The 11 Best Teacher Planners for Classroom Management

A teacher planner is an under rated, but very helpful tool for managing multiple classes, assignments, meetings and any professional development throughout the year. With a quality teacher planner you can stay on top of grades, holidays as well as take essential notes or ideas you need to remember.

While we do suggest you take a look at using an iPad as a notebook , there are still a wide range of advantages to using a physical teacher planner. Let’s get to it.

What to look for in a teacher planner

A teacher planner is more than just a pretty notebook. It’s an affordable tool designed to stay organized through the year. With the right mix of calendars, perforated pages, weekly and monthly spreads, it’s quite surprising how useful the right teacher planner is.

An ideal teacher planner will have a few aspects based on what our teachers here at Teach and GO use and love. From our own practical experience of day to day teaching, here is what we found most useful and essential.

Price and Build Quality

A good teacher planner does not need to be expensive or complicated. While there are some expensive, premium teacher planners on the market. We have found that a lot of the most basic options were excellent to use for two semesters due to their solid build quality and durable paper.

Keeping track of public holidays, events, and personal appointments can get burdensome. While you could use an electronic planner, there is something to using a proper teacher planner with a notebook that you can easily take with you and markup with pens and markers.

Weekly and monthly organization

Grading homework and tests is the most time consuming aspect of being a teacher. A quality planner allows you to stay on top of this burdensome work with ease. You’ll want a planner that makes organizing your schedule as well as student work on a week by week basis as well as on a monthly basis.

Custom teacher planners

One size does not fit all. Regardless of what you’re teaching or perhaps even studying, you’ll need a teacher planner that allows you to customize it for your specific academic needs as an online teacher and in class teacher have different needs.

Best Teacher Planners for High School, Elementary and Online

So what are the best teacher planners for high school teachers, elementary teachers as well as teachers who also work online? Here is Teach and GO”s most helpful and essential teacher planners:

House of Doolittle Teachers – No Frills Teacher Planner

teacher assignment organizer

We loved this simple looking, easy to use teacher planner. Made from recycled paper (because let’s be honest, we teachers use a lot of paper) with a slightly hard cover coming in a variety of colors, this planner is well designed for teachers.

It comes with the first few pages designed to schedule up to four terms in advanced and lot’s of extra space for leaving specific notes and personal reminders. It also provides and adequate amount of weekly planning.

  • The space, layout and organization you’ll need as a teacher to stay organized and on top of your classes.
  • No monthly calendar.

Erin Codren – The industry leader in teacher planners

teacher assignment organizer

Erin Codren is an excellent brand that makes some outstanding planners for day to day use, monthly planning, travel as well as teacher planners. This particular academic planner is has a great functional layout with a lovely design.

It comes with multiple spreads and layouts as well as tabs to organize by the month. From keeping track of projects and exams, to monthly and weekly requirements, this planner comes with all the details you need including stickers, notes, and inspirational quotes.

  • Interchangeable covers.
  • Excellent overall build quality to last.
  • Great organization and layout of information.
  • Designed with a student in mind and not a teacher. But it’s customizable enough to be used as a teacher planner.

Delux Stylish Planner – The Comprehensive Choice

teacher assignment organizer

This academic planner has an artistic cover with the inside being stunningly well organized. Our teachers here at Teach and GO were quite surprised by how comprehensive and packed this unassuming planner actually is.

It contains most of what a modern teacher needs. Including a spot to manage contacts, meetings and professional development. It also comes with a monthly and weekly planner for lessons and activities as well as enough room to take notes.

Last the build quality is great. The cover is water resistant and the actual paper is thick and durable so you can color code things using markers without having to worry about the color spilling through.

  • An overall great planner with most organizational items a school teacher or online teacher would need to keep track of everything.
  • Build quality is excellent.
  • Helpful tabs.
  • The cover is not interchangeable so you’re stuck with one design.

Carson Dellosa Planners – The Elementary Option

teacher assignment organizer

This planner is a stylish, spiral bound teacher planner best for any elementary school teacher (or homeschool teacher) who wants to manage both classroom work as well as online teaching responsibilities. It’s good a colorful design with quotes and graphics and helps teachers keep track of their classrooms.

It comes with a monthly and weekly planner to help you remember specific events and meetings. It’s also comes with a section to help you lesson plan and keep records of any conversations.

  • Design fits well with elementary teachers or homeschool teachers with young students.
  • It’s a useful mix of lesson planner, record organizer and monthly work management.
  • Build quality could be better, it’s equivalent to a notebook with a slightly more durable cover.

Bloom Daily Planners – The premium option

teacher assignment organizer

As far as teacher planners go, Bloom produces some of the best around at a higher price point. So what do you get when you buy a simple planner? Quite a bit honestly.

First, Bloom with their hashtag “bloom girl” is a company for women by women. They pride themselves on creating a community of supportive and helpful teachers.

The actual teacher planner has all the attention to detail you should expect. Multiple tabs to organize subjects, a weekly planner as well as a monthly planner to stay on top of field trips, events and meetings. Great build quality and durable paper to last you.

Last, you also get access to the Bloom community of downloadable PDF’s and images.

  • An excellent alternative to Erin Codren Planners.
  • Excellent attention to detail with the design and layout.
  • Not ideal for male teachers with the whole emphasis on “bloom girl.”

Elan Hardcover Combination Planner – Lessons and Grades

teacher assignment organizer

If you’re look for on organizational tool that is outstanding for both lesson planning and record keeping of grades for your students then take a look at this hardcover planner.

While a lot of teachers do prefer to have two books, one as their personal planner and one for grades, if you want a combo option this is one of the best we’ve used.

What we like about this planner is simple. It comes with the right layout and organizational spreads to map multiple classes for weeks 10 weeks or more of learning.

It also as perforated pages to keep track of grades for up to 50 students on one page. Overall, a good weekly planner with grade keeping designed properly.

  • One of the few combo options we’ve found.
  • 36 weeks of recording pages for up to 50 students.
  • Grade pages and a daily schedule.
  • The build quality is lacking. The hard cover is more of that compressed paper style hard cover.

