Starting an automobile repair workshop must figure in a list of top 10 small business ideas . However, it is better to start small and slowly build traction as the business grows. Another reason is that the equipment and tools are quite expensive, so you will need some time to build up your arsenal! Here, we describe how you can start an auto repair business:

  • Have A Business Plan- A clear business plan is necessary to make your enterprise a success. Make a business plan and define the scope of your operation. Determine how many customers can you manage in a day, and in what ways can you help them. You can either start an auto shop business from the scratch or buy an existing business. Starting a business from scratch means that you have to buy all the tools and equipment. Franchising is another option. Though the initial fees are high, you get the advantage of marketing and a national brand name.
  • Location- Starting an auto repair shop at a strategic location where there are not too many such services around will be a smart decision. It should also be close to main roads and highways, and at a centralised location concerning your customer base. If you have a garage or shed at home, you can start your business from there. One thing to note is that there should be enough space in the workshop to accommodate all your future needs.
  • Finance- To start this business, you have to make some investments or get a loan. You will need some funds to lease or rent your workshop space, buy the equipment, decorate the space, and put up a signboard. Your business’s break-even analysis will be based on the average running costs, including fixed costs such as utilities, rent, etc., and salaries. Your business plan will help you create a set of financial projections that will help you to secure investments or get a loan to start your shop. Managing cash flow can be a challenge for some auto shops. The minimum return on investment should be 30 percent per annum. The car repair service cost is an important factor while pricing the services.

4. Manpower- Modern cars have many high-tech features like lane-centering steering, adaptive cruise control, and Bluetooth entertainment systems, that take a lot of expertise. You have to hire highly-skilled, professional technicians who are trained to attend to any issues arising on the vehicles. The mechanics should be able to handle multiple types of car engines. People skills along with a caring personality are important in this job.

If you care about your work, you would need the right tools and equipment to get started. You can buy a lot of equipment second hand, where you can get a good deal.

  • Floor Jacks and jack-stands to lift up the cars.
  • A heavy-duty air compressor to power your garage.
  • Wrenches, belts, gear, shafts, and other specialty tools.
  • Oil drain bucket to hold coolant or oil.
  • Battery charger and jumper to jump cars, especially if they are towed to your garage.
  • Engine hoist for servicing engines.
  • Brake blades-buy a good brand because these are going to be your bread and butter.
  • A wall-mounted strut compressor will allow you to do suspension work on customer’s cars. Cars need to change their struts after around every 100,000 km. This gadget will help you to do that.
  • Working bays where you will service the cars.
  • A brake lathe.

All these types of equipment will help your business to be seamless, once it becomes operational.

While starting an auto repair business , you have to carefully plan the layout of your shop. Since you will be using a clear-lift hoist, the ceiling should be at least 14 feet high. Also, the access must be wide enough for the customers to drive their cars in. Among the different areas, you will need a reception hall for customers, a car lift area, a workbench area, a warehouse to keep spare parts and tires, and an office.

The auto shop should maintain a uniform, professional appearance for customers, maximising space and improving the consumer experience. The waiting area should be nice because this is where the customers are going to sit while their cars are being serviced. Make sure to have a TV and a coffee vending machine installed to make them feel comfortable.

Cleanliness

It is very important to keep the workplace and the office area clean. This will convey a professional look and also impress the customers. Customers can judge the quality of work in your shop, by how clean the place is.

The major issues that affect auto repair shops are a lack of standardised service, transparency, and trust. You would need to build the right infrastructure to give great service.  The range of services that your workshop can provide are:

  • Periodic maintenance and oil change
  • Body repairs and denting- painting
  • Wheel balancing
  • Brake and engine service
  • Repair and maintenance of fuel injection system.
  • Overhaul of clutch and suspension system
  • AC diagnostics and service.
  • Tire service
  • Automatic car wash

Your workshop can offer other value-added services like pick-up-and-drop, annual service maintenance plan, roadside assistance, cashless inspection and repair covered by insurance, etc. Other additional services might include the installation of customised alarm systems, the tinting of windows, and the beautification of the vehicle. Auto collision repair is another niche and profitable field.

All of the above require you to have proprietary knowledge, hi-tech tools, and software. You can also stock genuine spare parts because Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) parts are often difficult to obtain. You can also start an auto body shop and repair business. This will be able to fix any damage to a car or SUV. This includes glass and windshield replacement and paint refinishing.

Organisation

To avoid wasting resources, labor, and time in your auto shop, proper organisation is the key. Smart design and efficient use of space enhance aesthetics and streamline work. An efficient workshop should serve the daily needs of technicians, allowing them to work comfortably and efficiently. You have to make a catalog of all your special tools so that you don’t waste time looking for them. Wall systems and storage cabinets can be used to keep the tools and make the workspace clutter-free.

An organised auto-shop ensures ease of access for parts and tools, logical procedural sequences, and efficient use of space. Customer satisfaction should be your number one goal. You should form a tie-up with the major insurance service providers so that when a customer turns up with a damaged car, you can provide him with a cashless repair. This will be a seamless experience for the customer.

Marketing Strategies

To keep your customers coming back, and to grow your business, you need to implement trackable marketing strategies. You can ask your satisfied customers to give you good reviews, which you can post on your social media page. You can list your business on any relevant business site like GoogleMy Business, and share relevant information like shop timings, prices of services, and more. All over the globe, the auto repair business is important, because there is a constant need to get cars fixed. So, this business will never be extinct, and there are lots of opportunities to make money in this venture.

  • Choose your industry: Choosing a field of operation for your business is the next significant step in the path of establishing a new automobile business. From a wide range of business options, you may choose single or multiple options based on your knowledge, expertise, and experience in the field. Thorough research and analysis determining the rate, scope, and pace of success in the industry must also be conducted, in addition to understanding competition, demand, and growth rates of demand in the industry. Investors and investments in the industry, the overall cost of operation and distribution, nature of the target buyer are a few other aspects for you to consider before starting your business.

Additionally, many automotive businesses also publish their ads on print media like newspapers and magazines to promote their products. Broadcasting advertisements on television is also an effective way to market auto products and services.

Cost of setting up a car care business in India

car

A lot depends on what scale you are looking for. I have seen simplest of setups, where you need a water connection, water tank a water pump for washing. A vacuum cleaner to vacuum cars, a couple of guys and you are good to start.

BHPian Livnletcarsliv recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

What do you think is the cost of setting up a detailing business?

What are the most needed things and what are the things that are good to have?

When can I become profitable?

Here's what BHPian Rachit.K.Dogra had to say on the matter:

I happened to have some discussions around setting up a 3M franchised store in Gurgaon. From a 3M store perspective, there was a pretty sizable initial cost that needed to be given to 3M, under which they will setup your shop and will give you a stock of products for the remaining value. I was a bit taken aback knowing that that total cost of those fancy detailing roof lights was close to 15 lakhs. If let's say you don't go through a franchised model, here is what I think is essential for a good car detailing studio to attract good customers: Good washing area and equipment. (Cost can vary depending upon the if it's indoor / outdoor or if there is a lift installation or not) Good quality products. (Cost will depend upon tie ups and stock procurement) Some fancy roof white lights, which brings out the smallest of the swirl marks in customers cars, so that they get tempted to spend to get those polished. Staff training A lot depends on what scale you are looking for. I have seen simplest of setups, where you need a water connection, water tank a water pump for washing. A vacuum cleaner to vacuum cars, a couple of guys and you are good to start.

Here's what BHPian anantpoddar had to say on the matter:

If you're looking at the essentials of starting a detailing business, check out the YouTube channel of Dallas Paint Correction. This guy covers the basics of starting. Cost will depend entirely on the scale at which you want to start. Some of the basics that you need to answer based on your areas of strengths and weaknesses: Whether you want to start small and test the waters or go all out at once. Access to prime location or otherwise What kind of services you want to offer: initially and in the medium term You need to define the vision for your business which will influence your strategy. If I were in your shoes, I wouldn't think of starting a detailing business if I cannot break-even within the first quarter. The biggest challenge in the detailing business is retaining talent. Most of these guys get paid anywhere between 8 - 12k + commission, per car. The supervisor level guys get paid around 15k - 20k. I hardly see any of them last more than a year at the same place.

