What is accreditation.

Accreditation is both a status and a process. As a status, accreditation provides public notification that an institution or program meets standards of quality set forth by an accrediting agency. As a process, accreditation reflects the fact that in achieving recognition by the accrediting agency, the institution or program is committed to self-study and external review by one's peers in seeking not only to meet standards but to continuously seek ways in which to enhance the quality of education and training provided. Psychology's accrediting body, the Commission on Accreditation (CoA), publishes guidelines and procedures by which its accreditation process is carried out.

What is the purpose of accreditation?

Accreditation is a process that assures the educational community and the general public that an institution or a program has clearly defined and appropriate objectives and maintains conditions under which their achievement can reasonably be expected. It encourages improvement through continuous self-study and review. It fosters excellence in postsecondary education through the development of principles and guidelines for assessing educational effectiveness.

What is the difference between APA accreditation and institutional accreditation?

The APA Commission on Accreditation is a specialized/professional accreditor. This means that APA accreditation only extends to specific doctoral graduate programs, doctoral internships and postdoctoral residencies in health service psychology. The accredited status of one specific program does not extend to other programs in the same department or institution.

Other agencies accredit entire institutions. There are six such accrediting bodies in the United States. APA-accredited doctoral graduate programs must be housed in an institution that has accreditation. However, an institution may hold accreditation and not have any APA-accredited programs.

National accreditation also covers entire institutions, and national accrediting agencies operate across the entire United States. Many of their accredited institutions are single-purpose (such as for education in technology) or faith-based.

Why are "degree mills" and "accreditation mills" harmful?

Degree mills (also known as diploma mills) are institutions that award academic degrees and diplomas with substandard or no academic study. Sometimes such institutions claim to be accredited by an accreditation mill — agencies that claim to be providers of accreditation and quality assurance without a proper basis (recognition by an external agency such as the U.S. Department of Education or the Council of Higher Education Accreditation). Both degree and accreditation mills mislead students and have harmful consequences. In the United States, such degrees may not be acknowledged by other institutions, employers, licensing boards, credentialing agencies and other groups. A program or institution’s “accreditation” from an accreditation mill can mislead students and the public about the quality of that program/institution. Thus, students may spend money and not receive a proper credential or a useable credential. Why is accreditation important?

Although graduating from an accredited program does not guarantee jobs or licensure for individuals, it may facilitate such achievement. It reflects the quality by which an educational institution or a program conducts its business. It speaks to a sense of public trust, as well as to professional quality.

As a student:  Accreditation provides assurance that the program in which you are enrolled or are considering enrolling is engaged in continuous review and improvement of its quality, that it meets nationally endorsed standards in the profession, and that it is accountable for achieving what it sets out to do.

As a faculty member:  Accreditation provides a formal process for ongoing evaluation and improvement of your program and faculty development outcomes, a process by which faculty, students, and administration can work together in advancing the educational institution's mission.

As a psychologist: Accreditation provides a forum in which educators and practitioners of psychology can exchange ideas on future needs of the profession and ways in which to best address these needs in professional education and training.

As a member of the public: Accreditation ensures public accountability of a program or an institution -- that it has the means and demonstrates the outcomes for its educational process that are consistent with its goals and objectives; in other words, that there is 'truth in advertising.'

In most English-speaking countries, those that complete a PhD use the title “Doctor” (typically abbreviated to Dr) in front of their names and are referred to as such within academic and/or research settings. Those that work in fields outside of academia may decide not to use the formal doctor title but use post-nominal letters (e.g. John Smith PhD); it’s unusual though for someone to use both the Doctor title and post-nominal letters in their name.

A PhD and a professional doctorate are both research-based terminal degrees.

However, where a PhD focuses on original research mostly around theoretical concepts, a professional doctorate focuses on examining existing knowledge to solve real-life, practical problems.

While there is much crossover between the two, a PhD is generally better suited for an individual to wants to advance the knowledge and understanding in their field, and a professional doctorate degree is better suited to a working professional who wants to better be able to apply knowledge and understanding to their field.

What Are the Entry Requirements for a PhD?

