Applying for Study Permit in Canada June 1, 2022.

Akash Kumar Flat No. 100, Triveni Apartments Pitam Pura, NEW DELHI, 110034 INDIA

High Commission of Canada to India, in New Delhi Visa Section 7/8 Shantipath Chanakyapuri, New Delhi 110 021, India

Attn.: Visa officer Subject: Canadian Study Permit Application

Dear Sir/Madam,

I have been accepted into a graduate program at the University of Waterloo in Canada and will apply for a study permit. I have included my original university acceptance letter with this application.

I am a qualified software developer with six years of experience in India’s IT industry. I have held this position for the last two years at a sizable IT company in New Delhi.

Thanks to the computer science degree I obtained from Delhi Technological University in 2016, I was able to secure a very profitable job. During my studies, I learned how to design and write codes that are used in a variety of software programs worldwide. India’s software development industry is growing rapidly, and as a result, many companies are looking for developers who specialize in specific programming languages. Therefore, I am eager to expand my knowledge and skills by enrolling in an international graduate program.

I chose a graduate program focusing on Programming Languages at the University of Waterloo because it is among the best educational institutions globally for this study area. Many of the program’s professors have contributed to innovative developments in the software programming field. The Waterloo-Kitchener area is also renowned for producing many talented individuals in the computer science field, leading to the region being referred to as Canada’s Silicon Valley. By contrast, my educational prospects in India are pretty limited. New Delhi is a major city with many reputable educational institutions. However, none offer the graduate program I am pursuing. I also believe being immersed in a North American setting will allow me to learn to adapt my skills to multinational companies once I return to India.

I have paid the University of Waterloo CAD 14,000  to cover my fees for my first semester. You can verify this transaction in the attached bank draft with my application.

I have also found accommodation in a dormitory on the university campus. The dormitory’s address is as follows:

Suite #303, Village 1, University of Waterloo 200 University Ave W Waterloo, ON, N2J 4B6, Canada

I have paid my accommodation fees for the first semester. You can contact the University administrator in charge of the dormitory at the following phone number: +1 519-888-4567 ext. 84086

Funds Available

I have INR 8,100,000 or CAD 50,000 in my Indian bank account. You can verify this amount in the bank statement I have supplied with the application package. You can also verify that I have steadily built up these savings from the monthly salary deposits I received from my job at Linus Technologies in New Delhi.

I intend to return to India after completing my graduate program at the University of Waterloo. Both my elderly parents (picture attached) reside in New Delhi, and I plan to take care of them after returning. I also plan to take over managing their rental property in the city. My older brother (picture attached) will be performing this duty while I complete my studies in Canada.

I would greatly appreciate your support in issuing a study permit before August 1, 2022, so I may depart for Canada by August 15, 2022, for my program’s orientation. I have included all the relevant information requested in the original application package. Please contact me at +91 1234-567890 or [email protected] if you need me to submit additional information or documents for my application.

Yours Sincerely,

____[SIGNATURE LINE]____ Akash Kumar

  • Be Clear and Concise: Include all the required information in your cover letter. Stick to the point and avoid rambling; otherwise, you risk losing your reader’s attention.
  • Highlight your Strengths: In addition to providing basic information about yourself, the cover letter is also an opportunity to highlight your strengths as a candidate for a student visa. Remember to mention any relevant academic achievements or extracurricular activities demonstrating your commitment to learning.
  • Explain your motivation.

Studying in Germany

Cover Letter for German Student Visa

cover letter for studying in germany

The cover letter for German student visa is very important and most of the international students ignore it completely when applying for their student visa .

What is a Cover Letter?

Basically, a cover letter is a document where a student visa applicant describes the purpose of its visit to Germany in some details and lists attached documents in its application.

That said, a cover letter is the equivalent of an interview where officials are willing to ask candidates about the purpose of the visit. Since most embassies are now handling the visa application process to outsource companies there are fewer officials to conduct one-on-one interviews, and a Cover letter plays a major role in the final decision about your German student visa application.

A precise understanding of what a Cover Letter is essential because it gives you first-off hints as what you need to write down on that paper and to adjust your writing style appropriately.

