Capstone courses function as a bridge between the end of school and the beginning of a career, allowing nursing students to put what they’ve learned into practice. As the name suggests, students complete capstones toward the end of their nursing training. Not every nursing program requires a capstone, but those that do generally culminate in a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) or doctor of nursing practice (DNP) degree.

Each nursing program sets their own requirements. While capstone formats differ between programs, they typically consist of an evidence-based practice formal paper or presentation. Students might complete their capstone projects as team leaders, and BSN candidates may present their papers to a faculty panel. Projects could include case studies, program evaluations, and policy analyses.

The focus on evidence-based practice allows students to apply research and experiential evidence toward solving a healthcare problem. For example, candidates may develop intervention strategies that promote health, improve outcomes, enhance quality of life, and foster safe practices for patients.

Capstone goals center on the application of knowledge gained during nursing training programs, including topics related to leadership , management, research, theories, and evidence-based practice, along with the strategies needed to transition from students to baccalaureate-level nurses.

Choosing Your Nursing Capstone Topic

When selecting a capstone topic, students should evaluate their interests, strengths, and weaknesses, along with their chosen nursing specialty area. Luther College recommends that students with lower GPAs and weaker nursing skills consider a basic medical-surgical topic. Those with strong clinical skills and high GPAs might choose emergency or intensive care medicine, although some students might prefer outpatient topics, such as clinical services, long-term care, or public health. However, this is simply an example of one school’s approach, and readers should keep in mind that each school sets its own policies and recommendations.

Asking for guidance from faculty, supervisors, preceptors, and fellow students also helps narrow down capstone topics. Advisors can also provide assistance in choosing an appropriate capstone site, helping with questions of geographical location, facility size, patient population, and care delivery model.

Students develop and learn the skills needed to complete their capstones throughout their training. These include organization and time management, knowledge of evidence-based practice, writing, and critical thinking. They also learn to conduct literature searches, identify research designs, and evaluate evidence.

Completing Your Nursing Capstone

Capstone formats and completion times widely vary between programs. Students at Luther College and Purdue University Northwest complete their capstones in 4-5 weeks, while Ferris State University specifies a timeframe of 30 hours of online classes and 90 hours of applied project work. Case Western Reserve University’s capstone spans 10 weeks.

Regardless of the program, most students follow a PICO format for project proposal questions of inquiry: population, intervention, comparison or condition, and outcome.

Some universities allow capstone projects to be completed in teams, in which students develop and implement the project. Capstone components may include defining the project and the team leader’s role, selecting team members, and formulating the project plan.

In addition to the skills previously referenced, such as knowledge of evidence-based care, critical thinking, and effective writing, capstone courses hone leadership and management abilities These include mastering therapeutic communication, applying leadership and management concepts, and developing collaborative relationships and working on multidisciplinary teams.

Presenting Your Nursing Capstone

The capstone process culminates in a paper or presentation that measures students’ skills in communication, information dissemination, and application of evidence-based practice skills. Members of the public may attend.

Utilizing the poster format, students commonly use three panels to illustrate: (1) the background, problem, and purpose; (2) methodology; and (3) 2-3 key findings and implications. Students who present using PowerPoint on a laptop or other device should pay attention to time limits, planning for one slide per minute, and verify that equipment and internet connectivity are available.

Visuals like graphs, figures, and bullet points are more effective than large blocks of text . Students should practice presenting in front of others to ensure that they thoroughly know their content and can answer questions. Backing up a copy of a PowerPoint presentation and printing out copies or transparencies guards against last-minute glitches.

How is a Nursing Capstone Graded?

Capstone grading methods differ between programs, with some issuing letter grades and others using a pass/no pass system. Grades typically hinge on a percentage basis of the project’s written sections, the final proposal, and the presentation. Faculty evaluate how students execute the capstone course objectives, which may include the following:

Students’ presentation skill evaluation criteria include exhibiting thorough preparation and knowledge of the subject matter, clear and concise communication, adherence to any time limits, ability to answer questions and cite references, and persuasiveness.

What is the Difference Between a Nursing Capstone and a Thesis?

Students complete capstones individually or in groups, while thesis projects must be done alone. Capstone project time lengths span between four and 12 weeks, while graduate students work on their thesis projects throughout their 2- to 3-year programs. Graduate thesis courses generally take place over 1-2 semesters to keep students on track.

