This is how the relationship between pets is evolving. People treat them no less than humans. For instance, they celebrate their birthdays; get those matching outfits and more.

In my opinion, I feel the pets rightly deserve it. The most common pet you can find at anyone’s place is dogs. A man’s best friend and the most faithful animal, a dog. I also have a pet dog that I love to bits. We got him when he was a little baby and have watched him grow into a beautiful dog. All my family members love him with all their heart. We love his silly antics and cannot imagine our lives without him. We named him Sasha.

Sasha – My Pet Dog

My father adopted Sasha when he was a little baby. His friend had given birth to puppies and they decided to put the puppies up for adoption. We convinced our father to get one for us. Considering they knew our family well, they immediately agreed. Little did we know that our lives would change forever after his entrance.

Sasha came in like a blessing for our family. He belongs to the breed of Labrador. Sasha was black in colour, pure coal black. He came in as a puppy with his cute little paws and eyes. We couldn’t stop gushing over this beauty. My siblings used to fight with each other as to who will get the maximum time to play with Sasha.

They bark when they sense danger and can bite intruders and attackers to protect themselves and their owners. Because of their loyalty, dogs are also known as “man’s best friend”.

However, there are many people who abuse dogs and abandon them. Many dogs end up in dog shelters, injured, starved and homeless. There are also millions of stray dogs on the streets around the world who lead miserable lives. We need to be kind towards them and all other animals. We should take care of them and stop others from hurting them as well. 

Some dog breeders also breed dogs for aesthetics without caring about the animal’s health and well-being. This results in many dogs developing breathing issues, spine issues and many other health problems. One should stop such acts and only breed dogs ethically. Dogs are faithful animals. They love us selflessly and we should love them as well.

Why are Dogs so Loyal to Humans? What Science Says

As diverse as breeds have become over the centuries, loyalty is one characteristic we expect from any dog. It’s easy to take for granted but also something we appreciate as singular to man’s best friend.

Despite being only one of many domesticated animals throughout history, a dog’s devotion to people raises some intriguing questions. Why are dogs so loyal to humans? What makes them more protective, affectionate, and agreeable toward their owners than other pets?

We’ll unravel our unique relationship and storied history with dogs to understand how they became such committed companions.

Why Are Dogs Loyal to Humans?

The modern dog’s loyalty is the product of their physical and social evolution over several millennia. As the descendants of wolves, dogs were man’s first domesticated animal. Pre-agriculture humans may have connected with wolves as early as the end of the last ice age, over 20,000 years ago.

Early domestication was practical for both parties. Hunter-gatherers used wolves for tracking and killing animals, while wolves stayed around humans when offered food. Domestication occurred alongside rudimentary selective breeding by humans and within wolf populations.

For their part, humans wouldn’t tolerate certain animals. They culled aggressive wolves and only took in those fearless enough to approach people. At the same time, wolves would face less pressure in the pack, thanks to humans. With reduced competition for mates and resources, some traits became less critical for their survival.

Wolves and the Foundation of Loyalty

Although humans may have fine-tuned it, loyalty was already established in early wolf-dogs. Fundamentally, dogs and wolves are pack animals within a hierarchy, with all members loyal to the group. Wolves are incredibly cooperative.

In one experiment 1 , researchers discovered wolves were equally able to communicate with people to solve a collaborative task, showing a high social ceiling they undoubtedly lent to dogs.

Dogs inherited the tolerance, inhibition, and attentiveness wolves show to fellow pack members.

The difference appears in where they show their loyalty. The study comparing dogs and wolves in a string-pulling task found that although both species could work cooperatively with humans, the wolves were likely to disregard them or take the lead. Meanwhile, the dogs more often waited to follow their person’s guidance.

Some scientists theorize dogs developed this deferential behavior toward humans during their domestic history. They aren’t more cooperative than wolves. But they direct that attitude more towards humans than their kind.

Indeed, wolves work well together to raise their young, hunt, and survive, maintaining functional relationships even during conflict. Dogs are less likely to tolerate other dogs, instead opting to avoid conflict and cooperate more with humans.