Cover Letter for German Student Visa Application

As per every visit in a foreign country, the authorities in that particular country are highly interested to have some information about who you are and what is the main purpose of your visit. This is done so they can evaluate the risks of admitting applicants who may pose certain threats to the security of the population in that country.

Besides explaining the intention of your visit, on a Cover Letter, you must also state your financial resources to let authorities know you have the required funds to cover living and studying-related costs in Germany.

Why it is important?

Germany ranks among the world’s top five popular study destinations and a large number of international students apply for a student visa each year. In addition, there are also applications for other kinds of visas, accounting for a heavy workload at German embassies. With that in mind, a Cover letter will save them (and you too) tons of time to make a decision on your application.

One cannot say the entire decision on your visa application relies on the Cover Letter but it’s true it plays a significant role.

What Should Contain?

There is not a standard model of what a Cover Letter must look like, but surely there are some general principles that always apply when writing one. Since Cover Letter is very important for your German student visa application, it is crucial you follow these general rules and make proper adjustment according to your personal profile under the way.

So, what should your Cover letter for the German student visa application contain?

Essentially, you must focus on three major components:

  • A brief introduction to who you are
  • Explain the purpose of your visit to Germany
  • List the documents attached in your application file

Introduction feels the hardest part of all. Everyone feels intimidated by the idea of putting the first word on a completely blank page. We recommend you deliver as simple as possible. Remember, you’re not making a university project or a dissertation thesis. On the contrary, you should try to be as fluent and understandable as possible so the officials can scan easily through the text and get an idea of your profile.

Now comes the most important part where the whole purpose of the Cover letter relies on stating the purpose of your visit. For a perfect delivery, we highly recommend you explain your educational background and its relevance according to your study ambition in Germany.

Next, you can talk about the university and the course of your choice in Germany and some major reasons that accounted for your decision, as for example the university’s reputation and future prospects.

“My name is X and I come from Y. I hold a Bachelor degree in Engineering issued by the X University in my home country. I have been working at a local Engineering company in my country for the past two years as a Project Manager. I have an admission letter from Z University in Germany for K course and I’m looking forward to getting a German student visa to study there. The Z University is highly reputed and I believe it will provide me with a well-rounded education to help me build a successful career as an Engineer.”

Lastly, you must list the attached documents in your application file so the admission committee knows what to expect from the application before even going through it. In fact, here’s where stands a very beneficial trait of the cover letter. If there’s any document that is missing in your application, although required, you can explain the reasons why that happened.

For example, the university in your home country may need additional time to issue an official certificate of your graduation beyond the application deadline in Germany. In that case, you can explain this in the cover letter so they won’t reject your application instantly when they see there is no diploma included.

In a more detailed overview your Cover Letter for a German student visa must contain the followings:

  • The purpose of your visit to Germany
  • Basic personal information
  • Your educational profile
  • Your financial standing and resources
  • Reasons why you chose a particular course and the University
  • Why do you think a German degree is good for you
  • The list of documents included in your application

Formatting – Formatting is very important because officials are familiarized with some sorts of standard formats of Cover Letters enabling them to do a quick scanning of the information being presented there. If it doesn’t have good formatting it may seem highly unprofessional and confuse the commission, which deals with your visa application.

An acceptable format of a Cover letter for the German student visa must be structured as follows:

At the top left corner of the Cover Letter write the date at which the document is written.

Below it, write the German Embassy in your home country to which you’re sending the document.

Your personal information, so the receiver (the embassy) to whom you have written. Your name, your surname and Passport number may suffice.

Dear Sir/Madam “to whom it concerns”.

Clearly state why you are writing the letter, the aimed travel date and the duration of your stay

Start by clearly showing the purpose of your visit to Germany.

Speak about your previous education and work experience and the ways it is related to your aimed course in Germany.

Shortly explain why you chose Germany and that particular university and what are your goals.

List the documents included in your application file.

Wrap it up.

Yours sincerely, Name and Surname.

Your contact information: Address, email and telephone number.

