These features, however, help point out where students went wrong and offer valuable learning opportunities that can help students enhance their understanding of appropriate spelling and punctuation.”

In her essay, Barroso discusses the advantages and disadvantages of incorporating computers into education. They allow schools to maximize online resources, foster student engagement, and make it easier for teachers and students to perform school-related tasks. However, they may make students lazy to check mistakes, thinking that the computers will automatically check them. Ultimately, the pros outweigh the cons. 

“As far as I concerned, computer is a great invention and it is useful to human life. It should be impossible to live without computer as we get too much used of computers nowadays. Fox discusses the state of society today where we rely far too much on computers. And if something goes wrong, like the servers crash, the world is at a standstill. Computers are a net good for society, but we must avoid revolving our lives around technology.

A good example is language — the more a child is exposed to linguistics in early years, the more evolved the area of her brain that is associated with languages would get. Prakash discusses the different ways in which our brains operate as computers. An information processing system has five components: input, output, storage, processing, and program. The human brain does have all of these components, which are used to perform our daily functions. She looks into how human intelligence can be “trained,” like computers are developed.

As schools look to cut costs, more are considering using computers to grade students' writing assignments and to provide writing help. The programs can assess large numbers of papers in seconds.

Imagine a school where every child gets instant, personalized writing help for a fraction of the cost of hiring a human teacher — and where a computer, not a person, grades a student's essays.

It's not so far-fetched. Some schools around the country are already using computer programs to help teach students to write.

There are two big arguments for automated essay scoring: lower expenses and better test grading. Using computers instead of humans would certainly be cheaper, but not everyone agrees on argument No. 2.

Les Perelman, director of the student writing program at MIT, is among the skeptics. Perelman recently tried out a computer essay grading program made by testing giant Educational Testing Service.

"Of the 12 errors noted in one essay, 11 were incorrect," Perelman says. "There were a few places where I intentionally put in some comma errors and it didn't notice them. In other words, it doesn't work very well."

Perelman says any student who can read can be taught to score very highly on a machine-graded test.

That's because software developers build the computer programs by feeding in thousands of student essays that have already been graded by humans.

Then, by identifying the elements of essays that human graders seem to like, the programs create a model used to grade new essays. If human graders give essays with long sentences high marks, for example, the programs will tend to do so, as well. If human graders like big words, the programs will also, say, "manifest a tantamount predilection for meretricious vocabulary."

So, Perelman says, it's possible for students to score an A on a computer-graded essay simply by combining all the elements of an essay that would be scored highly by a human grader.

Of course, if you know the elements of an A essay and are able to combine them, odds are you're already a pretty good writer.

Mark Shermis, dean of the University of Akron's College of Education, recently co-authored a study of nine different essay-grading computer programs. On shorter writing assignments, Shermis says, the computer programs matched grades from real, live humans up to 85 percent of the time.

But on longer, more complicated responses, the technology didn't do quite as well.

"It will not identify the next great American novelist," Shermis says. "But if what you're trying to do is communicate thoughts and ideas in a very straightforward manner, then the technology is actually a wonderful tool."

But not always. Shermis ran the Gettysburg Address through one of the earlier-generation computer grading programs, one usually used to evaluate the writing abilities of college freshmen.

Suffice it to say, Abe did not ace the test.

"On a scale of 1 to 6, one of the greatest presidents of the United States was only getting 2s and 3s," Shermis says of Lincoln's scores. "We were actually very shocked."

A history professor told Shermis he shouldn't worry; the speech is more famous for its context than for the actual words themselves.

Still, school officials trying to cut expenses are intrigued by the promise of scoring thousands of student essays in seconds, without the need to hire human graders.

Jeff Pence, who teaches writing to seventh-graders in a Georgia middle school, is already sold on the idea.

The computer graders he uses give students instant feedback on every draft. Pence says there's no way he and his red teacher's pen could do that. And quicker responses, he says, lead to more writing.

"The quantity drives the quality up," Pence says. "It's kind of the old bicycle thing — the best way to learn how to ride a bicycle is to ride a bicycle. And the best way to get better at writing is to write and receive consistent, timely feedback."

Pence says it would be great to have a couple of dozen real, live human teachers reading every student draft. It would also be nice, he says, if his district found the money to hire those extra teachers. But until then, he's holding on to his computer programs.

In the future, computers will be our doctors, our soldiers, our firefighters and our teachers. They’ll diagnose diseases, nurture our babies, protect our homes and teach our kids. One company is already developing an essay-grading computer program that can take the load off professors and standardized test graders. But can a computer really rate a carefully crafted essay?

The company, edX , certainly thinks so. They already offer online courses to institutions, along with an artificial intelligence system that will grade student essays. John Markoff at the New York Times explains :

Anant Agarwal, an electrical engineer who is president of EdX, predicted that the instant-grading software would be a useful pedagogical tool, enabling students to take tests and write essays over and over and improve the quality of their answers. He said the technology would offer distinct advantages over the traditional classroom system, where students often wait days or weeks for grades. “There is a huge value in learning with instant feedback,” Dr. Agarwal said. “Students are telling us they learn much better with instant feedback.”

