A Smarter Way to Clean Your Home

By Jolie Kerr

Illustrations by Abbey Lossing

Every home — big, small, apartment or vacation home — gets dirty. And while there’s not just one way to clean your living space, there is a smarter way to get the job done. Take this guided tour of your home — from the kitchen and bathroom to the bedroom and living areas — to learn the basic rules of cleaning as well as some tips and short cuts that will help you clean thoroughly and efficiently, starting now.

Wirecutter, a New York Times company, has spent hours testing cleaning products and you’ll see I reference them when they’ve reviewed products I recommend.

In the kitchen, wiping surfaces, keeping tabs on the fridge and washing dishes every day will prevent big time-consuming messes down the line.

An illustration of a man and a woman in a kitchen, she washes dishes while he throws left over and rotting food into a trash can.

Keep Dishes Clean

If you’re a person who tends to let dishes pile up in the sink to avoid washing them, try this simple trick to put the effort involved into perspective: For a few days, as you think of it, set a timer before you begin washing the dishes, and make note of how long it took to clean up. If you know the task will take just minutes to complete, it will be less difficult to convince yourself to take care of those dishes now.

How Important Is Keeping a Clean House?

According to Op-Ed writer Stephen Marche, "Every well-managed household is full of such minor insanities" when delegating chores. <a href="//www.nytimes.com/2013/12/08/opinion/sunday/the-case-for-filth.html">Go to related Opinion piece »</a>

In any home, some cleaning-related tasks spark dread in some members of the household, while others don’t mind them at all. For example, one person might detest emptying the dishwasher, and therefore, complete other chores that he or she likes more, or at least is willing to do.

Do you think it’s fair to be able to pick and choose when it comes to cleaning and home maintenance? What if everyone likes and dislikes the same tasks? How are chores delegated in your household?

In the Op-Ed piece “The Case for Filth,” Stephen Marche suggests a solution to issues like the gender divide that keeps women doing more of the housework than men and even disagreements over what constitutes a household chore: everyone cleaning less. He begins:

In Claire Messud’s novel “The Emperor’s Children,” the ultraliberal Murray Thwaite comes home late, steps in cat vomit and keeps walking: “It still was not, nor could it ever be, his role to clean up cat sick,” Ms. Messud writes. The boomer hypocrite is practically a comic type by this point, but in his domestic disregard, Murray Thwaite is like most other men, liberal or conservative, old or young. Unlike many other rubrics by which you can establish the balance of power between men and women, there isn’t much evidence of a cohort shift in housework. Younger men are doing roughly the same amount of work around the house as their fathers did. It doesn’t look like they’re going to start doing more, either. Women today make up 40 percent of America’s sole or primary breadwinners for families with children under 18, a share that has quadrupled since 1960. And yet in America as well as in several other countries in the developed world, men’s time investment in housework has not significantly altered in nearly 30 years. A recent, large cross-national study on the subject by an Ohio State sociologist found that “women’s housework did not decline significantly and men’s housework did not increase significantly after the mid-1980s in the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands.” In the United States, men’s participation in housework topped out at 94 minutes at day in 1998, but by 2003 was down to 81 minutes, not much different than the 76 minutes it was in 1985. Think of all the other changes that men have undertaken in the period between 1980 and 2010. Taking care of kids used to be women’s work, too, but now the man with his kids is an icon of manliness. Foodie snobbism has taken on a macho edge in some circles, to the point where the properly brined Thanksgiving turkey can be a status symbol of masculine achievement. So why won’t men pick up a broom? Why won’t they organize a closet? Why can’t housework be converted — as the former burdens of food preparation and child rearing seem to have been for some men — into a source of manly pride and joy? Why would housework be the particular place to stall? At least one thing is becoming clear: The only possible solution to the housework discrepancy is for everyone to do a lot less of it.

Students: Read the entire Op-Ed piece, then tell us …

  • Mr. Marche states that cooking and child-rearing are now “cool” for men. Why do you taking care of the home hasn’t “caught on” to the same degree? Is this comparison valid? Why or why not?
  • A November Student Opinion question asked about ordinary tasks you would pay someone else to do for you, if you could. Would cleaning your room or completing other household chores be on your list? Why or why not?

Keeping a clean house is important because of hygene. A clean environment is essntial to living a healthier life. However, this doesn’t mean that people should obsess over their cleaning. Keep a good balance.

My motto is “A place for everything and everything in its place,” The floor is a place! I seldom do housework. On the rare occasions when I can afford it, I pay someone else, usually just to keep the living room moderately presentable. My adult son helps by lugging out the trash and changing the kitty litter. Mostly, I just keep organized enough to know which pile of clutter the item I need is buried in. But somehow I manage to keep my work (calligraphy) spotlessly clean.

I sometimes enjoy cleaning when i have help and i like to turn it into a game or contest to make it fun. When i clean with my sister, we usually make a bet and who every finishes first gets 10 dollars.

Its very important that you keep a house clean. That’s the way other people look at you by the way your house is set up.

Keeping a clean house is very important. Your house represents you. If you have a clean house, then you are a clean person. If your house is not clean, then you will be viewed as something else in my opinion.

Having a clean house is important you’ll never know who is comming to visit at anyday and if your house is not in the coorect stature it will give the visitor a bad oppinion and mindset about you and your cleanliness

a tidy enviorment is somewhat important to me, its important to me because i dont like being in the same room with alot of clutter. I rather a room be straightened up where i can find things if not completely clean.

I think it’s important to have a clean house, knowing that evryone sees clean in their own way i feel having a clean house inside and out speaks for your community and yourself. It helps’ beautify the community

I think that keeping your house clean is very important, especially if you have any household pets. Keeping a house clean keeps bacteria at bay. It also keeps things organized and neat.

So this is an issue in my household we strugle with this every week. every one has a busy scedule in my house so when we get home we are all tired. bt we have been making adjustments to thisand trying to keep the house in order. my parents feel that it is all on the kids to keep the house clean. they want us to clean and cook everyday but time is . our house isn’t filthy but it could be better

It is very important to keep a clean house. No one wants to sit in a nasty house because you can attract bugs and other unpleasant things in your home. I don’t even think its healthy to keep a dirty home because keeping a dirty home can cause different types of medical issues. However I don’t believe in having said “chores”. In my house we go by “You mess it up, you clean it up.” However I do think its important to have a day where its nothing but clean up. You clean your own room, the kitchen, bathroom, or whatever. That’s what we do in our home. You clean your own room on your own time, and if you dirty up the kitchen you clean it. And in some cases the bathroom. But as far as stuff like living room or hallway or something then its a set time to clean up, but those rooms hardly ever get dirty.

Being a teenager I see a clean home differently. Just because everything isn’t organized doesn’t mean it’s a mess. I go through that with my mother all the time reguarding my room. I personally feel like if the the floor looks clean it is clean, no need for me to grab a broom for dirt no one can see.

Oh Lordie! Is important to keep clean your house? Of course, it is! Cleanliness is next to Godliness. Plus it’s very unhelathy to live in a dirty home.

No I do not enjoy cleaning but if it keeps a homely environment and keeps my parents contempt then I’ll do it.

It is very important to keep a clean house because it takes away the germs and bacteria, and the dirt period. It is also important to keep a clean house because if people come over your house, it would be embarassing to have a dirty house. It would have them talk about it to other people and give you a bad name, also avoid people from coming to your house.

Cleaning your house is very important because you don’t want to have bugs, or to find food on the floor or hinden somewhere under your bed or similar.

Clean houses keep roaches away. No one likes roaches. People seem to judge you by the way your house looks and it would not be pretty if they saw roaches crawling around.

I think that keeping a house clean is very important. It serves to making life easier and more productive. Some people actually do focus better in clutter, but it is still good to live in a clean area in case of fire, medical issues, or any other types of disasters.

At my house I do the chores in exchange for my phone bill being paid.

I think it is very important to keep your house clean. Who wants a dirty house? It is very important to keep a clean house, it’s not healthy to keep a dirty house.

I think it is very necessary to have a clean and healthy home. It helps prevent bug infestations. It’s also safer, it makes it easier to move in case of emergencies. Plus, people can find it easier to judge you with a dirty home, clean houses gives you an overall better appearance. It can also be based on how hard of a worker you are, with a dirty home people could think you’re too lazy to even pick up a little bit in your own house.

its pretty important to have a clean house it shows how you are as a person being dirty isnt okay for anyone

I think its important to keep a clean house because , a clean house is a happy house . No one wants t sleep or et or even be in a dirty houe , its not only NOT healthy as well as not a good look, your houe can be so dirty that its infested with mice , roaches or other mysterious bugs . and you affect your neighbors with you dirty habts . When a house is clean you sleep better ! like said before a happy house is a clean houe . !

It is important to keep a clean house because its nasty not to be clean. If your house is dirty you will carry the smell with you. No one wants to smell anything that isnt plesent. If your house is dirty it can cause mice, and other creatures or insects its bad for your health.

Having a clean home reduces clutter in your life and is overall more appealing in life.I find that women maintain cleanliness more than men.Just one of many things women do better.

It further involves keeping our mind from filthiness. While a theist should spend time every day to confess the wrongdoings and receive forgiveness, an atheist needs to spend time on meditation on a regular basis. Keeping ones thoughts clean is as important as physical cleanliness.

Next to personal cleanliness comes keeping the dwelling place neat and clean. Starting with disposing the garbage on a daily basis, it includes cleaning up all rooms on a regular basis, maintaining bedcovers and curtains, trimming the interior and exterior garden, keeping the kitchen sink and toilet free of unpleasant smell, insects etc. It also includes proper disposal of solid and liquid waste into the municipal dustbin and drainage system.

Apart from the basic cleanliness activities done at home, the workplace needs additional application of disinfectants, air filters, and waste disposal systems to maintain hygiene and dignity. It needs still more attention at Hospitals, Restaurants and like industries.

iv. Public Places:

Living in communities, it is important to keep public places like roads, beaches, parks etc. neat and clean. If each citizen becomes responsible and could show the same care that is taken for home and workplace, then the city and the entire country would have a clean environment to live, work and play.

Benefits of Cleanliness:

Since health is wealth, cleanliness prevents diseases, promotes good health and thereby preserves our wealth. It maintains discipline at all levels. It promotes self-respect and self-confidence of the family, institution, city and country. A clean environment gives a cheerful mind to improve and progress.

How to Nurture Cleanliness:

Although it is best to learn cleanliness from childhood, it could be developed at point of life whenever the sensitivity is achieved. Being careful and regular on a daily basis is the success mantra for cleanliness. It has nothing to do with being rich. So, it could be achieved by anyone in the society irrespective of their social status and wealth.

Champions of Cleanliness:

The first Prime Minister of Singapore, Lee Kuan Yew started the campaign to keep the country clean almost 50 years ago. It made the place pleasant and added value to its economy. The sickness rate is low, life expectancy is more, tourism has flourished and all the citizens benefit from it.

Learning cleanliness from his days in the West, Mahatma Gandhi insisted that a lavatory must be as clean as a drawing room. He strongly believed that cleanliness would promote good health and hence advocated it throughout his lifetime.

Following Gandhi’s model, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has initiated a nation-wide campaign called Swach Bharat on 2nd October, 2014. It functions to provide sanitation facilities, proper solid and liquid waste disposal systems, and safe drinking water.

Cleanliness adds more value to personal and social life. Since good habits are contagious, it is possible to teach children, neighbours and illiterates on the importance of cleanliness, by being a role model. With a collective effort, cleanliness and in turn, good health and happiness are within reach.

