Event Management Dissertation Example: A Case Study

Topic: Sustainability in Event Management: Practices and Challenges

This study explores the current practices and challenges of sustainability in event management. The research methodology includes a comprehensive literature review and semi-structured interviews with event management professionals. The study finds a growing awareness and commitment to sustainability in event management, with many events adopting sustainable practices such as waste reduction, energy conservation, and carbon offsetting. However, there are still significant challenges, including the lack of consensus on sustainable event management, the difficulty of measuring the impact of sustainability initiatives, and the cost and availability of sustainable products and services. The study concludes with recommendations for improving sustainability practices in event management, including clearer guidelines and standards, greater collaboration and knowledge-sharing among industry stakeholders, and a focus on long-term sustainability goals rather than short-term gains.

Literature Review

Sustainability is an important concept in event management to reduce events' negative environmental and social impact. Current practices include waste reduction, energy conservation, water conservation, and carbon offsetting. Studies show that sustainable practices positively impact the environment and society, such as reducing carbon emissions, waste, and water consumption in the Olympic Games Ristic et al. (2020). Additionally, sustainable practices find to positively impact the image and reputation of event organisers (Andereck et al., 2011). Event managers are increasingly adopting sustainable practices to reduce the negative impact of events on the environment and society. However, there are several challenges that need to be addressed to improve sustainability in event management. These include the lack of consensus on sustainable event management, the difficulty of measuring the impact of sustainability initiatives, and the availability and cost of sustainable products and services. Addressing these challenges will require collaboration among industry stakeholders, the development of clear guidelines and standards, and focusing on long-term sustainability goals.

Methodology

The research design for this study is a mixed-methods approach that includes a comprehensive literature review and semi-structured interviews with event management professionals. Use two primary methods for collecting data: literature review and semi-structured interviews. We examine academic databases, industry publications, and government reports during the literature review. The data collected from the literature review and the semi-structured interviews use a thematic analysis approach. Ethical considerations were taken into account throughout the research process, including informed consent, confidentiality, anonymity, and following ethical guidelines for research involving human subjects.

Conclusion

This study explores sustainability's current practices and challenges in event management, including waste reduction, energy conservation, water conservation, and carbon offsetting. Challenges include a lack of consensus on sustainable event management. They also include the difficulty of measuring the impact of sustainability initiatives and the availability and cost of sustainable products and services. Collaboration among industry stakeholders is necessary, and clear guidelines and standards are needed for sustainable event management. Future research explores innovative and effective sustainable practices for event managers.

Final Thought

Writing an expertly researched dissertation on event management requires careful planning, thorough research, and effective writing. To ensure the validity and reliability of the research, appropriate research methodologies and data collection methods should be selected. Strong writing skills and effective communication are essential for the dissertation's success. Despite the potential benefits of contributing to event management, gaining valuable research skills, and demonstrating expertise in the field, writing an expertly researched dissertation on event management is worthwhile.

Important Notes:

As a management student looking to get good grades, it is essential to develop new ideas and experiment with existing management theories – i.e., to add value and interest to your research topic.

The management field is vast and interrelated to many other academic disciplines like operations management , business , business administration , MBA , human resource management and more. That is why creating a management dissertation topic that is particular, sound, and actually solves a practical problem that may be rampant in the field is imperative.

We can’t stress how important it is to develop a logical research topic based on your entire research. There are several significant downfalls to getting your topic wrong; your supervisor may not be interested in working on it, the topic has no academic creditability, the research may not make logical sense, there is a possibility that the study is not viable.

This impacts your time and efforts in writing your dissertation , as you may end up in the cycle of rejection at the initial stage of the dissertation. That is why we recommend reviewing existing research to develop a topic, taking advice from your supervisor, and even asking for help in this particular stage of your dissertation.

Keeping our advice in mind while developing a research topic will allow you to pick one of the best management dissertation topics that fulfil your requirement of writing a research paper and adds to the body of knowledge.