Pretty Simple Planners – The Minimal Option

teacher assignment organizer

What we liked about this planner is that it has the right mix of design while at the same time being basic and minimalist, but in the right ways.

Get this planner if you’re specifically looking for a weekly and monthly lesson planner. Of course it comes with a small sidebar section where you can take notes in an unstructured way.

Last, this teacher planner does not have spiral coil. This is fantastic if you want something small that can fit in to a folder, a backpack or a messenger bag . Overall, this is very helpful and handy planner.

  • Elegant design with a simple layout.
  • Great for lesson planning month to month and week to week.
  • No coil so it fits into folders or bags with ease.
  • If you want something with more complex spreads or a way to keep track of grades this is not it.

Inspirational Planner – The Small Option

teacher assignment organizer

This planner is quite small and perhaps even “cute” would be an accurate description. It’s your standard teacher planner with all the organizational options you would want except in a smaller size.

Inside you have a beautiful, feminine design with bright colors. Tabs to help you stay organized month by month and solid hardcover that’s quite durable while not making this planner needlessly bulky.

If you’ve been looking for a planner that has durable paper, great organization of lessons and activities on monthly and weekly basis, all in a small size then this is your planner.

  • Small size that’s easy to take with you.
  • Excellent organization of lessons and activities.
  • Tabs and quality paper for marking up with markers.
  • The small size is not for everyone.
  • Feminine design that is not appealing to male teachers.

Blue Sky Teacher Planner – The Classic Option

teacher assignment organizer

Blue Sky is a pretty well known brand for creating some decent, affordable and durable teacher planners. This planner is no exception. It’s your standard teacher planner with a lot of liberty given to writing notes and keeping track of lesson plans week to week and by month.

Comes with a convenient list of US holidays and a “contacts” page. Last, we loved the simple cover design. Not every teacher want’s a colorful cover so this is a great option if you want something a bit more subdued.

  • A good layout and spread of the weeks and month.
  • Dedicated pages for note taking and your personal contacts.
  • Flexible cover with a clean and simple design.
  • Build quality could be better compared to other options.

Tim Star Planner – The Two Year Choice

teacher assignment organizer

This planner is designed for two years. On top of that, it has a cool, sleek design that is perfect for both male and female teachers. We also loved that this planner had no spiral binding the paper.

The build quality on this teacher planner is also quite good and even though it has no spiral binding the paper. It had a durable and tough feel to it overall.

Inside we were quite surprised. It has pages for passwords, contacts, note taking as well as your standard week to week and monthly layout for lessons and activities.

  • Two years of planning in one book.
  • Feature rich with a lot of helpful organizational options.
  • Beautiful, classic design.
  • This is fairly big planner and some may find it bulky.
  • No tabs. As it’s for two years this is understandable, but tabs are helpful feature of any teacher planner.

Elan Soft Covers – The teacher planner

While we really like the Elan hardcover planner mentioned earlier, we want to complete this list of the best teacher planners by mentioning Elan’s soft cover planners for teachers.

Theses planers are more ideal if you’re a teacher who just want’s a teacher planner with lot’s of pages and good organization without all the stickers, quotes and motivational mantras found in other planners. The Elan planners come in 3 varieties for the amount of periods you teach at school.

Currently you can get a 6, 7 or 8 period lesson planner. Included in the planner are setting charts, daily planner and note taking, important dates and pages to serve as a grade book.

The Best Teacher Planners Conclusion

While a lot of record keeping, note taking and lesson planning is moving online. There is still something really nice and helpful about a physical book you can edit and customize as you want.

A quality teacher planner is very helpful in staying organized, focused and on top of your week to week activities. Best of all, they are not expensive. Once you have your own process with using a teacher planner, you’ll understand how useful such a simple notebook can be.

14 Classroom Organization Ideas Every Teacher Can Use

Hero image

Written by Holly (Teach Starter)

Classroom organization. Ask any veteran teacher why it’s important, and you’re bound to get an earful — both about how it helps and how it can be a challenge! But when you’re facing an open classroom and wondering how to whip things into shape, what you really need are solid classroom organization ideas.

That’s where our teacher team comes in!

Not only do we have some of the best organization ideas to start your school year off on the right step, but we’ve also taken a look at how to organize a classroom in ways that will bolster learning. Read on for tips from our teachers that they have used in their own classrooms, plus photos of some of their organizational systems.

How Does Classroom Organization Affect Learning?

As Teach Starter resource creator (and 13-year teaching veteran) Brittany Collins puts it: Classroom organization isn’t just for you, the teacher. It’s also for your students, to help them find what they need, when they need it. They don’t need to waste valuable lesson time wandering around, looking for their clipboards or headphones, because they’re in the same place every time. Plus when you’ve got a solid organization system in your classroom, students also know where and how to put things away, which helps keep the learning space neat and more conducive to learning.

Ever heard the old saying about a messy desk (or room) and a messy mind? That’s not just an old wives’ tale. Research shows that a well-organized classroom makes students feel safe and creates structure, which in turn can improve academic outcomes.

Classroom Organization Ideas

So you need to manage the copious amount of paperwork that will most likely start hitting your desk within hours of starting the school year, consider these classroom organization ideas and hacks to make all that … STUFF … easier to keep track of! From organizing your teacher desk to student stuff, let’s dive in, shall we?

Prep Students’ Desks for the First Day of School

This is a must, says long-time Georgia teacher and Teach Starter Senior Resource Producer Randi Smith. In her classroom, students enter on the very first day of school to find their desks already have yellow folders on them that contain ALL back to school forms for parents.

“Interactive notebooks are prepped and labeled ahead of time,” Smith says. “I also wrote the subject on the ends of their notebooks so they could see which notebook was which when crammed in a desk.”

Create a Binder for Each Month’s Handouts

File a copy of each handout in the appropriate month’s binder. This will make it easy to retrieve and make copies of any handouts students need, especially for make-up work!

Use Crates for Multiple Classes

Smith offers this organization tip for teachers who teach multiple classes: Use a crate system!

