Teaching is a noble profession and being a teacher is indeed a true blessing. Teachers have a great influence on the lives of students.

A teacher could mould a student for the best or for the worst. A child learns his basics from school and his teachers and hence teaching is a profession that does require lot of passion and hard work.

The influence of teachers remains for a lifetime and hence before one takes up the profession of teaching, one needs to understand clearly as to what are the duties and responsibilities of a good teacher.

If I were to become a teacher, the first step I would take to make teaching more interesting and fun filled, so that students would be attentive in class. I would give my students their space of imagination and thoughts, so that they learn to think and implement for the betterment in a situation or crisis. I would stand by them during their ups and down as it becomes a moral responsibility of a teacher to understand their students well. Most importantly never overestimate or underdetermine a student, as each student is unique in their own way and hence give them their space.

It is not gadgets and software that they should learn to communicate with, but the basic methods of talking and getting to understand and feel each other`s emotions. The role of a teacher is very essential in every individual’s life. They are the one who teaches us what is right and what is wrong.

They are the one who teaches us what is to be done and what not to be. They are the guiding people. They are self-less. They are very devoted towards us.

They know their responsibility and maintain it very well. They can never play with any- one. After parent’s they are the one who make our life. They are the one who works for our betterment.

They show us path towards success. They do not have any personal benefit of motive behind doing this. This is their true nature. They are there for us. They are here to teach us and to make us good human beings.  

The very first role of a teacher is to teach us. In the older times there used to be Gurukuls for the education of children. The gurus used to teach.

They used to give the guiding principles. They were not corrupt. Their sole purpose and intention was to teach their disciples.

The relationship of a teacher and student was very pure and pious. It was beyond the demand of any return. It was beyond the demand of any benefit. It was beyond the demand of any pleasure.

It was a relationship of sacrifice. It was a relation where both of them know their responsibility. They are not greedy. They are there to teach. They are here to give knowledge to people.   

As a teacher I would spread knowledge not only to the students but to all those who want to learn. Knowledge is not restricted. Knowledge is there so that it can be taken by any one.

It is for every individual. I would love to be a teacher. It is my personal interest to teach. I like to interact with people.

I like to have discussions with the people. If I were a teacher I would be able to do all these things. This would be very exciting for me. Although the work of a teacher is not as easy as it seems to be.

The work of a teacher is very challenging. It is not only the requirement of a student to study or learn. It is same in the case of a teacher as well. A teacher also has to learn on a daily basis.

The technology is progressing day by day. The world is developing at a faster rate. There are new inventions. There are new principles coming up.

In order to have a knowledge of all these things even the teacher has to do the research and study.  

If I were a teacher I would study. I would do researches on various topics. I would look for news I would look for relevant examples from day to day life in order to make my explanation more effective.

I would do all the possible efforts so that my students to cope -up with my explanations and teachings. If my teaching would not be comprehended by my students then it is no use. It will be a waste.

I would make variations in my teaching skill. I would make modulations. I would do experiments with my teaching style. For me the most important thing would be to teach each and every student as equal.

I would never differentiate between any of the student as a teacher. It is in nature that not every -body has the same capacity and intellect.

God has created every individual with separate talent. They all are blessed with some-thing or the other. I would always respect that as a teacher.  

The next thing that I would do if I were a teacher would be that I would not be biased. I would keep away all my personal attachments aside.

It happens that teachers get close to some students and start getting biased. If I were a teacher I would never do that. It would be a complete injustice to other students.

If I were a teacher I would ask my students again and again if they are comfortable with my teaching.

If I were a teacher I would ask my students if they find my teaching style interesting. I would ask them if they find me captivating. I would very happily accept all the opinions.

I would try to improve my teaching. I would also teach them separately if they would want that. It happens that there are students who do not understand.

There are students who hesitate to ask in front of so many students. I would teach them in person.   

I would develop a friendly relationship with my students. I would make them comfortable. I don’t want my students to be nervous or to hesitate before asking me any-thing. I want my students to be open to me.

I want them to bring their problems to me. Not only related to the academics I would allow them to consult me in any difficulty.

I would always give them advice and guide them. For me the position of a teacher is very important. They help us pave our path towards success. They put in so much of effort for us.   

If I were a teacher I would help my students in every situation and support them. If I were a teacher I would encourage my students and provide them with some extra and use-full information other than the academics.

I would make them participate in different competitions. By taking part in various events it would help them build up their confidence. I would maintain a friendly relationship with them.

I would try hard to make them better person. I would not let any-one to deviate. If I were a teacher I would punish them for their misbehavior and appreciate them for their good wok.