Selective Breeding

As civilization advanced, dogs became widespread globally. Breeds grew more diverse, taking shape according to local conditions and the needs of their people. Ancient Malamutes, for example, had thick fur and powerful bodies to haul cargo in their native Alaska.

Meanwhile, ferocious Molossus dogs had enormous frames to aid Roman conquerors as war dogs. Over the centuries, specialized hunting functions, herding, and other duties created more breeds .

While physical traits unsurprisingly passed to later generations, behavior also persevered. Border Collies, for instance, are more prone to nipping due to a herding background. Differences exist between individuals due to life experience, but genetics plays a clear role in defining behavioral traits. Scientists discovered as much in a 2019 study pulling C-BARQ survey data from dog owners to explore behavioral and genetic differences among breeds.

The researchers found 131 genetic variants playing significant roles (alongside upbringing and environment) in determining traits like stranger-directed aggression, predatory chasing, and excitability. As we measure a dog’s loyalty to humans in traits like biddability and friendliness, we can see it’s written into their DNA !

Are Dogs Loyal to Owners?

Now that we know why dogs are loyal, a new question arises: How loyal are they? Any responsible dog owner has enough experience to say their dogs are loyal to them and their family. Stories abound of dogs fearlessly protecting children, waiting for hours or even days for owners to return, and offering affection in moments of sorrow.

While its expression might vary between breeds and individuals, loyalty is typical of any dog.

If the vast amounts of anecdotal evidence suggest a dog’s loyalty to an owner and family, the science practically proves it. Studies show dogs closely connect with owners, identifying them by their face , smell , and voice.

They display a clear general preference for owners versus other stimuli. In one study, the dogs in the sample even showed a higher emotional response toward the anticipation of owner praise than a food reward!

Dog-Human Relationship

Humans and dogs, both social animals, have an exceptional ability to bond. Compared to other stimuli, including unfamiliar people and food, an owner’s praise or presence often does more to activate reward centers in the dog’s brain.

Specifically, researchers have found owners consistently increase activity in the caudate nucleus. Alongside reward detection, this area of the brain affects learning, memory, motivation, and even feelings of love.

What makes the owner so special? Dogs develop unique relationships with humans based on attachment. Scientists relate their neural processes when getting praise to that of a child in an infant-mother relationship.

Unlike the casual relationship with people outside the home, dogs trust owners because they are a secure base and a safe haven. Dogs depend on owners as a reference point and security when exploring new places or situations. As safe havens, owners offer a place to retreat when the dog is in danger. Just as a child seeks comfort from their mother, a dog needs attention from their owner.

Final Thoughts

Canines have come a long way in their domestic history . The modern dog’s connection to man is intrinsic and essential to survival. From the outset, it pushes them toward loyal, cooperative relationships with people. Yet, nature only tells half the story.

Dogs are still individuals shaped through experience. While domestication gave dogs the capacity to bond and show loyalty to humans, it’s up to their people to make the most of that potential.

Dogs are commonly known as “man’s best friends” due to their close relationships with humans. Numerous stories exist that tell of their devotion to people and to other animals that have led to self-sacrificial acts of loyalty that cannot be justified through the framework of common animal instincts such as self-preservation. While some of these behaviors may have evolved through the long history of human and dog coexistence, the basis should be within the traits usually displayed by canines. Prehistoric wolves and other animals should have exhibited characteristics that led them to begin coexisting with humanity and help each other. This essay investigates the admirable loyalty of dogs and their roots.

Humans have independently domesticated dogs in various parts of the world. According to “Why Dogs Are Loyal,” the animal is present in the mythologies and religions of numerous ancient cultures, such as Greece, Egypt, and Mexico. Various canine breeds are used and trusted in various manners of situations, including medical, hunting, and military applications. Dogs are willing to brave dangers, exhibit large amounts of effort, and take risks for the sake of their owners and other humans or animals. That trait makes them excellent companions, often indispensable for moral or physical support, and humans have recognized the fact and responded accordingly.

Some part of the affection that dogs display stems from the time they have spent alongside humanity. According to Tronier, the relationship has existed for up to 30,000 years, and specific behaviors have evolved on the part of both dogs and humans. The most notable example is training, as humans have developed a practical set of commands and a training regimen that teaches the dog to follow the orders through positive reinforcement.

