Book review: The 3 mistakes of my life – Chetan Bhagat

I just finished reading “The three mistakes of my life.” The only regret I have is why didn’t I read it earlier. When I started off reading it, I got mixed reactions; some said it’s good; some said it’s bad, so I decided to dig into it and find it for myself.

I was reluctant to continue a few pages through the book as I felt I would have a sad feeling at the end of this book. But I continued, and I was glad I did; it was so engrossing that I flipped page after page till the end. And yes, it has a happy ending :-). So the verdict is it’s the best among all the three that Chetan Bhagat has written.

The book has fiction (if you thought it’s about Chetan’s life, you are wrong:-)), sentiment, romance, social message, business, life, relations, religion, and of course, Cricket. The unique thing I found in this book is that Chetan has addressed a sensitive issue in the most sensible way possible. He has presented the facts, neutrally narrated a story.

It’s a story about three friends Omi, Govind, and Ish. The story is presented through Govind’s eyes, and it’s his three mistakes(???) of life presented along. Govind is a true Gujarati, interested in coming up on his own in life, through business.

Ish is an avid cricket player whose passion lies in playing, teaching, and watching cricket. Omi is a priest’s son who doesn’t have any ambition and moves along with his two friends. These simple people’s journey in life, how their lives get affected by the worst disasters in Gujarat’s history is portrayed in a simple yet efficient way by Chetan.

This book also teaches you how your dreams crash into pieces by unexpected events but how with support from people around you, you get back on track, focus, and rebuild your dreams.

This novel especially comes when people only want to come up with excuses to show or feel how different they are rather than see the common aspects and bring oneness, which can keep us together and achieve our common goal of growth, peace, and prosperity.

The language is simple; it connects well with India’s youth , the narration has improved; all in all, Chetan has improved in all the departments of writing a book. He has again proved that to be the best novelist, you don’t need fabulous vocabulary, or you don’t need awesome critics review; all you need is a thread to connect to people’s plain minds. Truly his best book ever.

Finally, Chetan ends the book with a message like “ One night @ call center, ” which goes out to everyone in this country.

Life will have many setbacks. People close to you will hurt you. But you don’t break it off. You don’t hurt them more. You try to heal it. It is a lesson not only for you, but our country needs to learn. Chetan Bhagat

It does make you think about certain aspects, and the feeling lingers with you for a long time. That is what you would remember after many long years that you have read the book, and of course, guys would remember the Cricket and the girl :) (A typical character found in his last two novels).

• Someone from Gujarat or Ahmedabad can relate a lot to the slang, attitude, and places described.
• You like masala, drama with a tint of reality.
• You are NOT an English language freak and are looking for a simple, engrossing, time-killing novel.

It begins well, it’s setting is wonderfully created and importantly, it truly attempts to give the reader a slice of small-town India.Again this is for teenagers, not for a mature reader group, have read this when i was in my collage that time i liked it.

About the Author:

Chetan Bhagat  is one of the most famous personalities in India. By profession, he is an Indian writer, journalist, and screenwriter known prominently for his English-language books, usually about the lives of young urban working-class Indians.

The 260-page novel combines cricket, companionship, religion, business, love, and betrayal. Like the different books of Chetan Bhagat, Smash Hit Up Yas was also made into a film. Gati Kai Po Che was well received in India and coordinated by Abhishek Kapoor.

Chetan Bhagat’s books are international best-sellers. The book begins with a passionate bend, where Bhagat is abusing messages sent by some youthful Govind, who has taken rest pills for unknown reasons and is in contact with Bhagat while waiting to die. The novel revolves around three significant relationships that Govind has had in his life; similarly, he is the main character.

Govind dreams of turning into a compelling specialist, while his accomplice Ishaan respects cricket and, with the assistance of Omi and his pastor gatekeepers, designs his initial wander—a games shop in a rented space outside the sanctum sanctorum.

Typically revolving around these three young associates, the novel contains nearly everything related to adolescents in India; the book addresses a wide range of feelings and essential thoughts in India, extending from sentimental narrating to check and antipathy for death, suicide, and suicide. Concentrating on People’s Youth Festivals, A Blend of My Lives is a novel; for example, his past work is packed with an enthusiastic craving for new experiences that keeps a piece of news standing out of the book until the end.

The first character is Ishan, whose room was cut short because he lived in a country with little value for sports. He got into the army, lied that he had an ailing parent, came back, and never went back.

So he’s a military dropout for me; his father is a priest, and he has lived in the temple all his life. Some people say he was born stupid, and other people say that he became stupid when a cricket ball hit him when he was in the classics, but he doesn’t talk much about his future.

Govind is a math guru whose father abandoned him and his mother as a child. His mother became a shambles after she finally decided to start a business after he noticed they were going broke, and all her jewelry was sold to other adults. He went to college to study engineering but didn’t like it, so he now tells people to study math to support his family.

Ali is a little Muslim boy who is gifted in cricket and marble. Having developed a love and sense of business, he decided to involve his two best friends, who became partners. They started a cricket shop. Umi was supposed to ask his uncle to give them a shop in the temple. Ish was supposed to give cricket tutors to two children who wanted it because it was like a loved spot in India.

So it was God who was telling the story. His first mistake was when he and his partners or friends decided to take a loan from Omi’s uncle and his mom to buy a bigger shop at the mall. He was always irritated whenever Umi’s uncle came to the shop and would talk about religious stuff because he was an agnostic; he was in the middle.

Because he’s someone who always knows, who always does research, i.e., buying a house with a sand foundation is something he should have known about or researched, so that was his second mistake, along with falling in love and having a sexual relationship with Ishi’s sister, who was also one of his students.