On top of the standard class routine, being a teacher during the pandemic has entailed the burden of handling students who opt for remote learning. They are faced with additional struggles, including connection issues, complaining parents, and being overworked in general- it’s as if they teach twice the number of classes as normal. This is exhausting and may prove detrimental to the American education system, according to the sources Singer cites.

If I Were a Teacher

All through our lives we meet people who are instrumental in shaping who and what we become. In all probability, no one influences us more than the teachers who guide us through our most impressionable years.

Teachers come in many different packages. While some are strict disciplinarians others are approachable and easy going. If I were a teacher, I would strive to find the perfect balance between the two. I would spend a lot of time with my students to find out aspects of their personality and behaviour. I would then help each one overcome his weaknesses and hone his strengths. I would introduce ‘humour class’ as a part of the curriculum: a platform for sharing anecdotes and jokes that will surely relieve the students of class and study related stress.

My classroom would definitely go beyond the four walls of the school to include the functioning of common everyday civic amenities like banks, post offices and railway stations and frequent trips to city libraries, museums and parks.

Most people believe that a teacher, like a sculptor, moulds and gives shape to his students’ minds. I believe that unlike the sculptor who moulds the clay into the shape he desires, a good teacher will help a student find the shape he wants to be and help him grow into it.

If I were a teacher, I would try to bring more novelty in my teaching methods. For example, I would occasionally change the seating arrangements in my classroom so that students would not get too comfortable and start taking things for granted. I would also frequently use different teaching aids (such as flashcards, puppets, etc.) in order to make the class more interesting and engaging. In this way, I would be able to keep the students’ attention focused on the lesson.

If I were a teacher, I would also focus on facilitating group learning. I would encourage students to work in small groups on projects or assignments. As a Teacher: Friendly behavior

If I were a teacher, I would try to be as friendly and approachable as possible. I would want my students to feel comfortable coming to me with any questions or concerns they may have. I would also make an effort to get to know each of my students on a personal level. In this way, I would be able to build relationships of trust with them.

After being a mother of two children, one in kindergarten and one in Grade 4, I have developed numerous opinions on what I would do if I were a teacher. On the one hand, I understand that teachers have to grapple with bureaucracy which limits the innovations they can apply to improve learning outcomes. On the other hand, teachers have a critical role to play in transforming the education system. They can include radical as well as incremental changes in how they teach if they can alter how they see education and its purpose. For me, education has the primary goals of developing each child’s unique abilities according to their talents and preferences and preparing them to be meaningful contributors to their society. With this vision of education, if I were a teacher, I will abolish tests, realize and nurture multiple intelligences, and teach the subject only after having a sound knowledge of my students’ diverse identities.

As a teacher, I will abolish tests because they are not accurate indicators of intelligence on specific knowledge, skills, or values, whichever is being “tested.” Tests are quick ways of knowing not how much a student has truly learned but how “good” they are at memorizing. Definitely, I am uninterested in testing memory skills. For instance, if I teach English in grade school, tests cannot provide a sufficient way of measuring reading comprehension skills. Even if I do include tests, I will not use them to determine the final grade but to assess how well they are doing. If I want to measure comprehension, I will ask my students to write reaction and argumentative papers which will deeply assess their understanding of the material. They can hardly react on and argue about the text if they fail to understand it. Another example is history. I will not test the knowledge of my students on facts. Instead, I can help them memorize them more naturally if they make an analysis or reaction paper about it. If they can develop strong emotions about the topics, I believe memorizing will come more easily.

Besides eradicating exams’ impact on grades, I will acknowledge and develop multiple intelligences through using diverse teaching approaches, materials, and activities. I know that I should not teach a fish to climb a tree and expect it to excel. Some students prefer visual learning while others prefer to study by doing, also called kinesthetic learners. I will respond to these different intelligences by devising approaches, materials, and activities that are appropriate to the latter. For example, if I am teaching the topic of history of pre-Spanish times, I will have different project options for my students, such as writing an individual research paper or group paper, drawing a reaction and writing a short paper to explain it, and creating a presentation for deeper analysis. In other words, I will avoid limiting my students in expressing and honing their natural intelligences.

Finally, if I were a teacher, I will teach only after I know who my students are because their identity affects their attitudes towards learning in general and learning the subject per se. The first two to three days in class will be devoted to knowing who they are, their demographics and specific hobbies and interests. I will also ask them either to write or provide a recording or video about how they see education, how they study, and why/when they are motivated to learn or not. Clearly, I desire to deeply know who they are so that I can connect my teaching to their identities and dreams in life because I believe this can make learning and studying topics more relevant and enjoyable to them.

