1. Add strings of fairy lights

A string of fairy lights is essential for any student looking to create a snug bedroom worthy of Pinterest. These can be draped around a room and are also perfect for holding up photographs from home with pegs.

2. Customise your bookshelf

Anything can be transformed to hold your belongings if you get creative. Even a small stepladder can become a cute storage feature with a bit of love and attention. If your bookshelf has a plain back panel, you can personalise it by adding photos into the empty spaces behind your books. That way, you’ll have all of your friends there (in spirit, at least) to support you through your next essay deadline.

3. Don’t forget your drawer space

Simple measures can transform your storage space to make it look organised and attractive. Take these dividers, for example, which can quickly jazz up an underwear or sock drawer in seconds.

4. Poke holes in lamp shades

Everything can be personalised – even plain lampshades! If you poke holes in them, you can project any pattern you want around your room. A word of warning – only do this to lamps you own, or you could face losing your deposit.

5. Create your own deadline board

It’s no secret students have a lot to remember, what with all the essay deadlines, exam dates and lunches with friends. You could cover every inch of your room with post-it notes, but a much better (and tidier) solution is creating your own deadline board. You can easily buy one or even make one yourself.

6. Make your own removable wallpaper

This one sounds scary, but hear us out. It turns out you can make temporary wallpaper using nothing more than sheets of fabric and liquid starch. All you have to do is choose your favourite material (the wackier the colour, the better) and then use a sponge roller to stick it up using the starch – you can find the full instructions here . When you’re ready to move out, you can just peel it right off.

7. Failing that, add a tapestry 

Add a splash of colour to walls like in the image above. This dreamy, blue tapestry has been attached to the wall using double sided tape – an easy decorating solution if you are not allowed to make holes in the walls.

8. Hang accessories on a cork board

There’s no reason why storage options can’t be attractive too. Take this jewellery board for example, which is a simple way of keeping track of necklaces and making use of space in a room. These can be attached on the inside of wardrobe doors if you wish to keep a minimalistic look for your bedroom.

9. Make your own headboard

If your bed is looking a little dull, you can design your own headboard to add a touch of personality. All you need to do is head to the nearest hardware shop to pick up a decent-sized plank of wood to decorate with lights, fabric or anything you fancy.

10. Spice things up with cushions

Slogan cushions or those with a colourful or quirky design can bring a bed area to life. You can find tons of great options online.

11. Paint your own rug

12. Use Washi Tape for… everything!

Washi Tape is a magical Japanese masking tape that is completely removable and reusable (so don’t worry about your deposit!) Use it for making photo frames, crafting (more) removable wallpaper, or some jazzy wall art.

13. Personalise your hangers

If you have an open wardrobe with a visible hanging rail, things can look messy really easily if you use a load of mismatched hangers. Instead, try buying a set of cheap hangers and then customising them so they match your room. You can add sequins, cover them with fabric or spray paint them gold for a luxurious touch.

14. Add some greenery

There’s not much to this trick, we’ll admit, but adding a few plants here and there is an easy way to bring life to a room. They also come with a surprising array of health benefits, like making the air cleaner and helping you study better ( seriously! ). Aloe vera, jade plants and rubber trees are all really easy to care for, so if you’re not an experienced plant grower, those might be some good ones to start with.

15. Organise messy wires

You’ve got your phone, your tablet and your laptop… all of these things need to be regularly charged. With so many wires it’s easy for your favourite electronics to pile up and begin to look unsightly. But we’ve got a fix for this, too: make your own charging station ! You’ll be surprised how quickly things look tidier without all the wires.

16. Make your desk a creative hub

You will probably be spending at least some of your year working away at your desk, so why not make it a place you actually want to sit at. Spruce up the area with colourful lanterns, photos or plants. If you wish to attach items to the wall, try UHU’s white tack, which is great as it doesn’t leave stains.

17. Use your furniture to break up the space

If you’re living in a studio apartment , it can be hard to know what to do with the open space. But there’s an easy fix! You can use your furniture to create different ‘zones’. Put a bookcase along the side of your bed and you can create a bedroom area. Set up your desk along the side of the living room to separate it from where you sleep. There are lots of ways to do it, and it can be quite fun thinking of them.

