Secondly, the biggest problem in our society has been the problem of malnutrition. The campaign “Beti Bachao Beti Padhao” launched by recent government would also be progressed by me but at a fast pace so that the narrow mindset and superstitions in Indian minds can be washed away and make them realize the importance of girl child as educating one girl educates the entire family.

Thus, India needs to give more respect to girl child and its education as they are our future generation who will make us proud. Still girl child is ignored in various rural families and this thinking needs to broaden up. Sex determination tests have also added complexity. If I did become the Prime Minister the issue of sex determination will be looked at by creating stringent norms against those practicing it.

How can you decide what future a girl will bring to your family? Societies need to be educated that girls are also human beings, they too are the creations of god, and they should not be killed just to reduce the burden of the families bearing them. Since early years of my growing stages, I nurtured the dream of becoming the P.M. of our country. There are certain thoughts in my mind that I would speak before you and if I get the opportunity I would turn them into practice by achieving the dream of becoming the Prime Minister.

India can be prosperous once it’s free from all the evils present in our society. These social evils include not only the age old caste system, but also corruption that is very much present in our country’s administration. Corruption can be fought when everything in the government becomes transparent before the eyes of the people. Right to Information Act (RTI) is a great initiative, but it needs much more stringent norms so that it can be well implemented.

We all must agree that our head bends down when somebody call us a poor country due to its population. There is a need of rigorous Family Planning norms in place so that people realize their mistakes. This could be solved through awareness campaigns about family planning measures and rules.

India has been always dependent on agriculture for their subsistence. India’s agriculture gets affected due to the uncertainty in our weather conditions which ultimately leads to agricultural losses and farmers are forced to commit suicides as they are not able to repay their agricultural debts. This is also a major reason for unemployment and criminal activities in our country. As a Prime Minister, I would promote a balanced growth of agriculture and other industries in our country so that we are not entirely dependent on agriculture. We need to make people realize that other non-agricultural activities could also help sustain an individual.

At the end I would like to say that no country could be prosperous when there is a huge gap between its rich and poor population. Then, I would like to keep a check on the public distribution system and make available the essential commodities to the needy people at the subsidized prices while ensuring that the prices of the commodities remain fairly under control.

While the rich people should be made to pay a heavy tax; the middle class on the other hand should be spared. If anyone was to take my opinion, I would say that even the salaried people should be exempted from paying the tax. The next most essential thing is the strengthening of our education system and raising its standard from the grass root level. Every student should be entitled to take admission based on his/her merit and no student should be debarred from taking admission on financial grounds. Besides, I would want to do away with all the reservations based on caste system, but rather on economic grounds.

In the first place, my country is impoverished. Millions of people dwell in extreme poverty. I would take steps to abolish poverty. The poor must not be in shortage of any of the essentials. I would also have plots for the refinement of national health.

Another significant drawback in our country is ignorance and illiteracy, which should be eradicated. I would prioritize the achievement of 100% literacy. Also, higher education would be based on merit. Gifted people would be provided with proper placements. Required steps would be taken to pluck unemployment.

Next, I would charge heavy taxes on the wealthy and use the money to help the country. It is not fair that a few wealthy people live in luxury, and the rest should be inferior. I aim to abolish the significant disparity in income that exists at present between the rich and the poor.

Then I would control the price rise. The distribution system of essential commodities would be made more effective. The hoarders and business people would not take under the advantage of things because of strict rules. Law and order would be maneuvered for smugglers, hoarders, and black marketeers, and will be mended at all costs. Corruption would be stamped out altogether.

A problem that is neutralizing all efforts to improve the standard of living of the masses is that of overpopulation. Some of its direct consequences are malnutrition, insufficient medical care, high infant mortality rates, and problems of aged people. Steps have to be taken to avert this alarming growth. It will be my first duty as Prime Minister to turn to this problem of population growth and tackle it.

Another aim of mine is to make our country self-sufficient and self-reliant. I know that we cannot rely on ourselves for everything. Yet I would make people realize that we should depend on ourselves as far as possible.

People would be schooled about their duties provided by the constitution. Attention will be given to immoral elements to punish them severely. I would prioritize establishing a society free from fear and insecurity. Restoral of peace would be the final goal of my tenure. The dignity of the individuals and the more exceptional qualities of the citizens would be elevated.

I would strengthen my country’s defense system. We must be ready to fence ourselves in case of a foreign attack. Then we will never be taken unawares. We will be able to meet and successfully repel all foreign attacks.

Pen in hand, I wonder, what I should write. What an idea! Can I become the Prime Minister of India? Well, why not? There are no basic qualifications for that. I am a citizen of free India. I have all the qualifications of a modern leader.

If, by some stroke of luck, I become an all- powerful person in India even for a short period, I am going to change the face of this country. The first thing I shall lay my hand on would be education. I will change the entire system of education and make it purposeful, useful, interesting and easy. I will change the entire system of education. There will be no pass-fail system. Everyone who completes his courses will be declared successful. Teaching and testing will go hand in hand. More stress will be laid on practical work and vocational training. Education will be free and universal. Open textbook system of examination followed by viva-voce test will be introduced at all levels. Teachers will be asked to re-orient themselves for the new challenges and steps will be taken to make the teaching profession really attractive. Sub-standard and ill-equipped teachers will be thrown out and really talented people will be inducted into the profession.

