How do I get my CLEP scores? 

The great thing about CLEP is that you can access your scores as soon as you’re finished with the exam. You can view your results a few different ways, which we’ve listed below: 

1. Get your unofficial score report

After taking your exam, you’ll receive an unofficial score report before leaving the test center. The only exception is for the “College Composition” and “Spanish with Writing” exams. These exams require human evaluation and cannot be scored immediately. You’ll be notified via email when your scores are available, typically within 2 – 3 weeks. 

2. Get your official score online 

You can also view your official scores online by logging into your CLEP My Portal account. Use the same login information you used to register for the exam. Once logged in, go to the My CLEP Exam Scores page to view your results. Your scores will be available online one business day following your exam. 

3. Get your score on screen after taking a remote exam 

If you take an exam remotely, your score will be displayed on screen immediately after completion of the exam.

How are CLEP exams scored? 

Nearly all exams are multiple-choice and scored by a computer, with the exception of the “College Composition” and “Spanish with Writing” exams. These tests feature essay questions in addition to multiple choice sections. The essays are graded by a committee of college professors, then combined with the multiple choice scores. 

For multiple choice questions, you receive one point for each correct answer. Points aren’t deducted for wrong or skipped answers, meaning you should strive to answer each question on the exam. There’s no harm in guessing if you’re not sure about the right answer. 

Exams are scored on a scale from 20 to 80. The American Council on Education (ACE) recommends that colleges grant credit for a score of 50 or higher, but schools are allowed to set their own policies. Use this searchable database to check the CLEP policies of the schools you’re interested in.

How do I send my scores? 

To receive credit for taking CLEP exams, you’ll need to send your scores to your preferred college or university. When you register for your exam, you’ll be prompted to select the institution where you’d like to send your scores. Your score will be immediately sent to this school once you complete your exam, unless you decide to opt out (see the next section). You can send your score to one institution for free.

If you want to send your score to more than one college, you must request a transcript and pay a $20 fee for each additional institution. To do this, go to your My CLEP Account menu and select “Request a Transcript”. The transcript request process is slightly different for military test takers .

Do I have to send my scores? 

No. The College Board gives you the option of canceling your score to prevent it from getting sent to your school. However, you have to make the decision to cancel before knowing whether you passed or not. Because of this, it’s best to go ahead and send in your score (even if you feel like you failed). 

The only time you might cancel your score is if your college has a limit on CLEP attempts and you’re nearly certain you failed. However, most colleges have no such limit. As a result, you should hardly ever choose to cancel your scores.

Can I retake CLEP exams? 

Yes. If you didn’t pass the first time around, you can retake the exam after three months. If you retake the exam within the three-month period, your score will be considered invalid, and your test fee will be forfeited.

Will a failed CLEP exam affect my GPA?

Failed CLEP exams will not affect your GPA, nor will they change any admissions decisions by a school. The only downside to a failed exam is the money and time spent on it. You won’t be able to take it again for another three months, but once you become eligible again, you can learn from your mistakes, retake it, and make use of all the time you’ve spent studying.

What are DSST exams like?

What if the school did not receive my exam score?

Score reports are sent to the school/institution you designated on test day. Your school/institution should receive your score report within 90 days of your test date. A delayed score may be the result of an incorrect institution code. If your score report is delayed, contact your school directly.

What if there are testing irregularities?

Testing irregularities that affect the test taker can occasionally occur, such as administrative errors, defective materials, availability of test content and other disruptions of test administrations. The Principles of Public Speaking DSST covers what a student would learn during a single semester of a college Speech or Communication class.

Specific topics covered include Creating and Structuring Introductions, Articulation, Listening Techniques, and Critiquing and evaluating the effectiveness in public speaking.

Personal Thoughts:

The Principles of Public Speaking DSST is probably one of the most confusing exams that Prometric offers. Though they do a great job of explaining what it consists of on the Fact Sheet; most people still get caught by surprise on the actual exam. The reason? Lack of preparing for that second portion - The dreaded speech.

Though the first portion (the Questions) aren't timed, the second portion (The Speech) is, and it's the part that most people run into problems. Here's the breakdown of how the speech portion works.

When you're finished with the question portion, the proctor will give you a specific topic (more on that later), and your intended audience. At this point, you get 10 minutes to write a 3-5 minute speech. If your speech comes in below 3 minutes, or above five minutes, you automatically fail the exam. Sounds pretty harsh at first, but it's actually pretty kind. They give you a whole minute and a half of wiggle room.

The speech itself is graded on a pass/fail basis. So as long as you make the argument convincing and keep within the time limits, you should be okay. We're going to cover the whole speech section a bit later on, but for now let's look at the Question portion of the exam.

• Sparknotes on Public Speaking - My love affair with Sparknotes continues. This should take no longer than 10 minutes to read completely, and has a TON of great information that you'll undoubtedly see again on the actual exam. Just keep hitting "Next" and pay attention to the terminology as you come across it.
• The Art of Public Speaking (Companion Site) - You'll see this title mentioned quite often in the forum links below. It seems the home page for this book has been moved, but here's the updated link to the first chapter. How hard are CLEP exams?