If I were a teacher, I will change how and why I teach. I will help them achieve their highest abilities in my class through understanding and responding to different forms of learning and intelligence. Fundamentally, I will teach according to my students’ identities because I am not only their teacher but also the facilitator of their full becoming as independent and productive human beings.

If I Became a Teacher Essay Example

If one day I became a teacher, I will set up my classroom as an enjoyable place where my students can learn and feel safe, accepted, confident, and well-disciplined. I will strive to give them my best, I will treat them the way I want them to treat me.  I will respect them, care about them, encourage them and celebrate their success. To achieve this goal, I will rely on what I learned from theories and models of discipline. Like the medium control/interacting model and the low control/guiding model.

If I am an elementary school teacher, I would prefer to follow the medium control model, especially the guidelines of the cooperative discipline by Linda Alberts. I choose this discipline because it is a middle ground model, not too strict, not too lenient. With teacher’s and parent’s guidance, young students will gradually learn how self-control and self-discipline. My plan to implement this model would count on working in collaboration with my students and with their parents. I will practice Linda’s Albert 3 C’s: capability, connection, and contribution. I would make a big visual poster about these three words as a daily reminder for all of us. I would explain each word to them and how to practically include it in our activities. 

The capability word will remind me that my students are capable of learning. I will encourage them, cherish them, and feed their curiosity. We will celebrate every successful learning gain and achievement together. 

The connection word will prompt me to never forget to be kind, friendly, and caring about each other. When we are in class, we should treat each other like family.

The contribution word will emphasize that I should never forget to encourage them to work together as a team, to help each other, and to contribute to their favorite activities at class, school, home, or their community.

However, if I am a middle school or a high school teacher, I would carry out a different approach. I think the inner discipline model by Barbara Coloroso is very suitable for adolescents because this category of students tends to be more sensitive to criticism and usually favor more freedom and fewer restrictions. I will treat them with respect and compassion. I will believe that they are capable of learning how to control their behavior and how to self-regulate. I will help them recognize their problem behavior and will give them the freedom to find a way to correct it, I will never use harsh criticism or utter any shaming words. I would use reminders about the rules that we should follow in class. I would try to resolve any misbehavior using the tactics of the 3 R’s of Barbara Coloroso. Restitution, Resolution, and Reconciliation.

First, I would use restitution as a process to identify and properly correct the problem behavior with the student. Second, I will seek a resolution and try to find a way to prevent the same issue from happening again. And last, I will work on reconciliation by agreeing on a final solution to the problem behavior.

I have not yet formed a definite opinion regarding which profession suits me the best. At different times, I have toyed with the idea of being a doctor, an engineer, and a journalist. There are moments when, dipping into the future, I see myself as a teacher, an ideal teacher of course. Even now, I sometimes imagine what I would do if I were a teacher.

If I were a teacher, I would be aware of the nobility and vital importance of my profession. I might not be paid as well as I should be, but that would not justify my indifference to my work. This attitude is certainly wrong. A teacher’s duty is not merely to teach the prescribed books or syllabus but his higher duty and privilege is to mould the minds of the young, to form their character, and kindle love of knowledge in them. I would be aware of this great power of a teacher, the far – reaching influence he is capable of exercising on the rising generation. Though its results are slow and imperceptible, this power is greater than that wielded by administrators and ministers. I would, therefore, put my heart into my work and strive not only to teach the prescribed course but to develop in my pupils the qualities of discipline, integrity and idealism. With this end in view I would read widely and collect a good stock of -stories, jokes, anecdotes and quotations which, when aptly introduced in the course of one’s teaching, would make it enlivening and stimulating. Since example is better than precept, I would try to be a living embodiment of the thirst for knowledge and sterling qualities of character which I should like the young to cultivate.

Several teachers, do not pay individual attention to their students. Some teachers do not remember even the names of the boys and girls they teach. Naturally, many a young pupil feels that he is a non – entity in school. I would try to remember the names of all my pupils and recognize their individualizes. Thus they would develop self – respect and pride and endeavour to improve themselves. Some students are inevitably slow on the uptake, but I would treat them with sympathy and patience.

I would maintain discipline in my classes, but not with sternness and threats of punishment. Discipline inspired from within is better than discipline imposed from without. In short, the image of myself I should like to build up in the students’ mind would be that of a friend, philosopher, and guide. What’s it like to be a teacher in america today, public k-12 teachers are stressed about their jobs and few are optimistic about the future of education; many say poverty, absenteeism and mental health are major problems at their school.