I shall introduce some drastic changes in the system of elections. No person who is not educated up the matriculation stage, will be allowed to contest an election. Elections will be financed by the State. Defection will not be allowed. Elections will be free and fair. Really, capable men will be encouraged to come forward and join the government. All parties will be allowed a free use of the All India Radio and the Doordarshan. Independents and regional parties will not be allowed to contest.

There will be equality of opportunity for all. The system of reservations of jobs will be scrapped. Merit will be the only criterion for jobs and admissions. There will be no place for nepotism, corruption and recommendations.

I shall try to establish a truly socialistic pattern of society. The gap between the rich and the poor will be narrowed down. Nobody will be allowed to hold more than one house. Right to property will be taken away. The rich will not be allowed to become richer beyond a certain limit and the poor will be taken away. Agriculture will be given the highest priority. Family planning will be strictly enforced to achieve a target of zero growth. Character building will also receive an important place. Textbooks will be re-written to build up character, a sense of nationalism and patriotism. Every student will be made to feel that he is an Indian first and an Indian last. They will be made to participate to constructive activities and will be called upon to build a new India free from poverty, dirt and lethargy. Sports and cultural activities will be encouraged on a big scale. Sportsmen would be caught young and given an intensive training so that they bring a fair name to the country in various international meets.

Under my able stewardship, the country will march on the greater and greater prosperity. Evils like corruption, smuggling and hoarding will become things of the past. Our country will be a heaven of peace and prosperity. In the international field, India will occupy a place of honour. All this is no bragging or self-praise. Nothing is impossible. I shall do my best to fulfill the dreams of Mahatma Gandhi the Father of the Nation. In a very short time, my country will become a land of peace and prosperity where every head is high, where every hand is busy, and where every heart is happy.

I wish I were the Prime Minister of India so that I might serve my country in most humble manner. My next priority as a Prime Minster would be that India continues to acquire strength so that she can face internal disturbances and external aggression from any quarters. I would not allow any complacence in this regard, because a weak nation always invites invaders. Armed forces of the country would be well – provided in all respects so that no enemy dares have evil designs against our sovereignty.

However, I would continue to follow the policy of peaceful co-existence and maintain friendly relations with our neighboring countries like China, Pakistan, Srilanka and Bangladesh. India would not join any power blocs but she would always take keen interest in the non- aligned movement. She would work for the welfare of mankind and endeavour to bring about a new economic order so that the developed countries of the world may not exploit the developing countries.

India is a country with a glorious past and it should be our effort to preserve our cherished culture and safeguard our independence and integrity through all possible effort. The spirit of true nationalism needs to be improved in the people to work for its progress by leaps and bounds and fulfil the dreams of our great leaders who sacrificed their lives for her freedom.

India is a democratic republic, in which the legislators are elected through a direct election. Prime Minister is the leader of the Party that wins the election at the centre.

It means that the person, who is to become the Prime Minister, must have a strong and long active political career. I have no such background and I’m not sure if I’ll be having such a background as I grow up. Therefore, the chances of my becoming the Prime Minister of India are almost nil. In spite of this, I do not find anything wrong in imaging myself to be the Prime Minister of India.

Thus, if I become the Prime Minister of India, I’ll do certain daring things which will be very useful for the Indian nation and the Indian people.

First of all, a country must be very strong in military and economic terms. So, I’ll start many factories in India itself to manufacture the latest and most supplicated weapons for the defence of the country. As for the economic development I’ll pay more attention to rapid industrialization and exports to make India a rich country.

The common people are more concerned with their comforts. I’ll start several social safety measures like old age and widow pension.

I’ll try to tackle some knotty problems on war-footing. Among such problems I’ve listed poverty, unemployment, illiteracy, female foeticide, corruption, fake currency, terrorism etc.

I’ll pay special attention to the problems of women, children, youth and senior citizens. I hope you’ll all cooperate with me to make India strong and the Indian people rich and happy. I’ll however, give full attention to national intergratism and world peace also.

The Prime Minister of India is the most powerful man in the country. He rules the root. Though the highest office is that of the President, yet the Prime Minister is more powerful. The President is a ceremonial head. The Prime Minister rules over about 85 crore men, women and children of the country. No doubt, if wishes were horses, beggars would ride, but who knows a stroke of good luck may elevate me to this high position in the country. For example, take Shri Lai Bahadur Shastri, who has been one of our Prime Ministers. When he was a student, he too, thought this high office beyond his reach. But by dint of hard work and a stroke of good luck he became the Prime Minister of India after Pt. Nehru ‘s death.

