Founders’ Day and the importance of valuing our history

  • By hmw in parenting , Uncategorized

At the end of this week – on Saturday 23 rd June – we celebrate our annual Founders’ Day at St Mary’s Calne. For me – for us all – it is arguably the most important day in the school;s calendar: a day when we remember the Founders of the school, and value their legacy. We are indebted to the men and women who had the vision that led to the creation of the school back in 1873, and who have contributed to the leadership and vision of the school since. None of the education for which the school has become known would have happened without the foresight of the original Founders and Governors of the school, who set out with the express intention of developing a school which provided an excellent education for girls. We owe them a debt of gratitude – without them this fine school simply would not exist – and this is why we honour them on Founders’ Day each year.

The day is a very full one, with a Church service, Leavers’ Concert, champagne receptions, a special lunch, our annual prizegiving and a special afternoon tea, followed by an emotional Leavers’ Service and – this year, for the first time – a farewell tea for leaving staff. The Lily Ball, for leavers, their parents and their guests, will round off the day. Whatever the weather, the day is normally an amazing one. It is an opportunity to congratulate our Year 13 Leavers, and to honour their achievements, as well as for all of us to take visible, obvious pride in the school. Moreover, we allow all of those connected with the school to feel the privilege that we feel to be part of this great school.

I remind the girls each year that we should never take Founders’ Day for granted, or see it is just simply another school event. Founders’ Day is extremely important for the school for two reasons: firstly, it is a day on which we celebrate achievement – our many achievements, individual and collective; second, it is an important occasion for the whole school to be together, to do things together, and to remember that we are an important and strong community – the whole is stronger than the sum of its parts. In the Founders’ Day church service, there is a section towards the end when the whole school stands and we pledge ourselves – we make a commitment to do the right thing, to be honourable and to carry out the intentions of our Founders, namely to respond to their goals for a real education, for the stretching of the individual, and for learning and preparation for a successful life. We say all that together because it is important to say it all together. We need this occasion in the year just to remind us that we do not work, or live or play in isolation. We do it as a school – a great school which has stood the test of time and which has a great, great history.

I am looking forward to Saturday.

Bright futures built on strong foundations

To the stars, we soar up high, preparing to play in the courts of life, what is the hunger of the world that i must respond to, blasting into the past: remembering our foundation day celebrations.

Blasting Into the Past The past 20 years have been a rewarding journey for FAITH Colleges. Amidst these unprecedented times in our lifetime, our community goes back in time to recall with fondness past celebrations of our foundation day. With gratitude and so much hope in our hearts, we look to the future with a strong resolve grounded on our conviction that the best years for FAITH are yet to come.

“Foundation day celebrations in pre-pandemic times were exciting and eventful for all. The students were very eager and happy to participate in the different activities even though they were tired due to the preparations made weeks before. Different departments had their own entry to the SHINDIG where the employees displayed their talents while wearing their beautiful outfits and colorful costumes as they strutted on stage. My favorite was when the Library Department created a photo exhibit that showed the history and development of FAITH Colleges that covered the ground breaking for our first building—Mabini Hall, the administration, pioneer employees and students, up to the most recent pictures. What do I miss the most? Seeing the students on the campus grounds proudly wearing their foundation day T-shirts, enjoying the fair booths and all the activities.” – Glaisa M. Redondo, SHLRC Librarian

“The 10th Foundation day was really a memorable one. The opening of the 12th NCAA-South coincided with the celebrations that added glamour and prestige to the Foundation Day celebration.” – Damialito O Arim, Sports Director

“As part of the Technical Committee, the MIS worked “behind the cameras” every Foundation Day, supporting all events—from departmental programs, concerts, and recently even esports. We see to it that every program ran smoothly to give students and parents the best experience possible.I remember the 10 th year of the foundation celebration best. That year was memorable to me since it was my first foundation experience at FAITH Colleges. That same year, FAITH was also hosting the NCAA-South Season 12 which made the event bigger and louder. It was also the first time I performed on stage together with my colleagues for the SHINDIG program. It was also the first time that we livestreamed and broadcasted an event online. I guess my team’s favorite events were the concerts and the mobile games tournament. As we supported the events, we enjoyed it ,too. We sorely miss all these events. We hope and pray that this pandemic will be over soon so we can celebrate our Foundation Day the way we used to.” – Benison Sandoval, MIS Manager