He was too strong because there is an unspoken rule among the guys that they don’t hit on their friend’s sister, and he’s a very logical person; he’s not someone who has on sentiment, so that was his second mistake. So, guys, the book mentioned something about the chimpanzees, the chimps, or the MailChimp who fight in this empire. They will fight each other, for women, for food, for everything, and at the end of the day, they will go through the same ritual of kissing each other on the leaves. This ritual was done to ensure that everything at the end of the day was reserved, which was a reconciliatory mechanism.

I also read the book. I still find it is not up to "Five Point Someone". The entire Australian episode described in the book is a bad idea. The story line had some many loose ends like you mentioned. I wrote a post abt this book in my blog too. Chk it!

hi srinidhi, nice comprehensive analysis. you have got many of the glitches but in the process you have revealed too many parts of the plot. Regarding NDTV channel argument .. ur argument is partially right. As my memory runs the riots were shown in Star-News(the news segment was produced by NDTV). They weren't a independent channel at that time. Btw I am awaiting for ur post abt "assault weapon".

@Shande I have given an overview of the storyline. A blog post can never be a substitute for reading the book. These three mistakes weren't a serious mistakes as such so thought of destroying the hype and set the expectations clear for a reader. Hi Nidhi, Ya, the mistakes you pointed out were correct. But Chetan's novels are akin to Hindi movies, most of the times, no logic. These kind of mistakes can be found out in 5 Point Some one too. I felt book was not upto the hype created, especially the title, 3 mistakes. Some guys felt after reading the prologue in his site that it is not a fiction but his life story! My most interesting lines from the book- Page 86-Vidya and Govind go to market to buy guidebooks for former’s exam “What is this?-Vidya said as she tried to lift the book with her left hand. She couldn’t. She used both her hands and finally took it six inches off the ground. ‘No seriously, what is this? An assault weapon?” -I will discuss this topic in little more detail in a separate post soon. i really wish dat u do give it as soon as possible coz i really need dis.....plz post d explanation or d discussion why u liked this topic asap..... thanks.....

mistake- page 216-ali wore yellow tshirt and old pair of jeans. page 242-his thin body in white kurta pajama. thet didn't go to ali's home in between,then where did ali change his dress..:p

Good book. One must read who loves our country. It gives the definite inside view of what is really going on in our country. We all know the symptoms, and sometimes get frustrated with no cure of it, but It talks about the Cure as well. It may not be inspirational or Fun like Bhagat's earlier ones, but definitely it is an Honest book which expresses the most of the Youth's view, who understands a bit. It may let down to those who doesn't want to face the reality or who wants to be in their world, but those are having a concern, and going through the what is going on in our country for past few years and see through the pathetic condition of the country, will definitely relate to it.

I just finised reading this book. my first ever indian literature I ever read. it's amazing, fun, and entertaining but I'm having problems with the translation, though it's just small grammar lapses. let's talk about ali and his cricket stuff. why all of a sudden ali wanted to play cricket? my understanding is he was forced and bribed. Is abba pushed ali to go on training to have some sort of free tuitions? though abba promised to pay if his budget permits... after the autralian trip, no one has a guts to tell ish to endorse ali to the indian team? though it was stated in the book that team india is not good in terms of training their mates. and so? is ish more good than the team india trainers? i guess, ish depends TOO MUCH on ali's talent. for govind. a business minded person that thinks how he will become rich somehow pursuaded to support ish's obssession towards ali's talent. a lot of money were wasted supporting ali. what was govind thinking? that someday ali will be famous in his field and earn tons of tons of money? i know they're friends but this is business, almost everything went to ali. but overall, it's a good book. i enjoyed reading it =)

the only chetan bhagat title that was a little sensible. glad to have started reading him from here and hence picked up his second book. the fictional god controlling everything was enteratining but simultaneously seemed so foolish

now what can i say about chetan who is world renowned for his novels but this one is worth to be in your collection....not as great as 2 states yet it had touch of everything in it.....it's not too interesting yet not so boring as well....

Hy Nidhi, Your review was excellent.I have read every single one of Chetan Bhagat's books and have found most of them to be utter rubbish.His first book Five Point Someone,based on real life events have been a bit thought provoking but very boring.The second book One Night At The Call Centre was no better.It was an imaginary tale and I can confidently say One Night At The Call Centre is an imaginary story having ZERO logic.The Three Mistakes Of My Life better than his previous two books.Although it did not make sense most of the time,the story was capturing.I didn't find it boring like the other two.2 States was a story based on his life and was the only book that was interesting as well as logical.It showed some realities that happen in the Indian Marriage System even in highly educated families.The prejudices that take place in the Indian society is clearly depicted in the book.Revolution 2020 is a book which would appeal largely to people who are interested in politics.It shows the corrupt political system in India behind the veil of democracy.Although i like the book largely for the political content in it(as i m interested in politics)the book was not liked by most of my friends as it had something very illusional.Half Girlfriend was like One Night At The Call Centre and cannot be considered as a good read.The recent book One Indian Girl can be a handbook for feminists as it shows how the society showcases a girl while having no regard for a boy. This far I have felt that most of Chetan Bhagat's books are not enjoyable. Thank You

Hi!!! I am pranab mukherjee i have also finished the three mistakes of life.I very much agree with you really the last part of the story is turned around to be more commercial i.e. like more of a hindi film story. especially the ending.Any how can't tell a must read but can be tried once. Thanks

i did not like the book at all...i think the whole book is commercial, not just the last part...it lacks in research of any kind...om's character is not developed at all, so one feels no sorrow when he dies...it is also rather obvious that bhagat does not watch cricket

My first and the best ever read novel

The story iz complicated fr those people who hv never been in habit of reading such beautiful emotional buks.............i liked d story very very much............even waiting fr d movie based on it..........kai po che!!!!!!!!!!

