

Homework help websites can be a great resource if you’re struggling in a subject, or even if you just want to make sure that you’re really learning and understanding topics and ideas that you’re interested in. But, there are some possible drawbacks if you don’t use these sites responsibly.

We’ll go over the good–and the not-so-good–aspects of getting online homework help below.

3 Pros of Using Homework Help Websites

First, let’s take a look at the benefits.

#1: Better Grades Beyond Homework

This is a big one! Getting outside help with your studies can improve your understanding of concepts that you’re learning, which translates into better grades when you take tests or write essays.

Remember: homework is designed to help reinforce the concepts you learned in class. If you just get easy answers without learning the material behind the problems, you may not have the tools you need to be successful on your class exams…or even standardized tests you’ll need to take for college.

#2: Convenience

One of the main reasons that online homework help is appealing is because it’s flexible and convenient. You don’t have to go to a specific tutoring center while they’re open or stay after school to speak with your teacher. Instead, you can access helpful resources wherever you can access the internet, whenever you need them.

This is especially true if you tend to study at off hours because of your extracurriculars, work schedule, or family obligations. Sites that offer 24/7 tutoring can give you the extra help you need if you can’t access the free resources that are available at your school.

#3: Variety

Not everyone learns the same way. Maybe you’re more of a visual learner, but your teacher mostly does lectures. Or maybe you learn best by listening and taking notes, but you’re expected to learn something just from reading the textbook .

One of the best things about online homework help is that it comes in a variety of forms. The best homework help sites offer resources for all types of learners, including videos, practice activities, and even one-on-one discussions with real-life experts.

This variety can also be a good thing if you just don’t really resonate with the way a concept is being explained (looking at you, math textbooks!).

body_stophand

Not so fast. There are cons to homework help websites, too. Get to know them below!

3 Cons of Using Homework Help Websites

Now, let’s take a look at the drawbacks of online homework help.

#1: Unreliable Info

This can be a real problem. In addition to all the really good homework help sites, there are a whole lot of disreputable or unreliable sites out there. The fact of the matter is that some homework help sites don’t necessarily hire people who are experts in the subjects they’re talking about. In those cases, you may not be getting the accurate, up-to-date, and thorough information you need.

Additionally, even the great sites may not be able to answer all of your homework questions. This is especially true if the site uses an algorithm or chatbot to help students…or if you’re enrolled in an advanced or college-level course. In these cases, working with your teacher or school-provided tutors are probably your best option.

#2: No Clarification

This depends on the service you use, of course. But the majority of them provide free or low-cost help through pre-recorded videos. Watching videos or reading info online can definitely help you with your homework… but you can’t ask questions or get immediate feedback if you need it .

#3: Potential For Scamming

Like we mentioned earlier, there are a lot of homework help websites out there, and lots of them are scams. The review comments we read covered everything from outdated or wrong information, to misleading claims about the help provided, to not allowing people to cancel their service after signing up.

No matter which site you choose to use, make sure you research and read reviews before you sign up–especially if it’s a paid service!

body-cheat-cheating-cc0

When Does “Help” Become “Cheating”?

Admittedly, whether using homework help websites constitutes cheating is a bit of a grey area. For instance, is it “help” when a friend reads your essay for history class and corrects your grammar, or is it “cheating”? The truth is, not everyone agrees on when “help” crosses the line into “cheating .” When in doubt, it can be a good idea to check with your teacher to see what they think about a particular type of help you want to get.

That said, a general rule of thumb to keep in mind is to make sure that the assignment you turn in for credit is authentically yours . It needs to demonstrate your own thoughts and your own current abilities. Remember: the point of every homework assignment is to 1) help you learn something, and 2) show what you’ve learned.

So if a service answers questions or writes essays for you, there’s a good chance using it constitutes cheating.

Here’s an example that might help clarify the difference for you. Brainstorming essay ideas with others or looking online for inspiration is “help” as long as you write the essay yourself. Having someone read it and give you feedback about what you need to change is also help, provided you’re the one that makes the changes later.

But copying all or part of an essay you find online or having someone write (or rewrite) the whole thing for you would be “cheating.” The same is true for other subjects. Ultimately, if you’re not generating your own work or your own answers, it’s probably cheating.

5 Tips for Finding the Best Homework Help Websites for You

Now that you know some of our favorite homework help websites, free and paid, you can start doing some additional research on your own to decide which services might work best for you! Here are some top tips for choosing a homework help website.

