Here, we'll uncover the key strategies to craft an impressive response that showcases your ambition and aligns with your career goals . Also, in this article we'll provide sample answers to help you craft your own answer. Let’s get into it.

Why Do Employers Ask The Question “Where Do You See Yourself In 10 Years or 10 Years From Now?” During Interviews?

10 years from now goals essay

Most hiring managers ask questions like, ‘Where do you see yourself in 10 years or 10 years from now?’to better understand your willingness to grow within their organization. Your answer to this question will provide insight as to whether your long-term career goals are a match for the company and, if so, will you be willing to devote the next 10 years of your life to the organization.

If you are confused about your career goals, read our guide on what career coaching is and why you need it .

While planning for the next 10 years of your career can feel overwhelming, this is an important question for organizations to ask their candidates. People who stay with companies long-term are considered better investments and cost effective in terms of hiring when they stay employed longer.

Showing the interviewer that you’re committed to gaining more experience in the position and that you’d like to grow within the company can help set you apart from other candidates . It also demonstrates to hiring managers that it is worth investing in your skills and abilities for the overall good of the organization.

Common Mistakes When Answering This Question

10 years from now goals essay

As with all parts of an interview, it’s possible to make mistakes when answering, “Where do you see yourself in 10 years or 10 years from now?”. One of the biggest mistakes to make is discussing a role or goal that has nothing to do with your current career path or what the company offers. In either case, it makes you seem like a poor match to the hiring manager, which can easily cost you the job.

Similarly, being unrealistic doesn’t work in your favor. For example, if you’re interviewing for an entry-level role after just graduating from college, saying that you’ll be the CEO of the biggest company isn’t a wise move. Even if it’s technically possible, calling that goal lofty is an understatement, so it can make you seem naïve.

Also, if you want to become a leader but don’t know how to go about it,  then read our guide on mastering 8 leadership styles .

However, undershooting isn’t a wise move either. If your main goal is to move from an entry-level job to the next position up, that can work against you. The hiring manager may worry that you lack ambition or may even tend to doubt your capabilities as far as the company is concerned. In either case, it could be enough reason for them to take a pause on you.

Saying you want the hiring manager’s job specifically is seldom an intelligent move. By phrasing it that way, your answer comes off as threatening or aggressive. Again, that doesn’t make you seem like a solid choice, so avoiding that misstep is better.

Steps To Prepare For The Interview Question “Where Do You See Yourself In 10 Years or 10 Year From Now”

10 years from now goals essay

You should take a few key steps to prepare for this interview question. These steps include:

  •   Research About The Company

Take some time before the interview to research about the company. See if you can determine their long-term goals and the types of skills and talent they value. The more you know about the organization, the better you’ll be able to align your goals with the company’s goals.

  •   Brainstorm Your Goals For The Future

You should also brainstorm your specific professional goals over the next 10 years. For example, are you looking forward to being in a management position ? Do you want any marketing certifications or training under your belt in 10 years? To make it easier, break your goals into one year, five years, and 10 years.

  •   Tie Your Answer In With The Position You’re Applying For

To show interest in growing with the company, ensure your 10-year professional goals correlate with the job. For example, if you’re applying for a position as a marketing assistant , you could say that within 10 years, you hope to be the head of the marketing department.

Also, if you want to impress your employers with your interview, read our guide on 10 best ways to answer why you’re perfect for the job .

  •   Don’t Be Afraid To Tell The Interviewer What You Want

While you certainly want to align your career goals with the position, you should also be honest about your long-term goals. Even if your goals aren’t an exact match for the job, if the hiring manager believes you’re the right candidate, they may customize the role to suit your wants and needs better. For example, if you’re applying for a marketing assistant position and want to transition into a graphic design position eventually, the hiring manager could incorporate time where you can sit in on graphic design meetings and work with a graphic designer for a few hours each month.

  •   Follow Up On Your Answer With A Question.

Asking the interviewer questions shows you are truly interested and excited about the job. After you answer the interview question about your career goals over the next 10 years, consider asking the interviewer what the organization’s short-term and long-term goals are. You can also inquire about the company's  specific plans for the particular position you’re applying for.

10 years from now goals essay

Here are a few tips to keep in mind when providing your answer to this type of interview question:

  •   Ensure Your Answer Is Realistic

While you certainly want to be ambitious, you also want to be realistic. Providing an unrealistic answer could come off as being unprofessional or inexperienced.

  •   Be Prepared For Variations Of This Interview Question

While some interviewers may ask about your career goals over the next 10 years, others may ask about your goals for the next three or five years. Being prepared to answer variations of ‘Where do you see yourself in 10 years or 10 years from now?’ will ensure you aren’t caught off guard and can professionally and effectively answer whatever question they ask.

  •   Avoid Answers That Are Too-Vague

Being too vague about what you want to do with your career could be unprofessional or leave the impression that you have no ambition or passion for your career. It can also signal that you probably won’t stick around for long in the position, which hiring managers usually consider a red flag.

Where Do You See Yourself In 10 Years? (Example Answers Included)

where do you see yourself in 10 years

By Mike Simpson

Where do you see yourself in 10 years? It’s one of those interview questions that seems so simple on the surface but is actually incredibly hard to answer. After all, no one can predict the future 100 percent accurately, right? So, how are you supposed to come up with an awesome response?

Yes, getting the answer right can be a little tricky. However, by using the correct strategy, it gets much easier. If you want to have a stand-out answer for the interview classic, where do you see yourself in 10 years, here’s what you need to know.

The 10-Year Period vs. the 5-Year Period

Okay, before we dive into how to answer this question, let’s take a second and talk about the highly similar one – “ Where do you see yourself in five years? ” – and how the two compare.

While the two questions have a lot in common, how you answer them isn’t the same. Yes, you’re talking about the future in both cases. But the thing is, 10 years is a lot further away.

Think about it this way; ten years ago, the first Tesla Model S made it into a customer’s hands. The iPad was only two years old, and people were still wondering about the future of touch computing . Siri was also new, launching in late 2011.

Ultimately, a lot of change can happen in five years. But compare it to 10 years, and it seems like nothing.

Over 10 years, most professionals mature and grow a lot in their careers. You can go from entry-level to management in that time frame in many fields. That kind of development just isn’t common in half that time.

That’s part of why this question is such a doozy. You aren’t just thinking about the next step or two in your career; you have to consider the next half-dozen steps. That isn’t easy.

Couple that with the fact that predicting how your field will evolve in that time is hard, and it may seem like a perfect answer to “where do you see yourself in 10 years” doesn’t exist. However, that isn’t the case. By understanding what the hiring manager is trying to learn, it’s far easier to create an excellent response.

Why Does the Hiring Manager Ask This Question?

Since the hiring manager knows that you can’t tell the future, why on earth would they ask you a question like this? Mainly, they want to see if your long-term vision for your career aligns with the company.

In the end, hiring managers usually focus on very specific things when making hiring decisions. While ensuring you have the right hard and soft skills is part of the equation, they also want to assess your potential for longevity. If your long-term career goals don’t mesh with the company, they’ll likely assume you won’t stick around for long. Since retention is critical in their eyes, that makes you a less desirable candidate.

However, if your vision for the future could easily play out while working for them, the opposite is true. They’ll view you as a stronger candidate because your goals align. Essentially, you’ll look like a better investment.

Another point the hiring manager is assessing with this question is your mindset. Often, you can tell a lot about a person’s personality based on how they answer this question. For example, you can determine if a candidate is methodical, reasonable, bold, or ambitious depending on how they respond. That’s a lot of potential information.

In the end, the hiring manager is typically focused on those two points when they ask this question. By focusing on those areas, you can increase your odds of standing out from the crowd.

Common Mistakes When Answering This Question

As with all parts of an interview, it’s possible to make mistakes when answering, “Where do you see yourself in 10 years?” One of the biggest is discussing a role or goal that has nothing to do with your current career path or what the company offers. In either case, it makes you seem like a poor match to the hiring manager, so it can easily cost you the job.

Similarly, being unrealistic doesn’t work in your favor. For example, if you’re interviewing for an entry-level role after just graduating from college, saying that you’ll be a CEO of a Fortune 500 company isn’t a wise move. Even if it’s technically possible, calling that goal lofty is an understatement, so it can make you seem naïve.