Even kai po che is the same. but the one who has read the book and remembers the story, then only he'll understand the movie, because, the movie is made in a "shortcut" way. The screen adaptation is done cleverly. Story runs fast and no specific background for a particular character or situation. and about the last part, i haven't read the book fully (only reached half the pages) but yeah the one youngster ISHAAN, who dies in the end, its very bad. and sad too ! that should have been ignored. Overall book is good.! A worth reading !

Hmmm When one wonders why such cliches in Hindi movies sells, books in similar lines, to script more movies, surely is bound to hit big !!! After all they unfortunately cater the spicy tastes of a good majority for certain . . Its just the ones with a sour tongue that have to be contend with the least in the contents . . But that said, Kai Po Che certainly is a lil relief from the usual !@#$%^&* that hits the screens week in week out . . With the Oscars over, trend tends to peep into the English territory only to wonder what hit them i guess, such sweet spot in taste isn't really that well defined in this majority . . But can't help wonder the difference in class and standard of the same, which surely will be understood by those who have long been tasting such great servings !!! THat brings such few ones to ponder if ever Hindi movies will grow up, especially when even the ones they send for the Oscar entry itself describes shamelessness !!!! Not to mention the unfair treatment to many a brilliant regional movie in Bengali, Marathi, Malayalam which could at least stand in the list of the class of foreign ones . . Agree with your review on the book, though only browsed through it :P Yes, I'm not that much of a fiction reader nowadays too :) Anyways Thanks . .

The review is very apt. I haven't read the book but just saw the movie. It just get unnecessarily heady towards the end. My sole question is - what are the THREE MISTAKES if to be defined clearly?

1. Buying the shop in the mall which they knew they could not afford. 2. Sleeping with Vidya 3. The third one wasn't shown in the movie. Its related to Ali.. Read the book for that one :P

TO PEOPLE WHO SAID THAT THIS BOOK, "THREE MISTAKES OF MY LIFE" IS DISAPPOINTING, Dearies it seems that you people are rather too practical with giving no way for emotions or your life is heading towards no where or you far too advanced for CB's writing maybe!!(God knows what).... It turns out that this novel has impressed me .... coz I've seen it deeper than outer line given. Omi's death would only touch if you had bonding friends in reality and if you would have empathised him. well, Ishaan is like WOW!!(EXCEPT in not accepting Govind and Vidya) The patriotic blast in his blood and passionate about cricket!! For people should learn from him what patriotism and passion of life is!! the protaganist seems not to stay in my mind same goes with Vidhya and the religious freaks living in there.. But ALI , hats off to him.. the young,innocent, talented kid who scores the love of my heart far more than anything in this book!

You should have a balanced sense of emotion & practicality when you are doing criticis of novels or any kind of arts. But really what you are doing here? You are so desperate to compare the novel with bolly movies that you find several passionate lines cheesy & even saying that saving a boy's life is not meaningful to you. What are you made of dear? Even the beasts have minimum of hearts. It was not only for his gift, the gift words were for excuses to save him, but they mentioned quite a few times that they care, especially Ishan, Govind too at the end. Besides this, if anyone is partriotic that is drama to you, protocol line about best friend's sister is cheesy for you, seriously where are you from? Even if you are from some high societies, don't you know minimum of small town things? And here you are with your critics, with all these horrible senses? And not only these books characters, but many did suffer directly from both the earthquake & riots in Gujarat, so stop giving such dumb peculiar conclusions by saying that it's not realistic. Not that I'm saying this is the best book, but enough likable, there are realities ( not for half-sensed or half-knowledged ones) & passions which is not present in everyone who never think out of the box, as a result they find it unrealistic, for example, like going to Australia. One can surely find faults while doing critics, but here every negative point stated is so bizarre. The foolest criticism I have ever read, & shocked to see several foxes as well in the comment section(one started wooouuuu, then the rest are joining too - wooouuuu wouuuuuu), for people with such kind of mindsets India is still lagging so much behind in several professional aspects.

It was a solid book, way better than the movie adaptation. I wish there was a big more character development with the main character, but besides by that the book was very good from the plot to the small details in the characters personalities. It isn't perfect but i don't think any book is perfect. Its basically the term "popcorn movie", but for a book.

About the Author

Chetan Bhagat is an Indian author and columnist. He was also included in Time magazine's list of World's 100 Most Influential People in the year 2010. Bhagat originally graduated in mechanical engineering at IIT Delhi and completed an MBA at IIM Ahmedabad. Initially, he started his career as an investment banker but left it after a few years in order to pursue his passion for writing. 

‘Five Point Someone’, his first novel, was published in 2004. He has written nine novels and three non-fiction books till date. His novels have always been listed as bestsellers since the beginning.

About the Book

‘The 3 mistakes of my Life’ is the third bestseller novel by Chetan Bhagat. It was published in May 2008 and gathered an initial print-run of 4,20,000. The story follows the life of three friends of Ahmedabad. 

The main story line is that in late-2000 in Ahmedabad, a young boy Govind dreams of having a business. To accommodate his friends Ish and Omi’s passion, eventually they open a cricket shop. Govind wants to make money and so, always thinks big. Ish’s life is all about to nurture Ali, who is a batsman with a rare gift. Omi among them, is completely different. He knows his limited capabilities and he just wants to be around his friends. 