To be accepted on to a PhD programme, students usually need to hold at least a high ( 2:1 and above ) undergraduate degree that is related to the field of research that they want to pursue. A PhD candidate may also be expected to hold a Master’s degree , however, this does not mean you must have one, as it is still possible to enrol into a PhD without a Master’s .

Self-funded courses may sometimes be more relaxed in relation to entry requirements. It may be possible to be accepted onto a self-funded PhD programme with lower grades, though these students typically demonstrate their suitability for the role through professional work experience.

Whilst a distance learning project is possible , most PhD candidates will carry out their research over at least three years based at their university, with regular contact with two academic supervisors (primary and secondary). This is particularly the case for lab-based projects, however, some PhD projects require spending time on-site away from university (e.g. at a specialist research lab or at a collaborating institution abroad).

How Long Does a PhD Take?

Typically, full-time PhDs last 3-4 years and part-time PhDs last 6-7 years. However, at the discretion of the university, the thesis writing-up period can be extended by up to four years.

Although most doctoral programmes start in September or October, they are generally much more flexible than taught-courses and can start at any time of the year.

How Much Does a PhD Cost?

Tuition fees for UK and EU students vary between £3,000 and £6,000 per year, with the average tuition fee of £4,712 per year for 2023/24 programmes.

Tuition fees increase considerably for international students, varying between £16,000 to £25,000 per year, with an average tuition fee of £19,600 per year .

Nonetheless, most students will secure PhD funding in the form of studentships, scholarships and bursaries to help pay for these fees. These funding opportunities can either be partial, which cover tuition fees only, or full, which cover both tuition fees and living expenses.

UK national students can also apply for Doctoral Loans from Student Finance England if they are unable to secure funding.

What Does a PhD Involve?

To be awarded a PhD, a doctoral student is required to produce a substantial body of work that adds new knowledge to their chosen field.

A PhD programme will typically involve four key stages:

Stage 1: Literature Review

The first year of a PhD involves attending regular meetings with your supervisors and carrying out a search on previously published work in your subject area. This search will be used to produce a literature review which should set the context of the project by explaining the foundation of what is currently known within the field of research, what recent developments have occurred, and where the gaps in knowledge are. In most cases, this will be an extension of your research proposal should you have produced one as part of your application. The literature review should conclude by outlining the overarching aims and objectives of the research project. This stage of setting achievable goals which are original and contribute to the field of research is an essential first step in a successful PhD.

The supervisor is the main point of contact through the duration of a PhD – but remember: they are there to mentor, not to teach, or do it for you . It will be your responsibility to plan, execute and monitor your own work as well as to identify gaps in your own knowledge and address them.

Stage 2: Research

The second year (and prehapse some of your third year) is when you work on your research. Having identified novel research questions from your review of the literature, this is where you collect your data to help answer these questions. How you do this will depend on the nature of your doctoral research: for example, you may design and run experiments in a lab alongside other PhD students or visit excavation sites in remote regions of the world. You should check in regularly with your supervisors to update them and run any ideas or issues past them.

Have the structure and chapters of your thesis in mind as you develop and tackle your research questions. Working with a view of publishing your work will be very valuable later on.

Stage 3: Write up of Thesis

The next key stage of a PhD is writing a doctoral thesis , which typically takes from anywhere between three months to one year. A thesis is a substantial body of work that describes the work and outcomes of the research over the previous two to three years. It should tell a detailed story of the PhD project – focusing on:

  • The motivations for the research questions identified from the literature review.
  • The methodologies used, results obtained, and a comprehensive analysis and discussion of the findings.
  • A detailed discussion of the key findings with an emphasis on the original contributions made to your field of research and how this has been impactful.

There is no universal rule for the length of a PhD thesis, but general guidelines set the word count between 80,000 to 100,000 words.

For your thesis to be successful, it needs to adequately defend your argument and provide a unique or increased insight into your field that was not previously available.

Stage 4: Attending the Viva

A viva voce , most commonly referred to as just a ‘ viva ‘, is an interview-style examination where the PhD student is required to engage in a critical appraisal of their work and defend their thesis against at least two examiners. The examiners will ask questions to check the PhD student has an in-depth understanding of the ideas and theories proposed in their thesis, and whether they have developed the research skills that would be expected of them.