Even if I never become a Prime Minister, I have my own views of a Prime Minister and what he should do in the present circumstances. But I wish I were the Prime Minister to put my ideals and ideas into practice. If I were the Prime Minister of India, I would first of all root out corruption. Corruption is a great bane. It has spread over all walks of life, including the administration, like a wild fire. Let alone the petty government servants, even people in high authority and government positions are not free from it. The politicians and political leaders have virtually vitiated the whole atmosphere. Every now and then there are corruption charges against them in the Parliament, State Assemblies and in public. You cannot get any work done unless you grease the palm of the concerned officials. Similarly, businessmen, traders and others indulge in dishonest, unethical and corrupt trade practices. They evade taxes, adulterate commodities, and influence people in power with their money and bribery. Nepotism, favoritism, etc., have become the order of the day. I would like to eradicate corruption by rewarding honest and sincere government and public servants. The black marketeers, hoarders and corrupt officials would be dealt with very strictly and suitably punished. People stoop too low to have money. They are ready even to betray India in order to get rich overnight. I would do my utmost as the Prime Minister to control and then to eradicate corruption.

Our successive governments and their leaders have had been following the policy of ‘divide and rule’ inherited from the British rulers. They have been using different classes, castes and communities as their vote banks. It has given rise to inter-caste fights, quarrels, communal riots and disturbances. I would see that there are no reservations of any kind on the basis of caste and community. The concept of minority and majority is basically wrong. It creates tensions, divisions and heart-burning. Everybody is equally an Indian. Then why should there be-any discrimination in the name of minority, backwardness and castes. I would create job opportunities for all. Every unemployed person would be given suitable job according to his or her qualifications and merits. In giving jobs merit would be given the highest priority. On this point there would be no compromise. The people who are really financially and socially weak would be given sufficient and far better opportunities to improve their lot through education, training and financial aid in the form of liberal stipends, scholarships and other allowances. Moreover, there would be a uniform civil code for all. I would make the registration of marriages compulsory and devise effective means to eradicate the evils of dowry. Special efforts would be taken for education and professional training of the women, handicapped and economically weaker sections of the society. But as far employment is concerned there would be no reservations at all.

I would leave no stone unturned to raise the prestige of India in the world community. I would make India strong, self.. reliant and sufficient on every front. I would see that India becomes a major world power in terms of defense and financial position. We would produce our own war-planes, guns and other defense equipment and even earn foreign exchange by selling them in the international market. The pace of industrialisation and agricultural production would be accelerated and exports would be given much impetus. 1 would see that people are hard working, honest, full of the sense of pride being Indians, that they become prosperous through honest and industrious means. I would improve the living standards of the masses and see that the disparity between the rich and the poor is minimized.

In the field of education and training, everything would be job-oriented. The use of English will be minimized and the students would be taught through their mother tongues only. The standards of education would be improved in every respect and there would be nothing like public schools. Admissions would lie purely on the basis of merit and on no other consideration. There would be greater expansion in technical education. It would help in reducing unemployment. I would encourage self-employment. I would promote both cottage, small-scale and large-scale industries. Further the migration from the villages to the towns and cities would be checked by promoting village industries.

I will do these and many more good things to alleviate the social, economical, cultural and educational condition of the masses of India, if I were the Prime Minister. I would see that there is more and more participation of the labour in the management to eradicate the problems of strikes, lockouts, etc., in the factories and mills. Black money would be uncovered and used for national good; smugglers would be severely dealt with and extremists eradicated. The more I think about India, her people and present lot, the more strongly I wish I were the Prime Minister of India, so as to re-establish the moral and human values in every walk of our life.

If I were the Prime Minister of India, I would first dismiss all the corrupt ministers from my cabinet. After adding good, sincere and honest men and women to the cabinet, I would go in for a ‘clean up’ operation. Next, I would ensure that every single man, woman, and child became literate, and attained at least a basic education so that each could become a self-respecting individual, able to support himself and his family in an honorable way. I would create job opportunities for everybody and try to help make them grow into good citizens who value the dignity of labor. No beggar would then be seen on the streets of India. With honesty and education, progress, and quality of life would follow naturally.

Lastly, I would try to put India on top of the world by giving a boost to the tourist industry, doing away with terrorism, and reviving some of our lost culture and traditions. At the same time, I would make sure that our science and technology progresses so that my country too can find its place among the developed countries of the world.

If wishes were granted, I would definitely wish to become a Prime Minister. But the office of Prime Minister seems so distant from the reach of an ordinary student like me. Still, I have my own views about how a Prime Minister should be like. Should a fairy godmother ever smile on me, I have my own agenda which I would try to implement in our current political system for the betterment of the nation and people.

In the first place, I shall try to change the educational system of the country. The politicians would not be given any say in the educational system, as is the case these days. They seek votes in the name of caste, religion, and community. Since religion is the personal affair of every individual, I would not allow it to be played upon by the politicians. I shall sincerely try to keep violence away from the youth who are mostly infected by it.

Youths will be given jobs according to their qualifications. In my Prime Ministership, I would make education compulsory for both boys and girls up to the age of 18 yrs. I would also ban child labor and those who will still make them work will be punished heavily.