Important advice

By now you must have started to appreciate the role of a cover letter in your German student visa application and you want to make yours a one-of-a-kind. You’re just one step far from that just pay attention to the following advice

Optimize your cover letter as much as possible – Abandon the idea that you can write a wonderful piece of content at your first shot. Also, don’t aim to make a perfect Cover Letter. That is just unrealistic.  But, keep in mind that probably the whole magic of making a good cover letter for your German student visa depends on your editing. Take your time and arrange your information in the explained order and choose the most appropriate words.

Be concise – We do understand that it is hard to limit your thoughts in a single paper, but try to be more concise about what you want to exactly say. Knowing to whom you’re addressing your cover letter will also help you adjust your tone of speaking to what is required from you and choose the right words.

Seek advice from a student in Germany – There are thousands of international students currently attending university in Germany and probably there is one from your home country who you can ask for some helpful advice about your Cover Letter. It is easier to make your own cover letter if you benefit from the experience of a student who has gone through the same before you.

Pay attention to formatting – Always keep in mind that you’re writing to high authority and your document must be in accordance with some principles. Some students just write down whatever comes into their minds without respecting a well-structured order, although they don’t miss the main purpose of the Cover Letter.

Common mistakes

As long as your cover letter is in accordance with the major principles of a cover letter for a German student visa you’re good to go. But there are some mistakes that may hurt your application and often are done unconsciously.

Below are two of the most common mistakes international students do when submitting a Cover Letter for a student visa at German embassies

Too personal Cover Letter – For some, it is a bit difficult to find a balance between formal and personal language when writing a Cover Letter for a German study visa application.

Be aware that the German embassy/consulate is interested to know your educational and professional profile and your future goals and not your emotional opinion about it. If this is the case with you we recommend you ask someone who may have experience with cover letters to help you resolve this issue.

Job Application Cover Letter – Though formal details may remain the same a Cover Letter for a job application and a cover letter for a student visa are essentially different.  The tone of speaking, your standing and some details are where the main difference between these documents relies upon.

Spelling mistakes – Last, but not least important. If there are many spelling errors in your Cover Letter the commission will assess your language is not good, therefore you don’t seem to be a promising student. It is always recommended you give someone to give it a read because they may notice errors that didn’t catch your eye.

How to write a cover letter for student visa application

How to write a cover letter for student visa application

Writing a strong cover letter might help overseas students who intend to apply for a Canadian study permit increase their chances of approval. You have the chance to speak with the officers of IRCC who will be evaluating your application directly by means of your cover letter. It should specify your goals precisely, show that you are dedicated to pursuing your studies in Canada, and detail how you fulfill the prerequisites for a study permit. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll explore the essential components of a student visa application cover letter and offer tips to help you create an effective and persuasive document.

Your application may be rejected by the IRCC if your cover letter is poorly formatted and organized, as this could cause misunderstandings or confusion on their part. Because of this, candidates need to make sure that every part of their cover letter follows a set format. Every section should be precise and succinct, from introducing yourself and your academic goals to proving your financial stability and ties to your native nation.

Understanding Cover Letters

Your reasons for selecting Canada as your study destination, your travel schedule, and your post-study objectives are all detailed in your cover letter for a Canadian student visa. Along with highlighting your professional and academic accomplishments, it should show that you are qualified for the study permit.

Two primary cover letter formats may be needed when applying for a Canadian student visa: the Statement of Purpose (SOP) and the Letter of Explanation (LOE). They both have comparable functions, but their settings are different.

In order to obtain a study visa for Canada, first-time applicants usually need to submit a Statement of Purpose (SOP). It gives a thorough explanation of your motivation for studying in Canada, your objectives, and how your education will help you achieve your long-term objectives.

In contrast, a Letter of Explanation (LOE) is intended for individuals who are reapplying for a study visa to Canada following a prior denial. In this letter, applicants can discuss the reasons behind the rejection and provide details on how they overcame or remedied any problems that resulted in their previous application being rejected.