Pew Research Center conducted this study to better understand the views and experiences of public K-12 school teachers. The analysis in this report is based on an online survey of 2,531 U.S. public K-12 teachers conducted from Oct. 17 to Nov. 14, 2023. The teachers surveyed are members of RAND’s American Teacher Panel, a nationally representative panel of public K-12 school teachers recruited through MDR Education. Survey data is weighted to state and national teacher characteristics to account for differences in sampling and response to ensure they are representative of the target population.

Here are the questions used for this report , along with responses, and the survey methodology .

Low-poverty , medium-poverty and high-poverty schools are based on the percentage of students eligible for free and reduced-price lunch, as reported by the National Center for Education Statistics (less than 40%, 40%-59% and 60% or more, respectively).

Secondary schools include both middle schools and high schools.

All references to party affiliation include those who lean toward that party. Republicans include those who identify as Republicans and those who say they lean toward the Republican Party. Democrats include those who identify as Democrats and those who say they lean toward the Democratic Party.

Public K-12 schools in the United States face a host of challenges these days – from teacher shortages to the lingering effects of COVID-19 learning loss to political battles over curriculum .

In the midst of all this, teachers express low levels of satisfaction with their jobs. In fact, they’re much less satisfied than U.S. workers overall.

Here’s how public K-12 teachers are feeling about their jobs:

  • 77% say their job is frequently stressful.
  • 68% say it’s overwhelming.
  • 70% say their school is understaffed.
  • 52% say they would not advise a young person starting out today to become a teacher.

When it comes to how their students are doing in school, teachers are relatively downbeat about both academic performance and behavior.

Here’s how public K-12 teachers rate academic performance and behavior at their school:

  • 48% say the academic performance of most students at their school is fair or poor. A third say it’s good, and only 17% describe it as excellent or very good.
  • 49% say the behavior of most students at their school is fair or poor; 35% say it’s good and 13% say it’s excellent or very good.

The COVID-19 pandemic likely compounded these issues. About eight-in-ten teachers (among those who have been teaching for at least a year) say the lasting impact of the pandemic on students’ behavior, academic performance and emotional well-being has been very or somewhat negative.

Assessments of student performance and behavior differ widely by school poverty level. 1 Teachers in high-poverty schools have a much more negative outlook. But feelings of stress and dissatisfaction among teachers are fairly universal, regardless of where they teach.

As they navigate these challenges, teachers don’t feel they’re getting the support or reinforcement they need from parents.

Majorities of teachers say parents are doing too little when it comes to holding their children accountable if they misbehave in school, helping them with their schoolwork and ensuring their attendance.

Teachers in high- and medium-poverty schools are more likely than those in low-poverty schools to say parents are doing too little in each of these areas.

These findings are based on a survey of 2,531 U.S. public K-12 teachers conducted Oct. 17-Nov. 14, 2023, using the RAND American Teacher Panel. 2 The survey looks at the following aspects of teachers’ experiences:

  • Teachers’ job satisfaction (Chapter 1)
  • How teachers manage their workload (Chapter 2)
  • Problems students are facing at public K-12 schools (Chapter 3)
  • Challenges in the classroom (Chapter 4)
  • Teachers’ views of parent involvement (Chapter 5)
  • Teachers’ views on the state of public K-12 education (Chapter 6)

Problems students are facing

We asked teachers about some of the challenges students at their school are facing. Three problems topped the list:

  • Poverty (53% say this is a major problem among students who attend their school)
  • Chronic absenteeism (49%)
  • Anxiety and depression (48%)

Chronic absenteeism (that is, students missing a substantial number of school days) is a particular challenge at high schools, with 61% of high school teachers saying this is a major problem where they teach. By comparison, 46% of middle school teachers and 43% of elementary school teachers say the same.

Anxiety and depression are viewed as a more serious problem at the secondary school level: 69% of high school teachers and 57% of middle school teachers say this is a major problem among their students, compared with 29% of elementary school teachers.

Fewer teachers (20%) view bullying as a major problem at their school, though the share is significantly higher among middle school teachers (34%).

A look inside the classroom

We also asked teachers how things are going in their classroom and specifically about some of the issues that may get in the way of teaching.

  • 47% of teachers say students showing little or no interest in learning is a major problem in their classroom. The share rises to 58% among high school teachers.
  • 33% say students being distracted by their cellphones is a major problem. This is particularly an issue for high school teachers, with 72% saying this is a major problem.
  • About one-in-five teachers say students getting up and walking around when they’re not supposed to and being disrespectful toward them (21% each) are major problems. Teachers in elementary and middle schools are more likely than those in high schools to see these as challenges.

