Chapter 1 - The French Revolution

In 1789, the people of Paris woke up and had started to break into government offices in search of arms. The people of the state hated the commander of the Bastille, and during the war, he was killed. Because the war had drained the country's finances, there was a tax increase, and most of the citizens couldn't make ends meet. The country became more divided during the 18th century. Around ninety per cent of the country was made up of peasants, and the rest ten per cent were the landowners.

Chapter 2 - Socialism in Europe and the Russian Revolution

To understand this chapter, students must learn about the French Revolution from Chapter 1. It is essential to understand the french revolution as it sets the basis for socialism in Europe. This chapter differentiates between liberals, radicals and conservatives. The chapter explains how socialism in Europe brought in Industrial and social change by covering the Industrial Revolutions. It talked about how business owners would exploit their workers by underpaying them and making them work for long hours without any benefits. The chapter then covers how socialism started to come to Europe with new thinkers like Karl Marx and Louis Blanc. The chapter also covers the Russian empire from 1914, its economy and society and the February revolution in Petrograd. 

Chapter 3 - Nazism and the Rise of Hitler

This chapter helps students understand how Nazism rose and the cause for it. Because of the first World War, most of Europe's finances were drained. Germany then tried to occupy Belgium and France because of strong allies with America, Germany lost. The great depression and political radicalism in Europe soon gave rise to Hitler. The chapter gives a brief history of Hitler's rise to power and how the country's democracy was broken. The chapter then goes on to cover the rise of Nazism throughout Europe and the second world war. It also covers essential topics like how the youth were affected during Nazism and how propaganda was spread. 

Chapter 4 - Forest Society and Colonialism 

Here in this chapter, students will learn about how massive deforestation paved the way for urbanisation. It covers how early colonialism tried to improve land, sleepers on tracks and the rise of plantations around the world. The chapters cover how the commercialisation of forests was done and how property systems were introduced into India by the British. The rise of commercial forestry affected so many aspects of life such as the people, cultivation of crops and who could hunt. The chapter then goes on to discuss the rebellions in the forest and the first transformations in Java, which included deforestation, war and new developments in forestry.

Chapter 5 - Pastoralists in the Moderns World

This chapter discusses Nomadic pastoralists and how colonialism has affected their lives and what it does to the people. This chapter looks extensively at the effect of colonialism in India and Africa. There are explanations of the direct relations between colonialism and pastoral life.  The chapters show how pastoralists coped with changes and how colonialism affected their lives.

This is the second scheduled work in the 9th week of physics class 9. The second determining assignment has been questioned from the first chapter of the physics subject. 1. Describe the circumstances leading to the outbreak of revolutionary protest in France.

When King Louis XVI was anointed as the new king, he found an empty treasury. Long years of war had drained the financial resources of France. On top of this, there was the cost of maintaining an extravagant court at the Palace of Versailles. France had helped the thirteen American colonies gain their independence from their common enemy, Britain. The war added more than a billion lives to a debt that had already risen to more than 2 billion lives. Lenders who gave credit began to charge 10 per cent interest on loans. So the French Government had to spend an increasing percentage of its budget on interest payments alone. To meet its regular expenses, such as cost of maintaining an army, the court, governmental offices and Universities were increasingly becoming difficult. Raising taxes did not suffice, because the French society was divided into 3 estates and only the 3rd estate had to pay taxes. The 1st estate and the 2nd estate did not pay any taxes. The population of France was also growing massively. This led to a rapid increase in the demand for food grains. Production of grains could not keep pace with demand. So the price of bread, which was the staple diet of the majority rose rapidly. Most workers were employed as labourers in workshops, whose owner fixed their wages. But the wages did not keep pace with the rise in prices. So the gap between the rich and the poor widened. All these factors led to the outbreak of the French Revolution.

2. Which groups of French society benefited from the revolution? Which groups were forced to relinquish power? Which sections of society would have been disappointed with the outcome of the revolution?

French society was divided into 3 estates. The third estate benefitted the most. The third estate consisted of Peasants, artisans, Small peasants, landless labour, servants, big businessmen, merchants, court officials, lawyers etc. The groups that were forced to relinquish power were the people belonging to the 1st and 2nd estate. These people had enjoyed certain privileges by birth. With the revolution, the people in 1st and 2nd estate lost their privileges. Because inequality was one of the root causes of the revolution, the revolution tried to bring equality to society.

3. Describe the legacy of the French Revolution for the peoples of the world during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

The ideas of liberty and democratic rights are the most important legacies of the French revolution. These spread from France to the rest of Europe during the nineteenth century, where feudal systems were abolished. Colonised people reworked the idea of freedom from bondage into their movements to create a sovereign nation-state. Tipu Sultan and Ram Mohan Roy are two examples of individuals who responded to the ideas originating from Revolutionary France.

