It is Bhagat Singh's one of the most famous essays. ‘Why I am an Atheist’ was written in 1930 while he was imprisoned in the Lahore Central Jail. The essay was a reply to Singh’s religious friends who thought he became an atheist because of his vanity and self-admiration.

‘India Divided’ by Rajendra Prasad

Sri Aurobindo’s Love and Death

Written in 1899, Sri Aurobindo’s Love and Death is a narrative poem based on the Mahabharata. The book looks at the concept of freedom first from the lens of a revolutionary leader and poet, and then through the eyes of a mystic. What is the meaning of freedom? This was a question that hounded him for years. The book is thus his way of striking the right balance between individual freedom and the society’s collective interests. To him, love and death were intricately linked to the notion of freedom, which in turn was the most integral aspect of the human spirit.

Anandamath by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, Basanta Koomar Roy (Tr.)

Set during the Bengal famine of 1770, Anandamath played a crucial role in the Indian freedom struggle. The story follows a married couple, Mahendra and Kalyani, who become separated after leaving their famine-affected village. They are found by the sannyasis, a rebel group, whose members are willing to sacrifice their lives in the fight against injustice and oppression. As Mahendra is tempted to join their cause, he is told that he must give up his wife and child and dedicate himself completely to the service of Mother India. The book acted as a wakeup call to many Indians to contribute to the freedom struggle. Even after the book was banned under British Raj, one of the poems from the book, Bande Mataram, became extremely popular among the freedom fighters. The beginning two stanzas of the poem were adopted as India’s National Song after Independence.

Gora by Rabindranath Tagore, Radha Chakravarty (Tr.)

The theme of anti-colonial nationalism is evident in Gora, published in 1909. In Gora, his longest novel, Tagore explains the importance of a national identity which goes beyond caste, creed and religion. The story follows a fair-skinned man, ‘Gora’, an orthodox Hindu who dreams about his ideal Bharatvarsha, a prosperous and happy India. He believes that this can be achieved by uniting everyone under the mantle of Hinduism. Important Historical Literature/Books/Newspapers in the Freedom Struggle/Development of Indian Press

10th Aug 2020

Important Newspapers associated with the freedom Struggle

Important books were written during the Indian freedom struggle

Development of press in india.

  • James Augustus Hickey in 1780 started The Bengal Gazette or Calcutta General Advertiser, the first newspaper in India , which was seized in 1872 because of its outspoken criticism of the Government.
  • Later more newspapers/journals came up—The Bengal Journal, The Calcutta Chronicle, The Madras Courier, The Bombay Herald.
  • The Company’s officers were worried that these newspapers might reach London and expose their misdeeds. Thus they saw the need for curbs on the press.

Early Regulations on press

  • Censorship of Press Act, 1799 : Lord Wellesley enacted this, anticipating the French invasion of India. It imposed almost wartime press restrictions including pre-censorship.
  • Licensing Regulations, 1823 : The acting governor-general, John Adams , who had reactionary views, enacted these. According to these regulations, starting or using a press without a license was a penal offense. Rammohan Roy’s Mirat-ul-Akbar had to stop publication.
  • Press Act of 1835 or Metcalfe Act : Metcalfe (governor-general— 1835-36) repealed the obnoxious 1823 ordinance. The new Press Act (1835) required a printer/publisher to give a precise account of premises of a publication
  • Licensing Act, 1857 : Due to the emergency caused by the 1857 revolt, this Act imposed licensing restrictions.
  • Registration Act, 1867 : This replaced Metcalfe’s Act of 1835 and was of a regulatory, not restrictive, nature. As per the Act, every book/ newspaper was required to print the name of the printer and the publisher and the place of the publication; and a copy was to be submitted to the local government within one month of the publication of a book.

Struggle by Early Nationalists to Secure Press Freedom

  • Right from the early nineteenth century, defense of civil liberties, including the freedom of the press, had been high on the nationalist agenda.
  • As early as 1824, Raja Rammohan Roy had protested against a resolution restricting the freedom of the press.
  • The early phase of the nationalist movement from around 1870 to 1918 focused more on political propaganda and education, formation and propagation of nationalist ideology and arousing, training, mobilization, and consolidation of public opinion, than on mass agitation or active mobilization of masses through open meetings.
  • For this purpose, the press proved a crucial tool in the hands of the nationalists. The Indian National Congress in its early days relied solely on the press to propagate its resolutions and proceedings.
  • Many newspapers emerged during these years under distinguished and fearless journalists.
  • These included The Hindu and Swadesamitran under G. Subramaniya Aiyar, The Bengalee under Surendranath Banerjea, Voice of India under Dadabhai Naoroji, Amrita Bazar Patrika under Sisir Kumar Ghosh and Motilal Ghosh, Indian Mirror under N.N. Sen, Kesari (in Marathi) and Mahratta (in English) under Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Sudharak under Gopal Krishna Gokhale, and Hindustan and Advocate under G.P. Verma. Other main newspapers included Tribune and Akbar-i-am in Punjab, Gujarati, Indu Prakash, Dhyan Prakash and Kal in Bombay and Som Prakash, Banganivasi and Sadharani in Bengal.
  • The national movement, from its very beginning, stood for the freedom of the press.
  • The Indian newspapers became highly critical of Lord Lytton’s administration especially regarding its inhuman treatment of victims of the famine of 1876-77.
  • The Government struck back with the Vernacular Press Act, 1878.

