is kind of like , except instead of a half-breed hunting vampires, there's a half-breed hunting demons.
Sean Patrick Flanery stars as Jake Greyman, a man/demon who makes his living by tracking down (and destroying) demons that have taken human form. Jake receives his assignments from the Catholic Church, and his latest gig brings him face-to-face with a particularly nasty creature named Asmodeus (Billy Drago). Along with a nun named Sara (Colleen Porch), Jake must stop Asmodeus before he is able to impregnate a prostitute with his evil demon seed.
establishes its off-kilter sensibility early on, with a sequence in which Jake - after waiting patiently for a Priest to attempt an exorcism - takes matters into his own hands and essentially murders the possessed girl (thus solving the problem, admittedly). But it doesn't take long for the movie to sink into irrelevance, thanks to Mitch Gould's astoundingly talky screenplay. Gould packs the proceedings with nonsensical dialogue that comes off as nothing more than religious claptrap, and there's absolutely no denying that the relentless speechifying eventually becomes mind-numbing and oppressive.
Having said that, Flanery is surprisingly effective as the titular character - infusing Jake with a world-weary, thoroughly grizzled sort of vibe. Likewise, Drago delivers an expectedly sinister performance - though he'll probably never top his turn as Al Capone's sneering henchman in . The end result is a film that's not quite as bad as one might've expected, though given the quality of some of 's contemporaries, that's not exactly high praise.
: arrives on DVD courtesy of Anchor Bay Entertainment, armed with an anamorphic transfer and a few bonus features (including a behind-the-scenes featurette on the making of the film, a commentary track, and more).
Demon Hunter Review
After she is captured by police for questioning in the slaying of a man she claimed was a demon, Taryn Barker must prove her innocence, and the existence of demons. But when a cult captures the daughter of one of the detectives on the case, the police must trust, and unleash, this warrior on the Satantic group who are intent on bringing an ancient evil force into the world.
I’ve been sent lots of cool films lately but sadly Demon Hunter isn’t one of them.
With acting as low budget as the film itself I got myself to the point of catatonic boredom after only a 15 minutes runtime. Resorting to gaffa taping my eyes open throughout the rest of the movie just to complete this small disinterested review. A smaller review being the kinder of two evils without me going into a tirade of abuse. I’m nice even when I’m hating on a film! I’m a fan, not a critic remember.
I couldn’t connect to this particular film, everything felt disjointed and weird. Every cast member in this movie felt as thou they should be playing different roles or background roles out of the spotlight. Dropping corny catchphrases before a stylish kill is usually something I look forward to in films, it’s one of the main reasons I watch Deadpool so often. But in Demon Hunter the lines fell flat and it was a head in hands moment when the first corny one liner landed.
Usually with these kind of movies I just sit back and root for the bad guys. But no one in the film was believable for me to root for anyone sadly. It’s one of those films that you watch and think that you’d actually have a legitimate shot at getting cast in this movie. Then you feel an overwhelming sense of motivation to go out and get a role in a film genre you love.
I read a review quote that said this film keeps on the gas until the credits roll. I’m not quite sure what gas said person was inhaling to write that but they certainly were not watching Demon Hunter.
Everyone looked bored, hopeless and disinterested in anything they were doing on screen and I don’t blame them for feeling that way.
One of the worst Horror films i’ve seen all year. Eeesh.
Demon Hunter
Sadly the cast looked as bored as I did making this movie. If there is one saving grace that pushed me to awarding it one star, it’s the cover artwork which is nothing short of amazing.