Here's what BHPian nkrishnap had to say on the matter:

Cost of setting up a detailing studio depends on the below. Capital expenditure Rental deposit, if the place is not owned. Cost of the place and rent will be dependent on locality/location, sq ft area, no of bays you want to have etc. Infrastructure related to presentation of the studio. Electricals, lighting, plug points, machinery, etc. For example a good steam washer (automotive purpose one) will cost at least a couple of lakhs. Other machines such as vacuum cleaner, polishing machines etc. All of these are available from a low price to high price. Example, Karcher dry ice machine mrp is around 22 lakhs. Marketing and Human resources cost. Putting in infrastructure, because personnel hiring does cost you now a days even though it is a blue collar job. Digital marketing services can turn out to be expensive too. All depends on how you are approaching it. Fixed Expenses Fixed costs Rent Salaries - depends on the skill set. Cheap untrained ones come for 12 to 15k and trained ones for 25k Electricity Water charges and other sundry expenses. Product & Workmanship There are tonnes of products, not every product will suit the market need. So how you build your services around the available products and differentiate your services is what will get you customers. Stick to practical possibilities than marketing your services as fire proof, scrarch proor, 10H (some folks are claiming 12H too). Do remember you can fool or hide the reality from the customers only for a short term. Long term it will hit you hard. You labour is what gets you customers even if you have the best product. A good product in untrained hands can only do so much. I have seen certified detailers unable to extract 3 months life from a top notch ceramic coating whereas even a basic coating can outlast the durability of such certified coating (when done by a trained hand) from these certified detailers. Do not compromise here. Tricky question. Investment vs returns. You need to look at pricing your services with complete consideration of your investment and how quickly you want the returns. Note: Going low prices not necessarily will bring volumes. Also get into it only if: You are passionate about the work you would do. Willingness to get your hands dirty, learn the job and master it. Loads of patience dealing with the blue-collar folks. It is easier said than done. They will leave you high and dry when you least expect it. Do this only if you can sustain for a long term. Short term you will lose money.

Here's what BHPian AJ56 had to say on the matter:

As someone who operates a detailing business in Gurgaon, let me try and answer each question to the best of my ability and knowledge. Taking my own case as a point of reference, for a 1500 sq.ft 4 bay + customer lounge set up in Delhi-NCR you’re looking at around 30-35L. This is all inclusive of interiors (major cost) + equipment + chemicals + insurance and brand and logo copywriting. Salaries and marketing will be extra on a monthly basis obviously. You can lower this cost significantly by a few lakhs if you decide on a smaller 2 bay set up but I wouldn’t recommend that as you’ll lose business eventually as you’ll always be short of space and will have to turn customers away due to a lack of free space. Demand is very non-linear and some days you may get 1 car and other days you might get 8. Most needed things: High quality pressure washer (min. 120 bar) with a healthy flow rate and an attachment for cleaning the vehicles underbody. Make sure you have a smaller back up pressure washer in case the main fails. Water softener or water filtration system to ensure water being fed to the pressure washer is free of contaminants that can harm paint due to the pressure. (We use an RO system with indoor tanks at our centre) Air Blower for drying, preferably electric as there’s no risk of oil droplets being mixed in with the air like with some oil based air compressors. Industrial grade wet + dry vacuums with a healthy tank volume, upholstery extractor for dry cleaning. Ideally have 2 vacuums as you don’t want workflow to be interrupted due to a failure. A combination of rotary and orbital paint polishers (actual number will depend on number of workers you have) and at the minimum 2 orbital sanders for removing heavier defects/orange peel. Great lighting, will consist of led roof and wall lights, focus and spot lights in your detailing bay and powerful handheld flashlights for checking the paint during and after correction. Detailing trolleys/brushes/sprayers/wash mitts/buckets/foam pads/etc. High quality chemicals, I won’t go into specifics but depending on your market positioning and pricing you should have a combination of shampoos, compounds, polishes, trim dressings, sandpapers of varying grits, etc. most brands like 3M, Capro, Meguiars, Gyeon will have detailer bulk pricing available. Ceramic coatings + PPF is upto you, can definitely start with coatings as the learning curve for actual application isn’t steep. Paint thickness gauge, you can get a cheap one for 9-10k on Amazon which will work well enough and give accurate paint thickness readings, this is critical if you want to check if a panel has been repainted or before attempting any moderate to heavy paint correction, as you want to know how much clearcoat you’re shaving off during a correction. PPE and Safety - nitrile gloves, dust masks + respirators for ceramic coating, protective eye glasses, rubber boots (for wash bay), fire extinguishers at every corner of the shop, security cameras with night vision, emergency light in case of power failure, alarm system at the shutters entrance points (since high end cars are left overnight during some jobs) Power backup - we have a generator that is used almost every day when the power is cut, unless you’re in a city with zero power cuts, this is absolutely essential. Rent or buy is upto you. For good to have you can include an air compressor and steamer although we hardly find use for them at our centre and they’re strictly optional. Make sure your compressor has a large enough tank otherwise it’ll keep cutting in and out every time you use it. You can also get a roof rail system for the pressure washer hoses but it’s not essential, chemical dilution machines again, optional. Dry ice cleaning machines are expensive and require safety training before use, wouldn’t recommend for a new detailing shop just starting out. Regarding IR lamps for quicker curing of coatings, not needed in my opinion as newer coatings do need it and you anyway should be leaving the car overnight before delivering it to the customer. Assuming it’s a new brand (not a franchise) and your service is top notch, you’re looking at roughly 1 year, can be a few months before or after depending on your monthly cost of operation. Your rent and salaries will be the main cost heads, chemicals should never exceed 10% of your total monthly cost of operation. It takes time to build a loyal customer base, I took 10 months for my first centre to break even before I opened the second, which took 6 months since I had a base by then, always remember repeat customers are much more profitable than new ones. Avoid spending too much on marketing initially as word of mouth is the most powerful and consistent method of acquiring new customers. One more thing, know that like with any business it takes a lot of effort and time (and money) to set up and operate, you’ll be working 9-10 hours, 6 days a week for a year but the rewards at the end will be well worth it. Educate yourself first before investing anything on the basics of detailing and then work your way up to higher levels, there’s boatloads of great information on detailing channels on YouTube, follow them. Feel free to message me if you have any further questions, happy to help. Good luck!

What is an Auto Repair Business Plan?

A business plan provides a snapshot of your auto repair business as it stands today, and lays out your growth plan for the next five years. It explains your business goals and your strategy for reaching them. It also includes market research to support your plans.

Why You Need a Business Plan for a Auto Repair Business

If you’re looking to start an auto repair business, or grow your existing auto repair business, you need a business plan. A business plan will help you raise funding, if needed, and plan out the growth of your auto repair business in order to improve your chances of success. Your auto repair business plan is a living document that should be updated annually as your company grows and changes.

Sources of Funding for Auto Repair Businesses

With regards to funding, the main sources of funding for an auto repair business are personal savings, credit cards, bank loans and angel investors. With regards to bank loans, banks will want to review your business plan and gain confidence that you will be able to repay your loan and interest. To acquire this confidence, the loan officer will not only want to confirm that your financials are reasonable, but they will also want to see a professional plan. Such a plan will give them the confidence that you can successfully and professionally operate a business. Personal savings is the other most common form of funding for an auto repair business.

Finish Your Business Plan Today!

If you want to start an auto repair business or expand your current one, you need a business plan. Below are links to each section of your auto repair business plan template:

Executive Summary

Your executive summary provides an introduction to your mechanic shop business plan, but it is normally the last section you write because it provides a summary of each key section of your plan.

The goal of your Executive Summary is to quickly engage the reader. Explain to them the type of auto repair business you are operating and the status. For example, are you a startup, do you have an auto repair business that you would like to grow, or are you operating a chain of auto repair businesses?

Next, provide an overview of each of the subsequent sections of your plan. For example, give a brief overview of the auto repair industry. Discuss the type of auto repair business you are operating. Detail your direct competitors. Give an overview of your target customers. Provide a snapshot of your marketing plan. Identify the key members of your team. And offer an overview of your financial plan.

Company Analysis

In your company analysis, you will detail the type of auto repair business you are operating.

For example, you might operate one of the following types of auto repair businesses:

  • Auto Service Shop : this type of auto repair business focuses on routine servicing of cars and trucks, such as oil changes and tire rotation.
  • Transmission Repair Shop: this type of business focuses on maintenancing, diagnosing and repairing transmissions in all types of cars.
  • Body Repair Shop: this type of repair shop focuses on repairing damage to the body of a vehicle, primarily cosmetic damage due to collision.

In addition to explaining the type of auto repair business you will operate, the Company Analysis section of your business plan needs to provide background on the business.

Include answers to question such as:

  • When and why did you start the business?
  • What milestones have you achieved to date? Milestones could include the number of customers served, number of positive reviews, amount of monthly revenue, etc.
  • Your legal structure. Are you incorporated as an S-Corp? An LLC? A sole proprietorship? Explain your legal structure here.

Industry Analysis

In your industry analysis, you need to provide an overview of the auto repair industry.

While this may seem unnecessary, it serves multiple purposes.

First, researching the auto repair industry educates you. It helps you understand the market in which you are operating.

Secondly, market research can improve your strategy, particularly if your research identifies market trends.