The Vernacular Press Act

  • Objective: Designed to better control’ the vernacular press and effectively punish and repress seditious writing.
  • The district magistrate was empowered to call upon the printer and publisher of any vernacular newspaper to enter into a bond with the government undertaking not to cause disaffection against the government or antipathy between persons of different religions, caste, race through published material.
  • The printer and publisher could also be required to deposit security which could be forfeited if the regulation were contravened, and press equipment could be seized if the offense re-occurred.
  • The magistrate’s action was final and no appeal could be made in a court of law.
  • A vernacular newspaper could get an exemption from the operation of the Act by submitting proofs to a government censor.
  • The Act came to be nicknamed ‘the gagging Act”. The worst features of this Act were—(i) discrimination between English and vernacular press, (ii) no right of appeal
  • In 1883, Surendranath Banerjea became the first Indian journalist to be imprisoned.

Newspaper (Incitement to Offences) Act, 1908

  • Aimed against Extremist nationalist activity, the Act empowered the magistrates to confiscate press property that published objectionable material likely to cause incitement to murder/ acts of violence.

Indian Press Act, 1910

  • This Act revived the worst features of the Vernacular Press Act – local government was empowered to demand security at registration from the printer/publisher and forfeit/deregister if it was an offending newspaper, and the printer of a newspaper was required to submit two copies of each issue to local government free of charge.

The British Empire's rule over India lasted for about 200 years. During this period, the demand for Swaraj was seen gaining momentum in many corners of British India. The British had enslaved India not only economically but also socially and culturally. From time to time the demand for independence started rising in many areas of India. After which the freedom struggle had started gaining momentum, famous writers have also contributed a lot to these struggles of freedom.

Whenever a society starts becoming pathless, confused and corrupt in politics, at that time the writer uses his writing skills to provide a new path to that society. In the 19th century, when the voices of independence started rising in India, some famous leaders and writers like Rabindranath Tagore, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Buckingham Chandra Chatterjee, Mahatma Gandhi and Subhash Chandra Bose gave it the right direction through their works. On January 26, India will be celebrating its 72nd Republic Day. The day is observed every year to remember the date on which the Constitution of India came into effect, 26 January 1950. The constitution replaced the Government of India Act (1935) as the governing document of India and thus, turning the nation into a republic.

India was ruled by the British for almost 200 years. It started with Robert Clive winning the Battle of Plassey in 1757 and ended with India getting independence in 1947. The long struggle to achieve this involved the blood, sweat and tears of innumerable freedom fighters. Thousands of them sacrificed their lives so that India could be freed of the British rule while many got the chance to see the country as an independent nation. Here is a look at 8 memorable books by freedom fighters.

Train To Pakistan

Khushwant singh.

Set around the time of India’s Partition, Train To Pakistan is one of Khushwant Singh’s most acclaimed works. It is set in a peaceful and remote village that got involved in one of the worst riots in the history of the nation. Mano Majra is a Sikh-Muslim village where both communities have lived in harmony for centuries. Everything changes when, one day, a ‘ghost train’ arrives from Pakistan, full of dead bodies of Hindus, and plunges the village into religious hate. Train To Pakistan recounts the terror of Partition and gives a closer look into the lives of people affected by it.

India @ 70: 5 books that capture India’s freedom struggle, independence and partition

books and authors during indian freedom struggle

Independence Day 2017: Here are 5 books about India and its history you should read, even if you’re not a book lover.

Books have a way of capturing the past in a way history textbooks can’t quite. Over the past seven decades, many writers, historians, political leaders and academicians have written about the colonisation of India, its efforts to gain independence, and finally, the aftermath of getting independence. Here are our top 5 picks:

India After Gandhi and The Last Mughal both offer insight into India’s history in different ways.

1) The Discovery of India by Jawaharlal Nehru

From 1942 to 1946, Jawaharlal Nehru was imprisoned at the Admednagar Fort in Maharashtra, to keep him away from political limelight. Like many thinkers, he too took to the pen while in jail and wrote The Discovery of India. It’s a mix of Nehru’s observations, India’s rich and much praised cultural history, historical facts, and more. Read this regardless of your political leanings.

2) Freedom at Midnight by Larry Collins and Dominique Lapierre

American writer Larry Collins and French writer Dominique Lapierre wrote many successful historical books together. In Freedom at Midnight, they chronicle events in the last year of the British rule. It sheds light on how callously the boundary separating India and Pakistan was drawn, the responses by princely states, and the mass migration and genocide that followed the independence.

Remnants of a Separation is a crossover between history and anthropology.

3) Remnants of a Separation by Aanchal Malhotra

Artist and oral historian Aanchal Malhotra was born into a family affected by the partition. Her recently launched debut book is a crossover between history and anthropology. It tells stories from both sides of the border through stories and the objects carried across borders by migrants. Malhotra’s interest in the subject was sparked after she discovered items like a maang-tikka, a pocket knife, and a set of kitchen utensils which her ancestors carried with them during the Partition.

4) India After Gandhi by Ramachandra Guha

One of India’s most known historians, Ramachandra Guha perfects captures free India and the various protests and conflicts since. He also provides an insight into the lives and careers of powerful political leaders like Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi. A well-researched book, India After Gandhi won the Sahitya Akademi Award for English in 2011. It’s a must-read to understand a complex country like India.

5) The Last Mughal by William Dalrymple

Dalrymple, who has lived in India for several years, looks at the sepoy mutiny of 1857 like no one else. The book chronicles the fall of the Mughal Empire, as the British slowly took over the India. The book examines the events leading up the mutiny and its aftermath through the life of Bahadur Shah Zafar, the last emperor.
