The Disney Advertising Upfront, Bob Iger

If there were any lingering doubts that the Walt Disney Co. is now comfortable leaning into the edgier aspects of its increasingly aligned portfolio, they evaporated about 10 minutes into Tuesday’s upfront presentation when Ryan Reynolds promised that eventual Disney+ library member Deadpool & Wolverine would be a boon to advertisers targeting “testicular trauma” and “cocaine content.”

Jimmy kimmel set to moderate conversation with joe biden and barack obama next month, 'tv's top 5': the upfronts wrap-up edition.

“I think we’re incredibly fortunate to have a captain like Bob Iger at the helm of the Walt Disney Co., ensuring that the magical essence of imagination and storytelling are at the heart of everything,” Stone said to screams of approval from the corner of the room apparently occupied by the Disney contingent.

“Today, we’re going to share the incredible projects that we’re working on,” added Iger, “and then later Jimmy Kimmel will be out to tear them all apart. I think he’ll probably be tearing me apart, too.”

Iger’s brief spiel focused on that storytelling — though he acknowledged the “radical changes that have transformed the business,” including their “whole business model.” But he was most memorable in noting what a rare sight it was to see him up there. His decision to grace the Javits Center stage broke Iger’s decades-long stint of sticking it to the upfront audience. His last time speaking for media buyers, he noted, was in 1994 — when he was the president of a pre-Disney-owned ABC.

Let’s not gloss over that bit about the runtime, though. The Disney presentation was an absolute marathon — with probably a few more trailers than necessary. That’s apparently just what happens when you’re selling Hulu, Disney+, ABC, FX, ESPN and several other platforms that selectively diverge and converge depending on one’s streaming or cable subscriptions.

What seemed to play well were the spots for Disney+ entries from Marvel ( Agatha All Along ) and Lucasfilm ( The Acolyte ). There was also a lot of apparent affection for the teaser of season four of Only Murders in the Building , as the upfront audience carries a torch for Steve Martin and Martin Short more than, say, Kardashian. The breakout, however, might have been upcoming FX dark comedy Dying for Sex . A trailer for the Liz Meriwether miniseries starring Michelle Willians and Jenny Slate quickly won over the crowd.

Having Williams on hand to introduce it didn’t hurt, either. The presentation was most keyed in when it ceded the stage to actors. Where the presentation lagged was during protracted sports segments. Getting Jason Kelce on the roster of Monday Night Football talent and in-house to sell the coming season? More than worth the stage time. Bragging about ABC and ESPN hosting the Super Bowl telecast in … 2027 ? Not so much.

Rita Ferro, Disney’s President of Global Advertising, on the Company’s Upfront and the Differentiator of Storytelling

With Upfront season in full swing, The Walt Disney Company is excited to roll out its annual star-studded Upfront presentation — which takes place on Tuesday, May 14 at the North Javits Center in New York City.

This year’s event will showcase everything from Jimmy Kimmel’s return to the Disney Upfront stage following his successful stint as Oscar host , to a trove of announcements around some of Disney’s most popular series and franchises, in addition to new content and verticals.

The presentation is also an opportunity for Disney to highlight key priorities for its business, including its global streaming position, its leadership in data and technology innovation, its commitment to inclusion and the most scale and impact across live, sports, and entertainment.

To find out more about what’s in store, we spoke with Rita Ferro — Disney’s President of Global Advertising — who explained what helps The Walt Disney Company lead the way forward in advertising .

As we approach the Disney Upfront, what makes Disney different in terms of the value to advertisers compared to other media companies?

We have the best storytelling and brands in the world when it comes to entertainment and sports. And we have really invested, over the last decade, in technology that differentiates us from all of our traditional competitors. So, when I think across the marketplace, no one has the advertising technology and the data stack that we have built over the course of that period.

We can also compete with any of the new technology platforms, and what sets us apart across all of those is truly our scale. The ability to have the amount of content that we have across sports, which is a hugely popular marketplace right now in terms of advertisers and where they’re spending their dollars, is also a differentiator.

To have scale there and be able to make sure that every advertiser who wants to stay within the Disney platform can move those dollars and maximize their impact across our portfolio of brands and audiences is really important.

The week of Upfront is usually full of announcements. What can you tell us about this year’s showcase?

I don’t want to give too much away, but that stage is going to be very impactful in terms of the level and quality of talent across it. That’s talent both from our television studios and our theatrical studios, but also from sports.

The presentation will really be a homage to the quality and storytelling that Disney is known for that differentiates us. It will also remind clients of the investments we’ve made in technology that really drive the outcomes in performance they are looking for.

We have the best storytelling in the world, coupled with the innovative technology platforms that are leading the marketplace forward through our solutions-driven data insights.

Some technology companies are great at technology, some are great at technology and innovation, and some are great at storytelling. At Disney, we’re great at all three – and that intersection is where both magic and winning happens.

presentation on walt disney

What are the biggest focuses for Disney in terms of its advertising business?

We’re focused on driving growth and scale around the pillars that [Disney CEO Bob Iger] has laid out for us.

There also continues to be a focus on sports growth and we have so many new rights this year as we head into the market. It’s the first year of our SEC deal, we have expanded NCAA rights, expanded college football rights. There’s more NFL and we’re excited about the growth of NBA and our NHL business, which is very strong. And we cannot forget the importance of women’s sports and what that is contributing to our overall business on the sports side.

When you look across our ecosystem, we know that our linear shows are doing tremendously well on our streaming platforms, but with a different audience. That’s incremental reach, and we’ve done a great job of making sure we have all the measurement tools to be able to deliver and demonstrate that reach as marketers are being much more thoughtful about how they’re spending their dollars.