The third reason for market research is to prove to readers that you are an expert in your industry. By conducting the research and presenting it in your plan, you achieve just that.

The following questions should be answered in the industry analysis section of your automotive business plan:

  • How big is the auto repair industry (in dollars)?
  • Is the market declining or increasing?
  • Who are the key competitors in the market?
  • Who are the key suppliers in the market?
  • What trends are affecting the industry?
  • What is the industry’s growth forecast over the next 5 – 10 years?
  • What is the relevant market size? That is, how big is the potential market for your auto repair business? You can extrapolate such a figure by assessing the size of the market in the entire country and then applying that figure to your local population.

Customer Analysis

The customer analysis section of your mechanic business plan must detail the customers you serve and/or expect to serve.

The following are examples of customer segments: car owners, truck owners, luxury vehicle owners, classic vehicle owners, and businesses that own vehicles such as car rentals, car dealers, delivery businesses, and repairmen.

As you can imagine, the customer segment(s) you choose will have a great impact on the type of auto repair business you operate. Clearly, luxury vehicle owners would respond to different marketing promotions than truck owners, for example.

Try to break out your target customers in terms of their demographic and psychographic profiles. With regards to demographics, include a discussion of the ages, genders, locations and income levels of the customers you seek to serve. Because most auto repair businesses primarily serve customers living in their same city or town, such demographic information is easy to find on government websites.

Psychographic profiles explain the wants and needs of your target customers. The more you can understand and define these needs, the better you will do in attracting and retaining your customers.

With Growthink’s Ultimate Business Plan Template you can finish your plan in just 8 hours or less!

Competitive Analysis

Your competitive analysis should identify the indirect and direct competitors your business faces and then focus on the latter.

Direct competitors are other auto repair businesses.

Indirect competitors are other options that customers have to choose from that aren’t direct competitors. This includes auto parts stores (for DIY repair). You need to mention such competition as well.

With regards to direct competition, you want to describe the other auto repair businesses with which you compete. Most likely, your direct competitors will be auto repairs located very close to your location.

For each such competitor, provide an overview of their businesses and document their strengths and weaknesses. Unless you once worked at your competitors’ businesses, it will be impossible to know everything about them. But you should be able to find out key things about them such as:

  • What types of customers do they serve?
  • What types of vehicles do they maintenance and repair, or what types of maintenance and repairs do they offer?
  • What is their pricing (premium, low, etc.)?
  • What are they good at?
  • What are their weaknesses?

With regards to the last two questions, think about your answers from the customers’ perspective. And don’t be afraid to ask your competitors’ customers what they like most and least about them.

The final part of your competitive analysis section is to document your areas of competitive advantage. For example:

  • Will you provide better maintenance and repair services?
  • Will you provide services that your competitors don’t offer?
  • Will you provide better customer service?
  • Will you offer better pricing?

Think about ways you will outperform your competition and document them in this section of your plan.

Marketing Plan

Traditionally, a marketing plan includes the four P’s: Product, Price, Place, and Promotion. For a car service business plan, your marketing plan should include the following:

Product : In the product section, you should reiterate the type of auto repair company that you documented in your Company Analysis. Then, detail the specific products you will be offering. For example, in addition to auto repair, will you provide car rental services, repair financing or any other services?

Price : Document the prices you will offer and how they compare to your competitors. Essentially in the product and price sub-sections of your marketing plan, you are presenting the services you offer and their prices.

Place : Place refers to the location of your auto repair company. Document your location and mention how the location will impact your success. For example, is your auto repair business located in a busy retail district, industrial area, etc. Discuss how your location might be the ideal location for your customers.

Promotions : The final part of your auto repair marketing plan is the promotions section. Here you will document how you will drive customers to your location(s). The following are some promotional methods you might consider:

  • Advertising in local papers and magazines
  • Reaching out to local websites
  • Social media marketing
  • Local radio advertising

Operations Plan

While the earlier sections of your business plan explained your goals, your operations plan describes how you will meet them. Your operations plan should have two distinct sections as follows.

Everyday short-term processes include all of the tasks involved in running your auto repair business, including speaking with vehicle owners in person or on the phone, maintenancing and repairing vehicles.

Long-term goals are the milestones you hope to achieve. These could include the dates when you expect to repair your 50th car, or when you hope to reach $X in revenue. It could also be when you expect to expand your auto repair business to a new city.

Management Team

To demonstrate your auto repair business’ ability to succeed, a strong management team is essential. Highlight your key players’ backgrounds, emphasizing those skills and experiences that prove their ability to grow a company.

Ideally you and/or your team members have direct experience in managing auto repair businesses. If so, highlight this experience and expertise. But also highlight any experience that you think will help your business succeed.

If your team is lacking, consider assembling an advisory board. An advisory board would include 2 to 8 individuals who would act like mentors to your business. They would help answer questions and provide strategic guidance. If needed, look for advisory board members with experience in managing auto repair shops or successfully running small businesses.

Financial Plan

Your financial plan should include your 5-year financial statement broken out both monthly or quarterly for the first year and then annually. Your financial statements include your income statement, balance sheet and cash flow statements.

Income Statement : an income statement is more commonly called a Profit and Loss statement or P&L. It shows your revenues and then subtracts your costs to show whether you turned a profit or not.

In developing your income statement, you need to devise assumptions. For example, how many cars will you repair per week? And will sales grow by 2% or 10% per year? As you can imagine, your choice of assumptions will greatly impact the financial forecasts for your business. As much as possible, conduct research to try to root your assumptions in reality.

Balance Sheets : Balance sheets show your assets and liabilities. While balance sheets can include much information, try to simplify them to the key items you need to know about. For instance, if you spend $50,000 on building out your auto repair business, this will not give you immediate profits. Rather it is an asset that will hopefully help you generate profits for years to come. Likewise, if a bank writes you a check for $50,000, you don’t need to pay it back immediately. Rather, that is a liability you will pay back over time.

Cash Flow Statement : Your cash flow statement will help determine how much money you need to start or grow your business, and make sure you never run out of money. What most entrepreneurs and business owners don’t realize is that you can turn a profit but run out of money and go bankrupt.

In developing your Income Statement and Balance Sheets be sure to include several of the key costs needed in starting or growing an auto repair business:

  • Location build-out including design fees, construction, etc.
  • Cost of equipment and supplies
  • Payroll or salaries paid to staff
  • Business insurance
  • Taxes and permits
  • Legal expenses

Attach your full financial projections in the appendix of your plan along with any supporting documents that make your plan more compelling. For example, you might include your shop location lease or descriptions of repairs you are working on.   Summary Putting together a business plan for your auto repair business is a worthwhile endeavor. If you follow the template above, by the time you are done, you will truly be an expert. You will really understand the auto repair industry, your competition, and your customers. You will have developed a marketing plan and will really understand what it takes to launch and grow a successful auto repair business.

F & R Auto offers a wide range of services as outlined in the detailed sections below. It is ultimately the goal of the company to offer a one-stop facility for all auto servicing needs, including brakes, transmission, wheel alignment, etc. In this way the company can offer greater perceived value for the customer than many other shops which specialize in certain areas.

The industry is highly competitive with suppliers having a great deal of power in setting and negotiating the prices of their products and services to repair shops. In addition, because the customers see the service as undifferentiated and a “commodity” with little value separation between competitors, buyer power is also very high. Finally, the barriers to entry are moderately low, and the large number of competitors in this field, including substitutes (such as do-it-yourself work) mean that the pricing for such services are very competitive. The only way to have an advantage in this industry is a low cost leadership principal applied aggressively or to create higher switching costs through the building of strong business to customer ties.

F & R Auto will hire trained and certified mechanics who are able to prove they have superior customer awareness and interaction. It is the company’s professional people who will fulfill the firm’s contracts and goals. The largest part of the company’s expenses will be in labor costs.

3.1 Service Description

F & R Auto provides a wide range of auto repair services. These include:

  • Scheduled maintenance.
  • Wheel alignments, tires and rims.
  • Brake repair.
  • Comprehensive engine repair.
  • Transmission.

Each job or project will be on a reservation basis, although we will accept a small percentage of drive in repair work.

3.2 Competitive Comparison

The auto repair industry is highly competitive. Each company within this field has high capital costs, low margins, and a high intensity of competition.

Suppliers have a great deal of power in setting and negotiating the prices of their products and services to repair shops. This is due to the fact that the suppliers who absorb the greatest amounts of cash from repair shops are large auto part companies. These companies are more consolidated that the repair industry, have deeper pockets, an almost limitless number of substitute customers, and finally they are the single most important supplier to F & R’s industry. Therefore, these companies can set whatever price they wish to. Furthermore, labor is a supplier in this industry as well, and salaries for such individuals are well known and not very flexible.