“Celebrating the FAITH Colleges Foundation Day would always remind me of two words: fellowship and gratitude. First is fellowship because all the fun games and activities that showcased our talents gave us the precious chance to bond with our colleagues. Second is gratitude. I am very thankful that for 11 years starting from being a FAITH Colleges student and to being part of the institution as guidance coordinator, FAITH never failed to give me some of the best experiences of my life.” – Jane Aira Ramilo, Guidance Coordinator

“Each Foundation Day celebration here at FAITH is a manifestation of the whole community’s spirituality and strong love for Mama Mary (Mater Fidelium). Each year, the highlight of our week-long celebration was the celebration of the Holy Mass every 8th of September.  On those days, families gathered in the field and sat in circles to attend the Mass as a small praying community since the covered court was already overflowing. Each year, the Holy Mass gathered the entire FAITH community in thanksgiving, as we all look forward to celebrating as one big FAITH Family.” – Anthony James P. Mendoza, Campus Ministry and ASEAN Residence Head

“September is audit period. Because of the nature of our work, our department would be working most of the time while the entire community participated in the activities throughout the week-long celebration. But while we mostly stayed in front of our computers, we still felt the vibes of the different activities, specially when we would hear the excited screams coming from the gymnasium. After work, we’d stay until late night to watch the amazing shows. I also miss the booths with different food choices.” – John Henry F. Refran, Accountant

“ Mommy, miss ko na po ‘yong bonding natin sa FAITH campus during past Foundation Sunday celebrations ,” words from my child Angel. I do share her sentiments both as a parent and as an employee. After attending the Mass, we would watch the shows. What we loved most was our bonding during lunchtime. Iikutin namin ang buong campus. Tapos, hahanap kami ng spot where we can eat our lunch together . We miss the fresh air, the gardens, the College Promenade.” – Ohlie Macatangay, FAITH Catholic School parent

“I’d say the Shindig will always be memorable. The Shindig happens every three years and showcased the talents of faculty members and administrative staff. It was the time where we took a break from our regular work and showed our students that we too, have talent other than teaching and doing administrative work. Shindig 2016 will always be special to me because it was the first time I experienced the feeling of having long, blonde hair. Seriously though, what I loved best about Shindig was that it was an activity for a cause. The proceeds from selling tickets to the Shindig went to the Bato-Balani Foundation.” – Jaime J. David IV, ME, Physical Plant Administraton

How I remember our foundation day celebrations in the pre-pandemic times By Angelika Malabuyo, BSIE

essay on founders day celebration in school

During my five years of study at FAITH Colleges, I can describe all the Foundation Day Celebrations that I have attended as both festive and hectic. I can still vividly recall how crazy and loud the entire community gets whenever it is our foundation celebration week. It was as if our school grounds would turn into something like Coachella. Every year, the celebrations get better and bigger. I believe the game-changer here was the fact that the entire community committed to intensifying our founding anniversary celebrations. As our school grew each year, we grew as well as a community. It is hard to say which was the best part of every celebration. But the Shindig, which only happens every three years, was a must go-to not just for the students but more so for the alumni. Seeing the Institution’s faculty and administrative staff enjoying themselves while performing and entertaining the community was such as sight to see. Believe me, every Shindig that I attended were all top tiers. It must be included in every Braveheart’s Top 10 Foundation Day Moments.

Aside from the main events like the World of Dance (WOD), Rave/After Party Concerts, etc., we had the Picnic Lunch per college. We played games, usually per block section. The main event was the buffet. This is on my favorite list because this gave us the chance to bond and know more our brothers and sisters from the other year levels. I think the college picnic lunches were what powered the 11-year winning streak of Thurbligz as champions of the BravEvolution.