But, nothing comes easy in a turbulent rush city. To realize their life goals, the three of them will have to face it all– religious politics, earthquakes, riots, unacceptable love  and above all,  their own mistakes in existence. The book covers their struggles of how they make it or even not. 

It is a story of a young Indian generation in this modern world who counters unpredictable love, thwarted ambitions, absence of family affection, pressure of a patriarchal set up and the work environment around a universalized office.

It also forces readers to question if an individual’s dreams could overcome the nightmares which are offered by real life and also, could we succeed even despite a few mistakes in the process. The book is based on real events, real circumstances and stories. While we all find Bhagat’s books as a common fun romance based, this book comes out as a dark, yet witty tale of modern India with a lot of enlightening issues and learning aspects.

The book has also been adapted into a Bollywood movie, Kai Po Che, and was directed by Abhishek Kapoor. The movie starred Sushant Singh Rajput, Amit Sadh & Rajkumar Rao. It was released in February 2013. Since the film and book were set in Gujarati, hence justifying its title, Kai Po Che.

The 3 mistakes of my life by Chetan Bhagat (Introduction)

Before starting “The 3 Mistakes of My Life Summary you should know about the writer of this book. The Book 3 Mistakes of My Life was written by Chetan Bhagat in the year 2008. Chetan Bhagat was born on 22 April 1974 in Delhi. He was the great author and writer of his era.

His mother worked for the government’s agriculture department, while his father served as a lieutenant colonel in the Indian Army. Chetan Bhagat received his technical education at IIT Delhi before completing his MBA at IIM Ahmadabad. Then he was married to Anusha, a classmate. He moved his family to Canada after that.

He worked in a bank since he didn’t want to write books. After some time, in 2004, he published his debut book, “Five Point Someone.” And it went on to become a bestseller.

Eight bestsellers were written by him: Half girlfriend (2014), One Indian girl (2016), the girl in the room, the 3 mistakes of my life (2008), and the 3 points someone (2004).  And of these eight books, five have been successfully adapted into movies. He is a motivational speaker and screenwriter who also contributed to Salman Khan’s blockbuster film Kick. Sushant Singh Rajput plays a vital role to make a movie on the book “the 3 mistakes of my life.”

The 3 mistakes of my life Book Summary

This story is based on 3 friends living in Ahmedabad in western India. At the initial level, the story was published in the Gujarati language after seeing the book going out of stock publishers start selling the same book in different languages. 

Main Character of the story

GOVIND: He is the story’s narrator. He has a strong sense of business. He wanted to become an entrepreneur.

ISHAAN: He is a cricketer.

OMI: He is a guy, who has no plans for his future and engaged all time thinking about career.

ALI: He is the best cricketer and student of the Ishaan.

GEETA: He is a sister of Ishan. And Govind fall in love with her.

1. FIRST MISTAKE

Fall in Love with Friend Circle: Govind falls in love with Ishaan’s sister. Govind met Ishaan’s sister in such a way that life changed. Ishaan loves her sister a lot. His sister is named Vidya. Ishaan asked Govind to teach Vidya mathematics for her entrance exam. During the preparation for exams, Vidya is attracted by Govind and confesses her love.

Govind wanted to accept her proposal but he was confused about friendships. Govind rejected Vidya’s proposal and start leaving her alone. When he lived far from Vidya he realized his love. Then he also confesses to Vidya.

Destiny does not want their relationship to grow. They both separated due to some reasons. A few months later the match begin between India and Australia in Goa.

In the cricket match both meet each other and Govind realizes his mistake which he did a few months later. But Vidya forgets everything and they restart their journey together.

2. SECOND MISTAKE

Investing all money in single project: The   three friends started shopping mall to grow their business and financial condition. But their biggest mistake is that they invested all their assets in a single project. They should keep some amount of reserve as assets or capital for future loss recovery. Unfortunately, they did not do so.

Due to the earthquake, the shopping mall was destroyed totally. Huge economic fluctuation becomes the reason for the separation of three friends. In some of the places, Govind showed his selfishness in business. He only wanted to reach the business top of the sky with any condition and any cost just because of his attitude he lost all his friends.

 (Never invest your and your known one money in single project keep some reserve for future uncertainty) 

3. THIRD MISTAKE

Don’t Be Too Much Selfish which Cause Human Life: This is the story of when three friends suffering from  Hindu-Muslim Riots . When Omi’s uncle lost a son in a clash between Hindus and Muslims. Omi’s uncle becomes enraged and decides to burn the Muslims as a result both mother and father of Ali’s were dead. 

But in a building, Ishaan, Govind, and Omi conceal Ali. Omi’s uncle and his companion managed to enter the building, and he told Ali to exit because he was Muslim. Though Ishaan declines. Omi died trying to save Ali. Omi’s uncle was horrified to see Omi perishing in front of him. He then plunges a knife in Ali’s direction.

Govind considers saving Ali but understands he might also pass away. Govind turns egotistical. A short while later, he makes the decision to save Ali, but it was too late. A knife hurled by Omi’s uncle causes Ali to have a wrist injury. 

Omi’s uncle also passes away during the fight. Ali’s hand was inoperative. Ishaan then begins to ignore Govind, which is why the stores only receive half. Ishaan Cricket Store occupies one side, and Govind’s Stationery occupies the other.

(This was the third mistake of Govind’s life. “If he hadn’t been selfish, he could have saved Ali without hurting him.”)

4. Happy Ending

Ali needs to raise 5 lakh rupees for his wrist surgery. Ishaan adamantly rejects Govind’s offer of money. But Govind and Vidya eventually visited Ishaan and apologized for their error.