Dogs, for their part, have learned to respond to these methods and generally become highly trainable animals. Ultimately, however, their loyalty stems from the natural traits they share with other canines, although with specific differences that made dogs a better target for domestication than other animals.

Much of the highly social and loyal nature of dogs comes from their natural traits and mentality. According to Millan, dogs, like other canines, are pack animals, and their affection and devotion stems from recognition of people or other animals as members of the group. The candidates are not limited to humans and other dogs, and animals such as cats have been known to be under the protection of dogs. The animals naturally seek to establish relationships and bonds, and the behavior extends to similar species, such as wolves. While only dogs have become such close companions to people, canines as a whole display admirable devotion to those close to them.

Dogs are man’s closest companions, displaying extreme loyalty and devotion to people and other animals that they consider a part of their pack. In part, this tendency has evolved from the long history of cooperation between the two species, similar to how other domesticated animals have become noticeably different from their wild counterparts. However, the majority of the traits that make dogs admirable examples of faithfulness can be observed in most canines.

Dogs are highly affectionate towards those they recognize as part of their pack and want to help and protect them, regardless of whether the individual is a dog, a human, or another animal. This loyalty and willingness to accept and embrace others make dogs excellent companions and examples to admire and partially emulate for humans.

I have a pet dog and his name is Chandler. He is named after my favourite “ Friends ” character and has been with us for the last nine months. His colour is golden and his tail is bushy as he is a golden retriever. Chandler is very energetic and likes to play a lot with all of us. He runs extremely fast when chasing cats. He is very playful. We take good care of his diet. I give him foods like eggs, meat, fish, bread, rice, etc. Whenever I return from school, he wags his tail in joy and jumps and hops all around me as if celebrating. My pet dog is a Golden Retriever and his name is Cheddar. He is named after a dog seen on the famous sitcom “Brooklyn 99”. Cheddar is a very energetic and playful dog. He likes to go on walks a lot and play with frisbees and balls. My dad brought him home a year ago. Although I somewhat wanted a cat, now I love him the most. Bella, my sister is crazy about dogs, she wanted a dog since time immemorial. At first, our mother was sceptical about getting a pet, but now Cheddar is her favourite. She treats him just like the way she treats us. 

My sister is particular about his timely vaccinations, eating habits, cleanliness, etc. She bathes him twice a week and every evening, we take him out for a stroll in the neighbourhood as well as the park. As mentioned before, Cheddar is quite active. Hence, we play with him in the park a lot. We throw a ball or a frisbee and play a game of fetch with him. He likes to roll in the leaves and it is fun to watch him do so. Along with being active, Cheddar is smart as well. At home, when his food is served, as long as we don’t say the word “go” he patiently waits. On command, he jumps and shakes hands with us using his paw. When told, he can roll over too. He amuses us with his daily fetching of random things like slippers, or one of his toys. We love him with all our heart and he has become an essential member of our family.

Essay on My Pet in 300 words

My pet’s name is Mario. He is a two-year-old German Shepherd. I was in 6th grade when my father brought Mario home when he was just 45 days old. His cute little face was so fluffy I could just hug and kiss him all day. I bought a soccer ball, with which he and I used to play all day long. Being in school, I used to think about what is he doing right now or today I’ll take him for a walk to the park, where we will play soccer, etc. 

His unconditional love has always been there as a stress reliever. His loyalty, unwavering support and companionship have been with me in my good and bad times. Now that he is an adult, I have taken all his responsibilities like feeding him, bathing him, taking him for walks, etc. 

Mario once fell ill due to a cold, and whatever he was eating, he was not able to digest it. I got s worried that I took him to the vet, where he was given a penicillin shot as an antibiotic treatment. I was so scared that I held him with my hands and he was lying there, unconscious. Two hours later, he gained his consciousness and started licking my face. All my sorrow and sadness vanished away in a second, seeing his beautiful eyes and fluffy tail wavering all over the table. 