Finally, capstone topics evaluate current issues and theories; thesis students incorporate existing case studies and literature while exploring and arguing for their own original research. Some schools require students to publish their thesis papers in a healthcare journal.

Capstone Project Ideas in Nursing: Exploring Innovative Approaches to Healthcare

Introduction to nursing capstone projects.

The dynamic landscape of healthcare requires nursing students to demonstrate practical knowledge through capstone projects. These projects provide an opportunity to delve into a unique aspect of nursing and contribute towards improving the healthcare system. Selecting the perfect topic for your nursing capstone project ideas can be challenging, but we’re here to help! This comprehensive guide will introduce Nursing Capstone Projects Ideas, how to choose them, and several promising themes to explore.

What is a Nursing Capstone Project?

A nursing capstone project is the pinnacle of your academic journey, marking the transition from student to full-fledged healthcare professional. This project provides a platform for students to apply classroom learning to a real-world clinical scenario, driving them to expand their knowledge and refine their nursing skills.

The capstone project isn’t just about showcasing what you’ve learned—it’s about contributing to the nursing field by exploring and addressing a critical healthcare issue. Capstone projects vary in nature. They can take the form of evidence-based practice (EBP) projects where students identify a problem in healthcare, review the current literature on the topic, and propose a solution based on their findings. Alternatively, they may involve research studies where students design and carry out a study to contribute to nursing knowledge.

Furthermore, nursing capstone ideas for different projects offer an opportunity to specialize in a specific area of interest within the vast nursing field. Be it pediatrics, geriatrics, emergency nursing, or community health, this project enables you to delve deeper into a chosen niche, strengthening your expertise.

Nursing capstone papers are hands-on learning experiences that significantly augment your understanding of nursing theories, models, and frameworks. They push you to develop critical thinking, problem-solving, leadership, and research skills, making you adept at evidence-based practice.

How To Write Nursing Capstone Projects Ideas

Indeed, writing a nursing capstone project requires significant planning, research, and execution. This is not a task that can be completed overnight—it’s a process that will test your analytical and problem-solving skills. Here are the steps to use when writing Ideas for a nursing capstone project:

Step 1: Identify the Problem

The first step in any nursing capstone project is identifying a real-world issue relevant to the nursing field. It could be a gap in patient care, an operational inefficiency, or even an unexplored area of nursing practice. To identify a problem worth exploring, you can reflect on your clinical rotations, speak to professionals in the field, or review recent nursing literature.

Step 2: Select a Topic

Once you have identified the problem, the next step is to narrow it down into a specific topic for your capstone project. This specific area of interest should align with your career goals. Remember, the more passionate you are about the topic, the more motivated you will be throughout the process.

Step 3: Develop a Proposal

After selecting a topic, the next step is to develop a project proposal. This proposal should outline the problem you have identified, the objectives of your project, the methods you plan to use to address the problem, and the expected outcomes. Your proposal will require approval from your faculty advisor before you can move forward.

Step 4: Conduct Extensive Research

Now comes the part where you roll your sleeves and dive deep into nursing research. This involves thoroughly reviewing relevant literature, data collection, and analysis. You’ll need to gather and evaluate evidence to support your proposed solution. Please keep track of all your sources; you’ll need to reference them in your final report.

Step 5: Implement the Project

Depending on the nature of your project, you may need to implement your proposed solution in a real-world setting. This could involve initiating a new nursing intervention, developing a program, or testing a new approach to patient care.

Step 6: Write the Final Report

After collecting and analyzing your data, it’s time to write your final report . This report should include an introduction presenting the problem and research objectives, a literature review, a detailed description of your methodology, findings, discussion, and conclusion. Be sure to adhere to your institution’s formatting guidelines.

Step 7: Presentation

Often, nursing capstone projects also require an oral presentation upon completion. This is your chance to share your work with your peers, faculty, and sometimes even professionals in the field. Ensure to rehearse thoroughly, know your content, and be ready to answer questions.

How To Choose Topic For Capstone Project?

