Health Benefits of Goat Milk

Goat milk is not all that common in the United States, but other countries—like Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Turkey—produce and drink plenty of goat milk. It can be used just like any other milk, and its nutrient composition is most similar to cow’s milk; they’re both rich in protein, fat, calcium, and vitamin D. However, research shows goat milk may be better for heart health and digestion than cow’s milk.

May Protect Heart Health

Having high cholesterol increases your risk of developing heart disease and stroke, and goat milk appears to be more beneficial for your cholesterol than cow’s milk.  

Studies have found consuming goat milk rather than cow’s milk leads to increased excretion of cholesterol, as opposed to having it stay in the blood. This means goat milk may help reduce cholesterol compared to drinking cow’s milk.

Having high blood pressure also increases your risk of heart disease, and goat milk may help lower your blood pressure, too. The type of casein in goat milk may generate peptides that act like angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors—a medication that helps relax the veins and arteries to lower blood pressure.

Plus, the ratio of omega 6 to omega 3 fatty acids in goat milk is right around the recommended ratio for preventing heart disease.

Goat milk also contains antioxidants that can prevent oxidative damage to cells from free radicals, which can further protect your heart.

Promotes Bone Health

You may know of cow’s milk as a key source of calcium for bone health, but goat milk is another great option to support your bones. It contains several key nutrients for bone health: calcium, vitamin D, and phosphorus.

One cup of goat milk contains 25% of the daily value (DV) for calcium. This mineral helps promote bone density and strength to prevent injury and osteoporosis (a bone disease in which bones become weak and brittle). Plus, vitamin D is essential for calcium absorption, and one cup of fortified goat milk has 15% of the DV for vitamin D.

Phosphorus is another essential component of your bones and teeth. One cup of goat milk contains 22% of the DV for this nutrient. Phosphorus is closely related to calcium because they both give your bones and teeth their structure, and they're regulated by the same hormones.

Is Easier to Digest

People who struggle to digest cow’s milk may tolerate goat milk better.

Goat milk does have lactose and isn’t suitable for people with lactose intolerance. However, it has a higher percentage of short and medium-chain fatty acids than cow’s milk. These kinds of fatty acids are digested more quickly and easily than long-chain fatty acids. Goat milk also contains smaller fat globules than cow’s milk, further increasing its digestibility.

Due to these properties, goat milk may help people with malabsorptive diseases like gallstones, cystic fibrosis, steatorrhea, or intestinal resection to better absorb fats and prevent malnutrition.

As another digestive benefit, goat milk can be a carrier for probiotics that promote a healthy gut microbiome . It also contains oligosaccharides that have prebiotic effects, helping to feed healthy gut bacteria.

Nutrition of Goat Milk

Goat milk has a comparable protein and lactose content to cow’s milk. Just like with cow’s milk, you can get a good amount of calcium and vitamin D from goat’s milk (when choosing a milk product fortified with vitamin D). Each 8-ounce cup of goat milk contains:

• Calories: 168
• Fat: 10 grams (g)
• Sodium: 122 milligrams (mg)
• Carbohydrates: 11 g
• Protein: 9 g
• Potassium: 498 g, or 11% of the DV
• Phosphorus: 271 mg, or 22% of the DV
• Calcium: 327 mg, or 25% of the DV
• Vitamin A: 139 micrograms (mcg) RAE, or 15% of the DV
• Vitamin D : 3.2 mcg, or 15% of the DV

Goat milk is also a good source of potassium, phosphorus, and vitamin A. Getting enough vitamin A is important for eye health, and goat milk has a higher amount than cow’s milk.

The calcium, vitamin D, and phosphorus content in goat milk also make it a good food source for supporting bone health.

Risks of Goat Milk

When you go to the milk section of a major grocery store, you’ll find many options: almond, oat, cow, goat, cashew, soy, pea, and more. Each has a different nutrient composition and different health implications.

Goat milk has a similar protein and lactose content to cow's milk. There are slight differences in their unsaturated and saturated fat content and their sodium and potassium concentrations. However, these minimal differences shouldn’t make a big impact on your health.

Compared to non-dairy options like oat milk or almond milk, goat milk is much higher in protein . If you’re looking for a non-dairy milk that’s high in protein, you can try soy or pea protein milk, which are also free from lactose .  

When shopping for goat milk, you can often find raw or pasteurized options. Pasteurized milk has been heat-treated to get rid of bacteria. Raw goat milk poses food safety risks because it hasn’t been treated to kill off harmful pathogens. For this reason, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) recommends drinking only pasteurized milk.