The viva is one of the final steps in achieving a PhD, and typically lasts at least two hours, but this duration can vary depending on the examiners, the university and the PhD project itself.

Once you have done the viva – you’re on the home stretch. You will typically be asked to make some amendments to your thesis based on the examiner’s feedback. You are then ready to submit your final thesis for either:

  • PhD – If you pass the requirements you will be awarded a PhD degree (most common outcome),
  • MPhil – If you failed to meet requirements for a PhD, you may be downgraded to an MPhil degree (uncommon outcome),
  • Fail – No award is given, typically for cases of plagiarism (extremely uncommon outcome).

Why College Accreditation Matters

Before applying to an institution check its accreditation, which is crucial for federal aid and educational quality.

Accrediting agencies work with state and federal governments to form a regulatory system for higher education programs and institutions.

For prospective college students, an institution's or program’s accreditation status can be a strong indicator when it comes to educational quality, graduates' professional success and access to financial aid.

What Is College Accreditation?

Higher education accreditation agencies are private organizations that peer review the quality of institutions and programs across the country. These agencies work alongside state and federal governments to form a three-part regulatory system:

  • The U.S. Department of Education regulates how schools receive and use federal aid funds and ensures equal access to education.
  • Individual states authorize a school’s operations within the state and ensure compliance with consumer protection laws.
  • Accrediting agencies ensure that higher education programs and institutions meet certain quality standards.

Experts note that an accreditation’s value often varies by agency.

The Education Department releases an annual list of recognized accreditors – both institutional and programmatic – it considers to be reliable. Accreditation from such agencies gives those programs and institutions access to federal financial aid and helps coordinate the transfer of credits between institutions.

The Council for Higher Education Accreditation, a group of degree-granting universities and colleges, is the only national nongovernmental organization that recognizes both institutional and programmatic accrediting organizations for higher education, focusing on academic integrity and student outcomes.

“If an institution is receiving federal funds, absolutely the accrediting organization needs to be recognized by the federal government. But also by CHEA, because our foci are different,” CHEA president Cynthia Jackson Hammond says. “We want to make sure that when a student graduates from an institution in a particular field, he or she is able to succeed.”

How Does the Accreditation Process Work?

While standards and methods vary by accreditation agency, many share the same general process. That process begins with an institution or program applying for accreditation, which can take from one to three years.

Once an organization becomes a candidate for accreditation, it submits a self-study that analyzes the state of the organization from administrative, faculty and student perspectives.

Heather Perfetti, president of the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, an accreditor based in Pennsylvania, worked with such agencies from an institutional perspective before joining the commission. She says the self-study process is a great opportunity for growth and internal reflection.

“I always found it exciting, and an opportunity to take a real pause for a reflection that made the entire college, and experience for students, improve as a result of those activities,” Perfetti says.

Much of the accreditation process is conducted by committees of peer reviewers acting on behalf of an agency. These teams review self-study documents, visit the campus and interact with students and faculty during the institution's or program’s candidacy.

“The beauty of the American system is that it’s a peer evaluation system. My staff and I – all we do is facilitate these efforts,” says Sonny Ramaswamy, president of the Northwestern Commission on Colleges and Universities, an accreditation agency based in Washington state.

The evaluation process usually occurs over several years. Agencies look at things like degree program design and delivery, student support systems, job placement post-graduation, how the administrative bodies are structured and overall planning and growth. They also often require a clear statement of and adherence to a core mission or set of goals.

After the committee members have finished their evaluation, they recommend an action to the agency’s board, which decides whether or not to accredit.

Once accreditation is granted, most agencies begin a cycle of reviewing the institution or program, usually over a period of seven to 10 years. Experts say this generally consists of annual reports, with more involved analyses at the start and halfway point of the cycle.

An institution or program found noncompliant with accreditation standards may face a warning, probation or a "show cause," which requires it to demonstrate why it should maintain accreditation. This often comes with additional surveillance from the agency, and failure to resolve an issue may result in a loss of accreditation.