Choosing the right topic ideas for your nursing capstone project is critical to your capstone journey. A well-chosen topic can engage the process and yield more impactful results. Here are some key considerations to help guide you in making this significant decision:

Identify Your Interests and Strengths

Start by reflecting on your nursing education and clinical experience so far. Are there specific areas or specialties that you find particularly engaging? Are you passionate about pediatrics, geriatrics, mental health, surgical nursing, or public health? Your capstone project is an excellent opportunity to further explore and specialize in an area you are passionate about. Moreover, working on a topic you love can make the rigorous capstone process more enjoyable and less overwhelming.

Consider the Practical Implications

While personal interest is essential, it’s also crucial to consider the practical implications of your potential topic. Ideally, your capstone project should address a real-world problem in nursing or healthcare and contribute towards improving patient care. Ask yourself, “How will this project potentially impact the nursing field? Will it contribute to better patient outcomes or advance nursing practice?”

Feasibility is Key

Feasibility is another essential consideration when choosing a capstone topic. Given your time frame, resources, and available data, you want to ensure that your selected topic can be thoroughly explored. Ambitious projects are admirable, but remember that it’s better to thoroughly explore a narrower topic than to scratch the surface of a broader one barely.

Seek Feedback

Once you have a potential topic, seek feedback from your instructors, peers, and mentors. They can provide valuable insights, help refine your ideas, and guide you toward a viable and impactful project.

Be Flexible

Finally, remember to stay flexible. As you delve deeper into your topic, you might need to adjust your research question or tweak your project’s focus. That’s perfectly okay and part of the learning process.

In this complete guide, we’ll cover everything you need to know about developing standout capstone nursing projects, from understanding what they are to generating creative topic ideas across nursing specializations. Let’s get started!

What is the Nursing Capstone Project?

A nursing capstone project is a final-year assignment that allows students to demonstrate competency in clinical practice. It requires conducting independent research on a healthcare-related issue to propose an evidence-based solution.

Capstone project writing takes various forms, including research proposals, quality improvement initiatives, community health promotion programs, education plans, or systematic literature reviews. The central aim is to address a problem that is meaningful to current nursing practice.

Capstones assess the capacity to synthesize classroom and clinical learning into recommendations that enhance patient outcomes. They also evaluate skills in critical inquiry, using quality evidence, and effectively presenting key learnings.

Why Capstone Projects Are Important for Nursing Students

Undertaking an independent capstone lays solid foundations for professional and academic growth in four key ways:

Develops Crucial Research Abilities

From performing literature reviews to data analysis, capstones build vital skills for continuous learning throughout a nursing career. Evaluating research and distinguishing high-quality evidence is central to nursing practice.

Cultivates Problem-Solving Skills

Determining creative solutions to complex patient issues is central to quality care. Capstones teach logical and analytical thinking to make evidence-based clinical judgments.

Strengthens Written and Oral Communication

Conveying research professionally is imperative for patient safety. Capstones provide opportunities to produce scholarly papers and deliver engaging presentations to hone these skills.

Provides a Competitive Edge

Outstanding projects attract positive faculty recommendations for graduate school and convey career dedication to employers.

Difference between a Nursing Capstone Project and a Nursing Thesis

Before selecting a topic, recognizing distinctions between nursing capstones versus theses lays strong foundations. Theses demand in-depth investigations into a focused research problem. Capstones incorporate broader literature reviews on a practice area to recommend an initiative.

While research-oriented master’s theses aim to generate new nursing knowledge, capstones demonstrate the ability to apply existing evidence to real clinical settings.

What is an example of an EBP question in nursing?

In the realm of nursing, an example of an Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) question might be:

“What’s the most effective way to prevent falls in older adults within a hospital setting?”

This question isn’t just a mere query; it’s a powerful beacon, guiding us on a journey that’s Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound (SMART).

It’s a question that resonates with clinical significance, for falls are a major concern, particularly among older adults in hospital settings.

To unravel this question, a nurse embarks on a quest through the corridors of knowledge:

The Quest for Evidence

The journey commences with a thorough literature search, a quest for the wisdom hidden within the pages of research. It’s like an archeological expedition, excavating treasures that could transform nursing practice.

Evaluating the Findings

With evidence in hand, the nurse becomes a detective, meticulously appraising the quality and relevance of each piece of the puzzle. This step separates the gems from the pebbles.

Weaving the Tapestry

Like an artisan weaving a masterpiece, the nurse synthesizes the evidence, connecting the dots to reveal a comprehensive narrative. It’s a process that unveils the implications for nursing practice.