What I missed the most are the vibe and the entire community itself. I miss the competitive atmosphere during World of Dance (WOD); the cramming weeks or days before the main event due to last minute changes in production or choreography; and the celebratory vibe that you get from everybody. I miss it. I miss FAITH Colleges so much.

What are my cannot-forget moments? All bits of it! By Nicole R. Austria, BSN-4

Our Foundation Day celebration used to be the most-awaited event of the entire year. I could still vividly remember how lively, fun, and enjoyable this week-long celebrations were during the pre-pandemic time. This were the times when almost all classrooms were empty as we all gathered in the gymnasium where the celebration was held with a blast.

Every year, there were different sets of activities and competitions that we truly enjoyed and valued. I remember the band concerts, dance competitions (Step-Up), the Search for Mr. and Ms. Bravehearts, ASEAN, Shindig, and the class picnic lunch.

Certainly, the last two are my favorites. I truly consider myself very lucky as I got to witness through the Shindig how talented my college professors were. I would definitely never forget how great they were on stage. I was too mesmerized to the point that I almost tripped over the crowd while I was cheering actively and shouting at the top of my lungs. I cannot also forget the picnic where my classmates and I got to share lunch boodle fight-style with the visiting Japanese students from the Tokyo Medical University. The whole duration of the picnic lunch was filled with light talks and heartwarming smiles and at that very moment, it dawned upon me that the foundation week was not just for the commemoration of the founding of the school but is also for the celebration of camaraderie, love, and friendship. With that, I am certain that all foundation celebrations that I experienced ever since my senior high school days until mycollege years at FAITH are treasures that will forever be embedded in my heart. And if I am to be asked what I miss the most about the foundation celebration, my answer would be, “All bits of it.”

Exceptionally memorable days of entertainment and fellowship By Jillian B. Lansangan, BSMLS-4

As our dearest alma mater commemorated its 21st Founding Anniversary, we are humbly reminded not only of its mission, charism, heritage, and founding story but also its unwavering commitment to respond to today’s reality. However, due to the ongoing global health crisis, this celebration was conducted online for the second time around. It is unfortunate to again miss out on all the fun and thrilling festivities usually held on the loud and crowded school grounds. This certainly sparks a feeling of nostalgia, especially in old students like me as wonderful memories of the past celebrations come flooding into my mind.

FAITH Colleges’ Foundation Day celebrations were marked with various activities for students, institutional partners, alumni, parents, and other members of the community. The dance competitions, e-tournaments, concerts, musical performances, initiation rites, picnic lunches, and many more showcased the unity and togetherness of First Asians. If asked to choose the main highlight of the celebration, I would definitely pick the World of Dance Competition. Dancing has always been my passion. This kind of art freely allows me to express myself in ways that words never could. Being able to participate in this competition for two consecutive years was such an unforgettable and delightful experience. Aside from being able to do what I love most, I was also able to meet amazing people from other courses and build unexpected friendships.

Second would be the Frosh Initiation Rites. Personally, I consider this as one of the best moments in my college life.  It was such a cordial, extra fun, exciting, yet messy way of welcoming the new members of the FAITH community. It felt like an extraordinary rite of passage for an individual to be officially considered as a Braveheart.

The Tertiary School Acquaintance Party 2019 would secure the third spot. This is special as this was one of our first activities as newly-elected FAITH Student Council officers. As a student leader and organizer, nothing warms my heart more than witnessing my fellow students express their happiness and satisfaction over the event.

Over the years, the commemoration of the institution’s founding celebration has provided exceptionally memorable days of entertainment and fellowship. This annual milestone represents the school’s unrelenting passion and initiative to maintain a meaningful presence in the lives of its students and surrounding communities while sustaining excellence. Undeniably, this is an event that a First Asian cannot afford to miss. I sincerely wish for the end of the pandemic so we may finally stop longing and reminiscing and start going back to the old ways.