I would also implement vocational courses apart from studies in the school so that after schooling they can make careers of their own choice in life.

I shall also try to promote friendship with other countries in the world. I will invite the teams from other countries to play in India and all teams abroad.

The money spent on the purchases and ammunition would be spent on other projects from which India can truly gain.

And I would also make sure that no arms and ammunition are given in the hands of today’s youth, as it destroys their future.

To conclude, I would make India a corruption-free country.

My sense of self-respect is hurt, when I find that children of rich families get education in good schools, while those of poor families attend schools, not having proper classrooms or even black boards.

There should be no distinction and corruption in education. Another thing that is very important for a country concerns its defense forces.

As the Prime Minister of India, it would become necessary for me to keep a strong defense force, which would, able to keep away enemies from our borders.

I would also visit neighboring countries to maintain healthy and friendly relations with them. In today’s scenario, it is not possible for a country to develop in isolation.

The most important goal before the Prime Minister of India is to see the country is internally strong and this needs economics development.

As the Prime Minister of India, I would try to make India as self-sufficient as possible.

India being a democratic country holds a very important position in the world. In fact, she is the largest democracy in the world. It is but natural that every citizen can hope of becoming the prime minister of the country.

I also hope to succeed in that position one day, if I happen to outshine other students in studies and then manage to have numerous admirer who will elect me first a Member of Parliament. I shall try my best to become very popular among the elected members so that they could elect me their leader.

As a matter of fact, the prime minister is the real ruler of the country and he is responsible only to the elected body, the Lok Sabha. Whosoever is the prime minister, he wields the powers to rule the nation.

My first task after becoming the prime minister will be to choose the best ministers for my cabinet. I will further ensure that technically sound young men should also find a place in the cabinet so that their expertise is used for the betterment of the country.

Foreign dependence would be minimized as far as possible. That step would also ensure security to the nation. Special steps will be taken in the agriculture sector. Research centres will be established to get the best seeds to boost production. All facilities would be provided to the farmers.

The educational system will be totally changed. Students after getting the basic education up to 10th class would be given vocational training besides academic. All the courses will be job-oriented.

Corruption in any form will be dealt with in the strictest manner and corrupt persons will be awarded deterrent punishment. I know that ruling a nation is not an easy job. It cannot be done without the active support of the people.

I shall try my best to educate the people in order to eradicate all types of social evils. A strong sense of patriotism has to be inculcated in citizens mind. I shall take appropriate steps to revive our national pride in India only then can make progress.

He administers the whole country in every sphere of life.

Since my early childhood I had a dream to become the Prime Minister of India. I have certain ideas and ideals that I would like to put into practice. I want to make India a prosperous country. I would like to see it free from all the evils. First of all, I would like to check the corruption which has become the hotbed of administration? It has robbed India of all its vigour and vitality. It has caused an erosion in the moral values of life. It is a great hurdle on the way to progress and development of the country.

Poverty remains a big challenge for India. Even after the six decades of independence one fourth of its population is destined to live a life of want and deprivation. It is a shame for us that we are the biggest poor country in the world. A large number of people have to go to bed without food. Potable water is a rare commodity for many people living in the remote areas. They have to go to miles to take drinking water. About ten per cent of Indian villages have to go to earthen lamp. They have not been electrified until now. Life comes to a standstill with the setting of the sun. All these and many more evils that I would like to eradicate if I become the Prime Minister.

Illiteracy is another big challenge for India. About one-third of its population is still illiterate. They do not know how to read and write. This puts our head in shame. In addition, the standard of living of the common masses is very low. Moreover, illiteracy and poverty provides a breeding ground for the growth of many social evils. Illiteracy makes people an easy prey to various evils. If I become the Prime Minister I would work hard for the promotion of education. I would make education mandatory for all.

India is mainly an agricultural country. More than fifty per cent of its population still depends on agriculture. Agriculture in India is backward and dependent on rains. Rain here is uncertain and untimely. This is also a major factor causing to the overall backwardness and low standard of living of the people. As a Prime Minister I would promote industrialisation to minimise the dependence of people on agriculture. Above all, I would ensure the equitable distribution of wealth to people. I would work hard to bring social justice. I would promote good friendly relations with the neighboring countries. I would eradicate terrorism from the Indian soil. I would turn it into a country to which people would feel proud to be the Indians.

Daisy Cooper, the deputy leader of the Liberal Democrats, has said the UK "deserves so much better" than the leaders' debate held tonight.

Reacting to the clash between Rishi Sunak and Sir Keir Starmer, she said: "Tonight the audience spoke for the nation when they asked: is this really the best we've got?

"Our country deserves so much better than what we watched this evening.

"Liberal Democrats are listening to you and fighting hard for the issues that matter to people.

"From the NHS to tackling the cost of living, we want a fair deal for our country.”

A Conservative win would mean "five more years of chaos" and Rishi Sunak has shown tonight "just how out of touch he is", Labour's campaign coordinator has said.

Reacting to the leader's debate, Pat McFadden said Sir Keir Starmer "exposed the Tory manifesto as unfunded".