Keeping our mind, body, home, neighborhood and workplace Clean and Green is “Cleanliness.” It is one of the most important habits we develop since childhood. We cannot ignore the value of cleanliness and hygiene in our lives. Habits learned in the early phase of our live stays implanted in our mind for a more extended period. Being clean and keeping green is a lifestyle we need to adapt for leading a healthy life.

Cleanliness is not just limited to sanitation of the area where you live. It has a pivotal role in your personal life. Cleanliness in attitude and thoughts play an important element to become a successful person in life. External cleanliness is related to the sanitation of your home and premises. But, it is equally important to have internal cleanliness – the cleanliness of the soul. Removing garbage, dirt and foul smell, etc., are part of sanitation, which helps to maintain the cleanliness of your living surroundings.

It is an imperative factor in life, and everybody must be conscious about the importance to maintain cleanliness. A dirty mind and surrounding is indeed a reason for a person becoming sick. Therefore we have to put conscious effort to maintain a healthy atmosphere by keeping the surrounding clean and keeping oneself clean.

Is it a key to achieve our goals?

Yes, we as an individual hesitate to understand the importance and value of cleanliness in our daily routines. It is not the goal, but it plays a vital role in achieving our goals. Personal hygiene gets affected easily if we don’t take proper measures to maintain cleanliness. And an unclean state of body and mindset can easily distract you from your desired goal. It will stop you, affect your performance and capabilities of your living standard.

For a healthy lifestyle, we need to respect our environment, body, and mind. Right steps taken at the right time will help in building our nation. The enchanted beauty will bring more foreign tourists to our land which will increase the tourism business. Remember, not a single tourist would like to visit a foul land. We, ourselves encourages and strikes the places with mesmerizing beauties. Thus, we should adopt a lifestyle to nurture our surroundings.

Only the sincere efforts of following certain manners could give a better surrounding. Every government has to play a vital role to carry out cleanliness awareness drives and make sure that people respect the cleanliness laws. The government needs to take strict actions against people who are responsible for littering public places and throw garbage on the roads. Keeping the neighborhood unclean is a shabby practice which causes health issues. A healthy and positive mindset with a good physique is the balance sheet of cleanliness.

Pollution is one of the primary reason for the unhygienic living condition. Making changes in the lifestyle can save our neighborhood from pollution. We have to develop a recycling culture and all materials that are recyclable should go to the recycling plant. It can stop material pollution and spoiling the environment. Purchasing the products made of non-toxic materials will help to preserve valuable resources. Let’s say, investing in reliable and durable household items and reuse them in the future instead of purchasing disposable items will help to maintain a clean environment.

To maintain a healthy environment, we need to look out for greenery and stop felling trees. Trees are an essential resource to purify and control pollution. More trees in our surroundings equal healthy environment and a fresh mindset. Water – one of the most necessary resource needs to be utilized and stored efficiently. Never allow to contaminate water.

Planting the importance of cleanliness among society is essential to motivate the individuals keeping their surrounding clean. There should be a proper awareness campaign to reinforce the need for sanitation, and it can be easy to adopt a strategy to involve students, social and service organization to be part of the drive.

A joint campaign by involving all section of the society is essential to accomplish total cleanliness of a state. If each of us can put their effort to maintain the cleanliness, then it will have a significant impact on the society. Inclusive cleanliness awareness campaign will be helpful in spreading the importance of the subject, and people will start to adopt cleaning the surrounding as their responsibility.

To see the much-awaited change, we need to take strict actions and act with sincerity. Corrective measures required instead of complaining about the pollution. Make everybody responsible for cleaning their premises by actively involving them. Students can start their effort by cleaning their school campus; government officials can engage in cleaning their office and premises, factory employees can participate in cleaning their factory and surrounding, etc. A combined effort of all sections of the society can make a lot of changes in the nation and attitude of the individuals towards cleanliness.

As we live in a society, we are a part of our surroundings, so we need to understand our responsibility as an individual, we should encourage the efforts made by others’ and contribute to ensuring a healthy surrounding. Systematic collection and segregation of waste depending on the scope of recyclability should strictly implement to maintain sustainable cleanliness. For maintaining cleanliness of the environment, we need to process biodegradable and non-degradable waste separately. Similarly, for personal cleanliness, we have to keep our body clean.

Cleanliness has different meanings depending on the matter of discussion. With regard to religion, cleanliness is the state of being pure, without moral contamination. When the subject matter is on the environment, it is the state of being free from dirt. Environmental cleanliness is what most people are familiar with because of the daily interaction with the environment and the impact they have on the lives of individuals with regard to health and expectations of the society. Cleanliness of the environment include everything on the surface of the earth. There are different types of cleanliness in the environment. Mostly, the environmental cleanliness is emphasized during prevention of pollution and health education in the society. Cleanliness of religion varies with the specific religion and its beliefs. The importance of cleanliness is realized in both spiritual and physical aspects. The society s place double standard on cleanliness such that, whatever is clean is admired and fought for.

Types of Cleanliness:

There are two major types of cleanliness i.e., physical cleanliness and spiritual cleanliness. Physical cleanliness has several subtypes according to the object being cleaned. Physical cleanliness involves elimination of dirt and impurities from the body, clothes, food, houses and the outside environment. Body cleaning is done through full body bath with soap and water, handwashing practice and keeping away from dirt. Cleaning clothes is a laundry process whereby manual washing by hands can be done or machine washing. Cleaning the environment is through collection of dirt in the environment and disposing them appropriately, while observing the purity of all the three aspects of the environment i.e., air, water and land. When handling food, cleanliness should be observed through hand washing and using of clean cooking and eating utensils so as to prevent ingestion of dirt. The houses and household items should also be kept clean especially the living space, the kitchen, bedrooms and bathrooms because we interact with the house environment more often.

Spiritual cleanliness is basically focused on the removal of moral contamination and being pure in the faith and beliefs of the religion. In Christians, cleanliness means the forgiveness of sin and living according to the Bible doctrines. Christians also have cleanliness of conditions considered impure for example menstruation and childbirth. Christians lay strong emphasis on hygiene in humans. In Islam, cleanliness means the cleanliness of hearts of individuals and the good manners of members of the society. Muslims believe that purification of hearts of individuals from feelings of negativity and bad vices like jealousy enables the society to stay peaceful at all times. Muslims also believe that cleanliness from conditions that are considered ritually impure is important. Hindus believe that cleanliness is a divine quality that should be practiced by individuals. Bhagavad Gita describes cleanliness with relation to the Hindu society virtues and qualities that individuals must acquire in order to be given grace by God. Hindus also perform cleanliness through visiting the seven rivers to bathe and purify their minds.

Cleanliness is a vital component of human life both physically and spiritually. Spiritual cleanliness is important in being on the right with your God and following the beliefs and rituals of your religion. On the other hand, physical cleanliness is important in the wellbeing and existence of humanity.

Cleanliness is necessary for health and wellness of individuals and the society. Health and cleanliness relate to each other and influence each other. In order to be of good health, one should practice hygiene. Hygiene is basically the practice of maintaining good health and preventing diseases through cleanliness. Cleanliness of the body, food and environment contribute to the wellbeing of an individual health wise. Cleanliness prevents disease because dirt usually harbors infective pathogens that cause disease to human beings when they get exposed to them. Hygienic practices are highly advocated for by health professionals because it is better to prevent a disease than to wait and seek treatment for it. Hygienic practices prolong the lives of individuals because they will be free of illnesses.

Safety is enabled through cleanliness of the environment. The environment that we interact with often needs to be clean so that accidents can be prevented. For example, in the workplace, daily cleaning will ensure that there are no water spills on the floor that could cause a fall. Clearing bushes around homes provide safety from harmful insects and animals like snakes. Cleaning not only involves the act of clearing bushes and washing floors, but also the organization of the environment. Through organization, harmful objects can be put away so that accidents can be prevented in the environment.

Brand protection can be achieved through cleanliness. In environmental cleanliness, buildings and the surrounding environment are cleaned and organized. As a marketing strategy, cleanliness is an advantage for the brand because it will portray the brand as organized and conducive for human interaction. In this competitive world, cleanliness is a priority consideration for brands. In the food industry, cleanliness is what people look at before they can engage because health well-being is important for individuals.

Cleanliness also enables the extension of a lifespan of an object. With tools and instruments, cleanliness is emphasized because dirt causes reduction of the lifespan like in metallic objects, rust causes destruction of the tools and instruments. In buildings, cleanliness also preserves the integrity and enables longer durability.

Cleanliness is a moral virtue that is admired. When a person is clean, social relations and interactions become easier because society views dirty people as a nuisance and they are inapproachable. Cleanliness is attractive and admirable in the society.

In conclusion, cleanliness in the lives of individuals is unavoidable. Everything surrounding the life of an individual is viable for cleanliness in order to maintain functionality and development. Spiritual cleanliness is mostly focused on purity of self before God and humanity in all religions although the methods of purification are different for each religion. Physical cleanliness is beneficial with regard to human interaction and with the environment in terms of health, safety and lifespan.

Cleaning your house seems like a fairly self-explanatory task, but when you sit down to think about it, you might realize that you have a lot of questions. And how do you clean a toilet, anyway? We'll work it down into a streamlined process that seems simple enough to tackle and instantly gratifying. Once you get started, you won't want to stop until the whole house is spick and span.

Making a Plan

Step 1 Decide how clean you want your house to be and how much time you have.

  • Work from the top down, if at all possible. You don't want to vacuum and then get crumbs all over the floor, or dust the bottom of something and knock more dust down when you work your way up onto the previously uncleaned areas. If you don’t have much time, start with the clutter first and work your way to more serious things from there.
  • For the "average" busy person it works better to do a little bit every day so that the work doesn't pile up, and also have major-cleaning day a few times a month. What style you prefer is up to you (unless you have roommates, of course).
  • Keep a check on areas of the kitchen subject to grease and grime buildup that need regular but less frequent cleaning, such as the tops of cabinets and the kitchen exhaust fan . It can be easy to overlook higher features in the kitchen but grease and grime gather in these areas and attract dust and insects.

Step 2 Make a checklist and a plan of attack.

  • You can follow the steps in the cleaning part in order. This way, you'll have a checklist already written out for you.
  • Make a plan so that you can vacuum, sweep, and mop all rooms at the same time (and so that your hot water doesn't get cold) so you won't have to go from one task and then repeat the same thing again.

Step 3 Attempt to delegate tasks.

  • Make sure the tasks assigned are age-appropriate – i.e. grade school children can pick up their bedroom floors, teenagers can clean the garage or bathroom, etc. It should also be equal – cleaning the toilet is hardly on par with organizing the coffee table; include these areas in your plan, perhaps monthly or every few months.

Cleaning the Bathroom

Step 1 Clean the toilet.

  • After that, squirt an acidic toilet cleaner into the inside of the bowl and around the rim. Let it soak for 10 minutes and then scrub it with a toilet brush. When you’re finished, give it a flush. Then, apply bleach spray to the entire toilet bowl, let it sit for 5 minutes, and give it another good scrub.
  • As a final touch, use pumice to give the toilet a good, hard scrub—this should remove any hard water, calcium, or other difficult spots. A magic eraser may be used as well to brighten the area.
  • When you’re done with the bowl, return back to the outside surfaces. Spray them down with a disinfectant spray and wipe dry with a cloth or paper towel.

Step 2 Clean the shower or tub

  • Use car wax on showers to make it stay cleaner longer (not the floor; you might slip). [1] X Research source For cleaning glass, use a half cup of ammonia and 8 drops of dish soap in a gallon of water to get it all cleansed.

