Dissertation Binding and Printing | Options, Tips, & Comparison

Published on September 9, 2022 by Raimo Streefkerk . Revised on July 18, 2023.

Congratulations, you’ve finally finished your dissertation . It’s been professionally proofread and checked by a solid plagiarism checker .

The final step is printing your dissertation, which means choosing between:

  • Types of binding
  • Color vs. black & white

Single vs. double-sided

  • Paper thickness

There are a few printing and binding services to choose from as well. This article presents a few options that can help you make the right decisions.

Printing service options

Binding keeps the pages of your dissertation together, and comes in a variety of price points. Spiral binding is cheaper, a hardcover book binding is much pricier.

The type of binding you choose can depend on:

  • Guidelines from your university or department
  • The version (draft vs. final)
  • The type of work you’re submitting ( PhD vs. master’s thesis vs. undergraduate thesis )

Spiral binding (± $7)

Spiral bound

  • Professional appearance
  • Opens flat, so browsing through the pages is easy
  • Fairly inexpensive

Comb binding (± $5)

Comb bound

  • Pages are easy to browse
  • Binding can be opened and closed
  • Can be cheap-looking

Fastback binding (± $8)

fastback bound

  • Professional, book-like appearance
  • Available in different colors
  • Individual sheets can come loose with time

Paperback binding ($10–20)

paperback bound

This type of binding makes your dissertation more durable and professional. In most cases, it’s possible to add front and spine lettering.

  • Durable and professional
  • Book-like appearance
  • Opening and browsing is less smooth than with spiral or comb binding

Hardback binding ($20–50)

hardback bound

  • Customizable cover
  • Quality comes at a price

Color vs. Black & White

Check your university’s guidelines to see if there is guidance about whether to print your dissertation in color or black & white. Note that printing in color is on average two to four times more expensive.

In general, a color-printed dissertation looks more professional, but it is often not required.

Printing double-sided is often cheaper than printing single-sided, due to the paper savings — it makes your dissertation half as thick. However, some universities require you to print your dissertation single-sided. Be sure to check the guidelines.

When printing your dissertation double-sided, pay attention to the following points:

  • New chapters should start on the front side of the paper. You will need to take this into account and insert “blank pages” when preparing to print.
  • Add a blank page after the title page so that the acknowledgments and abstract are not printed on the back of your title page.
  • The page numbering is often placed in the bottom right on the right side of the page and bottom left on the left side. You can easily set this in Word by choosing “outside alignment”.
  • Check your style guide to make sure there aren’t any rules for printing.

Paper weight

The thickness of the paper (measured in gsm or grams) is something most students don’t think about, but it does have a significant impact on the look and feel of your printed thesis or dissertation.

Standard printing paper has a weight of 75–90 gsm. For a bachelor’s or master’s dissertation, this is likely fine. If you want the paper to look and feel more professional and durable, a paper weight of 100–130 gsm is better. This is often used for PhD dissertations.

Number of copies

It is common to print three to five copies of your dissertation. Depending on your university’s guidelines, you might need to submit one to three copies to your supervisor and department. In addition, you might want to have a copy for yourself or your family.

The production time for printing and binding takes on average two days, and delivery takes at least another day. For an additional charge (ranging from +20 to +80%), the production and delivery time can be shortened.

Have a looming deadline? Your local print shop is likely able to print and bind your dissertation faster, and it eliminates delivery time. However, keep in mind that this is often a little more expensive.

Before sending your dissertation to a print shop, there are three things you should do:

  • Save your file as a PDF By saving your file as a PDF, the formatting will be consistent on every computer. This way you prevent any unpleasant surprises, such as offset pages, when receiving your printed product.
  • Check for language mistakes There’s nothing worse than finding a language mistake in your printed version. Make sure to proofread your dissertation or make use of a professional proofreading service .
  • Update the contents page Before saving your dissertation as a PDF, don’t forget to update the table of contents and cross-check the page numbers listed there with the actual page numbers.

The table below provides an overview of two popular dissertation printing and binding shops, including information on delivery costs and review score.

*Prices are based on a spiral-bound dissertation of 40 pages , printed single-sided , in black , on 80-90gsm  paper, including a clear outer front and back cover .

**Prices are based on a hardback-bound dissertation of 200 pages , printed single-sided , in black , on 90-100gsm  paper.