"Keir Starmer and Labour will return politics to public service, putting country before party in stark contrast to partygate and dodgy COVID contracts," he said.

"On 4 July, we have a chance to turn the page and start to rebuild with Labour."

Tonight was an "important moment" for Rishi Sunak as he put his opponent "on the spot", says our deputy political editor Sam Coates .

Coates says he thinks the prime minister would have been "very happy" with his performance - and adds that some of his aides were even "punching the air" after the debate.

It was a performance Mr Sunak "desperately needed earlier in the campaign", he adds.

He says Mr Sunak had a "clear strategy... to demand answers from Keir Starmer on tax and whether it will go up, on welfare and how you get people off benefits, on 'smashing the gangs' and whether the Rwanda policy is needed..."

Coates says Sir Keir provided a "range" of answers as the prime minister sparred with him.

"Sometimes he had specifics, sometimes he did not," he says.

"That strategy, although executed in a way I think that the Conservative Party tonight is very happy with, has nevertheless been judged not decisively in Keir Starmer or Rishi Sunak's favour," says Coates, referring to the YouGov poll showing there was no winner in the final debate of the election (see 21.38 post).

The final TV clash of the election campaign was an ill-tempered shouting match, at least from Rishi Sunak.

Sir Keir was more measured. More prime ministerial, perhaps?

As he had to as the underdog, Mr Sunak went on the attack from the start until the very end and unveiled a new campaign slogan: "Don't surrender…"

He said it no fewer than 15 times during the 75-minute debate. That’s once every five minutes.

But just like the England-Slovenia Euros match 24 hours earlier, the result was a draw: 50%-50% exactly, according to pollsters YouGov.

At the outset, the PM served notice that he wanted to talk about tax, while Sir Keir wanted to talk about politicians gambling.

As Mr Sunak read out prepared lines, it was a smart ad lib from Sir Keir that won the first round of applause.

"If you listened to people in the audience a bit more you might not be so out of touch," he said, in a familiar Labour attack line.

But the PM was strong and came out on top in exchanges on illegal migrants crossing the Channel.

One of the best moments came when a member of the audience, Robert, asked a devastating question: "Are you two really the best we’ve got to the next prime minister of our great country?"

By the end, the debate closed out as it began - with Mr Sunak shouting over the Labour leader. It wasn't a good look.

And as the debate ended, there was no handshake between the pair, which is unusual for these TV clashes.

At least party leaders pretend to be civilised towards each other usually.

There's clearly no love lost between these two - and it showed.

Darren Jones, shadow chief secretary to the Treasury, is among the Labour representatives in the spin room this evening.

He's asked first about his leaked comments that Labour's target for decarbonising the economy will cost "hundreds of billions" of pounds.

Sir David Davis, who sticks around for this encounter, asks why Mr Jones's party "downgraded" their net zero plans.

"Because you guys crashed the economy," the shadow chief secretary responds.

Sunak 'behaved badly' in debate

On the leader's debate, Mr Jones says Sir Keir Starmer came across as "clearly more prime ministerial" - and adds that he thinks Rishi Sunak behaved "quite badly".

"He didn't answer questions that were put to him and was constantly speaking over Keir and Mishal [Husain, the BBC host]."

He denies Sir Keir's remarks that Mr Sunak is out of touch were "below the belt".

"Rishi Sunak is going around the country telling everyone that they've never had it so good... they crashed the economy, people at home know that because they paid the price for it."

Up to spin for the Conservatives is ex-minister David Davis.

"This debate was very important," he says, noting it's the final one before the public decides who to back.

He was a fan of Rishi Sunak's new attack line - the repeated pleas to voters not to "surrender" their borders or finances to Labour.

"[Sunak has] faced a once-in-a-generation issue in terms of a war in Europe, he's faced a once-in-a-century issue in terms of a pandemic, and he did it with an economy from which we'd inherited massive debts in the past," he adds.

After all that, "he managed to get inflation down from 11% to 2% in six months".

"The public will look at this and say: 'We've got a difficult world, all sorts of disruptions at home and abroad, who will deal with it the best of these two'?" he says.

"I know who I'll be voting for."

With minutes to go, a group of smiling Labour spinners arrived to watch the final summations.

Darren Jones - under fire for his comments about the cost of going for net zero, revealed in The Telegraph - tells Sky News it's clear who was more prime ministerial during the debate.

He and the other Starmer backers then burst away to the various cameras and microphones to talk up their leader.

Meanwhile, serious faced Conservatives enter from the other end of the room to give their verdicts.

Tory candidate - and former minister - David Davis says he thinks Rishi Sunak's repetition of the "surrender" phrase will have gone down well.

This just in from YouGov - which has found there was no winner in tonight's BBC leaders' debate, the last of the general election campaign.

Asked who performed best - the results came in exactly 50/50.

Our deputy political editor Sam Coates says there will likely be disappointment in the Conservative ranks over this result.

"Neck-and-neck polling doesn't seem to me like it's going to change the race," he says.