Now that he is completely healthy, I take him for his walks every day, where he is always filled with excitement to explore the other world. As a loyal friend, my dog, Mario, has never demanded anything except for 3 times of meals and a walk. Whether it’s a game of fetch in the backyard or a stroll in the park, every shared moment is a treasure that adds richness to my life.

Dog’s loyalty to Humans- Scientifically Explained

Oh! the Man’s Best Friend  and those cute, lovely, and loyal pets.

Ever wondered why Dogs are loyal ? Is there any science behind it?

In this article, we will try to explain it with scientific facts and hypotheses.

We will describe these in this article.

Earlier studies

Genetic factors, other factors, problem solving and social behavioral responses comparison between wolves and dogs, dog’s loyalty to their owners, dog’s loyalty to certain individuals, dog understand humans, sense of smell for recognition, loyalty and dog’s breed, hypersociability & dog breeds.

Dogs were first thought to have descended from wolves and according to some older studies, their genetic information shows similarity between their genes. Some have theorized that due to evolution they emerged as a new and separate species. This can also be seen from the morphological point of view, as there are quite a few resemblance between dogs and wolves. But this is not the case . We will find out about dog’s ancestry later in this article.

Although, they have similar habit of hunting in packs or groups. There is also a dominant or alpha male in most groups. Nowadays, domesticated or pet dogs might differ from the mentioned points above but it still holds somewhat good for wild dogs. 

Why Dogs are loyal?

It is not sure for how long we have domesticated dogs. Some state that it has been 15,000-30,000 years or more since its domestication while some say it’s 10,000 years. Thus, it can be said that it has been at least 10,000 years since the domestication of dogs.

It has been over 10,000 years of domestication of wild dogs and it changed the dog’s psychology and behavior over time. It is believed that some dogs were friendly to humans and used to roam around human shelters. They developed a mutual relationship and it played a big role in their evolution as the dog we know today. These friendly dogs depended on humans when they were starving and humans domesticated them for their security. This mutual bonding between humans and dogs facilitated coexistence among them.

Resemblance to Wolves

Dogs and wolves split (Genetic Divergence) from their common ancestor between  27,000-40,000 years  ago. Domestic dogs do not share direct ancestry with any of the modern living wolves. The  last shared common ancestor of dog and wolf went extinct  a long time ago.  The late Pleistocene wolf was the last known ancestor of dog. Scientist found genetic evidence from ancient wolf rib bone discovered lying on the tundra  in Siberia’s Taimyr Peninsula.

According to an article published in   N ature  in 2010, more than 48,000 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in dogs and their wild progenitor were studied to better understand the phenotypic evolution and ancestry under domestication.

The studies showed that dogs shared a higher proportion of multi-locus haplotypes distinct to  Middle Eastern grey wolves , indicating that they are the ancestor of dogs rather than wolves from East Asia, as suggested by mitochondrial DNA sequence data. Although, they interbred with local wolf populations in the other parts of the world in the early history of particular lineages.

• It can be concluded from this observation that Dogs shared a common ancestor with  Middle Eastern Grey Wolve s. But it is not true  according to new study.

This part is a little interesting!

• Gene homologous for Williams-Beuren syndrome (WBS) in humans, results in hypersociability in dogs.

According to an article published on   Science Advances , scientists namely- Bridgett M. vonHoldt, Emily Shuldiner, Ilana Janowitz Koch, Rebecca Y. Kartzinel, Andrew Hogan, Lauren Brubaker, Shelby Wanser, Daniel Stahler, Clive D. L. Wynne, Elaine A. Ostrander, Janet S. Sinsheimer and Monique A. R. Udell

analyzed 5-Mb sequence on chromosome 6  in domestic dog breeds. 

Deletion of this region located within   WBSCR17   in humans is linked to Williams-Beuren syndrome (WBS) , one of the characteristic of which is associated with hypersocial behavior . Also, WBSCR17  gene differ in dogs from wolves.

On associating quantitative data on behavioral phenotype with WBS (1.5- to 1.8-Mb hemizygous deletion on human chromosome 7q11.23) in humans to structural changes in homologous locus in dogs, scientists found hypersociability (like in WBS ), a distinguishable element that separates dogs from wolves.

