Department of Sociology College of Social Science

Msu sociology favorably ranked among sociology phd programs in usa and globally.

June 27, 2022

MSU’s Sociology Doctoral Program ranks quite favorably relative to its peers in the USA and around the world, according to an array of reports.  Department of Sociology Chairperson Aaron M. McCright remarks, “these favorable rankings are the result of much hard work by our dedicated faculty and students, and they reflect the successes we have achieved across many years.”

Multiple systems purport to rank the quality and impact of discipline-based doctoral programs in the USA and around the world.  Most use a combination of quantifiable metrics, such as scholarly publications, extramural funding, and graduate job placement.  At least one depends entirely upon the subjective judgements of the leaders of other doctoral programs.  MSU’s Sociology Doctoral Program occupies advantageous positions relative to our US and global peers in both types of metric-based and reputation-based systems.

MSU’s Sociology Doctoral Program maintains the following rankings in comparison with all US Sociology PhD programs :

  • 18th according to Best Value Schools (metric-based);
  • 26th according to Shanghai Rankings (metric-based);
  • 27th according to Times Higher Education World University Rankings (metric-based);
  • 29th according to QS World University Rankings (metric-based); and
  • 54th according to US News & World Report (reputation-based).

MSU’s Sociology Doctoral Program maintains the following rankings in comparison with all Sociology PhD programs in the world :

  • 36th according to Shanghai Rankings (metric-based);
  • 60th according to Times Higher Education World University Rankings (metric-based);

U.S. News ranks Berkeley Engineering No. 3 grad program nationally

Berkeley Engineering holds the title of the No. 3 graduate engineering school in the United States and remains the top public program, according to U.S. News & World Report’s newest graduate program rankings.

Most of the college’s individual programs held onto their rankings from last year, with environmental engineering and computer science remaining in the top spot, and computer engineering moving up to No. 1. Nine of the engineering graduate programs continue to rank in the top 3.

This year’s rankings for graduate engineering programs are coming more than two months after U.S. News and World Report released its 2025 rankings for 15 other academic disciplines , including law, public policy and chemistry. The publication cited the need to review bibliometric data for affiliated institutions for both medical and engineering schools. Rankings for graduate clinical psychology programs were also delayed this year.

U.S. News updated its evaluation of computer science by calculating programs from “qualitative ratings on academic quality submitted by top officials.” For the third year in a row, U.S. News ranked the graduate program in computer engineering separately from computer science.

The full list of Berkeley Engineering rankings are online . U.S. News will release its undergraduate program rankings in September.

Harvard University

This morning, U.S. News and World Report released their much-anticipated 2024-2025 Best Global University Rankings. These annual rankings are a cornerstone in the field, influencing decisions that range from student applications to institutional funding and providing a glimpse into the current state of affairs in the world of higher education. This list can provide helpful insights into the relative merits of the schools students may be considering adding to their college lists. In order to use this list effectively, however, it is important to understand the nuances of the ranking system and the factors considered therein.

Here is a breakdown of the rankings’ methodology, as well as key takeaways from this year’s list:

Methodology

The U.S. News and World Report Best Global University Rankings are based on a comprehensive methodology that evaluates colleges and universities across thirteen key metrics. These include:

  • Global research reputation (12.5%)
  • Regional research reputation (12.5%)
  • Publications (10%)
  • Books (2.5%)
  • Conferences (2.5%)
  • Normalized citation impact (10%)
  • Total citations (7.5%)
  • Number of publications that are among the 10% most cited (12.5%)
  • Percentage of total publications that are among the 10% most cited (10%)
  • International collaboration – relative to country (5%)
  • International collaboration (5%)
  • Number of highly cited papers that are among the top 1% most cited in their respective field 5%
  • Percentage of total publications that are among the top 1% most highly cited papers 5%

In addition to the overall global rankings and country-specific rankings, U.S. News and World Report published a subject-specific ranking list , evaluating schools’ global positions in over 50 individual disciplines.

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024.

These rankings offer quantitative data students can consider when building their college lists, providing a fairly comprehensive picture of universities’ academic prowess and institutional reach. That being said, students using the rankings to build their college lists should note that many of these factors do not capture the qualitative aspects of students’ experiences.