Therefore, it is recommended that when finalizing your dissertation topic, you read recently published literature to identify gaps in the research that you may help fill.

Remember- dissertation topics need to be unique, solve an identified problem, be logical, and be practically implemented. Please look at some of our sample management dissertation topics to get an idea for your own dissertation.

Expert advice for second-year master’s students in HEPM – Part II

Hello dear readers, welcome to the second part of our blog series, a continuation of Part I , featuring an engaging interview with Assoc. Professor Mathilde Sengoelge. In this part, Mathilde shares her expert advice specifically directed towards second-year master’s students in HEPM and prospective students. This part of the series focuses on crucial topics such as thesis guidance, future career prospects, and general advice to help navigate our academic and professional journey.

Take a five-minute break, enjoy a walk in nature, or bask in the sun while you read this blog. Reflect on your perspective and feel free to leave a comment or question below.

Thesis guidance

Selecting a thesis topic is a significant decision in our academic pathway. Mathilde emphasised the importance of finding a supervisor who matches the specific thesis topic well. “I would focus on finding a supervisor who is a good match, as being more important than the thesis topic”. Being open to exploration and curiosity is key, even if it means choosing a qualitative thesis to diversify your experience, given the quantitative focus of much of the coursework.

Additionally, some thesis topics may have a higher chance of being published, which could be an important consideration for some students. “If publication matters to you, get that wish out early when choosing projects to see if the potential supervisor thinks the project would have a chance at submission to a journal,” Mathilde suggests.

Her advice when it comes to choosing between an academic setting and an industry setting for the thesis –

Academic setting

  • Pros: The supervisor is usually familiar with the KI thesis requirements and timeline, making it easier to manage and ensuring the project fits well within academic expectations. Additionally, the supervisor may have experience in publishing on the topic, which can be advantageous if you aim for your thesis to be published.
  • Cons: There is usually no exposure to a real-world setting, which can limit practical experience and networking opportunities.

Industry setting

  • Pros: It is exciting to gain exposure to a real-world setting and expand your network within the industry. This experience can provide valuable practical insights and connections that can benefit your future career.
  • Cons: The external supervisor may not be familiar with the KI thesis requirements or timeline, which can lead to unrealistic expectations and requests for too much work in a short time frame due to their eagerness to involve you in the project.

Ensuring a good match with supervisors and communicating goals and expectations will be crucial to a successful thesis experience.

Future career prospects

As we look ahead to our careers in health economics, policy, and management, it’s essential to understand the emerging trends and opportunities in the field. Mathilde highlights the increasing need for flexibility and adaptability. “I believe an emerging trend in the field is that we cannot just focus on one topic like in the past. Students graduating need to be more flexible and adaptable as our environment changes quickly,” she explains. This shift means that being well-rounded and open to various aspects of the field can significantly enhance the career prospects.

To best position yourself for success after graduation, Mathilde recommends expanding knowledge and skills beyond the traditional curriculum. One resource she suggests is Brené Brown’s book, “Dare to Lead. ” This book focuses on leadership, vulnerability, and resilience—qualities that are increasingly important in today’s dynamic work environment. By cultivating these traits, you can better navigate the complexities of your future career and stand out in a competitive job market.

Additionally, staying updated with the latest research, trends, and innovations in health economics, policy, and management is important. Engaging with professional networks, attending conferences, and participating in workshops can provide valuable experience and connections that will help you stay ahead of the curve.

General advice

Mathilde offers two key pieces of advice that can guide us effectively.

Soft skills vs. hard skills – When asked about the one piece of advice she wishes she had received as a student, Mathilde emphasized the importance of balancing soft skills with hard skills. “The soft skills are just as important as the hard skills, so ensure you have growth in both areas”. While technical expertise and knowledge are crucial, developing interpersonal skills, communication abilities, and emotional intelligence are equally important. These soft skills can enhance your ability to work effectively in teams, lead projects, and navigate complex professional environments.