Jennifer Mueller, JD

Jennifer Mueller, JD

"I highly recommend The Pink Stuff for any tough cleaning projects. It really is a miracle worker, especially with built-up soap scum in the bath or shower. As a bonus, there are no toxic fumes to worry about."

Step 3 Clean the sink.

  • If you have some stubborn stains, you may need to use a brush to dig into them and loosen them. A wire-bristled brush (like one you use to clean your shower) is good.

Step 4 Clean the glass/mirrors.

  • First, wash your glass with a solution of warm or hot water, dish soap with a rag, sponge, or squeegee. Powdered no-scratch cleaner works fantastic for cleaning mirrors, glass, ceramics, and metals because it scrubs off hard water residue without scratching the surface. Then wipe down the surface with a dry, lint-free cloth or lint-free paper towels.
  • If you want to clean glass and be environmentally friendly, clean the glass with vinegar and water, dry with a lint-free cloth, and rub the glass with newspaper. No streaks! Make sure you use some elbow grease – it requires pressure to properly clean glass.
  • Alternatively, spray glass cleaner on a paper towel and clean the glass surface. The glass cleaner acts as a shield to help keep spots and dust easy to remove. When misused, glass "cleaner" will leave streaks. You can also use old newspaper to wipe the glass surface after washing; the glass will be streak free and this is a great way to reuse old newspaper.

Cleaning the Kitchen

Step 1 Wash the dishes.

  • Big things like pots and pans are usually best hand-washed because they don't fit well in the dishwasher.
  • Dishes wear out more quickly when washed by machine than by hand because the dishwasher's soap is abrasive; heirloom china, delicate wine glasses, and other really fragile things should be carefully hand-washed instead.

Step 2 Try hand-washing dishes,...

  • If you use the soaking method, picture this: a bucket of brown water with dirt, grease, food particles, millions of germs, and a lot of other things that come off your dirty dishes. Now you know how disgusting (and unsanitary) that soaking water can be. If you need to soak a casserole that has baked-on gunk for ten or fifteen minutes, that's okay, but when you can, it's usually better to just wash the dishes promptly and avoid soaking.
  • Treat coffee-stained mugs with a baking soda paste. After applying the paste and letting it sit for 10 minutes, wash and dry the mugs as you normally would.

Step 3 Dry your dishes, too.

  • Be sure to let your brush, sponge, and dish towel dry between uses to keep them from accumulating germs, too.

Step 4 Clean the oven

  • For the oven, check if there's a self-cleaning setting. That could do the brunt of the work for you. If it does, remove the wire racks to soak in soapy water, complete the self-cleaning cycle and wipe out the ashes at the bottom and then wash it down with some cleaner and a wet rag. If it doesn't have a self-cleaning option, remove the racks to soak in soapy water, spray down the insides of the oven with a cleaning solution, let it sit, and then get to work with a sponge and a scraper.
  • As for the microwave, you can use a bowl of vinegar, lemon and water, dish soap, or window cleaner. Just place it in the microwave, turn the microwave on for a few minutes, and then wipe it down with a rag. All that crusted gunk will come off easily, leaving your microwave looking like new.
  • Cleaning the kitchen sink, just for the record, can be found in the above bathroom section . Sinks are sinks, after all.

Step 5 Organize the cabinets.

  • Sometimes it's just easier to take everything back out and then put everything back in, rather than trying to work around everything and see what you can make work.
  • When everything is out, clean the cabinet inside. Wet or dry, or dry then wet then dry; just simply get the dirt out.
  • Put everything inside. Put your bowls with your bowls, your nice glasses with your nice glasses, your baking supplies with your baking supplies – you get the picture. Make sure what you use most is the most accessible, too.
  • If there are unnecessary things, then think where they should be placed. Throw whatever is very much not needed anymore to make things easier. Do not keep trashes but also, do not throw useful things.

Cleaning the Bedroom

Step 1 Organize all the clutter.

  • As you are cleaning, walk around the house with a garbage bag and a laundry bag. This way you can pick up as you go and won't have to walk back and forth.

Step 2 Make the bed...

  • Of course, you may want to wash the sheets and then make your bed. This includes pillowcases and the comforter, too. Jumping into a made bed at night feels great, but jumping into a made, clean bed feels even better.

Step 3 Organize your closet...

  • It’s not a bad idea to go through your closet and figure out what you just want to throw out (random, non-apparel items included). Odds are there are at least a few pieces or things you’re not interested anymore, and they’re just cluttering up your space. But don’t throw them out – they can probably be donated.

Marie Kondo

Learn to embrace minimalism. "Once you learn to choose your belongings properly, you will be left with only the amount that fits perfectly in the space you own."

Step 4 Dust, vacuum or mop, and spray a nice scent into the room.

  • Be gentle with certain pieces, like your lampshades and curtains. For these, you can take a blow dryer to them and gently blast away the dust.
  • When you're done, top off all your hard with a nice, fresh scent, like lemon or lavender.

Cleaning General Living Areas

Step 1 Clean the floor.

  • Vacuuming is the most effective way to clean up all the dust and other loose junk that accumulates on your floor when you have carpet (and it's practically a daily necessity when you have shedding pets).
  • Alternatively, try using a dry dust mop (the microfiber kind works well) if you have tile/wood floors. You can use a carpet sweeper (non-electric machine you push that has brushes underneath) if you have carpet. Both involve less fuss than getting out the vacuum and will let you go longer between vacuuming sessions, too.

Step 2 Mop your floor...

  • There are a vast number of options for rag mops. Rag mops with real fabric scrub better and last longer than mops with a sponge. [3] X Research source With a good rag mop, one thing is guaranteed: when you use a little elbow grease, your floors will look fantastic. Use hot water and the appropriate cleaner for your floor (again, read the labels).

Step 3 Fight against fleas, if you have pets.

  • To kill fleas without using poisons, after each vacuuming, sprinkle borax on your carpets and let it work its way into the carpet backing. You'll never have fleas in the house if you do this. You can find the Borax in the laundry detergent area of grocery stores, usually on the top shelf.

Step 4 Dust the furniture.

  • To dust your furniture, take a damp cloth or dusting mitt and carry it over your surfaces. Go in a continual motion on every surface so you don't miss any spots, and work in one direction around the room. You may want to use a scented furniture spray like Pledge to help you out.

Step 5 Polish the wood furniture.

  • Some furniture can handle water, and those that can should be used with the soapy solution from step two. Be sure to quickly dry off these surfaces.
  • Next, apply the suggested amount of furniture polish and wipe away according to the directions. This will keep dust from magnetizing to your furniture.

Step 6 Be careful using all-purpose cleaners.

  • As another general rule, do not mix cleaners. Doing so could be very dangerous. Use them one at a time and follow the directions on the label.

Step 7 Organize the knickknacks and fluff the pillows.

  • When you're all done, spray a room spray and sit down and marvel at your work. Did you miss anything? Oil the door hinges? Clean the walls? Replace the light bulbs?

Wrapping Up Your Cleaning Session

Step 1 Don’t forget to clean outside, too.

  • Don't have a rake or feel like doing the back-breaking work? A leaf blower can be used as a time saving method, too.
  • Trimming/pruning back plants (hedges, rose bushes, etc.) can help prevent water lines and dirt from getting on the walls of your home.

Step 2 Do the laundry...

  • First, begin the water at the needed temperature and level.
  • Next, pour in the needed amount of laundry detergent where the water is pouring.
  • If you use fabric softener, a great thing to use is the fabric softener balls that you pour your softener into and just throw in at the beginning. (This saves you from having to wait for the rinse cycle.) If you use one, do this with the detergent. If you put your clothes in first, you risk staining your clothes with the coloring in these liquids.

Step 3 Dry your laundry.

  • It also helps to empty the dryer while your clothes are still warm. Not to mention the awesome feeling you get from holding a pile of still warm, extra clean clothes.

Step 4 Walk through your house and complete any remaining room-specific cleaning necessary.

  • Emptying trash bins and taking out the trash
  • Cleaning the kitchen table
  • Changing bedsheets , pillowcases, and duvet covers
  • Cleaning walls
  • Clean the refrigerator

About This Article

Eduardo Peralta

To clean a house, you’ll need to tackle the kitchen, bathrooms, and living spaces. Try approaching the process from top-to-bottom. Work from upstairs to downstairs, and work top-down in each room as well, cleaning shelves and counters and other surfaces before the floors. You should clean one room at a time, or one type of room a day. To clean your house effectively and efficiently, learn some cleaning tips: Remove clutter from every room, especially if it is on the floor. Put away as many objects as possible, in closets, cabinets, or in drawers. If your storage spaces are overflowing, consider donating belongings or giving them away. Use storage containers to organize your countertops and drawers. Remove trash and replace trash bags. Having trash around a house may make it seem dirtier than it really is, even if its in a trash can. Clean each surface in every room. Remove everything from a surface before you wipe it with a wet cloth or duster. You can use store bought cleaners to clean, or you can make your own cleanser by mixing 3 parts water with 1 part vinegar. Remember to wear rubber gloves when working with liquid cleaners to protect your hands. Microfiber towels are also great on their own for wiping dusty surfaces. If you have carpet, vacuum after you clean surfaces so that you vacuum up dust that landed on the floor. If you have wood floors or tile, first vacuum and then mop to keep them clean. When cleaning a bathroom, spray toilet bowl cleanser under the rim of the toilet bowl, then scrub the sides of the toilet bowl with a toilet brush. Wipe down the remainder of the toilet's exterior surfaces with all-purpose cleaner and a rag or paper towels. If you use a rag on the toilet, don't clean other surfaces with it. Scrub the shower or tub with a soft brush or abrasive sponge, then use the shower head to rinse it thoroughly. If you start to feel overwhelmed, give yourself a goal for the day, and then finish cleaning the rest on another day. Cleaning a whole house is a big project, and it doesn't have to happen all at once. Did this summary help you? Yes No

Don't stress, here's how to clean your whole house

Sunday reset, done

Rainbow background with checklist graphic on top

Living room

Whether you’re hosting overnight guests, having a party, or just freshening up for the week ahead, knowing how to clean a house is a life skill that will serve you well. Even if you live in a small space, like an apartment or condo, learning how to clean efficiently and effectively can be tricky. I mean, you might not even have space in your rental to store cleaning supplies .

Even if you were raised to keep your room tidy, moving into a space that’s solely your own can create some relaxed (read: lazy) tendencies. Leaving dishes in the sink or neglecting that towering pile of laundry may seem like a luxury now that no one is on your case, but these habits can create a much bigger mess when it comes time to clean.

We hate to break it to you but the longer you leave your chores waiting to be taken care of, the worse the cleaning and organization process will be. This can leave you feeling overwhelmed and confused as to where to even start.

Whether you’ve dug yourself into a hole of cleaning chaos (or lack thereof) or you simply need a thorough checklist on how to clean a house, this guide will help. Clear some time in your schedule, turn on your favorite playlist, grab your supplies, and get ready for your place to look sparkling.

A few house cleaning must-haves

Before you jump into your cleaning checklists, you'll want to make sure you have some good cleaning supplies and tools on hand. I’ve listed a few key products below that you’ll need to get started.

Mrs Meyers cleaning spray in a white bottle with a green label

The perfect everyday spray, this cleaner is great for all around your home. Affordable, well-scented, and cruelty-free, it's an essential for your cleaning caddy. The spray is a golden pick because it's made with plant-derived ingredients and avoids artificial colors, parabens, and glycol solvents. Well-scented and thoughtfully made, what could be better to spritz your home with?