“Each period of students has a crate. Each crate has a folder for that student,” Smith explains. “In that folder students keep their interactive math notebook, a pencil and any handouts we use/need. That way as classes change, they can walk by, grab their folder and have everything right there.”

Assign Classroom Jobs

Want to get students involved in classroom organization from the first day of school? Classroom jobs go a long way toward fostering organizational skills in students and ensuring they have buy-in to make their classroom an organized and welcoming space!

Make filling out a classroom job application their day one homework assignment to start the year off right!

Create a Turn-In Bin

Teaching your students to be organized is a skill that will serve them for the rest of their lives, and this trick will do just that … while also helping with your classroom organization. Southern California teacher Paige has a “turn-in bin” in her classroom with file folders marked for each student. That way students know that when it’s time to turn in their work, they shouldn’t just drop it somewhere on her desk, where it runs the risk of being lost or creating a chaotic working environment.

Instead, students know to go to their classroom turn-in bin, find the folder marked with their name, and add their work. In turn, Paige already has everything sorted by the students! Genius!

turn in bin

Make “Sharpened” and “Unsharpened” Containers

Make it easier to grab a sharpened pencil with containers labeled with “sharpened” and “unsharpened.” This lets students — and let’s face it, you — know where to drop unsharpened pencils so they can get right back to work … and leave the sharpening for the class sharpener to take care of during downtime.

Sort Your Drawers By Day of the Week

To create the drawer set up below, use a set of five desk drawers (we purchased this one from Target). Use some washi tape to decorate each drawer (who doesn’t love a bit of washi tape?). Finally, you can use any of our  customizable tray labels to create the days of the week.

Once downloaded, we printed these tray labels two to a page to get the correct size for the drawers. Now you’ve got an organized system for your week of lesson plans and everything you need day by day!

Print an editable weekly lesson plan template   for easy weekly planning!

Dish Rack = Student Work Filing System

Have you tried using a dish rack in the classroom? Hear us out! You can put students’ work samples in there, making them easily accessible for meetings that you may have for that particular student. The front compartments of the dish drying rack could be used for pencils or name tags — whatever you may need handy on your desk during the day.

Grab an inexpensive rack at the dollar store and use one of these customizable name tags to label each folder (we used the 16 name tags to a page option).

classroom organization using a dish rack

Organize It All With Binder Clips

We all know the feeling. Your desk is clean at the beginning of the day, then during the craziness that is a school day, your desk is suddenly covered in the paperwork that then gets put into every growing Mount Paper on your desk.  That’s where these printable binder clip label templates become surprisingly helpful as a classroom organization idea.

Fill Up a Sub Tub

Sometimes you know when you’re going to have a sub … and then sometimes you get walloped by a case of strep throat that kicks in on a Saturday, and you’ve got to worry about what’s going to happen on Monday morning.

Grab a milk crate, a laundry basket, or really any container that will fit the supplies you need for your substitute to get the job done, and set it up in one spot in the classroom where you can easily direct your sub.

How does this keep you organized? Let’s put it this way: Have you ever come back to chaos when you had to be out unexpectedly? Exactly. The more you can prepare your sub, the more organized things will remain!

Don’t forget these must-haves for your sub tub:

Organize by Color

Is there anything we teachers won’t color code ? Quick answer: NO! And for good reason too — color coding is proven to help students organize their thinking and make connections. But it doesn’t just help our students. Color coding can make classroom organization a snap too.

Take this fun classroom organization idea from kindergarten teacher Mackenzie Lee Fuggett who bought plastic candy jars from the dollar store and loaded each one with individually colored markers. It makes it easy for students to know where to return each marker, and it’s pretty to boot!

markers in candy jars classroom organization

Office Supply Organization

You can’t do classroom organization hacks without featuring the ever-famous office supply drawers! These drawers and the different ways to decorate them have been all over social media! I purchased these drawers from our local hardware store and used washi tape (again, I may be addicted) to decorate each drawer.

Then, use our customizable desk name tags to label each drawer with whatever you want! This organization hack prevents your drawers in your desk from getting full of all of those bits and bobs that you seem to collect as a teacher.

Classroom Closet Organization

Storing all of those amazing resources that you have spent hours and hours printing and laminating is always a big question we get asked! Of course, you can store them in colored baskets, but sometimes, those amazing resources get forgotten about.

Using coat hangers and a tie hanger is just perfect! It’s another simple, yet effective, solution to ensure you get your use out of those teaching resources you have spent so much of your life creating!

Student-Centered Work Bins

Much like the turn-in bin, creating bins that let students know where to find the work they need  puts the kids in the driver’s seat when it comes to classroom organization! Set up milk crates with extra work, make-up work, extra supplies … really anything kids might need where they can help themselves.

Not only does it help with your classroom management, but it can help keep YOU organized as you have a specific place to put each thing!

Don’t forget to print labels for each bin !

Tabletop Organization

Do you organize your classroom seating in groups or pods? You’re going to need this trick from teacher April of @inseasonspaces . Buy inexpensive plastic plates and containers, and hot glue the containers to the plate for easily organized supplies that you can put on each table for your students!

plate with school supplies organized in small containers for classroom

It may take some time to set up some of these organization hacks, but we promise it will relieve some of the disorganized haze teachers often find themselves in when they look down at their messy desk or work area!

Teacher binder organization step-by-step.

Read this article for tips about teacher binder organization and get some teacher binder ideas for this school year. It’s time to get yourself organized and have your teaching essentials in one place.

image of a teacher binder

How often do you find yourself sitting in a meeting, caught without some essential piece of information that you need? I really hate that feeling of needing specific information – a student’s IEP, my list of grade-level standards, or a calendar – that makes you feel unprepared.

You need a teacher binder.

easy-teacher-binder-organization

What is a teacher binder?

A teacher binder is an actual binder you use to organize all the teachery things you need daily while working. You can customize it to hold everything that YOU need.

I love having everything in one place. It’s efficient for me and easy to stay organized with just one convenient binder. I can grab it as I head out to meetings and feel confident that what I need is inside.

So what actually goes inside? That can be different for each teacher.