In addition, because the customers see the service as undifferentiated and a “commodity” with little value separation between competitors (if they offer a suitable level of quality) buyer power is also very high. Additionally, the costs of our services are not cheap, and buyers are willing to search for the most favorable combination of price and acceptable service.

The barriers to entry and exit are moderately low in this industry. Switching costs are virtually non-existent and the costs to entry and exist the market are low. The large number of competitors in this field including substitutes mean that the pricing for such services are very competitive. The only way to have an advantage in this industry is a low cost leadership principal applied aggressively to all aspects of the business or to build up customer relations to a point where the switching costs are raised.

3.3 Technology

The technological revolution in computers has enhanced our abilities to diagnose and repair our clients vehicles. F &R will remain on the cutting edge by instituting the use of computer diagnostic equipment in its shop. The company will continue to seek new ways to provide a better service through technology.

3.4 Future Services

The company does not have any plans to create further services at this time.

4.2 Service Business Analysis

This section is covered in the Competitive Comparison section of the Plan.

4.2.1 Competition and Buying Patterns

While many customers looking to purchase automotive repair services are concerned with price, the primary concern is with building a relationship of trust between themselves and their service provider. A large number of people within the country have experienced or heard of bad service encounters within this market. As a person’s car is usually connected in one way or another with that individual’s livelihood, a dependable automobile is crucial. Therefore, many clients are willing to pay a little more for a mechanic they feel does a quality job and understands their needs.

An automotive repair company that can anticipate, meet, and even exceed customer’s needs can build a defensible position within the market place and acquire market share at the expense of other rivals.

4.2.2 Main Competitors

As stated before, the automotive repair market is very fragmented. The chief competitors in this industry for F & R are the high quality automobile dealerships and licensed service reps. This includes Toyota, Ford, Chrysler, and other major brand names. Within F & R’s immediate service vicinity, There is Rodham’s Toyota, Lester Ford and Woodmark’s Chrysler dealerships. Each of these direct competitors have a service facility. These competitors dominate the market place, have the largest market share, and have advantages such as specially trained personnel, access to lower priced parts and tools, and deep pockets. The other competitors are mostly “mom & pop” style outfits that make up the majority of the competition. For F & R this includes Dave’s Auto Repair, The Taller Mechanico, Kirkland Auto and Body, and Vancouver Auto. The advantages of these firms is that they can seek a low cost leadership strategy due to lower personnel costs. However, they have a much more fluid customer base and higher customer turnover.

F & R will seek to compete initially in the low cost strategy. At the same time, it will seek to provide a higher level of customer satisfaction by having more rigorous quality control and seeking ways to enhance the entire service experience (not just repairing a person’s car). In this way it will lock in a loyal customer base who value the client-service provider relationship.

4.2.3 Business Participants

The auto repair industry is highly fragmented. In fact, there are so many small providers that any company in this industry is facing a purely competitive environment. It is very difficult to create a differentiation, or niche, strategy in this environment and until F & R is able to establish a reputation for quality, on time, superior customer service, the company will seek a low cost role. Once it has achieved what management believes to be a sufficient reputation for its services along with a profitable customer base, the company plans to leverage this advantage into a differentiation strategy that will be able to charge more for its services.

Strategy and Implementation Summary

The following section outlines the company’s strategic focus in growing the business.

5.1 Competitive Edge

F & R Auto’s competitive edge lies in the vision of its partners, who understand better than many of their rivals that a service visit does not just include repairing a client’s car, it includes the entire service experience from the first time a client talks to their mechanic until they decide to stop driving. The long-term profitability of a service firm of this type lies in the repeat customer that finds F & R’s services an excellent experience, DESPITE the fact that they usually have suffered a inconvenient breakdown. The company will seek to examine ALL aspects of the service experience to seek ways to improve its customer satisfaction. In addition, all employees will be rigorously trained and retrained to think about customer satisfaction in order to create a self-sustaining company culture that revolves around this issue.

5.1.1 Positioning Statement

It is the express purpose of F & R to become the local leader in quality and service experience of all the small (non-dealerships) automotive repair firms within the Seattle area while maintaining a low cost plan. Once a reputation for quality and service experience is created, and an ongoing network of referrals is bringing in new business, the company plans to re-evaluate its strategy and positioning within the market to see if a differentiation strategy is viable. If so, this will allow the company to raise prices and increase profit margins in relation to its rivals. This in turn is expected to leverage long-term growth until F & R can reach a regional scope of operations.

5.2 Marketing Strategy

The company has a modest program of marketing its services that include the following:

  • Direct mailers.
  • Newspaper ads.
  • Yellow pages.
  • Referrals through other local businesses.

Each of these marketing approaches has the advantage of being low cost and creating service awareness. The company’s long-term marketing goals are to use local radio and TV ads similar to the Les Schwab Tire Center ads.

The company is also investigating the possibility of having a grand opening program that would feature discounts, food, a local radio disc jockey, and other promotional ideas.

5.2.1 Promotion Strategy

The principal owners of F & R Auto expect that a significant number of their pre-existing clients (where Ford and Ronald currently work) will desire to switch to F & R Auto to retain the services of their personal mechanics. This will provide a sufficient income until F & R can build up a reputation and see its marketing program take effect.

This promotion strategy will take the form of flyers, direct mailers, price discounts, and advertisements in newspapers and yellow pages. F & R does not desire to spend a large amount on marketing until the firm is ready to expand either into new facilities or open up new ones. It is estimated this will occur sometime after year five.

5.2.2 Pricing Strategy

F & R Auto exists in a purely competitive environment where each firm must be a price taker. In other words, the firm has no ability to affect the market price of its services, regardless of how many automobiles it repairs. In this case, therefore, marginal revenue (the revenue incurred by producing or servicing one more unit) is equal to the price charged. Furthermore, because the demand curve is essentially horizontal, F & R can service automobiles at total capacity without effecting the price.

5.3 Sales Forecast

Since the automotive repair industry is, operationally, a job-shop environment, it is somewhat difficult to estimate sales. For job-shops, each individual product or service is tailored or unique to that job, and is only initiated once an order is made. However, the sales forecast reflect the professional opinion of Mr. Ford in how much sales he will make based on the following assumptions:

  • The number of clients Ford and Ronald can attract from their previous companies.
  • The effect of planned promotions and word-of-mouth marketing.
  • Current prices and costs of doing business.
  • The types of automobiles and jobs that will occur in every month.

For the most part, sales for an automobile repair firm are steady year round and reflect little seasonality.

The table and charts below outline the sales forecast.  Three years of annual sales and costs of sales are shown.  Twelve monthly tallies are included in the appendices.

7.5 Business Ratios

The Business ratios give an overall idea of how profitable and at what risk level F & R Auto will operate at. The ratio table gives both time series analysis and cross-sectional analysis by including industry average ratios. As can be seen from the comparison between industry standards and F&R’s own ratios, there is some differences. Most of these are due to the fact that there is a very large variance in assets, liabilities, financing, and net income between companies in this industry due to the vast differences in company size.

Overall the company’s projections show a company that faces the usual risks of companies in this industry and one that will be profitable in the long-run. The company shows that it has higher SG&A costs than other competitors, however management has deliberately overstated costs and minimized profits in order to create a “safe” or “buffer” zone in case of hard times or other unforeseeable problems. Pre-tax return on net worth and pre-tax return on assets appears to be very high, especially within the first two years, however this is due to the fact that the company will be operating with fewer assets than most companies in the first few years until it can build up enough cash to acquire the tools and facilities that are desired and go beyond the “adequate” level.

Repair of an old broken car at auto service

The automotive workshop ecosystem in India is a complex and multifaceted network of people, businesses, and organisations that work together to ensure that vehicles are repaired and maintained to a high standard in the country. This ecosystem includes a wide range of different components and stakeholders, all of which play a vital role in the functioning and success of automotive workshops in India.

Automotive workshops are a critical component of the automotive industry, as they provide the necessary services to keep vehicles in good working order and ensure that they are safe to operate on the road. In addition to providing repair and maintenance services, automotive workshops may also play a role in training technicians and apprentices. Many workshops have programmes in place to train and develop the skills of their technicians, helping to ensure that they are up-to-date on the latest technologies and techniques in the automotive industry.