4. Draw up a list of democratic rights we enjoy today whose origins could be traced to the French Revolution.

The list of democratic rights are

• Freedom of speech
• Freedom of expression
• Freedom of press
• Abolition of censorship
• Right to vote
• Abolition of slavery
• Right to liberty
• Right to property
• Right to security
• Right to education
• Divorce laws

5. Would you agree with the view that the message of universal rights was beset with contradictions? Explain.

Though it says ‘Universal Rights’, women were unfortunately left out from the basic rights that were promised. They did not have equal rights that men enjoyed. They did not have the right to liberty, property, security and above all, the resistance to oppression. In the formulation of laws, women did not have any representation. Women were not entitled to all the honours and public employment, according to their abilities.

6. How would you explain the rise of Napoleon?

Napoleon Bonaparte crowned himself Emperor of France. He started conquering neighbouring countries by waging wars against them. He saw himself as a moderniser of Europe. He introduced many laws, such as the protection of private property and a uniform system of weights and measures provided by the decimal system. Many of his measures carried the revolutionary ideas of liberty and modern laws to the other parts of Europe. This had a positive impact on people long after he was dethroned as an emperor when he was finally defeated in the Battle of Waterloo.

গ্রিক সভ্যতা

ভূমিকাঃ পৃথিবী সৃষ্টির আদি থেকে নানা উত্থান-পতনের মানব সভ্যতা আজ এই পর্যায়ে এসে পৌঁছেছে। আর এ কারণে মানব সভ্যতার বিকাশ বিশ্বের বিভিন্ন স্থানে বিভিন্ন সময়ে ঘটেছে। আজ থেকে আনুমানিক প্রায় দশ হাজার বছর পূর্বে শিকারি সমাজ থেকে ভিত্তিক সমাজ এর উদ্ভব ঘটে। মাত্র ছয় থেকে সাত হাজার বছর পূর্বে নগরকেন্দ্রিক সভ্যতা সৃষ্টি করে। কৃষিভিত্তিক সমাজ গড়ে ওঠার ফলে কৃষিজীবী, পশুপালন ও শিকারি এ দুই ভাগে মানব সমাজ বিভক্ত হয়ে পড়ে। ফলে কৃষক ও পশুপালক সমাজের মানুষেরা বহুবিধ উন্নত কর্মকৌশল আবিষ্কার করতে থাকে এবং মানুষ স্থায়ীভাবে গ্রামে বসবাসও শুরু করে । সকল আবিষ্কার একের পর এক ঘটেছিল পশ্চিম এশিয়া, ভূমধ্যসাগরের কোলঘেঁষে পূর্ব ইউরােপ ও তৎসংলগ্ন উত্তর আফ্রিকায়। যার ফলে পশ্চিম এশিয়ায় মেসােপটেমিয়া পূর্ব ইউরােপের নিম্ন বলকান অঞ্চল ও মিশরের প্রথম নগরকেন্দ্রিক সভ্যতা উদ্ভব ও বিকাশ ঘটে। আধুনিক মানব সমাজ এ সকল সভ্যতার নিকট ঋণী।

গ্রিক সভ্যতা গ্রিক সভ্যতার উৎপত্তি স্থলঃ ইউরােপ মহাদেশের গ্রিক রাষ্ট্রের অন্তর্গত প্রাচীন কয়েকটি শহরকে কেন্দ্র করে গ্রীক সভ্যতার উদ্ভব ঘটে।বলকান উপকূলের দক্ষিণাংশ অবস্থিত গ্রিক প্রায় পাচঁ হাজার বর্গমাইল ব্যাপী বিস্তৃত। ভূ-প্রকৃতি এই দেশটিকে তিনভাগে বিভক্ত করে দিয়েছে,দক্ষিণ গ্রীস, মধ্য গ্রীস ও উত্তর গ্রীস। মেসিডােনিয়ান অধিপতি আলেকজান্ডারের শাসনামলে সভ্যতা সীমা ছাড়িয়ে আধুনিক মিশর, ইসরাইল,ফিলিস্তিন, লেবানন, সিরিয়া, ইরাক ও ইরান হয়ে ভারত বর্ষ পর্যন্ত বিস্তৃত হয়েছিল।

