Every year since 2004, the Society for Responsible Design (SRD) in Sydney has been exhibiting graduate design projects which address issues of environmental change and responsibility, social equity and community ideas. This insightful exhibition, initially launched as ChangeX and now known as SRD Change, showcases exemplary graduate projects that inspire, provoke, and challenge conventional expectations of the design industry and businesses recently attuned to corporate responsibility. Works are selected from a diverse range of design disciplines across Sydney’s leading tertiary institutions. Design is reclaimed here as a tool for satisfying genuine human needs in ways that are both practical and imaginative, posing a compelling alternative to the contemporary (mis)use of design as an elitist, profit-driven enterprise fuelling unsustainable levels of consumption. Confirming the importance of higher education as an integral element to enabling meaningful change, SRD Change celebrates...

She Ji: The Journal of Design, Economics, and Innovation Volume 6, Issue 4, Winter 2020, Pages 505-529

Design practice is intrinsically about change and changing the world. Over the past two decades several new areas have emerged within design, such as service design, design thinking, speculative design, transition design and social design. What constitutes a desirable design outcome has also evolved. New design processes exist to enable those outcomes, and broader, more diverse communities often contribute to collective changemaking. Despite this, we still have a fragmented understanding of how to use design to create change, with a limited number of frameworks to guide its implementation in public and private settings. This article provides a brief overview of the recent developments in and through design that relate to how and why the usage of design has changed and how we design change. I look at the products, processes, and people related to change in design, and how design practice has fostered new roles in the field. In depth interviews with expert designers, and their insights about these roles, have been used to open up the discussion of what questions designers are aiming to define and answer, with whom, and how. The present paper intends to present the early stage on a bigger attempt to discuss design education and its role in a paradigm shift moment, pointing the need to change how designers think and learn to face wicked problems in a more complex society. New active methodologies will be considered in order to promote a teaching-learning process that reinforces the construction of new competencies, which increases students' perception of the reality that surrounds them and makes them evident the impact of design processes and solutions. This conceptual broadening will make them more socially responsible agents, aware of the importance of their civic action and active role towards innovation, social wellbeing, and Sustainability.