With Disney+, Hulu, ESPN, ABC, and many other networks, there’s a ton of points of connection for advertisers to reach consumers. Why is that important?

We talked about incremental reach, and so marketers want to know that when they’re buying their audience segment, that they’re reaching that audience across the full portfolio of both linear and streaming at scale.

When you look at the marketplace today, marketers are spending more dollars, but with fewer, more strategic players… so what’s coming back to Disney is a deeper relationship with fewer brands that really drive an association. We’re seeing that be evident in the sports business right now.

Looking at our College GameDay sponsors, they tour all of our College GameDay locations. They have branding on the side; it’s integrated and becomes synonymous with the show. Our brands also lend themselves to that, such as the integrations with The Bear that we’ve done with some major marketers who are now in season three recreating those integrations that have been so powerful from day one.

What does this year’s Upfront presentation tell us about what Disney Advertising’s business will look like going forward?

We’re doubling down on all of our priorities we shared at the Tech & Data showcase, Disney is a technology company as much as it’s a storytelling company. And what you’re going to see and feel on May 14 is the importance of creativity as a differentiator and unifier.

The storytelling that comes from this company is incomparable in the marketplace. It’s very hard to buy or rent that. You build those brands over years of consistent storytelling, of connections to consumers, and we want to make sure that message is clear throughout the presentation.

At the end of the day, quality content is a differentiator in an experience and how it makes the consumer feel — and making you feel drives outcomes.

Company Behind Disney World Body Scanners Wants To Take over NYC, but Finds Shockingly High Failure Rate

in Disney , Disney Parks , Theme Parks , Walt Disney World

Security at Disney World

Everyone has had to walk through the security screening checkpoints at Walt Disney World and Disneyland. But as you rapidly pass through the body scanner, do you ever wonder how exactly these work and how effective this scanner is?

A security metal detector in Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World Resort.

Well, some of these answers are becoming clearer as the company behind that security screening technology, Evolv Technology, tries to reel in an even bigger contract than Disney World: New York City.

In their presentation to New York, Evolv Technology, the artificial intelligence gun detection company, they bragged to New York Mayor Eric Adams that it has been working with the The Walt Disney Company since 2014.

Evolv co-founder Anil Chitkara wrote in an email to Adams:

As I mentioned, Linda Reid, VP Security for Walt Disney World (Florida) has known us since 2014 and deployed many of our systems at the Parks and Disney Springs. They’ve had success screening for weapons with Evolv Express … There may be some interesting parallels to how you are thinking about everyone’s role in security.

Walt Disney World Railroad at the Magic Kingdom entrance

New York is considering using full-body scanners in Times Square, the Port Authority Bus Terminal, and subway stations. However, as a trial run, it tested the Evolv scanner outside a Bronx Hospital and City Hall, and what it found was alarming.

At the Bronx Hospital, the scanners reported false positives 85 percent of the time. Despite those shockingly high numbers and Evolv’s CEO said the scanners “aren’t for public transportation,” Adams announced that New York will roll them out in the subways later this year.

Disney World started using the Evolv scanners in 2020. According to Evolv co-founder Mike Ellenbogan, the units can scan 1,800 to 3,600 guests an hour. They can now be found at all of Disney World’s World’s theme parks and Disney Springs.

Disneyland Body Scanners

Shortly after Walt Disney World started using the Evolv scanners, Six Flags purchased dozens of units for their theme parks nationwide.

Despite the number of false positives in New York City, there has never been an incident of someone sneaking a gun or other weapons into Walt Disney World. New York City is apparently moving forward with its purchase for the Transit system.

How do you feel about Disney World scanners coming to New York City?

Avatar land coming to Disneyland resort, Disney CEO confirms

Conceptual art that shows a lush alien world and a potential boat ride.

An Avatar-themed land had been dangled as a tantalizing possibility during the extended Disneyland pitch that also floated potential themed lands based on Tangled, Frozen, Peter Pan, Zootopia, Toy Story, Black Panther, Coco, Tron and Encanto as potential expansion projects in Anaheim.

The DisneylandForward plan that has been full of promises but vague on specifics throughout the three-year approval process is finally starting to come into focus with a themed land based on the World of Pandora set to become the first project to break ground.

Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed during the MoffettNathanson Media and Communications Summit on Wednesday that an Avatar-themed land is coming to the Disneyland Resort.

“We have just gotten approval from the city of Anaheim for the biggest expansion of Disneyland since we opened DCA in 2001,” Iger said during the presentation. “It’s a huge expansion. We haven’t been specific about what’s going to be in it, except for Avatar.”

The Anaheim City Council gave unanimous final approval in early May to the $1.9 billion Disneyland expansion proposal that updates a 1990s city plan to allow for a mix of theme park, hotel, retail, dining and entertainment on the eastern and western edges of the Disneyland resort. The newly approved plan goes into effect in early June.

Iger has been teasing an “exciting Avatar experience” for the Disneyland resort since February 2023.

At the time, Iger described the concept art as “creative inspiration” for a potential Avatar experience being designed by Walt Disney Imagineering. Disney’s creative arm is teaming up with “Avatar” filmmaker James Cameron on the new land.

The 12-acre Pandora — The World of Avatar-themed land that debuted in 2017 at Disney’s Animal Kingdom in Florida features the $2.3 billion film franchise’s signature floating mountains and bioluminescent plants. The land includes the Avatar Flight of Passage 3D flight simulator, Na’vi River Journey water ride, Satu’li Canteen quick service restaurant and Windtraders gift shop.