Structural variants in two other adjacent genes- GTF2I   and   GTF2IRD1 present within the WBS locus, earlier implicated with the behavioral phenotype of people with WBS also contributes to extreme sociability in dogs. 

Loyalty is pretty much in a dog’s genes. It is their inherited character as they are loyal to their packs also. This behavior has been developed as they stuck together as a group of packs and hunted in packs as well. This adherence to packs resulted in the development of their social character.

A SNP (single nucleotide polymorphism) associated with the oxytocin receptor gene known to influence human pair-bonding was studied and was found to be associated with proximity seeking and friendliness in two dog breeds. 

Subjects were given a challenge to open a solvable puzzle box within 2 minutes containing half of a 2.5-cm-thick piece of summer sausage under three conditions- Alone, with a familiar human, and with an unfamiliar/strange human.

Dogs gazed at humans more than they looked at the box, quite opposite to what wolves did. Also, more wolves were able to successfully solve the task than dogs under the human presence as well as while alone.

Dogs spent more time in human proximity than wolves. Dogs spent more time looking, even at unfamiliar/stranger human than wolves. It can also be concluded that pet dogs are more dependent on humans than their wild counterparts and ultimately wolves are more independent when it comes to problem-solving but they are less social.

All the above-mentioned points hold true for dogs loyalty to humans. But their is more to explain.

When dogs interacts with its owner, the hormone named- oxytocin  or love hormone  is released in them, just like humans do when they interact with someone they love. It deepens the bond between humans and dogs. Dogs are also very appreciative of someone who even provides food for them.

Dogs are usually most loyal to someone who look after them, feeds them, care for them, etc. But sometimes, this is not always the case, sometimes the dog’s closest/favorite person might be someone else.

Puppies up to 6 months are very receptive in nature and bonds closest to the person who look after them during this key socialization period.

There is also something known as first imprinting, animals have been shown to have affection towards any animal or person whom they meet after they are born. This imprinting builds connection between both of them, and it works in dogs case as well.

Dogs can interpret human speech. They can recognize human words and can read human clues as well. It is likely that dogs were the first animals to be domesticated. It is because of their evolution with humans.

Dogs might not view color with their eyes but they have a very strong sense of smell. You might probably be aware of using guard dogs for solving crimes. Dogs reacts differently to various kinds of smell and body odour of humans. They reacts differently to body smell of familiar and strange humans, familiar dogs/animals and unfamiliar ones etc.

The part of the dog’s brain known as the ‘ caudate nucleus ’ is associated with familiar smell and reward system. When they smell familiar scent of  a human, it activates pleasure reward system in caudate nucleus   part of their brain. 

Some Dog breeds are more loyal than others.

According to The Happy Puppy website , these are some breeds regarded as most loyal dogs, namely- Akita, Beagle, Boxer, Chihuahua, Collie, Doberman Pinscher, German Shepherd, Golden Retriever, Great Pyrenees, Labrador Retriever, Yorkshire Terrier

An Akita named Hachikō  from Japan  is often regarded as being the world’s most loyal dog. This dog waited for his master every day at the railway station for nearly a decade (10 years) even after his master died.

“As the canine companion to a university professor, Hachikō  patiently waited his owner’s return from work at their local train station each evening. But when the professor died suddenly one day at work, Hachikō  was left waiting at the station — for nearly a decade. Every day after his master passed,  Hachikō  the dog returned to the train station, often to the chagrin of the employees who worked there. But his fidelity soon won them over, and he became an international sensation and a symbol of loyalty.”- as per ATI  website.

Just like every dog has its unique character and some are more social than others. It depends on a dog as well as its breed. Some breeds are more social and friendly while some are better guard dogs. Inheritance plays a key role in their behavior towards people and other dogs/animals.

Pets, especially dogs, can bring psychological benefits. Spending time with them can reduce your stress and anxiety. It can calm you down when you are depressed and angry. They encourage exercise and playfulness which in turn improve your health. Dogs can help you ease feelings of self-isolation.

