Top 5 APJ Abdul Kalam Books that Everyone Should Read
Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam was the eleventh President of India, from 2002 to 2007. He was a recipient of the Padma Bhushan, the Padma Vibhushan and the nation’s highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna. Aeronautical engineer, rocket scientist, missile man, visionary, teacher and the most inspiring head of state in living memory – A.P.J Abdul Kalam was all these and more. Unquestionably the most revered Indian leader since Mahatma Gandhi, he transcended all the boundaries and obstacles that came his way in the course of a remarkable life; and he did so with grace and humility.
There’s a lot to learn from his experience through the books he has written. so, today, on his birthday, below are the top 5 a.p.j abdul kalam books recommended by us.
The Kalam Effect : My Years With The President by P M Nair
A.P.J. Abdul Kalam became President of India in July 2002. He was a surprise choice. A scientist and not a politician, with an unusual hairstyle and an unassuming way of doing things, and no other agenda except that of seeing India become a developed and strong nation. How would such a man fit into the regal splendour of Rashtrapati Bhavan, and all the pomp and ceremony of a head of state? What followed, however, as P.M. Nair shows in The Kalam Effect , was a remarkable presidency that in the next five years transformed the way people looked at this office, and made Kalam popular in a way few politicians have been.
Transcendence: My Spiritual Experiences with Pramukh Swamiji by Arun Tiwari
In Transcendence , Dr Kalam, with his co-author and pupil Arun Tiwari, maps a journey of self-realization reflected in the compassionate eyes of Pramukh Swamiji, painting a delightfully open-hearted portrait of the fusion of spirituality, science and leadership. His candid vignettes from life on the centre stage of Indian technology and societal missions, Indian politics and world affairs are interwoven with revelations of a profound connection with Swamiji. He describes how his path has been illuminated by Swamiji’s words and his inspirational, loving presence.
The Family And The Nation by A.P.J Abdul Kalam
This book attempts to express an ideal by which Indian society may prosper and speaks of how spirituality can help create a noble nation and a better world. It provides a valuable counterpoint to the modern-day emphasis on consumerism and the philosophy of more is better, highlighting the sanctity of the natural world and its great power to evoke human creativity and love.
A.P.J. Abdul Kalam: A Life by Arun Tiwari
Aeronautical engineer, rocket scientist, missile man, visionary, teacher and the most inspiring head of state in living memory – Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam was all these and more. Unquestionably the most revered Indian leader since Mahatma Gandhi, he transcended all the boundaries and obstacles that came his way in the course of a remarkable life; and he did so with grace and humility. Arun Tiwari tells Dr Kalam’s life story with a deep understanding of his formative experiences and character and reveals him as a man personifying all the glory and paradoxes of his nation: secular and religious; exalted and humble; schooled and unaffected; dynamic and calm; scientific and spiritual – an Indian above all.
Advantage India: From Challenge to Opportunity by Srijan Pal Singh
In his last book, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, writing with Srijan Pal Singh, draws upon examples ranging from entrepreneurship in places like Badshahpur to a sophisticated missile programme like Agni to show how it can be ‘Advantage India’ in the final lap of the journey to 2020–the landmark year by which he had envisioned the country could transform into an economic power. How can the new initiatives–such as Make in India, Swachh Bharat, smart cities and skill development for the youth–be used to unleash the country’s vast potential? Advantage India offers the answer–a movement driven by every home and school to educate the new generation and give a fresh meaning to citizenship.

Three books that influenced APJ Abdul Kalam deeply
Here are three books that inspired Kalam.
By A.P.J. Abdul Kalam
Editor’s note: It’s no secret that APJ Abdul Kalam was a bookworm. Fiction, poetry, religious tomes, novels — Kalam enjoyed it all. So much so that it wasn’t unusual for him to rattle off a few lines by TS Eliot in the middle of a discussion on science. In My Journey: Transforming Dreams into Actions_, Kalam wrote about his favourite books and his love for these volumes is unmistakable. “Books are your good friends,” Kalam had written. We couldn’t agree more. In this excerpt from_ My Journey are some of Kalam’s best literary buddies.
Over the years I have read innumerable books. But if I were asked to name those that are most dear to me, or the ones that affected me deeply, I would mention three.