However, undershooting isn’t a wise move either. If your main goal is to move from an entry-level job to the next position up, that can work against you. The hiring manager may worry that you lack any ambition or wonder that you doubt your capabilities. In either case, it could be enough to give them pause.

Saying you want the hiring manager’s job specifically is seldom an intelligent move. By phrasing it that way, your answer comes off as threatening or aggressive. Again, that doesn’t make you seem like a solid choice, so it’s better to avoid that misstep entirely.

Also remember, this is just one question the hiring manager could ask you in your interview! That’s why we created an amazing free cheat sheet that will give you word-for-word answers for some of the toughest interview questions you are going to face in your upcoming interview.

Tips for Answering This Question

While you can’t see the future, that doesn’t mean you can’t come up with a stellar response to “Where do you see yourself in 10 years?” If you aren’t sure how to start, here are three helpful tips.

Learn About the Company

First and foremost, you want to find out a bit more about the company before you try to create an answer for this interview question. In the end, you need to discuss a goal that aligns with something the company brings to the table. That could include supporting their mission, advancing into roles they offer, or something similar.

In the end, you won’t know how to tie everything together if you don’t do some research. As a result, this is the best place to start.

Review Your Career Path

After learning a bit about the company, take a deep dive into your career path. Dig into the roles that logically come next and how long it typically takes to land them. That way, you can discuss various positions you’d like to hold during the 10-year period while ensuring your response is realistic.

Mention the Employer Specifically

If you can tie in a goal about supporting or advancing your employer’s position, market share, or anything in that vein, do it. Along with general goal alignment, part of your plan is to provide a company with exceptional value. You’re aiming to help your employer do more, which may be just the thing to set you apart from the crowd.

How to Answer the Interview Question “Where Do You See Yourself in 10 Years?”

Alright, now it’s time to dive into what you’re hoping to learn: how to answer the “Where do you see yourself in 10 years?” interview question.

So, what does it take to nail this one? Well, it takes a reliable strategy. First, it’s time to get to know our friend, the Tailoring Method . With the Tailoring Method, you can craft answers that are as relevant to the role and hiring manager as possible. And, since creating alignment increases your odds of moving forward in the hiring process and securing a job offer, that’s vital.

Beyond that, you need to discuss a challenging but realistic objective you’d like to obtain, preferably while showcasing how you’ll provide an employer with value. By bringing that all together, you’ll have a far easier time impressing the hiring manager.

Are you ready to make sure that your answer is top-notch? Excellent! Here’s a step-by-step guide and some example answers to make that easier.

Step-by-Step Guide

Creating a great answer means touching on the right bases. By using a systematic approach, you can cover every critical point. Here’s how to tackle the “Where do you see yourself in 10 years?” interview question.

1. Learn About the Role and Company

As mentioned above, you need to know quite a bit about the company and job to come up with a relevant answer. Review the job description to learn more about the duties, then compare it to the company’s mission and values. Find places where everything aligns, and use that as a starting point.

2. Outline Your Career Path

After your initial research, it’s time to determine what’s realistic based on your chosen career path. Do a bit of digging to see what positions people work their way toward in 10 years (based on where you’re starting from), giving you a reasonable baseline.

3. Determine How You Can Deliver Value Along the Way

Now that you know where you can get in the next 10 years and how to relate your goals to the company’s mission or values, it’s time to go further. Think about how you can move down that path while bringing an employer exceptional value. Reflect on this company’s (or hiring manager’s) unique needs. That way, you can make this part as relevant as possible.

4. Refine Your Answer to Keep It Concise

Since this question is traditional, you want to keep your response concise. You don’t need to touch on every step in your plan. Instead, aim for a quick overview only, limiting yourself to the equivalent of just a couple of paragraphs.

Example Answers

Alright, so you probably have a solid idea of how to approach answering “Where do you see yourself in 10 years?” But sometimes, nothing brings it all together than a few examples. So, here are some sample answers to inspire you, each focusing on a different career level.

Entry-Level Recent Graduate

EXAMPLE ANSWER:

As a recent college graduate, my main goal for the next 10 years is to learn and grow with a company, allowing me to support critical processes as I hone my skills. Along the way, I’m planning to explore emerging technologies that are benefitting the industry. Since your company is planning new implementations, I believe this allows me to provide exceptional value as I gain experience in the field, hopefully putting me on a management track.

Mid-Career Individual Contributor

During my career, I’ve largely focused on honing my skills, ensuring I can provide exceptional value to my employer. However, recently, I’ve had the opportunity to step into a leadership role, spearheading a critical project and overseeing a team. Through that experience, I’ve developed a love for coaching others toward success. As a result, I’m looking to shift from individual contributor to management within the coming years, ensuring I can provide value to companies by supporting the success of not just myself but those around me.
I’ve had the opportunity to work with amazing people throughout my career. It’s the people that led me onto a management track. Being able to support the growth and success of not just a company but every individual on my team is incredibly rewarding. Since your company also values its workforce and has a reputation for an exceptional culture, I believe that makes this position a clear fit. The role will help me move closer to my goal, allowing me to shift from overseeing a team to managing entire departments within the next 10 years.

Putting It All Together

At this point, you should have a solid idea of how to answer “Where do you see yourself in 10 years?” Make sure to use all of the tips above to your advantage. That way, when you meet with a hiring manager next, you’ll be ready to impress.

10-Year Life Plan Essay

  • To find inspiration for your paper and overcome writer’s block
  • As a source of information (ensure proper referencing)
  • As a template for you assignment

Educational Plan

Lifestyle plan, works cited.

Planning ten years of my life seems like a kind of challenge now. We can’t predict what will happen to us after several months. However, I believe that great success is impossible without personal motivation and clearly defined goals. Thus, my life plan essay should start with a clear objective.

In ten years, I want to own an event company that can be the best in its field. I have always been fascinated with this idea. The following 10-year life plan essay will consist of three parts that can help me structure my future and achieve all my goals.

I would like to organize great performances at different events every day. Can you imagine a holiday that never ends? And this will be my work. I will make people happier. Now I need to plan all the steps to help me achieve my dream.

The first step of the way of my goal’s achievement is education. My education will be done at the University of Nevada, where I am planning to study hospitality management as a major and event management as a minor. I am sure of the importance of hard study for my future work. I need to get at least a 3.5 GPA. The multiple locations can help me gain a diversified background and extend my knowledge.

Therefore, I want to do some internship while studying. Perhaps, I will visit different countries to explore the modern tendencies of business start and its future development. Swope says: “I cannot give you the formula for success, but I can give you the formula for failure, which is: “Try to please everybody” (Swope).

Therefore, I am planning to get experience in different fields because I am sure of their future importance for my business. The examples of some international companies can help me understand how to make my business prosper. To extend my experience, I will start my practice during the study.

I think that education is very important. The lack of knowledge can lead to the business’s incapacity and collapse. Today, the diploma plays a significant role. It gives an appropriate status and respect. A man with a diploma looks more confident and, of course, qualified.

Accreditation provides much more opportunities in life. Therefore, I am planning to study hard and get as much knowledge as possible. I am sure that the university I chose can help me achieve my goals. My education will give me the base for my future business.

It is the most important part of the life plan, which should clarify the goal and approaches to its achievement. Nowadays, the leaders of all companies know the value of settings achievable and understandable goals. Such issues are called smart goals, which need to get better results. These smart ideas help me share my vision of the business with the possible assistants (“Life Planning”).

My attention is turned to the use of certain tools that may help my project. For instance, I need to identify and list all the barriers that may be between me and my goal. I shouldn’t be scared of possible problems because it is an integral part of my future success. Being realistic, I realize all the difficulties I should overcome.

In the beginning, I have to clarify who will be involved in my business. This can be a family company, or I can cooperate with a wide circle of partners. What results do I want to achieve? I want to own a successful company that will be famous around the country.

Choosing the place location, I prefer my native city because it will be easier to find clients and partners. Thinking about these questions, I can clearly understand all the important keys to my goal’s achievement. I will get so many opportunities, so I shouldn’t be lazy in its use (Ashton 8). This is why I think it is the most important period of my life.