Institutional vs. Programmatic Accreditation

Institutional accreditation agencies focus on entire schools, typically judging the holistic quality of education across a college's or university’s schools and programs against a set of standards designated by the agency.

Lawrence Schall, president of the New England Commission on Higher Education, says NECHE fulfills two main roles as an accreditor.

“We have a sort of dual purpose," he says. "We can think of areas for quality improvement, working alongside institutions to help them through an in-depth study using peers to look at what they do well and where they can improve. We also have a consumer protection piece: to make sure that when we accredit institutions, the public and families can be assured of the quality of that institution.”

Exact standards vary among agencies but often include financial health, academic performance, job attainment rate of graduates and the institution’s adherence to its own stated mission and objectives. A common reason colleges lose accreditation and fail to regain it is that they do not show enough evidence of future long-term financial viability.

Programmatic Accreditation

Programmatic agencies often focus on entities within an institution, such as a particular college within a university, a certain degree program or a specific course curriculum. Many online programs also require proper accreditation.

Donald Balasa, president of the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs, says programmatic accreditation has value even at an institutionally accredited school.

“The role of institutional accreditors is not to look at specific programs in the school to the depth, breadth and rigor of a programmatic or specialized accreditor,” Balasa says.

In certain states, some professions – like nursing or cosmetology – require completion of a properly accredited program to practice.

What Does Accreditation Mean to a College's Applicants?

For students seeking to use federal financial aid , which includes Pell Grants , federal student loans and work-study benefits, it's crucial to verify that an institution or program is accredited by an agency recognized by the Education Department. And experts warn it can be difficult to transfer academic credits from an institution lacking accreditation.

Even if an institution is accredited by the Education Department or a CHEA-recognized agency, it's important for prospective students to be aware of any specific program accreditation that might be necessary, Balasa says.

“Sometimes the student will find out too late that the program did not meet the requirements for state licensing in the profession and therefore either will have to attend another program, or work in another state,” he says.

Experts caution students to also check if an institution or program has been placed on probation or has received warnings from its accreditor. Colleges that lose their accreditation and can't gain it from another agency often have to close .

“There are opportunities for an institution to return to compliance and not necessarily face that issue again as part of their accreditation activities,” Perfetti says. “But certainly students should be paying attention to the accreditation status of the institution they are interested in attending.”

Experts also recommend reviewing the standards and methods an accrediting agency uses when conducting accreditation in order to best understand what a school's or program’s accreditation stands for.

Accrediting Agencies

Accrediting agencies, also called the accreditors, are independent organizations that set the standards of operation in educational institutions. These accreditors cover regional or national levels to develop evaluation criteria that encompass all degree programs, especially in distance learning institutions. The U.S. Department of Education has set the primary activities conducted by accrediting agencies in the process of accreditation.

Primary Accrediting Activities:

Role of the U.S. Department of Education

Accreditation is conducted by independent bodies. As such, the U.S. Department of Education does not function as an accrediting agency but is delegated a significant function. The Department is granted the power of oversight over the system of post-secondary accreditation. It reviews accrediting agencies and imposes sanctions upon these agencies when they fail to enforce the accreditation standards.

The Secretary of Education publishes a list of nationally  recognized accrediting agencies in the country. Types of Accreditation

Under the  Higher Education Opportunity Act of 2008   the term `diploma mill’ means an entity that —

(A) (i) offers, for a fee, degrees, diplomas, or certificates, that may be used to represent to the general public that the individual possessing such a degree, diploma, or certificate has completed a program of postsecondary education or training; and (ii) requires such individual to complete little or no education or coursework to obtain such degree, diploma, or certificate; and

(B) lacks accreditation by an accrediting agency or association that is recognized as an accrediting agency or association of institutions of higher education, or (ii) a Federal agency, State government, or other organization or association that recognizes accrediting agencies or associations.