Whether or not that instant feedback is high quality is another question. Skeptics of these computer graders aren’t hard to find . One group, which calls itself Professionals Against Machine Scoring of Student Essays in High-Stakes Assessment issued a statement and is collecting signatures to speak out against handing the task of grading over to a computer. They write :

Let’s face the realities of automatic essay scoring. Computers cannot “read.” They cannot measure the essentials of effective written communication: accuracy, reasoning, adequacy of evidence, good sense, ethical stance, convincing argument, meaningful organization, clarity, and veracity, among others.

The petition asks for legislators to stop relying on computers for grading and for schools to stop buying into the automated scoring systems.

Agarwal acknowledges that the software could be better and hopes that it will get better at distinguishing a good essay from mediocre one. “This is machine learning and there is a long way to go, but it’s good enough and the upside is huge,” he told the New York Times . Also, he says, anyone who thinks teachers are consistent is fooling herself. “We found that the quality of the grading is similar to the variation you find from instructor to instructor.”

In fact, some studies have suggested that computers and teachers prodce the same sort of variability in scores. One study by Mark Shermis at the University of Akron concluded that “automated essay scoring was capable of producing scores similar to human scores for extended-response writing items with equal performance for both source-based and traditional writing genre.” Shermis’s study, however, was never published in a journal, and other researchers have questioned its claims. Les C. Perelman from MIT wrote a response to the Shermis paper , writing that “a close examination of the paper’s methodology and the datasets used demonstrates that such a claim is not supported by the data in the study.”

The group of professionals also cite several paper suggesting that computers aren’t as good as teachers at evaluating students.

Most likely, this is a question of whether or not these computers are good enough at grading yet, not whether they will ever be. But it’s not just teachers who will get more high tech, students will too. If students learn what the program is looking for, they could simply write a program themselves to in turn write the perfect essay based on the softwares specifications. Perhaps in the future, computerized teachers will be grading computerized students.

Let us consider the following scenario.

You have enrolled in a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) offered by a world renowned university.

After four weeks of solid work you have completed your first assignment and you sit down to upload the essay. Within a second of the essay being sent for grading your result appears declaring your essay to be a less than stellar effort.

But the essay might not have even been seen by a human, but instead been graded entirely by a computer system comparing your essay to sample essays in a database.

EdX , a non-profit MOOC provider founded by Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology , introduced automated essay grading capability in a software upgrade earlier this year.

But should automated grading systems be used for essays? And how good are these systems anyway?

The MOOC phenomena

The hype surrounding MOOCs reached fever pitch last year. MOOCs were initially brought to us by prestigious American universities – offering the same content that students paid for, to anyone for free.

Australian universities soon jumped on board and homegrown MOOC platforms quickly followed.

Australian schools and universities have been using automated grading systems for multiple-choice and true-false tests for many years.

But edX has moved one step further using artificial intelligence technology to grade essays – a controversial step given this approach is yet to be accepted.

EdX’s president, Anant Agarwal told the New York Times earlier this month that “instant grading software would be a useful pedagogical tool, enabling students to take tests and write essays over and over and improve the quality of their answers.” Agarwal said the use of artificial intelligence technologies to grade essays had “distinct advantages over the traditional classroom system, where students often wait days or weeks for grades.”

Robot graders

Automated grading systems that assess written test answers have been around since the 1960s when the first mainframe computers were introduced.

The New York Times reports that four US states (Louisiana, North Dakota, Utah and West Virginia) now use automated essay grading systems in secondary schools and in some situations the software is used as a backup which provides a check on the human assessors.

Automated essay grading relies upon the system being trained with a set of example essays that have been hand-scored. It then learns from the example essays and results provided for other student’s essays, and includes an analysis of indicators about phrases, keywords, sentence and paragraph construction.

Automated essay grading systems can be fine-tuned by getting humans to grade a sub-set of the submitted essays. But this limits the ability of the automated grading system to provide instantaneous results and feedback.

The artificial intelligence technology can then step in to make the process more sophisticated, using knowledge gained from human marked essays.

Can a computer really grade an essay?

There has not been general acceptance for the use of artificial intelligence technologies within automated grading systems. And recent moves by online education organisations to use artificial intelligence technologies for high-stakes testing has caused concern among academia.

This concern culminated in an online petition against machine scoring of essays launched earlier this year by a group of concerned academics and research staff. Over 3,600 signatures have been collected so far including from high profile intellectuals like Noam Chomsky.

A statement on the petition website argues that “computers cannot ‘read’. They cannot measure the essentials of effective written communication: accuracy, reasoning, adequacy of evidence, good sense, ethical stance, convincing argument, meaningful organisation, clarity, and veracity, among others.”

Les Perelman, a researcher at MIT, is highly critical of automated grading systems and has provided a critique of the state-of-the-art of artificial intelligence technology use in automated essay grading systems.