Celebrating Founders’ Day

October 12, 2021 | Notre Dame Press | Notre Dame Interest

First commemorated by the University of Notre Dame community in the early 1840s, Founders’ Day was an annual celebration tied to the Feast of Edward the Confessor, Patron Saint of Rev. Edward Sorin, C.S.C. While the tradition fell by the wayside over the years, this October 12-13, 2021, the University is reviving the celebration of Founders’ Day , seizing this opportunity to celebrate the founding of the University by taking a deeper look at our own history so as to understand our present – and to reimagine our future.

The 2021 celebration will also recognize the 100th anniversary of the passing of Rev. John A. Zahm, C.S.C. , by honoring his legacy as a pivotal leader at the University. Notre Dame Press is proud to feature works that commemorate the legacy of the University of Notre Dame and the individuals who have and continue to expand its reach and reputation.

Edward Sorin

Marvin R. O’Connell’s Edward Sorin presents the definitive account of the life and labors of Edward Sorin, founder of the University of Notre Dame. Father Sorin, with the impressive help of gifted colleagues, turned the University from a section of land with a few log shacks and a handful of half-educated brothers to the premier Catholic institution of higher learning we revere today. This book documents Father Sorin’s will power and determination to build his university from the ground up to provide the groundwork of education for generations of students to come.

“Anyone interested in the origins of the University of Notre Dame will cherish this excellent biography of Fr. Edward Sorin. Edward Sorin can be highly recommended. It deserves a place of honor in any well-stocked library.” — Cistercian Studies Quarterly

Faith and Science at Notre Dame: John Zahm, Evolution, and the Catholic Church

In Faith and Science at Notre Dame , John Slattery charts the rise and fall of Holy Cross Priest Rev. John Augustine Zahm, C.S.C., examining his ascension to international fame in bridging evolution and Catholicism and shedding new light on his ultimate downfall via censure by the Congregation of the Index of Prohibited Books. This book is a complex and thrilling tale of Notre Dame, empirical science, and the simple faith of an Indiana priest.

“Slattery’s account of Zahm’s work provides a much-needed bridge between this reactionary era in the Church’s recent intellectual history and the more open era of Catholic thought that preceded the French Revolution. Faith and Science at Notre Dame is an indispensable addition to this history.” — Commonweal

The University of Notre Dame: A History

Thomas E. Blantz C.S.C. ‘s Th e University of Notre Dame tells the story of the renowned Catholic university’s growth and development from a primitive grade school and high school founded in 1842 by the Congregation of Holy Cross to the acclaimed undergraduate and research institution it became by the early twenty-first century. This book highlights the remarkable leaders who took part in developing the University to its present glory, including Father Edward Sorin, the twenty-eight-year-old French priest and visionary founder. By capturing the strong connections that exist between Notre Dame’s founding and early life and today’s university, Blantz creates the most complete and up-to-date history of the university available.

“Few people are better equipped to tell the story of how Sorin and Notre Dame beat the odds than Father Thomas Blantz, C.S.C. . . . In his newly published 600-page tome, The University of Notre Dame: A History , Blantz narrates the history of the University from the establishment of its founding religious order and the arrival of Father Sorin in Indiana to the inauguration of Father John I. Jenkins, C.S.C., as the University’s 17th president in 2005.” — American Catholic Studies Newsletter

Monk’s Notre Dame

Edward A. “Monk” Malloy C.S.C.’s Monk’s Notre Dame is a wonderful collection of humorous, poignant, and revealing stories and anecdotes that offers special insight into the university that Father Malloy has served so faithfully. With a story to tell about nearly every aspect of life at Notre Dame, this book intersperses fresh insight on traditional campus events and lesser-known stories of the University. Monk’s Notre Dame presents charming vignettes about the people who have made Notre Dame the place it is.