Why a Cover Letter is Important for a Student Visa Application

A student visa cover letter’s main goal is to give immigration authorities a thorough grasp of your goals, experience, and future plans. It provides context for your application and acts as a personal introduction. Using the cover letter, you can:

  • Explain Your Intentions: Explain why you’re seeking a student visa, outlining your academic objectives and how they connect with the program you’ve chosen.
  • Demonstrate Your Ties to Your Home Country: Immigration officials want to be convinced you want to finish your education and then return home. In the cover letter, highlight your ties to your native country—whether they are familial, professional, or property-related.
  • Clarify Any Discrepancies: In the cover letter, you should address any gaps in your application or any unexpected circumstances. Showcase Your Financial Capability: Provide an explanation of your financial strategy for both your education and living expenditures, proving that you have the money to do so.

Components of a Student Visa Cover Letter

A successful cover letter should contain the following elements:

  • Contact Information: At the top of the letter, include your full name, address, phone number, and email address. Ensure this information matches what’s on your visa application form.

A cover letter for a German student visa is an official document and must follow a specific format. There is a format that the officials in embassies follow for quick scanning of the documents, and it is advised that the aspirants follow the same. If students do not format their cover letter well, it might end up looking unprofessional. So, here’s how they should format their cover letter:

  • The date should always be at the very top left corner.
  • Mention the German embassy’s name
  • Mention all the personal details, like name, address and passport number.
  • Address the official.
  • Mention relevant educational and professional work experience.
  • Write down the course name and university in Germany where they are seeking admission.
  • Wrap it up in a respectful manner.
  • Lastly, pen down their email address and contact.

Keep it short and to the point. The cover letter should have all the information in a few lines. Students should write down their purpose of visit and other required information on a single cover letter page. Choose a formal tone and the right order of words.

  • Pay attention to the format

A formal document has an order, sequence, and format. The format is followed by the officials while checking the applications. If a student does not follow the format, their cover letter might confuse the officials while scanning their visa application.

  • Seek advice

Try and get help from someone who is already studying in Germany. They will help students with the basics and offer ideas to make their cover letters more persuasive.

Mistakes in a cover letter may result in straightaway rejection of a student’s visa application. Since there is a cut-throat competition among international students who want to study in Germany, you cannot afford to commit any mistakes. There are some very common mistakes that students end up committing, and since this is going to be your first time applying for a student visa, they need to be careful.

  • Too personal

A formal cover letter should not be very personal and must not include requests. It should talk about their ambition of studying in Germany. Students should keep their tone formal yet polite to make sure they get a chance. Do not use informal words or phrases.

  • Spelling and grammatical errors

Be careful and check thoroughly for language errors before submitting the cover letter. Use simple words, and do not go for difficult vocabulary that might increase the risk of spelling mistakes. Simple and precise sentences without any careless mistakes will work best for them.

  • Mistake in the format

Always follow the cover letter format properly. It should be in the right order. Do not get confused with the structure of the cover letter that the German embassy officials want to be follow.

Comparison between Cover letter, Statement of Purpose, and Motivation Letter

What are the chances of German student visa rejections?

Germany is well known for its tuition-free education system. Therefore, the fact that a poor financial situation is the most frequent cause of a student visa being denied may surprise many overseas students. The German government wants to make sure a student has enough financial assistance to cover other living expenditures like housing, food, transit, and other costs. The German government wants students to concentrate on achieving high academic standards rather than taking jobs to make ends meet or, worse still, engaging in criminal activity. Due to this, the primary ground for denying a student visa to Germany is a lack of sufficient financial means to support oneself there.

We are a dedicated team of study-abroad experts, ensuring intensive research and comprehensive information in each of our blogs. If you are an aspiring student who wants to travel and study abroad, then you need to secure a student visa. This process involves presenting different documents, and one of the most important ones is the cover letter. This letter can make a big difference in your application. It can convey your motivation, goals, and intentions, and it can help the embassy officials understand your situation and context. Therefore, it is crucial to craft a well-written and compelling cover letter.

To help you with this task, we have devised a step-by-step guide on the best structure and content for a cover letter sample for student visa.

Step 1: Introduce Yourself and Your Purpose

The first paragraph should introduce yourself, your purpose, and your background. You should explain your intent to study abroad and the school or program you are applying to. You can also mention your academic achievements, relevant experience, and language proficiency. This section should capture the attention of the reader and give them a clear idea of who you are.