My lifestyle should accomplish my educational and professional background and skills. I am planning to do a huge social work and to promote equality among people. I want to help everyone that I can. But I have to learn more from the closest one.

My business will be closely related to people from different communities. Therefore, matching my wants, I should be ready to keep my mind open to different cultural issues and views. I plan to visit many countries to learn about cultural features. This will help in my work with clients.

According to Bukofsky, even my religious and spiritual conditions are very important for my business (34). Family relations also play a huge role in the business success achievement. Life planning is a process that may lead a person to take a more active role and to think about the future. Thinking about my future, I imagine a family that will support me and give me more motivation.

I totally agree with Carlson that “self-actualization is the key to self-help” (9). Although no one can control all life’s events, it is better to try being over random chance and fate.

There is a difference between the person who goes to one’s goal and the man who can easily be influenced by random events. I will structure my life according to the daily plan. This will allow me to follow the main idea, which will lead to success. The life plan is a perfect method to figure out what is really important in life.

I have so many ideas and interests in different fields. I am fascinated by people who can concentrate on the most important idea and follow the plan. However, I should follow my own life plan for the future result. I agree with the statement of Barnett that people should discipline themselves. Following the main idea of life, it is possible to get better results and to make it fast (Barnett).

I have always been a goal-setter. Thereby, my Ten Year Plan is focused on achieving my high ideals and realistic goals. From time to time, it seems that goals are something that we strive to achieve but fail due to personal reasons or social barriers.

However, I am completely sure that a good life plan and motivation can lead to success in spite of all problems that may occur. My Ten Year Life Plan helps me to specify my goals and to see the key moments and the most important steps which can lead me to success.

My Life In 10 Years Essay: We as a whole have objectives that we endeavor to accomplish. Some present moments, others long haul. Objectives make our lives energizing. My Life Goals in 10 Years Essay

When defining individual objectives we should initially consider where we as of now are. Maybe you have done very well monetarily, however, your own connections are seriously inadequate. Perhaps your marriage is secure and friendly, however, in the space of sentiment, the fire has since a long time ago darkened. We need to take a legitimate evaluation of where we have succeeded and where we have fizzled. At that point, we can decide how to continue forward. Considering this, here are 10 essential objectives to achieve as you plan for life in the following 10 years.

Marriage and Family Harmony

Keeping up and extending just as reestablishing and mending in this space ought to totally be the main concern in your own objectives. Pinpoint the connections in the direst condition. It may very well be that your marriage is in extreme difficulty. Potentially your relationship with an ex makes incredible agony in your whole family. Maybe it’s compelling correspondence issues with your youngsters. Any place the peril focuses is, the objective is to decide them and devise an arrangement for settling the issues. Make certain to feature where you have prevailing too, and how you may develop those seeds somewhere else. The objective is a family living in harmony and agreement.

Obligation to Improved Physical Health

A decent spot to begin when discussing life objectives is to ensure you really have a daily existence a long time from now. That surely begins with great actual wellbeing. There are no certifications on carrying on with a long life, however, it is feasible to enormously build your chances. Tune in to your primary care physician when he advises you to lose those 25 additional pounds. Make an activity plan that you appreciate and relish. Ensure that a long time from now you are however energetic and fit as you seem to be ok at this point.

Start a Business

While having my fantasy work is something I anticipate, remaining utilized for the remainder of my life isn’t something I imagined myself doing. I would prefer not to burn through the entirety of my energetic years building another person’s fantasies. I need to assemble my own fantasy. I have consistently longed for having a business, ideally in the corrective business. I need to work for myself. I need to utilize similar individuals, who will help me assemble my vision. I need to improve the existence of both my clients and representatives. Most importantly, I need to have independence from the rat race.

Organizations require a lot of infusions, as far as time and assets, before they can remain all alone. In this way, beginning a business currently is the best monetary move I can at any point make. I’m as yet youthful, I am constantly on the planet, I have fewer obligations and if there should be an occurrence of a business disappointment, I can generally recover myself. This is presumably the last objective I desire to seek after in my long-term plan since I need to guarantee my life is altogether first before I can begin a business.

Go to my fantasy get-away

There are three places that are at the highest point of my number one objections list. They incorporate Brazil, India, and Egypt. I couldn’t want anything more than to visit Brazil and partake in the festival. I need to be there at the focal point of everything when the roads are lit with brilliant motorcades and everyone is simply singing, moving and having a ball. There are numerous things I might want to find in Brazil, the wonderful seashores, the pink dolphins, Iguazu Falls and in case I’m adequately fortunate, I may take a helicopter ride to have a perspective on the Statue of Christ on top of Corcovado Mountain.

At the point when I consider India, one thing rings a bell the Taj Mahal. Considered one of the marvels of the world, this great castle is made of marbles and valuable stones. I need to be an observer to this famous piece of design that has stood the test of time and keeps on entrancing us right up ’til the present time.

  • Before you begin, ask yourself a few key questions like:
  • What are my short-term and long-term career goals?
  • Where do I see myself in ten years?

Career Goals Essay Template

Need more inspiration.

After you brainstorm the responses to these questions, look for common themes, or pick out the most interesting stories. You can build your main essay “thesis” or idea around this.

Once you’ve got the main idea, create an outline to put your ideas into essay format. This will give you a general idea of structure.

You can use the career essays template below to give you some ideas. But remember that some rules are meant to be broken, so don’t be afraid to be innovative and think outside the box!

Also, when you’re done, head over to Going Merry to apply for the Career Goals scholarship essay bundle (one essay, one application, multiple scholarships!). You might as well make that essay count. Sign up for Going Merry to apply for scholarships more efficiently.

career goals essay

Here’s a paragraph-by-paragraph breakdown:

Paragraph 1 : Establish the main theme of what you’re going to talk about. It should also grab the reader’s attention. For example, instead of starting your essay with something generic (e.g. Ever since I was a little girl, I wanted to be a zoologist), get creative with it! Try something like My greatest memory as a young girl was going to the zoo for the first time or While most kids play house or school, I always wanted to play zookeeper.

Paragraph 2 : Elaborate on what inspired your career goals. Perhaps it was a relative, a TV show, or simply an experience that you had. Remember that old writing adage, “Show, don’t tell.” In other words, try to demonstrate your interest with story or description.

Paragraph 3 : Discuss your short-term career goals and your intended major. How will your intended major help you reach these goals? What skills do you need to learn to reach them? At the end of the paragraph, try discussing how your short-term goals can help you achieve your long-term goals.

Paragraph 4 : Focus on your long-term goals and the impact that you hope to have on society. If you’re not sure what your long-term goals are, don’t sweat it; they’ll probably change anyways. You can instead focus on the difference you’d like to make overall. And don’t worry too much about the size of the impact…remember that just doing what you’re truly passionate about has a massive impact on those around you.

The last paragraph is your conclusion. You can use this paragraph to summarize what you discussed in the previous few paragraphs. If you want to be even more creative, try ending your essay with a question for your readers or a new insight. Good luck!

And now that you’re ready with that essay, put it to good use! You can recycle that same essay, when applying for the Career Goals Scholarship Bundle. The Times asked 18 high school seniors about their plans, and only one said he was undecided about his future. Others said they planned or aspired to pursue careers in psychology, medicine, photography and other fields. How about you? What are your goals? When you look into the future, where do you see yourself 10 years from now?

The Times Magazine’s interactive feature “High-School Seniors Predict Their Future” includes photographs of the 18 students who were interviewed, all from Patrick Henry High School in San Diego, along with audio clips of them talking about their goals. One student, Nathan Rebelo, age 17, said this:

When I get older I want to be an architect. I really, like, just designing homes, and my ultimate goal in life is just to be driving somewhere downtown and just be, like — like, show my kids or my family — just be, like: ‘I designed that building, that is me right there. I have my own stamp on life.’ Next year I’m hoping to go to U.S.C., so my fingers are crossed to get accepted. If I don’t get into U.S.C., I’m kind of just hoping for a school out of San Diego – really kind of just want to spread my wings, kind of. I don’t want to say I want to get away from my family, but I really just want to get on my own and discover who I am and be able to kind of be who I want to be without worrying about who’s going to say this or, just, the judgment of high school.