“As a student, administrator, faculty member, priest-in-residence and more, Fr. Malloy has seen our University from virtually every perspective. This book gives us all the opportunity to learn from and enjoy Notre Dame as seen through the eyes of my predecessor as President, fellow Holy Cross priest, and friend, Monk Malloy. I recommend it for anyone who loves Notre Dame and/or wants to better know this special place.” —Rev. John I. Jenkins, C.S.C., president, University of Notre Dame

The History of the Congregation of Holy Cross

Founded by Basile Moreau, C.S.C., the Congregation of Holy Cross (C.S.C) sought to minister and educate the people of France devastated by the French Revolution. During the centuries that followed, the Congregation expanded its mission around the globe to educate and evangelize, including the Congregation’s first educational institution in America—the University of Notre Dame. James T. Connelly, C.S.C. ‘s sweeping book entitled The History of the Congregation of Holy Cross offers the first complete history of the Congregation, covering nearly two centuries from 1820 to 2018.

“I want to celebrate and applaud the publication of Father Jim Connelly’s The History of the Congregation of Holy Cross . Father Connelly’s book is the first to retell this great story. For this, we can all be forever grateful.” —Edward A. Malloy, C.S.C., president emeritus, University of Notre Dame

Stories in Light: A Guide to the Stained Glass of the Basilica at the University of Notre Dame

The Basilica of the Sacred Heart at the University of Notre Dame contains one of the largest collections of late nineteenth-century French stained glass outside of France. Cecilia Davis Cunningham and Nancy Cavadini’s informative guidebook Stories in Light tells the unique story of the windows: the improbable creation of a glassworks by cloistered Carmelite nuns in LeMans, France, and their stained glass that so perfectly illuminated the late-nineteenth-century French Catholic spirituality of the Congregation of Holy Cross.

“A beautifully illustrated and impressively informative volume, Stories in Light: A Guide to the Stained Glass of the Basilica at the University of Notre Dame is an extraordinary and unreservedly recommended addition to personal, community, and academic library. . . collections.” — Midwest Book Review

This Place Called Notre Dame

As Notre Dame graduates who have worked to encapsulate the beauty of Notre Dame through their respective careers, photographer Matt Cashore and author and editor Kerry Temple have combined their talents in a magnificent new coffee-table book, This Place Called Notre Dame . Cashore’s photographs beautifully document campus life, and Kerry Temple’s accompanying articles and essays chronicle the nature, traditions, and growth of Notre Dame over the past four decades. This collaboration is a volume that speaks of Notre Dame with insight, artistry, and affection that will be treasured by all who love the University.

“Matt Cashore and Kerry Temple bring to This Place Called Notre Dame a depth of knowledge about the university shared by few people. Through the striking photography and engaging prose, we see ‘old Notre Dame’ in new and illuminating ways. In their pictures and words, Notre Dame comes alive as it is today—and even echoes awaken.” —Robert Schmuhl, author of Fifty Years with Father Hesburgh

The Significance of School Foundation Day

Every year, schools and universities celebrate their respective foundation days to commemorate the day when the school was founded or established. It is significant not only because of the number of years it has served the community where a school belongs to. It is likewise significant especially if the founding of the school has resulted to considerable benefit to those it serves.

When is School Foundation Day Commemorated?

The Foundation Day is typically the date when the school  first opened its doors to the public. On special milestones such as the 10th or 25th founding anniversary, the celebration may be done for several days. This is usually done to accommodate the various activities lined up for the occasion. Speeches of school authorities are heard as they enumerate school accomplishments  and their goals and plans for the coming years.

foundation day 1

It is typical for schools to adopt a very festive mood during the commemoration of the Foundation Day. There are carnival rides, games, dance and singing contests, movie showings, friendly sports competitions, food booths, retail booths, and just about anything that completes a school-wide celebration.   For Catholic schools and universities, the Holy Mass is an integral part of the School Foundation Day celebrations. One of the usual highlights of the event is the Field Demonstration of students as coached by their respective teachers.

Field Demonstration

For most parents, the field demonstration is considered the highlight because this is one of the rare chances they see their children perform with the rest of the students. Taking a cue from its name, it is often done in an open field to the loud beat of drums, uptempo music, and applause.  Students will dress and perform accordingly depending on the prevailing theme for the year.

Technically speaking, this is part of practical learning as students hone their skills in other things aside from academics. They will learn discipline, teamwork, and patience especially during practice sessions. The many hours spent in rehearsing are considered well spent as students put up a show of a lifetime for their parents.