Step 2: Explain Your Financial Situation

The second paragraph should focus on your financial situation. You need to explain in detail how you plan to fund your studies abroad, and what sources of income or support you have. How to write Cover Letter for your visa application?

If you have an appointment for a German student visa, you will be required to submit a cover letter at the time of the appointment. This is something that is not mentioned in the checklist provided by the German Embassy. I almost forgot about it and had to write it on the last day after a friend informed me about the requirement. I don’t want you to make the same mistake, so I will guide you on how to write it. Below, I have explained each step in detail with examples to help you write your cover letter on your own.

Let’s refer to the top section of the cover letter as the “Header.” This section typically includes your details, the recipient’s information, and a subject line explaining the purpose of the cover letter.

Personal Details : To begin, include your full name at the very top of the cover letter. On the following line, provide your address, and on the subsequent line, include your mobile number and email address. Double-check the accuracy of your personal details before submitting the cover letter.

Recipient Information : Next, clearly state the name of the organization or individual you are addressing your cover letter to. In this case, it would be the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in New Delhi.

Subject : Write a concise and informative subject line that clearly states the purpose of your cover letter. Tailor the subject line to reflect the specific course you wish to participate in, thereby indicating your interest and intention.

When writing your cover letter, it is important to be concise and to the point. Avoid beating around the bush and address the main purpose directly. Visa officers are often busy, so it’s crucial to respect their time. In the example below, the cover letter starts by stating the name and passport number.

In the following paragraph, provide information about the university you are enrolled in or if you have received an invitation to take an exam from the university. Discuss the specific course you intend to pursue at the selected university and explain how you meet the qualifications for it. If there is a language requirement, mention your language proficiency.

The next section should provide more details about your chosen course. This will demonstrate to the visa officer that you have conducted thorough research and are genuinely interested in the program, rather than being just another applicant. Include information about the duration of the course, and if you are planning to attend Studienkolleg, indicate how long it will take and outline your plans for after completing it. The following is an example of the VSI Mint program at Saarland University.

Although not required, it is beneficial to present your past academic qualifications in a table format. This will allow the visa officer to easily see all your qualifications in one place.

The above-mentioned details are true and can be verified with the mark sheets attached.

Once you have discussed your courses and academic background, it’s time to outline your plan, including the intended date of your arrival in Germany and when your semester begins. You also need to address how you will finance your studies and living expenses in Germany. If you have a blocked account, you can mention it in your cover letter along with the total amount in the account.

Finally, list all the documents that you will be attaching to your visa application.

Finally, express gratitude to the visa officer and conclude your cover letter with your name and visa reference number, which you will receive upon booking an appointment with VFS.

visa cover letter for student visa

Planning to go abroad to study and take your career further ? The first thing you will need is a student visa & among the first requirements would be a cover letter for student visa .

A cover letter is the only point of contact between you and the visa officer and this is where you can convince them on why your visa needs to be approved . A strong cover letter therefore is very important, especially for a visa like student since there has been many cases where it has been used for working part time instead of studying.

This article shows you how to write a perfect letter in 5 minutes using FlightGen App .

Is a cover letter needed for student visa ?

Yes . But it is good news as this is the only place where you can speak to the visa consulate and make a case of your visa approval.

In fact, vfs.com asks you to bring a cover letter along with you when you apply for a visa with them.

visa cover letter for student visa

What does a cover letter mean for student visa ?

A cover letter is simply a document addressing the consulate who is issuing your student visa explaining the facts of your travel such as travel dates, purpose of travel, documents submitted towards your visa & your contact information that makes a case for the approval of your visa.

Also the letter needs to be in an a4 sheet pdf format signed by you.

What to write in a cover letter for Student ?

For student visa the required documents would be :

  • Addressing the consulate of application
  • Trip Start date and End Date
  • Purpose of travel (which university, what course)
  • proof of sustenance as in bank statements of funds
  • Documents submitted for your visa.
  • Your Contact information if the consulate wants to get in touch for some reason .

It is often expensive and complicated for an American to get a student visa in a foreign country — yet many people are confounded as to why the U.S. must have immigration laws.