Govind is pardoned by Ishaan, and they eventually cross paths. After Ali’s wrist heals, he resumes playing cricket as before. Govind and Vidya lives together after solving all misunderstandings.

While reading 3 Mistakes of My Life Book I like most the moral of story that teach us “never be too much greedy or selfish which cause human life.”

The 3 Mistakes of My Life by Chetan Bhagat is the source for the film Kai Po Che. The friendship spirit is honored in this novel. This book centers around three buddies, Ishan, Omi, and Govind.

The Director Abhishek Kapoor turned The 3 Mistakes of My Life into a Bollywood film, which he titled “Kai Po Che” and debuted in theatres in 2013. This movie inspires many people. With the late Sushant Singh Rajput, RajKumar Rao, and Amit Sadh playing the key roles, it was a faithful translation of the book.

In comparison to the book, the movie earned a lot of praise and excellent reviews. I chose the book because of the movie, and it was one of the best reads at that time. ‘Kai Po Che’ presents unique and perspective ideas on friendship when compared to other Bollywood films on the subject.

This book or novel gives me great friendship vibes. The three mistakes of my life by Chetan Bhagat is a must-read book that you would love to have on your book collection if you enjoy reading books with themes of friendship, sports, and life.

• Leave whatever happened in past just focus on present to make future perfect.
• Don’t try to invest your money on single project or goal only. Just invest 60 to 70% instead of 100%. May be your investment would not give you result so it’s better at initial level invest less than if you notice the improvement then invest more otherwise change your strategy and method of business.
• Don’t be too selfish for your ambitions which harm your relation and friendship. Thinking about career and goals is good but achieving target without hurting someone is superior skill of individual who wanted to leave peaceful life.

Nell Irvin Painter’s understanding of America is beautiful and bracing. We should listen.

“I Just Keep Talking” brings together wide-ranging and pointed essays by the author of “The History of White People.”

From the opening sentences of her new collection, “ I Just Keep Talking: A Life in Essays ,” historian Nell Irvin Painter addresses readers in a voice brimming with knowledge, clarity and, most delightfully, confidence. As she writes, it would have been a terrible thing had she died young, “during the full-blown era of White-male-default segregation, discrimination, and disappearance that wound down only yesterday. I would have disappeared from memory, just another forgotten Black woman scholar, invisible to history and to histography.” And poor readers would have been deprived of her droll wit and self-assured wisdom.

It’s no small thing that in an era filled with grievances based on injuries that are sometimes profound and often perceived, Painter makes it clear that she has not come to this memoir to reclaim a lost or damaged part of herself. She recounts her response to an admirer who once inquired about what she did for healing. “‘Nothing,’ I said. ‘I’m not broken.’ Not broken, but on occasion frustrated, indignant — self-righteously — pissed off with cause, often exhausted, but mostly and permanently grateful for the people who have protected me, mentored me, supported me over so many decades.” This is an invigorating introduction, full of certainty and strength. Painter has moved through her professional life always knowing her worth, never doubting her intelligence and believing that those who might refuse to listen to her insight would be lesser for their decision.

Perhaps it requires a historian to fully grasp the importance — or at least the impact — of telling one’s own story with a certain brio. Painter, 81, is an esteemed historian retired from Princeton University who studied painting later in life, including at the Rhode Island School of Design. (She wrote about that experience in an earlier memoir, “ Old in Art School .”) The essays in “I Just Keep Talking,” which reflect upon the meaning of “Whiteness,” our understanding of enslavement and the power of nuance, among other subjects, are accompanied by her artwork, which sometimes amplifies her words and sometimes stands in their stead. It is a beautiful book. But its power ultimately rests in the sentences, not the pictures.

In some cases, Painter turns her attention to long-ago history, such as the legacy of Sojourner Truth. She informs readers that the 19th-century abolitionist and women’s rights activist did not utter the most famous phrase attributed to her: “Ain’t I a woman?” If Truth had, in fact, asked the question, Painter says, society’s answer would have been “no.” The answer not only would have reflected the circumstances of the times but would have undercut the way in which Truth understood her power and the skill with which she used it.

The Truth sketched by Painter, in an essay from 1994, is more complex than the one who has been reduced to a misattributed slogan. Truth eschewed the trappings of intellectualism and freedom as used by orator Frederick Douglass, and built her “public persona to establish that what had happened to her — her enslavement, rather than her reason — lent her a unique wisdom.”

Painter’s assessment of Truth is searing, sad and deeply revealing to a lay reader. Truth understood a reality of her time, which is that “in the eyes of most nineteenth-century Americans to be both memorable and woman at the same time simply was not possible. Black women’s individual experience had either to be reconstructed as something emblematically Negro — that is, as enslaved — or to be erased.”

As always, understanding our history means understanding ourselves. We carry our history with us: what we’ve learned in textbooks, what has been burnished in familial oral histories and what has been prettied up by politicians. Painter reminds us of history’s complications and subtleties. She encourages civilians — not just activists or academics — to ask all the pertinent questions, even the uncomfortable ones or those that are contrary to our individual politics and preferences.

What did slavery do to those who were in bondage? But also, what did it do to those who enforced it? Painter is insistent in her refusal to cave to the “national hunger for simplifying history.” She is a dogged corrector of the public record. She has even included in this book a letter to the editor she had published in the New Yorker in 2022, in which she carefully disentangles Truth from the famous slogan.

Painter does not limit her sharp critiques to distant ancestors and abolished institutions; she considers still-vibrant personalities and more recent upheavals. She takes us back to the Supreme Court confirmation hearings of Clarence Thomas in 1991, during which Anita Hill, in the pre-#MeToo era, testified to Thomas’s sexual harassment of her. Painter highlights the way in which Thomas forced Hill into the role of spoiler of circumstances that were not yet a fait accompli.