nid thesis report

National Institute of Design, Bhopal

Responding to the Institute’s aspirationin bringing about design-based education reform in the country, the spatial design of the campus aims at maximizing opportunities for interaction, engagement and cross-fertilization of ideas betweendifferent creative disciplines.Spread over 30 acres of land, and located in the industrial region of Achar Pura district, the challenges of a contoured site and uneven soil conditions were used as an opportunity to envisage an academic hub that evolved with theoptimization of the natural slope. The site planning adopts a landscape-integrated approach, where the placement of built volumes respects climatic factors to create a comfortable and visually aesthetic environment. The thoughtful conceptualisation of the campus layout is rooted in the NID logo, with triangulation finding manifestation in both two and three dimensions. The design emanates from the premise that institutions are not isolated entities in their own context. They form an environment, a precinct, or neighborhood-supporting community activities, thatare crucial for all academic institutions. The students and faculty get the opportunity to learn both inside and outside the studio space, being engaged in an integrated process of designing, developing, constructing, and operating state-of-the-art buildings that will, in turn, influence them to adapt their own behavior when they occupy it. Echoing the pretext, the ‘Creative Spine’ forms the key feature around which spatial planning of the entire campus has been developed, enable placement of built volumes to ensure minimal conflicts in the circulation patterns of different users. The entrance drop-off is greeted by the administrative blockthat houses directors and officers,in order tocreate a grand impression on the visitors’ minds. Upon transcendingthe admin block, one witnesses the creative spine, designed as a series of interactive nodes and landscape plazas, flanked by studios and classrooms on one side and workshops on the other, that aim to foster a rapid exchange of intellectual and technical knowledge. The semi-open circulation corridors, dawned by a canopy, link and penetrate the volumetric platforms of the academic blocks, allowing spaces to broadcast a collaborative nature of design. The interiors of the classrooms and workshops have been carefully designed, keeping at par with the requirements of a new-age design studio, making them collaborative, interactive and adaptable, thereby deviating from a pattern ofconventionality. Workshops are designed as double height spaces to accommodate heavy machinery. The academic area is closely connected to hostel accommodations;both the girls’ and boys’ hostels are segregated by a common mess and a health center offering recreational facilities such as a gymnasium with steam room, indoor sports club & yoga space on the terrace. The residential accommodation for professors and teachers has been dually segregated from the hostel blocksto ensure privacy. The academic and hostel blocks are pierced by the sports facility, housing a football court, tennis court, basketball court and a jogging track for the students.A dedicated auditorium has been designed in close proximity to the academic block and the library, with provision of a separate parking for 500 ECUs. Additionally, the amphitheater, meant to act as a congregation spot for events, adorns a veil of landscape, housing a cafeteria underneath. The path from the administrative block to the library, located at the highest point on the site, is punctuated by an elaborate, stepped landscape, aesthetically and functionally accentuated by planters that double up as seating spots for the students as well as the faculties. The idea was to create spaces thatreinforcethe students’ individuality by allowingfor privacy, yet ensuring a feeling of openness, being cocooned within a bigger space.Designed to create a feeling of grandeur, the elevation treatment attempts to break away from the traditional notions of design.A façade that clearly reflects the triangular form inspired from the NID logo, coupled withthe exterior of various zonal blocks that seamlessly integrates the columns, lendsa sense of coherenceand homogeneity to the overall design language. Conceived to be self-sustainable, National Institute of Design, Bhopal, has been carefully planned to account for future expansion. Energy efficiency has been the core of the design process, aimed to reduce dependence on energy with passive solar techniques, attention to orientation and facilitating wind movement.Fromutilizing treated water from the STP to incorporating dual flushing systems, the entire campus has been carefully integrated with green building strategies to minimize operational costs, thereby achieving the standards of being certifiedwith an IGBC Gold Rating. Overall, the design of the NIDinstitute aims topursue the concept of a “building that educates”; It successfully embodies the principles of pedagogical integration and flexibility, whileassimilating organicenvironmentalvariables along with the pre-existing elements of the landscape. Being an academic institution of national importance, National Institute of Design, Bhopal, truly reflects the spatial components present in the collective memory of the institution.

  • Tied to Time: Vision vs Reality of designed spaces (NID)

Roshini Pushparaj

The intent of the studio is to design a research/exhibition proposal. Module 1 required us to research on a specific building (National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad), under the purview of construction and making histories. The second module takes the findings of Module 1 and curate a narrative from the range of evidence found. Module 2, consisting of reading and writing workshops, then strengthened the argument we adopted, from which emerges this proposal. This exhibition is called "Tied to Time: Transformation of NID as a response to changing needs of the institution; the vision versus the reality of designed spaces" and the project abstract is as follows: The exhibition views post-independence architecture in India, using NID as an opportunity to explore ideas of adaptation as visualized in design vs how it plays out in reality.  This study views NID at intervals of 10 years across 60 years, adopting a specific lens for institutional construction history through its other histories, such as structure, approach and pedagogy. Initiating the study of changes in the built form of NID by drawing out a 1:5 sectional perspective that highlights the architectural characteristics embodying the vision of NID. Oral interviews, photo archives, and architectural drawings of the building juxtapose the physicality of the structure with the human intent of maintenance, analyzing the structure at various intervals across its 60-year life.  The exhibition brings out an analysis through mapping the design changes in the building. By observing the after-construction life of the building and habitation through usage, their demands, their maintenance and the final deciding factors of the institutions’ leadership and other histories, the study aims to bring out patterns of ageing and adaptation to internal and external affairs of the time. Furthermore, the sectional perspectives, in comparison with the parallel timeline of the funding organization, institutional leadership and social events at large, the building is presented with broader changes in the same exhibition to allow the viewer to consider possible relations between the built structure and the influences of funding/management/politics.  A clear emergence from the exhibition is the reversible and irreversible changes in the building. This methodology of an on-site approach in studying a live structure is useful to understand how a built structure moves beyond the realm of design narratives - emancipate the audience from anchoring design changes to design alone and focus on avenues that may have harbored those ideas. Hence, the target audience is ideally the architectural academia, construction industries and funding organizations.