Perelman states that “comparing the performance of human graders matching each other to the machines matching the resolved score still gives some indication that the human raters may be significantly more reliable than machines.”

In June 2012, Perelman submitted a nonsense essay to the US Educational Testing Service’s (ETS) automated grading systems called e-Rater and received the highest possible grade.

ETS uses the e-Rater software, in conjunction with human assessors, to grade the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) and Test Of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), without human intervention for practice tests.

Both these tests are high stakes – the former decides entrance to US graduate schools and the latter the fate of non-English speakers wishing to study at American universities.

Testing times

In the rush to adopt MOOCs, Australian universities may skip important debates on what forms of assessment are acceptable and how to ensure educational outcomes are valid.

Central to the value of MOOCs as a pedagogical tool is the method used to assess course participants.

Should Computers Grade Essays?

Todd Farley is the scourge of standardized testing. His book, “Making the Grades,” is a shocking exposé of the industry. Todd spent nearly 15 years scoring tests, and he knows the tricks of the trade.

In this article , he skewers the latest testing craze: machine-scoring of essays.

Having demonstrated the fallibility of humans who score essays, Farley is no more impressed by computer scoring. As he puts it:

“…the study’s major finding states only that “the results demonstrated that overall, automated essay scoring was capable of producing scores similar to human scores for extended-response writing items.” A paragraph on p. 21 reiterates the same thing: “By and large, the scoring engines did a good [job] of replicating the mean scores for all of the data sets.” In other words, all this hoopla about a study Tom Vander Ark calls “groundbreaking” is based on a final conclusion saying only that automated essay scoring engines are able to spew out a number that “by and large” might be “similar” to what a bored, over-worked, under-paid, possibly-underqualified, temporarily-employed human scorer skimming through an essay every two minutes might also spew out. I ask you, has there ever been a lower bar?”

Farley quotes the promoters of automated scoring, who say that the machines are faster, cheaper and more consistent than humans. Also, they make money.

He concludes: “Maybe a technology that purports to be able to assess a piece of writing without having so much as the teensiest inkling as to what has been said is good enough for your country, your city, your school, or your child. I’ll tell you what though: Ain’t good enough for mine.”

One of the responses to Farley’s post came from Tom Vander Ark, who is a tech entrepreneur and a target of Farley’s post.

Vander Ark wrote: “The purpose of the study was to demonstrate that online essay scoring was as accurate as expert human graders and that proved to be the case across a diverse set of performance tasks. The reason that was important is that without online scoring, states would rely solely on inexpensive multiple choice tests. It is silly to suggest that scoring engines need to ‘understand,’ they just need to score at least as well as a trained expert grader and our study did just that.”

A reader of this blog saw this exchange on Huffington Post and sent me this comment:

“Diane–we use an automated essay scorer at my school, and I have seen coherent, well-thought out writing receive scores below proficient, while incoherent, illogical writing (with more and longer words, and a few other tricks that automated scorers like) receive high scores. The students who suffer the most are the highest level students, the verbally gifted writers who write with the goal of actually being understood, “silly” as that may be.”

“In fact, all standardized testing penalizes the brightest students–those who think outside the box. Standardized testing is the box.”

Technology is becoming more and more important in schools and education, but is there a limit to what computers should do in the classroom?

In “New Test for Computers: Grading Essays at College Level,” John Markoff writes about new software that many college professors, especially those teaching massively open online courses, or MOOCs, are likely to use.

Imagine taking a college exam, and, instead of handing in a blue book and getting a grade from a professor a few weeks later, clicking the “send” button when you are done and receiving a grade back instantly, your essay scored by a software program. And then, instead of being done with that exam, imagine that the system would immediately let you rewrite the test to try to improve your grade. EdX, the nonprofit enterprise founded by Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to offer courses on the Internet, has just introduced such a system and will make its automated software available free on the Web to any institution that wants to use it. The software uses artificial intelligence to grade student essays and short written answers, freeing professors for other tasks. The new service will bring the educational consortium into a growing conflict over the role of automation in education. Although automated grading systems for multiple-choice and true-false tests are now widespread, the use of artificial intelligence technology to grade essay answers has not yet received widespread endorsement by educators and has many critics.

I don’t think I would feel too good about a computer grading my essays as in the article it stated that one of the critics said a computer could not measure accuracy, reasoning, adequacy of evidence, good sense, ethical stance, convincing argument, meaningful organization, clarity, and veracity in your essay. If this is true I don’t believe a computer would be able to measure my full capabilities and grade me fairly. Even though teachers take much more time to give back feedback there feedback is more meaningful as they could understand the reasoning of the essays much better. I believe a computer would be able to give me effective feedback but it wouldn’t be been as effective as a teachers feedback. I do care weather my teacher reads my essays as I believe my teacher would be able to grade me better than anyone else ,but I don’t believe I work hard just to impress my teacher. It is stated in the article that getting instant feedback has a huge impact on the time it takes to improve your essays. I don’t think this would be the case for me because I don’t think I would have the motivation to improve my essays unless I hear a teacher’s feedback.