“In a struggle between himself and a woman of his same race, Thomas executed a deft strategy,” Painter writes. “He erected a tableau of White-Black racism that allowed him to occupy the position of the race . By reintroducing concepts of White power, Thomas made himself into the Black person in his story. Then, in the first move of a two-step strategy, he cast Anita Hill into the role of Black woman as traitor to the race .”

Painter continues: “The most common formula expressing minority status is ‘women and Blacks.’ As the emblematic woman is White and the emblematic Black is male, Black women generally are not as easy to comprehend symbolically.”

The racial and gender dynamics that were evident during that 20th-century Shakespearean drama continue to resonate in this century. Black music mogul Sean Combs faces accusations of harassment and violence by women over whom he wielded power. Thomas remains a controversial figure, facing scrutiny over his ethics on the bench and questions about potential conflicts of interest . And Hill has become a revered standard-bearer of a new generation of women who have spoken their truth under daunting circumstances, including Christine Blasey Ford during the 2018 confirmation hearings of Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh.

History simply refuses to remain in the past.

Painter is also the author of “The History of White People” (2010), an exploration of how and why certain individuals were sorted into that racial category. Its sweeping audacity left some observers bemused, not by what it said about our construction of race but by the skin color of the woman who wrote it. Painter has swagger. And in this memoir, she takes advantage of all the privileges of a historian to take an arm’s-distance look at a people, not just those who look like her . She explains Whiteness and how the concept politically evolved during the presidency of Donald Trump .

Whiteness had always been the default, the standard against which all others were measured. Social and political acceptability were based on how closely one hewed to the White ideal. To claim Whiteness as an identity, however, was problematic, because those who did so were white nationalists and supremacists. They were members of the Ku Klux Klan. White pride was a political hand grenade.

“What the time of Trump does for us now is make White Americans visible as raced Americans, as raced counterparts to Black Americans. Long-standing assumptions — that only non-Whites have racial identities, that White Americans are individuals who only have race if they’re Nazis or White nationalists — those assumptions no longer hold,” Painter writes in an essay from 2018. “I’m turning the glass around to focus on what living in a slave society did to non-Black Americans and to the society as a whole.”

Painter puts muscle and heart into history so that her readers can easily, but thoughtfully, draw the lines between past and present. Her history is inclusive, not in a pandering or self-consciously correct way, but because her artful telling of it is full of complexity that’s both beautiful and bracing.

“Once we can write the words ‘trauma’ and ‘slavery’ in the same sentence, we will have enriched our understanding of slavery’s human costs, for enslaved, enslavers, and bystanders,” she writes.

In her memoir, Painter offers an intellectual history of herself, but also a history of us. We’re lucky that she continues to talk. What she has to say can help us more fully understand ourselves — but only if we’re willing to listen.

The obsession started in his brother’s apartment, when he first cracked open Danny Lyon’s book “The Bikeriders,” a New Journalism-style account of the Chicago Outlaws Motorcycle Club in the mid-1960s. He could see the movie in his mind: A story about rebels, romantics, frauds and the end of an era.

But he didn’t quite realize just how terrifying it would be to film the motorcycles in motion.

The bikes were vintage. The actors, including Austin Butler and Tom Hardy, would be riding at high speeds. And there would be no helmets. At some point, one of his stunt coordinators just came out with it: “There is no way to make this 100% safe.”

They went for it. The danger was kind of the point. And everyone made it out unscathed.

Their motorcycle expert (and amateur philosopher) said something that stuck with Butler. It is dangerous, but it can also be empowering.

“Your life is in your hands,’” Butler said. “But it’s also an incredible act of self-love. You have to look out for yourself. Nobody else can do it for you.”

“The Bikeriders” ( racing into theaters nationwide Friday ) is a rare summer gem: An original film with stars (including Jodie Comer, Michael Shannon, Norman Reedus and Mike Faist), cool cred, pathos and a clear-eyed wistfulness for a moment, and a type of guy, that was vanishing even as it was happening.

“There is all this romanticism around this subculture. It’s easy to become ‘Grease’ really quickly,” Nichols said. “This is a film that’s really about nostalgia. There is a sadness that comes with that. But there’s also a joy in remembering it.”

Catching a star on the rise

Nichols has always had luck with casting, getting movie stars in his films right as they’re about to break big. Before he made “Take Shelter,” he remembered a producer asking, “who this Jessica Chastain was.” For “The Bikeriders,” it was Butler. “ Elvis ” had yet to come out. He didn’t yet know about “ Dune: Part Two .” But when he met him, he was certain. “This guy’s a movie star, you know?” Nichols said.

“I read a lot of scripts and this one just felt different,” Butler said. “It felt full of humanity and these cinematic moments I could see in my mind’s eye. … I felt like I was being invited into this other world. And he was one of the coolest characters I’ve ever read.”

Butler’s Benny is also the most enigmatic of the bunch: A guy whose face is never shown in Lyon’s book and who is never interviewed — just talked about.

“I love how Jeff talks about him as being this empty cup that everybody wants to fill with their own expectations and their own responsibilities. He doesn’t want any of that,” Butler said. “That’s when he wants to cut loose and be free.”

And Butler brought an element to Benny that Nichols hadn’t originally envisioned. Nichols wanted Benny to be bottled up until the end and remembered telling his star to “pull it back” a few times.

“Like, stop smiling,” Nichols laughed. “When that kid smiles the whole world smiles.”