The automotive workshop ecosystem includes a wide range of different components and stakeholders, including:

l Automotive technicians: Automotive technicians are the skilled professionals who work in automotive workshops, performing repairs and maintenance tasks on vehicles. They may be specialised in a particular area, such as mechanical repairs, electrical work, or body repairs. To become an automotive technician, individuals typically need to complete a formal training programme, which may be offered through a trade school, community college, or technical institute. Automotive Skill Development Council (ASDC) offers a range of skill training programmes, including short-term courses, long-term courses, and apprenticeship programmes.

l Automotive workshop owners and managers: Automotive workshop owners and managers are responsible for running and managing the day-to-day operations of an automotive workshop. This may include hiring technicians, managing budgets, and overseeing the overall quality of the work being performed. Workshop owners and managers may also be responsible for marketing the business to attract new customers, as well as building relationships with suppliers and other stakeholders in the automotive industry.

l Automotive parts suppliers: In order to perform repairs and maintenance tasks, automotive technicians in India rely on a steady supply of parts and components. These are provided by automotive parts suppliers, who may offer OEM (original equipment manufacturer) parts, aftermarket parts, or both. OEM parts are made by the same manufacturer that built the vehicle, while aftermarket parts are produced by third-party companies. Automotive parts suppliers in India work closely with workshops to ensure that they have a steady supply of the parts that they need to perform repairs and maintenance tasks.

l Vehicle owners: Very important part of the automotive workshop ecosystem in India are the vehicle owners who bring their vehicles in for repairs and maintenance. These may be private individuals or commercial fleet operators, and they rely on the services of automotive workshops to keep their vehicles in good working order. Vehicle owners in India typically have a range of different options when it comes to selecting a workshop, and they may choose a workshop based on factors such as location, price, and reputation.

l Automotive industry organisations: The automotive workshop ecosystem in India also includes several professional organisations that represent the interests of the automotive industry, including workshops. Examples of these organisations include the All-India Automobile Workshop Association (AIAWA) and the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India (ACMA) . These organisations work to promote the interests of the automotive industry in India and provide support and resources to workshops and technicians.

l Automotive manufacturers: Automotive manufacturers are another key component of the automotive workshop ecosystem in India. These are the companies that design and build vehicles, and they often work closely with workshops to provide training and technical support, as well as to offer warranties and other services. Some of the major automotive manufacturers operating in India include Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, and Mahindra & Mahindra. These companies have a significant presence in the Indian market and play a significant role in the development of the automotive industry in the country.

l Government agencies: Automotives Workshop ecosystem also includes a range of government agencies that are responsible for regulating the industry and enforcing safety and environmental regulations. These agencies may be responsible for issuing licenses and certifications to automotive workshops and technicians, as well as conducting inspections to ensure that they are operating in compliance with the law. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is the primary government agency responsible for regulating the automotive industry in India.

ASDC 05 1

Market size of Automotive Workshops

The market size of the automotive workshop industry in India is difficult to quantify with a single number, as it depends on a wide range of factors such as the size of the vehicle fleet, the demand for repairs and maintenance services, and the number of automotive workshops operating in the country. However, the automotive industry in India is a significant contributor to the economy, and it is likely that the automotive workshop industry plays a significant role in this sector.

According to data from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) , the automotive industry in India contributed 7.5% to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). This includes the contribution of the automotive workshop industry, as well as other sectors such as vehicle manufacturing, parts manufacturing, and sales and distribution. In terms of the number of vehicles on the road in India, the country has a large and growing fleet. According to data from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, released by PIB in July 2022, there are a total of 13,34,385 electric vehicles and 27,81,69,631 non-electric vehicles in use in India. This includes a wide range of vehicles, including cars, trucks, buses, and motorcycles. As the number of vehicles on the road in India continues to increase, it is likely that the demand for automotive workshop services will also increase.

Why Workshop Ecosystem is Required in India?

In India, as in other countries, vehicles are a vital mode of transportation for individuals and businesses. They are used for a wide range of purposes, including commuting, transporting goods, and providing transportation services. To keep these vehicles in good working order and to ensure that they are safe to operate, they need to be regularly repaired and maintained. There are several reasons why the automotive workshop ecosystem is important in India:

l   To meet the demand for repairs and maintenance: There is a high demand for automotive repairs and maintenance in India, as the country has a large population and a growing middle class that is increasingly able to afford to own and operate vehicles. Automotive workshops provide a place for vehicles to be repaired and maintained, helping to ensure that they are operating safely and efficiently on the road.

ASDC 03 1

l To support the growth of the automotive industry: The automotive industry is a key contributor to the Indian economy, and the workshop ecosystem plays a vital role in supporting its growth. Automotive workshops provide employment opportunities and generate revenue, which helps to drive the overall growth of the industry.

l To promote the development of skills: The automotive workshop ecosystem provides opportunities for individuals to develop the skills needed to work in the industry. This includes providing training and certification programmes, as well as apprenticeship opportunities, which help to ensure that the industry has a skilled and qualified workforce.

l To improve safety and environmental standards: Automotive workshops play a role in ensuring that vehicles are operating safely and in compliance with environmental regulations. This helps to reduce the risk of accidents and protect the environment, which are important considerations in a country with a large and growing population. Role of ASDC in Automotive Workshop Ecosystem

The automotive workshop ecosystem is an important part of the automotive industry in India, as it helps to support the growth of the industry, provide employment opportunities, and ensure that vehicles are operating safely and efficiently on the road. The Automotive Skill Development Council (ASDC) is an Indian government-supported organisation that was established to promote the development of skills in the automotive sector. The ASDC offers a range of skill training programmes, including short-term courses, long-term courses, and apprenticeship programmes.

ASDC offers a total of 50 job roles in the manufacturing sector, 13 job roles in research and development, 10 job roles in road transportation, 11 job roles in sales, and 26 job roles in service. These QPs are designed to provide individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in various roles within the automotive industry, including roles in manufacturing, production, design, engineering, repair and maintenance, and sales and service. The ASDC also offers certification programmes for individuals who want to demonstrate their skills and knowledge to potential employers.

ASDC 02 1

Future of Automotive Workshop Ecosystem

The future of the automotive workshop industry in India is expected to be shaped by a few factors, including technological advancements, changes in consumer preferences, and shifts in the regulatory environment.

One major trend that is likely to shape the future of the automotive workshop industry in India is the increasing adoption of electric vehicles (EVs). As the popularity of EVs grows, automotive workshops will need to be equipped to handle the maintenance and repair of these vehicles, which may require specialised training and equipment. This could lead to a shift in the types of services that automotive workshops offer, as well as the skills and expertise of their technicians.

Another trend that is likely to impact the automotive workshop industry in India is the increasing use of digital technologies. Workshops are already starting to adopt technologies such as diagnostic tools, online booking platforms, and customer management systems to improve efficiency and enhance the customer experience. How To Start A Car Detailing Business In India!

Industry estimates peg the Indian car servicing industry anywhere between Rs. 20,000 to 30,000 Crore annually. The rapidly growing presence and the arrival of big car brands in India are driving the Indian car market towards becoming a world leader in the coming years.

  • So, if you’re wishing to start a Business in the Automobile Sector, We say, it’s a Great Business Plan.
  • As per the recent market trends, Car Detailing Business is one of the most promising & profitable businesses to start in India.
  • Before we talk further about How to start up a Car Detailing Business, Let’s begin by understanding what Car Detailing actually is.

What Exactly is Car Detailing?

Well, many people think that Car washing and Car Detailing are one and the same thing. That’s where they go wrong. Detailing a Car goes beyond a normal Car wash. Car Detailing is an overall cleaning and polishing of the car to its minutest detail. Car Detailing involves detailed touch-ups to repair the Car’s paintwork and its overall look.

The aim of this is to restore the paintwork by eliminating scratches or swirl marks to make the car look almost brand new like it did when you first drove it out of the showroom.

Car Detailing is divided into two parts: Exterior Detailing and Interior Detailing.

how-to-start-a-car-detailing-business-in-india

1. Exterior Car Detailing

Exterior Car Detailing includes washing, degreasing, claying, Paint Correction (sanding, compounding, polishing), Paint Protection (Ceramic Coating, Wax, PPF, etc.), and more by using specialized tools, machines, and products. The different parts of the car (paint, windshield, tires, etc.) are detailed using a specific process and specialized products.

2. Interior Car Detailing

Interior Car Detailing is deep cleaning the interior parts of the car by vacuuming, brushing, steam cleaning, Leather conditioning, carpet cleaning, and finally applying some dressing to protect the surfaces.

In Brief, Car Detailing means giving the Car a total facelift to the extent that it looks as good as new.

Now, let’s come to our main topic, ‘How to start a Car detailing business in India?

Starting your own car detailing business can be a challenge. This is even more challenging in India because the industry is fairly new and complicated.

Well, no need to worry about it; here are the necessary steps to follow to get your business started.

Get Trained – Do a Professional Detailing Course:

Detailing isn’t an industry that requires you to have a four-year degree or any specific certification in order to get started. But in order to be a Successful Detailer, you do need to know techniques and methods, as well as the business side of the Industry.

Just like buying the best bat in the world won’t teach you how to play a cover drive, buying the best polishing machines is not sufficient if you want to bring a flawless finish to a car. You need to first learn the technique and then practice.