I wouldn’t feel confortable if my children were underdone to a school method like that. Considering my previous experience as a student, I state it is very important to them write and review their own mistakes by themselves, without an automatic system. Assuming that a computerized system would be the responsable for correcting their tests, it wouldn’t consider different opinion, since it would be set up to an only option. So, it wouldn’t fair enough and wouldn’t encourage children to have different calls. Saying that, I keep on thinking the old method, which has been making by teachers, is the best option until now. However, I’m not opposed to others surveys and attempts to improve school methods. My opinion it is not based on impressing teachers, but only to prepare children to face job market up properly.

I would not be astonished because technology is taking over. I think a computer will not grade fairly because how can they grade an essay. I would most likely trust a teacher grade than a computer. Well, I think that computer was created to help people, and use it for grading essays is nothing new. It is just one step more as technology’s advances. We can’t forget that computer follow people’s instructions quickly and it helps to do works in less time. We must not forget that computer’s software is created for human and computer couldn’t think itself. It wants to say that computer does the same as human but in quickly way. I agree that computer grading your essays because we could see almost immediately our essay’s score and it will help us to correct them without waiting long time to know our score. The new technology is more and more important in the actual society and it’s very helpful. The software founded by Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technologies is a proof of the scientific labor but not in the human relations. If you consider that a computer is able to judge a student work, so a human work, you consider that this work come down to a product, a software. It depends also the sort of work because if you have to give an answer like yes or no, the computer should graduate the essay. But I think it’s a very little part of the teacher work which, generally, is more focused on the critical works to develop the student mind. It’s obvious a computer is not be able to judge the qualities of the ideas, of the dissertation. What’s more, the intelligence artificial that I think is superficial like its name, is not be able to give a feedback in order to help the student. Can you imagine a relation y an interesting exchange computer/student? Can you imagine a binary society that should work with 0 and 1? We have to protect the human relations because the acknowledgment is not just in fact is also an experience.

I would think that is not possible that a computer grading our essays because really sometime the computer isn’t intelligent like the people resume. That isn’t a human and it will not take a good deduction. I’d like that my teacher always reads my essays, but if an exam is multiple-choice or true-false, I trust that the computer really can do it.

I wouldn’t feel good about computer grading system for essay. Computer is a system. It doesn’t have brain. A teacher knows very well about grading system. I would feel comfortable with teacher’s grading system more than computer’s grading system. A teacher understands what qualification his students have but a computer doesn’t understand about this situation. I don’t think that computer would give me feedback how I will improve my essays. A teacher can give us effective feedback about our essays more than a computer.

I wouldn’t like there’s nothing better that teacher grade us, because he can explain us why is incorrect and can guide us to do it better. I will be confused the computer can give us the grade and mistakes but not the method to do it better so people become lazy and want the computer correct everything. Yes I would like that my teacher read my teacher he will give me the best methods to do it better and I can impress him. I will feel bad there’s nothing to feel anxious when the teacher gives us a grade and also we can see the face that he puts when something is wrong or good.

I don’t think a computer could evaluate my essays as a human being would do it. One of the thousands of reasons why is because as much as technology is advanced, computers can’t realize certain ideas as human’s brains do. I think students would be under a very psychological pressure. I think students who don’t speak English very well (like me) would waste more time thinking about writing without mistakes than writing down information to pursue the reader. It is not a good idea!

I will certainly be not comfortable with the fact that computer is going to check my exam because it is a technology and it could make a mistake. We can trust computer but not always. It might grade us fairly but there isn’t any guarantee, but teacher will be more focused on our overall mistakes and will tell us our weaknesses. Computer won’t give us an effective feedback on how to improve our essay. Off course, we care that teacher checks our essay rather than a computer. Getting a grade instantly would be ok because whatever you do in an exam, eventually you get to know it and people don’t have practice to wait until teacher gives their exams back, so I think this will be the only positive point that you will know your mistake and try to get over it.

I do not think a computer that grades essays would be ideal. Although it is fast and easy, there are many things to question. First off, I do not think the computers would grade fairly. Teachers have a better understanding of what your writing means and a computer could not figure that out. A benefit would be the instant grade you recieve, but a disadvantage would be the worry that the score is not accurate. I personally do not think computers should grade essays. Even though it takes time by hand, teachers should remain to grade as they have always done.

i think it would be earier to have a computer to grade our tests because sometimes when teachers grade them they get it wrong and we get a lower grade then we should. It would be way faster for you to get your grade backthe to have your teacher take weeks just to give you your grade.

Although technology is taking over, I don’t think it would be a healthy feedback method. Computers, while meticulous and quick, cannot feel, or form opinions, or understand one’s personal opinion and recognize the diffferences. A computer understands right and wrong, and can only be programmed to do so. Teachers, however, can give healthy feedback, with their own opinions about the student’s paper. I personally belive that a teacher’s grade would be more accurate than a computer, because a mature adult can conceive ideas such as blasphemy, ethics, racism, and therefore think, yes, think, about the paper and how well it represents the student’s opinion. A teacher and a student, even if they dislike eachother very much, have a more profound bond than a student and a computer. The computer lacks understanding. I would much rather see understanding in my final grade than efficiency.

