It’s no wonder that the HR occupation is so desirable. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS),  the median salary  for an HR manager is $126,230 per year, and the demand for these roles is expected to grow seven percent annually (faster than average).

Specifically, people flock to recruiting because it allows them to leave a tangible mark on the company. Whether you’re working at an agency or internally at a company, recruiters have a knack for matching the right people to the right jobs. 

More than that, recruiters manage the interview process (for both the candidate and company), work with hiring teams to determine their hiring needs, create job descriptions, and manage offers and negotiations for each person brought into the company.

How can you include all of those responsibilities on a single-page resume? You have so many valuable attributes that it’s a challenge to limit your resume to just one sheet of paper.

These tips will help you cut through the noise and make your resume the strongest it can be for any recruiting role. As a recruiter, you know people are more than their resumes, but a good resume makes a positive impression and gets the hiring manager interested in you.

In short, here’s what you need to do:

  • Include the right skills to get past ATS filters and appeal to the hiring manager.
  • Get the format right. Your resume has to be readable even at a glance.
  • Quantify your impact to prove your demonstrable impact.
  • Tailor your resume for each job application to make the case that you’re the right recruiter for the job.

Highlight your recruiter skills

You likely already know this process, but we’ll just recap the steps of a typical resume review process:

  • Companies apply filters in their applicant tracking system (ATS) to weed out applicants based on specific keyword matching.
  • The hiring manager (an HR leader) reviews the resumes that make it through the ATS filters and reaches out for preliminary phone interviews.

So the goal of the  skills section on your resume  is to get past both of these steps.

If you were just going to get past the ATS, you would stuff your resume with all of the keywords in the job description. Sadly, that wouldn’t help you pass the second step, since keyword-stuffing raises many red flags for the hiring manager. What do you do?

First, read the  recruiter job description . Read their required skills, and if you have those skills, then you should include them. The key here is to include a majority of hard skills, not soft skills.

Soft skills without context fail to offer any new information to the resume reviewer. Hard skills demonstrate your prowess and are more measurable. 

However, if you’re just starting out, you can include more soft skills to make up for your lack of technical expertise (you can learn these skills on the job).

Recruiter skills to include on your resume

  • Microsoft Excel, Powerpoint, Word
  • HR information systems (Workday, Oracle HCM, Zoho, SAP)
  • ATS (Greenhouse, Lever, Workable, Breezy HR, BambooHR)
  • Sourcing tools (LinkedIn Recruiter, TalenNest, Connectifier)
  • Full-cycle recruiting, intakes, sourcing, screening, and evaluating talent
  • CRM (Hubspot, Marketo, Hootsuite)

When you’re deciding what to include in your skills section, ask yourself, “Would I be comfortable being interviewed about that skill? Can I demonstrate my abilities?” If the answer to both is “no,” then leave that skill off your resume.

One last thing to note: we’re sure you’ve seen your fair share of candidates embellish skills on their resumes. This is a quick way to get blacklisted from potentially working for that employer, so  always be honest about your proficiencies . If you’re not an expert, don’t claim you are; instead, demonstrate your willingness to learn that skill when you create a cover letter .

Make sure your resume format is correct

You know that recruiters have to scan through dozens of resumes before they find the candidates they need. On average, a recruiter spends  just over seven seconds reviewing any given resume .

So, make your resume as easy to read as possible. It will help recruiters see that you’re a strong candidate for the role and deserve a phone interview.

How can you do that? Here are some quick tips:

  • Keep your resume to one page.
  • Break up text into smaller, consumable bullet points.
  • Make your resume computer-readable. Avoid using images, icons, or fancy formatting that is hard for a computer to scan.
  • Put the title of the role you want under your name. So if you’re applying for a senior recruiter role, you should make your title “senior recruiter.”
  • Leave out the objective or summary unless you’re an entry-level candidate (objective) or you have more than a decade of experience (summary)
  • Check your resume  multiple times  for spelling or grammar errors.

All of these points serve one goal:  make the job of the person reviewing your resume as easy as possible.  Try this experiment—which work experience entry is easier to read quickly?

What’s the difference between a resume objective and a resume summary?

  • Resume objective: A way to concisely demonstrate your passion and goals regarding a given role or company.
  • Resume summary: A summary of your qualifications (hence the name) for the role to which you’re applying.

We recommend you omit a  resume summary  unless you have at least 10 years of work history.

You should only include a resume objective if you have a passion for the role or company you’re applying to or are undergoing a career change. If you’re using the same resume objective for multiple applications, you should just exclude it.