The Transformation

The final act of this quest is the application of evidence in nursing practice. It’s where the nurse becomes a maestro, composing new fall prevention interventions or orchestrating changes to existing ones.

This EBP question isn’t just a curiosity; it’s a quest for excellence, a call to action. It’s a journey that can impact the lives of older adults in hospital settings, enhancing their safety and well-being.

So, when we pose such questions in nursing, we embark on a noble quest to elevate patient care and illuminate the path to excellence.

As we wrap up our exhilarating journey through the world of EBP nursing project ideas, one thing becomes abundantly clear—nursing isn’t just a profession; it’s a calling, a commitment to making a profound difference in the lives of patients and their families.

They adjust nurse-patient ratios, fine-tune communication, and promote resilience, all to create an environment where everyone thrives.

In the era of technology and telehealth, EBP projects invite us to explore the brave new world of healthcare.

Telehealth services, mobile apps, and advanced EHR systems are the instruments through which nursing professionals compose a symphony of healthcare that’s more accessible and personalized.

Readmission reduction projects are our allies in ensuring that patients’ journeys continue smoothly even after they leave the hospital. Enhanced discharge planning, follow-up calls, and transitional care programs extend the circle of care beyond the hospital walls.

Difference between a Nursing Capstone Project and a Nursing Thesis

As you get close to the final term and the residency program gets closer, you will most likely either handle a thesis or a capstone project. A typical confusing question nursing students ask is, what’s the difference between a capstone and a thesis in nursing? We have the answers right here for you.

Most nursing programs , both at the undergraduate and graduate levels, mandate that the students complete either a nursing thesis or a capstone project.  While a thesis project is meant to focus on a general issue and provide insights to the reader, a capstone thinly focuses on a specific issue, concern, or problem in the realm of nursing.

Also, unlike a thesis that presents a theory or solution, a capstone paper describes the issue using a fact-based approach.

A capstone project is most likely to be assigned from undergraduate to graduate level, whereas a nursing thesis is only assigned to graduate nursing students. Nursing capstone projects are also more focused compared to the theses. One of the reasons is because a capstone demonstrates the understanding of the topic through a detailed analytical approach. On the other hand, a thesis paper for nursing entails the generation of hypothesis or research questions, conducting research, analysis of data, explanation of the findings, and concluding as well as recommending the evidence-based practice.

Even with the differences, both nursing thesis and capstone projects form grounds for evidence-based practice in nursing.

What Is a DNP Capstone Project?

The DNP capstone project (most often referred to as a DNP final project) takes place near the end of your DNP program. It  is your opportunity to take your newly acquired competencies achieved through DNP coursework and clinical experiences and design a project that is focused on positively impacting healthcare outcomes, either through direct clinical nursing care or indirectly from the systems side of nursing. As a culminating project, the goal  is to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate mastery of  newly acquired skills and knowledge. A successful DNP capstone project reflects the scope of the student’s doctoral level work and focuses on a meaningful change to healthcare outcomes.

Note: The term “DNP capstone project” has given way to the term “DNP final project” in recent years due to the AACN’s 2015 call for nursing schools to use a term that distinguishes the DNP project from other graduate-level projects.

Sponsored School(s)

Your final DNP project is an investigation of an area of nursing practice, the healthcare delivery system, or a healthcare policy issue that aligns with the scope of your doctoral work. It’s your time to translate health research into practice, preparing you to make the transition to the role of active practitioner in the delivery of informed, quality healthcare.

Your final DNP project will be unique to you, although all DNP projects should:

  • Feature a systems or population/aggregate focus
  • Demonstrate how it can be implemented into your area of practice
  • Include a realistic plan for sustainability
  • Include an evaluation of the project’s results
  • Provide a foundation for future practice scholarship

How Do I Choose a Capstone Project?

Your final DNP project will align with your DNP’s focus and clinical experiences and be something meaningful to you. What your DNP looks like will ultimately depend on what’s important to you, although your DNP project coordinator, faculty advisor, or DNP program committee will need to give you the green light to proceed with your project idea.

What Are Some DNP Capstone Ideas?

DNP projects are most often focused on quality improvement initiatives, practice change programs, program evaluations, or the translation of evidence into practice.