Different subject areas need different materials and resources. Plus, every teacher organizes differently.

easy-teacher-binder-organization-image-9

Here’s a basic list of forms and resources you may want to include in your teacher binder:

  • Lesson Plans (this could be its own separate binder)
  • Curriculum map
  • Student Lists – medications, IEPs, etc.
  • Schedules of classes
  • Sub plans (this could also be its own separate binder)
  • Student data (this could also be its own separate binder)
  • Parent Communication Forms
  • Meeting Notes and agendas
  • Pockets to hold important papers/notes/forms/etc.

easy-teacher-binder-organization-image-8

There’s really no wrong answer about what to include in a teacher binder. It can be as fancy or as basic as you like.

How do you make a teacher binder?

You’ve got some options. You can quickly and easily make your own or buy some printable options on Teachers Pay Teachers. You’ll find links at the end of this article so you can get started FAST!

The binder I’m using this year is my own creation that I’ve developed from over 25 years of teaching. I’ve learned what works for me and what doesn’t work for me. That will be different for everyone. But I can say without a doubt that I’ve made minor changes every year.

Size does matter:

I first tried a small binder. I quickly outgrew it. Then I moved into several different binders for different topics, which made me feel like I had too many binders.

So I tried a really thick binder – that way, I’d only have ONE huge binder to lug around. Well, that was exactly the problem – it was HUGE! I started to hate it – so the enormous, cumbersome binder didn’t work for me.

More is better:

Now I’m back to having four different binders. I use:

  • A Teacher Binder
  • A Substitute Teacher Binder
  • An IEP Caseload Binder
  • A Student Data Binder

using-binders-to-organize-teaching-binders

I’m comfortable with these four binders. Each category is different enough that I don’t get confused. I also prefer using different colors for each binder – less confusion for my frazzled mind.

Teacher Binder Organization

You’ll need just a few supplies to set up your binders. The only thing you MUST have when getting started is an attractive binder (of course, you’re welcome to use an old, beat-up binder if you insist!).

To get organized, grab some binder clips, page protectors, and pocket folders for some serious organization.

supplies-you-need-to-make-a-teacher-binder

Write down what you plan to keep in your binder and lay out your pages, if possible, so you can see exactly what you’re working with. Split up each section with page dividers and tabs to find what you need quickly.

My binder sets come with tabs that you can edit and print yourself, or you can buy some ready-to-go tabs at the store, which stick directly to the pages or page dividers.

I suggest printing your binder cover in color , but it’s my personal preference if you want your page dividers in color.

If you have access to a color printer and plan to use the dividers for several years – go for it! But black and white works great also – because here’s the secret – you don’t really look at the page dividers all that much anyway!

You can simply slide the dividers into a page protector pouch and attach a binder tab – this kind of organization is so easy.

setting-up-an-organized-teaching-binder

The Teacher Binder – Yep, you need this

This is the binder that I use all day, every day, because my daily lesson plans, small group plans, and grade book are stored inside. This is where you keep all those teaching essentials that you need at a moment’s notice.

I also store:

  • class lists and checklists
  • daily schedules
  • general student lists, such as which students are on IEP, 504, medical issues, etc., for quick reference (I use the Student Binder for more individualized and detailed forms)
  • meeting notes and agendas
  • anything I need day-to-day
  • curriculum guides and pacing guides
  • a yearly calendar of important dates
  • my old-fashioned EZ-Grader and grade card comments list in a pocket page
  • a pencil pouch with basic supplies I might need during meetings, etc.

add-a-pencil-pouch-for-teaching-binder-essentials

The best part about this binder is that you have everything you need at your fingertips. I also love being able to grab it when I head to a meeting.

You might also want to add pocket folders. I hole-punch them and slip them right into the binder.

add-pocket-folders-to-your-teacher-binder

OK – I’m gonna get honest and embarrassingly shallow here.

I LOVE having an attractive binder that’s nice to look at and fun to use. It’s worth a little splurge on a great binder – it’s my little gift to myself every fall. Plus, I want the color that I want – whatever that might be for that particular year. Who wants one of those cheap binders that start falling apart and are hard to open and close?

I want the softer cover binder in a pretty color.

Shallow? Umm, yeah. But if it brightens my day and gives me a little lift right when I need it most – who cares! I work hard, and I deserve it.

get-your-teacher-binder-organized

Student Binder

I use this binder to store almost everything related to individual students. The student lists and information in this binder are more detailed than my teacher binder.

You may want to store:

  • IEP-related information, accommodations, modifications, full IEPs
  • 504 plans, medical plans, behavior plans
  • intervention plans
  • running records for your classes and small groups, data information
  • student notes and observations
  • conferencing notes
  • response to intervention forms (RTI)
  • conference forms/parent communications

What you keep in this binder really varies based on your grade level, assignment, and personal preferences. This binder can become huge if you let it. You’ll want to re-evaluate your needs and what you keep in it from year to year, or it will become ENORMOUS.

Substitute Teacher Binder

This takes a while to set up the first time, but it really, really helps when you’re going to be out of school for a day or so. Do the hard work upfront before you feel sick or have a family issue or emergency to deal with.

Here’s a list of the basics to include:

  • Class procedures should be one of the first pages in this binder. You’ll want to include everything from lining up for recess and specials to using the restroom. Be sure to briefly explain your discipline policy and list helpful teachers’ names and room numbers.
  • I keep our daily schedule in the very front, along with delay schedules and any other types of schedules that your sub may need.
  • You also want to keep an updated list of students who will be in your room during each time of the day. Some classrooms are particularly confusing, with students coming and going to meet with other teachers and counselors. I like to indicate which students are especially helpful if the sub has questions or needs help during class.
  • Emergency Sub Plans – you need these in case there’s a time that you’re unable to make it into the school or send detailed plans. These plans can be review lessons and practice materials that can be implemented and used at any time of year.
  • I also like to leave some extra time activities or puzzles, like word searches, coloring pages, crosswords, etc.
  • Also, include a pocket folder of forms for attendance, discipline, lunch count, etc.