Key Takeaways from the 2024–25 Rankings

1. The number of universities considered rose by more than 10%.

This year, 2,250 universities across over 100 countries were considered—up more than ten percent from the 2,000 schools considered in the previous ranking.

2. Harvard University lands on top.

As in the last cycle, Harvard University claimed the #1 spot in the global rankings list. This prestigious accolade reflects Harvard's unparalleled academic excellence, groundbreaking research, and global influence. Known for its distinguished faculty, cutting-edge facilities, and a tradition of innovation, Harvard continues to set the standard in higher education, making it the leading choice for students and scholars worldwide.

3. The U.S. dominates the rankings for another year.

Nearly half of the top 50 schools in the ranking are located in the U.S., totaling 24 of the top 50 on the rankings list. Additionally, four out of the top five are U.S. schools: Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University, and University of California, Berkeley. This remarkable achievement underscores the global prestige of U.S. universities, known for their world-class research, innovative academic programs, and extensive resources.

4. UT Austin and Brown University dropped in the rankings.

Both Brown University and The University of Texas at Austin surprisingly dropped in the rankings, falling out of the top 50. Given both schools’ excellence, this shift demonstrates the fierce competition for top spots in the rankings this year.

5. U.S. News and World Report adds new subjects to the rankings.

This year, four new disciplines were added to the subject-specific rankings, including: ecology; green and sustainable science and technology; environmental engineering; and marine and freshwater biology. These additions not only demonstrate the ranking system’s commitment to reflecting the most relevant information in higher education today, but also provide a glimpse into recent trends and changes in the disciplinary offerings at the most prestigious universities in the world.

The 2024–2025 U.S. News and World Report Rankings offer students valuable information regarding the trends in the global higher education landscape. While students should take their personal preferences and the intangible elements of a school’s culture that draw them to a specific school into account, these rankings can be a helpful first step for students as they set their collegiate goals and assemble their college lists.

“We’re pleased to be on in this list and encouraged to see our College climb in the rankings,” Acting Dean Indira Chatterjee said. “This reflects the quality of our faculty, staff and students as well as our commitment to provide a globally competitive education.”

The College is on the cusp of expansion: a new industrial engineering program is set to debut in fall 2024, and the aerospace program — which currently offers a minor degree — will expand to offer additional degrees in years to come, thanks to the $36 million Gillemot gift announced in fall 2023.

U.S. News bases its Best Engineering Schools graduate school rankings on research activity, faculty resources, academic achievements of entering students, and assessments by other engineering schools and employers. This year’s methodology changed slightly. U.S. News reports that a few bibliometrics (the application of statistical methods to the study of bibliographic data) were incorporated, and the faculty resource metrics for master’s degree students were dropped. Those changes were due in part to a 2023 American Society for Engineering Education survey.

College of Social Sciences and Public Policy

Overview of Graduate Program

Our graduate program is nationally recognized and offers three main areas of concentration: Health and Aging, Inequalities and Social Justice, and Demography. Among public universities, we are ranked the 29th best sociology graduate program in the nation and the 2nd best in the 17 states that make up the Southern United States (U.S. News). Among 118 public and private sociology programs across the nation, we rank among the top 20% with regard to the number of publications and grants per faculty member (The National Research Council).

Our faculty have won national, regional, and university-wide awards for teaching, mentoring, and research. We have been distinguished as Fulbright Scholars, recognized with named professorships, honored with article and book awards from sociological organizations, awarded research grants from state and federal funding agencies, and served as leaders in regional and national academic associations. Several of our professors are affiliated with and some have directed FSU’s  Pepper Institute on Aging and Public Policy  and the  Center for Demography and Population Health .

Our department offers advanced training in both qualitative and quantitative research methods, paid teaching and research assistantships that come with tuition waivers, a culture of collaboration and support, and a program for learning how to teach at the college level. Students typically finish their required coursework after two years, defend their master’s theses during their second year, pass an area comprehensive exam during their third year, begin teaching and writing a dissertation prospectus during their fourth year, and complete and defend dissertations during their 5th year. Our graduates typically secure jobs as professors at research universities and liberal arts colleges or as researchers in nonprofits and government agencies.