Students: Tell us about your personal goals. When you look 10 years ahead, where do you see yourself? What do you want to be doing with your career and life, and why? What are your dreams and aspirations in addition to specific goals? If you’re undecided, why do you think that is?

Where do i see myself in ten years; I picture myself a mom and a college graduate. But its so hard to say that when i dont even know what il do next week, or where im goin to college this fall, or what to go to college for?

I think I will be in College. I wanna go to Virgina Tech. I wanna be a sports doctor. I wanna help hurt people in the N.F.L.

In 10 years i see myself in college. Im going to be at UVA college making my mother proud of me. Thats where i want to be and will be.

in ten years I will be geting out of high school and going to college to complete my four years and geting in to med school.

I would probaly be in colledge.I probally be working at mcdonalds in 10 years.

um i am undecided.

I see myself going to college and getting my degree and master and association to become a peditrician because thats what i wanted to be every since i was in 3rd grade.

i will be a active business women, i want everybody admire and respect me. Addition, i want to have a happy family. in brief, I see myself succeed in career and family. Of course, I have to study hard because i don’t want to see my bad future.

I see myself in 10 years becoming one of the best money managers in the nation. I could do it all: basic accounting, taxes, and even help out with investment ideas. With CPA accreditation in all 50 states, I help out actors, athletes, team owners, sports leagues, studios, small businesses, big businesses, banks, local governments, state governments, the Federal government if they ask, the FBI to fight white-collar crime, regular people, and churches, to which my services are free. We go to church every Sunday morning, Sunday night, and Wednesday night. My, my lovely bride, and our friendly but well behaved children. We have a beautiful house in a beautiful part of the country. We have a lot of things but our eyes are focused on Jesus. I love her and show it often. I unangerly and unapologetically reprove my kids when they do wrong. People all over the nation will recognize me as a Christian, and I get some grief for it but I also get a lot of respect for my beliefs. I am a deacon in my church and responsible for many of the things the church has. On the church board of directors, I manage the church’s money and prepare the financial report each month. We go on trips to other nations partially as tourist but mostly to meet missionary on the field and assist them with money and labor. I still love fishing and the great outdoors and I do with my kids that which my father had done with me so long ago. I even coach my children’s soccer team, like my dad did. Despite having much, I don’t forget my high school, my town, my family, my youth, my old church, and my God. This is my life in 10 years.

In ten years I believe I will be teaching high school. I think I will be making medium wage and living in a small community. I think that I will be coaching football somewhere as well. I hope to be able to eat lots of fast food and take lots of vacations. And by then I will be able to have my own secret office finally.

i see myself in debt wishing my life was a little bit better because i’m regretting all my past life decisions.

In ten years I see myself as either working as a psycholgoist or anthropologist, with either a masters or doctorate in both. I would prefer to be working in Europe though a job anywhere in the world will suffice.

I don’t set objectives such as these. I make decisions on a day-to-day basis unless it is absolutely necessary that I make long-term ones. Life is like a box of chocolates-you never know which one you are going to get. I don’t want to be disappointed by not ending up with the one I wanted, but to enjoy the ones that are thrown my way.

I see my being in collage or coming out of collage in ten years. Also i want to be a marine biologoist. And hopefully i will be like that in ten years or maybe even less.

I see my self in ten years in Med school studing to be a doctor. So I can help others fight sickness and diseases.

:)

In ten years, I see myself as a World History Professor for Harvard University.

Be a very good games devolper working on my first game.Workin withe some of the greatist game devolper.

In ten years I imagine myself getting out of UVA College and becoming a teacher!

In ten years I see myself getting out of college hopfuly having a house, and a part time job. I see myself with my with my best friend Kayla Brooke. We will be moving to California married to Josh and Tyler. I hope to have a good job being a nurse or teacher.

i see myself getting out of college and looking for a job and getting together with family.

Everybody has an idea of the type of person they’d like to be and what they will have liked to accomplished within a span of the next ten years. No one can predict the future but I do have an idea of what I would like to do in the years coming up. In a long term sense I would like to have gotten accepted into a fairly prestigious college and have either graduated either from law school or a business program from a one of the top fifteen schools of either programs. I also would like to be in a serious relationship by that point because I will be turning twenty-six and idealy i wold like to be married and gaving kids before I hit thirty. I also would have liked to help run charity events and funraisers for causes like Cancer, Alzheimers, HIV/AIDS , etc. In more cliche matters I would have liked to make a difference in someone’s life. I hope that i am still close with many of the friends that I am close to now. I hope that by that point I have few regrets, and have grown both as a person in society and as an individual. I hope that I can learnt to handle stress in a better way as well as hopefully I have a job that i love and am successful in. These are only hopes and a short list of my dreams and wishes in a more broad aspect but if I’ve accomplished this and my family is healthy and safe I couldn’t really ask for much more.

I see myself in 10 years with a college degree and a job as a Journalist or Dancer. I want to go to a great college and graduate with my masters etc. I want to also start a family when I’m done with college. I also want to be living in a house. I hope to achieve all goals to getting to where I want to be in life.

Goals For 10 Years From Now – Best Tips

Some articles on the blog contain affiliate links, which provide a small commission to help fund the blog. However, they won’t affect the price you pay or the blog’s independence.  Read more here .

Most people set their goals for the new year, but how many people actually sit down and think about what they want 10 years from now? Setting goals for 10 years from now or longer is an important step in achieving your dreams.

Some people may have specific measurable goals they want to accomplish in the next 10 years, others may want to focus on improving their overall health, becoming more financially secure, or simply spending more time with loved ones.

No matter what your goals may be, setting achievable ones is the right way forward, but it can be difficult to know where to start, so let’s go over this in more detail starting with three types of goals, before moving onto how to set goals for 10 years from now.

What are the 3 types of goals?

There are many different types of goals but to make things easy, lets divide them into three categories, which are short-term, mid-term and long-term goals.

Short-term goals  are focused on achieving a specific goal within a short and specific time frame. For example, you might set a goal to finish your homework by 10pm tonight.

Mid-term goals  are those that you want to achieve within the next few months or years. These might include reaching a certain level of productivity at work, becoming more knowledgeable about a particular subject.

Long-term goals  are focused on achieving something that will have lasting consequences. For example, you might set a goal to become a millionaire by the age of 30.

Long-term goals are of course the category that setting goals for 10 years from now would fall under so let’s look at how to set them.

How to set goals for 10 years from now

Now we have looked at the different types of goals, let’s look at how we can set goals for 10 years from now and make them relevant to us. The first thing we need to do is make a list of long-term goals that we want to achieve.

Here are some questions to ask yourself when you’re thinking about your long-term goals:

What do I want to achieve in the next 10 years?

What are my passions?

What motivates me to get out of bed in the morning?

What are my favourite hobbies?

What is my goal in life ?

What would I like to be doing in 10 years?

Setting a 10-year goal is a big deal, and one that will have a massive impact on your life so it’s important to make sure it’s one you’re really passionate about. When you’re thinking about your long-term goals, it’s also important to keep in mind what motivates you.

Once you’ve come up with your long-term goals, it’s time to figure out how to make them a reality. One of the best ways to do this is to create a timeline and plan out how you will achieve each milestone.

For example, start by setting a date for when you want to achieve your first goal. Then, work out how long it will take you to achieve that goal and add that time to your timeline.

Next, add the time it will take you to achieve the next goal and so on until you reach your 10-year goal.

Once you have your timeline, make sure to keep it updated and track your progress every step of the way. This will help you stay motivated and make sure you’re on track to achieve them.

Some people find it easy to come up with goals and know exactly where there want to head in life, but for others it can be difficult to know what to work towards in the short term, let alone the long term, so let’s look at some good examples of long-term goals, to get you started if you are struggling to think of any.

What are some good long-term goals?

Some good long-term goals might include: becoming financially secure, being a good parent or spouse, having a fulfilling career, travelling the world, or simply enjoying life. It is important to find what makes you happy and work towards achieving those goals over the long term. Here is a list of 10 more ideas to get your juices flowing.