Campus Life at National Institute of Design

nid thesis report

Celebrated for its service in the realm of creativity, innovation, and design, the National Institute of Design is an autonomous public design institute disseminated across several parts of India — Ahmedabad , Bangalore, Bhopal, Vijayawada and many more. These institutes are deemed to be the most accomplished institutes for design and creativity. It is said to give a heads up to one’s career once being associated with these institutes.

NIDs are recognised by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research under the Ministry of Science and Technology , the government of India, as a scientific and industrial design research organisation.

Hostel | National Institute of Design

Campus Life at National Institute of Design Sheet5

Due to the large intake of and to provide ease to the students, the institute offers hostel facilities for boys and girls. This facility is available for undergraduate students at the Paldi campus and postgraduates at the Gandhinagar campus. They approximately accommodate around 450 – 200 students. Even though the Bangalore campus is a non-residential campus, they do make arrangements for students as per the need; near the campus for an easy commute. If for any reason, the hostel facility is not convenient for the students, they can make their arrangements.

The priority for the hostel is for the outstation students. The students who choose to stay at the hostel must follow the rules and regulations. The warden in each hostel looks after the safety of the hostel. The hostel provides a safe atmosphere for the students.

Health Care

The health and safety of the students are a priority of the administration at NIDs. Each campus has a dispensary for the health and safety of the people on the campus. A doctor is available for the given time frame but there is no hospitalisation facility on the campus. Mediclaim is compulsory during the admission of a student and all the payments of the dispensary are to be borne by the students.

In case of poor health, the student must inform the warden for necessary help. If needed, the student can be rushed to the hospital . The student can also stay at the local guardians’ place but this must be informed to the warden in advance.

Criteria for Entrance

Like most other institutes, one has to undergo few examinations for entrance in these reputed institutes. Students have to appear for NID Design Aptitude Test Prelims, a two-tier examination with one prelim and mains. NID DAT Prelims is a written exam with both subjective and objective questions. It takes place in the first week of January every year. This is followed by a studio test or mains with audiovisual questions and an interview round at the end. These exams test a candidate’s ability to work under pressure, skills, and behavioural abilities.

Types Of Courses Offered

Campus Life at National Institute of Design Sheet3

The first year is common for everyone where students have to deal with several subjects. The course is designed to help strengthen a design perception, understand the multidisciplinary nature of design with culture , environment, and emotions. The first year entails subjects like basic design, liberal arts, and much more. It is the second year where they have a choice to select their preferred stream where they can specialize. While different NIDs have a variety of courses, the goal of giving quality education to students remains the same. NID Ahmedabad has 8 Bachelor’s degree programmes and 7 masters. A Ph.D. programme of 5 years has been introduced at the Ahmedabad campus. NID Gandhinagar has 7 master’s programmes and NID Bangalore has 5 masters programmes of 2.5 years.

NID Ahmedabad offers courses like Furniture design, product design, interior design, animation film design, graphic design, ceramic design, exhibition design, textile design and much more.

nid thesis report

NID Gandhinagar offers New media design, photography, strategic media management, apparel design, toy, and game design.

NID Bangalore offers Universal design, Dame design, Interaction design, Information design.

Career Options After Completion Of College | National Institute of Design

While a student has a bunch of options to choose from, some students consider pursuing higher education abroad, some go for a job to explore the corporate world and then go for personal practice, some even go for their own startup. It is clear that education from this prestigious institute opens your door to a variety of options.

Students often get placement opportunities from their specialized industry . Multidisciplinary education is celebrated everywhere and keeps the students one step ahead. However, career options are more of a personal choice and highly depend on the students.