The priority of most politicians is to get reelected. The number of people who vote illegally in this country is high enough to make this contingent politically expedient, so most media have changed their information priority from “correct” to “politically correct.” That’s why we are bombarded with the term “undocumented” instead of “illegal” when referencing illegal immigrants. Anyone who dares call these people what they is labeled a “hater.” We don’t castigate foreign countries for protecting their borders, we only do it to our honest citizens for demanding the same.

Using this same logic, shall we refer to the latest rash of retail gang looters as “undocumented customers” and issue them free bonus cards?

We must confront the realities of our time and uphold the rule of law, lest we become another banana republic being fled. Voters are discouraged from doing this when incidents and situations are improperly described.

The "deafening silence" on climate change during the election campaign has been criticised by major business group the CBI.

But the next government cannot claim to be pro-growth without also being pro-green, Rain Newton-Smith, chief executive of the CBI, will tell a conference in London today.

With just three days to go until the general election, she will highlight the "deafening silence from all the parties about the issues of climate change, biodiversity loss, net zero and our planet".

But there is a risk in trying to "separate the economy from net zero", she will say, adding: "Whoever forms the next government can't be pro-growth and deliver for our people, planet and communities, without being pro-green."

Rishi Sunak and Sir Keir Starmer both travelled to Grimsby to answer residents' questions for Sky's The Battle For Number 10 programme on 12 June.

In the final week of campaigning, we asked five residents what they have made of the national campaign:

It's not just the UK gripped by an election this week.

In France, Marine Le Pen's far-right National Rally party is on course to take control of the country's parliament - should first-round results be replicated in the decisive second round this weekend.

It's worth noting that Emmanuel Macron will remain president, but a fresh prime minister is on the cards ( read more here ).

Labour wants 'better' deal with France

Asked if an incoming Labour government would find it more difficult to work with France and strike a better deal with the European Union if Paris shifts to the right, Sir Keir Starmer struck an optimistic tone.

Speaking on the campaign trail in Birmingham, he said: "I will work with any government in Europe and across the world if we are elected in to serve the country.

"For me, that's what serious government is about."

Sir Keir stressed his desire for a "stronger and better" deal with France for tackling small boat crossings, and to renegotiate with the EU too.

But he stressed the French and British elections were both still in the balance despite the sense of inevitability surrounding both.

"I genuinely don't want to get ahead of myself," he added.

Starmer vows to maintain support for Ukraine

Sir Keir also dismissed questions on whether he'd meet Vladimir Putin.

He said the Tory government and Labour opposition had "spoken with one voice" on the war in Ukraine, and that won't change.

Should Labour win the election, Sir Keir would be set to attend a NATO summit next week in Washington.

Ed Davey may have begun the day dangling upside down from a crane on his latest stunt - but with three days to go until polling day, his electoral fortunes still hang in the balance.

Which begs the question, just what does success look like for the Liberal Democrats at this election?

As it stands, given this year's extensive boundary changes, the party are defending just eight seats, if we adjust the 2019 vote to the new map.

That equals their worst ever performance in 2015 - so presumably they're aiming higher than that.

Senior party sources are tight-lipped about putting a ceiling on their ambitions. Believe me, I've asked.

Is a historic result on the cards?

But today, one at least hinted at where they see their floor. It was suggested to me that the party has an eye on the historical record.

The largest number of Lib Dem gains at a general election was 26 seats, back in 1997. Added to their current eight, that gives a total of 34. Anything above that, it was strongly suggested, would be a good night.

Though I dare say in their heart of hearts, Lib Dem HQ will be hoping for more.

If you take the average of the five most recent MRP polls , which predict seat numbers as well as vote share, you get 58. The least generous of them gives the Lib Dems 49 seats.

Polls are just polls, of course. They're not gospel. But one senior strategist told me his expectations were "higher this week than they were last week, which in turn is higher than they were at the start of the campaign, and that's higher than they were at the start of the year".

I'll leave it to you to decide whether those thrice-risen expectations are likely to have gone beyond a mere 34 seats, even if the party won't spell it out publicly.

The cost of living crisis has been one of the key issues of this general election campaign.