A majority of teachers (68%) say they’ve experienced verbal abuse from a student – such as being yelled at or threatened. Some 21% say this happens at least a few times a month.

Physical violence is less common. Even so, 40% of teachers say a student has been violent toward them , with 9% saying this happens at least a few times a month.

About two-thirds of teachers (66%) say that the current discipline practices at their school are very or somewhat mild. Only 2% say the discipline practices at their school are very or somewhat harsh, while 31% say they are neither harsh nor mild. Most teachers (67%) say teachers themselves don’t have enough influence in determining discipline practices at their school.

Behavioral issues and mental health challenges

In addition to their teaching duties, a majority of teachers (58%) say they have to address behavioral issues in their classroom every day. About three-in-ten teachers (28%) say they have to help students with mental health challenges daily.

In each of these areas, elementary and middle school teachers are more likely than those at the high school level to say they do these things on a daily basis.

And teachers in high-poverty schools are more likely than those in medium- and low-poverty schools to say they deal with these issues each day.

Cellphone policies and enforcement

Most teachers (82%) say their school or district has policies regarding cellphone use in the classroom.

Of those, 56% say these policies are at least somewhat easy to enforce, 30% say they’re difficult to enforce, and 14% say they’re neither easy nor difficult to enforce.

Experiences with cellphone policies vary widely across school levels. High school teachers (60%) are much more likely than middle school (30%) and elementary school teachers (12%) to say the policies are difficult to enforce (among those who say their school or district has a cellphone policy).

How teachers are experiencing their jobs

Thinking about the various aspects of their jobs, teachers are most satisfied with their relationship with other teachers at their school (71% are extremely or very satisfied).

They’re least satisfied with how much they’re paid – only 15% are extremely or very satisfied with their pay, while 51% are not too or not at all satisfied.

Among teachers who don’t plan to retire or stop working this year, 29% say it’s at least somewhat likely they will look for a new job in the 2023-24 school year. Within that group, 40% say they would look for a job outside of education, 29% say they’d seek a non-teaching job in education, and only 18% say they’d look for a teaching job at another public K-12 school.

Do teachers find their work fulfilling and enjoyable?

Overall, 56% of teachers say they find their job to be fulfilling extremely often or often; 53% say their job is enjoyable. These are significantly lower than the shares who say their job is frequently stressful (77%) or overwhelming (68%).

Positive experiences are more common among newer teachers. Two-thirds of those who’ve been teaching less than six years say their work is fulfilling extremely often or often, and 62% of this group says their work is frequently enjoyable.

Teachers with longer tenures are somewhat less likely to feel this way. For example, 48% of those who’ve been teaching for six to 10 years say their work is frequently enjoyable.

Balancing the workload

Most teachers (84%) say there’s not enough time during their regular work hours to do tasks like grading, lesson planning, paperwork and answering work emails.

Among those who feel this way, 81% say simply having too much work is a major reason.

Many also point to having to spend time helping students outside the classroom, performing non-teaching duties like lunch duty, and covering other teachers’ classrooms as at least minor reasons they don’t have enough time to get all their work done.

A majority of teachers (54%) say it’s very or somewhat difficult for them to balance work and their personal life. About one-in-four (26%) say it’s very or somewhat easy for them to balance these things, and 20% say it’s neither easy nor difficult.

Among teachers, women are more likely than men to say work-life balance is difficult for them (57% vs. 43%). Women teachers are also more likely to say they often find their job stressful or overwhelming.

How teachers view the education system

A large majority of teachers (82%) say the overall state of public K-12 education has gotten worse in the past five years.

And very few are optimistic about the next five years: Only 20% of teachers say public K-12 education will be a lot or somewhat better five years from now. A narrow majority (53%) say it will be worse.

Among teachers who think things have gotten worse in recent years, majorities say the current political climate (60%) and the lasting effects of the COVID-19 pandemic (57%) are major reasons. A sizable share (46%) also point to changes in the availability of funding and resources.

Which political party do teachers trust more to deal with educational challenges?

On balance, more teachers say they trust the Democratic Party than say they trust the Republican Party to do a better job handling key issues facing the K-12 education system. But three-in-ten or more across the following issues say they don’t trust either party:

  • Shaping school curriculum (42% say they trust neither party)
  • Ensuring teachers have adequate pay and benefits (35%)
  • Making schools safer (35%)
  • Ensuring adequate funding for schools (33%)
  • Ensuring all students have equal access to high-quality K-12 education (31%)

A majority of public K-12 teachers (58%) identify or lean toward the Democratic Party. This is higher than the share among the general public (47%).