Application Deadline & Requirements

Our admissions committee selectively admits about 10 new graduate students each year. A minimum GPA of 3.0 during the last two years of undergraduate study is required, a background in sociology and doing well in an undergraduate statistics course is desirable. There is no GRE requirement. Our committee evaluates each applicant’s entire file holistically in making admission decisions. Strong letters of recommendation, a clear and focused personal statement, your research interests fit with faculty expertise, and an exemplary academic writing sample are at least as important as other factors. If you have faced difficulties that have negatively affected your record or you have additional strengths that you believe will ensure success in our graduate program, discuss them in your personal statement and the committee will take them into consideration.

Applications for our Graduate Program must be completed by  February 15 , 2024  for students to be eligible for funding from the university.

Completing your application

A complete application includes (1) mailing official undergraduate/graduate transcripts sent directly to FSU’s Office of Admissions at 282 Champions Way, Tallahassee FL 32306-2400, and (2) supply the requested information and upload documents to the  Graduate School’s Application Portal , including:

  • Personal Statement : Upload a 2-3 page statement that highlights your relevant training and experiences, your sociological interests and career goals, and why our department is the right place for you to continue your education.
  • Academic Writing Sample : Upload a copy of a sole-authored paper, such as an undergraduate course paper, an honor’s thesis, Master’s thesis, or publication. The paper should showcase your writing abilities, demonstrate critical thinking skills, and reveal your potential to succeed in our graduate program.
  • Transcripts : Upload copies (unofficial is fine) of undergraduate and graduate transcripts.
  • TOEFL with a minimum of 550 paper, 213 computer, or 80 Internet based
  • Cambridge C1 Advanced Level with a minimum score of 180
  • Michigan Language Assessment with a minimum score of 55
  • Countries Exempt from English Language Proficiency Requirement:  https://gradschool.fsu.edu/admissions/international-admissions

Graduate programs recognized in U.S. News rankings

By Hanna Quinlan Public Affairs

  • Campus News

University of Michigan graduate programs are among the best in the nation, according to the U.S. News & World Report’s 2022 edition of Best Graduate Schools. The rankings were released March 30.

U.S. News annually ranks six professional school programs and specialties in the areas of business, education, engineering, law, nursing and medicine, while other schools, as well as disciplines and specialties in the sciences, social sciences and humanities, health and other areas are only ranked periodically.

U-M maintained top-15 rankings in these newly ranked schoolwide categories:

  • The College of Engineering ranked No. 7.
  • The School of Nursing master’s program ranked No. 11, and its Doctor of Nursing Practice program ranked No. 14.
  • The Law School ranked No. 10.
  • The Stephen M. Ross School of Business ranked No. 13.
  • The School of Education ranked No. 9.
  • The Medical School’s research program ranked No. 15, and its primary-care program ranked No. 15.
  • The Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy ranked No. 7.
  • The School of Information ranked No. 6.
  • The School of Public Health ranked No. 4.

U.S. News also published rankings for Ph.D. programs in economics, English, history, sociology and political science. The updated U-M rankings this year include:

  • Economics (12).
  • English (8).
  • History (2).
  • Political science (4).
  • Sociology (2).

  • Summary of Flint rankings

The rankings are based on expert opinions about program excellence and statistical indicators that measure the quality of a school’s faculty, research and students.

While the university values the measurements of academic and research performance, U-M officials note that rankings cannot fully account for or capture the university’s mission. With the challenges posed by COVID-19, what matters most in choosing a school is the match between the particular interests, abilities and ambitions of each student with the specific programs, approaches and opportunities offered by a particular school.

In addition to the overall program rankings, U-M was rated on 102 specialties. Of those, five were ranked first: higher education administration, nuclear engineering, social policy, American politics and historical sociology.

UTA’s graduate engineering programs among nation’s best

Wednesday, Jun 26, 2024 • Brian Lopez : contact

A UTA student in an engineering lab

The University of Texas at Arlington’s graduate engineering programs were ranked among the top 100 in the nation in the latest U.S. News & World Report rankings, the latest sign of academic excellence at UTA.

Additionally, the civil and mechanical engineering graduate programs each improved by three spots over the previous year.