"I think there's a really interesting question about Rishi Sunak's tactics, in my view, watching that, he was effective in highlighting the choice - the policy difference between the two men.

"I wonder looking at that poll whether that's what the public are really looking for."

However, there were distinctions when viewers were asked who performed better on certain topics.

Rishi Sunak came out on top on immigration and tax, while Sir Keir Starmer performed better on welfare and the UK's relationship with the EU.

Labour also just edged ahead on the economy - with 47% saying they performed better, and 43% backing the Tories.

The Met Police has announced it will take the lead on investigating "a small number of cases" related to the Westminster betting scandal.

A spokesman said the force would "assess whether the alleged offending goes beyond Gambling Act offences to include others, such as misconduct in public office".

The Met is not taking over the entire investigation into bets on the timing of the election, they said.

"The Gambling Commission will continue to lead the investigation into cases where the alleged offending is limited to breaches of the Gambling Act only," said the spokesperson.

They added that more details would be provided tomorrow.

The final debate of this election is over.

Sir Keir Starmer and Rishi Sunak went head-to-head for an hour and 15 minutes.

At times, the exchange become heated, with the prime minister in particular targeting Sir Keir's stance on issues while the Labour leader was speaking.

The two men clashed particularly on borders, taxes, and gender.

Our chief political correspondent Jon Craig says: "The debate ends as it began, with Rishi Sunak shouting over Sir Keir Starmer.

"It's not a good look."

Jon adds: "And as the debate ended, there was no handshake between the pair, which is unusual for these TV clashes.

There’s clearly no love lost between these two. It showed. A pretty ill-tempered clash at times.

"Sunak on the attack, Starmer more on the defensive."

Netanyahu says the war’s intensive phase is nearing an end, but fighting will continue.

The intensive phase of Israel’s war against Hamas is “about to end,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a Sunday night interview on Israeli television, although he emphasized that did not mean the conflict was coming to a close.

After the operation in Rafah, Gaza’s southernmost city and the latest focus of Israel’s ground offensive, the prime minister said, Israel would keep “mowing the lawn” — a term long used in Israeli security circles to denote the use of force aimed at curtailing the regrowth of militant organizations.

Mr. Netanyahu’s remarks were the latest suggestion by senior Israeli officials that the war could soon enter a period of change.

Israel’s defense minister, Yoav Gallant, was in Washington for meetings with Biden administration officials, which he said would include discussion of “the transition to ‘Phase C’ in Gaza.”

While Israel’s military says it is close to dismantling or seriously degrading Hamas’s military infrastructure, the government has not proposed any clear plan for the administration of Gaza after the war.

Mr. Netanyahu suggested in the interview that a postwar civilian administration would involve local Palestinians, hopefully with the help of moderate Arab nations. The Israeli military would have to maintain overall security control of the enclave, he said.

The prime minister continued to rule out a proposal that has been pushed by the Biden administration: handing over Gaza to the Western-backed Palestinian Authority, which exercises limited self-rule in parts of the occupied West Bank.

To get to the “day after Hamas,” Mr. Netanyahu said, “first you have to eliminate Hamas” — reiterating his longstanding position that the armed group be fully eradicated, a goal that many experts say is unattainable .

The prime minister’s remarks came in a 44-minute interview he granted to “The Patriots,” a populist and often divisive nightly talk show on Channel 14 , a right-wing Israeli television station that caters to Mr. Netanyahu’s voter base.

Mr. Netanyahu has rarely been interviewed in Hebrew for an Israeli audience since the start of the war. He has faced criticism domestically for granting frequent interviews to American networks while engaging with Israelis mainly through sporadic televised statements and news conferences or via video clips.

Mr. Netanyahu also addressed the stalled cease-fire negotiations during the interview, suggesting at one point that he was willing to strike a “partial” deal for the return of only some of the 120 hostages being held in Gaza — a statement that his office quickly walked back.

The prime minister said he was ready to agree to a temporary truce and the release of some of the hostages, then subsequently resuming the war. That proposition appeared to contradict an Israeli proposal that was approved last month by Mr. Netanyahu and his war cabinet for a phased deal that would release all the hostages and usher in a permanent cease-fire — a proposal that was endorsed by President Biden and the United Nations Security Council.

But at another point in Sunday’s interview, Mr. Netanyahu said he was committed to bringing back all the remaining hostages, at least a third of whom Israel has said have died in captivity.

In a brief statement issued after the interview, Mr. Netanyahu’s office said it was Hamas that opposed a deal, not Israel, adding: “Prime Minister Netanyahu has made it clear that we will not leave Gaza until we return all 120 of our hostages, living and deceased.”

The Hostages and Missing Persons Families Forum, which advocates for the hostages, condemned Mr. Netanyahu’s comments in the interview, saying that failing to advance the cease-fire proposal “abandons 120 hostages and violates the state’s moral obligation to its citizens.”

“The families of the hostages will not allow the government and its leader to back away from their fundamental commitments to our loved ones’ fate,” the group said in a statement. “The responsibility and duty to return all hostages lies with the prime minister.”