 1. Start a business in a field you are passionate about

 2. Become fluent in a second language

3. Become an expert in a particular field

4. Learn to play an instrument

5. Start a blog and become an influential voice in your field

6. Earn a certification in life coaching, personal finance, or another field you are passionate about

7. Write a book and become a published author

8. Learn to scuba dive

9. Learn to play a sport

10 Learn to cook a new cuisine

It doesn’t really matter what you choose if it is something that you are passionate about and can see yourself committing to achieving. The important part is to start somewhere, and then take the first steps in that direction and don’t stop until you achieve your goals for 10 years from now.

In Conclusion

So, there we have it, setting goals is a key step to achieving your dreams and aspirations, but it can be difficult to know where to start when you’re thinking about your goals for 10 years from now. The most important part is that you take the time to sit down and think about what you want to achieve in the long term and what you’re willing to commit to in order to achieve it.

Once you have your list of goals, you need to figure out how to make them a reality and stay motivated. Make sure you choose something that you are passionate about and that inspires you to be better.

It is important to have long term goals in life so that you can maintain a positive outlook and stay motivated. There are many different things you can work towards over the long term, so get started on something today and see how far you can go!

How to create a 10 year plan

Set yourself up for success.

You’ve probably heard this question in a job interview : “Where do you see yourself in five years?”

If you came prepared, you probably answered with a quick overview of your professional 5 year plan . But if an interviewer asks about a 10 year plan, you might feel put on the spot. Whether you’re just starting your career path or eager to plan for an extreme life change, 10 years seems like a long time — and it is.

But having goals for the next decade will help you create a 1 year, 3 year, or 5 year plan to build the future you want. Here’s how to start visualizing your long-term goals and turn that vision into an actionable 10 year plan, with examples to inspire you .

A 10 year plan is an outline of the tasks or milestones you need to accomplish to meet your goals for the next decade. It combines your short-term and long-term objectives to create an achievable but exciting life plan.

If you dream of becoming a doctor, “become a doctor” would be your long-term goal. You need to get into med school first — a short-term goal. Actions like studying for the MCAT and applying to schools would be part of the 10 year plan that helps you achieve both your short- and long-term goals .

But your career isn’t the only thing that you can plan for. Say you want to buy a home within the next 10 years. Homeownership is a goal within your plan. Saving, investing, and building credit would be part of the plan that makes that goal a reality.

A 10 year plan can be whatever you want it to be, whether it concerns your personal life (get married, write a memoir) or your professional goals (start a successful business, become a supervisor). The only rules are that it has to take place over 10 years and contain smaller steps to help you reach goals in the long term.

You’re more than your career. And you’re more than your relationships, your bank account, and the home you live in. But they work together to help you be the person you want to be, living the life you want to live — and you can represent them all in your 10 year plan.

To start creating a realistic plan, divide your 10 year goals into the categories they relate to. You can create as many as you want, but here are the most common categories and what they might include:

Personal and relationship goals

Even if you’re just daydreaming, you probably have some ideas about what your personal life might look like a decade from now. Maybe you want to start a family or volunteer in the community regularly. Start brainstorming a list that matches your vision of the future life you want.

Professional goals

Ask yourself what it would take for you to feel professionally fulfilled. Maybe it’s as straightforward as finding a job at a certain company, or as bold as joining the C-suite at your current job. A lot can happen in your career in 10 years, so this is your chance to dream big. You might even take the leap and start working for yourself as a freelancer or entrepreneur.

Financial goals

Financial wellness can play a huge role in your overall well-being. In 2022, 66% of Americans said money was a significant source of stress in their lives , and creating (and hitting) financial goals can help reduce this stress. If you won’t be satisfied until your credit score is in the 800s and your emergency fund can carry you for a year, add those to the list.

Learning goals

Some skills take time to comprehend, like learning a new language or complicated software, which is why they should be part of your 10 year plan. No matter how many diplomas hang on your office wall, your life will be richer if you make learning something new a lifelong goal. Even if it’s just for fun, write it down.

Fitness goals

Your long-term fitness goals can be as simple or lofty as you want them to be. Just make sure the goals you set are realistic . Give yourself something to work toward without setting yourself up for failure. Running a marathon in the next 10 years is achievable, but you need to find a place to start and create a realistic training routine.

Man-and-woman-running-outdoors-and-smiling-10-year-plan-examples

Only 19% of people follow their New Year’s resolutions over two years . That’s because they often set goals that aren’t realistic in the long term. It takes willpower and dedication to follow a 10 year plan and meet the milestones you set, but it also takes a planning process that considers attainability.

You can use the SMART goal framework for any type of goal to create the most realistic pathway for you. Here’s what SMART stands for:

Specific: The goal is specific and leaves no room for confusion

Measurable: The goal is something you can make measurable progress toward

Attainable: The goal is something you can realistically achieve

Relevant: The goal is relevant to the values, dreams, and ambitions that matter to you

Time-bound: The goal isn’t open-ended, and you can put a target completion date on it

Some of the ideas you have for your 10 year plan might not be SMART right away. But with these broader goals in mind, you’ll be able to set short-term SMART goals that bring your 10 year vision into focus.

What makes a goal attainable?

Every letter in SMART plays its own role, but the “A” for “attainable” is especially important to note. It’s about setting goals you can actually achieve — but that doesn’t mean they need to be easy. They just need to be in your control.

Winning the lottery, for example, isn’t an attainable goal. Saying you want it and using up your budget won’t make it a reality. Winning the jackpot will always be outside of your control.

Man-looking-out-the-window-thoughtful-10-year-plan-examples

Becoming a doctor, on the other hand, might be attainable, even if it seems far away. How realistic this goal is depends on a variety of factors, like what you studied in college and how much time and money you have to go to grad school . But there are actionable steps you can take to make it happen.

According to a study in the Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology, specific and difficult goals lead to better performance . If every goal you set is easy to complete, you won’t perform to your highest potential. Personal development comes from pushing yourself and leaving your comfort zone . Be realistic, but give yourself a challenge, and don’t be afraid to take risks .

Example goals for a 10 year plan

A 10 year plan is personal. It’s about you, the people you’re close to, and your personal values , which makes it harder to ask for advice on what your goals should be. But here are some 10 year goal examples to inspire you and give you a sense of what a plan could include:

  • Get promoted: Earning a promotion can happen in much less than 10 years, but if you set your sights on a high-level position, the process can take a long time. You need to start from the bottom, prove your worth, and slowly move up the ladder.

Build a tiny home: You’ll first need to decide where and what you want to build. Materials cost money, so start creating a budget and saving up. If you choose to build on your own, you’ll also need to learn construction skills, so make a plan for adding that knowledge to your tool belt.

Move to Europe: Moving abroad doesn’t just require strong finances. You’ll need to decide where you want to go and why. And you’ll likely need a visa, whether it’s for work, study, or residency. Your 10 year plan should include saving up, finding jobs, and starting to create a network abroad.

Join a rowing team: If you’re looking to join a high-level team, you may need to spend some time working on strength and conditioning. If you’re not a strong swimmer, taking lessons and joining a gym with a pool will help get you closer to your goal over a few years.

Reduce blood sugar: To accomplish this goal, you may need to make some big shifts to your diet. And if exercise isn’t already part of your day-to-day, you’ll want to work on making it a habit. A decade is more than enough time to find consistent routines that work for you.

Pay off student loans: You can keep paying the minimum amount on your student loans forever, but if you want them gone within 10 years, you’ll need a plan. Maybe you need to refinance your loan or adjust your payment plan . Do your research and create a realistic budget.

Learn a new language: If you want to become fluent in another language, you might want to consider spending six months or a year in another country. That’s a plan for the future, but for now, you can look into enrolling in language classes.

Once you decide what your goal is, start mapping out a clear year-by-year plan. Remember that it’ll probably change if you go along. If you find something unachievable, find ways around it, and be kind to yourself.