Colour vs. Black & White

Unless specifically stated in your university guidelines, it is up to you to decide whether to print your dissertation in colour or black & white. Printing in colour is on average two to four times more expensive.

In general, a colour-printed dissertation looks more professional, but it is not required. Does your dissertation contain graphs or figures that rely on colour? Be sure to print at least these pages in colour.

Printing double sided is often cheaper than printing single sided due to the paper savings – it makes your dissertation half as thick. However, some universities require you to print your dissertation single sided. Be sure to check the guidelines.

When printing your dissertation double sided, pay attention to the following points:

High Quality is Essential

The more brilliantly and true the reproduction of the colors, the better the quality of the content of your bachelor’s thesis. And in turn, this has a positive influence on the examiner! It is not only the appearance, but also the feel of the paper for thesis printing that plays such a crucial role in getting a good grade. You know the feeling of holding strong, smooth paper in your hands? High value is expressed not only for contracts and important documents, but also in the paper for thesis printing and binding.

What paper should I print my thesis on?

There are different types and qualities of papers used for printing work, depending on what needs to be printed. Some examples of these paper types are the 80 g/m², 100 g/m² and 120 g/m² papers. At BachelorPrint, we use the 100 g/m² premium paper as our standard for printing. This is because it is of very high quality, robust, and feels nice between the fingers when flipping through pages. Regardless of which type of paper you choose, the print time and cost efficiency of your thesis won’t be changed.

What is the difference between 100g/m² and 120g/m² paper?

The 100g/m² and 120g/m² papers are both used in the printing of high-quality academic writing projects. While they are both of very high quality, the 120g/m² paper is thicker and better for double-sided printing than the 100gm/² paper. As such, the 120g/m² paper is preferred for theses, dissertations and final papers as it is robust and won’t be bent so easily. However, the 100g/m² premium paper is used as a standard and comes at no extra printing and binding cost , unlike in copy shops.

Should my thesis be printed double sided?

When printing a thesis, it is important to produce something of very high quality. Often, it is recommended to print theses double-sided due to the volume of pages they have. However, it is also very important to use the 120g/m² paper for theses in order to avoid seeing through the pages to the other side of the paper. Paired with an elegant leather binding and robust paper for printing, your thesis will be of the highest quality.

What are the types of binding for thesis paper?

There are many different types of binding and which one you choose depends on the importance of the academic writing work you are printing a binding. A bachelor’s thesis or master’s thesis is very important, therefore we always recommend these to be bound using leather binding. However, if you want to hand in your thesis with an application or need it for storage purposes only, other types of binding such as thermal binding or spiral binding would be sufficient.

How much does it cost to print thesis?

Several factors influence the cost of printing and binding a thesis. These factors include but are not limited to:

  • How many copies are required
  • Which types of binding you choose
  • How many pages the thesis has

To save money, you can pick and choose different bindings for each copy of your thesis.

100 g/m² Color Copy Premium Paper

Paper-for-thesis-printing-and-binding-568x312

“The 100 g/m² Color Copy premium paper for thesis printing […] was specially developed to produce a particular brilliance and value.”

There are very cheap paper grades, the airy and rough quality of which can be seen with the naked eye. Touching the paper for the first time usually confirms this first impression. It just feels cheap, and it is even less fun to hold the paper in your hands longer, let alone deal with the written content. These are normally low-cost papers with a paper thickness of 80g/m².

It’s hardly surprising that the currently advertised printing prices are the lowest we’ve ever seen. But you get what you pay for, and this reflects the quality of the paper for thesis printing.

There are, however, paper types that exhibit a high quality thanks to their greater paper thickness and smooth surface. These papers include, for example, 100g/m² Color Copy premium paper  for thesis printing. This paper has been specially developed to produce a particular brilliance and value. These factors play a special role, in particular in theses.

BachelorPrint   has specifically addressed the requirements of students and graduates and thus only uses 100g/m² Color Copy paper for thesis printing. Together with leather binding, particularly with a premium suede cover, your bachelor’s thesis, master’s thesis, or doctoral thesis will stand head and shoulders above the rest!

Ireland

Top Quality Thesis Printing

Using the highest quality paper for thesis printing is worthless if the printer’s performance is limited or inferior. Only with powerful brand printers, such as those produced by multi award winning manufacturer Xerox, is the highest print quality achieved, which you can’t only see, but also feel! To make sure that graduates are convinced of the paper quality before printing, they can, of course, come in and feel the 100g/m² Color Copy premium paper  in their hands.