In India, Autofresh Detailing Academy is a Certified Car Detailing Training Institute. The chief trainer, Mr. Anckur Sama, has been an IDA Certified & Skills Verified detailer since 2008 and has been in the Auto Detailing industry for over 14 years. The courses offered are hands-on training courses meant to train budding detailers on the art and science of car detailing.

You can also explore this online course we have created which aims to give you an overview of the detailing industry, target audience, budgeting, studio layout, pricing of services, and other important topics you should know before deciding to enter the industry.

Practice to Improve and Become a Professional Detailer:

Just reading online articles or watching some internet videos is not really going to make you an excellent Car detailer unless you Practice and try it on your own. The best way to practice Car Detailing is with your own vehicle. You may also ask a neighbour or friend if they wish to get their Car details from you.  Ask them to give you an honest review of your work. This helps you to understand your grey areas and skills in Detailing. Work to eliminate any grey areas and develop your strengths further.

Even if you are not planning on detailing cars yourself and are looking to hire workers, you NEED to know the products, processes, and techniques.

Find a Good Location:

Unless you want to be a mobile detailer, you need a good location for a detailing studio. Make sure the location permits easy in-out of cars. You should also check for the drainage system, water TDS, electricity connection, etc., and make sure it’s suitable for detailing cars.

Invest in the Essentials Tools & Equipment:

It is an important step to know exactly where to invest and which products are necessary for your start-up Business. Of Course, it is possible to spend more if you wish to start out as a larger operation, but generally, it’s not an especially expensive industry to break into. Take some advice from an experienced detailer to know exactly which tools and products you should buy for a start-up Business.

To buy Detailing products at wholesale prices, visit our website Autofresh India. Our support team will help you choose products according to your needs.

Hire & Train Manpower:

Any business needs employees. Even if you are planning to work on cars yourself, you still need additional help to service more cars simultaneously. And don’t fret. YOU DON’T NECESSARILY NEED TRAINED MANPOWER. Yes, you don’t. Most trained workers have a set way of operating and are comfortable with older technologies. With the advent of next-gen Dual Action machines, detailing is very different than it was. Get trained, hire employees, train them, and set your own process that achieves desired results and delivers quality consistently.

Advertise your Detailing Business:

Show your work on social media. We can’t stress this enough. Consumer awareness about car detailing is very low in India. Educate them on the processes you follow and why they need your services.

If you are able to deliver quality and create trust, you don’t just have a customer for life but you will reap the benefits of word-of-mouth publicity too. You should actually list your business on Google and request Google reviews from customers.

You can also promote your services with seasonal discounts and offers.

Grow More When You’re Doing Well:  As your business grows, you might find it beneficial to make some further investments.  You may want to expand your business area so that you can work on more cars. You may also want to hire more team members to expand your operations. You may consider offering pick-up – and drop-off facilities as well.

Also, you should create your own website with “Call to action” buttons to generate more leads.

GOLDEN ADVICE: Acquiring new customers is always more expensive than retaining existing customers.

80% of a detailing studio’s sales come from existing customers coming back. So, focus on providing good service to the customer. Don’t cut corners; use good products. And ALWAYS inspect the car properly before delivery.

In Conclusion:  Now that you know how to start a Car Detailing Business, we still recommend starting a Business after getting proper Training as it requires Professional Detailing Skills. Take the recommendation of a professional detailer or products supplier to guide you on which necessary equipment you may need for starting. Look for a good serviceable location to set up the studio. Once you are done with the Business setup, promote your Business to attract more customers.  Marketing will offer you the reward of more customers and more profit, and it will far outweigh the cost of what you put into the Business.

So, we recommend you explore Franchise options in this field. Look for a reputable brand. In India, CarzSpa is one of the biggest brands you can consider partnering with.

Project report for Automobile workshop - Four wheeler

Create your own project report in less than 10 mins., introduction.

India was the fourth-largest car manufacturer in the world in 2020. Indian auto manufacturers produced a record 29.1 million motor vehicles in 2017/20 (Apr-Mar) incl. 4.01 million passenger vehicles. It produced and sold a record four million vehicles (cars, utility vehicles, and vans). The next milestone of five million vehicles might not take that long but is unlikely to happen by 2021, unlike some earlier forecasts. Between March 2013 and March 2020, domestic PV production saw a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.42 percent. Assuming this rate stays for the next few years, it could take another five years to reach five million units. The industry is more optimistic. That is because the CAGR in the past three years has been 7.72 percent. India was projected to become the third-largest PV market by 2020, according to estimates. It stood fifth in 2017 after China, the US, Japan, and Germany. The auto servicing market, currently pegged at Rs. 20,000 crore, is expected to be worth Rs. 33,000-34,000 crore by 2020. The growing number of cars in the market helps the firm to achieve good customers and thus making the project viable.

Product / Services & process

The firm provide the following services :

1.Four wheeler general  services 2. New technology implemented complaints rectification 3. Full engine servicing  using proper company recommended tools 4. Special eletrical ramps gives maximum safety for cars 5. Use only genuine spare sparts 6. Customer call back facility after service 7. Road assistance facility 8. Insurance claim 9  Free customer service 10.Total vehicle inspection and fine tuning

Market potential & Strategy

Everyone is facing an acute scarcity of time, they need a workshop with a pickup and drop facility at your doorsteps at a convenient time and also helping seniors on-road at the time of breakdowns. India, a nation where one can get pizza in just 30 minutes by dialing a call number; but what happens if one’s 4 wheeler encounters trouble on road? We aim to be the troubleshooters. Unfortunately, none were providing these services.

The auto servicing market, currently pegged at Rs. 20,000 crore, is expected to be worth Rs. 33,000-34,000 crore by 2020.The firm provides roadside assistance, pick and drop of two-wheelers at extra charge, quick response for our regular customers, and the unique list goes on. These are the USPs of this firm compare to the normal service garages. The high increase of four-wheeler automobiles increased per capita of individuals, and the adequate public transport system is the supporting factor for the two-wheeler industry as a whole. For any vehicle, it needs special care and service for a while, so the potential is too high. The firm is planning to provide a different customer experience through the service garage.

Hi Octy_Vin, Happy to know that you want to start a workshop. May be the below points can give you a rough idea of what you need and what you wont. 1. Type of workshop: Every workshop has its strength/ USP, so decide if you want to focus on bodyshop only or mechanicals only. In bodyshop margins are big and maintaining quality will be a challenge. In mechanical side, margin/labour is less but quality of work can be easily maintained by being honest in talk, use only genuine spares and strict supervision of workers. In most painting jobs, less than 50% of the overall bill is the material cost, however if your finishing is not good, customer might not pay the whole bill quoted. For mechanicals, roughly 20% is the labour charge, for example: to fit a 1000rupees door pads on M800, minimum labour charge is 200. The same applies to everything else you do. Without this charge, its not feasible to run a garage. There are some people who charge more than that as well. Bodyshops may or may not run well, but mechanical works are sure to fetch good amount of money as business is more regular and although less, income is guaranteed. Garage: Assuming you will employ 4workers (to start with) mainly on mechanicals (regular service, clutch change, etc etc). You should have a garage space that can accomodate 3 full size sedans like Honda City/ Accent (inside compound). Apart from this, you should also have space in front of garage to park about 2 - 3 cars. So that, you can park ready-to-deliver cars outside. This is also a great tool in attracting new customers, cars without bonnets, half painted etc are the actual banners you are putting up. Tools required for garage 1. Hydraulic Jack - 2.5tonnes with a thick pipe to operate them - 1No - NO IDEA 2. Height adjustable horse shoe - the triangle thing that tyre changing shops use - 8nos - 6000/- (max) 3. Rachet kits - 3Nos- with nuts starting from 6size to 32size - 6000/- (max) 4. Torque wrench (a must for all engine works) - 2000/- - 1Nos 5. Ring spanner set 6 - 32size - 2 sets - 2500/- (Chrome Vanadium metal) 6. Open Spanner set (6 - 32 size) - 1000/- - 2 sets 7. + and - Screw drivers - 10Numbers (very lengthy 4nos, very short 2nos, interchangeble type 2nos) – 800/- 8. Metal handle hammers – 3Nos – Big, very big and small – 1200/- 9. Cutting and nose plyers – 4nos – 450/- 10. Old steering rods/ similar solid iron rods – 2Nos – 1000/- 11. Welding tools – 7000/- And many more will be required Bodyshop: If you also plan to do painting side by side, then this is what you need. 1. A fixed 3HP compressor (motor with belt driven) – 5000/- 2. A separate 200litre (or more) gas tank – no idea about price, this tank can also support the single shaft lift used in some water washing centers, can even lift a matador. 3. If you don’t want a lift then, simply spend 12000/- to get a 2.5HP, motor driven compressor (not chinese) with a 60litres tank capacity. 4. Most tools can be powered using compressed air – scrubber, polisher, spray gun etc 5. Guns – professional HVLP (High volume low pressure) guns imported from USA cost about 3500/-, local ones cost about 450/- 6. Underbody coating gun (pitch gun) – 250/- 7. Flexible Pipes from gun to compressor - 700/- 8. A simple, dust free paint booth – 10,000/- (basic structure in 1inch square pipes and plastic transparent sheets to cover entire thing, 4 tube lights, 2 fans) 9. A separate stand to paint mirrors, wheel caps etc (not everything should be painted in the booth). 10. You can outsource tinker jobs as it is very noisy, you need enough sunlight throughout garage to keep the Electricity bills at tap and also painter needs sunlight to work on. Water wash: 1. Motor driven water pump/compressor – 1inch hose connector – 11,000/- 2. L angle, C angle, I angle nozzles – to clean underbody etc without the guy bending much and no need of any lifts. 3. Micro fiber cloth in bulk 4. 5 gallon imported shampoos – for exteriors 5. 5 gallon imported seat fabric shampoo – for interiors and roof 6. Wet and Dry Vaccum pump – 15,000/- 7. You can use paint booth type set up for waxing purpose as well ( don’t switch on fans, use only lights) 8. Dont be surprise if you find 100kilos fine mud opposite to your garage within a month of starting the water wash. So a bigger storm water drain is an added advantage if you have one close to your garage. Liquids on stock: 1. Engine Oil: 100 or 200litres barrel or stick to 5ltrs cans 2. Gear Oil: 10litres can 3. Cotton waste - 20kilos 4. Shampoos and polishes 5. Black and white grease - stick to MGP or similar brand 6. Diesel - 5litres 7. Thinner - NC and PU - 5litres each 8. Brake Oil - 2litres 9. Huge cans to store and sell the used engine oil recovered from the cars 10. Burn the old dirty air filters once in 5months and put the metal parts to scrap guy. 11. Always remember - No tool comes in or goes out of garage, otherwise everymonth you would end up shopping tools alone.. Will check with a few people and give you more figures soon :)