You’ve likely seen it when reviewing resumes—a  resume objective  or summary that’s generic and provides no new information about a candidate’s qualifications.

Objectives and summaries like this take up valuable real estate that could be used for work experience. Don’t waste space by providing generic, unconvincing information.

Quantify the impact of your work

our work experience makes or breaks the case for you to get a phone interview . How do you get it right?

Be descriptive and tie your work to demonstrable outcomes for the business where you worked. The best way to make your case that you’re a great fit for a role is through numbers. 

The first step is being descriptive. You shouldn’t mention every single task you did, but do be sure to avoid sweeping generalities about your contribution to a project.

For example, saying “worked to improve interviewing efficiency” is not nearly as compelling as “implemented more robust first-stage candidate screenings, increasing the on-site offer rate by 17%”.

WRONG—avoid vague statements

You’ll notice a formula when talking about work experience.  Generally, you should mention the specific work you did and follow it up with a tangible outcome for that work .

Ways to quantify your impact as a recruiter

  • How much you improved time-to-hire
  • Number of candidates that you reviewed, sourced, or interviewed
  • How much you improved the efficiency of the interview process through new processes or screening procedures
  • How much you increased employee retention
  • How much you improved the candidate interview experience
  • How much money you saved by identifying under-performing candidate acquisition channels

Making a case with numbers (even if they’re estimates) is always more convincing, so strive to quantify your impact whenever possible.

Entry-level recruiter resume projects

What should you discuss on your resume for entry-level recruiters who don’t have work experience yet?  Anything that will make a convincing case that you’ll be a strong recruiter.  

Demonstrate the skills you need to be a great recruiter. Did you do something where you had to organize large groups of people? Coordinate efforts across different groups? Recruit volunteers?

Sample resume projects for entry-level recruiters

  • How many people did you connect with and engage in follow-up conversations? Talk about that.
  • Recruiters practically live on LinkedIn, so mention your methodology and your performance metrics.
  • As a recruiter, you need the ability to organize groups of people. Talk about how you convinced people to join the club.
  • Talk about how you were able to recruit volunteers and demonstrate the outcomes of your volunteer efforts.
  • Social media capability can be a massive asset for a recruiter! How much interaction did you get on that page? Did you drive any customers to the business?

If you lack relevant projects, then now would be a great time to get involved with one. The projects listed above should inspire you.

Before we move on, we’d like to reiterate our last point:  avoid  spelling or grammar errors.  When recruiters review hundreds of resumes, they’re looking for a quick reason to say “no.” A spelling or grammar error is the fastest, most avoidable reason to get your application rejected.

Don’t let a minor mistake be the reason you don’t get hired, so always  check your resume  before hitting “submit.”

Customize your resume for each job

We can already hear you groaning about this step; trust us, we know it’s a pain. It’s a lot of work to tailor your resume for each job. 

However, we’ve seen time and time again that recruiters get more interviews when they customize their resumes for each application.

How exactly do you customize your recruiter resume, though?

First, read the job description. When reading the job description, do any past projects you’ve worked on come to mind? Even if they’re tangentially related, you’ll stand out amongst the sea of applicants by including them.

Then, include any skills you have relevant to what they’re looking for in the job description. Based on the type of job you’re applying for, you want to make your experience relevant to that particular job.

Here are some ways you might do that for various recruiter job titles.

  • Have you worked on sourcing or evaluating for roles that require some type of technical knowledge?
  • Try to highlight the technical skills required for jobs you’ve done previously.
  • Demonstrate your interest and knowledge in the engineering field. Did you learn some basic programming? That would be a huge asset for technical recruiter roles.

Corporate recruiter resume tips

  • Demonstrate that you understand how hiring works from end to end within one company.
  • As opposed to a staffing recruiter, you want to show off your breadth of recruiting experience across all aspects of hiring.
  • Highlight your work across various aspects of the hiring process. From drafting job descriptions to sourcing to screening, you want to show you can own the recruiting cycle for roles within a single company.

Staffing recruiter resume tips

  • Companies typically hire recruiting agencies to help them with their hard-to-fill roles.
  • How did you find candidates for these roles? Talk about your methodology and outcomes.
  • For example, if you have an extensive network of accountants, talk that up on your resume.

Recruitment manager resume tips

  • If you have management experience already, talk about the size of the teams you managed and the outcomes for your team while you were in charge.
  • Be aware that good companies want to hire managers who take an interest in their employees’ career progressions. Can you demonstrate this?

Highlight Reels: A Proven Way To Start Your Resume And Win More Jobs

The Highlight Reel is exactly what it sounds like.