গ্রীকদের রাজনৈতিক ইতিহাসঃ প্রাচীন গ্রিক সমাজের বিশেষত্ব দাসপ্রথা, গ্রিকদের আগে আর কোন সমাজই দাসত্বের বুনিয়াদে উপরে গড়ে উঠে। নাই ।গ্রীকদের আদি বাসস্থান গ্রিসে নয়। গ্রিসে আসার পূর্বে তারা থিসালি ও এপিরাসে বাস করত। গ্রীক সভ্যতার সূচনা কাল থেকে পতন পর্যন্ত এর রাজনৈতিক অবস্থা পর্যালােচনা করে, এ সভ্যতা কে দুই ভাগে ভাগ করা যায়। যথাঃ

১। হেলেনিক যুগ। ২। হেলেনিস্টিক যুগ

গ্রীক দর্শন ও সংস্কৃতিঃ পৃথিবীব্যাপী সভ্যতার ইতিহাসে গ্রীক দর্শন গােটা বিশ্ব দর্শন ও সভ্যতাকে প্রভাবিত করেছে। জ্ঞানের জগতে যে সকল গ্রিক কবি দার্শনিক জ্ঞানের আলােক বর্তিকা বিতরণ করেছেন তাদের মধ্যে বিশ্ব বিখ্যাত শিক্ষাগুরু সক্রেটিস। সক্রেটিসের ছাত্র প্লেটো ও প্লেটো এর ছাত্র এরিস্টোটল বিশেষভাবে উল্লেখযােগ্য। গ্রীক দার্শনিকদের যুক্তি,ব্যাখ্যা ও দর্শন জগতকে সমৃদ্ধশালী করে। সকল যুক্তি বাদী দার্শনিকদের সফিস্ট বলা হয় ।গ্রীক দর্শনে অন্যতম দার্শনিক সক্রেটিস নিজের সত্য প্রকাশে অনড় থেকে শাসকের নির্দেশে বিষপান করে মৃত্যুবরণ করেন । তার বিখ্যাত উক্তি নিজেকে জানাে। তার শিষ্য প্লেটো এবং প্লেটো শিষ্য অ্যারিস্টোটলের সর্বকালের বিখ্যাত দার্শনিক ছিলেন। প্লেটোর বিখ্যাত গ্রন্থ। সিম্পােজিয়াম রিপাবলিক এবং লজ প্রভৃতি। এরিস্টটলের বিখ্যাত গ্রন্থ লজিক, ফিজিকস এবং পলিটিক্স। পলিটিক্স গ্রন্থে রাজনীতি, গণতন্ত্র বিষয়ে মতামত তুলে ধরা হয়েছে। প্লেটোর বিখ্যাত গ্রন্থ দি রিপাবলিক। আর বিশ্ববিজেত্য আলেকজান্ডার নিজেও একজন দার্শনিক ও জ্ঞানী ব্যক্তি ছিলেন। তার শিক্ষক ছিলেন দার্শনিক প্লেটো।

গ্রিক সাহিত্যঃ হােমারের যুগে গ্রিক সাহিত্যের চূড়ান্ত বিকাশ ঘটে। যদিও হােমারের সাহিত্য নিয়ে আলােচনা হয়েছে। হােমারের মহাকাব্য ইলিয়াড ও ওডিসিতে গ্রীকদের বীরত্বের কাহিনী বর্ণিত হয়েছে। হােমারিকযুগের পরে গ্রিক সমাজে গীতিকাব্য ও শােক গাথার আবির্ভাব ঘটে। এই সকল শােক গাথায় ব্যক্তিগত প্রণয় কাহিনীর বিবরণ রয়েছে। সােলােন ছিলেন একজন বিখ্যাত গীতিকাব্য রচয়িতা। এছাড়া বিখ্যাত নাট্যকার ছিলেন এসকাইলাস, সােফোক্লিস, ইউরিপিডিস প্রমুখ। ১ // ১

 গ্রিক ইতিহাসঃ ইতিহাসের জনক ছিলেন গ্রীসের বিখ্যাত ঐতিহাসিক হেরােডােটাস (৪৮৪-৪২৫খ্রিষ্টপূর্ব) ইতিহাস শব্দের ইংরেজি প্রতিশব্দ হিস্ট্রি শব্দটি গ্রিক ভাষার শব্দ। তিনি মিশর, পারস্য ও ইতালি ভ্রমণ করে ইতিহাসের বিভিন্ন উপাদান ও তথ্য সংগ্রহ করেন। এছাড়া জেনােফার নামে এক ব্যক্তি ইতিহাস সংগ্রহে খ্যাতি অর্জন করেন। গ্রিক বিজ্ঞান বিজ্ঞান সাধনায় হেলেনিস্টিক যুগেও অসাধারণ উৎকর্ষ সাধিত হয়। সেসময় ইতিহাস গবেষণায় পলিবিয়াস, জ্যোতির্বিদ্যায় অ্যারিস্টোটল ও হিপারকাস, গণিতে বিখ্যাত পিথাগােরাস ও ইউক্লিড প্রমুখ মুনিষীগণ জ্ঞান-বিজ্ঞানের চর্চা খ্যাতি অর্জন করেছিলেন।