I wouldn’t like a computer to grade my essay because i feel like it wouldn’t be fair and I like getting feedback from my teacher and a computer wouldn’t do that.

I do not want a computer to grade my papers, because I would trust a grade from my teacher more. We already have a system where it grades it automatically this system is flawed and is more like to make errors. Computers can be helpful to a certain extent. Computer lack an emotion to feel and that can make or break a paper at times, I want my teachers to read my paper. If not people will just write to the formula that they think that the computer wants. I think we need the wait and the anticipation to strive. Or else we will become even more of a society based on instant gratification.

Who can really say until we know how this system works? I mean, everyone knows that spellcheckers aren’t always right because they don’t understand context, so how will this computerized grader know how to go behind grading usage and mechanics. A good essay involves so much more than that and I don’t know how a computer can understand smooth transitions or a clever turn of phrase. Students love to gripe about how long teachers take with grades but instantaneous is too quick. How can an essay be properly graded so speedily? This is not a math problem that has only right answer. Also, how can the feedback a computer gives match the carefully considered comments a teacher leaves in the margins or at the end of your paper? I very much doubt that a computer analyzing my use of grammar will make me feel warm and fuzzy the way my english teacher writing “a pleasurable read” or “interesting and effective” does.

Absurd! Ever look at translation software results? Pathetic. And yet these digital heads and corporate suits who want only bottom-line profits think software can grade much less understand a human’s holistic writing. What’s next, software for Got?

What would happen if the person that sends in the essay was special ed or has any other mental difference. If this system were to go world wide, there would only be one thing that teachers could teach. Everybody in the world would have to learn the same thing at the same time. There would be no such thing as educational differentiation. Every essay would have to then be graded on the same things. A teacher could no longer look at the class they are teaching and decide what strengths the class needs to learn. If a student or class did not get a subject, the teacher would have to keep going in the program, instead of staying on that subject. This essay grader is a really bad idea.

I would feel good hearing the fact that computer are grading essay. Yes I think computer can grade our fairly because the computer know every things. If they were computer grading our essay they could easily tell us what is wrong with the essay. I don’t care if my teacher is reading my essay I only care about passing I want to know if I am doing it right.

Long and Short Computer Essay

The term computer was once used to refer to a person who did computation, unlike today. The development of early prototypes that led to the modern computer is credited to many individuals throughout history. A series of breakthroughs, beginning with transistor computers and then integrated circuit computers, resulted in the development of transistor technology and the integrated circuit chip, causing digital computers to largely replace analogue computers. 

In this essay, we will discuss the various components and types of computers and talk about their uses in various fields.

Long Computer Essay in English

A computer is an electronic tool that manipulates data or information. It can store, retrieve, and process information. We can type documents, send emails, play games, and browse the Web using a computer. It can also be used to edit spreadsheets, presentations, and even videos, or create them. 

Early computers were conceived only as devices for calculating. Simple manual devices such as the abacus have helped individuals do calculations since ancient times. Some mechanical devices were built early in the Industrial Revolution to automate long, tedious tasks, such as guiding patterns for looms. In the early 20th century, more sophisticated electrical machines performed specialized analogue calculations. 

Common Components of Computers

All those parts of a computer that are tangible physical objects are covered under the term hardware. The hardware includes circuits, computer chips, graphics cards, sound cards, memory (RAM), motherboards, displays, power supplies, cables, keyboards, printers and "mice" input devices.

 There are five main hardware components: 

Input Devices: 

These are devices that are used to enter data/information in the central processing unit. Example- keyboard, mouse, scanner, document reader, barcode reader, optical character reader, magnetic reader etc.

Output Devices: 

These are devices that provide the processed data/information into human-readable form. Example- monitor, printer, speaker, projector etc.

Control Unit: 

The control unit handles the various components of the computer; it reads and interprets (decodes) the instructions for the program, transforming them into control signals that activate other computer parts.

Arithmetic Logic Unit: 

It is capable of performing arithmetical and logical functions. The set of arithmetic operations supported by a specific ALU may be restricted to addition and subtraction or may include functions of multiplication, division, trigonometries such as sine, cosine, etc., and square roots.

Central Processing Unit: 

The ALU, control unit and registers and together called the CPU. It is sometimes called the computer's brain, and its job is to perform commands. We send instructions to the CPU whenever we press a key, click the mouse, or start an application.

Software refers to computer parts, such as programs, data, protocols, etc., that do not have a material form. In contrast to the physical hardware from which the system is built, the software is that portion of a computer system consisting of encoded information or computer instructions.

It is sometimes called "firmware" when the software is stored in hardware that can not be easily modified, such as with a BIOS ROM on an IBM PC compatible computer.

Computer hardware and software require each other, and neither of them can be realistically used on their own. There are four main components of a general-purpose computer: the arithmetic logic unit (ALU), the control unit, the memory, and the I/O (collectively called input and output) devices.