10 Teacher Organization Hacks to Help You Regain Your Sanity

Use these organizational tips to keep stress from creeping into your classroom.

10 Organization Hacks to Help You Regain Your Sanity

My mother likes to tell the story of how, when I was 3 years old, I announced rather matter-of-factly that I was “born to organize.” Teaching is a hard job, and much of the stress involved is beyond our control. Being organized, however, is one thing that any teacher can do to reduce stress, create a more orderly classroom and ultimately be more effective at helping students learn. Here are my best organizational hacks.

1. Try a “Look Up” Board

Have a dedicated bulletin board in the classroom where you post the daily schedule, school calendar, classroom rules, school discipline rubrics and other information that students routinely ask about.

“Look Up” Board

2. Create an Agenda Grid

Tape off a grid on a section of the white board using electrical tape. Have columns for the day’s agenda, homework, upcoming tests or deadlines, and a column for the bell ringer activity. Be sure to have a space where you write the date each day.

Organization Hack Whiteboard

3. Use an A.W.O.L. (Absent Work Organizational Log) Binder

Get a binder with section dividers for each hour or course you teach. On a sheet of loose-leaf paper in each section, simply write down the date and what was done in that class that day and what work needs to be turned in. Be sure to punch holes in it and insert any handouts or other assignments.

A.W.O.L. (Absent Work Organizational Log) Binder

4. Use a Guest-Teacher Lesson Plan Binder

Every teacher must have this on his or her desk at all times—seriously. Include everything a guest teacher would possibly need to know about your class: policies and rules, schedule, which teacher to see for assistance, and the name of at least one trustworthy student in each hour. Be sure to include an emergency “I’m so sick I can’t get out of bed” lesson plan, which stands alone from any unit and could be used anytime at a moment’s notice.

Guest-Teacher Lesson Plan Binder

5. Keep a Place for Reminders

Designate a spot on your white board to write upcoming school events and do a quick rundown of the next few days’ events at the beginning of each class.

Reminders on whiteboard

6. Always Have an Expandable Folder

Instead of file folders and stacks on the desk to organize papers to grade, use an expandable file folder. Have an IN and an OUT file for each hour. Put papers to be graded in the IN file, and put them in the OUT file when they are graded and ready to pass back. This also makes things easy to transport if you need to take papers home to catch up on grading, and it helps prevent getting behind on grading.

black Expandable Folder

7. Prioritize Grading

Collect homework at the end of a unit of study. This saves paper, gives students some wiggle room to complete assignments before having to turn them in, and saves your sanity. At the end of a unit, collect a pack of homework and simply check it for completion.

Teacher putting a check on an assignment

8. Sync Your Calendars

Keep your calendar on Outlook or your Google account and sync it to your smartphone. This way you’ll never forget that parent meeting or assembly again.

Organization on the computer

9. Use Online Lesson Plan Books

Instead of writing out lesson plan book entries by hand, try out one of the many apps or websites that bring the traditional lesson plan book into the modern era. It takes some getting used to, but it’s great for staying organized.

10. Try Cloud Storage

Ditch the file cabinets! Pitch what you don’t need and scan what you do. Both Google and Microsoft have cloud storage options. You can access your files from work, home, even your smartphone.

Educators today are expected to fill many different roles, which is why teaching can be a challenging profession. The key to success in the field is a teacher's ability to organize herself, her classroom , and her students. As teachers try to become better organizers, they should visualize what results they want in their classrooms before they install an organizational system. Learning a few concepts can help.

Punctuality Means Students Are Ready to Learn

Wealan Pollard / Getty Images

Organization means that students are in their proper place at the proper time and know what's expected of them, and the teacher is ready with effective lessons and means of assessment . If students are not in class on time due to a lack of an effective tardy policy , their education suffers. Tardiness affects the student in question as well as other students who either have to wait for the student or endure a brief interruption as the tardy student enters the room.

Students Learn Important Life Habits

Hero Images / Getty Images

In addition to learning the importance of punctuality , students also need to learn about industry, perseverance, and achieving accuracy in their work. Without these skills, they won't be able to successfully transition to the real world of living in the community and holding a job. If teachers and schools provide a framework that reinforces these habits, students will benefit.

Good "Housekeeping" Keeps the Focus on Learning

Klaus Vedfelt / Getty Images

When the little items are established, such as when pencil sharpening is allowed or how students are able to go to the restroom without disrupting the class, the classroom itself runs in a much more orderly fashion, which allows for more time for instruction and student learning. Teachers who do not have systems for these and other housekeeping items in place waste precious teaching time to deal with situations that have no bearing on student learning and achievement. Once organizational systems are in place and students understand and follow them, the teacher is left free to actually instruct the students. The focus of the day can be the prepared lesson plan , not whether a student is allowed to go to the restroom at this particular moment.

Good Organization Leads to Fewer Discipline Problems

Caiaimage / Chris Ryan / Getty Images

If a teacher has a warmup exercise on the board when students enter the room, this gives them a framework for starting the day that is lesson-centered. Students are expected to sit in their seats and begin working when they enter the class. Having a warmup assignment ready each day means that students have less free time to chat and potentially become disruptive. Having a system for handling late work can also help minimize classroom disruptions. If a teacher does not have a system in place for giving students their assignments when they have been absent, the educator will have to spend valuable time at the beginning of class determining what assignment to give them—leaving the class unmonitored for a few minutes, a recipe for disruptions even before the day's lesson begins.

What is a Graphic Organizer?

Graphic organizers are tools that help visually organize information and complex concepts in a way that is easy to understand and memorize. Graphic organizers effectively organize and visualize information by creating links between concepts or facts. By visually illustrating the relationships between concepts, graphic organizers make it easier to analyze and internalize information.

We know that every mind works differently. Presenting information in a systematic, visual format enables students to follow along at their own pace and grasp relationships more easily than via verbal explanation alone. They can also be an invaluable tool for visual learners.

12 Graphic Organizer Examples for Different Learning Objectives

There are countless types of graphic organizers out there, as information can be organized and visualized in many different ways. We’ll focus on 12 of the most helpful types of graphic organizers for teachers and students, organized by the primary purpose each one serves.