Maintaining a healthy work-life balance – Balancing work and personal life is essential for long-term success and well-being. Mathilde shares her perspective on maintaining this balance. “Keep in mind it is a lifelong learning journey, and it is important to have that growth mindset, that you have to exit your comfort zone in order to get to the learning zone,” she says. Being open to new experiences, challenges, and continuous improvement are important. It also involves recognizing the importance of self-care and setting boundaries to ensure that you can sustain your energy and enthusiasm over the long term.

A final tip

A final tip from Mathilde:- when communicating your desires and goals to colleagues, employers, or professors, be sure to provide the full picture. Include specifics such as your particular focus or field (e.g., qualitative or quantitative research, health economic modelling), your availability (start and end dates), whether you are looking for full-time or part-time opportunities and your preference for paid or unpaid positions. Don’t forget to attach a CV (preferably 2 pages)

So here it is, the full interview with our esteemed Assoc. Professor Mathilde. I hope you enjoyed it and found the advice and recommendations valuable. Enjoy your summer and let me know your thoughts about these blogs by writing in the comments below.

Until I come back with another blog covering summer adventures as a student, have a great summer break!

New dissertation grants expand global research support

The newly established penn global dissertation grants program provides as much as $8,000 in funding to each of 11 ph.d. candidates to enhance global components in their research..

A glass globe sitting on a woodend table shows north and south America.

Penn Global has announced the first recipients of the newly established Penn Global Dissertation Grants program , providing as much as $8,000 each in funding to 11 Ph.D. students across four schools

With dissertations ranging from examinations of artificial intelligence and computational immunology in Vietnam to a look at the intersection of women, food, and freedom in the Dominican Republic, the recipients will use the funds to enhance global components in their dissertation research.

A main priority for Penn Global under its third strategic framework is to develop initiatives that support graduate and professional research with global dimensions. Introducing the Penn Global Dissertation Grants, which will be offered annually, augments global opportunities for graduate and professional students by expanding the scope of Penn Global’s research support.

“This program is the best example of how our strategic plan is responsive to the needs of the University community,” says Amy Gadsden , associate vice provost for global initiatives. “When Vice Provost for Global Initiatives Zeke Emanuel and I met with stakeholders across campus last year to further refine the strategic plan, a discussion emerged among faculty about the need to address a growing gap in support for graduate and professional students pursuing international research, particularly in the humanities and social sciences. It was clear that what we needed was a funding mechanism to support international dissertation research. We ran with this idea and, in close partnership with the Office of the Vice Provost for Education, established the Penn Global Dissertation Grants.”

“It was important for our office to get behind this initiative,” says Karen Detlefsen, Vice Provost for Education. “It met a real need to provide more University support for graduate work that has potential to extend well beyond the boundaries of any discipline. The research many of our students are doing in a global context is inspiring.”

This program is intended to harness the power of Penn’s graduate student community to enhance the University’s global engagement.

“Graduate students are on the cutting edge of research, but finding support for global inquiry can be difficult,” Gadsden says. “This program ensures that Penn’s graduates students can stay on the cutting edge of their fields and do deeply immersive work to advance new knowledge.”

The program offers two tracks for Ph.D. students seeking to incorporate global dimensions into their work: global exploration and global enhancement. Global exploration applicants are still in the development stages of their dissertation and will use this program’s resources to explore and engage global components for their dissertation research. Global enhancement applicants already include a core global focus to their dissertation and will use this program’s resources to broaden and deepen their research, ideally leveraging their dissertation toward future career opportunities in global leadership.

