JEANETTE STEPHENS-EL a/k/a "Raining Deer" is an author, editor, freelance writer, and publicist.

She’s a 2019 inductee to the NJ Cumberland County Black Hall of Fame. A multi- title author and recipient of the Barack Obama Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award. Author of several books:  On Eagles Wings: Prayers for the President; Rites of Passage for Breast Cancer Victors, 10 Tips to Avoid Breast Cancer (Unless it’s in the Genes); and T-Time: A Rites of Passage Manual for the Adolescent Female. Jeanette has an upcoming history book, Seeds of Awakening: The Creation of Oyotunji African Kingdom, which she edited and for which she designed a traveling exhibit titled Royal Robes. Following that will be a children’s book titled When Peacocks Fly, inspired by the Belafonte-Tacolcy Center in Miami's Liberty City.

“The funds will go towards an initial printing of books for the official presentation and/or East Coast book signing of Seeds of Awakening: The Creation of Oyotunji African Kingdom - 1970 – 1995, “ said Jeanette. “It’s a book about the founding of the first, and possibly the only -- authentic African village in the United States by a group of African Americans dedicated to restoring their cultural identity around the time of the American civil rights era. Established in the shadow of antebellum plantations in the South Carolina low country, Oyotunji became a center for students of 20th century Black America who sought and found a cultural kinship as it influenced self-awareness of Black Americans through the umbilical cord of ancestral history, planting a sense of pride in the minds of those who saw in their mirrored reflection a chief, a priest, a king or a queen. Genre is History/Ethnic Studies/African American Studies.”

Hailing from New Jersey, Jeanette initially lived in Miami, Florida for 24 years, returned to the North to care for her mother and then headed back to the Sunshine State where she still resides. Her natural affinity for writing led her to pen headline stories for several newspapers before she took the helm as editor-in-chief of Southern Dawn Magazine. Prior and during that time, she co-founded the Imani Um Nommo Writers Workshop which led to Jeanette serving as founding Executive Director of    the African American Caribbean Cultural Arts Commission. Funded by the Dade County Cultural Affairs Council, it gave birth to the Annual Pan African Bookfest & Cultural Conference for which Jeanette was an eleven-year project coordinator. She also served as publicist for Philip Michael Thomas during and after MIAMI VICE. Together they produced Kickin' High - A musical; Space Puppets, a children’s play; and a live theatrical reading of Nameejie – a play at the Billie Holiday Theater in New York in 2017. Jeanette has delivered keynote addresses at major events, on radio, television and college campuses and addressed audiences at book fairs from Harlem to Atlanta and Miami.

GIANCARLO DIAGO CEVALLOS is the Vice President of the South Florida Writer's Association.

He is currently attending Florida National University and expects to graduate in 2025 with a degree in Journalism. He considers himself an amateur at heart. Proud to wear the title, whether as a student, musician or in literature. The true meaning of the term "amateur" is about motivation, not quality. An amateur isn't in it for fame or fortune. An amateur pursues his art for the love of the art itself.

He loves animals, the ocean and sweets. He enjoys reading and writing books, too. His first book, Envoys, was published  in 2023. He is working on his second book, Tales of the Little Flame. Genre is Fantasy.

In Giancarlo's book, Taran is the Chief of his tribe, the Skulks. All his life, he's wanted to venture north across the sea to visit the closed-off island at the top of the world. Even though his tribe has been decimated by foreign disease, he can't resist the opportunity to visit the mythical island.

Lunate is the Crusader of his nation, Astria. It doesn't matter to him that Astria has become the joke and punching bag of its neighbors. On their travels, they are desperate to find anything that could give Astria an advantage, no matter what.

Both travelers hope to change the world, albeit in different, sometimes conflicting ways.

“I plan to use the grant money to hire a publicist in addition to other marketing activities to boost sales of my books,“ declared Giancarlo.

Three MFA graduates

We are a community of writers who support, inspire, and challenge each other to explore the experimental, discover the depths of our craft, and emerge with a fresh, confident voice.

Located in a thriving metropolis of polyglot communities, the University of Miami’s Creative Writing Program features a broad multilingual focus and offers writers a singular opportunity to hone their craft in a vibrant, multicultural city unlike any other. Enrollments in our courses are kept deliberately small to maximize student-teacher interaction, and faculty at UM are supportive of the linguistic and cultural differences that writers bring to their art.