In some very welcome news for households, the energy price cap has fallen today - but it is expected to tick up again in a few months.

So, is now the time to fix? Will prices ever return to prior levels? We're answering these questions and many more in our Money blog:

It's the final week of election campaigning and leaders are leaning on all the old favourites in a bid to woo voters.

Keir Starmer's hammering home the need for change, Ed Davey is auditioning for a future series of Total Wipeout, and the PM has been warning voters not to hand Labour a "supermajority".

It's a term the Tories have been banding about for weeks - but what does it mean, and why does Rishi Sunak think it'll work?

What's the PM getting at?

"Supermajority" is being used by Mr Sunak to refer to the scale of the Labour victory being projected by many pollsters - with some saying they could top the 419 seats won by Tony Blair in 1997.

That gave Labour a majority of 179, but with the Tories tipped to do even worse than they did back then (165 seats), Sir Keir Starmer could end up enjoying the biggest parliamentary advantage on record - well over 200 seats according to some projections.

Mr Sunak has said such a "supermajority" would make it harder for the Labour Party to be held by to account in the Commons.

Is he right to sound the alarm?

Well, no - because the concept of a supermajority is meaningless in British democracy.

It's a familiar phrase in US politics, where a supermajority of two-thirds really does matter in some votes.

For example, the Congress requires particularly significant legislation - like impeaching a president - to hit that two-thirds threshold.

In the UK, a governing party only has to hold more than half of the 650 seats in the Commons, whether that be 326 or much more.

A majority of one could be just as effective as something much bigger - so long as they keep their MPs in line.

Some have argued that the "supermajority" concept isn't without merit, for example in referendums, but it's certainly not relevant to this election despite the Tories' best efforts to make it so.

Whether it's healthy for parliament to be as dominated by one party as it could be from 5 July is another question - but whatever the majority Labour might have, there'll be nothing super about it.

Rishi Sunak is riding two horses at once in the final furlongs of this election campaign.

As you'd expect, he's denying he's given up trying to win this vote, telling reporters – as with England last night – "it's not over until it's over".

But he's also spending an awful lot of time conjuring up the image of what a big Labour victory would look like.

Speaking at a distribution plant in Stoke-on-Trent, Mr Sunak went as far as referring directly to Sir Keir Starmer's "deputy prime minister and his foreign secretary".

The aim is to try to unsettle wavering Tory voters who may be thinking of jumping ship or simply staying at home on Thursday.

"I don't want Britain to sleepwalk into the danger of what an unchecked Labour government with a supermajority would mean," he said.

'Supermajority'? There's no such thing

It's worth pointing out that no UK government is ever "unchecked" – that's why we have opposition parties, elections, and the media -  and in our parliamentary system there is no such thing as a "supermajority".

But Rishi Sunak is using this as a device to try to paint a picture of what a Labour government would mean, in his view, for tax, migration and – perhaps most pointedly – security.

Asked if he genuinely believed Vladimir Putin was sitting in Moscow hoping for a Starmer government, the prime minister said: "Yeah, I worry about our nation's security under Keir Starmer."

There's a risk in this approach, though. Pollsters warn sending out signals to your own voters they may be on the losing side can depress turnout.

Others will wonder if it all simply looks a bit desperate.

Rishi Sunak today suggested Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has not done enough to tackle the allegations of racism within his party.

It comes after campaigners in Clacton were filmed making racist comments by undercover reporters, including about the prime minister.

Mr Sunak told reporters in Staffordshire said Mr Farage has "got some questions to answer".

"I think he described the comments as inappropriate last time I heard - they weren't inappropriate, they were racist and appalling," he said.

The PM said that "multiple Reform candidates and campaigners" had been caught "openly espousing racist and misogynistic views" showed voters "something about the culture" within the party.

Mr Farage's party has dropped several candidates because of racist remarks they have made, which led to another disowning the party and backing the Tories.

Continuing his out-of-the-box campaign stunts, Sir Ed Davey was seen to be taking part in a Zumba class earlier today.

He was whisked away from the scene of this morning's bungee jump in East Sussex to attend the outdoor class with members of the public in Berkshire.