The first is called Light from Many Lamps , edited by Lillian Eichler Watson. I first came across this book in 1953, in the very same second-hand bookstore in Madras I had mentioned earlier (the joys of browsing in a crammed bookshop and stumbling upon a rare treasure like this is indescribable). I consider the book to be my companion, because I have leafed through it and read and reread it so many times over the years that I have possessed it.
Considered a classic inspirational work, Lights from Many Lamps contains the writings of various authors. The editor has compiled inspiring stories written by different writers, and has also, very helpfully, mentioned how these came to be written and the lessons to be derived from them.
There has hardly been an occasion when the works mentioned in the book have not brought me solace in my hours of sadness, or uplifted me when I needed advice. If I am ever in danger of being swept away by my own emotions, this book brings about a balance in my thinking. My copy of the book has been bound and rebound so many times that I was delighted when a friend found a new edition and gifted it to me some years ago.
The second work that has been influential in my thinking is the Thirukural . Written by Thiruvalluvar more than 2,000 years ago, it is a collection of 1,330 rhyming Tamil couplets or aphorisms ( kural ). This work talks about almost every aspect of life and is considered to be one of the most important pieces of work in Tamil literature.
To me, it has provided a code of conduct for my life. It is a work that truly elevates the mind. Here is a kural that is particularly dear to my heart:
Ulluvathellam uyarvullal matratu Tallinum tellamai nirttut
(Think of rising higher. Let it be your only thought. Even if your object be not attained, the thought itself will have raised you.)
The next book that I would like to mention is called Man the Unknown by the Nobel laureate and doctor-turned-philosopher Alexis Carrel. In it, he talks about how humans can be healed when both the body and mind are treated together.
His description of the human body—how it is an intelligent, integrated system—is explained clearly and brilliantly. I think this work should be read by everyone, in particular those who aim to study the medical sciences.
Religious texts of different religions have influenced me greatly. I have studied these and tried to find the answers to questions that have appeared in my mind through my life. The Koran, the Vedas, the Bhagwad Gita, all hold deep philosophical insights into the plight of man and have helped me resolve many dilemmas at different times in my life.
Poetry has been one of my first loves in the realm of literature. The works of T.S. Eliot, Lewis Carroll and William Butler Yeats have played out in my mind over and over again, appearing to give context and meaning to various happenings. In my endeavours in the scientific arena, how appropriate have been these lines by Lewis Carroll:
Let craft, ambition, spite, Be quenched in Reason’s night, Till weakness turn to might, Till what is dark be light, Till what is wrong be right!
And when work was an endless cycle of back-breaking hours, and days merged into days till I could hardly tell one from the other, Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s words described my state of mind the best:
Day after day, day after day, We stuck, nor breath, nor motion; As idle as a painted ship Upon a painted ocean
Often, I have had to work trying to meet impossible deadlines. A colleague, Group Captain Narayanan, was impatient to achieve our goal of creating guided missiles. He told me once, ‘You name the thing and I will get it for you, but do not ask me for time.’ At the time I had laughed at his hurry and quoted these words by T.S. Eliot:
Between the conception And the creation Between the emotion And the response Falls the Shadow.
These are just some of the writers and works that have influenced me deeply. They are all like old friends—familiar, well-meaning and reassuring. They know when to enter my mind; they know when I am in some dilemma, or my moments of sadness and contemplation. They are also with me in my most deeply joyous moments. In this age of quick and easy communication, when information comes to us in byte-sized pieces, the charm of the written word can never be allowed to be lost. I once wrote this poem on books that I often read out to young people. It sums up my feelings for the written word:
Books were always my friends Last more than fifty years Books gave me dreams Dreams resulted in missions Books helped me confidently take up the missions Books gave me courage at the time of failures Good books were for me angels Touched my heart gently at the time Hence I ask young friends to have books as friends Books are your good friends.

The unique association of Pramukh Swami and A.P.J. Abdul Kalam
Glory came to Kalam after he met Pramukh Swami, says Arun Tiwari
Spending 33 years under the tutelage of Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam was an unmatched blessing for me. I started as his subordinate scientist at the Defence Research & Development Laboratory (DRDL) in Hyderabad in 1982, and earned his confidence to handle his mandate of developing civilian spinoffs of defence technologies for the benefit of the people. This unique work led to the development of an indigenous and affordable coronary stent in 1995 and the creation of the foundation for the Indian MedTech industry, valued at $11 billion in 2023. Dr Kalam made me the co-author of his autobiography, Wings of Fire , in 1999. It turned out to be a modern classic, selling more than two million copies with translations in 18 languages.