Sniffer dogs with their strong stimulus of smell can help humans to detect explosives, contraband, and even diseases. They help the police to catch thieves and other rogues. 

They also serve as good security guards and protect the environment.

German Shepherd: They are basically sheepdogs. They are highly intelligent. This breed is known for its courage, loyalty, and guarding instincts. They make an excellent guard dog, police dog, and rescue dog. 

Golden Retriever: They are even-tempered, affectionate, and intelligent. They normally don’t bark too much so that they are considered as good watchdogs.

Bulldogs: They can be good pet dogs but they are very aggressive by nature. If things don’t go well with them they can show their aggression. 

Beagle: They are small built dogs. Their appearance is similar to larger foxhounds. They are affectionate, temperamental, and independent. 

Rottweiler: They are aggressive dogs and dominant dogs. They are highly active and intelligent. 

How is a Dog's Age Calculated?

As per the general guidelines, the first year of a dog is equal to fifteen years of human age. The second year of a dog equals about nine years of human age. Consequently, each human year is approximately five years for a dog.

The Lifespan of a Dog

Typically, a dog lives for 10 to 13 years, but it depends on the breed of the dog. The smaller sized dogs live over 15-16 years. The medium and large-sized dogs live for 10-13 years and some giant dog breeds often live for 7-8 years. 

Dogs are one of the most faithful and loyal species. All they need is good treatment and care from humans. There are many dogs who don’t get proper shelter and care. We must go forward and help them and shower them with affection. In return, they will love us unconditionally.

10 of the Best Novels and Short Stories about Dogs

Novelists and short-story writers have created some classic narratives about man’s best friend, the dog. But what are the very best stories and novels about dogs? Where should we begin in assessing the classic, canonical literature that features dogs?

From Homer’s Odyssey onwards – where the hero’s faithful hound remembered him upon his return to Ithaca – the annals of literature are full of famous literary dogs. Here are ten of the best works of fiction to feature our four-legged friends.

1. Mark Twain, ‘ A Dog’s Tale ’.

My father was a St. Bernard, my mother was a collie, but I am a Presbyterian. This is what my mother told me, I do not know these nice distinctions myself. To me they are only fine large words meaning nothing. My mother had a fondness for such; she liked to say them, and see other dogs look surprised and envious, as wondering how she got so much education …

This 1903 tale is one of several stories on this list which are told from the dog’s perspective. The dog in question is sold to a new owner and is sad to leave her mother behind, but the family she goes to live with are kind to her. One day, a fire breaks out in the nursery of the house – and the dog comes to the rescue …

2. Eleanor Atkinson, Greyfriars Bobby .

Bobby slipped out, dry as his own delectable bone, from under the tomb of Mistress Jean Grant, and nearly wagged his tail off with pleasure. Mistress Jeanie was set in a proud flutter when the Grand Leddy rang at the lodge kitchen and asked if she and Bobby could have their tea there with the old couple by the cozy grate fire …

Perhaps the most famous novel ever written about a dog, Greyfriars Bobby (1912) is a Scottish tale about the faithfulness of dogs towards their owners. Written from the perspective of the Skye terrier which gives the novel its title, the novel also features Auld Jock, Bobby’s owner, who has a close bond with his pet terrier.

When (spoiler alert) Jock dies, Bobby refuses to leave his master’s side, even when Jock is buried. Bobby ends up guarding Jock’s grave, by day and night, thus neatly symbolising the two main features associated with dogs: fidelity and vigilance.

3. O. Henry, ‘ Memoirs of a Yellow Dog ’.

But you needn’t look for any stuck-up literature in my piece, such as Bearoo, the bear, and Snakoo, the snake, and Tammanoo, the tiger, talk in the jungle books. A yellow dog that’s spent most of his life in a cheap New York flat, sleeping in a corner on an old sateen underskirt (the one she spilled port wine on at the Lady Longshoremen’s banquet), mustn’t be expectcd to perform any tricks with the art of speech …

In this 1903 story from one of America’s greatest writers of the short story, the yellow dog of the story’s title recounts his life, his owners, and his love for his master (and his dislike for his master’s wife). Man and dog really do have a stronger bond in this story than man and wife – but we won’t spoil the ending …

4. Rudyard Kipling, ‘ Garm – a Hostage ’.

First published in 1899, this short story from the writer who also gave us the poem ‘ The Power of the Dog ’ – tells of a man whose friend gives him a bull-terrier as a ‘hostage’. However, ‘Garm’ – the name the narrator gives to his newly acquired dog – misses his original owner, who visits his beloved terrier on a regular basis. This is another tale tinged with sadness, but shot through with the strong bond between a man and his dog.