“Only with high performance brand printers […] can the highest print quality be achieved”

Only when you, the customer, are 100% convinced of the paper for thesis printing, the print quality and our service, have we done our job. And we’re looking forward to it!

After the printing of your bachelor’s thesis, Mmster’s thesis or dissertation, the right binding should also be chosen. We’ll give you the support you need to prepare your academic work through the experience and know-how we’ve acquired over many years. Just ask us. We wish you luck!

At BachelorPrint , the 100g/m² paper is the standard paper used for thesis printing.  However, if you have a bachelor’s thesis, master’s thesis, PhD thesis or dissertation with a very high page count, we recommend you use the 120g/m² premium paper for thesis printing and have the paper printed on both sides. In doing so, you will save space and the page limit for leather binding is then not exceeded. Thanks to the thickness of the paper for thesis printing, you can’t see the text on the other side.

How to Outline Expenses/Budget in Your Dissertation Plan

How to Outline Expenses/Budget in Your Dissertation Plan

4-minute read

  • 9th May 2023

When drafting your dissertation outline plan , there’s a lot to consider. One crucial section not to overlook is your budget and expenses. A comprehensive budget shows that you have thought through your study thoroughly and are prepared to execute your research plan successfully. Here, we’ll go through the steps you’ll need to take to craft a budget, including a few examples of common budget structures.

Steps to Take to Create Your Budget

1. consult your adviser, committee members, and funding sources for guidelines.

The source or sources responsible for funding your dissertation research will likely have guidelines on what is and isn’t a billable expense. Before defining your projected costs, check your funding organization’s specifications on allowable expenses. It can also help to speak with your adviser and potentially other dissertation committee members about the specifics and general guidelines to ensure everyone’s on the same page when it comes to your anticipated costs.

2. List All of the Costs Associated With Implementing Your Desired Dissertation Plan

Depending on your type of research, setting, and particular project, a wide range of items might be appropriate to add to your budget. Go through your dissertation project plan from beginning to end and list all of the required tasks, along with who will complete them, to ensure you don’t miss any expenses. Although the list below is not comprehensive, and your items might vary depending on your research project, some standard costs to consider are:

●  Salaries and wages for all personnel involved in the project (including time and other resources that will be expected from your adviser and committee members).

●  Equipment and lab fees.

●  Recruitment costs for study participants.

●  Participant compensation.

●  Software costs for data collection, storage, and analysis.

●  Office supplies (including any printing of recruitment materials, study information pamphlets, or conference posters).

●  Travel (including transport to and from field sites, conference registration fees, transportation, lodging, and meals).

●  Journal or conference submission and publication fees for papers created from your dissertation research.

●  Costs involved with writing, editing, and proofreading services for your dissertation .

Additionally, while it’s advisable to work within the constructs of your funding sources, don’t sell your research study short. After writing down all of the essential costs needed to complete your research plan, ask yourself how you would use any further financial backing. Could you make a good argument as to why supplementary funding would add significant value to your work? If so, consider adding these line items to your budget as well. If you have to negotiate your budget, you can always circle back and reconsider these extra items.

3. Construct Your Budget

The institution overseeing your dissertation project might require your budget to be submitted in a specified structure or template. However, if this isn’t the case, there are several possible approaches to organizing and presenting it – just make sure to check with your institution for any specific guidelines or requirements.

A standard request is to list your expenses by grouping them into direct costs , such as equipment, travel, and wages for people working on the project, and indirect costs , which are expenses that aren’t solely associated with your research project, such as general administration, utilities, and the use of shared services or spaces like libraries. It’s also common to arrange your direct and indirect costs into a Line-Item Budget (LIB) , which simply means that you list each of your projected expenses as a line in your budget.

There are many types of budget templates available for free online. Some designs will include a column to provide more details about each item, while other approaches will list the justifications for the expenses at the end. If you have multiple funding sources, it may be helpful to have columns for each funder and the percentage or amount of each expense they will be expected to be responsible for. Some templates will calculate the total costs for you , but no matter which presentation method you choose, make sure your costs are entered and totaled correctly.

Although the individual items will vary from project to project, these three steps will lead you on your way to preparing a persuasive proposal budget:

●  Consult your adviser, committee members, and funding sources for guidelines.

