The Finance PhD pathway
Master of Research (MRes)
The Finance group at Cambridge Judge Business School covers a broad spectrum of issues in finance. We define finance as more than a set of financial transactions – it is the glue that holds together corporations, capital markets and the real economy.
We pursue research on empirical and theoretical corporate finance, asset pricing, and financial accounting as well as the intersections of finance and economics. In doing so, we treat finance as both an art and a science.
Professor Raghavendra Rau talks about the Finance pathway.
Hello. My name is Raghu Rau, and I’m the Head of the Finance and Accounting group here at Cambridge Judge Business School. Finance is actually an area which deals with four different groups of people.
We are looking at investors. Investors are people who give money to corporations and to reinvest in investment project and so on. We’re looking at corporations who take money from individuals and use that to invest in different types of projects. We have financial intermediaries, who sit between the corporations and individuals trying to make sure they have the best match between projects which the companies are offering and the individuals who want to invest in these projects. And finally, you have government and regulators who make sure the whole process is fair.
Here at Cambridge Judge Business School, we focus mostly on corporate finance. So in particular, we look at empirical corporate finance. What that means is most of our research uses actual data from companies. We look at why companies use particular types of financial policy.
We look at why individuals make certain types of decisions, whether they do this rationally, whether they’re driven by behavioural biases, and so on. We look at what conflicts of interest might make financial intermediaries advocate one type of action rather than another, for example, why they might ask firms to issue equity in place of debt and other factors like that. Overall, our focus is on trying to get actual data, hard data, which tells us exactly– allows us to get at the truth, allows us to figure out what it is that individuals, managers, and financial intermediaries are really thinking when they make financial decisions.
A lot of the data we use comes from deep engagement with companies. So in fact, here at Cambridge Judge Business School, we engage a lot with individuals who are at high level positions at firms. And because we are the University of Cambridge, we have been able to get access to a lot of unique data sets, which are not available typically at most universities across the world. And we use these to answer these types of questions.
What type of student are we looking for? Basically, someone who is interested in finding out the truth. The problem with industry is that you cannot really spend much time digging into to issues and figure out what is really going on.
We don’t just have the time. You need to talk to your clients. You need to talk to your company. These are short-frame, short-term projects, which typically last more than less than about three to six months.
Three to six months is a very, very short time for an academic. If you’re interested in truly figuring out how things work, you really have to go in-depth into these matters. And that might take a year, maybe two years. At the end of the day, we’re looking for someone who is at heart interested in the truth, someone who is, well, for better words, an academic.

The Finance PhD is usually a four year programme. You are registered on the MPhil degree for the first two years during which you will follow a programme of taught courses and prepare your first research paper.
In the first year you will attend a comprehensive set of courses designed to train you in the theory and methods necessary to conduct high quality finance research. These courses are academically rigorous and you will be examined in each of them. Upon successful completion of all first year courses you will progress to year two.
Your research training continues in this second year with workshops focused on developing specific skills such as academic writing, advanced level reading groups where we delve deeply into key current research papers, and courses introducing you to the practice of learning, teaching and assessment.
Alongside this, you will commence research in your chosen topics and the year culminates with the defense of your first research paper before a transfer panel committee. After the successful defense of your transfer panel paper you will move onto the final two years of the PhD programme.
You complete your remaining research papers in years three and four, and will defend your work in the viva voce exam soon after completion of your thesis. Training continues in the final two years but the focus shifts towards preparing you for an academic career.
You will attend workshops designed to help you to publish your work and to introduce you to the academic job market.
In the final year we devote a lot of time to both viva and job market preparation with the aim of you successfully defending your thesis and taking up academic positions in leading business schools or universities, or research jobs in policy institutions.

Salaries for graduates of leading masters in finance programmes have grown much faster for those working in financial services compared with other sectors, in a sign of the industry’s strength.
The latest Financial Times ranking shows that, among those who completed a masters in finance degree three years previously in one of 65 ranked schools, the average salary was $98,000 this year for those working in finance — up 12 per cent compared with 2023. For the third of graduates who chose to work in other sectors, the rise was 3 per cent to $78,000.
This year’s FT ranking of courses
Of those who do not go on to work in the finance sector, the largest share are in consulting, followed by technology, manufacturing and energy.
The trend pointed to a fresh boost in the relative attractiveness — in salary terms — for graduates working in finance, and marked the largest pay differential in at least eight years.
The average salary of female graduates working in finance jumped to $91,000, narrowing the gap to men’s slightly, to 8 per cent, highlighting the still considerable disparity in what is traditionally a male-dominated career.