Graphic Organizers for Brainstorming and Organizing Ideas

Some graphic organizers are specifically great for organizing ideas for brainstorming. Here are three examples.

Mind maps are graphic organizers that organize information in a structured and visually attractive fashion. When a mind map is finished, you will get a structure that looks like a spider web. An example of the graphic organizer is the following mind map on Piktochart . It shows the values of a company, with different values branching out from the central idea, that is, company values .

example of a mind map

We all know that information retention can become quite difficult, especially when a number of different subtopics link to one main topic. A student could use a mind map to break down the taxonomy of living things, with ‘Organisms’ in the center, ‘Kingdoms’ branching out one level, ‘Phyla’ branching out from each ‘Kingdom’ and so on.

Concept Map

Concept maps are another type of graphic organizer that excels at representing hierarchical information. They use boxes or circles to represent different concepts, with lines or arrows labeled to illustrate the relationships between them.

Concept maps have many uses in educational settings. They help in the sequential understanding of different concepts for students. For example, if a teacher has to break down a country’s government structure, he or she will most likely use a concept map to show the branches and subbranches of different government institutions systematically.

Cluster Diagram

Cluster or cloud diagrams help brainstorm different ideas around a main concept. This type of graphic organizer is called a cluster because the topic or ideas related to the main idea form a cluster around it. For example, a cluster diagram can assist students determine how much they know about a topic and what areas need further research.

This type of graphic organizer is very useful when generating ideas for a project or planning its different phases. Cluster diagrams break down a complex subject into smaller parts, both for individuals and for groups, for example, during defining scope of a project in its early stage.

Graphic Organizers for Comparing and Contrasting

The next type of graphic organizer helps you to compare two or more concepts. You can use this organizer to compare and contrast ideas, people, events, and policies. For instance, say you’re teaching a unit on different forms of government. You could use a compare and contrast graphic organizer to help students parse out key similarities and differences between a democracy and a dictatorship. This type of graphic organizer will be your go-to option.

It is important to know that when you use this type of graphic organizer to compare two concepts, you are covering both the similarities and differences between those concepts. However, with contrast, only the differences are mentioned. Some examples of this category of graphic organizers are given below.

Venn Diagram

A Venn Diagram usually comprises two to three overlapping circles. The commonalities between the concepts are written in the shared or overlapping area, whereas all the distinct or unique features are mentioned in the part of the circle that does not overlap with any other circle.

For example, you could have your students draw Venn diagram for the fruits and vegetables that red or orange. The common area between the two circles will contain vegetables like tomatoes that come in both these categories. The Venn diagram below shows the comparison of mitosis and meiosis.

example of a venn diagram showing the overlap between meiosis and mitosis

Another brilliant graphic organizer for comparing and contrasting is the “T Chart.” A T-chart is simply a table with two columns, usually comparing two items or ideas, or sorting data into categories. This type of graphic organizer is super quick to create and easy to understand, especially for students. T charts can also be used to categorize and jot down pros and cons.

The T chart is a popular option for both teachers and students because its layout is straightforward, and it offers a wide array of functions. For example, if the students are planning to go on a field trip but are not able to choose a location, then T charts can help a great deal.

Teachers can ask the students to make a T chart of potential places and list the advantages and disadvantages of each of the locations in their respective columns. Also, a T chart is a great graphic organizer to show upsides and downsides of a topic.

Graphic Organizers for Sequencing and Cause-Effect

Next on the list are graphic organizers, which show the sequence or timeline of events. Sequence and timeline graphic organizers are particularly useful for teachers when presenting events in chronological order is important. Some of the graphic organizers that help students visualize the relationships between steps in a process or links in a chain of events are as follows.

A timeline graphic organizer shows a sequence of events in chronological order. History subjects make great use of timelines . Because major historical events can be shown in a proper sequence using a timeline. Along with dates, timelines give the flexibility to mention locations as well. For example, a timeline of the American Revolution could chart major turning points like the Boston Tea Party, the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and the Battle of Yorktown.

Timelines can also be used to show how a certain phenomenon has progressed over time, such as a business’s growth. The Piktochart timeline template below charts key events in the life and reign of Queen Elizabeth II. Notice how the combination of images and concise text makes the chronology engaging and easy to follow.

This type of graphic organizer shows the steps of a process and how all the steps combine in a sequence to make the process happen. Flowcharts systematically and clearly document and communicate how a process works and what steps are involved in it, from start to finish. When a process is mapped using a flowchart , potential areas or steps of improvement can be identified.

Cause and Effect Diagram

As the name suggests, a cause-and-effect diagram groups those causes of a problem that either have already happened or might happen. Relationships between different contributing factors can also be shown using a cause-and-effect diagram.

Often referred to as an Ishikawa diagram, or a fishbone diagram, a cause-and-effect visual is one of the basic tools of quality . While often associated with root cause analysis in business and manufacturing, cause-and-effect diagrams are equally powerful for getting to the bottom of issues in the classroom. By mapping out all the potential contributing factors to a problem, students can start to identify patterns and actionable solution.

Graphic Organizers for Main Idea and Supporting Details

This category of graphic organizers shows a main idea and its supporting ideas. It defines and visualizes a core concept and all its supporting details. It is a great tool that helps students develop an outline of a topic for better understanding. Some of the examples are given below.

Main Idea Web

This type of graphic organizer starts with a main idea and branches out into related sub-ideas. The key point behind web graphic organizers is sometimes referred to as a light bulb. It is predominantly  used to brainstorm ideas for writing purposes. For example, if a student wrote a report on photosynthesis, they could put “photosynthesis” in the center, then branch out to related subtopics like ‘chloroplasts’, ‘light-dependent reactions’, etc.

Herringbone Diagram

A herringbone diagram is used when processes are involved. This type of web organizer helps you break down variations in a process or causes that lead up to an effect. A herringbone diagram is particularly important for avoiding an event before it happens.