For example, if your DNP capstone project is practice-focused, it may involve implementing or evaluating a new practice model, a program of care, or a quality improvement project. If it’s focused on health policy, it may involve analyzing, developing, or implementing policy or legislative change. Or if it’s focused on health systems, it may involve using new technology to enhance or evaluate care or analyzing financial models to improve cost-effectiveness in care models.

Examples include:

  • Pilot study
  • Change initiative
  • Consultation model
  • Policy initiative
  • Quality improvement initiative
  • Design and evaluation of a new model of care

What Will the DNP Capstone Involve?

Your DNP capstone will culminate in a final report that includes a scholarly paper that’s suitable for publication. This scholarly paper will include a description of the project, an evidence-based review of the literature, your findings, the evaluation of your findings, and outcomes, and suggestions for its dissemination to the larger nursing community. Dissemination examples may include presenting at a local, regional, sate, or national conference, publishing in a peer-reviewed journal, developing a webinar presentation, presenting to the general public, developing a digital poster, etc.

Once your DNP capstone is complete and your DNP mentor/project chair confirms that your scholarly paper is ready for committee review, you can move onto the final portion of the project, which is a final presentation and defense.

How Will My DNP Capstone Be Evaluated?

Your DNP capstone project will be evaluated via a review process that includes one or more of the following: peer review, academic review, and/or stakeholder review. In general, this review process includes a final oral presentation and project defense that you’ll complete in front of the DNP project committee.

Approval of the final defense of your DNP final project from the DNP project committee acts as documentation that you have passed. This is usually accomplished by vote among the DNP project committee members. If you don’t pass, you’ll have the opportunity to correct any deficiencies and present your project once again to the DNP project committee. Most programs only allow students two opportunities to pass the final DNP project.

Life is busy as a wife, mom of two rambunctious little girls, and an ICU nurse. Adding in being a full-time student has had its challenges, but UCCS has made the transition seamless. I was initially concerned about taking many of the courses online, as I wanted to know my professors and fellow students, but I can honestly say that that was an unnecessary worry. My cohort now feels like family, and my professors genuinely care about me as a grad student and my education as a future family nurse practitioner.

"The Expo is my favorite event of the year," Dean John Weidner said. "When I see what the students have accomplished, I'm in awe."

Hosted at the Duke Energy Convention Center in downtown Cincinnati, the event featured projects from all engineering disciplines that were segmented into four different categories: product/device, software, poster board, and student organization-sponsored projects. More than 100 industry professionals, faculty and alumni volunteered to judge this year's Expo.

Groups were judged and scored on their professionalism and presentation skills, as well as the quality of their concept, execution and demonstration based on their category. Participants said the opportunity to present their projects to judges and receive feedback is invaluable experience for entering the workforce upon graduation.

The Expo is vital to the success of CEAS.

Rob Cohen, CEO of DRT Holdings

"The Expo is vital to the success of CEAS," said Rob Cohen, CEO of DRT Holdings, LLC, this year's platinum level Expo sponsor. "It's a showcase for local industry to experience firsthand the creative energy and work that students pour into their projects and for DRT as a company, it was an excellent opportunity for us to interact with the students."

At UC, engineering students embark on a unique, challenging journey through their five years at CEAS. Alternating between semesters of classroom instruction and semesters of engineering field or research work through the cooperative education, or co-op, program. Students complete a capstone project as the finishing piece of their undergraduate degree.

Reintroduced in this larger format in 2022, the Expo is organized and managed by the college's student government, CEAS Tribunal. This year, Tribunal elected two Expo Chairs to manage the bulk of the event planning, Jada Teregeyo and Maggie Sprung. They shared that planning for Expo was a three-semester commitment for them.

Without the dedication of the students in Tribunal, the volunteer judges, and the event sponsors, Expo would not be possible. CEAS would like to extend its gratitude to DRT Holdings, LLC, Salas O'Brien, KZF Design, Belcan, and the CEAS Alumni Board for sponsoring this year's Expo.

12 category winners were selected by the volunteer judges. The CEAS academic departments also selected departmental winners. The winners for each of the four categories are listed below.