Israeli fighter jets bombed an UNRWA compound near Gaza City on Sunday, killing at least eight people, according to Wafa, the Palestinian Authority’s official news agency. The compound included a training college that had become an aid distribution site for displaced families, according to Reuters . The Israeli military said the compound was being used by Hamas and Islamic Jihad militants, which Hamas denied. A spokeswoman for UNRWA, the main U.N. agency aiding Palestinians in Gaza, said that more than 500 displaced people sheltering at its school buildings had been killed since the start of the war.

A drone attack damaged a merchant vessel 65 nautical miles west of the Yemeni port city of Hudaydah, a British government maritime agency said on Sunday. The agency, United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations, said that the crew was safe and that the vessel was proceeding to port. There was no immediate claim of responsibility. The Iran-backed Houthi militia in Yemen has staged dozens of missile and drone attacks against ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden since November, disrupting global maritime trade.

Israel’s military said it killed a militant in an airstrike on Saturday deep inside Lebanese territory as cross-border fire continues to stoke fears of a broader escalation. The Israeli military said in a statement that the target was responsible for funneling weapons to Hamas and to another group, as well as “promotion and execution of terrorist activities against Israel.” Hamas did not immediately comment on the strike. Lebanese state media reported that the strike had hit a village about 25 miles from the Israeli border.

The U.N. agency that aids Palestinians said that 69 percent of school buildings where displaced families were seeking shelter in Gaza have sustained direct hits or damage . Israel has repeatedly targeted what it says are Hamas fighters located in school buildings in airstrikes that have also killed civilians.

Netanyahu doubles down on complaints about the supply of U.S. munitions.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel aired new grievances on Sunday over the Biden administration’s supply of munitions for the war in Gaza as his minister of defense arrived in Washington for meetings with senior U.S. officials.

Some Israeli news outlets had portrayed the visit by Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, although preplanned, as a “reconciliation” trip aimed at smoothing recent tensions with the country’s most crucial ally. Mr. Netanyahu’s government and the Biden administration have been increasingly at odds over Israel’s conduct in Gaza, and Mr. Netanyahu lashed out at the United States last week for withholding munitions.

But on Sunday morning, Mr. Netanyahu doubled down. In remarks broadcast in Hebrew before his weekly cabinet meeting in Jerusalem, Mr. Netanyahu said he appreciated the Biden administration’s support for Israel through eight months of war, “but starting four months ago, there was a dramatic decrease in the supply of armaments.”

“For long weeks, we turned to our American friends and requested that the shipments be expedited. We did that time after time,” Mr. Netanyahu said, adding that he had also tried working behind closed doors.

“We received all sorts of explanations, but one thing we didn’t receive: The basic situation didn’t change,” he continued, adding, “Certain items arrived sporadically, but the munitions at large remained behind.”

There was no immediate comment from the Biden administration about the remarks, which could upstage Mr. Gallant in Washington. They come just days after Mr. Netanyahu released a combative video , in English, excoriating the Biden administration for, as the Israeli leader put it, withholding weapons and ammunition when Israel was “fighting for its life” against Iran and other common enemies.

U.S. officials said at the time that they found the video “perplexing” and did not know what Mr. Netanyahu was talking about. While the Israeli prime minister complained of “bottlenecks,” the Biden administration maintained that it had held up only one shipment of 2,000-pound bombs over concerns about their use in densely populated parts of Gaza.

Many Israelis were similarly nonplussed by the prime minister’s decision to pick such a public fight with the White House, with sharp criticism coming even from within his own conservative Likud Party.

Yuli Edelstein, a Likud lawmaker and chairman of the Israeli Parliament’s Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, said he was “surprised” by the video. He told Israel’s “Meet the Press” program on Saturday that differences of opinion with the United States should not be handled “via video clips.”

Some Israeli political analysts have suggested that Mr. Netanyahu’s moves might be an effort to intervene in American politics ahead of the November presidential elections and give Donald Trump and the Republicans a stick with which to beat the Democrats. Mr. Netanyahu is scheduled to address a joint session of Congress next month.

Other experts, however, have said Mr. Netanyahu’s public affront likely has more to do with Israel’s domestic politics amid increasing signs of strain in his hawkish coalition — the most right-wing and religiously conservative in Israel’s history.

“If there’s any logic to be found in a completely illogical move, one has to see all this through the prism of Netanyahu, with his political survival as his ultimate goal,” said Reuven Hazan, a professor of political science at Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Mr. Netanyahu was “pandering to the extremists in Israel in the short term,” he added, “and probably creating damage for the military, for relations with the United States and for the country in the long term.”

Mr. Netanyahu on Sunday defended his actions, saying he went public based on “years of experience and the knowledge that this step was vital to opening the bottleneck,” adding, “I am willing to absorb personal attacks on behalf of the state of Israel.”

He also suggested that his public criticism might be bearing fruit.

“In light of what I have heard over the past 24 hours,” he said, “I hope and believe that this issue will be resolved in the near future.”