Campus life And Facilities

Campus Life at National Institute of Design Sheet4

Being a design committed institute, the spaces in the institute are designed carefully keeping the aesthetic and comfort in mind. The campuses are lush green, serene, alluring, and peaceful in the centre of the city. The campus provides various facilities for the convenience of the students and also entertainment of the students. Due to the pertinent location of the institute, students can find all the required stores nearby.

Dining Facility

Each hostel has a mess that is run by the institute on a contractual basis. There is a committee for the mess that oversees the operation and notes the demands of the students. The menu is based on the preference of the majority of students. The students have to pay for the mess in advance at the beginning of the semester. The food is scrumptious and the importance of nutrients and a healthy diet are kept in mind.

Extra-curricular Activities

Campus Life at National Institute of Design Sheet6

The NIDs promote a healthy learning environment but also concentrate on extracurricular activities. The students’ activity committee – SAC (non-political and non-administrative body) is a social-cultural organization to promote student-friendly services of sports and any other interests. The students contribute some funds and hence the expenses are met. This committee also deals with other committees to plan various social and cultural events for the students and maintain and stimulate the environment. Each campus has facilities for indoor and outdoor games.

nid thesis report

NIDs celebrate culture, race, a festival with enthusiasm as it caters to the crowd from all over the nation. The students learn compassion and sensitivity towards other’s beliefs. Each NID has a grand Monsoon Fiesta which is an amalgamation of sports, arts, and creative events. Each NID has a grand celebration for the renowned festival of the state — Navratri in Ahmedabad — but they also celebrate other festivals with enthusiasm. They also have an active film club, music room for music and film lovers.

Study Environment And Student Life | National Institute of Design

nid thesis report

The student life on the campus is always pleasurable. As the campus has students from all over the world, the days are refreshing and students get to interact, learn, and keep themselves inspired from the crowd encircling them. It is the first year when you have trouble fitting in however the interesting subjects and people help you through it. Students get to explore a lot of things in the first year like drawing, paint, woodcarving, craft, films, culture, and much more. The second year is when students choose their specialized field.

The students provoke each other to do better and ignite their curious minds. The seniors are accommodating and would get to know you. NID encourages you to become inquisitive, have a thirst for wonder and discovery, and fuel the thought process without you even knowing it. The stories of other students and their experiences encourage others to be better people. The difference in culture makes you aware of art, life and the hardships students have faced.

By the time students graduate from here not only are they highly creative and compassionate but they also learn to respect mankind which is what we all can hope for. Students are ready to take on challenges that help not only in academic development but also prepare them for the real world.

As far as the work environment goes, students strive for perfection and often achieve it. Professors are often around to help and try their level best. The seniors help students when needed and the campus is like a huge family where everyone has got your back when needed. The campus has beautiful spaces to study — the lush green lawn, the delightful classroom, the canteen, the library. The library is filled with interesting books, movies, and magazines for students to devour. Students find knowledge and inspiration in every nook and that is what education at NID is all about

Counselling | National Institute of Design

It is seen from time to time that students struggle with mental health issues, disorders, or unhealthy addictions in the pressure of studies, peer pressure, or some unknown issues. The least an institute can do is help in every way possible so that the issues don’t get more acute. These institutes offer professional counselling for students and the needy. The counsellors are available when needed, however, a prior appointment is advisable.

In conclusion, students from NID develop a strong sense of design and creativity. The education here encourages you to learn more with the welcoming environment and helpful faculty as well as students. Students often describe their time here as a beautiful memory close to their hearts. NID welcomes the students with a warm heart and teaches them to strive for betterment.

The identity of this book edited by the late I.S. Mathur is established by its leitmotif—training the teachers of design or educating the design educators. This book is divided into three major sections—‘Retrospection’, ‘Introspection’, and ‘Perception’. A mélange of thoughts, experiences, and anecdotes expressed by alumni, faculty both former and present, and artists—this book touches upon poignant issues which can influence the spread of design education across design schools/institutions in India.