Graphic Organizers for Writing and Note-taking

Another group of graphic organizers we’ll explore focuses on writing and note-taking. Writing, especially essays, proves challenging for many students as they struggle with arranging ideas. Here are a couple of graphic organizers for writing, which can be of great help to you.

Essay writing is an important skill that students use throughout their lives. An essay map graphic organizer is a brilliant tool for students, as it helps them to chalk out the outline in a systematic manner without missing any detail. Once a student is done with his or her essay map, writing becomes a walk in the park.

Cornell Map

This graphic organizer is a popular technique for note-taking. Particularly during lectures and textbook reading, the Cornell Map template comes in handy as it helps students to jot down all the important ideas and information systematically. It usually has a cue column, a note-taking column, and a summary section.

When students are taking notes, the key ideas, important dates, formulas and other such details would go into the “note-taking” column. They will add questions, cues, and headings in the “cue” column. Whereas, the “summary” section will include a summary of the notes as one or two key learning outcomes. This helps students identify important details when they revise their notes later on.

Tips for Using Graphic Organizers Effectively

It is important for teachers to use graphic organizers in a manner that maximizes the chances of effective learning. Some of the tips to make sure a graphic organizer effective are given below.

  • Simple is Always Better —Your graphic organizers must always be simple. This will help students learn quickly. For example, avoid complete sentences unless absolutely necessary.
  • Offer a Variety of Graphic Organizers – Expose your students to different types of graphic organizers day-to-day. This will bring out the best in them in terms of creativity.
  • Use the to Assess Student Learning – Give the students a task along with a graphic organizer focused on the skill in focus. Use their graphic organizers to assess their standing in the class.
  • Use them Frequently —Using graphic organizers frequently helps students internalize what is being taught. The more often students use these tools to engage with content, the more adept they’ll become at using them independently.

A graphic organizer is a tool for teachers to explain complex problems to their students. Similarly, graphic organizers help students visualize the information being taught in class.

There are different graphic organizers, each suited to a specific purpose or thinking process. Whether it’s brainstorming ideas, comparing and contrasting, sequencing events, mapping out an essay, or taking structured notes, there’s a graphic organizer that can help.Teachers can encourage their students to generate ideas by using graphic organizers in their lessons. Students can use graphic organizers to enhance their writing skills.

Top 7 Homework Planner Apps for Students

Whether you are attending classes, completing your assignments, studying for a quiz, project work, extra-curricular activities, or squeezing some time for friends and family. You’d agree that organizing and planning goes a long way. That’s why a homework organizer or a homework planner app can be a lifesaver to keep track of all your assignments, tests, submission deadlines, and exams. I did the research and shortlisted the perfect homework planner apps for Android and iOS. Let’s check those out.

Read:  Best Notes App for Windows to Increase Productivity

Homework Planner Apps for Students

1. student planner- homework agenda & notes.

The first app on the list is a simple homework and notes management app. It keeps track of homework, assignments, projects, and to-do lists. The layout is minimal, all the tasks are neatly organized with a colored bookmark for easy identification. You can mark a task complete and remove it from the pending list.

Courses can be added easily and color-coded as well. The calendar shows any upcoming deadlines so you can prioritize accordingly. The tasks have a progress bar that you can adjust as you make progress which enables you to get a quick summary without actually opening every task.

You can also break your assignments in small chunks as subtasks that would make finishing a task much easier and the progress bar will fill automatically. It also allows you to attach media files to your assignments or projects for easy access to the important information in one place.

homework planner apps- agenda

  • Progress bar
  • Deadline Reminders
  • Calendar View
  • No option to sync data to the cloud

Student Planner is a great app for all the students, it has all the necessary features like Deadline reminders, subtasks, progress bar, color-coded tasks, and courses. It can significantly increase your productivity when used regularly. You can get this app for free in the Play Store.

Install Student Planner- Homework Agenda ( Android )

2. Student Planner

Student Planner is another fast and simple homework management app which is wrapped by a beautiful and intuitive material designed UI. What Student Planner adds to the table is the inclusion of a schedule or time table which you can use to either store your class schedule or it might even be a study schedule for your exams.

You first start by adding your subject and the schedule then you can add an assignment or set a reminder. The due assignments are arranged as separate cards and can be swiped away once done with.

homework planner apps- Student Planner Android

  •  Simple and easy to get started with
  •  Fast and small in size
  •  Beautiful Minimal UI
  •  Option for Schedule
  • No sync/backup
  • Timetable implementation not perfect

I would recommend this app to anyone who is looking for a simple homework management app with timetable support and a minimal UI.

Install Student Planner ( Android )

Egenda is simple. Open the app, add all the classes or subjects to the app, and once that is set up, you have the option of adding a new Homework, Quiz, Project, or Test and choose the respective subject deadlines. The app also arranges the due work in cards that can be swiped away when done. But what I love the most about this app is that the fact it allows you to go subject-wise and view all your upcoming tests, projects, or pending assignments which is a huge convenience for planning your schedule ahead of time instead of the previous day.

Unfortunately, the app doesn’t have a timetable option, but in its latest update, it added a  Calendar View  where you can see your whole month at a glance with your assignments, tests, and projects.

homework planner apps- Egenda Android

  •  Subject-wise sorting
  •  Calendar View
  • No timetable support

Egenda provides some great tools for Homework and Test planning and I am sure anyone would find them extremely convenient and useful. But keeping its single con in mind, go for this app if you are not too keen on having a schedule or timetable.

Install  Egenda  ( Android  |  iOS )

4. ChalkBoard

The next app on our list is ChalkBoard, which I found out to be a pretty smart homework planner app. Chalkboard strikes a perfect balance between simplicity and features.

Although the setup process is a little longer than the previous three apps, as you have to feed meticulous details about the classes, teacher, and schedule. It is worth the effort.

On the home screen, you are shown upcoming classes, events tab, and upcoming tests. ChalkBoard fetches the dates for every subject from the Timetable for your future classes. Little features like these make the app stand out from the rest and give an overall great experience. You can also view classes and assignments subject wise.

homework planner apps- ChalkBoard Android

  • Proper Timetable
  • Ability to add teachers for subjects
  • View tomorrow’s classes as well as assignments/tests/quizzes
  • Smart features
  • Little longer to set up
  • No calendar view

If you are looking for a homework planner as well as a school planner, Chalkboard is the app as it strikes a great ground with almost all the features one might need while not being too bulky.

