PPT Slide Design Trends: What’s Hot and What’s Not

In the world of presentations, PowerPoint slides are essential tools for delivering impactful messages and engaging audiences. However, not all slides are created equal. The design of your PPT slides plays a crucial role in capturing attention, conveying information effectively, and leaving a lasting impression on your viewers. In this article, we will explore the latest trends in PPT slide design and highlight what’s hot and what’s not in the industry.

Minimalism – Less is More

In recent years, minimalism has become a dominant trend in PPT slide design. Gone are the days of cluttered slides with excessive text and busy graphics. Today, simplicity is key. Minimalistic designs focus on clean layouts, ample white space, and concise content to enhance readability and visual impact.

One popular technique is to use large bold headlines combined with minimal text to convey key messages effectively. This allows viewers to grasp the main idea at a glance without feeling overwhelmed by unnecessary details. Additionally, minimalist designs often incorporate striking visuals or simple icons that complement the content rather than distract from it.

Custom Typography – Adding Flair

Typography plays a significant role in PPT slide design as it sets the tone and enhances readability. While default fonts may be convenient, they lack uniqueness and can make your presentation appear generic. That’s where custom typography comes into play.

Custom fonts allow you to inject personality into your slides while maintaining professionalism. Creative typography choices can make your presentation stand out from the crowd and create a memorable visual experience for your audience. However, be cautious not to overdo it – stick to one or two custom fonts throughout your presentation for consistency.

Multimedia Integration – Engaging Visuals

The integration of multimedia elements into PPT slides has become increasingly popular as it helps captivate audiences’ attention and make presentations more engaging. While images have always been a staple in slide design, the use of videos, animations, and interactive elements has taken presentations to a whole new level.

Videos can be used to demonstrate product features, show customer testimonials, or present complex concepts in an easily digestible format. Animations and transitions can add a touch of dynamism and make your slides visually appealing. Interactive elements like clickable buttons or embedded quizzes encourage audience participation and create an immersive experience.

Responsiveness – Mobile-Friendly Presentations

With the growing reliance on mobile devices for accessing information, ensuring that your PPT slides are mobile-friendly has become crucial. A responsive design allows your presentation to adapt seamlessly to different screen sizes without compromising its visual appeal or readability.

To make your PPT slides mobile-friendly, consider using larger fonts and graphics, simplifying complex layouts, and optimizing slide transitions for smaller screens. Additionally, test your presentation on various devices to ensure that it looks and functions flawlessly across different platforms.

In conclusion, staying up-to-date with the latest trends in PPT slide design is essential for creating impactful presentations that resonate with your audience. Embrace minimalism by simplifying your content and utilizing bold headlines. Experiment with custom typography to add flair and uniqueness to your slides. Incorporate multimedia elements like videos and animations to engage viewers’ attention. Finally, optimize your presentation for mobile devices to reach a wider audience effectively. By following these trends and avoiding outdated practices, you can elevate the effectiveness of your PPT slides and deliver exceptional presentations every time.

The Learning Hour* – Week 11 : PowerPoint Slide Elements

Posted by  Ashish Agarwal

powerpoint slide elements

A PowerPoint slide is the fundamental building block of a Presentation. A PowerPoint presentation is simply a collection of different slides arranged in a logical manner to effectively communicate a story.

So then, what are the main components of building a slide?  We look at the 5 most important elements which needs to be there on any slide.

1.  Slide Title

powerpoint slide elements

Always start creating a powerpoint slide with the Slide Title. Think of it as the key message or insight that you would like to present on the slide. Ideally , there should be only 1 main message on each slide. The slide title should be crisp and concise to effectively communicate the key message. It should be written in a powerful way such that the audience understands the message without having to read the main content of the slide. The slide title should present the slide synthesis of the main so what from the content on the slide. Remember, not a summary regurgitating the same facts which are on the slide but helping the audience move from facts to the most important so what from that single slide.

2. Charts/Graphs

powerpoint slide elements

There are a number of data related PowerPoint charts that is in-built to represent numerical information. Use them extensively to illustrate numbers and quantitative information. You can choose from a number of chart options like Line Chart, Pie Chart, Waterfall chart, Bubble Chart, etc. Be careful to use the right chart for the right data. Using the right charts for financial data helps to enhance the visual communication of the powerpoint slide.