In the School of Arts & Sciences , recipients are Juan Arboleda, a history Ph.D. student whose research focuses on Brazil and Colombia; Adwaita Banerjee, an anthropology Ph.D. student whose research focuses on India; Tayeba Batool, an anthropology Ph.D. student whose research focuses on Pakistan; Nursyazwani Binte Jamaludin, an anthropology Ph.D. student whose research focuses on Myanmar; Jalen Chang, a history of art Ph.D. student whose research focuses on France, Oceania, and New Caledonia; Bonnie Maldonado, a Ph.D. student in Africana studies whose research focuses on the Dominican Republic; Taylor Prescott, a history Ph.D. student whose research focuses on Sierra Leone; and Alexandra Zborovsky a history Ph.D. student whose research focuses on Russia, Ukraine, the Netherlands, and Israel.

In the Perelman School of Medicine , the recipient is Van Truong, whose focus is on genomics and computational biology in Vietnam. In the Annenberg School for Communication , the recipient is Adetobi Moses, whose research focuses on Ghana. In the Weitzman School of Design, the recipient is Hui Tian, whose research focuses on China.

The Penn Global Dissertation Grant program will also offer a platform for these students to share their work and research experience with the broader Penn community. One stipulation of the program is developing individualized post-award commitment plans. The inaugural cohort of awardees is currently finalizing their own plans, which may include Penn undergraduate mentorship programs, panel discussions on their research topics and outcomes, and other forms of publishable multimedia.

Currently enrolled Penn Ph.D. students from all Penn Schools and disciplines, including the humanities, social sciences, and STEM fields, may apply. Additional program information is available at https://global.upenn.edu/global-initiatives/penn-global-dissertation-grants .

Anne Beeman and Laura Jone

Laura Jones and Anne Beeman will present “Rooted in Restoration: Collaborative Sagebrush Management Practices and Strategies.” The event begins at 5:30 p.m. with a barbecue, followed by a 6:30 p.m. seminar. The events are free and open to the public, although a $10 donation is suggested.

Jones is the vegetation ecology and management branch chief in Grand Teton National Park, and Beeman is a botany graduate student in UW’s College of Agriculture, Life Sciences and Natural Resources.

The two speakers note that sagebrush habitat restoration is an essential land management strategy for a biome that has shrunk to half its original area across the American West. Grand Teton National Park officials have restored 1,500 acres of sagebrush habitat since 2009, learning lessons and adapting practices along the way.

Park ecologists have collaborated with UW researchers to understand drivers of restoration outcomes and techniques to optimize success. An evaluation of data showed that, although native grasses were establishing well, forb and shrub diversity and cover were low. Climate year, soil type and seed mix influenced plant community composition, compelling Grand Teton restoration practitioners to consider which approaches to modify.

tractor pulling equipment

“We hypothesize that forb-dominated seed mixes alongside tilled treatments will result in optimal species diversity and shrub establishment,” they say. “These results will guide future restoration efforts and management techniques within Grand Teton National Park.”

Jones, who has been at the park the last five years, served in resource manager, ecologist and planner roles at Colorado National Monument, Yosemite National Park and Boulder County Parks and Open Space. She received her Master of Science in biology, studying estuarine restoration at the University of Southern Maine. Her work focuses on ecological restoration and embraces opportunities to integrate new science and research to uncover better management strategies.

Beeman is studying sagebrush restoration management strategies in the park, specifically observing how tilling treatments and seed mix ratios affect shrub establishment and species diversity. She attended Saint Louis University as an undergraduate and has since conducted vegetation research in a variety of ecosystems, including Great Basin cold desert communities, eastern Oregon riparian communities and southeastern Alaska temperate rainforest communities.

About the University of Wyoming-National Park Service Research Station

The research station, a cooperative effort between UW and the NPS for the past 71 years, provides a base for university faculty members and government scientists from around the world to conduct research in the diverse aquatic and terrestrial environments of Grand Teton National Park and the greater Yellowstone area. The research station is located on the AMK Ranch historic district on a peninsula extending into Jackson Lake near Leeks Marina.

About the Harlow Summer Seminar Series

Formerly called the AMK Ranch Talk Series, the Harlow program is named after retired UW Department of Zoology and Physiology Professor Hank Harlow, who helped make the UW-NPS Research Station a significant center for research and community outreach. Harlow began the popular weekly public seminars during the summer months. This summer’s weekly programs are from June 20-Aug. 8.