But he soon realized that was missing the point of casting someone like Butler — an emotive actor with a big heart who would go over to apologize to Hardy after a fight scene.

“At some point you have to find a balance between the character that’s on the page and the human being you have playing that part,” Nichols said. “And that character got better because of him.”

A different point of view

In his many years of thinking about how to make “The Bikeriders” work one of Nichols’ biggest breakthroughs was when he realized who the narrator should be: Kathy.

Based on a real woman, she falls for Benny at first sight and gets wrapped up in the club.

“If you ask Danny, Kathy was one of the most interesting people there. She just pops off the page,” Nichols said. “She’s witty, she’s introspective, she’s self-deprecating, she’s infuriating at times. She is a real person. And honestly, I just kind of fell in love with her.”

Comer saw in her a fascinating character, an “ordinary” but still extraordinary person: Strong willed and funny and authentic. She worked tirelessly to nail Kathy’s very specific Chicago accent, using the hours of taped interviews with Lyon as a roadmap.

“I could see so many older women who I’ve had in my life in her,” said Comer, who was raised in Liverpool. “The way in which they tell stories and have a kind of magnetism.”

But on another level, she was just a better storyteller both as an outsider with insider intimacy and for what he wanted to say.

“The ultimate truth, and a subtext of the film, is that men are really bad at sharing their emotions,” he said. “Observing this group in the hands of a male narrator I think would be really boring.”

Fact, fiction and telling a good story

“The Bikeriders” is a work of fiction. Nichols didn’t want to be the historian of the Outlaws, a group that still exists. He mostly wanted to capture this time and culture and evoke the feeling he got when he opened that book so many years ago.

But he also draws heavily on Lyon’s images, some of which are recreated, and reporting. Much of Kathy’s dialogue are things the real Kathy, who was married to Benny, said. Hardy’s character Johnny was also apparently inspired by the Marlon Brando film “The Wild One” to start the club. He was the leader and also a bit of a fraud — a suburban dad with a real job on the side.

Nichols also chose to make the film in color, instead of mimicking Lyon’s famous use of black-and-white photography.

“They’re beautiful, but they are romanticized,” Nichols said. “I think when you put them in color, they become less affected. They become more realistic.”

Getting it to the big screen

“The Bikeriders’” journey to theaters was not without its bumps. Last fall, it had a triumphant debut at the Telluride Film Festival, often a launching pad for Oscar hopefuls. But as the December release date approached, it became clear that the actors strike was not going to be over in time for the stars to help promote the film. Headlines said that The Walt Disney Co.’s Searchlight Pictures had dropped “The Bikeriders” instead of just holding it for a post-strike release.

“It got misreported,” Nichols said. “It was frustrating. It was like, you all have a fundamental misunderstanding how this film was made.”

The truth, Nichols explained, is a little more complicated and nuanced because New Regency finances their own films and distribution, often working with partners at studios to do so. After the drop-dead date came and went for the December release, another opportunity arose with Focus Features, the arthouse arm of Universal Pictures, who envisioned a splashy worldwide summer release.

The joys and pains of riding those bikes

Like Butler, Hardy came into the film with some motorcycle know-how. But neither would describe it as a leg up — antique bikes are a different beast.

“It just happens to be a convenience because I can ride as opposed to lying about skiing,” Hardy said. “But it quickly became an inconvenience. You’re busy and you’re trying to do the other job, which is the face pulling piece where you’re trying to act, and the bike is unpredictable.”

Still, once they got it down it could be rather exciting.

“It was exhilarating riding in a giant group,” Butler said. “You feel the energy of every motorcycle coming together.”

Comer said riding on the back of Benny’s bike for the first time was “a really magical kind of movie moment.

“We were on a night shoot in Cincinnati and freezing, wind in your hair,” she said. “You see the twinkle of the lights, the street lamps. You hear the roaring of the engines. I was like, Oh my God, this is exactly what she spoke of.”

And of course the danger was ever-present. But it also resulted in some real movie magic, like the near-impossible recreation of one of Lyon’s most famous photographs with a single bikerider speeding across the Ohio Bridge, looking over his shoulder.

In the film, the rider is Butler. They had shut down the bridge. The police were there. They couldn’t do it more than twice (both logistically and because they couldn’t risk anything with their star). They had a 35mm film camera mounted on a car with a crane attempting to speed alongside Butler but also definitely going at a different speed.

“All of a sudden we lock in the cameras in the right spot, the bridge is in the right spot, Austin looks back, then he drives off,” Nichols said. “And you’re like holy (expletive): ‘We got it.’”

Asus Vivobook S 15

The next generation of Windows laptops has arrived. With Qualcomm’s new ARM-based Snapdragon X Elite chip paired with Microsoft’s Copilot+PC AI tools, laptop manufacturers across the board are preparing to introduce this new combination to their customers I've spent the last week with Asus’ new Vivobook S 15 laptop to find out more.

In one sense, the latest Vivobook S 15 is pretty much as expected. The Vivobook range targets a wide range of use cases but generally acts as the all-rounder laptop; there’s a focus on thin and lightweight design, long battery life, and everyday use. The new S 15 takes all of those features and magnifies them in spectacular size.

The modifier is the processor choice and its impact on those key features.

This S 15 is one of the first “ Copilot+ PC ” laptops which use Qualcomm’s X Elite chipset (here with the X1E 78 100). This is an ARM-based chipset rather than the vastly more common x86 architecture the PC industry has used for over two decades. Just as Apple saw a significant performance and battery life increase when the Mac platform moved away from the x86 Intel chipsets to its own Apple Silicon ARM-based Mxx chipset, so will PC manufacturers.