Here’s what a 10-year plan might look like for someone who’s trying to get a job as a senior project manager:

Year 1: Start applying for master’s degrees and scholarships

Year 2: Get into a program and start studying in September

Year 3: Graduate and network with peers

Year 4: Find an internship working under a project manager

Year 5: Land an entry-level role

Year 6: Thrive on the job and take extra courses to close skill gaps

Year 7: Get promoted to a project management position

Year 8: Attend networking events and go the extra mile at work

Year 9: Continue working hard, letting senior team members know you’re interested in a larger role

Year 10: Land a senior project manager position

You don’t have to create goals for every aspect of your life all at once. Goal-setting can take place over the course of a week, a month, or even several months. And it’s important to remember that goals can (and will) change, especially when they cover a period as long as 10 years.

Your big-picture goals — the things you want to achieve over the next decade — are likely vague. Things like “learn a foreign language” and “have a happy family life” are just a starting point. You’ll work backward from there to create a plan you can act on. Here’s how to break it down:

1. Define your long-term goals

If professional development is your current top priority, start with your long-term career goals. If you have an entrepreneurial spirit , maybe being your own boss is part of your vision. At this stage, your long-term objectives can be as grand as you want, as long as you can break them down into steps.

2. Start researching

Start with research, both internal and external. If owning a business is your main goal but you’re not sure what exactly you want to do, think about your skills and what kind of small business those skills would be suited for. Find people whose career paths you want to emulate and start learning from them.

3. Start planning

Keep working your way backward from your long-term goal until you find your first steps. If getting a business degree will help you find a better job now while preparing you to start your own company, figure out a realistic timeline. How long would a degree take you to complete? When would you like to start?

In this example, your 10 year goal is to own a business. But you need yearly goals to get you there. Your 1 year plan might include enrolling in a GMAT prep class and taking the test. Your 2 year plan might include applying to schools. Your 5 year plan might include completing your MBA, and so on.

4. Get support from your community

There’s one incredibly valuable resource to keep in mind: other people. As you work to create a life plan for the future you, turn to the friends, family, and mentors you trust for support. Connect with wellness experts to achieve your fitness goals. Make professional moves with a career coach by your side.

The most important thing to remember is that you’re never alone in achieving your goals. No matter where you are in life, you’ll have people cheering you on. And in 10 years, you can pay it forward, share your wisdom, and inspire others .

These 10 year plan examples are just that — examples. The vision you create for your future will look different than anyone else’s. But with research, hard work, and support from your community, you’ll learn and grow. And whether you achieve all your goals or not, working for them will give you a sense of accomplishment.

Congratulations on getting the job interview!  You now have the chance to make a positive impression and win over the recruiters. But for that, you have to learn how to answer tricky questions. One possible question you might be asked is, “What do you think your future will look like in 10 years?”

This question is a way for the interviewer to understand your career goals and how they align with the company’s values. Your answer to this question could hold the secret to opening the door to your dream job. In this comprehensive blog, we’ll delve into the steps of answering this question. We’ll provide you with the insights, strategies, and tips you need to respond with confidence.

Table of Contents

Why Do Recruiters Ask This Question?

By asking this question, recruiters want to learn two things:

  • Do your long-term career objectives align with those of the company? Simply put, recruiters wish to know if you intend to remain and contribute to their team for a while.
  • Are you able to create goals that will advance your career? Recruiters prefer to hire people who set and achieve ambitious goals because such employees can positively impact the growth of the business.

How to Answer this Question Correctly?

If you’re asked “Where do you see yourself 10 years from now?” here is a great way to answer:

1. Conduct Thorough Research

To discover more about the company’s operations, customers, and projects, check out its website and social media pages. Additionally, carefully read the job description to make sure your skills and experience align with the company. Also, ensure that you align with the company’s mode of working, that is, if it’s an in-office role, you are ready to work from the office or if it’s a work from home job , you have the facilities to work from home.

2. Link Your Response to the Position

Make sure your response is specifically related to the position and the organization you are interviewing with in order to create a good impression on the interviewers. They would like to learn that you want to have a long-lasting career in their company. Express your desire to take on extra responsibilities and to grow in your job as you acquire experience.

3. Showcase Your Ambition

Show the interviewers that you’re a goal-driven person who has a strong desire to develop in the role. It’s crucial to express ambition in your response while being logical and realistic. Candidates who demonstrate a true knowledge of the position are valued by interviewers. Expressing your desire to assume a leadership role inside the firm is more practical than making unrealistic statements like becoming a CEO in ten years.

4. Highlight Relevant Education and Experience

Explain how your education and work experience have helped you to achieve your long-term goals and how they have equipped you for the position. This shows how you could advance the growth of the business.

5. Use the STAR Interview Approach

To successfully respond to the questions, use the STAR interview approach (Situation, Task, Action, Result).

  • Situation: To begin, simply describe your present professional situation, including your current job.

“I am currently a front-end web developer.”

  • Task: Discuss your long-term professional objective for the next ten years.

“I want to become a full-stack developer.”

  • Action: Outline achievable actions, including skill development and organizational contributions, that will help you achieve your goals.

“I am currently pursuing a web development course to hone my skills further and understand the latest developments in my field. I wish to gain hands-on experience in the field by working in your company so that I am able to grow into my dream job role.”

  • Result: Share the result you anticipate in 10 years that is in line with your purpose and beneficial to both you and the business.

“My goals have and will continue to motivate me to become better at my job which aligns with the growth-oriented perspective of this company.”

This structure demands you to define the situation, specify the task at hand, provide specifics on your actions, and explain the anticipated results.

6. Project Confidence

Speak firmly and with a clear understanding of your objectives. However, maintain an appropriate amount of humility and openness to feedback. Your attraction as a candidate increases because confidence demonstrates your forward-thinking nature and commitment to professional development.

7. Conclude with a Question

If you’re not sure about the best response to the question, “Where do you see yourself in the next 10 years”, then throw a question back to them. Ask this question in a way that expresses your interest in the company, without making it look like you’re trying to get information from them.

“I’m happy about working here because I believe I can grow with the company, assisting customers in understanding our product better. Does this relate to the mission of your organization?”

You can also ask what their long-term expectations are from their employees.

Sample Answers to the Interview Question

Here are possible ways to answer the question, “Where do you see yourself in the next 10 years?” These sample answers are based on your experience level:

1. Entry Level/Fresher

For a recent graduate starting at the entry-level, this example can be useful.

My main goal for the next 10 years as a recent college graduate is to learn new things and develop inside a firm while honing my talents. I want to learn about the latest innovations that are helping the sector along the way. I think this job presents a great chance for me to meaningfully contribute while gaining experience in the industry.

2. Mid Level Professional

If you’ve already been a professional with reasonable experience, here is a way to express your growth and show that you still intend to grow:

Over the years, I’ve put a lot of effort into improving my skills and making a difference at work. I just got the opportunity to oversee a team and lead a significant project. I have learned to truly appreciate supporting others’ success because of this. So, in the next years, I’m considering transitioning from performing the work myself to managing others because the success of organizations and the individuals I deal with are very important to me.

3. Managerial Level

If you’ve already attained a management role, here is how you can answer the question, “Where do you see yourself in the next 10 years?”

I’ve had the privilege of working with incredible people throughout my career. They have motivated me to pursue a position as a manager. It has been greatly fulfilling to contribute to a company’s success and watch my teammates grow.

In the next ten years, I want to go from managing teams to overseeing entire departments, and this position will help me do that. Your organization has an excellent work culture and it values its employees.

Generic Sample Answers

Here are more generic answers that can help you answer the question, “Where do you see yourself 10 years from now”:

1. Developing My Skills

I want a career where my views are valued and I can actually make a difference. I believe I can develop my abilities in this position and eventually assume greater responsibility. In the next 10 years, I see myself learning more, developing my skills, and gaining experience. I wish to advance with the company and support others in achieving their professional goals. I’d also love to know, in the long run, what do you anticipate from someone in this position.

2. Starting My Own Business

In the next 10 years, I aim to launch my own company using my expertise and enthusiasm in the industry. I enjoy coming up with creative ideas and see every problem as an opportunity to create something unique that addresses particular market issues. My main objective is to build a successful company, and I am certain that I can overcome difficulties and seize the chances presented by the constantly evolving business ecosystem.