It's a section at the top of your resume that allows you to pick and choose the best and most relevant experience to feature right at the top of your resume.

It's essentially a highlight reel of your career as it relates to this specific role! I like to think about it as the SportsCenter Top 10 of your resume.

The Highlight Reel resume summary consists of 4 parts:

  • A relevant section title that ties your experience to the role
  • An introductory bullet that summarizes your experience and high-level value
  • A few supporting “Case Study” bullets that illustrate specific results, projects, and relevant experience
  • A closing “Extracurricular” bullet to round out your candidacy

For example, if we were writing a Highlight Reel for a Recruiter role, it might look like this:

Bullets make up the majority of the content in your resume. If you want to win, you need to know how to write bullets that are compelling and value-driven.

You may be able to find talent acquisition consultants and recruitment specialists for the company.

Second, if you're more interested in a general industry, such as media or marketing, consider turning to external headhunting agencies and firms that work with a variety of companies. You can connect with a national agency or see if there's a local firm nearby.

4. Make meaningful connections

When it comes to headhunters, it's also important to build meaningful working relationships. One of the easiest ways to start that process is to make sure you always respond to them when they contact you.

Take the so-called F-method. It's a way of organizing your résumé so that a recruiter can read the most important parts across the top — like the upper portion of the letter F.

The next most essential info goes farther down with keywords or points sticking out like the arm on an F.

The idea behind the framework is to help someone looking over your résumé get to the good stuff right away. That's because recruiters might spend only seconds scanning your work history and other accomplishments, and you need to make sure you really stand out, really quickly.

"The skills section on my résumé is in that 'F.' It's in that direct line of sight," Lee Woodrow, owner and principal consultant at Bigger Fish Executive Branding , told Business Insider.

Highlighting the top information right away is all the more important in an environment where it's getting harder to get desk jobs — and where the ease of applying means recruiters are often overrun with applications.

"It's an elevator pitch," he said. That information belongs at the top near your name, he said, so that it gets seen. "That entices the reader to read on."

It's also important, Woodrow said, to have the right words and phrases up high where a busy recruiter can see them.

"It's like buzzword bingo," he said.

This is often important when recruiters are trying to fill technical roles. They might not have a lot of background in the particulars of a job, so they might be on the hunt for phrases or words that a hiring manager has flagged.

Setting your résumé up with the F-method can mean a break from traditional formats, such as listing your work experience in reverse chronological order, which may surprise some.

But Woodrow said floating the most important ideas to the top makes sense if, for example, your most relevant experience for a job isn't tied to your latest role. Or, in other cases, he said, a job posting might call for someone with a master's degree or a Ph.D.

"Why would you put it lower down on page two or three? You'd want it on page one somewhere — highlighting it in that area which is in the 'F,'" Woodrow said.

In any case, he said, it's important to keep the most relevant information on the first page of a résumé.

Have a few goals in mind

Woodrow said one goal for your résumé should be ensuring it can be easily read by the applicant-tracking software companies often use to sift through job applications. Another aim should be having clear section titles so the document is a breeze for a recruiter to navigate. Highlight things like relevant job experience for a role you're going for, he said.

Last, Woodrow said, a résumé needs to influence a decision-maker by giving proof of your accomplishments. He recommends including three brief examples on the first page about how you solved a problem. To do this, describe a situation, give context, and use metrics from the business, if possible, to demonstrate how you improved a situation.

It's an abbreviated version of the STAR technique , sometimes used in interviewing, and involves describing a situation or task, actions, and results.

Kyle Samuels, founder and CEO of the executive search firm Creative Talent Endeavors , told BI that using the F-method to lay out a résumé can make sense for technical roles where a recruiter needs to know you have a certain amount of experience with, say, a particular programming language or modeling.

But in other cases, where a job might be more senior, artificial intelligence tools that do a first pass on a stack of résumés might make the F idea somewhat moot because AI bots can scoop up huge volumes of information.

"It kind of feels like a poor man's AI," Samuels said, referring to the F-method.

He said that with a role like a VP of marketing, you might have several candidates who would be a great fit.

"We're not expecting to see the exact same formatting or skills or experience, and so we really pore through the résumé," Samuels said.

That's why, especially when recruiting for more senior roles, there's little substitute for reading a résumé thoroughly, he said.

"I study it like the Torah," Samuels said.

With such a small amount of time to impress, it's vital to avoid the mistakes that could cost you the chance of getting your dream job.  Read on for 25 of the most common.