●  List all the costs associated with implementing your desired dissertation plan (including the items you hope to get funded if they are justifiable).

●  Construct your budget with direct and indirect costs with justifications for each using an appropriate template and confirm your expenses are calculated correctly.

Publication and Dissertation Costs

Publication and Dissertation

What are considered publication and dissertation projects costs?

Expenses of publication, performance, or exhibition of scholarly or creative work as well as costs associated with the final preparation and defense of the dissertation.

What do these costs include?

For those completing degrees required by the college (usually the Ph.D.), allowable expenses include those associated directly with the final preparation of the dissertation, such as photocopying and or binding. A single round-trip for the purpose of the final dissertation defense will also be covered. Please note that tuition for the final semester of graduate school is not covered. For the publication of other manuscripts, allowable expenses include those associated with preparing for publication, such as photocopying, graphics preparation, indexing, page charges, and translation where appropriate.  Please check to see whether your publisher offers a discount on page charges for authors at 4-year colleges. Multi-authored publications are supported proportionately to the number of co-authors for the publication. For publications where authors are from more than one institution, publication costs are expected to be shared equally. Sometimes publishers require a subvention subsidy from the author. R&D will consider funding these when reasonable and requested by reputable publishing houses. Data entry, keyboarding, and proof-reading are not ordinarily supported.  Any income e.g. royalties, external funding, received over the amount of actual expenses incurred will be reimbursed to the College up to the amount funded by R&D.

For creative and performing artists, the modes and costs of "publication" are often very different. R&D exercises flexibility in these cases to allow expenses for exhibition and performance.

How are these projects supported?

For Ph.D. dissertations, expenses are limited to $1,000. For other manuscripts and projects, the limit is $2,000.

Helpful Tips about Negotiating a Contract:

The library has compiled resources for negotiating author rights on this guide (the section on Maintain Your Author Rights):   https://libguides.dickinson.edu/copyright/openaccess

Once a contract is signed negotiations are not an option available to you.

Special note on open access publications:

The Waidner-Spahr Library and the Research & Development Committee partner to support open access (OA) publication.  Readers and institutions are not charged for access to OA publications.  This means the College library does not have to spend additional money to purchase your publication back from the publisher.  Some (but not all) publishers require author fees to subsidize OA publication. To request funding, faculty members should apply to the Research & Development Committee. The following criteria apply to OA funding requests:

  •   All research articles in the journal or the entire monograph must be OA, not just the publication being funded.
  •   The publication must be made immediately OA (with no embargo or delay).
  • The publisher must be reputable. If in doubt, please consult with a librarian.

·          The R&D funding limit for a single publication is $2,000.  Some publishers are open to negotiation of reduced OA charges.

·          Publications funded must be deposited in the "Dickinson Scholar" https://dickinson.hykucommons.org/   institutional repository managed by the library.  Dickinson Scholar provides additional access to the work and secure digital archiving.

Alternative OA funding models:

  • Many reputable OA journals do not charge authors. The Directory of Open Access Journals https://doaj.org/ is a service that lists high quality, peer reviewed OA research journals in multiple disciplines and languages.
  • Some agencies allow use of grant funds to cover OA publication charges (e.g., NIH, NSF), and faculty are encouraged to explore availability of this funding.
  • The library is a supporting member of the Open Library for Humanities https://www.openlibhums.org/ which does not charge author fees.
  • Non-OA publishers will often allow authors to make some version of their work available online at no cost, usually after an embargo period of 6 months to 2 years. Embargo periods can often be negotiated with the publisher, even for monographs.

·          A citation for your work can be included immediately in Dickinson Scholar https://dickinson.hykucommons.org/ , with the full-text made visible online automatically when allowed by your publishing agreement.

·          More information about OA publishing is available from the library at: http://libguides.dickinson.edu/copyright/openaccess .

Acknowledgments:

The Dickinson College Research & Development Committee must be acknowledged in writing in all publications or performances resulting from the funded activity. (See General Regulation ).

Special application instructions for just this program:

  • Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, but please submit all expenses for a single project at the same time.
  • Documentation from the publisher detailing the expenses is expected.
  • Please note that funds are not unlimited in this category, and you must apply in advance.
  • If awarded, a narrative report is not required.