Qualcomm has been quick to draw comparisons with the M3 that currently sits in the MacBook Air. The S 15 certainly sits in that window; while the M3 MacBook Air has the better benchmark performance, the S 15 wins out on multi-core performance. I expect to see countless edge cases online on which platform is “better," but the fact that there will be narrow wins across many comparisons is enough to say that Qualcomm’s chipset has closed the gap with Apple.

That’s clearly on show with battery life. I’ve not had enough time with the laptop to really dig into the battery life, but it is getting through each day comfortably. Starting at dawn with a full battery, I was happily working through some audio editing for podcasting, the usual daily work of writing and browsing with background music, and some baseball video streams in the evening… broadly speaking, I was looking at forty percent battery left at the end of the day.

None of this is pushing the envelope, yet this run-of-the-mill workload would normally trigger battery anxiety in me after four hours. That it comfortably reaches twelve hours is the real talking point. Pair this up with the performance specs, and you realise that this consumer-focused all-rounder offering can be comparable to the similarly targeted MacBook Air.

There is one area where Apple still leads: app support, both natively and emulated x86 macOS apps.

Thanks to the relatively closed nature of Apple’s macOS app store, it could move its developers over to ARM with relative ease, and by restring older API calls, it could ensure that the x86 apps that consumers relied on in 2020 when Apple Silicon was deployed would run comfortably under x86 emulation on macOS.

Unlike macOS, which rapidly depreciates old code, Windows has a long legacy of apps running on Windows 11. That means the ability to run x86 apps on ARM-based hardware is vital. This area has improved significantly since the Surface Pro X debuted the modern emulation layer.

Now called Prism, the design challenge is to run any x86 Windows app on ARM hardware. Broadly speaking, this has been achieved. It’s not perfect, and there will no doubt be cases where x86 apps are just too awkward to run in the current emulation version.

Many of the core apps for a Windows experience have ARM versions—notably, Google’s Chrome web browser joined the ARM-based catalogue in March 2024. Naturally, these leverage the new chipset to the best of their ability. If there’s an ARM version of an app, you should be looking at that first of all.

While the S 15 is not a gaming laptop, gaming titles require far more performance and memory than a good web browser. Throwing some intense x86-based games into the Prism emulator offers a good insight into the capabilities of the laptop to run existing demanding apps.

The results were good enough for my needs, but it’s clear that gaming will need more work. The closer you get to current AAA titles, the lower you must drop framerate and resolution. Cyberpunk 2077 struggles to go above 25fps on a low-graphic setting, and you’ll be looking for 1080p and 30fps for titles released in 2022 and 2023.

Going back further you’ll find more frames and performance can be asked. Heading back to one of my favourites, the 2016 version of Doom offers a similar experience to running on an x86-focused gaming machine. However, when first entering large cavernous areas in this first-person shooter, there are the occasional moments of lag as data loads in.

It’s never going to be as clean as running native apps, but given the wide footprint of Windows apps, the Prism emulation system delivers on the promise and the needs of consumers.

Some titles, especially online multiplayer games, will refuse to run, warning that they are not designed for ARM-based systems. Anti-cheat technologies are likely at play here, but if you have a game or app that is a deal-breaker for you, checking that it can run before purchasing the S 15 (or any of the new Copilot+ PC laptops) is vital.

The move to ARM is a significant one, which offers a new trade-off for consumers to understand, but at the end of it all, the Asus 15 is still an everyday laptop that is pushing into the premium space.

The 15.6 inch OLED display pops out and is very noticeable when watching video. Given the 16:9 ratio screen, most modern TV and films will fill the display, but for productivity, some may prefer an aspect ratio with a taller screen. I’m disappointed that the screen is not touch-sensitive. Paired with the 16:9 display, it gives the air of leaving space for leisure and work.

It’s been some time since I’ve worked on a laptop with the once ubiquitous number pad to the keyboard's right. With the trackpad offset to sit under the spacebar rather than in the middle of the laptop, I felt like I was leaning left to do everything. It’s clearly a matter of taste, and no doubt if this were my personal laptop, I would get used to it, but it’s worth noting that there’s no choice on this or any other specification There’s one model, and this is it.

Part of being a Copiolt+ PC means the inclusion of several AI-based features. Microsoft has called out three key features, although I think only one has a genuine impact out of the box. The Recall feature (allowing users to search back through their personal history created by screenshots taken over time and analyzed by AI) has, after some heated online discussion, been left out of the initial package. A preview version for Copilot+PC owners will arrive in the next few months, but for now, the feature is not yett available.

Co-Creator is an image generation tool that can run from text prompts or basic sketched imagery. It’s a nice touch but when was the last time you opened Paint to do any creative work from scratch?

Then, you have the Windows Studio Effects. These work on video captured by the webcam and allow you to add real-time filters over your image, including a useful ‘portrait lighting’ filter to bring your face into the light a little more than may offered by your environment. This is a nice use of AI, staying subtle but providing something useful without too much overhead.

The Asus Vivobook S 15 offers a great screen, class-leading battery life, and a significant lift in performance over last year’s model. Asus does have an advantage here in being one of the first laptops to run the Snapdragon X Elite chipset. It won’t be the last, either. But it has been packaged in a laptop that isn’t threatening, flashy, or garish. It’s a workhorse laptop that quietly lets you get on with your work.

Given it is early days with the Snapdragon X Elite, I’d suggest that for many people waiting to see how the software scene develops, as well as what is offered by other manufacturers, would be a smart choice. Yet even though this is incredibly early in the X Elite life cycle, the Vivobook S 15 is a competent, well specced laptop that’s ready for a general audience.