The Swiffer 2-in-1 mop with a green head and box

Don’t be fooled by the budget-friendly price tag of this simple dry and wet mop. While it’s not electric, it’s the perfect manual cleaning tool for small apartments and dorms and is backed by our editor-in-chief and 50,000 five-star reviews. Swiffer has set up a recycling program for the pads. And you can even buy ones for wooden floors or pet owners. We also love the Swiffer PowerMop , which is one of the cleaning products from Amazon pros love .

A pack of colorful Spontex microfiber cloths

These microfiber cloths are my fave to use. The cute colors just make me so happy and put me in a good cleaning mood. They're super soft, don't leave stray fibers, and are easy to wash. I'm a fan of the classic rainbow set, but it's worth having a peep on Amazon to see if any patterns match your aesthetic. Because I know that's important, people.

Scrub Daddy Damp Duster

TikToker Vanesa Amaro introduced us to the Scrub Daddy Damp Duster and it's a true game-changer. You can use it to clean and dust anywhere from shelves to baseboards to blinds, only using the tool and water. This rippled sponge also manages to catch pet hair at the same time. Magic!

Method bathroom cleaner, blue solution in clear spray bottle

One of our staff writers swears by the Method eucalyptus and mint bathroom cleaner for cleaning her sink, shower, and bathroom surfaces. She says it leaves them feeling super fresh and pristine. The smell is beyond invigorating, and the spray itself is perfect for daily maintenance. She says to spray and let it sit for about 10 minutes before wiping your surfaces down. It dissolves soap scum and better yet, it works on mold and mildew.

An Oxo good grips extendable duster with a red fluffy head

You get a hand duster and an extendable duster in this set. The fluffy head quickly traps dirt and chemicals, so you won't be flinging dust around your bedroom. It also extends up to 53 inches, so you won't have to stretch or wobble on a chair while cleaning.

Your go-to house cleaning checklist

These daily, weekly, and monthly checklists are going to make your house look so clean. Screenshot or bookmark them so you can keep tabs on each room around your living space.

Our bedrooms provide a dedicated space for us to relax and catch some z’s each night, but they're often the first room to take the brunt of our sloppiness. You might think of bedroom clutter as  “out of sight, out of mind” but having an unorganized bedroom can make the space feel less zen and more stressful. There’s something to be said about walking into a clutter free, calming room before your head hits the pillow. Here’s how to keep it that way.

  • Tidy up any clutter
  • Place clothing in laundry basket
  • Launder bed sheets
  • Dust furniture
  • Clean mirrors
  • Clean baseboards and moldings
  • Dust light fixtures and ceiling fans
  • Disinfect light switches and door knobs
  • Clean window tracks and screens

Perhaps the most dreaded room in the house to tidy up, the bathroom is a stomping ground for germs to accumulate if you don’t stay on top of cleaning. On the bright side, it’s also one of the smallest rooms in most apartments, meaning you don’t have to dedicate an entire afternoon to make some headway. Here’s what to clean on the regular.

  • Wipe down countertops
  • Wipe down sink
  • Organize and put away any products used
  • Take out garbage
  • Clean and disinfect toilet
  • Launder bathroom towels
  • Disinfect countertops and sinks
  • Vacuum or mop floor
  • Launder bathroom rugs
  • Scrub shower and/or bathtub
  • Launder shower curtain

You don’t have to be a Michelin star chef to know that the kitchen can be prone to a wildly complex mess. Even if you aren’t cooking every day (here’s to looking at you, takeout) there are still tasks you have to stay on top of. Kitchen counters can get cluttered with everyday items like purses and laptops, the sink can become a breeding ground for bacteria, and the fridge can house expired groceries. Add these to-do’s to your list to keep things in order.

  • Wipe down countertops and sink
  • Run garbage disposal
  • Load and unload the dishwasher
  • Hand wash any necessary dishes
  • Wipe fronts of appliances
  • Wipe stovetop, if used that day
  • Disinfect your faucet and light switches
  • Pick up any clutter that accumulated throughout the day
  • Take out trash and recycling
  • Disinfect fridge and freezer handles
  • Disinfect your sink
  • Remove anything expired from your fridge
  • Clean the inside of your microwave
  • Vacuum or mop floors
  • Launder dish towels
  • Clean baseboards
  • Clean the oven and any other appliances necessary
  • Clean your dishwasher, including the filter
  • Run the clean cycle on your coffee machine or clean it with vinegar
  • Clean stove top burners
  • Scrub backsplash
  • Launder kitchen runners or rugs
  • Dust light fixtures
  • Dust the top of your fridge and cabinets
  • Remove anything expired from your freezer or pantry
  • Disinfect trash and recycling bins
  • Clean the inside of cabinets and drawers

At the end of a long day, the living room is always there to greet you with a soft couch, cozy blanket, and the TV for your binge-watching pleasure. However, when the space is messy it can make it hard to truly unwind. While dusting and vacuuming may be necessary for a deep clean, there are plenty of little tasks that can make a big impact in the overall appearance of this space.

  • Fluff couch cushions and pillows
  • Fold and put away throw blankets
  • Organize TV remotes
  • Clean between couch cushions
  • Launder any throw blankets
  • Dust baseboards and moldings
  • Clean fireplace
  • Clean window tracks and screen

If you’re lucky enough to work from home (and have a dedicated office at that) then you know it’s crucial for your productivity to keep this room spic and span. Keep your desk clear and your notes in order by following these office cleaning tasks.

  • Organize any notes/files used
  • Wipe down desk surface
  • Wipe down your laptop/computer keyboard
  • Take out trash

A clean home can lead to a clearer mind and make you more efficient. When you know how to clean your home and keep the space organized and clutter-free, you'll find it easier to focus on other essential tasks. Maintaining a clean and dust-free home can also help keep allergens, germs, and pollutants at bay, which is beneficial for the health and overall well-being of every member of your household — humans and pets .

While it's been established that a clean home is better for you, cleaning a house from top to bottom is no easy feat. It can be very overwhelming, even if you have a small space or if your home is well organized already. Whether it's deep cleaning and organizing the bathroom , decluttering the garage , or sprucing up the kids' spaces , there isn't always a lot of free time to devote to the project. So, we sought expert advice to uncover easy cleaning tips and hacks to make cleaning house a quicker and more efficient process.

House cleaning methods

There are several approaches to cleaning your house. Your choice of approach will of course depend on your personal preferences, available time, lifestyle, and your home's specific needs. For instance, a family of four will need a different approach than a single person. You may be looking to maintain a clean home versus give it a big overhaul. You may even want to combine some of these approaches to create the method that suits you best.

how to clean your home gather cleaning supplies

Daily Cleaning Routine: This approach involves performing small cleaning tasks on a daily basis to maintain a tidy and organized home. Daily tasks may include making beds, doing dishes, wiping down kitchen counters, and picking up clutter.

Weekly Cleaning Routine : A weekly cleaning routine involves setting aside specific days or time each week to perform deeper cleaning tasks. This includes vacuuming, mopping floors, dusting, cleaning bathrooms, and changing bed linens.

Zone Cleaning : Zone cleaning breaks your home into different zones or areas, and you focus on one zone at a time during your cleaning sessions. For example, you might designate Mondays for cleaning the kitchen, Tuesdays for the living room, and so on. This approach ensures that each area receives thorough attention. “The best way to effectively clean your home is to pick a room for different days of the week," says Karen Lee, household organization and cleaning expert and founder of Smart Robotic Home . "If you plan an entire day around cleaning your whole house, it can become too overwhelming and you can miss important areas to clean."

FlyLady Cleaning Method : The FlyLady cleaning method emphasizes establishing routines and breaking cleaning tasks into smaller, more manageable steps. It promotes the use of a timer to clean for a set period and then take short breaks.

Seasonal Cleaning : Seasonal cleaning involves deep cleaning and organizing your home at specific times of the year, such as spring cleaning or fall cleaning. This approach often includes tasks like washing windows, cleaning carpets, and decluttering.

Minimalist Cleaning : Minimalist cleaning focuses on decluttering and simplifying your home to make cleaning easier and more efficient. It involves reducing possessions and maintaining a minimalist living space.

Speed Cleaning : Speed cleaning is all about completing cleaning tasks as quickly and efficiently as possible. It often involves using cleaning checklists, optimizing cleaning tools, and minimizing distractions to save time.

The KonMari Method : Developed by Marie Kondo, the KonMari method involves decluttering and organizing your belongings based on whether they "spark joy." It's a comprehensive approach to tidying up and involves discarding items that no longer bring happiness.

Total Clean Method : Roman Peysakhovich, CEO of national cleaning company Onedesk , explains this method as cleaning the entire house with every cleaning session — not just one room at a time. “House cleaning is much more efficient if you pick one task, such as dusting, mopping, or vacuuming, and do the same task in every room of the house,” he says. “Focusing on one task will save you hours of time in the long run and it'll help you avoid starting the same task over and over again.”

Chore Charts and Rotating Tasks : Creating chore charts and assigning cleaning tasks to family members can help distribute the cleaning workload and ensure that everyone contributes to maintaining a clean home.

Regardless of which cleaning method you choose, the key is to maintain a clean and organized living space that contributes to your overall well-being.

How to clean your house, according to experts

While there's no right or wrong way to clean, there are ways to make the cleaning process more efficient. Ahead, you'll find expert cleaning tips, clever cleaning product recommendations, and more of the best advice straight from the pros.

Start by Decluttering

Before you dust, wipe, and scrub, declutter your living space to give yourself a less overwhelming situation to deal with. A tidy space will make the cleaning process faster and more manageable.

"Pick up, and put away everything [that] has gathered on the floor," says Sharon Lowenheim, MBA, MSE, certified professional organizer, and founder of Organizing Goddess . "Then, do the same with all the surfaces."

Kate Pawlowski, founding partner of Done & Done Home , echoes Lowenheim's sentiment, adding that what makes cleaning so difficult for some people is that they have too much lying around the house. "We always suggest that doing a big declutter will make cleaning so much faster since everything is put away in its home," says Pawlowski.

Gather Your Supplies

Create a designated cleaning station with all your cleaning supplies and products in one place. This ensures that you have everything you need within easy reach while cleaning.

Devote one bucket or caddy to carry around the house with you while you clean, suggests Wendy Silberstein, professional organizer and founder of The Aesthetic Organizer . Then, "create a master schedule and commit."

Establish a Cleaning Schedule

Divide your cleaning tasks into daily, weekly, and monthly lists. This structured approach ensures that you maintain a consistently clean home without feeling overwhelmed.

Having a schedule and cleaning cadence can give your home the focus it deserves, while also keeping your mind in check. There's no sense in cleaning the same space over and over again if you're neglecting other parts of your home.

"You'll never have to spend hours (or days) doing an entire-home deep clean again," says Jamie Hord, founder of Horderly Professional Organizing . Hord recommends wiping down and disinfecting all high-traffic areas daily — doorknobs, countertops, kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry rooms , just to name a few.

"On a weekly basis, wash sheets and towels, vacuum and mop floors, dust surfaces and furniture, and clean your showers and bathtubs," she adds.

As for monthly tasks, Hord suggests taking inventory of the food in your kitchen , cleaning supplies, and toiletries to make sure they're not expired or running low.

Clean With the Right Focus

"You can either clean your kitchen in four hours, or clean your entire house top to bottom in four hours," says Lisa Romero, owner of Just Like New Cleaning in Fort Collins, Colorado. "A lot of people get caught focusing on one area — say, doing a super job cleaning the counters — and never get to the stove, let alone the next room. In reality, just wiping things down and moving on is quick and efficient."

Be task-oriented. Focus on completing one chore, such as dusting, throughout the entire house before starting the next activity.