Tip 1: Decide How You Learn Best

Before you decide which site or sites you’re going to use for homework help, y ou should figure out what kind of learning style works for you the most. Are you a visual learner? Then choose a site that uses lots of videos to help explain concepts. If you know you learn best by actually doing tasks, choose a site that provides lots of practice exercises.

Tip 2: Determine Which Subjects You Need Help With

Just because a homework help site is good overall doesn’t mean that it’s equally good for every subject. If you only need help in math, choose a site that specializes in that area. But if history is where you’re struggling, a site that specializes in math won’t be much help. So make sure to choose a site that you know provides high-quality help in the areas you need it most.

Tip 3: Decide How Much One-On-One Help You Need

This is really about cost-effectiveness. If you learn well on your own by reading and watching videos, a free site like Khan Academy is a good choice. But if you need actual tutoring, or to be able to ask questions and get personalized answers from experts, a paid site that provides that kind of service may be a better option.

Tip 4: Set a Budget

If you decide you want to go with a paid homework help website, set a budget first . The prices for sites vary wildly, and the cost to use them can add up quick.

Tip 5: Read the Reviews

Finally, it’s always a good idea to read actual reviews written by the people using these homework sites. You’ll learn the good, the bad, and the ugly of what the users’ experiences have been. This is especially true if you intend to subscribe to a paid service. You’ll want to make sure that users think it’s worth the price overall!

Tractor Supply Co., facing a firestorm of social media criticism from customers and an 8% drop in its stock price, announced late Thursday that it has suspended its diversity, equity and inclusion programs.

The extraordinary about-face comes just weeks after prominent conservative commentators skewered the 2,400-store retailer for everything from climate change goals to support for LGBTQ causes.

How this new bill could make Delaware's legal holidays more inclusive of cultural events

A bill that was recently introduced in the Delaware Legislature and aims to include a Muslim holiday as a state-recognized legal holiday has gotten a recent update.

Here’s what to know about the bill’s recent changes.

What is House Bill 360?

House Bill 360 , introduced on March 27 and primarily sponsored by State Rep. Madinah Wilson-Anton of the 26th district, aims to add Eid ul-Fitr to the list of state holidays. The legal holiday would be observed for one day during the first full day of Eid ul-Fitr.

The  legal holidays  currently recognized by the State of Delaware are:

  • New Year’s Day
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day
  • Good Friday
  • Memorial Day
  • Juneteenth
  • Independence Day, also known as the Fourth of July
  • Labor Day
  • Election Day
  • Return Day, observed after noon for state employees living and/or working in Sussex County
  • Veterans Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • The day after Thanksgiving
  • Christmas Day

Previous coverage: A bill aims to add a new legal holiday to the state of Delaware. Here's what to know

Although the State of Delaware grants state employees two floating holidays per calendar year, recognizing Eid ul-Fitr as a legal holiday allows those who observe the holiday to save their floating holidays for other personal matters.

According to a fiscal note from the Office of the Controller General that examines state employee payroll system data, adding one state holiday to Delaware’s calendar would cost $712,532.

One step closer to alcohol delivery: Delaware could become 33rd state to allow home delivery of in-state alcoholic beverages

How has HB 360 changed?

HB 360 originally included both Eid ul-Fitr and Eid al-Adha as potential new state holidays, but Wilson-Anton filed an amendment on May 22 to change the bill to include Eid ul-Fitr only.

On June 20, House Substitute 1 for HB 360 was filed by Wilson-Anton in the House of Representatives, making the bill inclusive of other cultural holidays. Under House Substitute 1, one floating holiday would be removed from the two granted to state employees and one legal holiday would be added.

The added legal holiday would rotate on a three-year basis between Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, which occurs on different days between October and November each year; Eid ul-Fitr, which occurs on different days annually and is celebrated in accordance with the 10th month of the Islamic calendar when the new moon is seen; and Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement for Jews, observed annually on the 10th day of the seventh month of the Hebrew Calendar, which varies each year and usually occurs in September or October.

This makes it so that only one of the above cultural holidays would be considered a legal state holiday in any given year as opposed to all three being recognized in one calendar year. If the bill is passed, it would take effect on Jan. 1, 2026.

Further voting on the substituted bill has yet to take place.