Uses of Computer

Computers are used in various fields, such as homes, businesses, government offices, research organizations, educational institutions, medicine, entertainment, etc. because of their features and powerful functions. They have taken sectors and companies to a whole new level.

Science- 

Computers are best suited for the collection, analysis, categorization, and storage of data in science, research and engineering. They also help scientists to exchange data both internally and internationally with each other.

Government-  

Computers in the government sector are used to perform various functions and improve their services. In most cases, data processing tasks, the maintenance of citizens' databases, and the promotion of a paperless environment are the primary purposes of using computers. In addition to this, computers play a key role in the country's defence system.

Health and Medicine- 

They are used to preserve information, records, live patient monitoring, X-rays, and more from patients. Computers assist in setting up laboratory tools, monitoring heart rate and blood pressure, etc. Besides, computers allow physicians to easily exchange patient data with other medical specialists.

Education- 

They help people get different educational materials (such as images, videos, e-books, etc.) in one place. Also, computers are best suited for online classes, online tutoring, online exams, and task and project creation. Also, they can be used to maintain and track student performance and other data.

Banking- 

Most countries use online banking systems so that customers can access their data directly. People can verify the balance of their account, transfer cash, and pay online bills, including credit cards. Besides, banks use computers to execute transactions and store client information, transaction records, etc.

Mainframe Computers-

Super Computer- 

Among all types of computers, supercomputers are the fastest and most costly computers. They have an enormous capacity for storage and computing speeds and can therefore perform millions of instructions per second.

Workstations-  

It is a single-user computer with a comparatively more powerful microprocessor and a high-quality monitor compared to a mini-computer.

Title: thinking fair and slow: on the efficacy of structured prompts for debiasing language models.

Abstract: Existing debiasing techniques are typically training-based or require access to the model's internals and output distributions, so they are inaccessible to end-users looking to adapt LLM outputs for their particular needs. In this study, we examine whether structured prompting techniques can offer opportunities for fair text generation. We evaluate a comprehensive end-user-focused iterative framework of debiasing that applies System 2 thinking processes for prompts to induce logical, reflective, and critical text generation, with single, multi-step, instruction, and role-based variants. By systematically evaluating many LLMs across many datasets and different prompting strategies, we show that the more complex System 2-based Implicative Prompts significantly improve over other techniques demonstrating lower mean bias in the outputs with competitive performance on the downstream tasks. Our work offers research directions for the design and the potential of end-user-focused evaluative frameworks for LLM use.

CVPR Technical Program Features Presentations on the Latest AI and Computer Vision Research

LOS ALAMITOS, Calif., 16 May 2024 – Co-sponsored by the IEEE Computer Society (CS) and the Computer Vision Foundation (CVF), the 2024 Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR) Conference is the preeminent event for research and development (R&D) in the hot topic areas of computer vision, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), augmented, virtual and mixed reality (AR/VR/MR), deep learning, and related fields. Over the past decade, these areas have seen significant growth, and the emphasis on this sector by the science and engineering community has fueled an increasingly competitive technical program.

This year, the CVPR Program Committee received 11,532 paper submissions—a 26% increase over 2023—but only 2,719 were accepted, resulting in an acceptance rate of just 23.6%. Of those accepted papers, only 3.3% were slotted for oral presentations based on nominations from the area chairs and senior area chairs overseeing the program.

“CVPR is not only the premiere conference in computer vision, but it’s also among the highest-impact publication venues in all of science,” said David Crandall, Professor of Computer Science at Indiana University, Bloomington, Ind., U.S.A., and CVPR 2024 Program Co-Chair. “Having one’s paper accepted to CVPR is already a major achievement, and then having it selected as an oral presentation is a very rare honor that reflects its high quality and potential impact.”

Taking place 17-21 June at the Seattle Convention Center in Seattle, Wash., U.S.A., CVPR offers oral presentations that speak to both fundamental and applied research in areas as diverse as healthcare applications, robotics, consumer electronics, autonomous vehicles, and more. Examples include:

  • Pathology: Transcriptomics-guided Slide Representation Learning in Computational Pathology *– Training computer systems for pathology requires a multi-modal approach for efficiency and accuracy. New work from a multi-disciplinary team at Harvard University (Cambridge, Mass., U.S.A.), the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT; Cambridge, Mass., U.S.A.), Emory University (Atlanta, Ga., U.S.A.) and others employs modality-specific encoders, and when applied on liver, breast, and lung samples from two different species, they demonstrated significantly better performance when compared to current baselines.
  • Robotics: SceneFun3D: Fine-Grained Functionality and Affordance Understanding in 3D Scenes – Creating realistic interactions in 3D scenes has been troublesome from a technology perspective because it has been difficult to manipulate objects in the scene context. Research from ETH Zürich (Zürich, Switzerland), Google (Mountainview, Calif., U.S.A.), Technical University of Munich (TUM; Munich, Germany), and Microsoft (Redmond, Wash., U.S.A.) has begun bridging that divide by creating a large-scale dataset with more than 14.8k highly accurate interaction annotations for 710 high-resolution real-world 3D indoor scenes. This work, as the paper concludes, has the potential to “stimulate advancements in embodied AI, robotics, and realistic human-scene interaction modeling.”
  • Virtual Reality: URHand: Universal Relightable Hands – Teams from Codec Avatars Lab at Meta (Menlo Park, Calif., U.S.A.) and Nanyang Technological University (Singapore) unveil a hand model that generalizes to novel viewpoints, poses, identities, and illuminations, which enables quick personalization from a phone scan. The resulting images make for a more realistic experience of reaching, grabbing, and interacting in a virtual environment.
  • Human Avatars: Semantic Human Mesh Reconstruction with Textures – Working to create realistic human models, teams at Nanjing University (Nanjing, China) and Texas A&M University (College Station, Texas, U.S.A.) designed a method of 3-D human mesh reconstruction that is capable of producing high-fidelity and robust semantic renderings that outperform state-of-the-art methods. The paper concludes, “This approach bridges existing monocular reconstruction work and downstream industrial applications, and we believe it can promote the development of human avatars.”
  • Text-to-Image Systems: Ranni: Taming Text-to-Image Diffusion for Accurate Instruction – Existing text-to-image models can misinterpret more difficult prompts, but now, new research from Alibaba Group (Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China) and Ant Group (Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China) has made strides in addressing that issue via a middleware layer. This approach, which they have dubbed Ranni, supports the text-to-image generator in better following instructions. As the paper sums up, “Ranni shows potential as a flexible chat-based image creation system, where any existing diffusion model can be incorporated as the generator for interactive generation.”
  • Autonomous Driving: Producing and Leveraging Online Map Uncertainty in Trajectory Prediction – To enable autonomous driving, vehicles must be pre-trained on the geographic region and potential pitfalls. High-definition (HD) maps have become a standard part of a vehicle’s technology stack, but current approaches to those maps are siloed in their programming. Now, work from a research team from the University of Toronto (Toronto, Ontario, Canada), Vector Institute (Toronto, Ontario, Canada), NVIDIA Research (Santa Clara, Calif., U.S.A.), and Stanford University (Palo Alto, Calif., U.S.A.) enhances current methodologies by incorporating uncertainty, resulting in up to 50% faster training convergence and up to 15% better prediction performance.

“As the field’s leading event, CVPR introduces the latest research in all areas of computer vision,” said Crandall. “In addition to the oral paper presentations, there will be thousands of posters, dozens of workshops and tutorials, several keynotes and panels, and countless opportunities for learning and networking. Rudy Giuliani Claims He Tipped Off Arizona Agents Trying to Serve Him Indictment Papers, Despite Gloating Online About Evading Them

After evading Arizona agents for weeks, Rudy Giuliani was finally served with indictment papers over the weekend for trying to overturn the 2020 election. The exchange took place in Palm Beach, outside of the first of two 80th birthday parties for the ex-mayor of New York City.

Giuliani was served not long after he took to social media to mock Arizona attorney general Kris Mayes, saying in a since-deleted post on X: “If Arizona authorities can’t find me by tomorrow morning: 1. They must dismiss the indictment; 2. They must concede they can’t count votes.” The note was accompanied by a photo of a grinning Giuliani surrounded by four blondes, a brunette, a young guy with black hair, and balloons. Just several hours later, Mayes responded : “The final defendant was served moments ago. @RudyGiuliani nobody is above the law.”

The following day, Giuliani claimed that “contrary to reports from journalists who weren’t there, our early 80th birthday celebration wasn’t ‘ruined’ or interrupted.” On Sunday, he explained that he “had just found out they were looking for me 24 hours before” the party, adding, “I told them where I would be and I accepted service like a gentleman!” In a statement, Giuliani spokesman Ted Goodman told The Washington Post that the former attorney to Donald Trump “was served after the party and as he was walking to the car,” noting that he was looking “forward to full vindication soon.” Goodman claimed that Giuliani was “unfazed.” (As the Post reported earlier this month, Arizona prosecutors could have ultimately issued a warrant for his arrest.)

The Arizona charges are, of course, not the only problem currently plaguing Giuliani. He has also been charged in Georgia ( where he’s pleaded not guilty ) for trying to overturn the election there, and he owes a cool $148 million to the 2020 election workers he was found liable for defaming.

It Is Inexcusable How Judge Cannon Is Delaying the Trump Documents Case

Mr. Greer was a lawyer in the Central Intelligence Agency’s Office of General Counsel from 2010 to 2018.

The task before Judge Aileen Cannon, who is presiding over the classified documents case of Donald Trump, is not easy. She must protect Mr. Trump’s constitutional rights while also ensuring the prompt and fair administration of justice.

Still, it is inexcusable that she is utterly failing to keep the case moving along in a fair but timely manner. And unfortunately, there isn’t much that the special counsel in the case, Jack Smith, can do about it.