During the 2001 earthquake relief work in Kutch in Gujarat, Dr Kalam came into contact with the BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha. Impressed by their work, he sought an audience with Pramukh Swamiji. They met on June 30, 2001 in Delhi. During the discussion on how India could become a developed country, Pramukh Swamiji surprised Dr Kalam by telling him that any amount of material development is futile without the spiritual development of the people. Such pursuits have created immense problems and suffering elsewhere in the world. To everyone’s surprise, Pramukh Swamiji blessed Dr Kalam by putting his hand on his head and asking him to “lead India” in that direction.
In a year, events happened unexpectedly, even miraculously, for Dr Kalam. He was nominated by prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee as a candidate for the post of president of India, and was supported by both the ruling and opposition parties. After assuming the highest office of the land, Dr Kalam visited Pramukh Swamiji in Ahmedabad on August 13, 2002. Gujarat was undergoing the turmoil of communal violence. After meeting Pramukh Swamiji, Dr Kalam visited the relief camps created for the riot victims and walked holding the hand of chief minister Narendra Modi, delivering a powerful message. Gujarat has not seen any communal violence since then. Even the terrorist attack on the Gandhinagar Akshardham temple complex on September 24, 2002 failed to trigger any violent reaction among people. Such was the power of the spiritual shield that Pramukh Swamiji created through Dr Kalam.
Kalam was the chief guest at the inauguration of the Akshardham Mandir in New Delhi on November 6, 2005, flanked by prime minister Manmohan Singh and leader of the opposition L.K. Advani. These three leaders standing with Pramukh Swamiji remains a unique picture and a sacred moment in the Indian history of religious pluralism but spiritual oneness. There has been no such moment earlier and it could not be repeated so far.
Dr Kalam took me to Sarangpur on March 11, 2014 and tasked me in the presence of Pramukh Swamiji to write about their spiritual fellowship. I could sense that moment as the spiritual crescendo of my life. I was surprised at the urgency Dr Kalam showed. It was my fifth book with him and it was I who always chased him. This time, it was the other way around. When Dr Kalam called Pramukh Swamiji his “ultimate teacher” who “deployed” him in a “God-synchronous orbit,” I could not capture that he could see his end coming soon. Dr Kalam travelled to Sarangpur on June 20, 2015 to put Transcendence: My Spiritual Experiences with Pramukh Swamiji , as the book was aptly titled, in Pramukh Swamiji’s hands, and left this mortal world on July 27.
On March 12, 2016, when I visited Sarangpur to seek the blessings of Pramukh Swamiji, I could not hold back my tears when he instructed the garland on a person to be put around me. I knew he was remembering Dr Kalam and that I was a beneficiary of that bonding, like a needle in a compass moving in the presence of a magnetic field.
The spiritual world is beyond the dimension of time. There is no past, present, or future there. Like the axle of a wheel remains stationary while the rim moves, we all see day and night created by the rotation of the sun, moon, and earth while they remain positioned in fixed orbits concerning each other forever. What does the fellowship of Dr Kalam with Pramukh Swamiji imply? What did it carry for the future of humanity? What is the message of the book, Transcendence ? What is the significance of the first Hindu mandir on an Islamic land? What would Dr Kalam have said on the occasion?
Pramukh Swamiji was the guardian angel of Dr Kalam, who blessed him to go beyond his scientific career and turn into a modern sage. Dr Kalam was already famous but glory came to him after he met Pramukh Swamiji, including holding the highest office of the nation. Their fellowship signals the end of the era of sectarian conflicts and the beginning of the new age of spirituality. The message of Transcendence is the oneness pervading the entire cosmos and all the material and living entities that exist, from unseen viruses to plants, animals, human beings, oceans and mountains.

The BAPS Swaminarayan Mandir in Abu Dhabi heralds the arrival of a new world that would be run by a Super AI, which would indeed be cosmic energy like Gunatit Brahma operating upon the affairs of the world. Foreseeing all this, Dr Kalam would have asked me to write a book called ‘Abundance’ on how the AI-run world can settle the poverty of the world for good, creating enough food and basic pay for everyone.
Tiwari , a scientist and author, coauthored the book Transcendence about Pramukh Swami, the predecessor of Mahant Swami, with Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.