I also spoke to my Tinker person and this is the set up he has. 2helpers, 2tinkers - for all body works. One of the tinkers also does painting. He has space but no paint booth, still manages some how. He also takes care of minor accident cars - full repair. So he has a mechanic who takes care of all parts procuring and mechanical works on cars. Except the mechanic everybody else is employed, the mechanic uses the tinkers premises and works on cars, he charges seperately for his work. The mechanic pays a minimum of 4000/- and max of 7500/- per month as a fee to this tinker. So whether the mechanic gets business of not, electricity bill, food, fuel for two wheeler etc are saved for the tinker.

The world now invests almost twice as much in clean energy as it does in fossil fuels…, global investment in clean energy and fossil fuels, 2015-2024, …but there are major imbalances in investment, and emerging market and developing economies (emde) outside china account for only around 15% of global clean energy spending, annual investment in clean energy by selected country and region, 2019 and 2024, investment in solar pv now surpasses all other generation technologies combined, global annual investment in solar pv and other generation technologies, 2021-2024, the integration of renewables and upgrades to existing infrastructure have sparked a recovery in spending on grids and storage, investment in power grids and storage by region 2017-2024, rising investments in clean energy push overall energy investment above usd 3 trillion for the first time.

Global energy investment is set to exceed USD 3 trillion for the first time in 2024, with USD 2 trillion going to clean energy technologies and infrastructure. Investment in clean energy has accelerated since 2020, and spending on renewable power, grids and storage is now higher than total spending on oil, gas, and coal.

As the era of cheap borrowing comes to an end, certain kinds of investment are being held back by higher financing costs. However, the impact on project economics has been partially offset by easing supply chain pressures and falling prices. Solar panel costs have decreased by 30% over the last two years, and prices for minerals and metals crucial for energy transitions have also sharply dropped, especially the metals required for batteries.

The annual World Energy Investment report has consistently warned of energy investment flow imbalances, particularly insufficient clean energy investments in EMDE outside China. There are tentative signs of a pick-up in these investments: in our assessment, clean energy investments are set to approach USD 320 billion in 2024, up by more 50% since 2020. This is similar to the growth seen in advanced economies (+50%), although trailing China (+75%). The gains primarily come from higher investments in renewable power, now representing half of all power sector investments in these economies. Progress in India, Brazil, parts of Southeast Asia and Africa reflects new policy initiatives, well-managed public tenders, and improved grid infrastructure. Africa’s clean energy investments in 2024, at over USD 40 billion, are nearly double those in 2020.

Yet much more needs to be done. In most cases, this growth comes from a very low base and many of the least-developed economies are being left behind (several face acute problems servicing high levels of debt). In 2024, the share of global clean energy investment in EMDE outside China is expected to remain around 15% of the total. Both in terms of volume and share, this is far below the amounts that are required to ensure full access to modern energy and to meet rising energy demand in a sustainable way.

Power sector investment in solar photovoltaic (PV) technology is projected to exceed USD 500 billion in 2024, surpassing all other generation sources combined. Though growth may moderate slightly in 2024 due to falling PV module prices, solar remains central to the power sector’s transformation. In 2023, each dollar invested in wind and solar PV yielded 2.5 times more energy output than a dollar spent on the same technologies a decade prior.

In 2015, the ratio of clean power to unabated fossil fuel power investments was roughly 2:1. In 2024, this ratio is set to reach 10:1. The rise in solar and wind deployment has driven wholesale prices down in some countries, occasionally below zero, particularly during peak periods of wind and solar generation. This lowers the potential for spot market earnings for producers and highlights the need for complementary investments in flexibility and storage capacity.

Investments in nuclear power are expected to pick up in 2024, with its share (9%) in clean power investments rising after two consecutive years of decline. Total investment in nuclear is projected to reach USD 80 billion in 2024, nearly double the 2018 level, which was the lowest point in a decade.

Grids have become a bottleneck for energy transitions, but investment is rising. After stagnating around USD 300 billion per year since 2015, spending is expected to hit USD 400 billion in 2024, driven by new policies and funding in Europe, the United States, China, and parts of Latin America. Advanced economies and China account for 80% of global grid spending. Investment in Latin America has almost doubled since 2021, notably in Colombia, Chile, and Brazil, where spending doubled in 2023 alone. However, investment remains worryingly low elsewhere.

Investments in battery storage are ramping up and are set to exceed USD 50 billion in 2024. But spending is highly concentrated. In 2023, for every dollar invested in battery storage in advanced economies and China, only one cent was invested in other EMDE.

Investment in energy efficiency and electrification in buildings and industry has been quite resilient, despite the economic headwinds. But most of the dynamism in the end-use sectors is coming from transport, where investment is set to reach new highs in 2024 (+8% compared to 2023), driven by strong electric vehicle (EV) sales.

The rise in clean energy spending is underpinned by emissions reduction goals, technological gains, energy security imperatives (particularly in the European Union), and an additional strategic element: major economies are deploying new industrial strategies to spur clean energy manufacturing and establish stronger market positions. Such policies can bring local benefits, although gaining a cost-competitive foothold in sectors with ample global capacity like solar PV can be challenging. Policy makers need to balance the costs and benefits of these programmes so that they increase the resilience of clean energy supply chains while maintaining gains from trade.

In the United States, investment in clean energy increases to an estimated more than USD 300 billion in 2024, 1.6 times the 2020 level and well ahead of the amount invested in fossil fuels. The European Union spends USD 370 billion on clean energy today, while China is set to spend almost USD 680 billion in 2024, supported by its large domestic market and rapid growth in the so-called “new three” industries: solar cells, lithium battery production and EV manufacturing.

Overall upstream oil and gas investment in 2024 is set to return to 2017 levels, but companies in the Middle East and Asia now account for a much larger share of the total

Change in upstream oil and gas investment by company type, 2017-2024, newly approved lng projects, led by the united states and qatar, bring a new wave of investment that could boost global lng export capacity by 50%, investment and cumulative capacity in lng liquefaction, 2015-2028, investment in fuel supply remains largely dominated by fossil fuels, although interest in low-emissions fuels is growing fast from a low base.

Upstream oil and gas investment is expected to increase by 7% in 2024 to reach USD 570 billion, following a 9% rise in 2023. This is being led by Middle East and Asian NOCs, which have increased their investments in oil and gas by over 50% since 2017, and which account for almost the entire rise in spending for 2023-2024.

Lower cost inflation means that the headline rise in spending results in an even larger rise in activity, by approximately 25% compared with 2022. Existing fields account for around 40% total oil and gas upstream investment, while another 33% goes to new fields and exploration. The remainder goes to tight oil and shale gas.