If you have a cow’s milk allergy, you’ll also need to be careful about goat milk; over 90% of people who are allergic to cow’s milk protein also react to the protein found in goat milk. A recent study did find that the casein in goat milk, which is different from that found in cow’s milk, may not lead to the same allergic response as cow’s milk. However, it's still important to proceed with caution if you have a milk allergy.

Consuming goat milk also contains lactose, which can cause digestive issues for those with lactose intolerance.

Tips for Consuming Goat Milk

Goat milk can be used similarly to any other milk. Here are some ideas for incorporating goat milk into your diet:

• Drink a glass of it plain
• Have it with cereal or granola
• Add it to your coffee
• Have goat milk yogurt as a snack with fruit and granola
• Add goat milk to smoothies
• Use it to make savory dishes like mashed potatoes, curry, or mac and cheese
• Make cajeta—a caramel sauce made with goat milk

A Quick Review

Goat milk is a good source of nutrients for bone health, and it may be better for your cholesterol and blood pressure than cow’s milk. Plus, the types of fats it contains tend to be more easily digested, especially for those with diseases that cause absorption issues. You can enjoy goat milk just like any other milk, so try adding it to your morning coffee or using it to cook with.

The Writers’ Colony at Dairy Hollow (WCDH) is pleased to offer the “Imagination” fellowship which invites writers to explore how imagination has influenced them and others.  Maybe it helped you confront and deal with a problem.  Maybe it helped you form a new idea that changed your life or led you to a creative outlet that you didn't know existed. 

The work may be in any literary genre:  fiction or nonfiction, poetry or prose, drama or screenplay, or a combination.  It may take place now or time the past or may draw upon the life of the author or probe other lives.  There is no expectation of a certain attitude or type of experience.  The successful application will demonstrate insight, honesty, literary merit, and the likelihood of publication or production. Prior publication is not a requirement.

The fellowship winner will receive a two-week residency at WCDH to focus completely on their writing. Each writer’s suite has a bedroom, private bathroom, separate writing space, and wireless internet. We provide uninterrupted writing time, a European-style gourmet dinner prepared five nights a week and served in our community dining room, the camaraderie of other professional writers when desired, and a community kitchen stocked with the basics for other meals.

Fellowship applications must be accompanied by a writing sample and a non-refundable $35 application fee. The Writers’ Colony at Dairy Hollow is pleased to announce the 2023 My Time fellowship funded by the Sustainable Arts Foundation. Writers who are also parents of dependent children under the age of 18 are invited to apply. Work may be any literary genre: poetry, fiction, plays, memoir, screenplays, or nonfiction.  The successful application will demonstrate literary merit and the likelihood of publication. Prior publication is not a requirement.

Two fellowship winners will receive a one-week residency to allow the recipient to focus completely on their work, at least one to be awarded to a Person of Color. A $500 stipend will be provided to cover childcare and/or travel costs. Each writer’s suite has a bedroom, private bathroom, separate writing space, and wireless internet. We provide uninterrupted writing time, a European-style gourmet dinner prepared five nights a week, and served in our community dining room, the camaraderie of other professional writers when you want it, and a community kitchen stocked with the basics for other meals.

The fellowship winner will receive a two-week residency to allow the recipient to focus completely on their work. Each writer’s suite has a bedroom, private bathroom, separate writing space, and wireless internet. What does it mean to be a Southerner in the twenty-first century as old symbols of pride and oppression (depending on one’s perspective) become symbols of shame? This fellowship invites writers to reconsider Southern identity, their own or that of others. The work may be in any genre: fiction or nonfiction, poetry or prose, drama or screenplay, or a combination. It may take place in the past or in the present but should bring fresh insights to the subject of Southern experience and identity. The successful application will also demonstrate honesty, literary merit, and the likelihood of publication or production.

The Writers’ Colony at Dairy Hollow (WCDH) is pleased to offer the Moondancer fellowship for authors who express their love of nature and concern for the environment through their writing. This fellowship is open to poets, fiction writers, playwrights, essayists, columnists, memoirists, and screenwriters. Prior publication is not a requirement. The successful applicant will demonstrate insight, honesty, literary merit, and the likelihood of publication or production. 