His continuation of the spat on Sunday and Mr. Gallant’s travel to the United States come at a critical juncture. Israel’s military has indicated that it wants to wind down the fighting in Gaza and potentially turn its attention to its northern border with Lebanon, after weeks of escalating tit-for-tat strikes between the Israeli military and Hezbollah, the Lebanese militia backed by Iran.

The Biden administration has been working to try to find a diplomatic solution to avert a full-blown conflagration between Israel and Hezbollah. President Biden has also invested time and political capital endorsing an Israeli proposal for a truce in Gaza involving an exchange of hostages — including some with U.S. citizenship — for Palestinian prisoners. Hamas raised significant reservations about the proposal, and talks have been at an impasse.

Mr. Gallant was invited to Washington by his counterpart, Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III, according to Mr. Gallant’s office. It also said he was scheduled to meet with Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken and other senior American officials.

“The United States is our most important and central ally,” Mr. Gallant said shortly before his departure. “Our ties are crucial, and perhaps more important than ever, at this time,” he added.

Mr. Gallant and Mr. Netanyahu are themselves rivals who have openly clashed in recent months, even as they jointly oversee Israel’s military operations. As the Israeli prime minister has lashed out at the White House, he also has engaged in increasingly public spats with his military brass and his right-wing coalition partners.

The Israeli military says troops tied a wounded Palestinian to a vehicle.

Israeli troops tied a wounded Palestinian to the top of a military vehicle on Saturday morning during an operation in the occupied West Bank, a scene that was captured on video and quickly went viral, prompting outrage and the promise of an investigation by Israel’s military.

Israeli soldiers raided Wadi Burqin, a Palestinian town on the outskirts of the West Bank city of Jenin, on Saturday morning to arrest Palestinians suspected of involvement in militant groups. Jenin, a longtime stronghold for loosely organized armed groups, has experienced repeated crackdowns by the Israeli military over the past few months.

A firefight broke out between Palestinian militants and Israeli soldiers, the military said. Israeli troops arrested a Palestinian injured in the shooting. The man’s family later identified him as Mujahid Ballas, 22, a resident of Jenin.

“In violation of orders and standard operating procedures, the suspect was taken by the forces while tied on top of a vehicle,” the Israeli military said, adding that such conduct “does not conform to the values” of its army.

Although the Israeli military said it would investigate, human rights groups have regularly criticized the country’s military-justice system, which they say rarely indicts or convicts those accused of inappropriate violence against Palestinians.

The troops handed over the wounded man to the Palestinian Red Crescent for medical care, the Israeli military said. Mr. Ballas had been shot in the leg and arm, and his skin had burns from lying on the vehicle’s hood in the scorching sun, said his father, Raed Ballas.

“These people have no limits,” he said, referring to the soldiers who tied up his son.

Mujahid Ballas was visiting his uncle’s house to play cards during his weekend holiday, his father said. He denied his son was involved in any militant activity, pointing to the fact that the Israeli security services had ultimately released him after the raid.

“If they had the slightest cause — they would not have let him go,” Raed Ballas said.

Violence in the occupied West Bank has increased in the eight months since the Hamas-led attack on Oct. 7 that set off the war in Gaza. More than 500 Palestinians and 12 Israelis have been killed in the territory, according to the United Nations, and thousands of Palestinians have been arrested in near-nightly Israeli raids.

Israel says it is investigating a strike that killed dozens near a Red Cross office in Gaza.

Israel said Saturday it was investigating an airstrike in Al-Mawasi in southern Gaza after the International Committee of the Red Cross said that “heavy-caliber” projectiles fell meters away from an office and residences for the aid group.

The strike killed at least 22 people and wounded dozens of others who were then taken to a nearby field hospital, the Red Cross said.

William Schomburg, the leader of the Red Cross operation in Gaza, did not blame the Israeli military or Hamas but said all parties to the conflict were aware of the Red Cross’s buildings south of a zone designated as “safer” for displaced Palestinians fleeing fighting in Gaza.

“We’re not here to lay blame,” Mr. Schomburg said, adding that his focus was on how to best respond to the episode and how to avoid it from happening again. The Red Cross strives to remain neutral in conflicts in an effort to be able to provide aid to whomever needs it.

The Israeli military said in a statement that it did not carry out a direct attack against a Red Cross facility. It did not say whether it had struck elsewhere in the area.

“The incident will be quickly examined, and its findings will be presented to our international partners,” the military said in a statement on Saturday.

Since the beginning of the war, Israeli military officials have repeatedly accused Hamas fighters of hiding within the civilian population.

Describing the macabre scene in the aftermath of Friday’s strike, Mr. Schomburg said there were three large explosions that left “piles of dead bodies” and “blood everywhere.” He added that the I.C.R.C. team in Rafah had collected body parts scattered in the area.

“Frankly, it’s nothing like I have ever seen before,” Mr. Schomburg told reporters in an online news briefing Saturday.

Josep Borrell, a top diplomat from the European Union, condemned the attack and called for an independent investigation. He said those responsible should be held accountable.