Work Smarter, Not Harder

Consider using time-saving tools and products to make cleaning more efficient.

Sara San Angelo, professional house cleaner and blogger at Confessions of a Cleaning Lady , has a great motto for cleaning: "Work smarter not harder." One of the tools that helps her work smarter: a cordless electric spin scrubber with extendable arm . “You can clean your whole bathroom with it with minimal effort,” she says.

“With the extendable arm, you don't have to bend over to clean large tubs or showers. Cleaning grout lines on the floor is a breeze.” San Angelo even dusts baseboards with it using a dry scrubber head.

Dust With Precision

Peysakhovich loves the Scrub Daddy Damp Duster for dusting most surfaces in your home. “The ridged edges of this easy-to-use duster trap even the smallest dust bunnies,” he explains. “This duster is built to last, and makes dusting your home easier.”

Tackle Grout Cleaning

For tough grout cleaning, consider the right tools.

Residential real estate developer and general contractor Bill Samuel has innovated grout cleaning as he rehabs houses for reselling and renting. “When it comes to cleaning bathroom and kitchen tiles, we have found that any basic cleaning solution and some elbow grease will get the job done in almost every case. However, getting stains out of the grout between the tiles is much more difficult and so we discovered an effective method for cleaning tile grout,” he explains. “First you should purchase a product specifically designed for cleaning grout, so check out the reviews of any retailer to find the right product for the job.”

But here’s where the innovation comes in: Samuel uses a drill bit brush for the motorized scrubbing action. He specifically uses this Holikme Drill Brush Power Scrubber . Simply attach it to your drill and scrub grime away.

Show Some Love to Your Toilet

Doyle James, president of Mr. Rooter Plumbing , a Neighborly company, explains how to care for your potty: “For a squeaky clean toilet, mix 1 cup of baking soda with 15 drops of tea tree essential oil and 15 drops of lemon or orange essential oil . Let the mixture sit in the bowl for 30 minutes and scrub with a bowl brush before flushing.”

Give Attention to Appliances

Regularly clean your dishwasher to prevent mold growth.

According to Ron Shimek, president of Mr. Appliance , “The dishwasher is one of the biggest culprits for potential mold growth,” he says. "Its warm and damp environment is heaven for mold spores — especially if there’s food particles left behind from your last cycle."

To clean it, Shimek advises regularly running an empty dry-heat cycle to flush out the interior, including the silverware basket, filter, panels, and door gasket. “To keep this appliance germ-free, you can clean the affected areas with diluted bleach and if there’s mold in the silverware basket, let it soak in your kitchen sink with diluted bleach and warm water for 30 minutes,” he adds. “Be sure to rinse thoroughly before placing back into the dishwasher.”

Don't Forget Your Drains

Routinely clean your drains with a combination of baking soda and vinegar, followed by hot water, to prevent clogs.

Jake Romano, who works for Ottawa Drain Cleaners , says a routine drain cleaning that you can do yourself can save you hundreds of dollars on plumbing services in the long run.

“Every month or two, simply pour half a cup of baking soda into the drain, followed by half a cup of white vinegar,” he explains. “Let it fizzle and react for about half an hour before flushing it down with hot water.” Romano says that doing this will eat away at the grease and grime building in the drains, which lead to stubborn clogs.

He also suggests using products like drain enzyme cleaners regularly. “These cleaners are safe for the environment,” he adds. “They usually include enzymes and bacteria that will slowly devour the particle buildup in your drains. It can help with your entire plumbing system, even into your sewer.”

Invest in the Right Tools and Cleaning Products

Lee says to arm yourself if you want to clean effectively. "You should invest in multiple-sized cleaning brushes to help get into small nooks and crannies," she advises.

Lee also suggests using all-purpose cleaners . "[They are] great to have as opposed to having many different chemicals under your sink which can lead to clutter," she points out. "Adding in vinegar and baking soda to your cleaning products is helpful as well as these products can be used all over your home from the bathroom, to your laundry room to your bedroom and kitchen."

Clean Your Cleaning Tools

"You should also make sure to disinfect these brushes and other cleaning appliances each week to ensure you are not spreading around bacteria," says Lee. Ensure that your cleaning tools are clean before you start using them. This will make the cleaning process more efficient and effective.

As Peysakhovich points out, “You'll end up spending more time trying to clean if you don't clean your tools beforehand.”

Start at the Top, Then Go Step-by-Step

The expert recommended plan of attack? Top-to-bottom, left-to-right. "I always start [in the upstairs bathroom]," Romero says. "It's a good place to leave supplies." For each task, start at the highest point in the room (if dusting, this might mean high shelves), and move from left to right across the room. This way, you don't miss anything, and you won't accidentally knock dust onto already-cleaned lower shelves.

Step 1: Dust

Dust each room, including the topsides of all the furniture, undersides of shelves, and all handrails, as well as picture frames, TV screens, and knickknacks. "When it's possible to dry-dust, I do — getting something wet makes it harder," Romero says. To get rid of fingerprints, dampen a microfiber cloth with warm water.

Pro cleaning tip: Look up top. "People don't dust up on the very top of furniture, and that's where all the dust collects and then falls off," Romero says.

Step 2: Clean furniture fabric

Go through the house and strip and remake beds. Tidy up pillows or furniture blankets. Brush furniture surfaces with a vacuum extension as needed.

Step 3: Clean mirrors and glass

Easy to forget, but important to clean, wipe down mirrors and windows throughout the house. If possible, do the outside too!

Pro cleaning tip: Using one wet and one dry microfiber cloth won't leave streaks.

Step 4: Disinfect counters and surfaces

Wipe down all surfaces and counters throughout the house, disinfecting every step of the way.

Pro cleaning tip: Be sure to wipe down all places that fingers touch, like door handles, light switches, TV remotes and phones. Those are the places that people forget, and they really hold germs.

Step 5: Spray bathrooms and kitchen

Walk through the bathrooms and spray cleaner on tubs, sinks, and toilets. Return and scrub. Then, in the kitchen, wipe down the inside of the microwave, and cabinet and appliance doors.

Step 6: Sweep and mop

Sweep, then mop or scrub the bathroom and kitchen floors, and any other floor that needs it. You may want to vacuum first if you have lots of bits that you don't want to get caught on your mop.

Pro cleaning tip: "I always do bathroom floors on my hands and knees with a microfiber cloth and cleanser. That's how I know that I got every corner, even behind toilets, and that they're 100% disinfected," Romero says.

Step 7: Vacuum

"I vacuum my way out the bedrooms, down the stairs, through the living room and out of the house," Romero says.

Pro cleaning tip: It's not crucial to vacuum every single inch. Just keep moving. You'll get the spots you missed next week.

Cleanliness refers to the art of keeping our body, mind, house, work area and our surroundings clean. We can divide cleanliness into various types such as cleaning clothes, cleaning streets, clean surroundings, clean homes and personal cleanliness. We should make cleanliness our habit because cleaning of our body is important for good physical and mental health. Cleanliness of our surroundings and environment is essential for social and intellectual health. We should never compromise with cleanliness. Parents and teachers must encourage children to adopt the habit of cleanliness and make this a part of our lives.

Cleanliness is not other’s responsibility. It is our own responsibility. It is very important to have a healthy living so basic cleanliness is significant in life. It is as essential as we need food, water and clothes to live. Absence of cleanliness leads to various types of diseases, illness and breeding places for flies, mosquitoes and cockroaches.

Basic cleanliness starts from our own personal cleanliness and hygiene. To start with, we must wash hands regularly. Washing hands keeps germs and bacteria away. So, it is very important to wash hands before eating a meal. When we come back home from outside, the first thing we should do is wash hands to clean all dirt and germs. Every day we should take a bath and wear clean clothes. Clothes should be washed daily. After using the toilet, we must always wash hands with soap. We must cut or trim nails regularly. Cutting nails is essential for personal hygiene. If we don’t cut or trim nails regularly, then there is a high possibility for the dirt and germs to enter our body. In addition, brushing and flossing twice daily are also important for oral hygiene.

We must keep our homes clean all time. We should ensure that dusting, sweeping and mopping are done daily. Instead of littering our house with papers and wrappers, we must inculcate the habit of throwing them in wastebaskets. We should clean our bathrooms daily.  Our kitchen, where food is being cooked and stored should be cleaned and hygiene must be maintained. We must cover food all times so that flies and other insects don’t get into them. Utensils should be covered while cooking. After cooking and eating, dishes, spoons, glasses and other vessels should be thoroughly cleaned with hot water and soap. We should wash raw vegetables and fruits before consuming. We must eat fresh and hygienic food and avoid eating outside. If we leave food items out for a long time then there could be a growth of bacteria and viruses so refrigeration or other ways of storing food items is important. The source of drinking water should be proper. Drinking water should be either boiled or filtered through modern UV technology. Pest control and sanitization should be done periodically at homes to keep away cockroaches and flies.

We must realize that keeping our surroundings and environment clean is as important as keeping our homes clean. It is the responsibility of every individual to keep the public places clean. One important way to keep the public places clean is to stop littering roads and streets. People should be educated not to spit and urinate in public. Proper toilets should be built in public places to avoid this. Proper sanitization of the drain pipes should be done. Everyone is responsible for the country’s environment. Cleaning the environment plays an important role in the development of a country. Cleaning our surroundings encourages people to do better work because it helps to reduce stress and focus well on work. It also provides employment to many people and thus reduces poverty.

Our Prime Minister, Sri. Narendra Modi has launched the campaign of ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’ to promote cleanliness of our environment. We should support this initiative started by our government for a better and clean country. There is a proverb saying, “Cleanliness is next to Godliness” which explains maintaining clean surrounding results in a fresh mind and body, which leads to a successful life. Cleanliness helps in bringing spirituality and concentration. Cleanliness is the responsibility of every citizen for a peaceful and healthy living.

How to Quickly Clean Your House When it’s a Disgusting Mess

No matter how clean my house gets, it’s hard to get too comfortable. Because with 4 young kids, it doesn’t take much for my house to become a disgusting mess.

After a few overwhelming days, my once sparkling clean house can look like it was ransacked by burglars. Burglars who dirtied the laundry, wrote on my walls, raided my fridge and pantry, and left every surface of my home sticky and covered in food.

Because when you have kids, it doesn’t take much for a messy house to feel so overwhelming that you don’t know where to start.

It could be work stress, mental health issues, a new baby, sickness, the kids being on a school break, or just life simply getting crazy stressful.

The reality is that when the going gets tough, for most of us the first thing we let slide is our house.

And I’m here to tell you that it’s okay.

You’re not a failure because your house is cluttered and messy. You’re normal.  Beyond  normal.

(so no beating yourself up, okay?)

my house is a disgusting mess - cleaning checklist

But you’re ready to conquer your messy home. You’re ready to see gleaming kitchen counters and vacuum lines in the carpet.

And most of all, you’re ready to feel some peace within in the walls of your home. Because while messes are unavoidable in the day-to-day of life, they can sure make it hard to relax and actually enjoy the things that matter most.

In this guide, we’re going to get you there. You’re going to learn:

  • How to get started even when the mess is overwhelming
  • Step-by-step guide to clean a messy house in just one day
  • How to build a daily routine that will make it easy to keep a clean home

Plus, I also created a free printable house cleaning checklist that follows these exact steps. After you read this guide, you can print it out and get started on the path to a tidy home.

A note before we dive in: Your goal right now is to tackle as much as you possibly can today and then set up a plan to tackle the rest. Therefore your main focus today is MOMENTUM.

Do not let yourself get buried in any one task. The most important thing you can do is just keep moving onto the next task.