Diploma mills , as the term suggests, hand out diplomas to any person who is able to pay. They operate without the recognition of the state or other reputable recognizing agencies. TYPES OF ACCREDITATION

It is important to distinguish between the accreditation of programs and the certification of individuals, two separate processes that are frequently referred to as if they are one and the same. On the one hand, accreditation implies the setting of minimal standards which training programs must meet. In order to become accredited, a counselor education program must fulfill certain requirements or standards with regard to institutional settings, program mission and objectives, program content, practicum experiences, student selection and advising, faculty qualifications and workload, program governance, instructional support, and self-evaluation. On the other hand, certification implies recognition that individuals have met minimal professional standards to practice independently as a counselor. In order to be certified, counselors must meet certain levels of education and training in counseling, they must follow the code of ethics, and they are held accountable to show competent and ethical performance in practice.

In the United States, there are two types of accreditation – institutional and specialized. Institutional looks at the entire institution. Specialized accreditors, such as CACREP, look at professional preparation programs within institutions.

When programs are reviewed by CACREP, there are a few standards that address issues at the institutional level (such as financial aid), but most of the application and review focus on the program that offers the graduate degree in counseling. It is the degree-specific program that holds accreditation, not the department or college in which it is housed. Eligibility for CACREP includes having institutional accreditation, so the institutional issues such as financial viability and resources are addressed.

The label can apply to entities ranging from massive banking institutions and wealthy Fortune 500 companies, all the way down to high-earning households and even individuals. Whether you're seeking more information on how to become an accredited investor, or simply interested in what that would mean, read on for everything you need to know about accredited investors. 

A more sophisticated investor 

An accredited investor is an institution or an individual considered sophisticated enough to invest in opportunities that are not available to more regular investors. 

Under current finance law, any company that wishes to offer up its securities has two options. It can register with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), operating as a publicly traded entity with a required quarterly earnings report to be made available to both shareholders and the public. Alternatively, it can bypass those regulations, remaining privately owned but continuing to trade through an exemption . 

Selling to accredited investors is just one of those exemptions, covered by SEC Rule 501 under Regulation D of the Securities Act of 1933. The rule was drafted as a government response to the Great Depression , granting market access to smaller companies that might otherwise be crushed under the costs accompanying SEC registration. 

The accredited investor exemption was extended in 1982 in order to include individuals as well as institutions, provided the former could prove a net worth high enough to cushion against losses that the average investor is shielded from by SEC regulations. 

Broader access 

Investors without accreditation can manage the full breadth of registered securities like stocks, bonds, and mutual funds . They can also accumulate wealth, purchase real estate, build retirement portfolios, take risks, and reap rewards — the biggest difference is in the scale of these endeavors. 

One of the benefits of being an accredited investor is that once you attain this status, it "unlocks" access to products not available to the general public, such as hedge funds , venture capital funds, private equity funds , and angel investing. 

This gap in access can be explained by the way that the SEC views each unique product. For example, the SEC considers hedge funds a more "flexible" investment strategy than something like mutual funds, because hedge funds use speculative practices like leverage and short selling . 

Since these complex products require extra research and understanding, investors need to demonstrate that they comprehend the risks involved in these types of investments before the SEC is comfortable with them diving in. 

How to qualify as an accredited investor

Financial criteria .

The US federal government has provided specific accredited investor requirements. According to the SEC , an accredited investor can be anyone who meets one of the following criteria: 

Income 

An individual with income above $200,000 for each of the two previous years, or joint income with a spouse or spousal equivalent above $300,000 — with an expectation that you'll continue earning at or above those levels, qualifies. 

Net worth 

An individual or married couple with a net worth in excess of $1 million, excluding their primary residence, also qualifies. 

Other 

For those who don't meet the income or net worth requirements, there are still options, assuming you can prove that you are a partner, director, or officer at a fund that distributes private investments or hold in good standing a Series 7, 65, or 82 license, which are for financial professionals and require passing an exam. 

In 1982, just 1.8% of American households met these qualifications. As of 2020, that number has ballooned to 13.85%, because of income minimums remaining static even as definitions and exceptions have expanded. For example, licensed brokers and investment advisors joined the list in 2016, and accredited finance professionals were added as recently as 2020.

Rounding out the list of accredited investors are institutions like banks, brokerage firms, insurance companies, employer-sponsored retirement plans, and even trusts, provided all of the above can claim assets in excess of $5 million.