Build a Corporate Culture That Works

dissertation topics in events management

There’s a widespread understanding that managing corporate culture is key to business success. Yet few companies articulate their culture in such a way that the words become an organizational reality that molds employee behavior as intended.

All too often a culture is described as a set of anodyne norms, principles, or values, which do not offer decision-makers guidance on how to make difficult choices when faced with conflicting but equally defensible courses of action.

The trick to making a desired culture come alive is to debate and articulate it using dilemmas. If you identify the tough dilemmas your employees routinely face and clearly state how they should be resolved—“In this company, when we come across this dilemma, we turn left”—then your desired culture will take root and influence the behavior of the team.

To develop a culture that works, follow six rules: Ground your culture in the dilemmas you are likely to confront, dilemma-test your values, communicate your values in colorful terms, hire people who fit, let culture drive strategy, and know when to pull back from a value statement.

Start by thinking about the dilemmas your people will face.

Idea in Brief

The problem.

There’s a widespread understanding that managing corporate culture is key to business success. Yet few companies articulate their corporate culture in such a way that the words become an organizational reality that molds employee behavior as intended.

What Usually Happens

How to fix it.

Follow six rules: Ground your culture in the dilemmas you are likely to confront, dilemma-test your values, communicate your values in colorful terms, hire people who fit, let culture drive strategy, and know when to pull back from a value.

At the beginning of my career, I worked for the health-care-software specialist HBOC. One day, a woman from human resources came into the cafeteria with a roll of tape and began sticking posters on the walls. They proclaimed in royal blue the company’s values: “Transparency, Respect, Integrity, Honesty.” The next day we received wallet-sized plastic cards with the same words and were asked to memorize them so that we could incorporate them into our actions. The following year, when management was indicted on 17 counts of conspiracy and fraud, we learned what the company’s values really were.

Seminole County emergency leaders host first 'Hurricane Action Day' event

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. — Seminole County’s Office of Emergency Management hosted its inaugural Hurricane Action Day event Saturday, providing residents with crucial information to prepare for the hurricane season.

What You Need To Know

Seminole county’s office of emergency management hosted its inaugural hurricane action day event saturday over 100 people from nonprofits and faith-based organizations participated in the event hurricane action day offered hands-on safety training, including proper chainsaw and generator usage the event also featured presentations from guest speakers on topics like mental health during disasters and legal services specific to disaster crises.

With hurricane season already underway, 25 members from Action Church attended — easily identifiable in their red shirts — eager to learn how they can better assist the community, especially post-disaster. One of the first to greet attendees with a smile was church member and central outreach coordinator, Tina Commesso.

“We believe in serving the community,” she said. “We have around 300 members actively engaged weekly, serving those in need through various ministries and nonprofits. Today, many of our members are here to learn how to serve our community better in the event of a national disaster.”

Over 100 people from nonprofits and faith-based organizations participated in the event. Commesso highlighted the significance of their presence.

“We prioritize taking care of our families, but beyond that, we aim to serve the community. The more hands and educated individuals involved, the better we can support Central Florida community families,” said Commesso.

Hurricane Action Day offered hands-on safety training, including proper chainsaw and generator usage. Alan Harris, Seminole County Emergency Operations Manager, stressed the importance of safety.

“Post-hurricane, we see many injuries from improper chainsaw and generator use, and unsafe debris handling around power lines. We want to ensure people perform these tasks safely, so our first responders can focus solely on the hurricane response,” he said.

Commesso further noted that community support extends beyond physical labor: it’s a labor of love.

“When people are in need, we believe in stepping up. We hope Action Church is the first call to help those in need,” said Commesso.

The event also featured presentations from guest speakers on topics like mental health during disasters and legal services specific to disaster crises. Funded by the American Red Cross Long Term Recovery Capacity Building Grant, awarded to the county post-Hurricane Ian, the event aimed to enhance the capabilities of Seminole H.E.A.R.T., a volunteer organization dedicated to assisting those in need during declared disasters.