“There are many ways to determine the quality of academic programs. These rankings are a very visible piece of information for students as they consider where to pursue a graduate degree, but certainly not the only mechanism by which students and families determine quality and potential for student opportunities,” said Peter Crouch, dean of the College of Engineering. “As a Carnegie R-1 university in the heart of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, UTA provides our students unique opportunities to pursue research and careers with many of the top companies in the world.”

UTA offers 13 master’s and 9 doctoral degree programs in seven departments:

  • Bioengineering
  • Civil engineering
  • Computer science and engineering
  • Electrical engineering
  • Industrial, manufacturing and systems engineering
  • Materials science and engineering
  • Mechanical and aerospace engineering

Being ranked among the best in the nation reflects the quality of the current engineering students, faculty, and staff and makes the University an attractive institution for top talent. An example of this can be seen in the recent recruitment of Hongtei Eric Tseng, a Distinguished University Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering.

Dr. Tseng is a member of the National Academy of Engineering with decades of experience in the automotive industry and over 100 U.S. patents, about a third of which are implemented in Ford vehicles.

He is the first faculty member hired under UTA’s Recruiting Innovative Scholars for Excellence (RISE) initiative, which represents a substantial investment in the future of UTA. Through RISE, the University seeks to recruit more than 100 new tenure-system faculty. Hiring at this scale often takes up to 15 years; UTA aims to achieve its faculty hiring goals by 2026. The $60 million effort is funded in part through the support of the UT System’s Regents Research Excellence program.

I was really happy to see that a program I'm interested in is now ranked (UMass Boston). The last time the rankings came out, I think UMB's PhD program was too new to be considered so it was nowhere on the list. I am not putting much bearing on the actual rank, but it's reassuring to see evidence that the program is known by its peers to some degree!

Selfishly happy to see UCI break T20 but at the same time, the reality is placement is what matters, no matter what U.S. News says. This does, however, seem to better reflect placement as of late.

Yale being in the T20 is odd (no offense to anyone who goes there — talking about placement, range of research) but okay then, U.S. News ...

Jacobs School of Engineering rises in the rankings

U.S. News gave high marks to a variety of programs at the Jacobs School of Engineering, which offers master's and doctoral degrees across its six engineering and computer science departments, along with many opportunities for specializations and focus areas. The Jacobs School of Engineering’s No. 11 ranking is up from No. 12 last year. Among public engineering schools, the Jacobs School of Engineering ranks as the No. 7 best engineering school in the nation, up from No. 8 last year.

“I am thrilled that our school-wide ranking improved this year. I am proud, I am excited—and I am also right back to work,” said Albert P. Pisano, dean of the UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering and Special Adviser to the Chancellor. “Rankings are recognition rather than definition, and these rankings recognize yet again our world-class school. We advance engineering and computer science research and education for the public good, and it’s wonderful to be recognized as we do this important work.”

The interdisciplinary engineering and computer science research underway at the Jacobs School tackles tough and relevant challenges that no single lab can address alone, with far-reaching positive impacts for human health, sustainable energy production and storage, trustworthy AI, and much more. Recently, researchers at the Jacobs School of Engineering developed a unique cancer immunotherapy based on a plant virus that has shown efficacy in animal models; designed a first-of-its kind wearable ultrasound patch that provides continuous, non-invasive monitoring of blood flow in the brain ; created new materials to build better batteries ; increased our understanding of how artificial intelligence systems learn , and applied AI to help newborns struggling to nurse .

The UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering also ranked No.1 in the nation among public engineering schools for citations per publication. Citation rankings are a new addition this year to the U.S. News Best Engineering Schools rankings methodology. According to U.S. News, they are included as a way to measure the scholarly impact that an engineering school’s faculty have in their field and the caliber of their research. In addition to the school-wide rankings, the following Jacobs School graduate programs were highly ranked by U.S. News: Biomedical (8); Computer Science: Systems (8); Computer Science: Artificial Intelligence (10); Computer Science: Programming Language (11); Computer Engineering (12); Computer Science (13); Electrical Engineering (14); Computer Science: Theory (15); Mechanical Engineering (17); and Aerospace Engineering (18).