3. Taking on More Responsibilities

I’m enthusiastic about this opportunity since your organization sounds like an excellent place to work. I would like to work for an organization that is ambitious and growth-oriented, and based on what I’ve studied, it appears that your business is headed in that direction. In 10 years, I hope to play increasingly significant roles and help your business realize its full potential.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Answering the Question

The following advice can help you avoid common mistakes while outlining your 10-year vision during a job interview:

  • Be specific: Avoid providing vague or general responses that don’t support your professional goals.
  • Think Long Term: Describe your long-term professional goals as well as your short-term goals. Describe how you’ll grow after the first five years and increase your talents.
  • Plan to Grow Beyond One Position: While excitement for the position is good, emphasize wider career goals rather than just one particular position inside the firm.
  • Be Different: Avoid giving the same generic responses that you often hear in interviews. Instead, give a personalized response that highlights your talents and objectives.

Recruiters use the question, “Where do you see yourself in 10 years?” as a vital tool to assess a candidate’s alignment with the company’s goals and their capacity to define and meet professional ambitions. To reply well, do your homework on the business and tailor your response with regard to the position you are applying for. Keep in mind that being precise and avoiding generic responses can help you stand out.

Make them 10-Year SMART Goals!

Once you’ve selected your 10-year vision from the list above, it’s time to flesh it out by turning it into a SMART goal (Doran, 1981).

This is a framework that helps you refine and fully explain your goal, which research finds makes you more likely to stick to the goal you set and achieve success (Milne, Orbell & Sheeran, 2002).

Here’s what the S.M.A.R.T. acronym stands for:

  • Specific: Be specific in order to ensure you are very clear about what success looks like.
  • Measurable: Ensure that you can measure progress so you know when you’ve obtained success.
  • Achievable: Make sure the goal can be achieved – but remember, for longer-term goals, set your sights high. You can achieve more than you think!
  • Relevant: Select goals that are relevant to you, your family, your personality, and your overall life goals .
  • Time-Based: Obviously, your end-goal will be a decade from now. But do you have milestones along the way – say, every two years, where you can assess your progress?

To help you to create your SMART Goals, I’ve provided this template that you can save, edit, and print:

Me in Ten Years Time

Imagining the future, while exciting, can be an arduous task. Even just trying to look ten years ahead is challenging for me.

Person Writing on White Paper

There seems to be a disconnect between reality and an imagined future. It almost feels like an out-of-body experience to look at ourselves in another season of life that we have yet to experience. Technologies and trends are different. Customs and attitudes are also different. Even physical appearances are different. Dreaming about life years from now feels like taking a trip to a country you’ve never visited. Everything is unfamiliar.

Despite this obvious departure from reality into wishful thinking, dreaming of the future sure is an exciting experience. To imagine me after a decade only provides a semblance of what the future holds for me. But what really matters is the countless possibilities the future holds. This is what I want to keep my eyes on. It should be where we anchor our goals so that we will work hard towards attaining them later on.

White Paper With Note

With that said, in ten years’ time, I see myself working at a company that offers an exciting environment to thrive in. I would be part of a brilliant creative team in the advertising industry, where my creativity will be allowed to flourish unhindered. I would be working as a productive member of the team, who is able to work well with others in translating drawings into the profitable design.

In a decade, I will have saved enough money to start my own business. I’m not sure about what I would be selling, but I am certain at this point that I would offer things that are practical and functional. Ultimately, my goal is to attain a certain level of wealth. The goal of shifting to entrepreneurship will be to sustain my family and guarantee a steady income that can make them happy and satisfied.

In a decade, I would like to start a family. I want to have two kids and a house where they can grow up healthy and smart. It will not be a big house, but it shall be a simple place where we can eat together, have meaningful conversations, and lead happy normal lives. While my partner and I will be dedicated to the success of our jobs and businesses, we will prioritize our family above everything else. After all, the reason for our working hard is to provide our children with better education, good food, and a comfortable place where they are fully nurtured and cared for.

In ten years’ time, I will be pursuing the hobbies that I’ve liked since I was a child. I know for one thing that work can be hectic, stressful, and downright tiring. What better way to unwind than to do something I really love? And so in my spare time, I will be writing and developing a novel that will mirror my life, my aspirations, and my thoughts on the universe. It will be a book that will hopefully touch so many lives. It will also be a book that can give a lot of people optimism about what the future holds for them.

While I believe these are all great dreams and visions, I know that the future remains to be a very mysterious place. But the fact remains that a concrete and purposeful image of the future shall compel us to do more for ourselves and make an impact in our own lives.

What dreams do you have for yourself? A happy life? A successful career? That coveted master’s degree? Building that dream family? Whatever your heart desires, put it on an intentional mental roadmap. While I looked at the next ten years of my life, you can start however small or big you want to. If ten years is overwhelming for you, try two or three. If ten years is too easy, try fifteen or twenty. The important thing is to have a vision for yourself so that you are motivated to turn them into actionable goals you can pursue in the next few years.

Know that whatever you put your mind to can manifest in your reality.

Where Do You See Yourself In 10 Years (Short Essay Sample)

Have you ever wondered about what your life could look like a decade ahead? 10 years seems like a long period of time, but the truth is, they just fly by.

I am a big believer that though it is difficult to do, we need to have a vision for ourselves and be able to think of our endgame and how we’re going to get there. One’s life is too important to just live passively. I don’t want to waste time just reacting to the events of life. I want to be proactive in every season.

I have always wanted to be someone who has a loving family with an ever-evolving career on the side, so I want to focus on these for the next 10 years. Once the decade is up, I see myself married with two children. I want to be so committed to them that any career success will just be icing on the cake. I want the next ten years to be all about my health as I want to be on the top of my game by the time I enter the next decade of my life.

How Do You Start An Essay About Your Future?

Thinking about the future requires a lot of mental stamina because you will be using your imagination. You will try to actualize things that are still intangible and certain, and you will need to have some concrete ideas on how to make them happen. The best way to start is, to begin with, the outcome, then work your way backward. Without thinking first about how you’re going to get there, let your imagination fly. What does life look like 10 years from now? What will you be doing? What will be important to you? What do your priorities look like? Who are the key people surrounding you and are constantly in your life?

How Can I Write My Future Plan?

To create a personal plan for your future, start with a vision or a purpose. What’s your big “Why”? To determine this, take a look at your passions, skills, and network. What does your heartbeat for? What are your hands good at doing? What type of work do you do well? How about your community – who are the people who have the greatest influence on you? Who are the people who have connections to your passions and skills? Afterward, the next step is to create a roadmap to fulfilling that purpose. Work backward from the future – determine the previous step from looking at the current step, all the way until you reach your current state today.

If 2023 was the year the world discovered generative AI (gen AI) , 2024 is the year organizations truly began using—and deriving business value from—this new technology. In the latest McKinsey Global Survey  on AI, 65 percent of respondents report that their organizations are regularly using gen AI, nearly double the percentage from our previous survey just ten months ago. Respondents’ expectations for gen AI’s impact remain as high as they were last year , with three-quarters predicting that gen AI will lead to significant or disruptive change in their industries in the years ahead.

About the authors

This article is a collaborative effort by Alex Singla , Alexander Sukharevsky , Lareina Yee , and Michael Chui , with Bryce Hall , representing views from QuantumBlack, AI by McKinsey, and McKinsey Digital.

Organizations are already seeing material benefits from gen AI use, reporting both cost decreases and revenue jumps in the business units deploying the technology. The survey also provides insights into the kinds of risks presented by gen AI—most notably, inaccuracy—as well as the emerging practices of top performers to mitigate those challenges and capture value.

AI adoption surges

Interest in generative AI has also brightened the spotlight on a broader set of AI capabilities. For the past six years, AI adoption by respondents’ organizations has hovered at about 50 percent. This year, the survey finds that adoption has jumped to 72 percent (Exhibit 1). And the interest is truly global in scope. Our 2023 survey found that AI adoption did not reach 66 percent in any region; however, this year more than two-thirds of respondents in nearly every region say their organizations are using AI. 1 Organizations based in Central and South America are the exception, with 58 percent of respondents working for organizations based in Central and South America reporting AI adoption. Looking by industry, the biggest increase in adoption can be found in professional services. 2 Includes respondents working for organizations focused on human resources, legal services, management consulting, market research, R&D, tax preparation, and training.