This study illustrates the spatio-temporal dynamics of urban growth and land use changes in Samara city, Russia from 1975 to 2015. Landsat satellite imageries of five different time periods from 1975 to 2015 were acquired and quantify the changes with the help of ArcGIS 10.1 Software. By applying classification methods to the satellite images four main types of land use were extracted: water, built-up, forest and grassland. Then, the area coverage for all the land use types at different points in time were measured and coupled with population data. The results demonstrate that, over the entire study period, population was increased from 1146 thousand people to 1244 thousand from 1975 to 1990 but later on first reduce and then increase again, now 1173 thousand population. Builtup area is also change according to population. The present study revealed an increase in built-up by 37.01% from 1975 to 1995, than reduce -88.83% till 2005 and an increase by 39.16% from 2005 to 2015, along w...

Land use/Cover Change in Russia within the context of global challenges. The paper presents the results of a research project on Land Use/Cover Change (LUCC) in Russia in relations with global problems (climate change, environment and biodiversity degradation). The research was carried out at the Faculty of Geography, Moscow State University on the basis of the combination of remote sensing and in-field data of different spatial and temporal resolution. The original methodology of present-day landscape interpretation for land cover change study has been used. In Russia the major driver of land use/land cover change is agriculture. About twenty years ago the reforms of Russian agriculture were started. Agricultural lands in many regions were dramatically impacted by changed management practices, resulted in accelerated erosion and reduced biodiversity. Between the natural factors that shape agriculture in Russia, climate is the most important one. The study of long-term and short-ter...

Annals of The Association of American Geographers

Land use and land cover change is a complex process, driven by both natural and anthropogenic transformations (Fig. 1). In Russia, the major driver of land use / land cover change is agriculture. It has taken centuries of farming to create the existing spatial distribution of agricultural lands. Modernization of Russian agriculture started fifteen years ago. It has brought little change in land cover, except in the regions with marginal agriculture, where many fields were abandoned. However, in some regions, agricultural lands were dramatically impacted by changed management practices, resulting in accelerating erosion and reduced biodiversity. In other regions, federal support and private investments in the agricultural sector, especially those made by major oil and financial companies, has resulted in a certain land recovery. Between the natural factors that shape the agriculture in Russia, climate is the most important one. In the North European and most of the Asian part of the ...

In recent decades, Russia has experienced substantial transformations in agricultural land tenure. Post-Soviet reforms have shaped land distribution patterns but the impacts of these on agricultural use of land remain under-investigated. On a regional scale, there is still a knowledge gap in terms of knowing to what extent the variations in the compositions of agricultural land funds may be explained by changes in the acreage of other land categories. Using a case analysis of 82 of Russia’s territories from 2010 to 2018, the authors attempted to study the structural variations by picturing the compositions of regional land funds and mapping agricultural land distributions based on ranking “land activity”. Correlation analysis of centered log-ratio transformed compositional data revealed that in agriculture-oriented regions, the proportion of cropland was depressed by agriculture-to-urban and agriculture-to-industry land loss. In urbanized territories, the compositions of agricultura...

Despite harsh climate, agriculture on the northern margins of Russia still remains the backbone of food security. Historically, in both regions studied in this article – the Republic of Karelia and the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) – agricultural activities as dairy farming and even cropping were well adapted to local conditions including traditional activities such as horse breeding typical for Yakutia. Using three different sources of information – official statistics, expert interviews, and field observations – allowed us to draw a conclusion that there are both similarities and differences in agricultural development and land use of these two studied regions. The differences arise from agro-climate conditions, settlement history, specialization, and spatial pattern of economy. In both regions, farming is concentrated within the areas with most suitable natural conditions. Yet, even there, agricultural land use is shrinking, especially in Karelia. Both regions are prone to being af...