(As a person with some raging ADHD, I know just how easy that is)

Instead, your goal is to move as quickly as you can through the steps and then once your messy house is suddenly feeling a million times better, you can deal with the nitty-gritty.

Remember, done is better than perfect.

That said, let’s get started!

BEFORE YOU TACKLE YOUR MESSY HOME

Before you tackle your messy home, your first step is to actually get yourself set up to be able to clean. Here are my suggestions:

Occupy Your Kids : If you have small children at home, this is the ideal time to allow some guilt-free screen time. Stick on a movie or let them use the iPad/tablet.

Put on some energizing music: At least if this is something that will help get you pumped up and moving quickly. While I love listening to podcasts & audiobooks, when it comes to cleaning quickly upbeat music is your best bet. You don’t want anything that will distract your brain from the task at hand. Remember, your goal is to move quickly from one thing to the next.

Open the windows (if weather permits) : This allows nice air to filter through your home and bring in some freshness.

Enlist help: If you have kids old enough to help, or family members around who will help without complaining (you don’t need that right now), get them to help you. I find that I can get my kids pumped up to clean when I ask them how good it would feel to have a clean & today home.

Grab a caffeinated beverage. Not only does caffeine give you energy (hurrah!), but it also helps you think better. This is going to be helpful for making choices as you go through the house.

Get a bin or a bag to put any items that need to get moved to another area of the house. I use  a laundry tote like this . This will be especially helpful once you get to step 6.

Gather cleaning supplies. I recommend:

  • Vacuum cleaner with tube attachment (if you have it)
  • Cleaning Cloth & all purpose spray or Clorox wipes
  • Bathroom cleaner
  • Toilet cleaner
  • Mirror cleaner

Now you’re ready to take a deep breath and dive into the steps of cleaning your messy house in just one day.

clean house in a day checklist

HOW TO CLEAN A MESSY HOUSE IN ONE DAY

When your house is a disaster, it can be downright paralyzing. It’s like everything is engulfed in flames and you’re there holding a spray bottle wondering where to aim the nozzle.

So what do you clean first in a messy house? Where do you aim your metaphorical spray bottle?

While this can feel like a daunting task, we’re going to break it down step by step so you can quickly and efficiently transform your dirty house into a tidy paradise.

Following these steps is the best way to put your hard work to best use by completing each task in as little time as possible.

1. THROW AWAY TRASH

(15-20 minutes)

Your first step is tackle the obvious trash around your house. Grab a giant trash bag and then go room-to-room through your house throwing away absolutely everything that can be thrown away immediately.

Your focus is singular: throw away anything you can without much thought.

This includes:

  • Obvious trash items
  • Small crappy toys your kids just leave around everywhere (e.g. fast food kid’s meal toys)

Once the bag is full, throw it in the outside trash and grab another bag. Repeat until done. This shouldn’t take more than 15-20 minutes. A few minutes in each room should do it.

Remember, this isn’t deciding whether to keep or purge any significant items. It’s throwing away trash and trash-like items around your house (broken crayons, conference sway, hotel note pads etc.).

If you have to think about it, just leave it for now.

And don’t worry about recycling or donating anything at this point. While I’m 100% all about recycling and being environmentally conscious, when you feel like you’re drowning, it’s about getting your head above the surface so you can actually breath.

You’ll recycle like a champ once you can breathe freely in your house. Right now it’s about relieving the stress that’s gnawing at you.

Once you’ve picked up all the trash, move onto…

cleaning the kitchen

2. THE KITCHEN

(1 hour or less)

Oh the kitchen. No room in the house can go from pristine to looking like a Hoarders episode faster than a family kitchen.

But you’re not going to do a deep cleaning of the kitchen. Not right now. Your main goal in the kitchen is to get it clean enough to be hygienic and functional. Clean enough to not feel depressed every time you look at it.

To clean your kitchen:

  • Go room-to-room and gather dirty dishes from anywhere in the house
  • Throw away anything too overwhelming (if you are completely overwhelmed, this may be what you need to stay sane)
  • Unload clean dishes from dishwasher (if there are any)
  • Rinse and load dishes in dishwasher
  • Start dishwasher
  • Papers (you’ll tackle this in a later step)
  • Things to move to other rooms in the house (put in bin or bag)
  • Wipe down surfaces. If you have a lot of crumbs, you may run a hand vac over the surfaces or use a hand broom to sweep up the mess before wiping own with a wet rag. Whatever is fastest and easiest for you.
  • Wash any hand dishes and set out to dry (optional)
  • Vacuum or sweep floors (no mopping yet, but you can spot mop anything truly hideous if it makes you feel better)

It might be tempting to buckle down into some nitty gritty cleaning. Like clearing out the junk drawer or cleaning out your fridge. DON’T DO IT.

Your house is like a person passed out and bleeding on the sidewalk. Let’s stop the bleeding and get her conscious before we paint her toenails.

(However, if you wish you can take 3 or so minutes to very quickly go through the fridge and throw away any spoiled or expired food.)

Once your dishes are clean, surfaces are wiped down, and floors are swept, you can then move on to…

3. THE LAUNDRY

(30 minutes)

Dirty laundry has ninja-like qualities when it comes to suddenly overwhelming you.

One minute, you think you’re okay. And then suddenly you’re being attacked by growing piles and overflowing laundry hampers. And everyone’s forced to wear their swimsuits because there’s no clean underwear in the house.

Or maybe that’s just me.

But regardless, we’re now going to conquer the piles of dirty clothes and laundry from around your house.

Here’s what you’ll do to tackle the laundry today:

  • Go room to room through the house and gather every piece of dirty laundry in the house . Don’t forget towels. And maybe bathroom rugs if they’re looking super rough.
  • Divide into various piles . I like to divide laundry into  these popup laundry baskets  since they collapse flat and store easily, and keep my piles compact and organized.
  • Throw the first load into your washing machine (I like to start with the pile with the most underwear in it…)
  • If you have any piles of clean laundry sitting around, fold and put it away – OR – simply divide it out and stuff it in drawers to deal with later. (Personally, I never fold my kids’ clothes since I’ve found it a waste of time and energy.)

Once you’ve got the laundry rolling along, you can then move onto the next step. But keep an eye on the laundry as you tackle other parts of your house.

You’ll want to take a minute here and there to move the washed laundry into the dryer and then put a new load into the washer. You’ll deal with the folding and putting away later.

And stay tuned at the end of the post for  how to quickly and easily stay up on laundry  from here on out.

4. PAPER CLUTTER

It’s now time to tackle all the obnoxious paper clutter from around your house. Here’s what you’ll do

  • First, gather ALL paper clutter, bills, etc. from around you house. You may have already started a pile in earlier steps.
  • Separate into 3 piles: Deal with immediately (ex. bills), deal with later, and trash.
  • Put the “deal with later” pile away. This way, if you’re looking for a paper, you’ll know where to find it. You can chip away at this in the coming weeks. In the meantime, make sure any incoming papers get added to this pile.
  • Pay any outstanding bills.
  • Go through the “deal with immediately” pile and do whatever you need to do to knock those things off your plate. If something is going to take a bunch of time and it can wait a few days, put an alert in your phone to deal with it in 2 days and set it aside (like on the fridge or a bulletin board).

Remember, your goal is to keep the momentum going and tackle as much as you can right now.

So with the papers now taken care of, it’s time to move to…

5. MEAL PLANNING /PLAN GROCERY SHOPPING

Your home is already looking and feeling so much better by this point. It’s now time to buy yourself some time and headspace by getting all your meals for the next week figured out .

You’ll also create your shopping list so that you know exactly what you need to feed your family for this next week.

Here’s what you’re going to do:

  • Figure out dinner tonight. Make it something SUPER easy with ingredients you have already. In fact, I highly recommend just grabbing take-out (or ordering pizza delivery) so that you don’t have another mess to clean and you don’t actually have to take time to make anything.
  • Plan out simple meals for the next week. I’m sure you want to feed your kids nutritious, organic, homemade foods for every meal and snack. But this week, let’s just make it easy. Once we’ve got room to breathe, you can plan some fancier grub. For the next week, let’s just make it as simple and convenient as possible. Here’s som e awesome free printable meal planners to get started .
  • cereal for breakfast
  • pita chips, humus, carrot sticks
  • frozen pizza
  • dinner recipes under 30 minutes
  • easy slow cooker meals
  • With menu planned, make your grocery list . To simplify life and cut down on future messes, I recommend to adding paper plates and bowls to the shopping list.
  • Block out time in the next couple days to do the shopping.

Optional: If you have the service locally, I highly recommend doing either grocery delivery or grocery pickup . This will save a ton of time and stress.

And frankly, your sanity is worth a few bucks. I personally love Walmart grocery pickup —it’s free and saves so much time. And you get $10 off your first order!

6. ROOM-TO-ROOM PICKUP

(45 minutes)

Now it’s time to start tackling the individual rooms of your house. This is where it may be easy to sucked into some nitty-gritty organizing, but fight the urge. Be strong!

Your goal here is to just get each room picked up and quickly wipe down surfaces. Since you’ve already picked up trash, dishes, and laundry messes from each room, it shouldn’t take long.

Your goal here is to just get each room picked up and quickly wipe down flat surfaces. Since you’ve already picked up trash, dishes, and laundry messes from each room, it shouldn’t take long.

In fact, it should just take about 10-15 minutes max for each room. To keep things moving, set a timer each time you start on a room!

My house is a mess where do I start

To clean each room:

  • Pick up any out of place items and quickly put them away. This means all toys into one bin, like items into one drawer etc. If clean clothes are scattered, just make sure they get stuck in the right drawer. Don’t worry about folding or deep organizing yet.
  • Stick anything that needs to move to another place in the house in your bag or bin set aside for that purpose. As your work through rooms,  you can put things in the correct place if it’s not too much trouble. Otherwise, you can tackle that bin later.
  • Clear surfaces.
  • Wipe down any surfaces . I like to either use Clorox Wipes or a rag/paper towel and Mrs. Meyer’s all-purpose cleaner (it makes everything smell fresh)
  • Move to next room and repeat until each room is picked up.

QUICK TIP: You may consider keeping a bin in each room for items that need to be put away. That way the room can get picked up and tidy, and all those items can get put away later. Ideally, by the person responsible for that item.

Once everything is picked up and floors are clear, you’re ready to get those floors sparkling.

At this point, your house is really starting to come together. Your house is basically all pickup up and it’s time to get those floors nice and clean.

For me, walking around my house and feeling clean floors beneath my bare feet is one of the best feelings in the world. And you’re almost there!

Here’s what you’ll do to clean your floors:

  • Sweep or vacuum any hard flooring . If they’re quite dirty, do it twice. Loose dirt on hard flooring tends to quickly soil any nearby carpet. Don’t worry about the bathroom floors right now. We’ll get there next.
  • Once the hard surfaces are clean, vacuum the carpet and rugs . If you have a hose attachment that’s really easy to use (like my vacuum ), suck up the grime in the corners, otherwise, don’t worry about it quite yet.
  • Mop hard flooring . With tile, I love the Swifter Wet Jet , and with my wood floors, I use this cleaner  and this mop .

Can you feel the weight lifting? Can you breath easier and relax more? You should because your home is really looking awesome!

If you’re totally pooped out at this point, skip the next step and move to step 9 . Then make a plan to tackle the next step—your bathrooms—first thing tomorrow morning.

But if you’ve still got a little bit left in you (come on, you’re almost there!) and you’re ready to get your entire house clean and organized in one day, then let’s move on!