In my children’s school, the celebration of the School Foundation Day is a very much awaited event. By far, this year’s celebration was the grandest we have seen because it was the 20th founding anniversary. Like all the other years before, it was a 3-day event which highly encouraged family bonding and togetherness. As early as now, the 25th year is already being talked about.

Commemorating the school foundation day is significant since it is the chance to remind the students about the humble beginnings of their educational institution. This could help them better appreciate the improvements they are currently enjoying which have been worked-hard for by school authorities, parents, and students that came before them. It is an opportune time especially for older and graduating students to determine what kind of legacy they can leave behind to the school that has supported them through the years and to the student body that will be left behind.

In celebration of the 155 th  anniversary of the founding of the American University of Beirut (AUB) on December 3, 1866, the annual Founders Day ceremony was held on Monday, December 6, 2021 at Assembly Hall. The event was also livestreamed on the AUB YouTube channel .

This year, AUB is also celebrating 100 years of coeducation. The university first welcomed women students to its campus in 1905. These earliest pioneers were students at the School of Nursing. It was in 1921, however, that AUB opened its doors to women in every field.

In his welcome remarks, Dr. Fadlo Khuri, AUB president said, “Although our founders imagined only male students and faculty, the principles upon which the university was founded pointed towards inclusion." He added, “It took the Ivy League and other great Western universities almost half a century to follow our lead, by which time AUB had already graduated female diplomats, educators, nurses, physicians, writers, and other trailblazers."

He pointed out that the first few generations of AUB alumnae included the influential advocate for women's rights Anbara Salam, founders of the transformative Al-Ahliah School, Wadad and Salma Makdisi, and Angela Jurdak, who became Lebanon's first woman diplomat. A few decades later, Ghada Samman would become one of the boldest writers in the Arab world and Zaha Hadid would later become the first woman to ever claim architecture's prestigious Pritzker Prize.

“A strong thread links these remarkable women with newer generations," said Dr. Khuri. He mentioned that in modern times, AUB has nurtured great female biological scientists as diverse as the world-renowned neuro-geneticist Huda Zoghbi and the great bone metabolism researcher Ghada Hajj Fuleihan. He added that the exceptionally accomplished chemist Najat Saliba and epidemiologist Abla Mehio Sibai were both remarkably named laureates of the prestigious Loréal UNESCO For Women in Science Awards in consecutive years.

“While acknowledging the long road traveled, we must acknowledge the equally arduous path ahead before true gender equality at AUB can be achieved and celebrated," he added.

Dr. Khuri continued that toward that end, six years ago, the first presidential task force on the lives and careers of women faculty was launched. “Their exhaustive report found that much progress had been made, but inequities remain and their recommendations are now being followed up on by a standing committee."

The student essay contest Every year on this occasion, students are invited to participate in the Founders Day Student Essay Contest. This year, the assignment was to reflect on the historical milestone of AUB's coed centennial, to discuss the the biggest challenges women still face today, and to present ideas of what AUB can do to address those challenges and work towards more inclusive and just societies.

During the event, the three winners of the Founders Day student essay contest were announced by the president of the university, and received their awards. Rita-Maria Ibrahim, a junior at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS), majoring in English literature, with a minor in both gender studies and creative writing, received the first prize and read her essay at the event.

The second prize was awarded to Yalda Negah, who joined AUB from Afghanistan as one of the university's outstanding scholars in the transformative Education for Leadership in Crisis scholarship program. She is now in her third semester in FAS, with a view to majoring in political studies.

As for the third prize, it was awarded to Hussein Mousa, a senior at FAS majoring in economics and minoring in Arabic literature. He is the Arabic senior editor of AUB's student publication Outlook and ranked first in the Lebanese Baccalaureate exams of 2019, in the economics and social sciences section.