5. Jack London, The Call of the Wild .

London (1876-1916) was the first writer to become a millionaire from his writing, and although he wrote a vast number of different books including an early dystopian novel ( The Iron Heel ) and a novel set in the days of early man ( Before Adam ), he is best-known for his two short novels set in the Yukon Territory in Canada during the Gold Rush, The Call of the Wild (1903) and White Fang (1906).

The first of these is probably the most famous and widely read, and focuses on a dog which is stolen from its home in California and made to work as a sled-dog in the snowy wilds of Alaska. As the novel’s title suggests, The Call of the Wild is about the canine protagonist’s transition from a life among civilisation to the relative freedom he finds among the wilderness of the Yukon.

6. Virginia Woolf, Flush: A Biography .

Although it’s subtitled A Biography , this short 1933 book is as much fiction as non-fiction. However, its subject was real enough: the Victorian poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s pet dog. The cocker spaniel, Flush, is acquired by Barrett Browning and taken from the countryside to London, where he lives among the London literati before travelling out with the Brownings to Italy.

This is Woolf’s funniest book, and although it’s wildly different from The Waves or Mrs Dalloway , it shows off her distinctive modernist style.

7. Franz Kafka, ‘Investigations of a Dog’.

Kafka is a master of the weird, the unusual, the not-quite-right, his stories and novels haunting us long after we have finished reading them. And although he’s well-known for longer works like The Castle and The Trial , he was also a master of the short story form, including the long short story (witness his masterpiece, ‘The Metamorphosis’).

This 1922 story is another tale narrated by a dog, telling us about its experiences. But Kafka’s canine narrator is a philosophical creature, who is interested in the deeper meaning behind his existence and who seeks rational explanations for the things which have befallen him.

8. Richard Adams, The Plague Dogs .

Everyone knows of Watership Down , Adams’ bestselling 1972 novel about a group of rabbits, but his 1977 novel The Plague Dogs is not as well-known. The novel focuses on Rowf and Snitter, two dogs which escape from a government research station in the Lake District in northern England.

They survive among the wilds of Cumbria, which Adams describes with great power and skill, but there’s a price on their backs – especially as it’s feared they may be carrying a deadly strain of plague which they acquired at the research station …

9. Philip K. Dick, ‘Roog’.

This story was written in 1951, and is an early work by the prolific science-fiction author – and a patron saint of the counterculture – Philip K. Dick (1928-82), best-known for writing the novel that inspired the film Blade Runner as well as other classic novels and stories such as ‘The Minority Report’ (also made into a film) and for the alternative-history novel, The Man in the High Castle .

This is another story told from the point of view of a dog. Boris believes the garbage-men who come to collect the trash from his owner’s house are aliens invading from another planet. He calls the strange creatures ‘Roogs’, but his attempts to warn his owners about the alien invasion are futile.

But Dick leaves enough doubt in our minds that the dog may, after all, be right, and the ‘garbage-men’ may not be all they seem – as usual with Dick’s fiction, our understanding of reality and everything we take for granted is given a good shake.

10. Mark Haddon, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time .

Perhaps no pick of the best novels and stories about dogs could be without this more recent example, this 2003 mystery novel loosely inspired by the Sherlock Holmes adventures and featuring a teenage protagonist, Christopher, who goes in search of the neighbour’s missing dog.

Although people tend to assume that Christopher has Asperger’s, Haddon has refuted this, and the book makes no reference to it. Instead, as Haddon has said in a blog post, the novel is about being an outsider.

Why it’s not ‘alright’ if your dog is friendly

A series of recent attacks by XL bully type dogs in the UK, and government attempts to both define and control the breed , has refocused attention on how society manages “dangerous dogs”.