8. BATHROOMS

You’ve got one big task left: the bathrooms. To tackle your bathrooms quickly, you’re going clean them all at the same time. Or if that sound crazy, just follow the steps below for each bathroom.

Don’t worry about cleaning out cabinets or closets—just get the bathroom clean and hygienic.

Here’s what you’ll to clean your bathrooms :

bathroom cleaning kit for kids with printable checklist

  • All-purpose bathroom cleaner for sink
  • Tub/shower cleaner (I personally love Kaboom because I can just spray, let is sit for a few minutes, and quickly wipe down and it looks pretty dang good)
  • Rag and/or scrub brush
  • Toilet cleaning liquid
  • Toilet scrub brush
  • Paper towels and window cleaner for mirrors
  • Clear off all surfaces in each bathroom . Make sure sink and tub/shower are ready to be cleaned.
  • Spray down tub/shower in each bathroom . Let the cleaner sit for the time being and move to next steps.
  • Spray down sink with cleaner and wipe down . Moving from bathroom to bathroom, spray each sink with cleaner. Then go back through wiping them down.
  • With a rag or scrub brush, go through each bathroom and wipe down the tub/shower .
  • With toilet cleaning liquid in hand, squirt liquid into the toilet and then scrub with toilet brush . Do not flush and let it sit until you’ve finished the other toilets. Move to next bathroom and clean toilet bowl.
  • Rinse out toilet brush and put away.
  • Then go through and flush each toilet .
  • With bathroom cleaner and a rag (or Clorox wipes), wipe down the outside of the bowl and the toilet seat . Repeat for each toilet.
  • Sweep and mop floors.
  • Clean mirrors.
  • Put back any items that belong in shower or sink .
  • Put away all cleaning supplies
  • Once your laundry load of towels is done, hang clean towels in each bathroom . Or if you have a supply of clean towels in your linen closet, grab those.

Ta-da! The bathrooms are all clean. All ready for your kids to destroy. Just kidding (kind of).

9. FEBREEZE (Optional)

(5 minutes)

If you don’t have Febreeze , just skip this step and be sure and put it on your shopping list. Because Febreeze is a downright MIRACLE. It actually neutralizes bad smells. It doesn’t cover them up—it gets rid of them.

Yeah science!!!

And it will make your clean house smell and feel about 2x cleaner.

So if you have a bottle handy, take a few minutes and walk through your house and spray Febreeze on your couches, beds and carpet.

HOW TO MAINTAIN A CLEAN HOUSE WITH A SIMPLE CLEANING ROUTINE

Now that your house is clean, you want to keep it that way. And you want to put a plan in place to tackle the little organization projects you’ve got around your house.

To do that, you need to create a simple cleaning schedule so in a week’s time, you’re cleaning all the areas of your house. It doesn’t have to be complicated or take much time.

The key is really to do a little every single day .

If you’re not sure where to start, here’s a simple cleaning schedule that will keep your house clean in minutes a day.

To keep your house clean, you will want to:

  • Block out time daily for cleaning /organizing tasks. I block out a few minutes every morning and evening.
  • Follow a cleaning schedule . Create your own, download the one above, or find another online that you like!
  • Every evening you start the dishwasher and every morning it gets unloaded. (This keeps kitchen mess so much more manageable.)
  • Every evening, you set a timer and do a 10 minute quick clean and clean as much around your house as you can in that time.
  • Spend 15 minutes on laundry every day . I have a family of 6, and 15 minutes a day is all I need to stay 100% on laundry. This is time to gather laundry, throw in a load, and fold the load from the previous day. Spend 15 minutes a day and you’ll be amazed.
  • Get in the habit of moving items closer to where they belong as you move around your house. This take zero extra time, but will go a long way to keeping your house uncluttered.

RELATED: The 10 Simple Habits That’ll Keep Your Home Clean

For example, this means that if you’ve got something in the kitchen that belongs in an upstairs bedroom, and you’re headed upstairs to—let’s say—the laundry room, you take the item up the stairs. And leave it in the hallway on your way to the laundry room.

It didn’t take you any extra time, but it got that item that much closer to its destination.

Skeptical? Just try it for a few days and you’ll see how much easier it become to keep your house clean.

cleaning messy house

Some additional tips to keep your house clean:

  • Keep a basket on the stairs for items that need to get taken upstairs.
  • Enforce chores with your kids and make the responsible for their own messes. I find that no screen time if the house is messy gets kids motivated very quickly!
  • Follow the 1-minute rule . If a task takes one minute or less, do it right away. Making this a habit will keep surfaces clean and messes from growing.
  • Put on fun music and have a cleaning dance party with your kids . I keep a special playlist of my kids favorite, most energizing songs that I ONLY play when we’re doing a cleaning dance party. It gets them pumped to clean and they associate fun with cleaning. Win-win.

And remember, you don’t have to be perfect—you just have to be consistent. Doing a little bit every single day will go a long way to keeping on top of things, even during crazy hectic seasons of life.

This kind of reminds me of Marie Kondo’s method for decluttering, in the sense that you do it all in one big event instead of trying to do a little here and there and always feel like it’s a losing battle. I feel like cleaning your house this way would be really rewarding, help you really understand the situation your house is in, and give you a lot of motivation to want to maintain it.

September 15, 2019 at 5:44 am

I loved this read. Super funny and totally relatable. This one-day routine seems very doable for me. I’m a teacher and my house falls apart at the beginning of the school year when my classroom is coming together. I needed a set plan to get things looking good in my house, fast. This is it. THANK YOU!

September 15, 2019 at 8:41 am

I’m so glad you liked it!

November 16, 2021 at 8:36 pm

I really needed to read this. I will admit that I am terrified to get in this mindset because I am very A-type and my husband and daughter will live under my tyranny for several weeks while we adjust. It will not be fun! We do a lot, small family and small house. Youngest family member is a teen and I homeschool her (and work, often simultaneously). I’m just not a good enough person to keep on cleaning AND doing the normal chaotic routine, and not become very bitter about something like a misplaced spoon. I fear this is in my future 😂 Thank you for the motivation and yeah, the bathing suit underwear thing is very real!

I know this post is a little old but I just came across it and want to thank you! Sometimes I feel like I’m the only one who falls behind on the house and when it gets overwhelming I don’t know where to begin and I feel like a terrible mom but this not only gives me a do-able plan but boosts my mental health. Thank you thank you!!!

Oh girl, EVERYONE falls behind at some point!

May 14, 2022 at 10:11 am

Just found this… have in-laws visiting tomorrow and the house was a bomb site!! Followed it step by step and have done the impossible (well apart from one box room that has been used to hide remaining laundry!)

May 24, 2022 at 5:56 pm

Yay!!! And WELL DONE LIZ! SO glad it was helpful 🙂

June 28, 2022 at 10:07 pm

I was reading along and feeling motivated to get started…until I got to “laundry”. Then my panic set in!

I don’t have much trouble keeping dirty clothes washed. But folding and putting them away is where I struggle. I have ADHD and some mild OCD issues. I can walk past a pile of clean laundry for days or even weeks. But, when I fold and put it away it must be PERFECT! All of my clothes are filed into drawers or baskets. I will fold a T-shirt 3 times or more. Its an hours long task for me! It can make a cleaning day shut down! Do you have any advice to help me get through without shoving things into drawers?

August 24, 2022 at 10:28 am

I feel you, Nicki. Honestly, the folding is the hardest part for MOST people. For you, this is going to be a mindset game. It’s going to be overcoming the “perfect or nothing” mindset and instead shifting to a “rip the bandaid” mentality. Because in your quest for perfect folding, instead you end up with having to sift through piles of clean clothes to find stuff to wear/use. So “perfect” isn’t working (and it doesn’t work for most everyone because we all have more to do than time to do it). Since most people low-key hate folding clothes, I HIGHLY recommend the rip the bandaid method which is just setting a timer, and doing it for anywhere between 5-15 minutes at a time. Just “ripping the bandaid” and doing some stuff quickly. Because you’ll be amazed at how much you can get done in a short amount of focused time. Try and fold a bit every day. You’ll work through it all pretty quickly. You’ve got this.

Oh my God your site came up right away, thank God. I’ve been very I’ll and have two kids with special needs and am purging a bad marriage. I’m trying to dig out of disgusting, and I mean disgusting clutter and feeling pretty hopeless and depressed. Your site made me feel less alone. Luckily yesterday I did a lot to get my main level feeling manageable – started the disgusting upper level and felt, like a horrible human being. Seeing this is giving me the oophm to go back up and just toss the crap – for my sanity.

Thank you!!!

August 24, 2022 at 10:06 am

You are amazing, G. I can’t imagine how much you’re dealing with right now and yet you’re pressing forward and purging the bad and inviting in the good. Way to go.

July 27, 2022 at 11:55 am

Thank you so much. You really took the time to stay focused on the task at hand, and in the moment. I have a tendency to get myself very overwhelmed, and split-second fast, so reading this at the same time as I was working on each specific thing in that área, in the moment, real-time, you kept me focused on tasks at hand with your simple reminders. I just wanted to thank you, because I’ve been so overwhelmed, with trying to keep up with my 4 yr old, on top of my clutter building self, and how neither of us EVER put anything back where we found it, which is also never where it originally goes, in the first place, that I have all but forgotten exactly how to maintain my house, in any type of way, except to carry-on with the “any and everything all scattered in dissarray, dang this house is a mess- but ill deal with it later…”, type of lifestyle. I’m sure my husband also thanks you for the help you’ve given me by posting youras well since he’s more of a “neat and tidy,” ” put it back where you got it, so you can find it next time you need it”, type of person. How he puts un with my cleaning habitual, is beyond me, but he’s the best at not nagging me to cleanup. So I love him for that, and also so much more. Anyways thank you again from the bottom of my heart. You’re a life saber.

August 24, 2022 at 10:05 am

That you for the sweet message, Randy! It seriously made my day. You are not alone in feeling overwhelmed. Being a mom is very overwhelming with the millions of expectations flying at you all the dang time. How amazing are you for overcoming that overwhelm and taking some HUGE steps to getting organized? Way to go, Randy! I’m rooting for you 🙂

This is the missing link to my decluttering!! My home after some years of declutteting looks as though I have done nothing “because” I never have energy to clean!! The house just stayed dirty looking all the time which depressed me and discouraged my decluttering efforts. I started this routine one evening and began to see and feel different almost immediately!! Now its declutter, clean, then declutter more. 😊 The dirt staring in my face was the brick wall that blocked all my efforts!! You are genius!

August 24, 2022 at 10:02 am

Oh you are so sweet! Not a genius lol. But I sure do love a good checklist. Sometimes we just need the exact path to walk through instead of trying to think of each new step. Decision fatigue is real. And when faced with overwhelm, it’s hard to parse out what to do next. You’ve got this, Cheryl!

August 20, 2022 at 7:55 am

I love this!!! Thank you so much. I needed someone to tell me exactly what to do to dig my way out so I can start to declutter. Thank you!

August 24, 2022 at 9:58 am

So glad it’s helpful, Beth! And you’re not alone. Happens to everyone 🙂

August 30, 2022 at 6:55 pm

Just another thank you here! Big kids are in school, toddler is with grandma, and the baby *might* have a nap that’s not on me today. Ha! Slowly digging myself back to normality after a week of whole family sickness. I’ve been starting at the top of the list for a few days in a row (because washing and dishes is always back again but each day it’s more manageable!) and finding it’s getting faster each day and I’m giving myself 100% permission to go to bed as early as possible and not clean lol! I’m finally at picking up the rooms today, and clean floors feel like they might be in sight. Hooray and thanks!! Baby steps! x

Hi Erin! I love your name because it’s what I named my first born daughter 🙂 I just wanted to thank you for posting this. For me, the hardest part is knowing where to start so I just never start, other than cleaning the kitchen occasionally because I hate a dirty kitchen. I’ve got all the messes you have described in your list, a pile of dirty dishes, piles of dirty laundry all over the house, everything and I am going thru a lot of stress right now because my boyfriend is moving out and I am seeing how filthy the house really is so I am trying this routine as soon as he leaves because this house needs it and I needed your motivating article! Thank you so much!

