Online learning, submit assignment on student’s behalf.

You can submit an assignment on behalf of your student if they send the assignment via email or on paper or observed in person, after the assignment past the due and/or the end date. This is also for evaluating non-submissions and external submissions assignments.

  • Who is this for:  Online Instructors
  • What is required:  A D2L Brightspace course shell and an Assignment area
  • Go to the Assignment link in the navbar
  • Click on the Assignment’s name to view submissions
  • From the Users tab, click Show Search Options link
  • Select “Users without submissions” from the Submissions list

  • You should see a list of students who haven’t submitted any assignment. Click Evaluate next to the student you would like to grade
  • Click Add a file to add the student’s assignment file (if available or if student send it to you via email). You can also add your own feedback file.
  • Provide student’s grade when you’re ready in the Score text area. Feel free to add audio or video feedback using the Record Audio or Record Video (limited to 3 minutes and as an attached file that students need to click). If you use a rubric, you can also assess using the rubrics tool.
  • Click the Publish  button to save the changes. You can click Save as Draft if you’re not ready to release the assessment to the student. If you need to retract or make changes to the grade after you publish, repeat step 3 through 5 to find the student again and click on Published link. After making your changes, Update , or if you retract your assessment, click Retract

How to Upload a Paper on Behalf of a Student – New

  • Click on the assignment link.
  • In the “Assignment Inbox” page, click inside the ‘ Submit on behalf of student ’ box, located at the top.
  • A list of students will pop up.  Select the name of a student on whose behalf you want to upload the paper.
  • Alternatively, you can type the last name of the student in the search box.
  • A message saying that you have selected to submit on behalf of a student will show.  Click Continue .
  • On the next screen, add the Submission Title , and click Choose File to upload file.
  • Once the file is attached, click Upload and Review .
  • In the next screen, click Submit to Turnitin .
  • The submission will be shown in the Assignment Inbox .
  • If you need to overwrite a student submission, you can follow the same steps to upload a new file. You will see a message warning you that the submission will be overwritten.  Click Continue to submit.

Submitting an assignment on behalf of a student

You may have students email you their assignment rather than submitting through Moodle themselves. If you want the assignment to be checked for academic integrity via Turnitin, this page will guide you through the process of submitting an assignment on behalf of a student.

Note: 

  • The drop-box might be replaced or complemented by a plain text area, depending on the submission type settings of the assignment (see  Edit an assignment ).
  • At this stage, the submission is a draft. You can advise the student to submit the assignment for grading, or do it on their behalf (see below). This will prevent the student from making any changes to the submission.

Cut-and-paste submissions on behalf of a student

The cut and paste submission option allows users to submit information from non-supported word processors or file types, or to only submit specific parts or areas of a document that may need an Originality Report generated.

Please note that only text can be submitted via the cut and paste method - any graphics, graphs, images, and formatting are lost when pasting into the text submission box.

  • Select Cut and paste from the Submit Paper: pull down menu. Single file upload is the default submission type.

  • Select an enrolled student name using the author pull down menu on the submission page. Papers submitted by an instructor on behalf of a student will appear in the student portfolio just as if the student made the submission. If you submit on behalf of an non-enrolled student they will be unable to view the submission, even after you have added them to the class.

Papers you submit for non-enrolled students cannot be graded or marked for paperless return to students

  • Enter the title for the paper.

To copy and paste text, highlight the text to submit in a word processing or text editing program and select copy from the edit menu. To transfer the text into the text box on Turnitin, click inside the text box of the submission page and select paste from the browser edit menu

  • Click on Upload to submit the text.

  • Click Go to assignment inbox to view the list of current student submissions, or click Submit another file to continue submitting as a student.

    On the Upload Assignment page, make your changes. Optionally, enter comments about your submission. Select Submit. The Review Submission History page appears with information about your submitted assignment. When you finish your assignment, you must select Submit. If you don't, your instructor won't receive your work.