Three CEC students represent USC’s Goldwater Scholars honorees

2024 Goldwater Scholars

Since 1989, the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation has awarded more than 10,700 scholarships to students who intend to pursue research careers. Earlier this month, the foundation awarded 438 scholarships nationwide, and the University of South Carolina’s three recipients are all College of Engineering and Computing (CEC) students.

Biomedical engineering juniors Caroline Rucker and Jeremiah Tobin, and computer science and engineering junior Katelyn Wyandt, who are all students in the USC Honors College , were selected as Goldwater Scholars from an estimated pool of over 5,000 college sophomore and juniors. As a Goldwater scholar, each awardee will receive a $7,500 yearly scholarship and have access to a large network of leading researchers who can help provide mentorship and career opportunities.

“The fact that the CEC had three Goldwater Scholars in one year is a testament to our dedication to excellence in engineering education, research and mentorship. The success of our scholars reflects their considerable talent and our faculty's commitment to nurturing scientific innovators and future thought leaders,” says CEC Dean Hossein Haj-Hariri .

Caroline Rucker ‘25 Biomedical Engineering Hometown: Powhatan, Virgina

Rucker’s research experience started before she arrived in Columbia. During her senior year of high school, she worked in a laboratory at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) as part of an intensive research and mentorship program. Once at USC, she found a research mentor in Chemical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering Associate Professor Michael Gower .

“My research at VCU involved the use of lab-on-a-chip devices to examine the breast cancer tumor microenvironment,” Rucker says. “It was in the biomaterials realm, so when I came to USC and looked at the faculty research database, Dr. Gower was on my radar because he worked with cells, the immune response and biomaterials. “I eventually talked to a student who was working with him and the more I learned about Dr. Gower and his research, the more I was interested.”

Gower and Chastity Graham , national fellowships coordinator for the Honors College, both encouraged Rucker to apply to the Goldwater Scholars program. As Rucker learned about the prestige of the program, it was something she wanted to pursue.

“It’s an honor to be recognized alongside so many people who will be a part of the next generation of leaders in my field,” Rucker says. “Even just going through the application process allowed me to reflect on my interests and why I’m doing research.”

Caroline Rucker

Rucker has worked with Gower on bio-inspired polymer particles for the treatment of chronic inflammation, which is considered a cause for a variety of health conditions. They have fabricated the particles and functionalized them with a phospholipid, which is the main component of the cell membrane and acts as a signal to enter cells.

“We've engineered particles that take advantage of a biological process to get into cells more readily. Our ultimate goal is to encapsulate anti-inflammatory drugs in the particles, which will help achieve a more targeted drug delivery,” Rucker says.

Rucker’s project associated with the Goldwater Scholars program will focus on using a synthetic phospholipid instead of one derived from a porcine (pig) brain.

“Using a synthetic phospholipid in our particles helps improve the viability of clinical translation because it eliminates the risks associated with having an animal derived substance in drug products,” Rucker says. “My research will compare the anti-inflammatory effects of the synthetic molecule to an animal-derived one to validate its efficacy.”

According to Gower, in addition to her scholarship, he has also been impressed by Rucker’s  stewardship to the CEC community.

“For example, through volunteering at the Gamecock CommUnity Shop , Caroline has no doubt played a role in retaining students at our university and helping them thrive. I have enjoyed working with Caroline and look forward to her future accomplishments,” Gower says.

Rucker believes that her work and research as a Goldwater Scholar will have an impact in achieving her future goals of pursuing a Ph.D. in biomedical engineering and becoming a university professor and researcher in the immunoengineering field.

“Being named a Goldwater Scholar will certainly aid me in my path to attending graduate school and pursuing my chosen career,” Rucker says. “So far, it has helped me develop confidence in communicating my ideas and interests.”

Jeremiah Tobin ‘25 Biomedical Engineering Hometown: Greenville, South Carolina

Tobin first learned about the Goldwater Scholars program after fellow biomedical engineering student Shannon DePratter was one of four recipients from USC last year. But it was Mark Uline , chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering, who encouraged him to apply because he believed his research was interesting and that he would be a strong candidate.

“Being a Goldwater scholar is a validation that what I do matters and is interesting and makes me feel good about my work and research,” Tobin says. “It gives me more inspiration to go to grad school and continue pursuing my research, knowing that there are people who care about what I’m doing.”