Hi Tiffany! Honestly, you don’t even have to fold it TBH. Getting clean clothes in drawers is the biggest part of the battle. Add in folding gradually.

Essay on Cleanliness of Environment for Kids

Kids nowadays are growing up in a world where they are constantly exposed to germs. They go to school, play outside and come into contact with people and things that can cause infections. The best way to protect themselves from getting sick is by being clean. Here is an essay on how you can help your kids stay clean and healthy by teaching them the importance of keeping their environment clean. When we think about the environment, the first thing that comes to mind is the pollution humans create. In reality, the cleanliness of our surroundings is just as important as our environmental responsibility . Read BYJU’S essay on cleanliness of the environment to learn the significance of keeping the environment clean.

The health of people and other living beings depends on a healthy environment. Clean air and water are essential for human health, while plants need clean soil to grow healthy. Keeping our surroundings clean can help protect our health and the environment. There is a famous saying, “ Cleanliness is Godliness ”, and we must follow some basic hygiene steps to maintain the same. Encourage your kids to participate in environmental education programmes. These programmes teach kids about the importance of conserving resources and keeping our planet clean. In addition, we have briefly explained the top five ways to keep our environment clean in this short essay on cleanliness of the environment.

Cleanliness of Environment

Table of Contents

How to encourage good hygiene in kids, top 5 ways to keep the environment clean, importance of cleanliness.

Cleanliness is one of the most important things to maintain in our environment. It is not only good for the environment but also for all living beings. We need to encourage good hygiene in our kids if we want them to be responsible stewards of their surroundings. We have provided some ways to maintain the cleanliness of the environment here in BYJU’S essay on cleanliness of environment in English.

Set a good example yourself and keep your home clean. This will help your kids see that it is vital to take care of their environment. Help your kids learn about the importance of taking care of their bodies. Talk about how dirty our hands and feet can be, and show them how easy it is to clean them up.

There is no denying that maintaining a clean environment is something that we need to always keep in mind. It improves the overall look and feel of our surroundings, and it also helps protect the health of ourselves and the animals that reside in our ecosystem. This cleanliness of environment essay will discuss the top five ways to clean up our environment that positively impact both the quality of life and the environment itself.

  • There are many ways that you can help keep the environment clean. The first way to keep the environment clean is by maintaining a healthy ecosystem and reducing the usage of chemical pesticides and fertilizers.
  • Keeping the environment clean is essential for everyone. Children are the future of the world, and they need to learn how to care for the environment.
  • Using less energy can save a lot of money in the long run. For example, if we use electricity to power our lights instead of a light bulb, we can save a lot of money.
  • Recycling can also save money. If we recycle materials, such as paper, plastic, and metals, we will save a lot of money in the long run.
  • Finally, using public transportation is one of the best ways to conserve energy and protect the environment. Public transit uses less fuel than driving in cars. It also reduces traffic congestion and air pollution.

Pollution is a problem any time it enters the environment. Across the world, pollution comes from several sources, including automobiles and factories. Pollution also comes from natural sources, such as rain, sea salt, volcanoes etc. Here are two reasons why it is vital to keep our environment clean:

  • Good for our health : Pollution can cause respiratory problems, heart disease, and even cancer. By keeping our environment clean, we can reduce the risk of these illnesses. It protects our resources. Polluting our environment harms natural resources such as water and air. We can save environment and these resources for future generations by cleaning up our act.
  • It preserves our heritage : When improperly disposed waste ends up in rivers and oceans, it can harm fish populations and contaminate marine habitats. By keeping our environment clean, we can prevent pollution and preserve all the species in aquatic habitats as well as other living beings on Earth.

It is now commonly acknowledged that the health of our environment is linked to our own. We must take measures to clean up our act and preserve the natural resources we depend on. However, many people continue to put their convenience above all else, leading to an increasingly polluted world. We need to reduce the cause and make a difference. We can create a cleaner, healthier future for ourselves and for generations to come by doing so. For more kids learning activities, like essays , worksheets and stories , visit BYJU’S website.

Assess Your Mess

Kseniya Ovchinnikova / Getty Images

If you only have 30 minutes to make a dent in a large-scale mess, you need to have a strategy. According to Joanna Wirick, founder of Joanna Organize , adhering to a simple theory known as the "five things" method can be a game-changer.

Wirick explains how there are only five items in the room according to this method which are trash, dishes, things that have a place, and things that don't have a place.

The guiding principle is that if you address each of these categories individually, decluttering will be much less daunting.

Start with the trash category and toss anything past its prime, such as empty water bottles, receipts, and discarded take-out bags. Next, round up dirty dishes—coffee cups are likely to be the main offenders here—then, pivot to laundry.

With the first three categories out of the way, collect everything that has a designated home and put those items back where they belong.

As for items that could be deemed "floaters"—items without a designated home— corral those together in a basket or bin to be stowed in a closet and picked through as needed.

Discard Paper

CatLane / Getty Images

Whether it be mail or magazines, paper products have a knack for making a room look particularly unkempt since they can accumulate fast.

The good news is that paper doesn’t take up much space and is relatively easy to tuck away. File it away in folders or—even better—throw it out.

"Set a timer for 15 minutes and walk through every room in your home with a grocery bag in your hand," Michele Vig, an organization expert at Neat Little Nest , says.

Vig recommends looking for any type of paper like mailers or flyers that you can easily recycle.

For those who argue that they leave paperwork out as a reminder to attend to it, consider designating an area of your home for it. Pin flyers to a corkboard located in your mudroom or office, or use an old-fashioned check spindle to spear receipts and store them on a desktop in an orderly fashion.

Reset Your Rooms

Even if your home is sparkling, a sloppy sofa or a wrinkled rug can really drag it down.

To remedy this, take a moment to reset your rooms, or return them to their most picture-perfect state, with everything folded and neatly tucked away in its place.

Start by giving your sofa a spiff, fluff your pillows, neatly fold throw blankets, and return remotes to their rightful home.

Although simple in theory, you’ll likely be surprised at how refreshed this two or three minute activity can make a room feel.

Tuck Away Toys

Louisa Roberts

Since toys come in every shape and size, they can often create visual mayhem in your home.

With that in mind, there’s no better time than a 30-minute cleaning session to whisk them off the floors and into the storage items where they belong.

If your toy storage is exposed, try organizing your toys by color rather than tossing them all together into a box. Even though it's technically tidy, a mishmash of toys can create even more chaos. Another option is to opt for non-see-through storage such as wicker or seagrass baskets.

Clear Your Countertops

Immaculate Touch

Kitchen countertops often become ground zero for clutter. Thankfully, giving them a clean sweep can deliver big gains for little effort.

"Start by tucking away any appliances that you don't use every day, such as air fryers and standing mixers," Ina Darley, founder of the organizing firm Immaculate Touch , says.

Darley explains how tucking away spices and condiment bottles will make a big difference since their patterns and letterings can add more visual clutter to your kitchen.

If you're concerned about keeping your vinegar and oils accessible for cooking, try organizing them in bins or placing them on Lazy Susans, Darley says.

Store in Bins

Neat by Meg

Meg Markland, a professional organizer ar Neat by Meg , is a big fan of housing cleaning products in lightweight bins.

Markland explains how when your cleaning products are headquartered in one place, it can make a 30-minute cleaning session way easier.

"Group cleaning items intended for specific rooms, such as the bathroom, in bins together. This makes it simple to grab a bin and go," Markland says.

You might also think about utilizing this method for even more niches such as vacuum attachments, plant care, or garden supplies.

How to Clean an Air Conditioner and Keep Cool All Summer

When your air conditioner is clean you can, well, just chill!

preview for How to Keep Your Air Conditioner Clean

According to Dan DiClerico , director of the Good Housekeeping Institute Home Improvement and Outdoor Lab, "Seasonal top-to-bottom maintenance check-ups of a home's central air conditioning condenser, coolants, ductwork and more are best left to professional services, but there are things you can do yourself to help keep your unit — whether window or central — pumping out cool, dry air all season."

Note: Before attempting to clean any air conditioner, check your model's owner's manual or the company's website for cleaning recommendations and precautions to keep from voiding the manufacturer's warranty on your unit.

How to clean a central air conditioner

We checked the cleaning and maintenance recommendations of Carrier , a major manufacturer of central air conditioning systems. They suggest these cleaning steps to keep the exterior and interior parts of your home's central air conditioning humming.

How to clean the outdoor condenser and compressor

It's best to tackle this cleaning job at the very start of the season and then just clean away debris whenever you see it, such as after a storm.

  • Cut back any shrubs or plants from around the unit that may be blocking the airflow. Two feet of clearance will allow air to circulate freely, giving the unit room to breathe.
  • Sweep away any loose debris that's accumulated around the base. Remove leaves, twigs or anything stuck in the grille slats with a shop vacuum, utility vacuum or brush.
  • Turn off the circuit breaker and unplug the unit before undertaking any wet cleaning steps. Wash away dried, stuck-on dirt from the sides and top grilles with a brush dipped in a sudsy water solution.
  • With a garden hose held at a 45-degree angle, rinse away the detergent from the outside and, without removing the outer grille, flush as much dirt as you can from the interior coils too. Note: Never use a power washer to clean the coils. The strong force can damage them.
  • Some sites recommend removing the outer grille to better clean the coils and straighten any bent fins. We think this is best left to a professional.

closing grill after replacing air filter

How to clean interior vents and filters

Make cleaning interior vent covers and swapping out filters part of your regular cleaning routine.

  • Vacuum the slats of wall, ceiling and floor registers where the cool air blows into a room with your vacuum's soft dusting brush tool.
  • Check and replace the return-air vent filter (where the air from your house goes back out to be cooled) every three months or so, depending on your home and family needs. Active homes with pets or allergy-sufferers should replace it every month or two. Homes where the air conditioning isn't constantly running or where heavier filters are installed can go longer, maybe even up to a year, between replacements.

How to clean a window air conditioner

Always give window units a cleaning before installing them in the spring and again before storing them for the winter. Then, follow these steps mid-season as needed.

  • Regularly vacuum the front grilles, body and control panel with a soft dusting brush tool to remove loose dirt. If needed, wipe areas clean with a slightly damp cloth.
  • Check the foam filter monthly. If needed, vacuum it on low suction with the upholstery tool to remove dirt, lint and hair.
  • If the foam filter is very dirty, dip it in warm, sudsy water to clean it and then rinse well. Allow it to air dry thoroughly before placing it back into the air conditioner.
  • If your unit has a remote control, clean it regularly with a moist — not wet — cloth or disinfecting wipe. Remove the batteries before doing so and make sure no moisture works its way inside.
  • This is also a good time to inspect the seals around the unit to make sure cold air isn’t escaping. Any leaks should be sealed with weatherstripping.

The takeaway

In short, all air conditioners need regular maintenance and cleaning to work their best. Each spring and once or so mid-season, clear away exterior debris, vacuum or wash dirt from vents and grilles and change or wash filters as the unit's manufacturer recommends. For more in-depth maintenance of central air conditioning systems or if anything malfunctions, it's best to call a professional.