18. Switch your handles

If you’re bored of the fittings that came with your room, there’s a really easy way to change things up a bit. Unscrew the old handles on furniture like your chest of drawers, and screw in different ones that you’ve chosen yourself. There are loads of options out there, and you can easily put the old ones back at the end of your tenancy so you won’t get in trouble!

Whether you don’t have the budget to hire an interior designer or simply enjoy the idea of doing it yourself, designing a room from scratch can be intimidating for the uninitiated. Keep in mind that interior design is more art than science, and there are no hard and fast rules about how to decorate a room. But if you’re looking for a roadmap, this start-to-finish guide will help you visualize all the steps required to design your space like a pro .

1. Set the Mood

Instead of asking yourself what you want your space to look like, ask yourself how you want it to feel, and let that guide you toward colors, textures, furniture choices, and décor . A light and airy zen oasis might suggest minimal furniture and natural materials. An energizing, casual family space may include bold colors and patterns. Focusing on mood rather than a particular style or trend will help you to create an eclectic space that works for you.

2. Get Inspired

Check out your favorite social media channels, interior design magazines, books, and websites for inspiration. Think about the places you like to escape to, and analyze why. If you’re into mood boards , go ahead and make one. If you live alone, this is a chance to get to know yourself a little better. If you live with other people, it's an opportunity to collaborate on a shared space that honors everyone in the home.

3. Get Real 

Rather than striving for some aspirational vision of how you think your life should look, design your space for the way that you live now. If you have rambunctious kids or pets, choose upholstery fabrics and surfaces that can take a beating and still look great. If you live alone and rarely entertain, there is no need to hog floor space with a dining table for six. If you work from home, move that makeshift office in the corner of the living room into the spare room that only gets used during the holidays. And before you buy anything, come up with a realistic budget that will help you prioritize spending along the way.

4. Declutter

If you’re redecorating, start by eliminating anything you don’t use, need, or adore . If you’re designing an empty room from scratch, think before you bring anything in. There is room in any space for personal items and the things that matter, but successful interior design starts by embracing the essential and building from there.

5. Map It Out

There are plenty of free online room design tools and home design software options if you want to create a floorplan, but space planning doesn’t have to be overly technical. Sketch out layout ideas on paper, or mark out furniture placement with painter's tape to get a sense of scale and flow. Before you buy a single piece of furniture, measure your space. Measure twice. Otherwise you might find that the sofa you ordered is too large to make it through your front door, or too small for your living room. 

6. Decide on a Color Palette

Whether you want to keep it neutral or have your mind set on an eye-catching color palette , deciding early on will help you create a cohesive look. Neutral rooms can be brightened with accessories that can be changed out easily. If you’ve decided you want your room to be an ode to green or pink or blue, pick three complementary shades to keep it interesting. 7. Start With the Finishes

If you are aiming for a makeover rather than a remodel, think about how you can build on the room's existing flooring, wall color, and fixtures to beautify and personalize the space without renovating. If you’re starting with an empty room, refinish floors, paint walls, add tile, wallpaper, or wall panels , or install cabinetry before you bring in furniture and accessories.

8. Choose Anchor Pieces

When designing a living room, focus on your anchor piece, which is usually a sofa, before fussing over throw pillows. Making your biggest, most expensive purchases first will help ensure that you don’t skimp on quality for high-use items, help you maintain a realistic sense of your budget, as well as visualize how much room you have for additional furniture once the core pieces are installed.

9. Select Secondary Furniture

Once you have picked out the perfect sofa, start looking at coffee tables to determine what sizes and styles are a good fit, or whether an oversized pouf would work better. If you chose a rustic wooden farm table in the dining room, add contrast with contemporary metal chairs. Complement a modern upholstered headboard with vintage lighting or bedside tables.

10. Choose Rugs, Curtains, and Textiles

Now that you have all the essentials in place, take a step back, and ask yourself what’s missing. Select and hang art, photographs, or decorative mirrors. Layer in additional decorative pillows and throws. Style shelves and tables with design books, candles, decorative objects, plants , or precious souvenirs. This is your chance to add texture through personal touches that will bring the room to life and make it feel like home.