3. TEXT

powerpoint slide elements

Gone are the days where you would use a PowerPoint slide to put lots of text on it. No one reads those slides anymore. Instead, use TEXT comments sparingly to only indicate the main point. Choose a big font size of at least 24 to ensure your audience can easily read the slides. If you must use bullets, not more than 3-5 bullets on a slide. You can also use Smart-Arts to represent text based information on the slide. Ensure you follow basic presentation tips that will make the reader engaged with reading the information on your slide.

4. Images/Icons

powerpoint slide elements

Use Images and Icons to reinforce a point and not just to jazz up the powerpoint slide. Images are a great way to capture the attention and effectively communicate with the audience. There are a number of websites that allow you to download high quality images and icons. So, make the most of them. Sometimes you many need a paid subscription to access these images but there are lots of free websites as well that will allow you stock images for free.

5. Footnotes/Source:

powerpoint slide elements

Be sure to add any important footnotes or source on the slide. Footnotes and source complete a slide with any extra information that the audience should be aware of. If there is a source of information that you would want to call out on a slide, footnotes are the best place to put it. They serve to improve the authenticity of the presentation with the right attribution provided.

So as you can see, the above 5 elements are extremely crucial to make a slide in PowerPoint. These 5 elements are part of any slide and if we do each of them well, the overall slide looks compelling and helps us to convey the right piece of information to the audience.

Select individual objects on a slide

Use the Select options in the Editing group at the far right end of the Home tab to see and select individual objects in PowerPoint:

Select in the Editing group

Click the object to select it. If that does not select it, on the Home tab, in the Editing group, click Select and do one of the following:

To select all of the objects and placeholders on the slide, click Select All .

To select objects that are hidden, stacked, or behind text, click Select Objects , and then click and drag over the objects.

To open the Selection pane, where you can select, multi-select, show, hide, or change the order of objects, click Selection Pane , and then click the options that you want.

Selecting a stacked object using the Selection pane

Figure: In this example, we can easily select the oval shape in the Selection pane, whereas on the slide, the oval is buried under the sun and triangle shapes.

After you have selected the object, you can apply PowerPoint commands and features to that object as usual.

Open the Selection Pane any time: On the Home tab, select  Arrange > Selection Pane .

Using the Selection Pane

Once you've inserted shapes, text boxes, SmartArt graphics, images, or other objects, you can open the Selection Pane to keep track of them all.

Select one of the objects you want to manage.

Select the ... Format tab that appears on the ribbon when you select the object, and then choose Selection Pane (or Arrange > Selection Pane ).

Shows the Shape Format tab in PowerPoint 2016 for Mac

The Selection Pane opens with all your objects listed, and you can do any of the following:

Drag an item up or down in the list to change the order . In the example below from PowerPoint, moving the curved connector to the top of the list also brought it forward in front of the two oval shapes (and everything else on the slide).

Shows the connector behind two circles

Group or ungroup objects listed in the Selection Pane . If you select multiple objects by using Command + Click, you can then group them or ungroup them by selecting Group Objects on the ribbon in the Format tab.

Shows the Group icon on the ribbon in PowerPoint 2016 for Mac

The Selection pane lets you view and select individual elements on a slide, show or hide items, or re-order them. Double-click an item in the pane to rename it.

Open the Selection pane

On the Classic ribbon:

On the Home tab, select the Arrange button for a menu of options related to selecting and arrange objects on a slide.

On the Single-Line ribbon:

If the Arrange button isn't visible, select the three-dot ( ... ) More button at the far right end. Then, under More Drawing Options , select Arrange > Selection Pane .

Rearrange items by using the selection pane

Items in the pane are listed in layer order. The top item is on the the top layer.

Drag an item up or down in the list to change the order.

Show or hide items

Use an item's eye symbol on the right side of the pane to determine whether it is shown or hidden on the slide:

In the Selection Pane, use the "eye" symbol on the right of any object to show or hide it.