Much media coverage focuses on the trauma that pets or humans endure after they’ve been attacked by an XL bully, or protests from XL bully owners that their dogs are being unfairly singled out.

But my research showed that many owners have to deal with problematic behaviour when walking their dogs. Many of my research participants advocated closer control of all dogs in public, or at least a recognition that some dogs need to be given more space .

From February 2024 it became a criminal offence to own an XL Bully dog in England and Wales unless it has a certificate of exemption, third party insurance, and is leashed and muzzled in public.

But aggression and other unwanted behaviour are not restricted to certain breeds. Even pets from usually docile breeds can display confrontational behaviour while out for a walk.

Owners often resort to great lengths to manage these behavioural challenges, demonstrated by the many television programmes on dog training that are a staple of evening schedules (such as Channel 5’s Dogs Behaving Very Badly ).

I explored the experiences of caring for dogs that fall short of our expectations . It detailed the social and emotional toll for owners, who reported feelings of exclusion and dislocation. The research also identified the tactics adopted by walkers in an attempt to make walks a more convivial experience.

Walking that ‘wild dog of yours’

It is long recognised that dog walking has health and social benefits for both the walker and the dog. Dogs can build trust and strengthen relationships between people and the communities they live in. However, many dogs have behavioural issues that limit these benefits.

My interest in this topic stemmed from my experience of adopting Tommy – a Jack Russell who lived for around 16 years. On walks, Tommy barked and strained at other dogs. His behaviour became so extreme it prevented any amiable interaction with fellow dog walkers. One family member once referred to him as “that wild dog of yours”. Walks were isolating experiences for my partner and I, rather than a source of social interaction.

Realising that I was not alone in this experience prompted my research.

Participants described a catalogue of incidents where their dog’s behaviour created tension with – and detachment from – fellow walkers. One spoke regretfully about how their experience didn’t live up to their romanticised expectations of having a dog. Another described how their dog’s behaviour solicited gazes of disapproval from other dog walkers:

“People look at you, staring. Sometimes they’ll say something too – like tell you what to do. ‘Let him off the lead’, or ask ‘can’t you train him better?’ They probably don’t mean to make you feel bad but you still do.”

My research also documented how some encounters led to confrontation between owners.

Several respondents were concerned about the behaviour of other dogs, particularly those unleashed and free to “invade” their dog’s space. One interviewee said:

Dogs that are off the lead are a real pain … They’re not actually being aggressive – just want a sniff and to say hello. But you know my dog is aggressive and under control. Your dog might not be aggressive – but is it under control? I don’t think so!

Negotiating troubled dog walks

Walks sometimes left human companions feeling frustrated with their dogs, isolated from fellow walkers and alienated from their local community. This was not what they believed owning a dog would entail.

Yet owners retained an acute sense of obligation to walk their dogs , adopting a careful choreography to avoid social contact with fellow walkers.

This ranged from choosing specific routes to avoiding crowded areas or walking at quieter times of the day. They also made tactical use of features on streets and neighbourhoods. For instance street furniture, vegetation, and parked vehicles were used to disrupt sight lines between dogs.

Others walked in places where dog access or freedom was restricted in the hope that the animals they encountered would be more predictable:

I love seeing dog walking restrictions, when it’s the lambing season or places where dogs are allowed but only on leads…you’ll come across dogs but they won’t get up close and personal

Ironically, many owners avoided dog-friendly places such as parks, pubs, cafes and events.

There were, however, more positive experiences. Walkers described how their attempts to accommodate problematic behaviour led them to seek new, previously unexplored places where dogs aren’t allowed off the lead. Small networks of walkers with similar experiences formed, forging the solidarity and sociability that many had hoped dog companionship would have brought from the outset.

Some dogs just need more space

My research provides an insight into the challenges that many face when venturing into the outside world with a dog that is nervous, anxious or that displays aggression.

Greater awareness of why many dogs must be under close control, education campaigns on leashing and ultimately the encouragement of more responsible dog ownership is required to ensure there is space in society for all our canine companions.