My living room is undoubtedly the favorite room in my house. It is the room where I relax when I am tired. I entertain my friends and any other guests in my living room. My living room is designed in such a way that windows are facing the hills. These hills offer extraordinarily beautiful scenery, and one can just look at them the whole day without noticing how time flies by. At the foot’ of the mountains is incredibly beautiful vegetation comprising mainly of cedar trees and blue lilies. My friends love coming to my home just to have a view of the beautiful snow-capped hills.

I have painted a light green color on the walls of my living room and a cream color on the ceiling. The green tint offers a therapeutic and comfortable feeling since it matches well with the environment around my home. The domain itself is remarkably green and provides a great sense to one’s body and soul. Cool colors are useful when it comes to painting or decorating one’s house. Dull colors create a feeling of discomfort and may even stress the guests. In fact, my home is painted with only cool colors.

Since my living room is not very big, I had to plan wisely before furnishing it. I also wanted it to look warm and to accommodate my guests who visit me once in a while. I tried to arrange it in such a way that it would fit the necessary furniture without looking congested. The cost of furnishing it was another issue that I carefully considered. I wanted to buy things that were fashionable and comfortable yet not very expensive. After careful thought and consideration, I decided to purchase sofas, two chairs, a rug, a table, a bookshelf, 42-inch television, curtains, and a table.

The sofas look comfortable as I decided to buy a set that has enormous cushions. The collection of sofas is cream in color and, it blends very well with my cream flowery curtains. The location can accommodate at least five people at a time. When I am entertaining more than five people in my house, the chairs come in handy.

The shelves in my living room hold a number of books and magazines. The brackets look like a small library and, one can get books on different topics. I also have novels from mainly bestselling authors, which my friends borrow from time to time. They also exchange my stories with theirs. My magazines are mostly lifestyle magazines that have information about different international celebrities. I also make sure to buy a newspaper daily to keep up with current affairs.

My LCD television is silver in color. This is where my friends and I catch up on recent blockbuster movies. We also watch football games, especially from our favorite soccer teams. The stand that holds the television is designed with a mahogany tree and has small shelves where I place my Nintendo Switch console and game cases for it.

I always entertain my guests with some soft cool, music whenever they pay me a visit. My Bluetooth speaker is not that big, but it plays soothing music. This makes my living room to be particularly lively and welcoming. My floor rug, which covers most of the room, ensures that my guests are warm since the bare floors can a bit cold. My table is made from camphor and looks fantastic in the middle of the room.

How to Decorate Your Room with Paper

Decorating your room can be a lot of fun. While you can always buy premade decorations, you can make ones that are just as nice, but much cheaper at home. From creating wall décor to decoupaging your dresser, there are all sorts of interesting ways that you can use paper. Cardstock and scrapbooking paper will work for most projects, but don't forget other types too, such as tissue paper, cupcake liners, and wrapping paper.

Creating Wall Décor

• Choose 2 to 4 different patterns or colors for the paper.
• For a more realistic quilt, skip the tape and sew down the seams on your sewing machine with a straight stitch.
• Use saw-tooth hangers or ribbon to hang the slat.

• Your paper can be solid-colored or patterned. You can even use magazine pages!
• Simple shapes, such as hearts and stars work well, but you can use more complex ones too. Try snowflakes, reindeer, or bats!
• Match the color of the paper to the shape. For example, make stars yellow or blue, and hearts red or pink.
• You can put up just a few decals or create a wall mural with them.

• The long edges of the tubes should be touching. How much space you leave in the middle is up to you.
• Make a smaller sunburst, then glue it on top of a larger sunburst for a layered design.
• For a dramatic effect, create several small sunbursts and hang them on a single wall.

• Rather than folding the butterflies down the center of the body, fold the wings to either side of the body. This will give you more paper to stick to the wall.
• Make lots of butterflies in different colors and sizes, then stick them to your wall in a cluster.
• For a whimsical vibe, use glitter paint to decorate the butterflies or attaching trailing ribbons to them.

• Keep the shape simple, such as a heart, star, or letter.
• You can use more than 1 color of tissue paper. Try 3 shades of the same color for an ombre design.
• Work in rows from 1 side of the shape to the other. Make sure that the tissue paper tufts are touching.

Making Garlands

• Make sure that you are gluing the folded edges of the butterflies together. This will create a 3D effect.
• Make sure that the butterflies are all the same shape. Use a stencil or a craft punch to make them. They should be 2 to 3 inches (5.1 to 7.6 cm) across.
• For a unique look, use paper in various colors.

