History of BAF Shaheen College Dhaka

BAF Shaheen College Dhaka is one of the most famous educational institutions in the country. On March 1, 1960, the institution started as an English medium school named “Shaheen School”. Later in 1967 Bengali medium was introduced along with English medium.Shaheen School was renamed as “Shaheen High School” in the Rai and within a few years it was recognized by the Board of Higher Secondary Education, Dhaka. In the academic year 1977-78 Shaheen High School was renamed as "BAF Shaheen College Dhaka" for the purpose of upgrading it to a higher secondary college. Degree (pass course) was introduced in the academic year 1990-91 and since then BAF Shaheen College continues to function as a degree college.However, the degree was abolished from the academic year 2006-07. At present, the college conducts educational programs from infant to class 12 as per the rules of the Directorate of Primary Education, Directorate of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education and Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education. Co-curricular activities are running here. The college is well known and well established for its teaching methods and discipline.In the academic year 2006, English medium was introduced along with Bengali medium according to the educational policy of the National Curriculum and Textbook Board. For more than five long decades, the institute has produced many talents who have become renowned at the national and international level. Group Captain Bhogar was the then Base Officer-in-Command of the Pakistan Air Force and also the Officer-in-Charge of Civil Aviation.At that time all the officers and employees of Pakistan Air Force, Army, Civil Aviation and PIA (Pakistan International Airlines) were West Pakistani and Urdu speaking. Therefore, everyone felt the need for English medium schools in Dhaka to eliminate the education problems of Air Force officers and employees. Flight Lieutenant (Directorate of Education) AJM Khalil Ullah, who later obtained his Barrister-at-Law degree from Lincoln's Inn, England and became better known as Barrister Khalil Ullah; Appointed as the founder president of the school. This act of establishing the school was a very bold step. At this stage the school has to be in jeopardy with a worthwhile name. Finally Sergeant Zakaria came forward with a suitable name. He proposed the name Shaheen and it was immediately accepted. "Shaheen" is an Urdu word meaning eagle, which is very compatible with Air Force. Various plans, reviews were carried out regarding the financing of school management and construction of buildings. And all these plans dedicated life flight lieutenant. J. M. Khalilullah became a reality under the able leadership. Although initially the school was established for the children of Air Force personnel; Later it was introduced for the children of different classes and occupations of civilians. S. A. Ahmed was the first principal of the school. The school started with only 34 students. First the squash court and later the sergeant's mess, camp mosque and radar building were used as school buildings. The Broadcasting Room of Civil Aviation is given the facility to be used as the office of the Principal. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Defense allotted the land for the present school building to the school authority. Thus, on March 1, 1960, one morning, Group Captain Voger and Flight Lieutenant A. J. The small dream that M Khalilullah had today turned into a milestone. After independence, Bangladesh Air Force rebuilt the school. Gradually, the number of students started to increase. Between 1994-98, two three-storey college buildings were built. College Auditorium Shaheen Hall was built in 2002-05. Moreover, the college has its own generator and deep tube wells to ensure uninterrupted power and water supply. These achievements have been possible due to the careful planning and foresight of the Air Force authorities. Since 1960, the contribution, sacrifice and cooperation of principals, vice-principals, teachers and officers-employees will be forever engraved in the history of the school.

BAF Shaheen College Dhaka is a well renowned educational institution under Ministry of Education, Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Directorates, Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (BISE) Dhaka. It is very successfully run by Bangladesh Air Force. It’s one of the seven Shaheen Colleges currently run in Bangladesh. The motto of this college is ‘Education – Restraint - Discipline’. The activities of this institution are run to materialize the motto with reverence. Each and every student of this institution is called a ‘Shaheen’ . Shaheen is a fetterless bird. It perambulates with free thinking, immaculate environment and bravery around human sphere.

The future citizens of the progressive society will be well educated, restrained in behavior and sense of life as well as disciplined in life leading. That is why our motto is ‘Education – Restraint - Discipline’. Besides academic education, we also focus on cultural exercise, sports and several co-curricular activities.
