People put a lot of time and effort into writing the perfect digital marketing CV when applying for a job, but often the cover letter gets second billing or is just an afterthought. But that's a big mistake.

According to Resume Lab research , 83 percent of HR pros say cover letters are important in their hiring decisions while 83 percent said that a great cover letter can secure an interview even if your resume isn’t good enough.  

Imagine you're a busy recruiter or an HR executive and you have a pile of applications to go through. You look in your inbox and there's another impersonal cover letter – unresearched and uninspired. It’s a giant no. And so is the candidate.

Don't be the person that ends up in the 'No' pile. Find out 5 effective tips on how to create a digital marketing cover letter that will be read, remembered and recommended.

Why should you write a great cover letter?

There's a lot of competition out there in the job market and while digital marketers are in demand , so are jobs with good pay, great benefits, and promotional opportunities. So, it's worth taking the time to craft a cover letter that shows you understand the role, know about the company, have the right experience, and possess the ambition to make it yours.

  • Use keywords:  Look for keywords in the job description—words that emphasize the skills or qualities needed for the job. Include some of these keywords in your cover letter.

Match Your Qualifications to the Job

The first step to take before you actually put pen to paper to write your cover letter is to take a highlighter to the job announcement. Mark the most important skills or qualifications it requires (these are typically placed under subheadings such as “Job Requirements,” “Required Qualifications,” or “Preferred Qualifications”). 

Next, try to pepper your cover letter as well as your resume with these keyword phrases. Applications are ranked according to the positioning of significant keywords and the number of times they are used. If your cover letter and resume do not contain these keywords, they may never reach the human eye of a hiring manager.