While working as an attorney in the C.I.A.’s Office of General Counsel, I developed an expertise in Espionage Act prosecutions similar to the one pending against Mr. Trump, who is accused of illegally taking classified state documents from the White House after he left office and then obstructing the government’s repeated efforts to retrieve them. I know firsthand that cases like this can be quite complicated and lengthy.

But outside of the unique issues raised by Mr. Trump’s status as a former president (for example, immunity and the Presidential Records Act), the prosecution against him is actually not particularly complex. The volume of classified records subject to discovery is not outside the norm, and if the defendant were not Donald Trump, this would be a relatively routine Espionage Act prosecution for unlawful retention of classified records.

With a competent and determined judge, Mr. Trump’s due process rights could have been well protected and the trial could have reasonably been set for this summer. However, this is not the first time Judge Cannon — a Trump appointee — has granted delay after delay, and thanks to a recent scheduling order , it’s now all but certain that the case will not go to trial until after Election Day.

If Mr. Trump wins the election, the case will be effectively over. The Trump Justice Department would almost certainly dismiss the indictment at his behest when the clock strikes noon on Jan. 20, 2025.

One way of taking a measure of how Judge Cannon has failed is by looking at the progress of pretrial litigation, which started soon after Mr. Trump was indicted in June 2023. In a criminal trial, the purpose of pretrial litigation is threefold: to ensure the defense gets access to all discoverable material; to resolve “dispositive” motions that could result in dismissal of the case if granted, like Mr. Trump’s presidential immunity assertion; and to determine what the trial will look like. The latter is an especially important task here given that Mr. Trump is charged with illegally mishandling some of our most closely guarded secrets, which could be further compromised depending on how they are used at a public trial.

Measured against these goals, Judge Cannon has made almost no progress over the past 11 months. That is shocking and indefensible.

On the scope of discovery, Judge Cannon has failed to rule on Mr. Trump’s motion — filed four months ago — to compel additional discovery from the government. Under her new schedule, she may not rule on it until July. A ruling granting Mr. Trump’s motion could result in months of additional delays.

The discovery and use of classified information is one of the thornier issues in cases of this nature. Here, too, the judge has made almost no progress, and her inexperience is showing. She has ruled on just one substantive motion with respect to Mr. Trump, which was filed by the government in December and applied to only a sliver of the classified information at issue in the case. Under her new scheduling order, the next phase of litigation involving classified information won’t begin until mid-June. Judge Cannon won’t even begin to address the difficult questions about how classified information will be used and disclosed at trial until August at the earliest, even though Mr. Trump’s team has had access to over 90 percent of the classified discovery since last fall.

On efforts to dismiss the case, in February, Mr. Trump made seven such motions, and so far Judge Cannon has ruled on only two. Some of them are plainly frivolous, but she has insisted on extensive hearings for each one, some of which have not been held yet.

Finally, Judge Cannon has not yet addressed a single substantive issue that will determine what the trial looks like. The most difficult issues she needs to address lie ahead, including those involving presidential immunity, attorney-client privilege and, most important, how this highly classified information will be used and protected at trial. She won’t even start resolving these issues until August at the earliest — over 14 months after Mr. Trump was indicted.

At the same time, Judge Cannon has displayed an extremely high tolerance for delay tactics from Mr. Trump’s defense team — or shenanigans, as we called them when I worked on such cases. For instance, she has wasted two months addressing Mr. Trump’s efforts to publicly expose witness information in his court filings. Most federal judges would quickly shut down these tactics, but this judge seems to invite them, and the delays they cause.

It is thus impossible to conclude that Judge Cannon is diligently moving the case forward as she has claimed. While some minor delays have been warranted to protect Mr. Trump’s rights, especially in light of his other pending prosecutions, the overall speed of the case remains glacial — seemingly by design.

Outside of the unwarranted delays, Judge Cannon has shown a repeated willingness to entertain extreme arguments from the Trump legal team. For instance, she seriously considered adopting the position, via a jury instruction, that Mr. Trump had unreviewable authority to designate highly classified government documents as his own “personal” records under the Presidential Records Act. Rather than squarely rejecting this absurd argument, she instead refused to rule on it until closer to trial, leaving prosecutors in a lurch.

Despite these issues, Mr. Smith, the special counsel, will not be able to seek the judge’s removal from the case anytime soon, if ever. There is a very high bar for removal, and scheduling delays alone are insufficient reason. Still, the more significant issues to be decided lie ahead, and it’s possible that one or more frivolous rulings from Judge Cannon could cause Mr. Smith to seek her removal on appeal.

However, the time necessary to resolve such an appeal will almost certainly push a trial past the November election.

The rule of law depends in part on fair, impartial judges. When judges put their finger on the scale, as Judge Cannon appears to have done, it undermines public confidence in our justice system. Moreover, failing to hold Mr. Trump accountable will have the compound effect of undermining our credibility on national security matters — by sending the message that a former president can knowingly compromise the trusted secrets of our foreign allies with impunity.

The world is watching, and Judge Cannon is proving that she is not fit for this moment.