An organization can also qualify as an accredited investor if all of its equity owners are accredited investors. 

Why it matters 

While many are mostly familiar with the SEC's consumer protection efforts, the regulatory authority's obligations are actually twofold. In addition to safeguarding investors, it's also responsible for capital formation — essentially, helping the market accumulate capital. To ensure that those two efforts aren't in conflict, it's sometimes necessary for the SEC to match up high-risk, high-reward opportunities with suitable investors.

That's where accredited investors come in. 

Investment access

Admissions requirements

Admissions requirements vary from college to college, but you'll generally need to meet the following conditions in order to gain entry to an associate degree program:

Be 18 years of age by the time you begin your first day of class

Have a high school diploma, or have passed a General Education Development test (GED) or an equivalent test

Meet GPA requirements established by some community colleges

While tuition levels vary between colleges and programs, the average tuition for one year in an associate degree program is $3,800 in 2021, according to the College Board [ 1 ]. That’s for public in-district schools—meaning you’re a resident in the district the associate degree program is located.

Compare that with the average tuition for a year in a bachelor’s degree program, which is $10,740 for public in-state schools, $27,560 for public out-of-state schools, and $38,070 for private nonprofit schools.

Financial aid

Students enrolled in an associate degree program might be eligible for federal financial aid, as long as the institution is accredited . You can submit a FAFSA application to see if you qualify to receive federal aid or federal student loans. For the 2021-2022 school year, 56 percent of community college students received aid, while 33 percent received federal grants [ 2 ].

How long it takes

It generally takes full-time students about two years earn an associate degree, though it can take longer for part-time students. If you prefer to work while earning your associate degree, you'll be in good company. More than four million community college students attended part-time in 2021 (compared to 2.2 million full-time attendees) and 72 percent of them worked [ 2 ].

Associate of Arts (AA): Associate programs focused on business, humanities, arts, or social sciences are often called Associate of Arts degrees. An AA may be a stepping stone to transfer to a bachelor’s degree.

Associate of Science (AS): Associate programs in a field related to science or math are often called Associate of Science degrees. Along with an AA, the AS is typically recommended by schools for students who want to transfer to four-year programs.

Associate of Applied Science (AAS): Associate programs that focus on technical and vocational skills are often called Associate of Applied Science programs. These programs are generally designed to prepare students for a specific occupation or work in a specific field after graduation. Fields can include computer science technology, hospitality management, paralegal studies, law enforcement, welding, among many others. Although it’s less common to use an AAS degree to transfer into a bachelor’s program, some four-year degree programs have begun accepting them for transfers.

Once you earn your associate degree, you have two options to consider. You can extend your education and apply to a bachelor's degree program, or you can pursue jobs in the medical, engineering, computer science, or legal fields, among many others.

Transfer to a bachelor's degree program

If you're interested in continuing your education, you can apply to bachelor's degree programs after you earn your associate degree, and begin completing courses in your declared major .

In fact, a number of students earn their associate degree at a lower-cost community college before transferring to a four-year college or university to finish their bachelor's. Remember that for in-state students, the average annual cost of attending a community college was $3,800 in 2021, compared to $10,740 for a public four-year school, which can amount to a significant savings over two years or more [ 1 ]. 

Earning your associate degree before deciding to pursue your bachelor's also gives you time to:

Build up study skills: If you’ve been out of school for a while and want to brush up on your study skills, or your high school GPA didn’t quite meet admission requirements for a four-year degree, an associate program can give you a boost. Not all community colleges have a GPA requirement for admissions.

Get more time to explore: If you’re not sure what you want to study, attending a community college for general studies courses can give you time to explore courses that might interest you before you fully commit to getting a bachelor’s degree in a subject.

Enjoy added flexibility: Many community colleges keep working people in mind and offer courses at night or on weekends. If you’re working or have family to take care of, starting off with an associate degree could bring you the flexibility you need.

Bootcamps—intensive programs that are designed to quickly equip you with a new skill set—can be a fast way to enter a new field or advance in your current one. This depends on the courses you took and the bachelor’s program you’re transferring into. Universities will generally evaluate your courses and decide if they’re transferable or not.