According to Tobin, he chose to major in biomedical engineering because he always enjoyed math, chemistry and physics courses. But his inspiration to pursue research was a course taught by Uline that focused on cell molecular biology for biomedical engineers. It was also where Tobin first met Uline and how he eventually began working with him on research projects.

“We learned about all the different components of the cell and basic thermodynamics, and it’s still my favorite class to this day,” Tobin says. “We also did Michaelis-Menten kinetics, which is using math to predict how enzymes work, and the biggest inspiration for my current work.”

Tobin’s current research focuses on biophysical modeling, which could have various applications in immunology. Instead of biology research, which examines organisms and cells with different chemicals, biophysical modeling takes chemistry and physics principles, mathematics, and statistical mechanics and uses them to better understand its biology and how they work. The Goldwater Scholars funding will support Tobin’s research in modeling immunosensor proteins in the aorta.

Jeremiah Tobin

“I’m particularly looking at inflammasomes, which are basically signaling platforms that cause inflammation,” Tobin says. “We're doing modeling and working with researchers at the USC School of Medicine on some experimental work. It’s a new immunology, and I think there's more that can be done with immune responses.”

Tobin has worked with Uline for nearly two years, and he added that working with him has been his favorite part of attending USC.

“Jeremiah is one of the most talented young researchers that I have ever worked with, but what really makes him special is his attitude and inquisitive nature,” Uline says. “I am lucky to work with him, and he is going to continue to grow into a truly special engineering scientist.”

Tobin plans to earn a Ph.D. in biomedical engineering before working in research and development in the immunology field. He believes that being a Goldwater scholar will be helpful for choosing a graduate program based on his current research.

“I enjoy and am passionate about the work and research I’m doing as well as its application and importance,” Tobin says. “Hopefully with the Goldwater scholarship, it will allow my research to have an immediate impact at a grad school instead of building something from the start.”

Katelyn Wyandt ‘25 Computer Science and Engineering Hometown: Summerville, South Carolina

As a freshman, Wyandt was interested in computational neuroscience research. Even though she decided not to pursue this area, it allowed her to meet biochemistry and molecular biology major Emma Mason. They remained in touch and after Mason was named a Goldwater Scholar last year, she encouraged Wyandt to apply.

“It's a big honor to be a Goldwater Scholar. For me, it means that I have potential and people are willing to take a chance to give me the scholarship and believe that I can make a difference in research,” Wyandt says.

Wyandt’s research area is human-computer interactions, which focuses on the designing, implementing and evaluating the interactive interfaces used by humans and computers. While struggling to find a new research area, she knew she wanted research that combined her creative side with computer science. Then she found Integrated Information Technology Associate Professor Dezhi Wu and her research in human-computer interactions.

“I googled, 'How can I combine computer science with art or design’ and human-computer interactions was one of the results. After looking at some faculty research, I emailed Dr. Wu and told her I would love to join her lab to learn more,” Wyandt says.

Katelyn Wyandt

Wyandt’s research will examine how people interact with technology and improve those interactions, specifically in the accessibility realm for education. She previously worked on the designing and testing of a multimodal digital learning platform, which considers more than one learning style and mode.

“While doing the usability testing, I noticed that in the design we didn’t consider those with ADHD because they had a unique interaction with the platform,” Wyandt says. “That began my foray into how people with ADHD interacted with our platform and the larger question of how to design educational learning platforms and technologies that are more inclusive of different learning experiences.”

According to Wyandt, she was the first freshman to join Wu’s HI3 Tech Lab . While her initial responsibilities included data analysis and literature reviews, she has become more involved in research projects. As her technical skills have increased, she has been exposed to more research communities.

“Katelyn is an amazing undergraduate scholar in my lab. Her scholarly development has been remarkable with her curiosity, passion and dedication,” Wu says. “I am immensely proud of her research accomplishments, which include two published articles as my co-author and one ongoing research project that she serves as a leading author, making her stand out among undergraduate students on campus and nationally.”

Wyandt plans to pursue a Ph.D. in human-centered design and engineering and aims to use the Goldwater Scholars program to deepen her research experiences.

“There’s an entire community of Goldwater scholars, and I’ve already met another scholar from this year who reached out and wanted to connect because they also do human-computer interactions research,” Wyandt says. “Receiving the Goldwater scholarship gives me a great launchpad and more confidence to apply to grad schools.”