The keynote address The event's keynote address on commemorating excellence and celebrating hope and equal opportunity was given by Sheikha Altaf Al Sabah, researcher, author, and lecturer on the material culture and traditional textile arts of Kuwait. She is a pioneering AUB alumna with both a bachelor's and master's degree in anthropology (BA '71, MA '75).

“It is especially poignant to have Sheikha Al Sabah, an accomplished scholar, cultural champion, distinguished author, and advocate as our keynote speaker for this Founders Day, as we celebrate our coed centennial and 100 years of empowering women," said Dr. Khuri as he introduced her during the event.

Sheikha Al Sabah is a member of AUB's International Advisory Council. She is also honorary president of Sadu House, a cultural center and museum in the heart of Kuwait City.

In her speech, she shared some of her own life experiences and efforts that were meaningful to her journey of knowledge and learning. She also spoke about some of the achievements accomplished by women at AUB and in Kuwait.

“Despite the many challenges that still face the Arab world, and women in particular, I see the potential for reform, to be through education and academic scholarship. In many Arab and Gulf countries, women studies have become a part of the state building agenda, where education continues to contribute to building just and inclusive societies," she said.

“I truly believe that teaching women studies is one of the major drivers for social change in any society," she said, explaining why she supported in 2017 the establishment of the Altaf S. Al Sabah Visiting Chair in Women and Societal Development Studies at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at AUB. She added that this is where “the high scholarly context, diverse and enlightened dialogue, can foster further change and development.

She ended with a message to all the young men and women students at AUB, “you are in one of the most distinguished educational institutions in the Arab world and beyond, take advantage of this great opportunity, maximize your human values and capabilities, realize your intellectual potential, aspire to be inspired, and in the words of Mahatma Gandhi, be the change you wish to see in the world."

Founders Day

Founders Day is a perfect time to renew the dedication to the Purposes of the PTA that were defined by PTA’s founders more than a century ago. Each year in February, PTA honors the three founders as well as past and present PTA leaders. Through special programs and events, PTA also attempts to increase the awareness of its members and the community by highlighting achievements, activities, projects and goals.

The Founders Day celebration was created in 1910 by Mrs. David O. Mears, a charter member of the National Congress of Mothers founded by Alice McLellan Birney and Phoebe Apperson Hearst in Washington, D.C., February 17, 1897. The Founders Day observance has continued through the change of organization names in 1925 to the National Congress of Parents and Teachers, and the uniting in 1970 with the National Congress of Colored Parents and Teachers, founded in 1926 by Selena Sloan Butler, to become the National PTA ( A Brief History: Working Together for Children Since 1987 ).

Issues concerning immigrants, homeless children and families, the unemployed and the uneducated, and numerous health and safety concerns still need attention. However, through PTA advocacy to enact and enforce laws, children’s health is better protected and children are better fed, housed and educated, with parents more involved in their upbringing. The vision of PTA’s founders has been realized in many ways, and now it is up to present PTA members to continue the vision.

Founders Day Freewill Offering: “PTA Birthday Gift”

Donations collected during Founders Day observances benefit the entire organization: unit, council, district PTAs, State and National PTA. California State PTA returns one-fourth of its offering to the district PTA and retains one-fourth for its work throughout the state. Half of the offering is sent to National PTA ( Unit Remittance Form ).

District PTAs use the funds to:

  • Organize new units and councils. Strengthen PTAs and PTSAs. Train leaders through workshops and conferences. Offer leadership training and parliamentary procedure courses. Promote PTA publications and special projects. Plan special contacts with teachers and administrators to increase the value of the PTA to school and community.

California State PTA uses the funds to:

  • Service new units and councils. Strengthen PTAs and PTSAs.
  • Provide special assistance to council and district PTAs through workshops and leadership conferences. Conduct field services in local areas by California State PTA officers and members of commissions. Perform regional extension work throughout the state. Counsel with individuals and groups.

National PTA uses the funds to:

  • Provide requested field services (instructions, guidance and other assistance for California State PTA leaders). Train leaders. Promote contacts with educational groups. Disseminate materials that will further the aims and Purposes of PTA. Hold conferences. Provide extension of parent-teacher services throughout the country.