It’s all relative. Depending on your strengths and background, an exam that is difficult for most could be a breeze for you (or vice-versa). However, we can get a general idea of difficulty by reviewing last year’s pass rates for each exam .

How are CLEP exams scored?

CLEP has a wonky “scaled score” similar to the SATs. It’s not a 0-100 scale like typical tests. Rather, it uses a  20 – 80 scale, with a score of 50 as the recommended passing grade.  The tricky part is that no one knows  exactly  what percentage is needed to pass. That’s because for each subject, there’s different versions of the test. Some are more difficult than others, and the easier versions are graded more harshly than the harder versions of the same subject’s exam.

Points are not deducted for incorrect answers. You receive points for correct answers.

What percentage do I need to get correct?

So here’s the scoop. No one  really  knows what percentage is needed to pass.  You’ll never see your raw score on the front-end. This is because on the back-end, the  point value of the questions is different for each person  — based on the difficulty of the particular  version  of the exam you receive.

Got an easy version of the exam? You’ll need to get more questions correct to pass. You get a tough version? Your questions are worth more, and you’ll need fewer correct to pass.

What we do know is that College Board says that their recommended passing score of 50, is equivalent to C-level proficiency. 

People speculate  (emphasis on speculate)  that anywhere between 60 – 70% may be needed to pass, but this will vary on how difficult your exam is. It’s best to just shoot for the higher percentage, and not risk wasting your time.

In my experience, I’ve always shot toward 70% or higher on practice exams. Using that standard, I’ve never had a problem passing the actual exam.

What is a passing score at my school?

When it comes to setting a “passing” score, most schools look to the American Council on Education  (ACE) for recommendations. Each year, the organization reviews the content of CLEP exams, and determines what the recommended passing score is (and how many credits they think schools should award.) ACE typically recommends a score of “50” as the minimum to pass.

Many schools follow ACE’s recommendations, some set their own.

ACE guidelines  do change on occasion. For example, last year the recommended credit value for Humanities dropped from 6 credits to 3. Unfortunately, cash-strapped schools don’t typically update their CLEP information in a timely fashion. That’s why it’s important to confirm credit values with your advisor before taking the exam.

Do CLEP exams transfer?

Just because your existing school accepted CLEP for credit, doesn’t mean your transfer school will recognize it the same way. When transferring, your new school will evaluate your scores independently, applying their own standards to determine whether you’ll receive credit, and what requirements the exam will fulfill.

How long should I study?

Everyone circumstance is different. Students report studying over the course of a few days, all the way up to a few months for a single exam. The best indicator of your readiness is your performance on practice exams. It’s helpful to get your hands on as many practice tests as possible. Once I hit 70% correct, I felt ready to proceed to the exam. Can  you get away with less? Sure. Many people do. Whether you want to try cutting it close or not, is a decision you’ll have to make for yourself. For me, it’s not worth the risk.

Do all schools accept CLEP exams?

Many do, but several don’t. It’s important to contact your school for a list of what CLEP exams they accept, their minimum passing score, and credit equivalent for each.

The College Board website and your school’s website can both be decent indicators of whether they accept CLEP. However, go in with the knowledge that the published information is often out of date or incomplete.

What happens if I fail?

As of late 2018, the current re-test wait period is three (3) months. Schools may have their own policies that prohibit retesting, so it’s important to check with your university.

If I fail a class, can I take a CLEP instead?

Every school’s policy is different on this. However, many do not allow students to CLEP-out of a class they’ve previously failed.  Some do.

Can I take CLEP exams online?

No. CLEP exams can only be taken in-person through official testing centers .

How will CLEP appear on my transcript?

Every school is different, but most apply CLEP similar to transfer credit. It will appear on your transcript, will carry credit, and will fulfill certain requirements, but it will not have a score or impact your GPA.

Will CLEP impact my GPA?

Most schools only list CLEP as pass/fail on the transcript. It carries credit, but doesn’t typically list a score or impact your GPA.

This is a good thing, and a bad thing. On the one hand, a passing score on the low end of the scale won’t negatively drop your GPA. On the other hand, if you take several CLEP exams, you now have to rely on a smaller number of courses to calculate your GPA — so a single low grade will have a greater impact.

Is there a maximum number of CLEP exams I can take?

It’s critically important that you check your school’s policies on this, as they’re all different. Some of the limitations I’ve seen include:

• Limits on the maximum number of CLEP credits.
• Limits on  when you can take CLEP exams.
• Limits on whether you must be enrolled at the time of the exam.

What is the difference between the College Composition and College Composition Modular exams?

Don’t be surprised if advisors and testing centers don’t know the difference. The CLEP website is a bit unclear on this.

Simply put, the College Composition exam includes a multiple choice section, and a written essay section. The Modular typically only contains the multiple choice section.

Some schools weigh these two versions of the exam differently, so it’s important to check with your advisor before taking the exam.

Warnings to Keep in Mind

• All schools value CLEP differently (or not at all).
• Prior to taking the exam, credit values can change.
• Just because one school accepted it, doesn’t mean another will.