“In The Final War Between Heaven & Hell, Pray He’s On Your Side.”
Working for the church, demon hunter Jake Greyman follows up with brute force and violence when an exorcism fails. But, something bigger is at play now and Jake is tasked with hunting it down and stopping it. He won’t be alone though as his superior, Cardinal White, sends a special Nun to help him. Jake fights evil and keeps Sister Sara out of trouble, as he hunts down the demon of Lust to send him back to Hell.
The performances from the main cast didn’t help much either. Sean Patrick Flannery is a quality actor but comes across as more irritated or subdued (depending on the situation) than a brooding hero. I think that addressing the issues previously mentioned might have made his performance make more sense, but we will never know. Billy Drago ( The Hills Have Eyes, The Untouchables ) was cast as the main demon antagonist Asmodeus. His performance was aloof. I don’t know if this was a choice by the director or not, but it made the character appear to not care if his plan succeeded or not.
The story really needed to push an armageddon scenario harder than it did. Again, Asmodeus seemed like he was more of a minor threat rather than the world-ending demon they were trying to make him out to be. Perhaps if there were more references to strange occurrences in the world or dark events rapidly occurring off-camera it might seem direr. I never felt like the situation was more than the hero could handle. It felt like a weekend gig for Jake. In fact, the ending just serves into this feeling.
There are a couple of fight sequences, and the best-looking one is between Jake and some bodyguards in a cemetery. Sean Patrick Flannery appears to do some of the fight work himself and was convincing in these moments. His stunt double did a good job making most of the moves look smooth.
Demon Hunter is ultimately boring. It seems to drag and drag and I didn’t get truly excited until seconds before the credits. [SPOILER] By this time, Jake has decided to leave the church and fight evil his own way. [END OF SPOILER] If that had happened earlier in the movie, I probably would have been more interested in what happens to our hero.
Jack Savage:
I didn’t go into the film with high expectations, but I was still surprised by how little I cared about anything happening in the film. Bad effects? Bad acting? That was expected, but adding the boring and weak story makes me wonder how this was greenlit for production. If you are a hardcore Sean Patrick Flannery fan, then maybe you’ll want to check this out. Anyone else will probably fall asleep before the credits roll.

Most accurate rating of this movie ever. I was expecting more from Flannery and Drago. I have seen some good and bad from Flannery, and he always manages to pull of a good performance, just maybe not in this case.

Hi Jaymes! Thank you for your comment. I had to go watch Devil’s Carnival after watching this as a palate cleanser for Flannery. If you enjoy dark musicals and Aesop’s Fables, I would recommend that over this.

Demon Hunter (2017) Movie Review
Charlie Cargile August 15, 2017 Reviews Comments Off on Demon Hunter (2017) Movie Review
Demon Hunter was directed by Zoe Kavanagh from as script she wrote with Tony Flynn. The film stars Niamh Hogan, Alan Talbot, Sarah Tapes Jenkinson, Kevin O’Malley, Nic Furlong, Michael Parle, Aisli Moran, Saorla Wright, Lauren Emma Bartlett, Stephanie Alken, Meaghan Gallagher, Margarita Grillis, Dave Duffy, Stephen Gorman, and Mark Schrier.
While I was already expecting to enjoy Demon Hunter , I was pleasantly surprised with how much. So many action horror films end up mindless or try to keep things light with awkward comedy. Demon Hunter was thankfully very character driven and wasn’t afraid to go dark. Yes, there is action and it’s pretty well done but it’s not the focus, its a means to an end. The film is grounded by the excellent characters and their relationships. Niamh Hogan was absolutely phenomenal as Taryn, the eponymous demon hunter. She is a complicated character: She feels guilt for the death of her sister (even though she was powerless to stop it), she has a darkness growing in side her that she is fighting a losing battle with (the more she uses her power, the worse it gets) and she’s willing to sacrifice herself if she can save the people by doing it and she isn’t afraid to die.
While mainly a solitary fighter, when things get rough, she does have a backup team for support including Ethan played wonderfully by Kevin O’Malley. Maybe it’s me just reading too much into it, but Ethan kind of reminded me of Xander from Buffy . It seems he has a crush on Taryn (which she seems oblivious to). He’s not a fighter but he is there to defend her and support her in any way he can when necessary. She’s soon joined by Detective Beckett (played by Alan Talbot), a man who is haunted by a promise he couldn’t keep, who is thrust head first into Taryn’s world when the past catches up with both of them. Talbot does a great job making Beckett a complex character as well as making him a sympathetic one. The ending is sad but hopeful. One minor complaint that I have is the villain of the film felt a little underdeveloped. After watching the film all the way through I wasn’t really sure what his motivation was. He’s built up to be this supremely powerful character but when he finally engages Taryn in their inevitable confrontation, he didn’t feel like much of a threat and their battle was fairly lackluster.
Final Thoughts
In a sea of mindless horror action cinema, Demon Hunter is a pleasant surprise. The film is stylishly shot, features likable and complex characters, and a strong badass heroine that I hope we get to see in a sequel. If films like this are your cup of tea, be sure to check out Demon Hunter when it’s released on August 15 on VOD.

If films like this are your cup of tea, be sure to check out Demon Hunter when it's released on August 15 on VOD.