Install ChalkBoard ( Android )

5. School Planner

School Planner is a full-fledged planning application designed for students to manage their career as a student. Along with your homework and timetables, School Planner offers you to keep track of your grades and attendance, add contacts for teachers, add recorded lectures, and even multiple planners.

The app supports backing up of all your data via Google Drive, Calendar View along with a weekly report, attaching snapshots to your assignment reminders, student accounts from ClassViva, and a lot more. In spite of so many features, the app doesn’t feel slow at all and delivers a powerful performance with its beautiful design.

homework planner apps- School Planner Android

  • Full-fledged student companion
  • Feature-packed and free
  • Supports sync and backup
  • Widget Support
  • Tedious setup procedure
  • Big in size
  • Complex, not so smooth learning curve

While it is not for someone who is looking for a fast and easy way into homework management, School Planner is a great student companion app and serious students will surely get the most out of hit.

Install School Planner ( Android )

6. My Study Life

My Study Life comes with its own web app and syncs with the Android app, essentially making your data accessible from any device as long as it has a browser.

It implements a goal-centric circular tracker that shows your progress. The Calendar view combines your timetable, deadlines, and shows all your classes and assignments, projects in a single place.

  • Refreshingly new UI
  • Access from anywhere through its web app

Universities, schools react to student use of generative AI programs including ChatGPT

Uni student Daniel hesitates when asked if he has used ChatGPT to cheat on assignments before.

His answer is "no", but the 22-year-old feels the need to explain it further.

"I don't think it's cheating," he said.

"As long as you accredit it and use it for like a foundation for your assignment I think it's fine."

A man stands on the steps of a stone building. He is wearing a hooded jumper.

Schools and universities have been scrambling to keep up since ChatGPT and other generative AI language programs were released in late 2022.

University student Lan Lang, 18, said quite a few people used generative AI for assessments such as English assignments.

"I do get Chat to like explain stuff to me if teachers don't really explain it that well," Lan Lang said.

A teenage girl and boy stand next to each other in a university building, smiling.

She said she used AI detection software on her work.

"We put it through Turnitin, which just basically detects if you've used AI, or if you've copied off anyone else's work," she said.

Caught out in schools

High school teacher Ryan Miller said he wasn't seeing a lot of generative AI used in the Year 12 and Year 8 classes he taught but understood from colleagues other age groups were using it.

A man wearing a bow tie smiles at the camera.

"What I hear, when I'm in the staff room, is that a lot of Year 9s, 10s, [and] 11s are pushing the boundaries," Mr Miller said.

He said Year 12 students tended to be more careful after being warned at the start of the year and constantly reminded of consequences.

"Basically, they're told if their work is seen to be made ... predominantly with AI, that it won't be assessed," he said.

Mr Miller said Year 8s, being a little newer to the school, hadn't used it as much.

He said teachers tended to give students a warning if they were detected using generative AI.

"And nine times out of 10 they'll probably own up to it and say, 'Yeah, look, it wasn't ... 100 per cent my own work'," he said.

He said students would rewrite the work so it could be assessed again.

"But it's sort of a one warning per kid, per year for most teachers, I think," he said.

Fellow teacher Hugh Kinnane said generative AI was probably "pretty rife" in assignment work.

He said he most regularly saw it cropping up with students who were trying to avoid doing any work.

"And then it's a last-minute job," he said.

A woman sits at a desk. She is looking at the camera with a blank expression.

Drawing the line

University of Adelaide Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic Jennie Shaw said while her university embraced the use of AI, it could still be used to cheat.

"So we're saying, of course, that is not allowed," Dr Shaw said.

She said generative AI was included in academic integrity modules for first-year students.

"We make it really clear to students what is OK and what is not OK," she said.

Dr Shaw said there were instances when students were encouraged to use generative AI and then critique the quality of its answer.

"What we are asking our students and our staff to do is to reference when they do use it," she said.

She said it was a requirement that as much content as possible was checked by similarity detection software.

According to Turnitin's website — which is used by the University of Adelaide as well as many other universities across Australia to detect AI-generated content— the company is committed to a false positive rate of less than 1 per cent to ensure not students are falsely accused of misconduct.

AI arms race

The software has put students at the centre of a battle for superiority between programs generating answers for their assignments and those designed to catch them out.

And according to Australian Institute for Machine Learning senior lecturer Feras Dayoub, some are getting caught in the crossfire.

A man stands in front of a whiteboard. He is smiling.

He said companies that created AI chatbots were trying to be undetectable while companies that created AI detection software wanted to detect everything.

"There will be a lot of false positives," Dr Dayoub said.

He said it could be an unpleasant experience for the student if the detector was wrong.

Two men stand in the courtyard of a university. They are smiling at the camera.

University student Ethan, 19, said single words were sometimes highlighted in his Turnitin submissions.

"It can be a bit inaccurate," Ethan said.

Dr Shaw said she understood the detection software had its faults.

"We would find probably two thirds of anything they pick up saying there's some unacceptably high levels of similarity here is often just picking up patterns in language," she said.

"I know some universities have chosen to turn it off because it does turn up lots of false positives.

"We're choosing to use it at this point."

Changing education

The Department of Education released a nationwide framework in December last year for the use of generative AI in schools.

Dr Shaw said the technology was changing the way teachers taught and students learned.

"But we still need students to have deep knowledge," she said.

"We need them to know how to use the tools in their profession.

"And again, one of those in many professions will now be generative AI, and we need them to be able to call out when it's wrong."

Dr Dayoub said he would prefer a future in which there was no need for detectors because people had changed the way they taught and assessed.

He said another option would be to take a stricter approach, where students did the work themselves and there would be no help.

"In that case you need the detectors so there will be a huge market for these detectors and it will become a race," he said.

"I don't like that future."