Given the short amount of time that a recruiter has to look over your résumé, it's a good idea to keep it succinct. Most HR professionals suggest keeping it to under two pages in order to ensure it gets a proper scan. While this might sound challenging, it's actually helpful as it allows you to make sure that every sentence counts, and is really helping to sell you to potential employers.

1. Making it too long

Similarly, having a résumé that's overly short isn't a good idea either. While a one-page résumé is often seen as being the ideal, you definitely don't want to start trimming off important bits of information in order to squeeze everything onto one page. This could mean missing out on the chance to tell your prospective employer about relevant achievements. While you might be able to impress them with this information in an interview, you have to make it to that stage first.

2. Making it too short

<p>It's a good idea to make sure that your résumé is designed in a way that reflects the type of job you're applying for. For example, if you're applying for a position in graphic design or the creative arts, it could work against you if your CV is dull and uninspiring. In contrast, if you're applying for roles in industries like finance or law, it's best to stick to a traditional layout. </p>

It's a good idea to make sure that your résumé is designed in a way that reflects the type of job you're applying for. Extravagant font options look unprofessional and make it difficult for recruiters to scan through your writing. There are some fonts that resonate particularly well. A study at Wichita State University found that people associate Times New Roman and Arial with stability, while Courier New and Georgia represented maturity.

4. Strange font choices

You want recruiters to be able to read through your résumé with ease, so using the right formatting is essential. A résumé with large blocks of text is very visually unappealing, and may result in busy employers not bothering to look through it at all. Make sure your résumé is tidy, with short paragraphs and enough spacing between them. Bullet points can also be helpful when listing things like qualifications or results.

It may also be a good idea to get someone else to read over your writing to be sure you haven't missed anything.

7. Errors and typos

While you want to keep your résumé succinct and avoid rambling on, you should always include a personal summary. This paragraph gives you the chance to really sell your skills and achievements, as well as tailoring your application to the specific job you're applying for. It can also help to give your potential new employers a little taste of your personality, and gives you the opportunity to stand out from other candidates.

Describing yourself as the "best salesperson in America" or something similar is never a good addition to your résumé. These sort of statements not only make you seem rather arrogant or lack integrity, they're also just a bit embarrassing and a sure way to convince recruiters to add you to the 'no' pile. Instead, use real examples, that can be backed up, to impress your potential employer.

14. Exaggerating your skills

When you're writing about your previous experience, the more specific you are the better. Employers want to see exactly what you've achieved in order to assess your potential. Instead of simply listing off your job responsibilities, aim to provide quantifiable results that you were solely or partly responsible for. This might include things like return on investment, number of new customers, sales figures, efficiency savings or any awards or press accolades.

15. Not mentioning specific results

If you have hobbies and interests listed in your résumé, you should ensure that they're not likely to offend or alienate potential employers. Avoid including generic interests that are plain or almost everyone has; this section is a good chance to show your personality, don't waste it! Less common, quirky interests not only show that you're a well-rounded and interesting person, they can also endear you to the recruiter if you have something in common.

16. Including the wrong interests/hobbies

All the jobs you've listed on your résumé need accurate dates, and you should avoid leaving any gaps unexplained as this is an immediate red flag for recruiters. It can signal that you're unreliable or are easily bored. Whether you took time out for traveling, illness, maternity leave, a gap year, or just for some time to yourself, make sure you explain this clearly and honestly. If you were to make it to interview stage, it's very likely that the employer would ask you about it anyway.

17. Not filling in gaps

While you don't want to include a whole load of irrelevant information in your résumé, you also want to make sure you don't leave out anything that could potentially help with your application. Many people think it's not a good idea to add the jobs they had while at university, for example. However these types of jobs are often great for gaining soft skills such as teamwork and empathy, and a study by Wonderlic revealed that 93% of recruiters consider soft skills "essential" or "very important".

18. Leaving off helpful information

Bear in mind that the person who gives your resume its initial read through may not necessarily have knowledge in your specific job area, or be familiar with complicated industry terms. Therefore, you should try to make sure that you avoid using too much technical jargon. When listing your previous work experience it may also be helpful to explain who each company is. They may be well known to your contemporaries, but a recruiter might not know why working for them is impressive.

Your potential employers are unlikely to care that your email address is super-original or funny; they'll be more interested in seeing that you understand the importance of professionalism.

When the time comes to send your résumé, be sure to use a polished and positive file name. Your potential employer will be able to see the file name in the attachments, so if it's something like 'CV_first_draft' or 'cv-template', it can have a negative impact on their overall impression of you. Show that you're detail-orientated enough to have given the file a suitable and professional-looking name.