• Keep the shapes simple, such as circles or squares.
• For a 3D effect, fold each of the shapes in half, so that the papers are pointing away from each other. Do 1 side of the garland first, then the other.
• Backstitch when you start and finish sewing so that the stitching doesn't come undone.

• Repeat this step to fill your string up with as many triangles as you want.
• The size of the triangles does not matter, but they should all be the same.
• Hang the garland above your bed, dresser, or window.
• If you want to create a banner for the holidays, cut the triangles out of decorative wrapping paper.

• This will only work with the butterfly and circle style garlands mentioned above. It won't work with a pennant style garland.

• To fold into thirds: fold the cupcake liner into fourths first, then fold it over 1 more time.
• You can use string lights with a white cable or green cable. LED lights would work the best. Don't leave the lights on unattended.

Decorating Furniture

• Let each layer of decoupage glue dry before you add the next coat.
• Feel free to stick with 1 kind of paper or layer different papers for an eclectic look.

• Start from the bottom of the lamp and work your way up. Make sure that the curved edges of the scales are pointing down.
• Mix-and-match the shades in the same row, or use 1 shade per row to create an ombre effect.
• The size of the scales does not really matter, but 2 to 3 inches (5.1 to 7.6 cm) would be good.

• Match the color of the roses to your lampshade, or use a contrasting color.
• Don't combine this with the scales. Choose 1 or the other.

• Decoupage over the paper to make it permanent.
• Use double-sided tape to secure the corners of the paper, if desired.
• Use wrapping paper for large drawers, and scrapbooking paper for small drawers.

• Make the table runner wider by gluing more doilies to the sides.
• You can find paper doilies in the baking section of a craft store.

My room is kind of a mirror, in which I see what I want to see, a strong, young Latina  who  will do anything to succeed, and not necessarily what everybody else sees. I see things about me that someone else might not. Some people will see only the superficial part of me ,  but if they become an important part of my life, I want to show them the best of me. I want them to understand I work hard to improve myself ,  and I drive myself to succeed :  I am resilient and strong.  

I also love to read in my room. A book can teach you many lessons. It can keep you in your room physically but take your mind anywhere. In reading, you can achieve a tranquility and understanding that you can’t find anywhere else. You can liberate your imagination. I think about what a story is trying to say to me.   The  book  Carry On  by Rainbow Rowell, for example, has taught me how we don’t always get what we want and that we have to go through many struggles in our lives to achieve our goals. It’s easier, I think, to understand the true message in a place that I can connect to, a place that I’ve made my own.  

I’ve experienced a whole range of emotions in my room. I’ve laughed and cried, celebrated a birth in the family and mourned the death of grandparents.  

My room is a place that has taught me many things. I learned to make good decisions, to let go of things that can’t be changed – and  especially  to learn from the past in order to make myself a better person in the future.   

My room may be small, but it has had a huge impact on my life.

Original Text: Descriptive Essay: My Bedroom My bedroom is my favorite room in my house. I enjoy my bedroom because it describes me. The things that describe me the most in my room are the wall colors, bedroom suit, and the decorations. Over the years, my room has changed from being a “kid” room to being a “teenage” room. When I was younger my mom decorated my room. When I was younger, I could not wait until I was older so that I could decorate my room however I wanted. When I was younger I had to share a bedroom with my sister. I finally moved into my own room when my brother moved out. This seemed like one of the greatest days of my life. The smell of my room makes me think of the spring time when all of the flowers are blooming. When I enter my room I hear my radio, which reminds me of a day of listening to music and hanging out with friends. My walls are as chocolate as a Hershey bar. The reason that I chose this color brown for my room is that it matched a lot of colors and it is unusual for people to have a chocolate brown room. I also like this color because it is easy to match things with. When I was younger my bedroom was very girly and brightly painted. My wall color was yellow before we painted it. I have a wooden bedroom suit. I have a queen size bed, a nightstand, and two dressers. They all match. The comforter on my bed is pink, green, and white, and it is made by Polo Ralph Lauren. It describes the girly side of me. Before I had a queen size bed, I had a twin size bed. It was really small. I enjoy my much larger bed now. My nightstand comes in handy for storing my midnight snack and drink. The two dressers give me more space to hold my massive collection of t-shirts.