Chris Connors of Johnson Associates, a New York-based financial services remuneration consultancy, notes that the surge in earnings was also seen in his firm’s data. He says it was caused by higher initial pay amid fierce competition for recruits, subsequent increases linked to high inflation and a recent rise in bonuses after two stable years.
“The sector was hiring like crazy and the war for talent was very pronounced, with way higher turnover,” he says. “Since 2021, base salaries have risen far more than historical rates in financial services.”
For the second year, ESCP maintained its position at the top of the FT ranking of “pre-experience” courses — for students with little or no prior professional work — while three other French-based schools were in the top four: HEC Paris , Skema , and Essec . London Business School retained its top position among the few institutions that offer a “post-experience” course for those who already have sector experience, ahead of the University of Cambridge: Judge and the University of Amsterdam — Amsterdam Business School .
Among alumni of “pre-experience” courses who then go to work in finance, graduates who take a job in trading had the highest average starting salaries at $80,000, while those in non-financial sectors earned the least at $55,000. Three years after graduating, the top earners were those in private equity, venture capital, and hedge funds, earning an average of $120,000.
Since 2017, nearly three-quarters of these courses’ graduates have entered financial sector employment and, in each year, have earned more than those who go into non-financial sectors. The salary gap between graduates working in the financial and non-financial sectors has increased to $20,000, up from $6,000 in 2017.
The 2024 rankings were compiled using data from business schools and alumni who completed their masters in 2021. Participation by institutions is voluntary, and the list is weighted according to factors including salaries, gender balance and value for money.
The ranking data shows that there is still a significant majority of men, both as students and teachers. Just three of the 65 ranked schools had gender parity among faculty — IE in Spain, and Grenoble Ecole de Management and Iéseg in France. The proportion of female staff was as low as 17 per cent at Università della Svizzera italiana in Switzerland.
Among student cohorts, just Toulouse School of Management and Skema Business School in France had gender parity, while on average just over a third of the classes were female. The figure was as low as 11 per cent at Lucerne School of Business in Switzerland.
The strength of the earnings increases is one possible reason for the continued demand for finance masters, despite a wider stagnation in less specialised business and management degrees, notably in Europe and North America.
Disruption of traditional finance jobs by artificial intelligence — with changes to both basic data entry and more sophisticated analytical work — has also sparked a restructuring by recruiters and a likely shift in students’ interests.
At the same time, several business schools say employers are increasingly demanding so-called “softer” skills, such as teamwork, communication and critical thinking, alongside “harder” quantitative skills, including coding and financial analysis.
Students are keen for greater hands-on project-based “experiential” learning with companies, too, and are pushing to learn about newer technologies such as cryptocurrencies, as well as ways to engage with sustainability and societal impact.
The FT ranking takes account of business schools’ approach to sustainability through their campus commitments to net zero emissions and publication of carbon emissions audits. Here, SDA Bocconi/Università Bocconi in Italy performed best, followed by BI Norwegian Business School and IE in Spain.
Across the ranked schools, alumni rated their strongest courses as corporate finance, investments and statistics. Compliance received the lowest rating from the graduates.
North American courses were the most expensive per month on average, while those taught in continental Europe were the cheapest — below the price for UK and Asia-based schools.

International insider: german deep dive; inside all3media sale; sustainable schwarzenegger, universal says proposed uk theme park & resort will give $53b boost to country’s economy.

Universal has suggested that a proposed UK theme park and resort will generate close to $53B (£50B) in economic benefits to the host country.
Universal Universal Destinations & Experiences (UDX), the theme park unit of Comcast subsidiary NBCUniversal, announced last December that it had acquired a 476-acre site for a proposed new UK location outside the town of Bedford, some 60 miles northwest of London.
The report also estimated the site would generate up to $15B (£14.1B) in net additional tax returns for the UK over the same period.
It said that other potential benefits included the creation of thousands of jobs, including 20,000 jobs during the construction period as well as 8,000 posts once the site was operational.
The proposed UK site would be the first European location for UDX, which currently runs five branded theme parks and resorts, spanning including Universal Orlando Resort, Universal Studios Hollywood, Universal Studios Japan, Universal Beijing Resort, and Universal Studios Singapore.
Wednesday’s EIA report suggested the park would be one of the the highest-attended attractions in the UK and bring in millions of international visitors.
“A world-class theme park and resort from Universal has the potential to generate billions in economic benefit for the UK, by creating thousands of high-quality jobs and attracting millions of new visitors to the country,” said Page Thompson, President, New Ventures of Universal Destinations & Experiences in response to the EIA report.