An all-American Bible — with a cut of the sales going to Trump

Donald trump finds votes and profits at the intersection of politics and religion.

how much does it cost to print a dissertation

Donald Trump is not a particularly religious person, if he is one at all. Even Americans who view him favorably are a lot more likely to say he’s “not religious” than “very religious.” He goes to churches for political rallies far more often than he goes for services. He says the Bible is his favorite book, though he generally qualifies that by noting that he’s also a big fan of “The Art of the Deal.”

Makes sense that he’d like his own book, given how much money he’s made off it over the years. On Tuesday, though, he announced a promotion that might endear him even further to the central Christian text: a “God Bless the USA” Bible, some of the proceeds of which will flow back to him.

Sign up for the How to Read This Chart newsletter

Trump announced the book on his social media platform, Truth Social — itself a particularly lucrative venture at the moment, given that its just-listed stock price has jumped nearly 50 percent .

“Happy Holy Week!” Trump’s post said. “Let’s Make America Pray Again. As we lead into Good Friday and Easter, I encourage you to get a copy of the God Bless The USA Bible.” He tagged musician Lee Greenwood in the post because the “God Bless the USA” singer is also touted as an endorser on the product’s webpage .

The promoted Bible has not only the standard books, but also a few additions including the Constitution (“which I’m fighting for every single day very hard,” Trump says in a video attached to the post), the Pledge of Allegiance and, as the webpage touts, the “[h]andwritten chorus to ‘God Bless The USA’ by Lee Greenwood.” It was originally slated for release in 2021, but an outcry from a number of prominent Christians derailed the rollout.

That was then. The current website for the book includes an FAQ that addresses the question of how the former president benefits from the partnership. It assures visitors that no money from the sale of the Bibles will go to Trump’s political campaign. Instead, “ GodBlessTheUSABible.com uses Donald J. Trump’s name, likeness and image under paid license from CIC Ventures LLC, which license may be terminated or revoked according to its terms.”

CIC Ventures, though, is a conduit to Trump — personally, if not politically. In his financial disclosure released last year, he’s identified as the company’s “manager, president, secretary and treasurer” and the Donald J. Trump Revocable Trust is identified as a 100 percent owner of the business. The same entity also receives royalties from his book “A MAGA Journey” and speaking engagements. A person familiar with the agreement confirmed to the New York Times that Trump earns royalties from purchases.

In retrospect, we might have predicted this particular business venture.

First, Trump has increasingly branched out on his endorsement gigs, slapping his name or likeness on sneakers and NFTs in addition to campaign merchandise. He is in a cash crunch — personally and politically — and has been unafraid throughout his career to put the Trump name on anything that might yield a stream of revenue.

But, second, Trump has mined right-wing religiosity consistently for political support and political contributions. Why not branch out into private-sector benefits?

“That’s why our country is going haywire: We’ve lost religion in our country,” Trump says in the video hyping his new partnership. “All Americans need a Bible in their home and I have many. It’s my favorite book.” At another point, he insists that Christians are “under siege” and that “we have to protect anything that is pro-God.”

This is familiar rhetoric. In each of his presidential campaigns , he’s presented similar warnings and promises: Christianity is under threat, and he will be its relentless defender. He’s been effective at building fervent support among White evangelical Protestants, thanks to his insistent efforts to deliver on their political desires. He has been as effective at leveraging the insecurities of evangelical Christians as he has of White conservatives overall.

That this was perhaps predictable doesn’t make it less cynical. The pairing of foundational documents like the Constitution with the Bible has appeal to the conservative Christians Trump embraces but would unquestionably be viewed skeptically by the Constitution’s writers. And, again, even his supporters understand that he’s not really religious. If religion is as essential to America as he claims, why doesn’t that apply to him and his family? (In 2015, his putative church released a statement noting that he wasn’t an “active member.”)

More to the point, why is he plugging this Bible now? The answers are obvious: now because he needs money and this Bible because he benefits financially to some extent.

Perhaps you think I am also being cynical. After all, Trump offers that he’s pitching the book now because Easter is Sunday. Perhaps he simply wants Americans to have a Bible in-hand on the most sacred of Christian holidays.

We turn again to that FAQ.

“The God Bless The USA Bible is printed in limited-edition quantities,” it reads. “Most orders ship within 4-6 weeks of the time ordered. Your order will ship as it becomes available, and we will make reasonable efforts to ship your order as quickly as possible.”

You pay the cost of the Bible, shipping and taxes up front, of course. First things first.