Fellowship applications must be accompanied by a writing sample and a non-refundable $35 application fee.  Only one writing project may be proposed per application. Writers proposing more than one project must submit a separate application and fee for each one. The submission period opens on Tuesday, February 1, 2022. The deadline is midnight, CST, on Monday, April 25, 2022.  The winner will be announced no later than May 20, 2022. Residency must be completed by December 31, 2023. The Writers’ Colony at Dairy Hollow is pleased to offer a fellowship for writers working on a picture book for children that tells an engaging, relatable story. The successful application will demonstrate originality, creativity, and the likelihood of publication. Prior publication is not a requirement.

Two fellowship winners will receive a two-week residency to allow the recipients to focus completely on their work. A $400 stipend will be provided to each to cover travel costs and incidentals. Each writer’s suite has a bedroom, private bathroom, separate writing space, and wireless internet. We provide uninterrupted writing time, a European-style gourmet dinner prepared five nights a week, and served in our community dining room, the camaraderie of other professional writers when you want it, and a community kitchen stocked with the basics for other meals.

Rather, the successful application will demonstrate insight, honesty, literary merit, and the likelihood of publication or production.

Writers who are also parents of dependent children under the age of 18 are invited to apply. Work may be any literary genre: fiction or nonfiction, poetry or prose, script or screenplay.  The successful application will demonstrate literary merit and the likelihood of publication. Prior publication is not a requirement.

Two fellowship winners will receive a one-week residency to allow the recipient to focus completely on their work. A $400 stipend will be provided to cover childcare and/or travel costs. Each writer’s suite has a bedroom, private bathroom, separate writing space, and wireless internet. We provide uninterrupted writing time, a European-style gourmet dinner prepared five nights a week, and served in our community dining room, the camaraderie of other professional writers when you want it, and a community kitchen stocked with the basics for other meals.

Candidates should be working on a picture book or chapter book that provides inspiration and hope for those struggling with the hardships and challenges that life often metes out.  The successful application will demonstrate insight, honesty, literary merit, and the likelihood of publication.

Fellowship applications must be accompanied by a writing sample and a non-refundable $35 application fee. Writers proposing more than one project must submit a separate application and fee for each one. The submission period opens on Monday, May 3, 2021. Deadline is midnight on Monday, July 26, 2021.  The winner will be announced no later than August 13, 2021. Residency must be completed by December 31, 2022.

This fellowship invites young writers, ages 18 to 25, to explore social justice issues including racial discrimination, women’s rights, and/or educational disparity. The work may be in any literary genre: fiction or nonfiction, poetry or prose, or a combination. The successful application will demonstrate insight, honesty, literary merit, and the likelihood of publication.

Two fellowships will be awarded. One will be unrestricted. The other will be awarded to a young writer from the Arkansas Southern Delta region.  Fellowship winners receive a two-week residency to focus completely on their work.  Writers may stay in the Maya Angelou Suite at the Writers’ Colony at Dairy Hollow in Eureka Springs, Arkansas.  Each writer’s suite has a bedroom, private bathroom, separate writing space, and wireless internet. 2021 Emerging Poet Fellowship

Poets assembling their first book of poems are invited to apply for this fellowship. Do you have enough or nearly enough poems for your first book? Do you need time and mental space to write new poems, revise the ones you’ve written, select and arrange them for a book, or all of these? Eligible applicants shall not have published a chapbook or other book of verse but may have published other books. (Published means the book has been issued for public sale and distribution.) Prior publication of individual poems is desirable but not required. The writing sample provided must demonstrate literary merit and the promise of publication in book form.  

The fellowship winner will receive a two-week residency to allow the recipient to focus completely on their work. Each writer’s suite has a bedroom, private bathroom, separate writing space, and wireless internet. 2020 Real People, Real Struggles,

The Writers’ Colony at Dairy Hollow is offering a fellowship to a writer working on a short or long work of non-fiction focusing on how they (the writer or another) have managed, and continue to manage, their mental illness.

This personal story should offer not just insight and awareness, but most importantly, hope. It should share your dreams, and how you are adjusting and fine-tuning them. Stories focused on relationships, family life, travel, employment, civic contributions, passions, along with the barriers, fears, and stigmas faced, are encouraged. For the purposes of this fellowship, the writing should be non-fiction, and can take the form of memoir, personal essay, profile, or biography.

This fellowship entitles the recipient to a two-week stay, with meals provided, at The Writer’s Colony at Dairy Hollow in beautiful, charming Eureka Springs, Arkansas. Writers-in-residence have a private suite with writing space, private bath, and wireless internet.