Most of the huge influx of cashflows to the oil and gas industry in 2022-2023 was either returned to shareholders, used to buy back shares or to pay down debt; these uses exceeded capital expenditure again in 2023. A surge in profits has also spurred a wave of mergers and acquisitions (M&A), especially among US shale companies, which represented 75% of M&A activity in 2023. Clean energy spending by oil and gas companies grew to around USD 30 billion in 2023 (of which just USD 1.5 billion was by NOCs), but this represents less than 4% of global capital investment on clean energy.

A significant wave of new investment is expected in LNG in the coming years as new liquefaction plants are built, primarily in the United States and Qatar. The concentration of projects looking to start operation in the second half of this decade could increase competition and raise costs for the limited number of specialised contractors in this area. For the moment, the prospect of ample gas supplies has not triggered a major reaction further down the value chain. The amount of new gas-fired power capacity being approved and coming online remains stable at around 50-60 GW per year.

Investment in coal has been rising steadily in recent years, and more than 50 GW of unabated coal-fired power generation was approved in 2023, the most since 2015, and almost all of this was in China.

Investment in low-emissions fuels is only 1.4% of the amount spent on fossil fuels (compared to about 0.5% a decade ago). There are some fast-growing areas. Investments in hydrogen electrolysers have risen to around USD 3 billion per year, although they remain constrained by uncertainty about demand and a lack of reliable offtakers. Investments in sustainable aviation fuels have reached USD 1 billion, while USD 800 million is going to direct air capture projects (a 140% increase from 2023). Some 20 commercial-scale carbon capture utilisation and storage (CCUS) projects in seven countries reached final investment decision (FID) in 2023; according to company announcements, another 110 capture facilities, transport and storage projects could do the same in 2024.

Energy investment decisions are primarily driven and financed by the private sector, but governments have essential direct and indirect roles in shaping capital flows

Sources of investment in the energy sector, average 2018-2023, sources of finance in the energy sector, average 2018-2023, households are emerging as important actors for consumer-facing clean energy investments, highlighting the importance of affordability and access to capital, change in energy investment volume by region and fuel category, 2016 versus 2023, market sentiment around sustainable finance is down from the high point in 2021, with lower levels of sustainable debt issuances and inflows into sustainable funds, sustainable debt issuances, 2020-2023, sustainable fund launches, 2020-2023, energy transitions are reshaping how energy investment decisions are made, and by whom.

This year’s World Energy Investment report contains new analysis on sources of investments and sources of finance, making a clear distinction between those making investment decisions (governments, often via state-owned enterprises (SOEs), private firms and households) and the institutions providing the capital (the public sector, commercial lenders, and development finance institutions) to finance these investments.

Overall, most investments in the energy sector are made by corporates, with firms accounting for the largest share of investments in both the fossil fuel and clean energy sectors. However, there are significant country-by-country variations: half of all energy investments in EMDE are made by governments or SOEs, compared with just 15% in advanced economies. Investments by state-owned enterprises come mainly from national oil companies, notably in the Middle East and Asia where they have risen substantially in recent years, and among some state-owned utilities. The financial sustainability, investment strategies and the ability for SOEs to attract private capital therefore become a central issue for secure and affordable transitions.

The share of total energy investments made or decided by private households (if not necessarily financed by them directly) has doubled from 9% in 2015 to 18% today, thanks to the combined growth in rooftop solar installations, investments in buildings efficiency and electric vehicle purchases. For the moment, these investments are mainly made by wealthier households – and well-designed policies are essential to making clean energy technologies more accessible to all . A comparison shows that households have contributed to more than 40% of the increase in investment in clean energy spending since 2016 – by far the largest share. It was particularly pronounced in advanced economies, where, because of strong policy support, households accounted for nearly 60% of the growth in energy investments.

Three quarters of global energy investments today are funded from private and commercial sources, and around 25% from public finance, and just 1% from national and international development finance institutions (DFIs).

Other financing options for energy transition have faced challenges and are focused on advanced economies. In 2023, sustainable debt issuances exceeded USD 1 trillion for the third consecutive year, but were still 25% below their 2021 peak, as rising coupon rates dampened issuers’ borrowing appetite. Market sentiment for sustainable finance is wavering, with flows to ESG funds decreasing in 2023, due to potential higher returns elsewhere and credibility concerns. Transition finance is emerging to mobilise capital for high-emitting sectors, but greater harmonisation and credible standards are required for these instruments to reach scale.

A secure and affordable transitioning away from fossil fuels requires a major rebalancing of investments

Investment change in 2023-2024, and additional average annual change in investment in the net zero scenario, 2023-2030, a doubling of investments to triple renewables capacity and a tripling of spending to double efficiency: a steep hill needs climbing to keep 1.5°c within reach, investments in renewables, grids and battery storage in the net zero emissions by 2050 scenario, historical versus 2030, investments in end-use sectors in the net zero emissions by 2050 scenario, historical versus 2030, meeting cop28 goals requires a doubling of clean energy investment by 2030 worldwide, and a quadrupling in emde outside china, investments in renewables, grids, batteries and end use in the net zero emissions by 2050 scenario, 2024 and 2030, mobilising additional, affordable financing is the key to a safer and more sustainable future, breakdown of dfi financing by instrument, currency, technology and region, average 2019-2022, much greater efforts are needed to get on track to meet energy & climate goals, including those agreed at cop28.

Today’s investment trends are not aligned with the levels necessary for the world to have a chance of limiting global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels and to achieve the interim goals agreed at COP28. The current momentum behind renewable power is impressive, and if the current spending trend continues, it would cover approximately two-thirds of the total investment needed to triple renewable capacity by 2030. But an extra USD 500 billion per year is required in the IEA’s Net Zero Emissions by 2050 Scenario (NZE Scenario) to fill the gap completely (including spending for grids and battery storage). This equates to a doubling of current annual spending on renewable power generation, grids, and storage in 2030, in order to triple renewable capacity.

The goal of doubling the pace of energy efficiency improvement requires an even greater additional effort. While investment in the electrification of transport is relatively strong and brings important efficiency gains, investment in other efficiency measures – notably building retrofits – is well below where it needs to be: efficiency investments in buildings fell in 2023 and are expected to decline further in 2024. A tripling in the current annual rate of spending on efficiency and electrification – to about USD 1.9 trillion in 2030 – is needed to double the rate of energy efficiency improvements.

Anticipated oil and gas investment in 2024 is broadly in line with the level of investment required in 2030 in the Stated Policies Scenario, a scenario which sees oil and natural gas demand levelling off before 2030. However, global spare oil production capacity is already close to 6 million barrels per day (excluding Iran and Russia) and there is a shift expected in the coming years towards a buyers’ market for LNG. Against this backdrop, the risk of over-investment would be strong if the world moves swiftly to meet the net zero pledges and climate goals in the Announced Pledges Scenario (APS) and the NZE Scenario.

The NZE Scenario sees a major rebalancing of investments in fuel supply, away from fossil fuels and towards low-emissions fuels, such as bioenergy and low-emissions hydrogen, as well as CCUS. Achieving net zero emissions globally by 2050 would mean annual investment in oil, gas, and coal falls by more than half, from just over USD 1 trillion in 2024 to below USD 450 billion per year in 2030, while spending on low-emissions fuels increases tenfold, to about USD 200 billion in 2030 from just under USD 20 billion today.

The required increase in clean energy investments in the NZE Scenario is particularly steep in many emerging and developing economies. The cost of capital remains one of the largest barriers to investment in clean energy projects and infrastructure in many EMDE, with financing costs at least twice as high as in advanced economies as well as China. Macroeconomic and country-specific factors are the major contributors to the high cost of capital for clean energy projects, but so, too, are risks specific to the energy sector. Alongside actions by national policy makers, enhanced support from DFIs can play a major role in lowering financing costs and bringing in much larger volumes of private capital.

Targeted concessional support is particularly important for the least-developed countries that will otherwise struggle to access adequate capital. Our analysis shows cumulative financing for energy projects by DFIs was USD 470 billion between 2013 and 2021, with China-based DFIs accounting for slightly over half of the total. There was a significant reduction in financing for fossil fuel projects over this period, largely because of reduced Chinese support. However, this was not accompanied by a surge in support for clean energy projects. DFI support was provided almost exclusively (more than 90%) as debt (not all concessional) with only about 3% reported as equity financing and about 6% as grants. This debt was provided in hard currency or in the currency of donors, with almost no local-currency financing being reported.

The lack of local-currency lending pushes up borrowing costs and in many cases is the primary reason behind the much higher cost of capital in EMDE compared to advanced economies. High hedging costs often make this financing unaffordable to many of the least-developed countries and raises questions of debt sustainability. More attention is needed from DFIs to focus interventions on project de-risking that can mobilise much higher multiples of private capital.