Also, responses suggest that companies are now using AI in more parts of the business. Half of respondents say their organizations have adopted AI in two or more business functions, up from less than a third of respondents in 2023 (Exhibit 2).

Gen AI adoption is most common in the functions where it can create the most value

Most respondents now report that their organizations—and they as individuals—are using gen AI. Sixty-five percent of respondents say their organizations are regularly using gen AI in at least one business function, up from one-third last year. The average organization using gen AI is doing so in two functions, most often in marketing and sales and in product and service development—two functions in which previous research  determined that gen AI adoption could generate the most value 3 “ The economic potential of generative AI: The next productivity frontier ,” McKinsey, June 14, 2023. —as well as in IT (Exhibit 3). The biggest increase from 2023 is found in marketing and sales, where reported adoption has more than doubled. Yet across functions, only two use cases, both within marketing and sales, are reported by 15 percent or more of respondents.

Gen AI also is weaving its way into respondents’ personal lives. Compared with 2023, respondents are much more likely to be using gen AI at work and even more likely to be using gen AI both at work and in their personal lives (Exhibit 4). The survey finds upticks in gen AI use across all regions, with the largest increases in Asia–Pacific and Greater China. Respondents at the highest seniority levels, meanwhile, show larger jumps in the use of gen Al tools for work and outside of work compared with their midlevel-management peers. Looking at specific industries, respondents working in energy and materials and in professional services report the largest increase in gen AI use.

Investments in gen AI and analytical AI are beginning to create value

The latest survey also shows how different industries are budgeting for gen AI. Responses suggest that, in many industries, organizations are about equally as likely to be investing more than 5 percent of their digital budgets in gen AI as they are in nongenerative, analytical-AI solutions (Exhibit 5). Yet in most industries, larger shares of respondents report that their organizations spend more than 20 percent on analytical AI than on gen AI. Looking ahead, most respondents—67 percent—expect their organizations to invest more in AI over the next three years.

Where are those investments paying off? For the first time, our latest survey explored the value created by gen AI use by business function. The function in which the largest share of respondents report seeing cost decreases is human resources. Respondents most commonly report meaningful revenue increases (of more than 5 percent) in supply chain and inventory management (Exhibit 6). For analytical AI, respondents most often report seeing cost benefits in service operations—in line with what we found last year —as well as meaningful revenue increases from AI use in marketing and sales.

Inaccuracy: The most recognized and experienced risk of gen AI use

As businesses begin to see the benefits of gen AI, they’re also recognizing the diverse risks associated with the technology. These can range from data management risks such as data privacy, bias, or intellectual property (IP) infringement to model management risks, which tend to focus on inaccurate output or lack of explainability. A third big risk category is security and incorrect use.

Respondents to the latest survey are more likely than they were last year to say their organizations consider inaccuracy and IP infringement to be relevant to their use of gen AI, and about half continue to view cybersecurity as a risk (Exhibit 7).

Conversely, respondents are less likely than they were last year to say their organizations consider workforce and labor displacement to be relevant risks and are not increasing efforts to mitigate them.

In fact, inaccuracy— which can affect use cases across the gen AI value chain , ranging from customer journeys and summarization to coding and creative content—is the only risk that respondents are significantly more likely than last year to say their organizations are actively working to mitigate.

Some organizations have already experienced negative consequences from the use of gen AI, with 44 percent of respondents saying their organizations have experienced at least one consequence (Exhibit 8). Respondents most often report inaccuracy as a risk that has affected their organizations, followed by cybersecurity and explainability.

Our previous research has found that there are several elements of governance that can help in scaling gen AI use responsibly, yet few respondents report having these risk-related practices in place. 4 “ Implementing generative AI with speed and safety ,” McKinsey Quarterly , March 13, 2024. For example, just 18 percent say their organizations have an enterprise-wide council or board with the authority to make decisions involving responsible AI governance, and only one-third say gen AI risk awareness and risk mitigation controls are required skill sets for technical talent.

Bringing gen AI capabilities to bear

The latest survey also sought to understand how, and how quickly, organizations are deploying these new gen AI tools. We have found three archetypes for implementing gen AI solutions : takers use off-the-shelf, publicly available solutions; shapers customize those tools with proprietary data and systems; and makers develop their own foundation models from scratch. 5 “ Technology’s generational moment with generative AI: A CIO and CTO guide ,” McKinsey, July 11, 2023. Across most industries, the survey results suggest that organizations are finding off-the-shelf offerings applicable to their business needs—though many are pursuing opportunities to customize models or even develop their own (Exhibit 9). About half of reported gen AI uses within respondents’ business functions are utilizing off-the-shelf, publicly available models or tools, with little or no customization. Respondents in energy and materials, technology, and media and telecommunications are more likely to report significant customization or tuning of publicly available models or developing their own proprietary models to address specific business needs.

Respondents most often report that their organizations required one to four months from the start of a project to put gen AI into production, though the time it takes varies by business function (Exhibit 10). It also depends upon the approach for acquiring those capabilities. Not surprisingly, reported uses of highly customized or proprietary models are 1.5 times more likely than off-the-shelf, publicly available models to take five months or more to implement.

Gen AI high performers are excelling despite facing challenges

Gen AI is a new technology, and organizations are still early in the journey of pursuing its opportunities and scaling it across functions. So it’s little surprise that only a small subset of respondents (46 out of 876) report that a meaningful share of their organizations’ EBIT can be attributed to their deployment of gen AI. Still, these gen AI leaders are worth examining closely. These, after all, are the early movers, who already attribute more than 10 percent of their organizations’ EBIT to their use of gen AI. Forty-two percent of these high performers say more than 20 percent of their EBIT is attributable to their use of nongenerative, analytical AI, and they span industries and regions—though most are at organizations with less than $1 billion in annual revenue. The AI-related practices at these organizations can offer guidance to those looking to create value from gen AI adoption at their own organizations.

To start, gen AI high performers are using gen AI in more business functions—an average of three functions, while others average two. They, like other organizations, are most likely to use gen AI in marketing and sales and product or service development, but they’re much more likely than others to use gen AI solutions in risk, legal, and compliance; in strategy and corporate finance; and in supply chain and inventory management. They’re more than three times as likely as others to be using gen AI in activities ranging from processing of accounting documents and risk assessment to R&D testing and pricing and promotions. While, overall, about half of reported gen AI applications within business functions are utilizing publicly available models or tools, gen AI high performers are less likely to use those off-the-shelf options than to either implement significantly customized versions of those tools or to develop their own proprietary foundation models.

What else are these high performers doing differently? For one thing, they are paying more attention to gen-AI-related risks. Perhaps because they are further along on their journeys, they are more likely than others to say their organizations have experienced every negative consequence from gen AI we asked about, from cybersecurity and personal privacy to explainability and IP infringement. Given that, they are more likely than others to report that their organizations consider those risks, as well as regulatory compliance, environmental impacts, and political stability, to be relevant to their gen AI use, and they say they take steps to mitigate more risks than others do.

Gen AI high performers are also much more likely to say their organizations follow a set of risk-related best practices (Exhibit 11). For example, they are nearly twice as likely as others to involve the legal function and embed risk reviews early on in the development of gen AI solutions—that is, to “ shift left .” They’re also much more likely than others to employ a wide range of other best practices, from strategy-related practices to those related to scaling.

In addition to experiencing the risks of gen AI adoption, high performers have encountered other challenges that can serve as warnings to others (Exhibit 12). Seventy percent say they have experienced difficulties with data, including defining processes for data governance, developing the ability to quickly integrate data into AI models, and an insufficient amount of training data, highlighting the essential role that data play in capturing value. High performers are also more likely than others to report experiencing challenges with their operating models, such as implementing agile ways of working and effective sprint performance management.

About the research

The online survey was in the field from February 22 to March 5, 2024, and garnered responses from 1,363 participants representing the full range of regions, industries, company sizes, functional specialties, and tenures. Of those respondents, 981 said their organizations had adopted AI in at least one business function, and 878 said their organizations were regularly using gen AI in at least one function. To adjust for differences in response rates, the data are weighted by the contribution of each respondent’s nation to global GDP.