রােমান সভ্যতা

রােমান সভ্যতার উৎপত্তিঃ গ্রীক সভ্যতার সমসাময়িক রােমান সভ্যতা হেলেনিক ও হেলেনিস্টিক সভ্যতার অনেক সংস্কৃতি গ্রহণ করেছে। ঐতিহাসিকদের ধারণা, ৭৫৩ খ্রিস্টপূর্বাব্দে রােম নগরী প্রতিষ্ঠিত রাজা রােমুলাস এর নামানুসারে রােম নগরীর নামকরণ করা হয়। টাইবার নদীর তীরে অবস্থিত প্রাচীন রােমান নগরীকে ‘বিশ্বের রাজধানী’ বলা হয়। কারণ রােমনগরীর সঙ্গে ইউরােপ, আফ্রিকা ও এশিয়া মহাদেশের বিস্তৃত যােগাযােগ ছিল। রােমিও সমাজ ও সংস্কৃতির প্রভাব ভূমধ্যসাগরের অঞ্চলসহ উত্তর ব্রিটেন, জার্মানি, পূর্বে মেসােপটেমিয়া এবং দক্ষিনে মিশর ও লিবিয়া এ পর্যন্ত বিস্তৃত ছিল। জ্ঞান-বিজ্ঞানের রােমানদের অবদান

রােমিও সাহিত্যঃ সাহিত্যের প্রতিটি শাখায় রােমানরা গ্রিকদের অনুকরণে রচনা করেন। প্লুটাক ১২ টি নাটকের মাধ্যমে রােমের আচরণ ও কৃষ্টির আলােকপাত করেন। রােমিও সাহিত্যে নাটকের ভূমিকা ছিল তাৎপর্যপূর্ণ। গীতিকাব্যকার ক্যাটুলাস ছিলেন খুবই জনপ্রিয়। এছাড়া সিসিরাে এবং ভার্জিল সাহিত্যচর্চায় খ্যাতি অর্জন করেন।

 রােমান ধর্মঃ তাদের গৃহ ছিল ধর্ম ও দেবদেবীর আখড়া। প্রত্যেক গৃহে জেনাস নামে একজন তত্ত্বাবধায়ক দেবতা ছিল ।এছাড়া ভেস্তা আগুনের দেবতা,সাটান ফসলের দেবতা, জুনাে গর্ভবতী হওয়ার দেবতা,নেপচুন সাগরের দেবতা, ভেনাস প্রেমের দেবতা,জুপিটার আকাশের দেবতা ছিল।

রােমান দর্শনঃ রােমানরা দর্শনের ক্ষেত্রেও গ্রিক প্রভাব মুক্ত হতে পারেনি। গ্রীক দর্শন এর উপর ভিত্তি করে রােমান দর্শনের সূত্রপাত। বিশ্ব সভ্যতার রােমান দার্শনিকদের অবদান অপরিসীম। পশ্চিমের সক্রেটিস নামে কেটো খ্যাত ছিলেন আদি রােমান দার্শনিক। তার মতে, গ্রীক সভ্যতা নয়, রােমান সভ্যতাই সভ্য পৃথিবীতে প্রাধান্য বিস্তার করবে। তিনি সক্রেটিসের যুক্তি জ্ঞান ও নৈতিকতা শৃঙ্খলা ভক্ত ছিলেন।

রােমান সাম্রাজ্যের পতনঃ খৃষ্টপূর্ব দ্বিতীয় শতকের শেষের দিকেইতালি”EM কৃষকেরা সর্বস্বান্ত হয়ে পড়ে। রােম এবং অন্যান্য বড় শহরগুলােতে সবহারা দল ভিড় করে। রােমের দাসমালিকরা গর্বের সঙ্গে বলতাে রােমের ক্ষমতা চিরস্থায়ী। তাদের শক্তিমান রক্ষীবাহিনীর বিশাল সেনাবাহিনী অপরাজেয় কিন্তু সে শক্তি বেশিদিন স্থায়ী হয়নি। জার্মান ও পারসিকরা একেকটি রােমান সাম্রাজ্য প্রদেশ গুলি দখল করতে থাকে। যারা কয়েক শতাব্দী ব্যাপী অন্যদের দাস বানিয়েছে আজ তারাই দাসে পরিণত হয়।