Some recruitment experts advise including your social media links as a way to add another layer of depth to your application, providing more transparency in allowing potential employers to get to know you. However, if you do choose to add these links, make sure there's nothing that portrays you in a bad light. Take the time to go through your pages and ensure there's nothing incriminating or embarrassing, and if need be change your privacy settings.

23. Not being cautious with social media

eye-catching resume is no easy feat — especially when recruiters find a resume worth their attention one day, and the next, toss that same resume aside. 

Kickresume found that there was only a 40% chance recruiters would choose that candidate again, even after previously deeming them a good fit for a job post. Using a metric called Cohen's Kappa, which measures the level of agreement between respondents' answers on a scale from zero to one (zero being random and one being total agreement), Kickresume pinpointed just how consistent recruiters were with themselves. Respondents scored a 0.49.

"This basically means they were halfway towards randomness," says Peter Duris, co-founder and CEO of Kickresume. "This just goes to show how unpredictable the process can be." 

'Trying to stay human': A look into what it takes to land a job

Notably, when Kickresume tried the same experiment with an AI job matching tool, the tech scored 0.45, just under the human recruiters' scores. This doesn't necessarily mean employers should rush to replace recruiters, but it does underline the utility of using AI to assess potential candidates, at least in the initial resume round, says Duris. 

Since both tech and humans failed to be perfectly consistent, that does leave challenges for employers and job seekers alike. On the one hand, to get the best candidates, organizations need recruiters on the same page. That means the job qualifications for every unfilled role need to be clear and realistic — a recruiter should be able to pinpoint what factors made them throw a resume into the "yes" pile, notes Duris. He adds that recruiters should not look at too many resumes at once, if possible, since it becomes increasingly hard to stay engaged. While that wouldn't eliminate inconsistency entirely from the selection process, it would likely help.

Ready to recruit better? Here's what job seekers want

As for job seekers, Duris advises them to let go of the idea of crafting the "perfect" resume. 

"This study clearly shows that perfection is very subjective for [recruiters] anyway," he says. "There's a huge chance you won't get the job even if you're perfect."

Recruiters tell all: Red flags, resumes and the 6-second rule

Duris encourages job seekers to instead focus on sending out a certain amount of job applications each week, putting just enough energy into ensuring the application fits the job post and is free of copy errors. He also stresses the importance of engaging one's network and reaching out to recruiters so there's a higher chance of someone actually looking at their resume.

"Don't rely on the perfect resume and network to get a job that you love," says Duris. "At the end of the day, it's about putting your best foot forward."

This popular resume advice is ‘a waste of time', says former head of talent acquisition at Nike

When you're applying for a job, many career experts will tell you to tailor your resume to the job description. They recommend sifting through its requirements to see what's most relevant for the role and tweaking your resume accordingly.

Longtime HR executive James Hudson , who's led talent acquisition at companies like Nike and Levi Strauss & Co., disagrees with this approach. "It's bad advice to customize your resume" for every role, he says. In fact, as far as a jobseeker is concerned, it's "a waste of time."

Here's why he thinks so.

Descriptions are often 'managed by the compensation team'

There can be a slight disconnect between what a job description asks for and what a hiring manager might be looking for in any given role. That gap stems from how an organization creates its job descriptions.

Internally and especially in large companies, "job descriptions are typically owned and managed by the compensation team because they're directly linked to pay bands within the organization," says Hudson. A pay band is an internal salary range for each role. That means the person writing the job description will not necessarily be the person doing the hiring, and therefore may not know exactly what a hiring manager or recruiter is looking for on the ground.

"The basic qualifications are always going to be exactly right," says Hudson, such as degree and experience requirements, "but there's so much more in a job description than the basic qualifications."

You'll have a chance to better suss those out during the interview process and if you speak to someone at the company before you apply. But the job description itself might not give a 100% sense of where the emphasis will be on day-to-day job duties.

'You just have to hope' you're a fit

That's why Hudson advocates for having just one stellar resume that tells your career story. "The most powerful thing your resume can be is encapsulating your authentic and unique career journey," says Huduson.

Any experience that happened more than 10 years ago, summarize it with the company, job title and date. Anything that happened in the last 10 years, "think about four-to-six bullet points per role," he says. "And then of those four-to-six bullet points per role, think about a 50/50 split between responsibilities and result."

Responsibilities are the daily activities you took on, like managing a team of five, for example. Results are examples of your positive impact. He recommends using the following formula to write them: "Accomplished X as measured by Y by doing Z."

Beyond that, "you just have to hope that the things that you've done and the skills that you have are what the employer is looking for," says Hudson. No need to edit your resume every time.
